More staff hired for public works By Treena Mielke
Sour: Rhubarb Days at Rimbey Farmer’s Market might have brought a smile to most faces, but Connor Ibbotson, 12, and his 10-year-old brother Ronan found the rhubarb to be quite sour and definitely in need of some sugar. APN Photo
The Town of Rimbey public works department’s regular boost of summer manpower will extend to year-round employment. At its Mon. June 10 meeting, following an in-camera session, council agreed to hire another full-time public works employee. Mayor Rick Pankiw said council decided to increase staff as public works foreman Rick Schmidt has been working many hours of overtime to keep up with the increased demand. Former public works foreman Vern Browne has dropped his hours to four days a week, so manpower is presently at a premium. To help pick up the slack, Steve Wolfer, a town employee for about three years, who worked at the arena in the winter and with public works in the summer, will move over to public works full time. More development, additional roads and green spaces keeps public work crews busy, Pankiw said, adding that an extra staff is certainly needed to keep the town running efficiently. Schmidt is pleased to have the additional help on a full-time basis. “I want to see weed spraying done and the sidewalks swept downtown on a regular basis,” he said. “I don’t expect perfection, but I want to do a good job.”
Bentley School modifies educational structure By Treena Mielke Changes at Bentley High School introduced last year which were geared towards propelling the school towards being a major player in today’s competitive educational arena will be tweaked and improved next year. Recently principal Lane Moore and vice principal Stephen Lush met with parents at the school to discuss modifications which will be made to the personalized self direct-

ed learning philosophy introduced last year at the school. “It has been good to see the year-end survey results and the positive feedback. We have also had a number of other schools and districts interested in our direction and we have done numerous presentations about it,” said Moore. “The years of sitting in your desk every day, for an eighty minute class has changed,” he added. “We have leveraged technology to

The school took the leap last year to move from the traditional classroom/teacher setting to a personalized, self-directed learning philosophy. While Moore remains excited about the new path the school is following, he said the name appears to be misleading as students and parents thought that they would be on their own to learn without teacher support or instruction. help create a classroom setting where students can take more ownership and move ahead or slow down based on their needs.” Moore said such an educational structure will allow students to work anywhere and at any time, all under the guidance and instruction of the teacher. “Students come to class to get the main concepts, then practice and work on the assignments, when not in their scheduled classes.”

Multiple arrests made by Rimbey RCMP after large scale investigation Rimbey RCMP were extremely busy this week executing search warrants at several residences in the community where illicit drugs, illegal guns, prohibited weapons and stolen property was seized in addition to our usual calls for service. Multiple arrests Over the last few days, Rimbey Mounties have made multiple arrests in relation to a large-scale investigation which involved a number of men in Rimbey and the area who were involved in a web of crime. Under the authority of search warrants granted by the courts, officers searched several properties in Ponoka County near Rimbey, Bluffton and Hoadley. So far, five adult men from Rimbey and surrounding area have been arrested and charged in relation to the investigation. Stolen items recovered Cocaine, illegal firearms, prohibited weapons, drug paraphernalia, and stolen property valued at over $40,000 has been recovered. Stolen items recovered include: horse tack, saddle, HD large televisions, XBox and PS3 consoles and games, hockey equipment, a large leather sectional couch, oil field equipment, tools and countless other items. Many items have been identified as being from the house break and enter reported last week, where a large number of hockey jerseys were reported stolen. Some of the stolen authentic signed and framed NHL jerseys have been recovered by the Edmonton Police Service who assisted Rimbey Detachment in seizing the items in their jurisdiction. Senseless crime Rimbey police are also investigating a case where a teenager went to a bush party and parked her car away from all the action.... or so she thought! Unknown culprit(s) completely trashed the 2011 KIA car by denting it and smashing the glass. If you have information to assist police in identifying the vandals in this senseless crime, please call the detachment. Gun stolen A local county resident reported that his gun safe at home had been stolen. Police have been diligently following up on all leads and made a seizure from a residence near Hoadley in relation to the case. The stolen firearm was located but had been modified from it’s original state. Regardless, it was still dangerous to the public and officers are thankful to have it off the streets and in a safe place. The 27-year-old male who was caught with the gun is facing numerous charges which include possession of cocaine, illegal

