News that a $15-million recycling facility is coming to Queensborough caught New West officials by surprise Wednesday. Green by Nature EPR announced it will manage the sorting facility on behalf of Multi-Material BC (MMBC). MMBC is a non-profit industry organization taking over packaging and paper recycling on May 19. The new facility will be in the former RockTenn and Smurfit-MBI corrugated box plant at the foot of Gifford Street. The 179,000 sq. ft. facility will employ up to 70 people during construction and after it opens sorting recyclable plastics. The building’s conversion is to be completed by early 2015. A press release said Green by Nature will handle about 185,000 tonnes of packaging and printed paper material. It’s estimated about 20 per cent of all recyclables collected by MMBC will be sorted at the facility. Please see NEW FACILITY, A10

Life will be a beach at Westminster Pier Park soon. The city plans to install an urban beach on the Timber Wharf, located at the park’s east end. The area has been virtually a blank asphalt canvas since the park opened in 2012, although two sand volleyball courts were installed last year. Council approved plans that include a public pathway mimicking the Fraser River’s route, an outdoor group fitness area, hammocks, an art display and an off-leash dog area. Coun. Jonathan Coté said New West doesn’t have a beachfront, so why not create one. He noted Paris turns its riverbanks into an urban beach in summer with sand, umbrellas and shade protection. But detailed landscape plans are to be developed before construction goes ahead. The uses are to be temporary until financing can be found to strengthen the wharf’s structure. The plan is to have the ‘beach’ installed in time for this summer, and to have it stay year-round.
Another award for Pier Park The accolades continue to pile up for Westminster Pier Park. Three national organizations have named it winner of its 2014 National Urban Design Award for civic design projects. The $25-million project opened in 2012 along New Westminster’s riverfront. It was chosen by a jury made up of members from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Planners, and the Canadian Society of Landscape Artists. The jury said Westminster Pier Park “responds beautifully to the desire of giving new life to a derelict brownfield site.” Amongst several awards it has garnered, the project received an International Downtown Association award in New York last year.
Heritage Home Tour returns The Massey Theatre and Queen’s Avenue United Church will be featured in this year’s New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society heritage tour. The Massey turns 65 this year and is slated for demolition in 2015 as part of a redeveloped New Westminster secondary. The church is 55 years old and the society describes it as a “fine example of midcentury modern architecture.” Homes on the tour, which will be held May 25, include an 1891 Victorian house on a hidden lane in lower Queen’s Park and a 1939 home built by a B.C. premier. Tickets are $40 and will be available starting May 3 online at www.newwestheritage.org or at Royal City Colours, Cadeaux Gifts, Irving House and GardenWorks–Mandeville in Burnaby.

