New Westminster’s Pattullo Position Paper tour premiered in Burnaby this week. City councillors are taking turns telling city councils in the region that New West wants any new Pattullo to be a tolled, four-lane structure. Coun. Bill Harper spoke to Burnaby council on Monday and got a mixed reception. Mayor Wayne Wright held a well-attended press conference last week to state the city’s position. But there’s still a need to take the message on the road, Harper says. “We think it’s that important,” said Harper. “We’ve been reticent in the past to put out a position in a forceful manner. We decided to take the bull by the horns. We want to make sure everyone in the region knows our position.” Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said some people in his city think even four lanes is too generous for the Pattullo. There’s already a lot of congestion on his streets as drivers connect between the bridge and the freeway, he said. Please see 6 LANES, A11

CITYPAGE ART IN THE LIBRARY The New Westminster Public Library is displaying two unique exhibits in March. On the Ramp are Esther Johnson’s watercolours. Esther, who is legally blind, started painting at age 90 at the George Derby Artworks Studio. At first painting from memory, her boats and flowers are joyful and colourful. Her art is a way to express her creativity and help her access her memories and share them with others. Upstairs on the Art Panels is Through the Lens in New West, the winning photographs from the WINS (Welcoming and Inclusive New Westminster) Photography Contest. The contest invited photographers to show their visions of New Westminster as a welcoming and inclusive place to live, play and work. The art is available for viewing at any time during the Library open hours. The New Westminster Public Library is at 716 6th Avenue; 604-527-4660, www.nwpl.ca.
BE COYOTE AWARE THIS SPRING Spring is denning season for coyotes living in the Vancouver area. Coyotes build their dens in concealed locations like secluded parts of parks, behind thick blackberry bushes, and if given the opportunity, underneath abandoned buildings. With new pups to protect, coyotes may become aggressive if approached near denning sites for the next couple of months. If you come across an active den site or notice coyote pups, please report it to the coyote information phone line, 604-681-WILD, and avoid the area. Please also keep dogs on leash in and around parks, as curiousity can lead to unnecessary conflicts between coyotes and pets. It is also advised to remove potential coyote attractants from yards and parks. Garbage, yard fruit, bird feeders and pet food will attract opportunistic coyotes. From April to July, young coyotes will be learning the skills they need to survive in the city. By reducing attractants, coyotes will learn to hunt for their own favourite food, small rodents such as mice and rats, rather than learning to depend on people for food. For more information or to report a coyote sighting or den site, please call 604-681-WILD.
FRASER CEMETERY SPRING CLEANING Please be advised that beginning March 24, 2014, the staff at the Fraser Cemetery will begin removing items placed near grave markers in preparation for this season’s grounds maintenance. Items such as boxes, shells, toys, tripods, trees, shrubs and plants are not permitted as per the Cemetery Bylaw 7068, 2006, and will be removed. Please call the Fraser Cemetery if you have any questions at 604-522-1323.

But the group has not discussed who they would support, including current trustees. “We’re planning a parents meeting (for mid-April) to mobilize a broad group across neighbourhoods and across schools to determine those things such as what skills and type of people we want on our school board,” said Slade-Kerr.

For the record The column “So: Was it a good deal” (NewsLeader, March 7) about the city’s sale of the Merchant Square office tower missed an important piece of context. In comparing the $36.5M sale price with a recently sold Uptown office tower property, the cost required to prepare the building for tenants was not noted. The RBC building in Uptown is already leased and tenantready. The Downtown property is not. The “fit-out” for this property was estimated by the city to cost $9.5M. Hence the price per square foot would be $335 sq. ft. for Merchant Square and $472 sq. ft. for the Uptown RBC building.