firearms, possession of stolen property and other serious charges. Disgusting act A local county resident called police when they found their house had been broken into. Further investigation by police revealed that an unknown culprit entered their rural home but didn’t take anything. The would-be thief then left the house and checked out the victim’s camper, where again nothing was taken. Unbelievably, the bad guy then climbed into the owner’s boat
where again he did not take anything... but he did leave something! If you could believe it... he defecated in the boat. There was a bathroom in the house and the camper... and he had to do his business in the boat! Really...I don’t make this stuff up. Devastated by theft A local water sport enthusiast fell victim to a thief who stole the wake board handle holder off their Sea Doo parked in front of their house. Police offered Victim Services in this case because the owner was com-
pletely devastated to not be able to hit the lake for some fun after the long winter we just endured! If you have any information regarding these or any other crimes, please call the local Rimbey RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers: PHONE: 1-800-222-8477 #8477 on Telus Mobility *8477 on Rogers AT&T Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work! Father’s Day came and went this year, punctuated as always with bittersweet memories and the scent of lilacs. And, because I once had a dad, even though it was long ago and far away, during that special day I keep a tiny Treena Mielke little corner of my mind On The Other Side reserved to simply remember him. I remember moments. I remember the way the Clearwater River tumbled and roared around a bend, finally meeting up with a pool of quiet tranquility. We fished there in that quiet pool, my dad and I. And if I close my eyes and imagine, I can still feel the sun warm on my hair and the safe feeling of knowing my dad was casting his line right beside me. My dad was my very first music teacher. He sang in the car, so I did, too. We sang songs about Scotland and old westerns and some crazy, mixed up tunes we didn’t know all the way through and we were happy. We traveled on dusty gravel roads flanked with ditches dotted with Indian Paint Brushes and Brown Eyed Susans. It was good being young and having a dad and going fishing lots and learning how music can soften the edges of the harshest days. I smile as I remember, but the clock above the kitchen sink ticks ominously and I put away my memories and move on. Trying to gather my offspring and their offspring and get them altogether under one roof for Father’s Day or any holiday, for that matter, is somewhat like herding cats. “Tonight,” my daughter wailed. “I thought you were doing it next week.” “I can’t possible come,” child number two said. “My family is all sick.”
My son simply did not answer his text. But, in the end they all came, spilling through the front door in stages, the little boys lugging in a T-shirt they had bought for grandpa, each fighting tenaciously for a grip on the handle of the gift bag as they laboriously made it up the stairs. They presented it with a flourish. It was accepted in the same manner. My daughter, who came late, brought the promised rhubarb crisp. And to me, at least, it seemed her offering made the get-together complete and perfect. She picked it out of her own yard and cooked it her very own self. It was delicious, but it was more than that. It was a reminder that as much as Father’s Day or Mother’s Day or any holiday in our lives for that matter, brings with it so many changes, some things remain delightfully and wonderfully the
same. Rhubarb shouts of families and get-togethers and kitchens. Rhubarb is coal and wood stoves, water pails, barbed wire fences and spring. Rhubarb is toddlers wearing overalls and no shoes playing in the sunshine while their mom watches them out the kitchen window. Rhubarb is home. Rhubarb is constant, inevitable and good. Rhubarb grows, no matter what. And even as we go through life’s little game of hardball where unexpected changes can leave us confused and, sometimes, a little frightened, some things will remain, now and forever, the same. Things like rhubarb crisp and families and new babies and flowers that grow in roadside ditches and music. And those are good things, very good things!

Rodeo queen contestants vying for this year’s title
Kaitlin Malterer By Treena Mielke Four lovely young ladies are vying for the coveted title of Miss Rimbey Rodeo this year. For 17-year-old Kaitlin Malterer from Ponoka, the experience is fun and exciting. “I was inspired by seeing other
Whitaney Block rodeo queens and I wanted to give it a try myself,” she said. Malterer, an accomplished horsewoman who participates in rodeo events and also performs with her horse outside the rodeo arena, is pleased that horsemanship plays a major role in being rodeo queen.
Martina Holtkamp
KC Goller
Malterer, sponsored by Stouts Trucking, lives on a farm near Ponoka and has three horses. She is a member of the Central Alberta Beef 4-H Club and the Western Central Rebel Riders Horse Club. The Grade 11 student enjoys riding her horses, rodeoing and training horses. “I show cattle as well and I love to be outdoors,” she said. Whitaney Block, a 16-year-old Grade 10 student from Edson was selected as last year’s Alberta High School Rodeo Queen. It was an experience she thoroughly enjoyed and one that she says will help her represent Rimbey well. “It was an amazing year,” she said.
Participating in the Calgary Stampede parade, filling in for Miss Rodeo Canada, attending schools and visiting the children’s hospital were some of the highlights, she recalled. Block, sponsored by A & W competes in high school rodeos and CARA rodeos and has been in 4-H for nine years. She lives on an acreage near Edson where her family has 16 horses and seven dogs. She and her younger sister help look after the dogs which are raised to be bred and sold. The girls use the money from the sale of the dogs to enter rodeos. Continued on page 14