ZONING AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 7678, 2014 PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The City of New Westminster’s Zoning Bylaw, the Light Industrial Districts (M–1) zoning schedule contains a number of uses that are out of step with current uses that are appropriate in a light industrial area and some aspects of the zone make it difficult for staff to identify appropriate light industrial uses suitable for the zone. Staff propose to clarify section 710.66 in order to provide a more inclusive definition of the permitted uses in the zone and allow more efficient processing of business licence applications under the Light Industrial Districts (M-1) zone. WHAT IS ZONING AMENDMENT BYLAW NO. 7678, 2014 ABOUT? The Light Industrial Districts (M–1) zoning schedule, Section 710.66 currently in the Zoning Bylaw allows the following uses: 710.66 The assembly and finishing of business and office equipment, electronic instruments, household appliances, radios and televisions, and small electrical equipment including lighting fixtures, record players, wiring equipment, x-ray apparatus and similar equipment; The proposed amendment would change the definition of the permitted uses in the zone and would allow staff to process business licence applications appropriate to the Light Industrial (M-1) zoned industrial area. The revised definition would provide clearer information to potential light industrial land users which should result in a more intensive use of the light industrial lands. The proposed new section would read: 710.66 The assembly, fabrication and finishing of materials and products within an enclosed building; HOW DO I GET MORE INFORMATION? PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A proposal has been submitted to develop a four and five-storey multiple unit residential building with 50 apartment units and 5 townhouse units. WHAT IS REZONING REZ00082 ABOUT? Rezoning of the subject properties from Single Detached Residential Dwelling Districts (RS-2) to Comprehensive Development District (Cariboo Street) (CD-23) is required to allow the project to proceed. The 55 units proposed represent a density of 91.66 units per acre and Floor Space Ratio of 1.95. HOW DO I GET MORE INFORMATION? OPINION NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:
PUBLISHED & PRINTED BY BLACK PRESS LTD. at 7438 Fraser Park Drive, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9
PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Trish Jewison, Eye in the Sky Traffic Reporter for Global BC and AM730, took this amazing shot over Burnaby recently.
Critical thinking If there is an emerging theme to the 2010s, it is that many basic assumptions—no matter how cherished or long-held—are no longer enough to support our decision-making. No matter where we stand on the political spectrum, no matter how pro-environment or proindustry we are, no matter how trusting of government we feel or devoted to the rights of the individual, we are challenged to sift and examine facts, to consider the sources of our information, and reject propaganda and spin, no matter whether from ‘pro-’ or ‘anti-’ forces. We are faced by issues of such magnitude, whether globally (the effect of carbon emissions on the atmosphere, the spread of radioactive contamination from Fukushima, for example)—or locally (the Northern Gateway pipeline or expansion of the Fraser Surrey Docks coal port), that we can’t afford to trust the old simplistic, assumption-based arguments anymore. The downside of the information explosion is information overload—and this has not been ignored by those, whatever their political stripe, who have motives to coax us in one way or another. Pseudo-facts can be cobbled from elements of the truth and tailored to fit pre-existing assumptions. Our responsibility, no matter how we wish to shirk it, is to stay informed and examine, critically, evidence from all sides of the issues. Faced with information overload, the human animal has two basic responses. One is to shut off critical thinking and go with the opinions of those we’re told to trust. The other is to dig in our heels and resist any attempt to drag us into the future—no matter how much in our best interests it may be. Isn’t it time we all went to market? Two grocers visit New West’s mayor to discuss a problem: Mayor: Fat City? Grocer 1: We’re just saying think about it. M: You want us to adopt that as a motto? I agree Royal City might be a bit dated. But your suggestion sounds pretty offensive. Grocer 2: Fat’s a good word these days among young people. Means cool. G1: Yeah, like “sick.” M: Sick? Really guys, I don’t know— G1: Fact is, Mr. Mayor, everyone needs to eat more. And this could, well, turn a negative to a positive, ya know? Encourage folks to… (slaps his belly)... eat up! M: (Shakes his head) It’s not really the city’s problem though. You guys got yourselves into this. I mean, we’ve gone from three major grocery stores to… (counts off on his fingers) six—eight if you count the two Walmarts. G1: We didn’t have a choice! We had to get into the market,

sir. People want to shop close to home, so we’re bringing the food to the people. G2: Hey! That’s a good slogan—bringing the food— G1: (elbowing him in the ribs) Stay focused, Charlie. M: (sighs) G1: What we’re saying is, we’re here. And somebody’s got to eat all this food. G2: And if you don’t mind us saying, sir. It’s kind of what you wanted. Local business, local shopping and all that. M: (sighs again, this time exasperated) Yes. Of course I did. I want business coming here, of course. I want people shopping close to home. I want local jobs. But eight grocery stores? Four Save Ons? With Walmart at

Royal City Centre, that’s three grocers a block apart. We’re a growing city, but not that fast. G1: My grandpa grew up here. He told me New West once had dozens of grocery stores. There was a Safeway on 12th Street, Columbia Street had three or four. Heck, even Sapperton had a Shop Easy and a couple others. M: I know. Archie Miller was in here the other day and told me all about it. But he also said those were small stores. I know your urban shops are smaller now, but nothing like the old days. G1: Fine. (crosses his arms) But here we are. For now, everyone has to eat more. M: (shakes head) It doesn’t make sense. How can we eat more? We’re becoming a healthier city. That’s what I want! No smoking in parks! Walk to work! (bangs his fist on his desk, warming to his topic) Ride your bike! Look at all our SkyTrain stations! G2: Everyone can still do all that. G1: Yeah, if anything all that

biking and walking generates an appetite, ya know? Meantime (nods to the other grocer who pulls up something on his iPad and passes it to the mayor) check out those stats. There’s another demographic we can tap into. The folks who wear their gluttony with pride. You know, the ones who give the finger to healthy living. The ones who order the off-menu burgers like the Suicide Burger at Burger King or the Monster Mac at McDonald’s. Just to gross out their friends or prove a point. M: Hmmm… I do like a good burger... (The mayor drifts off in reverie, staring off into space a few moments. Then, returning, he slams his fist on his desk) No! I won’t have New West— my city—called Fat City. It’s wrong. And besides, my assistant told me earlier that a local tattoo parlour already has copyright on the name. G1: But Mr. Mayor— M: (Holds up a hand) No buts. G1: (Shrugs) OK. How about “Overweighty City?”