WRITING WORKSHOP Accessing memory to enhance your writing is the subject of a workshop at the New Westminster Public Library.
Page as Bone, Blood as Ink will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at 7:00 pm. As writers, we often seek to access memory. At times, we circle the same topic or theme over and over, knowing there is more, but not knowing how to get to it. Through simple breathing techniques and group writing exercises, Jonina Kirton shows how to find that way in. Suddenly, something that has eluded us for weeks, months and even years finds its way to the page and we are blessed with a piece of writing that is a sacred text. Jonina Kirton is a Métis/Icelandic poet/author who brings her experience as a graduate of the Simon Fraser University’s Writer’s Studio and as a sacred circle facilitator to her writing and teaching. The writing workshop is sponsored by the Royal City Literary Arts Society and the Library. Register at 604-527-4667 or secretary@ rclas.com. Fraser River chosen name for new school Fraser River Middle School will be the name of the new school to be built on the site where John Robson elementary currently sits. The New Westminster board of education unanimously approved the choice at its meeting on Tuesday. A committee struck by the board had recommended last year the new school keep the John Robson name. But trustees opted to maintain consistency in naming middle schools after their location and not people. Also, Robson, a former B.C. premier who represented New Westminster, had a reputation for being anti-Chinese. Fraser River narrowly edged out West Side Middle School in a community survey as the top choice for the new name. Construction of the new school is to begin in April. Crews are to move Robson’s

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: This photo of a great blue heron was captured by Frank White in Glenbrook Ravine Park last Friday.
Kicking the habit Admitted problem gambler Joyce Ross said her lawsuit against the BC Lottery Corporation was not about recouping her own losses, but exposing flaws in BCLC’s voluntary-exclusion gamblers program to protect others in future. But with all due deference, it’s hard to see the North Delta woman’s recent lawsuit, in which she alleged she lost $78,000 at Surrey’s Fraser Downs and Langley’s Cascades casinos between 2007 and 2010 – in spite of having signed herself into the voluntary exclusion program – as more than another gamble that failed to pay off. It is churlish to want to crow at another’s misfortune. Addicted gamblers deserve empathy. However, B.C. Supreme Court Justice John Truscott – in finding the casinos were not negligent – was right to conclude that gamblers, like Ross, who volunteer for self–exclusion and then try to cheat the system by avoiding detection, should not be given special treatment. He said it was Ross’ primary responsibility to stay out of the casinos. In a practical sense, as he pointed out, to award her money because she was in the self-exclusion program would only encourage other gamblers to join the program to make similar claims. Rather than suing BCLC, Ross’ best hope of changing the system would be to run for provincial office on an anti-gambling platform. Then she would participate in a forum directly with the unseen partner in all problem gambling scenarios, and the biggest problem gambler in B.C. Principal enabler and beneficiary of problem gambling, liquor and tobacco consumption among the people of B.C. is the provincial government – and it seems unwilling, and unable, to kick the habit of the revenues it gathers from others’ addictions. —Peace Arch News/Black Press

Seeking a return to order of things As the father of a female teen, I have many questions. And I know there are even more questions that I don’t even know about yet. I also know that there are questions to which I probably really don’t want to know the answers. However, I do have one question in particular. I’d like to know why a neat, clean and highly organized child loses those attributes in alarming escalations upon entry and progression through teenhood. Apparently, tidy habits are recovered upon exit from the teen years, but I have yet to personally witness this. Can one wish upon a strand of DNA? I am aware and somewhat buoyed by the knowledge that this descent into environmental chaos is not a unique phenomenon. I have spoken to many parents with teens, and they confirm similar experiences, e.g.: The teen arrives home. Once through the door, apparel begins

The jacket may find a stair railing, perhaps the top of a bureau, but it is definitely not mated with a clothes hanger. The trail continues down to the teen’s room. Pullover, shirt, socks, pants and underwear are all added to previous items already carpeting the floor, discarded along the shortest route to the shower. The room itself ? Imagine a cyclone striking an American Eagle warehouse and you’d have an appropriate visual. What lurks under those multiple mounds of clothes? Lost treasures? My missing frying pan? This once was the beloved space occupied by a meticulous youngster, with everything in its place, and a place for every thing. It is now occupied by a hormonal human puzzle factory, which litters its lair with cast-off clothing like bones in a dragon’s den. Some of it is unfamiliar, since it apparently belongs to friends. Apparently, these kindred spirits frequently share fashions, and have no qualms in littering each other’s rooms—perhaps in some sort of friendly territory-marking ritual. Upstairs, the mayhem continues. Textbooks are spread akimbo on the kitchen island, coffee table, couch, or any other horizontal surface. Bags, rags, rings, things and other assorted detritus—spun off

Previously proud, gleaming pots fester in the sink—gooey and glued with unrecognizable foodstuffs. The stainless steel refrigerator doors bear the fingerprints of the guilty, and the stove is covered in spits and spatters from culinary calamity. To this I return each day. Daily, I issue decrees and heated threats of dire consequences, to no avail. The teen has shed and fed. It moves on... ... until Sunday afternoon, when a stunning transformation takes place. The teen cleans, sorts, tidies, launders and folds. The condition is fleeting. However, there lies hope in the universal order of things. Andrew Holota is editor of the Abbotsford News.