Educational structure Continued from Page 1 “This couldn’t be further from the truth so a rebrand to a personalized blended learning environment was needed,” he said. “This definition better suits the educational structure we are creating.” Blended learning combines traditional teaching methods with additional instruction that allows for digital content, personalized learning and interaction with other students. Also happening next year will be ‘response to intervention Fridays,’ a strategy which will help identify students who need extra support and formalize programs to assist them. PRIDE projects which include student leadership, mentorship, community volunteerism, work experience or special projects will be
developed next year. A couple examples of projects already discussed are an outdoor lunch area and an indoor living classroom. The personalized blending learning environment is being expanded this year to include grades six to eight. Moore noted that any change can leave room for uncertainty, but he is confident his school is heading in the right direction. “We understand that this educational structure is a work in progress and we will need to continue to modify as it grows. We believe that the educational structure we are creating will ultimately meet more students’ needs and prepare them for the real world.”

Council tables decision By Treena Mielke Council isn’t quite ready to comply with a request by Rimbey Historical Society to provide a letter of support endorsing the Smithson International Truck Museum as the town’s official community visitor information centre. The museum currently serves as a visitor information centre, sharing the responsibility with the Beatty House in the summer. At its June 9 meeting, Mayor Rick Pankiw noted the Beatty House and the truck museum are both used as visitor information centres during the summer. “We need to meet with both sides before we make a decision,” he said. Cheryl Jones, curator and park administrator for Rimbey Historical Society and Pas Ka Poo Historical Park addressed council about the issue in a letter. She said members of the historical society attended Travel Alberta’s annual spring training and showcase conference in Edmonton earlier this year. “This is a great opportunity to share with other visitor information centres across the province how great the town of Rimbey is and all we have to offer.” At the conference, historical society members learned about the tourism highway signage program offered by Travel Alberta. “This program encourages community visitor information centres to become accredited,” Jones said. Benefits of becoming accredited include receiving new tourism trailblazer highway signs, being featured on official Alberta road map, in the Alberta travel planner, lodging and camping guides and being mentioned on the Travel Alberta website. All benefits are free. The issue has been tabled until council’s July meeting.

Hoadley church to celebrate 80-year anniversary next Sunday after service Submitted The Hoadley Evangelical Missionary Church will mark its 80th anniversary with cake and coffee following the morning service this coming Sunday (June 22). On June 10, 1934, the first church service was held in an empty pool hall in Old Hoadley. A packing crate was used for the pulpit for a single lady preacher and the pews were planks on nail kegs. Yet 45 people attended. The second building, built on the hill beside the Hoadley cemetery in the mid’50s, was struck by lightning and burned in 1981. Community members helped donate towards rebuilding. The church

It sponsors Community Unity events at the Hoadley Hall. The church rents the hall and buys the food while the Hoadley Happy Gang cooks the meal. A minimal fee is charged. In the past, the church has imported a magician and a ventriloquist for entertainment at these social evenings. Bob Layton will be the guest speaker this year. Previously, many from the community enjoyed church-sponsored steak and lobster suppers at the Hoadley Hall in the