Why do we gather paper, then ship it abroad? Ever wonder what happens to the paper we diligently sort and put into our blue boxes to be recycled? Did you think it was remanufactured into paper here in Canada? Think again. According to the report prepared by Glenda Gies & Associates in March 2012 for Multi Material BC, the current system in Metro Vancouver for recycling residential paper and packaging collects an estimated 109,257 tonnes from all households and depots. And most of it is shipped out of the country to have value added elsewhere. Although the prices fluctuate according to global demand for old newsprint and cardboard, recycled newspapers are typically sold for $100 to $130 per tonne and can be reprocessed as recycled content newsprint, paperboard, insulation or roofing paper. “Material recovery facilities” process in-house for direct shipment primarily to end users in the U.S. for reprocessing while the rest is shipped overseas. Corrugated cardboard is sold for between $110 to $160 per tonne and, again, is shipped to the U.S. and overseas to be remanufactured into new card and containerboard, tissue and paperboard. Local processors were asked to identify markets for residential packaging
and printed papers materials sold in 2010. A B.C. market for old corrugated cardboard was available at the time, but it has since ceased operations. Mixed waste paper, which includes all types of papers, including some newsprint and corrugated cardboard, fetches between $60 to $120 per tonne depending on quality. But none of the processors surveyed reported sorting separate streams for materials that reduce the overall quality. This means they would most likely get the lowest selling prices in the market. Virtually all this recycled material is exported overseas where it is reprocessed and sold. And what happens to the truly badly commingled paper that can’t be packaged for export? I would assume it will end up in Burnaby’s incinerator or the proposed new plant
which would burn about 370,000 tonnes more per year, in addition to Burnaby’s annual volume of 280,000 tonnes. In reality, British Columbians don’t really recycle paper. We sort and export our paper garbage and recycling jobs while further polluting the environment burning energy to transport the waste offshore. If people were actually presented with this information, they might consider voting for policies that generate green jobs locally. Certainly, with appropriate incentives governments could foster a local reprocessing industry. We certainly have the raw resources to supply the industry. Rick McGowan Burnaby

REZONING # 00097 / BYLAW NO. 7676, 2014 (57 Sixth Street, 515 – 529 Carnarvon Street)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A proposal has been submitted to allow a temporary use consisting of the sale of new and used furniture at 131 Eleventh Street. The site is zoned Light Industrial Districts (M – 1).
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An application to rezone the site to permit the development of a 26 storey mixed use commercial / multi-unit rental residential project with 282 rental residential units and 5,500 sq. ft. of commercial space. WHAT IS BYLAW NO. 7676, 2014 ABOUT? A rezoning is required to Comprehensive Development District (CD-56) in order to permit the development of a 26 storey mixed use commercial / multi-unit rental residential project on this site. Rezoning is required as the development exceeds the density and height permitted under the current C-4 District zoning. HOW DO I GET MORE INFORMATION? The bylaw and all pertinent material are available for viewing online at www.newwestcity.ca/publicnotices, and also in the Planning Department at City Hall 10 business days prior to the closure of the Public Hearing, April 9, 2014 to April 28, 2014, Monday through Friday (except statutory holidays) between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. HOW CAN I BE HEARD? The public is welcome to attend the Public Hearing on April 28, 2014, or send a written submission addressed to Mayor and Council prior to the closing of the hearing.
WHAT IS TEMPORARY USE PERMIT 00010 ABOUT? The applicant proposes to allow the retail sales of new and used furniture as a permitted use within the existing building. The proposed area for the store would be 3,900 square feet (360.1 square metres). The Local Government Act authorizes municipalities to issue Temporary Use Permits, which allow uses that would not normally be permitted by the zoning of the property to operate on a temporary basis. The permits are issued for a maximum of three years and, after that time, may be extended by application for an additional three years. Council may attach conditions to the issuance of the permit to ensure that the impacts of the temporary use on existing businesses and properties are mitigated. HOW DO I GET MORE INFORMATION? A copy of the proposed Temporary Use Permit, supporting staff reports and relevant background documentation may be inspected at the Development Services Department (Planning), City Hall, 511 Royal Avenue, New Westminster, British Columbia, 10 business days prior to the Opportunity to be Heard, from April 9, 2014 to April 28, 2014, Monday through Friday (except statutory holidays) between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. “The Easter meal is never just about the food,” said UGM chaplain Matt Hislop. “The pain of poverty is especially deep on holidays, so we want to make sure we are providing a safe place for those in our community who are struggling and may have a tough time asking for help. For many people that we see, all it takes is a meal to start to restore feelings of hope and safety.”