COMMENT
We’re trying to preserve livability in our city Most New Westminster residents, including Mayor Wayne Wright, prefer the fourlane and tolling of the Pattullo Bridge as viable solutions to the increased traffic on Royal Avenue and nearby areas. But Surrey does not agree and favours six lanes. Surrey City Coun. Barbara Steele says a six-lane Pattullo would decrease congestion and increase the number of trips. Surrey City Coun. Barinder Rasode also commented that the province should intervene and force a solution to replace the Pattullo if there is farther delay or resistance to a new bridge from New West. What does Surrey want from us? Just take whatever they throw at us? How would they feel if the province forced Surrey to agree to a four-lane Pattullo Bridge? We are not blocking, resisting or delaying any viable solutions. This is our home and we will do and fight however and whatever is necessary to maintain our livability and safety for everyone. The six-lane bridge will cost more. The Surrey-Coquitlam option might be one of the solutions to help the residents of all cities involved. Surrey’s population is increasing. More population equals more cars equals more traffic equals more congestion. Catalina Trinidad New Westminster
Let’s not be dense about this Before New Westminster City Council approves any more high-rises we need to consider the consequences of earthquake. The report by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (Vancouver Sun, Oct. 30/13) reviewed several recent studies of the Cascadia subduction zone off southwest B.C. and found that we are not prepared for “the big one.” The IBC review estimated damage in B.C. from an earthquake and tsunami at $75 billion, not counting injury and loss of life. “There will be damages to buildings in Vancouver, Richmond and New Westminster…”
During earthquakes, the process of liquefaction can turn loose wet soil into quicksand. High rises and high density development on the floodplain come to mind. We need to consult the scientists who did the studies to assess what we need to do. (These first studies in 20 years and the scientists who did them are detailed in the book Full Rip 9.1 by Sandi Doughton). The more people and buildings the more damage. How many people would all the proposed high-rises add to our population? How many people on average are we adding to the city each year? How many people live in Queensborough today? How many do you expect when the new Official Community Plan is built out? Do we have an emergency plan? How many people live in the rest of the city now? How many do you expect when the new OCP is built out? What total population do you have in mind for the city? Why this rate of growth? Hildegard Bechler New Westminster
access is aLready avaiLabLe Regarding ACORN protestors who want a $10 flat fee for Internet access for low income earners, I have this to say... We live in a culture of entitlement, it’s sad to say. The New Westminster Public Library offers free Internet access. So unless people have mobility issues or live in a remote area where they can’t get to the library, it’s difficult to have sympathy for them. Lisa Finnigan New Westminster
Men need heLp too A new approach to mental health is long overdue, including health care for men. Too many men are falling through the cracks and end up homeless, alone and in need. Where can he get help? If there was a men’s health center, staffed by male counsellors to provide medical and emotional support. All too often, men receive the blame and guilt, but nothing else.
Where can he go? We have youth centres, women’s centres, seniors centres and pet centres. But no health centres for men to come and ask for help, most importantly for domestic violence issues. Give him a chance to stop the violence, before it starts. Because by then it could be too late. The best way to get through the tense moments is to be coached by somebody who has been there already. More than 80% of all suicides in Canada are men. The silent crisis continues... Al Janes New Westminster