Outbreak remains active in Edmonton Zone RED DEER – Measles disease activity in both the Central and Calgary Zones of Alberta Health Services (AHS) has decreased to such an extent as to meet criteria necessary to lift the measles outbreak first declared on April 29, 2014. As such, effective immediately, AHS has declared this measles outbreak over in the Central and Calgary Zones of AHS. This outbreak declaration remains in effect at this time in the Edmonton Zone of AHS. Though standard measles surveillance and follow-up work undertaken by AHS will continue across all Zones, temporary changes to the routine childhood immunization schedule – implemented for the duration of this outbreak only – are no longer in effect in Central and Calgary Zones. Specifically, effective immediately, AHS will no longer offer an early additional dose of measles vaccine to infants six months of age to less than 12 months of age who are living in or travelling to the Central or Calgary Zones of AHS. This additional early dose of measles vaccine was recommended while the outbreak was active in both of these Zones as a means of offering short-term added protection during that time of increased
risk of exposure to disease. As the outbreak declaration has been lifted in Central and Calgary Zones, requests for early additional doses of measles vaccine will no longer be accommodated in either Zone. Appointments (for this additional early dose) that had already been booked prior to June 12, 2014, will be honored in both Zones, going forward. Additionally, infants travelling to Edmonton Zone or any other areas (within Canada or abroad) in which measles outbreaks are occurring, will also remain eligible to receive an additional early dose of vaccine if this travel cannot be avoided. A measles outbreak can be declared over when 42 consecutive days have passed since the last date of infectiousness of the last confirmed case of measles in a Zone, and no new cases of measles have been confirmed in that Zone in that same 42 day period. Although it has been more than 42 days since the last date of infectiousness of the last confirmed cases of measles in both Central and Calgary Zones, and no new cases of measles have been confirmed in either of these Zones, measles does continue to circulate in Alberta and worldwide. Without immunization, Al-
bertans may be at risk of contracting this potentially severe illness. AHS continues to advise all Albertans to ensure they are up to date on their immunizations, including measles vaccine. Measles vaccine is available, free of charge, through Alberta’s publicly-funded immunization program: • All Albertans born in or after 1970 require two documented doses of measles vaccine, to be protected. • Children in Alberta are recommended to receive these two doses of measles vaccine, administered at 12 months of age and between four and six years of age. • Infants who received an additional early dose of measles vaccine during the outbreak must still receive both of these routinely recommended doses (at 12 months of age and between four and six years of age) to be protected against measles. Additionally, Alberta children age four and older who are attending daycares/dayhomes and schools, and who have not yet received their second dose of measles vaccine, are recommended to receive this second dose as soon as possible. MLA Anglin speaks to council about proposed lodge By Treena Mielke Wildrose MLA Joe Anglin met with Rimbey town council last week to voice concerns and questions about the proposed senior’s lodge. Anglin told councillors they needed to get answers to some pertinent questions such as why the 80 units for a new lodge which was originally proposed has been dropped to 40. He also noted plans to build a 40unit lodge and renovate the 63 units at Parkland Manor into 37 larger units meant there would only be 14 new units available in Rimbey. He said there is a waiting list of 36 people, which translates to the fact the new proposed lodge will not be large enough to meet the needs of those needing this type of housing in Rimbey. “It doesn’t add up and it defeats Joe Anglin, MLA Rimbey-Rocky the purpose of aging in place,” he Mountain House-Sundre said. The MLA said council should have 403-843-2217 Office had an opportunity to Shirley Hough vote on the new proCell: REAL ESTATE posal before it was for(A Division of Eskdale Holdings Ltd.) 403-783-1961 Multiple Listing Service warded to the minister of municipal affairs. 96 acres with a very nice 1600 sq. ft. 2009 “Why didn’t you modular with handicapped access and a great huge deck might just be what you want. The package also contained proposals for the new lodge. After the meeting Mayor Rick Pankiw said Anglin’s package will be passed on to the Rimoka Housing Foundation. “We will take that package to Rimoka. At the end of the day, the Town of Rimbey has only two votes on the Rimoka board out of seven.”

Continued from page 6 Martina Holtkamp is the only Rimbey contestant. Holtkamp, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Rimbey Junior/Senior High School said she has been competing in the Rimbey rodeo for some time. “I have always looked up to the queen and I think it would be an honour to represent my own community as the 2014 rodeo queen and promote rodeo in Rimbey as well as other communities.” Holtkamp, who is sponsored by Holly’s Greenhouse, belongs to the Kansas Ridge Riders Gymkhana Group and enjoys barrel racing and pole riding. When she is not participating with her horse she enjoys snowboarding, rugby and simply being outdoors. And she loves riding. “My four little sisters and I all ride together,” she said. Competing for the honor of being rodeo queen is fun, she said. “I’m excited. I wanted to do this for a long time.” Nineteen-year-old KC Goller, sponsored by Nikirk Bros. from Leduc began rodeoing a couple of years ago. She decided to run after watching her friend compete last year. “I wanted more insight into the rodeo scene,’ she said. “There are many different sides to rodeo.” Goller competes in ladies barrels and ladies cow riding. So far she said the competition has been fun and exciting. “I learned a lot already,” she said. Goller lives on an acreage near Leduc and works as a welder’s apprentice. Her family lives near Rimbey. Last year’s Rimbey rodeo queen Kellyn Christensen said the experience was incredible. Now she is hoping for the chance to become Miss Rodeo Canada and wishes every contestant the best of luck this year running for the 2014 title. Christensen, who graduated from Ponoka Composite High School in 2012, plans to attend the University of Alberta and pursue her goals in the safety industry by becoming an occupational health and safety advisor. Christensen works for Calnash Trucking as a pilot truck driver and volunteers with the Ponoka Fish and Game Association and at the Centennial Centre. This year’s CARA rodeo will be held July 12 and 13. The local rodeo will be held July 11.