You don’t have to start on the road Many of the top road racers in the world didn’t start on the pavement. They started in the dirt. Why? Because it teaches you how to control a bike in less than ideal traction environments. Also, if you fall, it doesn’t hurt as much! You can certainly get your feet wet when it comes to learning clutch and brake control on a “softer” surface, too. Furthermore, you don’t need a learner’s permit if you are riding off road. When and if you want to transition to the street riding, you’ll need it for that. Check out Popkum Motor Park’s Lessons/Training (www.popkummotorpark.com) program for all ages, as well as the BC Off Road Motorcycle Association’s website (www.bcorma.ca) for upcoming MSF Dirt Bike Schools. Another perk to starting to build your bike confidence on the dirt, training programs aren’t as expensive. So, this is me, the little white angel on your shoulder whispering, “Go on, get on two wheels!” But remember, safety is paramount. Take the test, go to school and thank me later. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel competes on performance—at a price The introduction of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee showcased the direction of the new Fiat-Chrysler partnership. It went on to win more awards that any other SUV; in fact, I chose it as one of my favourite vehicles that year. Sales have been strong for not only Jeep but the entire Chrysler group. Freshness has been into each new vehicle and this latest 2014 EcoDiesel version is another example. For this model year, the Grand Cherokee gets a refreshed front and rear, plus interior tweaks and a thrifty diesel under the hood.
‘‘
The already capable and luxurious gasoline versions are less expensive and come with all the regular Grand Cherokee goodness.
Verdict
’’
Looks The most noticeable updates for 2014 include a thinner front grille, narrower front headlights with LED accents. This really makes the latest model pop; especially when you compare it to the last model. The EcoDiesel option is only available in two trim levels, and this an expensive vehicle. The Overland is the cheapest diesel and it starts at roughly $58,000, $3000 more than a V6 model but the same price as the V8. The top of range Summit diesel starts at $62,000. In comparison, the base VW
EcoDiesel is the same as the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 at 7200 lbs, but this truck gets substantially better fuel economy. For those that drive a lot without a trailer, the improvement in fuel economy is something to factor in. If you don’t drive a lot each year, the diesel option might not be worth the added cost.
The Grand Cherokee is a nice truck, but a tough sell at the price point.
Zack Spencer
Touareg diesel starts at $55,000 but most of the other German mid-sized SUVs with a diesel, like the ML from Mercedes or the X5 from BMW also start in the low $60,000 range.
Inside One of the biggest changes at Chrysler has been the attention to detail now placed on interior design and refinement. The latest U-connect computer interface is one of the best in the business;
many high-end makers could learn a thing or two from Chrysler. The large 8.4-inch screen is one of the biggest on the market and it is very quick to the touch, going from one function to the next is logical and responsive. Pairing a smartphone takes under 30 seconds and the best feature is the map screen, which enables the embedding of a picture in the same way as picture-in-picture TV does. The dash is covered in stitched leather and the cabin
overall is simple and elegant. All EcoDiesel models come with leather seats and the back seats can even be heated.
Drive The biggest change for 2014 is the introduction of an all-new 3.0-litre direct inject turbocharged V6 diesel engine along with an 8-speed automatic. With 420 lb.-ft. of torque, this engine just rockets away from a light and cruises effortlessly on the highway. There is a big premium
to get this engine over a V6, or lower trim level V8 gasoline versions, but there are some compelling reasons to choose it. Fuel economy is number one. This heavy truck is rated at 9.8 L/100km in the city and only 7.0L on the highway. With aggressive driving and mostly city, I averaged 12L. I did notice on highway runs that the fuel economy improved radically and quickly. The towing capacity of the
Chrysler considers the Jeep Grand Cherokee a premium offering but I would not put this on a par with the Mercedes ML, BMW X5, Audi Q5 or a very nicely equipped VW Touareg. It is a very nice truck with as much diesel power and efficiency as the competition but the German brands have been at the whole diesel thing a lot longer and are a known entity in the market. The Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel would be a very easy choice if it were about $50,000, not $58,000. If you drive a lot or tow, the diesel might be worth it, but as it stands now the already capable and luxurious gasoline versions are less expensive and come with all the regular Grand Cherokee goodness.