We need to speak the Language China is the world’s second largest economy and on its way to soon becoming the largest. The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada notes that Canadians’ “Asia competency” is lacking with 60% of Asia practitioners noting the difficulty of finding qualified Canadians with sufficient Asia knowledge to help their companies succeed in Asia. A Mandarin-speaking person has a great advantage in the job market and in the business world, on account of Chinese being spoken by more people than any other single language in the world and it being the second most prevalent language of business, after English. For over 30 years Edmonton school board has had a Mandarin bilingual program that has 2,000 students enrolled spread over 12 schools. And Edmonton, unlike New Westminster, is not even on the Pacific Rim with China as a neighbour. For the past couple of years, a Mandarin bilingual program (MBP) has technically been available to all students in B.C,, but unfortunately not in New Westminster. Paul Esslinger New Westminster

Col. Moody’s photo album acquired by Royal B.C. Museum A 150-year-old photo album owned by one of New Westminster and the province’s earliest builders has been acquired by the Royal B.C. Museum. The album, which has drawings as well as photos, highlights the work and travels of Col. Richard Moody who commanded the British Royal Engineers based in New Westminster. It was bought online from an English auction house in December for just over $26,000. Friends of the BC Archives, a non-profit organization, contributed $10,000 toward the purchase, with the rest coming from the museum and the museum foundation’s acquisition funds. A museum spokesperson said it was put up for sale by a former member of the U.K. Royal Navy who found it in a flea market in the 1970s. There are more than 90 photos, including four believed to have been taken in 1859, and there’s also a pencil sketch of Moody’s home in New Westminster. “The album’s historical value is unquestionable, as these five images expand our knowledge of what life looked like in colonial British Columbia,” said Don Bourdon, a museum curator.

Pedestrian struck on E. Eighth A female pedestrian suffered minor injuries after being struck in a crosswalk at East Eighth Avenue and Cherry Street last Thursday evening (March 6). Police said she was struck by a vehicle going approximately 30 km/h just before 7 p.m. She was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where she was treated and released three hours later. Police say charges are being considered against the driver, although alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
The photos in the album include a shot of the Moody children (far left) and a photo of Col. Moody with an unidentified man (left).

continued from page a5
The museum believes the album will complement a collection of letters by Mary Moody, the colonel’s wife, donated by Moody family descendants in the 1970s, because it shows the places and people she referred to in her letters home. Moody commanded the Columbia detachment of the British Royal Engineers in the colony of British Columbia and was chief commissioner of lands and works
from 1858 to 1863. Moody Park in New Westminster and the city of Port Moody is named after him. The album was put on display at the Royal BC Museum on March 4 and remained there until March 10 before being moved into the archives. The museum plans to digitize the photographs and eventually make them available to researchers by appointment. ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

6-lanes not good for Surrey: Corrigan ⫸
MY RECENT SALES:
continued from front page
“You can tell most of us are worried about the impact of that traffic coming to our city,” Corrigan told Harper. “I’m very sympathetic to the position that it’s a tolled four-lane bridge. And an option to restrict truck traffic (on the Pattullo) is appropriate.” Corrigan also said Surrey’s support for an untolled, six-lane replacement contradicts its plan for a thriving city centre on the south side of the Fraser River. “The only way they’re going to create their own Surrey Centre is to make it difficult to get to Vancouver,” said Corrigan. “We need another city centre on the other side of the Fraser River, and Surrey is that place.”
Coun. Paul McDonell said he’d like to see the Pattullo demolished— not replaced. “I honestly don’t think we need that bridge,” said McDonell. “If they’re going to build a bridge then ban the trucks. There’s no reason for the trucks to come in there at all.” Coun. Sav Dhaliwal said a new four-lane bridge would add traffic because the crossing would be safer than it is now and more vehicles will spill onto Burnaby streets. He added he wouldn’t support a new bridge unless a tunnel is built to connect the Pattullo to Highway 1. Burnaby council directed its city staff to come up with a report before it decides its position on the Pattullo.