Rimbey Library to expand summer reading program to Bluffton By Treena Mielke It’s going to be a summer of great reading opportunities combined with lots of fun and excitement at the Rimbey Municipal Library and at its newly acquired summer satellite The Bluffton General Store. The summer reading program in Rimbey will begin Wed., July 2 and run until Thurs., Aug. 21. A windup party will be held Aug. 22. This year’s reading program called ‘Eureka’ promises to provide fun, entertainment and, most importantly, an excellent way to continue learning and reading in a fun and positive environment. The Eureka program at the Rimbey library will be held Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m. The program is geared towards Kindergarten to Grade 6 students. The Rimbey library’s summer reading program has expanded this year and will reach out to its young patrons in Bluffton. On Mondays, starting July 7, the Rimbey Library is coming to Bluffton General Store from 10 a.m. to noon. Drop by the store for stories, crafts, games and fun. This is a drop-in program and registration is not required. The Bluffton Surprise Party reading program will provide a few hours of excitement for elementary aged kids in a positive, relaxed atmosphere. Activities will be geared towards children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 and will run July 7 to Aug. 18. There is no fee for the program, but donations are always welcome. Librarian Jean Keetch is excited about the out-
reach project. “The store has very generously offered us space. We are funded to serve rural people and I’m pleased we are able to make a difference by offering a supplementary program in Bluffton.” Each session will be a surprise, but
will include storytelling and craft activity. As well as the Eureka Summer Reading Program at the Rimbey library, preschool story time and wiggle worms is held Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. Preschool storytime is held Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
Surprise parties are held Fridays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Let’s Go Lego is held on Saturdays and at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday during July an August is movie is shown at the library. Conoco Philips sponsors movie night.
Bluffton Chamber of Commerce member Val Hilliker, Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin, chamber member Frank Kurta, Leon Heck from Conocco Phillips and chamber member Larry Hansen took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Bluffton playground last week. Photo submitted

STRAIN In Loving Memory of Loretta Rebecca Strain of Bluffton, Alberta who passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the age of 80 years. Loretta was born on February 5, 1934 in Bonnyville, Alberta. She attended school there until she was 15 years old, at which time she went with a cousin to a convent in Orange County, California. As the convent life didn’t suit her, Loretta returned home and continued her education at Marvel Hairdressing School in Edmonton. Eventually she settled in Rimbey where she owned and operated her own business for a number of years. During that time, Loretta met and was later united in marriage to Lloyd Strain, and together they raised three children. In 1972, she sold her business and the family moved to a farm near Hoadley where she resided until her passing. Loretta loved gardening, flowers, reading, a challenging crossword puzzle, and she was an amazing cook. But her greatest joy was her grandchildren, and the smile on her face spoke volumes whenever they came to visit. Loretta will be missed greatly by us all. Loretta is survived by her beloved husband of 46 years, Lloyd; and her loving children: Darrell (Karen) Strain of Gull Lake; Shauna (Rob) McNicol of Medicine Hat; and Shane (Trudy) Strain of Sylvan Lake; as well as five treasured grandchildren: Tracy (Pete), Tyler (Noelle), Shaye, Abigail and Chloe. She is also survived by her two sisters, Margaret Kolodka, and Lucienne (Charles) Babin both of Bonnyville; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Loretta was predeceased by her parents, Eugene and Geanette Belanger; and two brothers, Edward and Raymond. With respect for Loretta’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Interment will take place at a later date in the Hoadley Cemetery, Hoadley. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Loretta’s Memory may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, #200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, Alberta T2E 2P5. Condolences to the Family may also be expressed by email to: special_reflections@telusplanet.net Cremation Arrangements for the Late Loretta Rebecca Strain entrusted to the care of

Card Of Thanks Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Ginny Grinde and the rest of the staff at the Rimbey Care Centre for the excellent care given to our mother, Gay Grundy. Their compassionate ministrations and unfailing patience made the weeks before her passing peaceful and comfortable. Also a very special thank you and huge hugs to our aunties, Grace Stout and Edna Grundy and, and our cousins, Karen Reimer and Helen Lenart, who selflessly and willingly gave so much of their time to sit with Mom, enabling us to have necessary breaks.