I found myself constantly pushing the gas pedal to the floor just to keep up with traffic. Perhaps it is the CVT transmission but I would like to see a V6 option for this vehicle. Interestingly, the windshield wipers are noteworthy but not for a good reason. It was raining one day during my test drive and as I stopped at a light I felt the car sway back and forth with the wipers, I quickly dismissed it for a big truck driving by but it was at every stop. I turned them on fully and the car rocked back and forth with every swipe. I have heard about soft suspension but really? If it is a small crossover vehicle you are looking for and like the feeling of sitting up higher than a car, try this one. Just don’t pack five full-size adults in there and try to tackle the steep terrain of the Coquihalla highway.

Confessions of a Curber I guess you could say I was addicted. Only my drug of choice wasn’t coke or meth. No - it was the thrill of getting away with it all. And the easy cash, of course. Throwing the camper into that last deal was a great marketing idea. And, like last time, I decided to branch out again. There’s so much more than just cars! This time I decided to go with a motorcycle. I purchased it off the internet – I guess you could call it a curber-to-curber transaction. Oh, of course I knew every trick in the book by now. The seller gave me my old story and said that he was the real owner. Did I care? Not a chance. It was a nice Harley. And, it was a steal. I knew I could flip it for more. Why? Because I was a better marketer. But I needed to do it fast. And, I had to make sure I had a buyer that was naive enough not to do a lien check through carproof.com, or the province (bcregistryservices. gov.bc.ca). As usual, I put up a generic, one-line Craigslist ad. With a price like mine, I had a buyer within an hour. I made sure the Harley looked its best. I polished it until it sparkled and filled it with gas. Hey, what’s a few bucks? Then I ran into a small problem. I found out that my seller was the real owner. Wow. But he sold me a vehicle that was about to be repossessed.
Fortunately, he was in such a hurry that he didn’t make me do the transfer – so it was still in his name. No big deal. Bridging* was my friend. I just used his name and hoped my buyer would never ask me for ID. And I was right. The buyer smelled a bargain and took the bait like fish. He thought I was the fool! No lien check, no ID check. Just cash. I was home free, again. And the best part? When the bailiff came for the motorcycle, he didn’t even know my name.
*Bridging – A trick that curbers use to keep their identity secret. Curbers will pay more for a vehicle from an unscrupulous wholesaler or broker if they are not required to immediately put the vehicle in their name. This keeps their name out of the vehicle registry and makes them impossible to locate when deals go bad. Breaking the law is never a concern for them.