So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1. It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

The diminutive Fiat 500 goes big The Fiat 500 is cute but might not be the most practical choice as a family vehicle. Sure, it has room for four, a peppy personality (even with its base 101 horsepower engine,) but accessing the rear seats isn’t the easiest and the cargo room is minimal. Enter the all-new-for-2014 Fiat 500L: The “L” stands for “large” so those interior volume deficiencies listed with its pint-sized sibling are no more. Dimensionally, the L is 27 inches longer, 6 inches taller in height and in width and there’s an extra 42 percent when it comes to inside space. But wait, there’s more. Literally. The L comes with two additional doors to allow for easy access to the rear

seats. And room for five passengers. It loses a little bit of its pinch-the-cheeks cuteness but its practicality makes up for it. In the driver’s seat, you have an almost unadulterated outward visibility. The 500L features a segment-
exclusive glass from the A- to D-pillars that provide nearly 360-degree panoramic views. Parking is easy because you can pretty much see out of all four corners. And the 500L – even with its “large” designation – still fits comfortably into urban settings. Driving the 500L, I noticed it doesn’t have quite the same amount of panache as the 500 Turbo. Granted, it’s a heavier vehicle. But to still keep some of the driving fun behind the wheel, Fiat has outfitted it with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that provides 160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft. of torque. It’s also is available with two transmission options. Firstly, there’s a 6-speed manual. Then there’s an available 6−Speed Euro
Confessions of a Curber I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room. So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house. Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired. I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it. I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days. This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist. “Car for sale. Served me well, but wife wants a new car. Accident and damage free. Looking to sell fast, low price. Cash only. Call cell for info.” I got a text message from a woman across town. I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled. When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute. To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I
wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically. As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents. Now, I’m not a good liar. So I simply said, No. It’s her fault for not asking for a CarProof or ICBC vehicle history report. That seemed to do it. She was pleased and drove away with a smile on her face. As for me, I went home with a fat wallet. A few days later, I got a text: “Got CarProof report. Three accidents?!?!? Need money back now!!!” I panicked. But not for long. I was getting good at this. I just got a new cell number. She didn’t know my name – that old fake ID worked great. And she had no idea where I lived. Finding me would wear her out. I was in the clear. But will I be so lucky next time? *Curber – An individual posing as a private seller, but selling vehicles for profit as a business. Alexandra Straub says the Fiat 500 never felt cramped during her time testing it out. Twin Clutch “automatic.” The latter of the two costs an additional $1,450 and came equipped on my 500L Lounge trim. To be honest, this dual clutch transmission was my least favourite part of the vehicle. It felt as though the gearing was off or it had some sort of gremlin inside causing a raucous to disturb the smooth functionality of what I would have expected. On the flip side, there’s nothing that I felt was fundamentally wrong with it. The transmission changed gears, got the car moving and did exactly what it was supposed to do. It also just felt weird/awkward to me
and unlike any other dual clutch transmission, I’ve operated. Perhaps it is one of those features I would just need to get used to over time but our time together wasn’t long enough for me to embrace its quirks! There were, however, other highlights of the 500L. The Lounge trim comes standard with leather trimmed bucket seats and front heated seats, perfect for those chilly mornings. An upgraded item that was optioned on the L was the Uconnect system with a 6.5-inch screen (the standard is a 5-inch screen) complete with Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio and a Beats Premium Audio
System ($500.) If you’re a music lover, this is a great to add to a Fiat. Besides, I find that the Uconnect media interface is one of the most intuitive infotainment systems to work with in the industry. Electronic Stability Control (ESC,) Hill Start Assist and 4− Wheel ABS brakes are part of its DNA along with a ParkView rear back−up camera, dual zone climate controls and steering wheel mounted audio controls. When cruising along at highway speeds, road noise is kept to a minimum, which allowed me to enjoy the music via the Beats stereo system a little more.
In corners, the 500L doesn’t have as tight of a setup as the 500, so don’t push it too hard since body roll is more evident. Perhaps what really stands about this compact car is just how much people room there is inside. I never felt cramped nor did my passengers. Not to mention the 633L (22.4 cubic feet) of storage behind the second row seats. • The MSRP of the 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge is $25,995. With the options and destination, the price as tested comes to $30,850. Alexandra.Straub@ drivewaybc.ca