BCTF prepares for strike action Tom Fletcher Black Press
VICTORIA – After rejecting an offer from the school district bargaining agency for a long-term contract, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation went to the Labour Relations Board this week to establish essential service levels for strike action. BCTF members voted 89 per cent in March to endorse a three-stage strike plan that can begin with 72 hours notice. Phase one includes restricting communication with school managers, arriving no more than an Black Press hour before and leaving an Education Minister Peter Fassbender has been instructed by Premier Christy hour after school hours, Clark to seek a long-term agreement with teachers to stop the cycle of labour and refusing supervision of disruptions in public schools. students outside class time. Cameron’s initial offer is for a 10-year agreement with pay increases totalling 6.5% over the first six years and additional wage increases to be negotiated for the final four years. With compounding and current estimates of inflation, BCPSEA calculates that could amount to 13.5 per cent over three years. Conducting an experiment at PortLiving’s Midtown By Kerry Vital
Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood is rapidly becoming the hottest place to live, and developer PortLiving is capitalizing on that popularity with Midtown, a mixed-used low-rise development that will also offer commercial space on the street level. For the next three months, PortLiving is hosting the Midtown Experiment, where businesses can open a pop-up
shop for a week to gauge how popular they will be to local residents. “The Midtown Experiment is an incredibly positive way to bring life and vibrancy to this emerging area, and to experiment to better know the types of businesses that the community will welcome and frequent,” says Midtown Director of Living Robert Vrooman. “We know there will be a lot of demand from retail partners to occupy the space, but we feel it is just as important to listen to the needs of the community.”
NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT
Midtown will be situated on Broadway between St. George Street and Carolina Street. The four-storey building will hold one- and two-bedroom condominium homes as well as two three-bedroom concrete townhomes. Among the beautiful features at Midtown will be private covered patios, oversized windows, engineered hardwood floors and elegant quartz countertops complemented by a glass tile backsplash in the kitchen. The bathrooms feature in-floor radiant electric heating and glass accent tiles in the bathtub and shower surrounds. Curb appeal is never in short supply at Midtown, with its brick-clad exterior and communal elevated courtyard, perfect for visiting with your neighbours. For more information about the residences at Midtown, visit www.livingmidtown.com. Information about the Midtown Experiment can be found at www.chinatownexperiment.com/midtownexp.

Among the gorgeous features at Lakewood’s The Heights are gourmet kitchens and oversized windows that let the natural light pour in. The Heights is just minutes from Morgan Crossing and several other amenities, making it the perfect place for families and couples alike.
Taste and style at Lakewood’s The Heights By Kerry Vital
Life is extraordinary at The Heights, Lakewood’s townhome development in Surrey’s Grandview Heights that offers not only amazing homes but also a location that’s second-to-none. “The location is phenomenal,” says sales manager Ann Sonnenberg. “You’re a 10-minute walk from the Shops at Morgan Crossing, and there’s a brand-new elementary school two blocks from here.” The Grandview Heights neighbourhood also has leisure opportunities, plenty of restaurants and easy access to transit and major highways, making commuting easy. The Heights is located in a quiet section of the neighbourhood, making it perfect for families and couples alike. The 39 townhomes, ranging from 1,364 to 2,095 square feet, are available in a range of two- and three-bedroom floorplans. The exterior has plenty of curb appeal, with meticulously landscaped grounds and front doors with heritage-style raised panels and
glass. Some plans include a ground floor concrete patio and a double garage. Inside, nine-foot ceilings and oversized windows combine for a spacious feeling, while sleek laminate flooring on the main level is complemented by decorative crown moulding and designer lighting fixtures. Homeowners are able to choose between two colour schemes (Vanilla Bean and Chocolate Expresso), making it easier to put your own stamp on your space. The kitchen is fit for a gourmet with stainless-steel appliances, elegant quartz countertops and a ceramic tile backsplash. Pot lights in the kitchen and nook are a convenient touch that demonstrates Lakewood’s focus on the homeowner, and the custom-designed cabinetry with solid wood shaker-style doors lends more than a touch of style to the room. Most plans also feature a pantry in the kitchen for even more convenience. The bathrooms can easily be described as blissful, with shaker cabinets with solid maple doors, designer faucets and accessories, fullwidth mirrors, ceramic floor tiles and quartz countertops. The main bathroom holds a soaker tub surrounded by designer ceramic tile, while the ensuite features a shower with a semi-frameless glass enclosure and hisand-hers sinks (in most plans.) Many plans also include a main floor powder room with elegant laminate flooring.
Each home has a gas outlet for a barbecue, perfect for outdoor entertaining, and every yard is enclosed. For larger gatherings, homeowners will have access to an outdoor amenity space with a community garden. “Lakewood always builds quality homes,” says Sonnenberg. “Some are available to move in to tomorrow; we also have some Phase 2 homes that will be available between now and the end of June.” Homes at The Heights start at $359,900 for a two-bedroom-and-den home. For more information, visit www.theheightsliving.ca, call 778-545-8737 or visit the showhomes at 2845 and 2855 156th Street, Surrey, open daily except Friday between 12 and 5 p.m.