Refreshed RX350 ups the sportiness factor
Looks Over the last several years, Lexus has taken a more aggressive design approach with its latest introductions. The front grille is more dynamic, designed to mimic a spindle used in a fabric loom. This is a tip of the hat to the origins of the Toyota Company as a textile maker. LED marker lights and a deeper chin spoiler frame the more aggressive grille. The larger 19-inch wheels come in a smoked satin finish and the suspension is tweaked for more performance. Around back, all RX 350 models come with a power rear lift gate. One of the reasons the RX is so popular is the aggressive starting price. The base model, with the same engine as this F-Sport, starts at $46,150 making it a very attractive alternative to buying a spendy German SUV. The F-Sport model is $55,400 but comes almost fully loaded, with only two options available, the Intuitive Parking Assist and Heads up Display, which brings the price to $58,850
Inside The 2014 RX is a mid-cycle refresh of the model that was introduced in 2010. Unfortunately, Lexus didn’t refresh the inside of the cabin at all, keeping the updates to the exterior and driveline. Not to say that the inside is a disappointment, rather that some things could be tweaked. I’ll start with the positives. The cabin has plenty of room for a family of four with a big back seat and

lots of legroom. The materials used are of the highest order and the RX put together well. The controller for the communications and navigation system is unique in the industry, mimicking a computer mouse. It feels very natural and the driver rarely needs to take their eyes of the road. The array of buttons and their less than logical layout could do with an update. The F-Sport comes which heated and cooled seats but it took me about five minutes to locate the switch in the centre armrest. The dial for the tuner is as far away from the driver as it could be and the seating position is very high.
Drive At the heart of all RX 350 models is a very versatile 3.5L V6 engine with 270hp. The F-Sport is made sportier by the inclusion of an 8-speed automatic transmission instead of the regular 6-speed unit. By adding two more gears this new model really jumps away from a stop and pulls very well to highway speeds. Two extra gears make a world of difference, helping to bring the engine to life and improving fuel economy. The suspension has also been modified to include a sport tuned dampers and springs. I could certainly tell this RX is different, in some city conditions, the ride can be very choppy and not what typical Lexus buyers would expect. The up side is that open road driving is much more sure-footed and dynamic. When the RX

Toyota is known for building high quality cars with fantastic resale value and has grabbed more Canadian Black Book “Best Retained Value” Awards than any other manufacturer. In the Lexus line of cars and SUVs, the best seller by far is the RX 350 midsized SUV. Built using parts common to other Lexus and Toyota products, it represents a lot of what Toyota/Lexus is doing right. The engine is powerful but still thrifty enough for most families, the space is generous and the design is elegant. For buyers that are looking for a bit more performance from the RX, the F-Sport package adds visual and emotional punch.
same interior space as a mid-sized sedan but sits higher for greater outward viability, comes standard with all-wheel drive and has a high resale value. The RX 350 F-Sport takes all the goodness of the regular RX and makes it a bit more aggressive, especially in the acceleration front. Potential buyers would be well advised to drive both the regular model and this sportier version to see if you can live with the choppy ride, it really is dramatic.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.
Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.
Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.
What’s going on here?

The New Westminster Police Department intends to remain tough on medical marijuana dispensaries after new laws take effect April 1. Health Canada is introducing new rules to facilitate dispensaries, but the NWPD issued a release saying they “will continue with business as usual” in the face of the amended laws. Medical marijuana dispensaries will remain illegal in New Westminster after April
1, said the statement. “Marijuana dispensaries are not granted business licences and therefore can be shut down for a variety of reasons,” said the release. “Those employed at the dispensaries can be subject to criminal charges for the possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and for trafficking in marijuana.” The police pointed out they’ve taken action in the past and will do so again if
the public is at risk or if they find out marijuana is being dispensed without a doctor’s prescription. Last summer, police raided the NICE Dispensary on 12th Street and shut it down. Operators Justin Cleveland, Matthew Lee and Kevin Lee were charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, while the two Lees were also charged with trafficking in a controlled substance.

director Peter Battistin said he still uses Gair’s points formula for determining athletic award winners at the end of the school year. Some of Gair’s administrative philosophies and policies are still in use two decades later. “He was the role model on how things were to be run,” said Battistin, who added Gair was always in contact with the department. “He was out of the system but he was still a mentor.” Gair also coached the Earl Marriott Mariners senior girls team, which included his niece, to the Surrey school’s first
provincial title in 2003. In retirement, golf became the Crescent Beach resident’s new love, said Gair’s former spouse Carole Gair, a longtime White Rock swim coach. “He was out golfing with his best friends, so if you have to go, I guess that’s the way you would want it,” she said, adding that he had a history of heart trouble.
