Students bask in 3D printing technology Renee Andor Record Staff

A jet engine, a scale model of a house and a 3D printer are just a few of many projects to come out of G.P. Vanier Secondary School this year. Students in MEEP 12, (math, English, engineering and physics), last week put the finishing touches on the self-directed

From model houses to working jet engines - 3D printers have near limitless potential projects they designed and built this term in Steve Claassen’s engineering 12 class. Student Sandra Puga — one of three girls in the class — plans to become an architect, so she chose to create a scale model of a house. Using 3D modelling

software, she created parts like the windows, shutters, poles and doors, then printed those models out using one of the classroom’s 3D printers. (A 3D printer creates real objects from digital 3D models. Claassen’s classroom has three

printers and these printers use heated plastic to make the object, though other 3D printers can use other materials, too.) Puga also used software to create gradients on parts of her model house, like shading on the roof, and used a laser engraver to create textures, like indents in the siding on the house.

BC Hydro may need to shut down its Puntledge River generating station early this summer due to low water levels, according to Hydro’s Stephen Watson. “We may have to shut down the generating station in July because we want to try to conserve as much water as we can for that September/October period,” says Watson, adding the situation could change if the weather changes. “In dry years we have shut down generation but it’s not that common, and it’s fairly rare to do it in July.” Comox Valley Regional District senior manager of engineering services Marc Rutten adds water restrictions are heightened for areas serviced by Comox Lake, (Courtenay, Comox, and five nearby local service areas), when Hydro shuts down its generating station. “We have a back-up pump station that we (use to) pump water from the river during times when BC Hydro takes their generator out of service,” explains Rutten. “And at those times our capacity to feed the system is extremely limited so we go to Stage 3.” Stage 3 restrictions mean watering lawns, washing vehicles and filling swimming pools, hot tubs and garden ponds is not allowed at any time. Watering vegetables, flowers and shrubs is restricted to early morning and late evening and must be done with a handheld container or hand-held hose. Six-year-old philanthropist donates piggy bank fund to food bank Royston youngster learning charity early in life Scott Stanfield Record Staff

Jayda Mills has been donating her piggy bank earnings to the food bank since she was four years old. The Royston youngster, now six, delivered two shopping carts full of non-perishable items Friday to the Comox Valley Food Bank. “Her piggy bank got full again,” her mother Jessy said. Jayda’s father, Jesse, matched the amount, and her grandparents also bucked up with change. Jayda wound up with over $300 worth of food. Last year when her family was living in Surrey, she donated around $360 to the food bank. Jessy contributed to the total by donating proceeds from a garage sale. “She’s a very good kid. I’m very proud of her,” Jessy said, noting Jayda’s friends bring food bank donations instead of presents to birthday parties. “They would just bring clothes and food for me because I already have enough toys at home,” Jayda said. Despite her young age, Jayda understands the concept of starvation. She chooses to donate to the food bank because starving people are at risk of dying. “So I’m doing this to give people food,” Jayda said. Her donation was graciously received by Comox Valley Food Bank Society president Jeff Hampton, who says Jayda’s donation will help many people. “We’re going through a lot of people right now,” he said. Jayda might be the food bank’s youngest donor to date. “I’m finding more and more

No resolution in teachers’ dispute Record Staff

Comox Valley students were not in school Monday as teachers withdrew their services to meet in a study session with their union. The BC Teachers’ Federation had served 72-hour strike notice last week; as of Monday morning teachers were expected to be on picket lines Tuesday for a fullscale strike. The BCTF and BC Public School Employers’ Association bargained over the weekend, but as of Monday morning, an agreement had not yet been reached. The BCTF was expected to make an announcement Monday morning, after the Record’s deadline, regarding negotiations. Education Minister Peter Fassbender said Monday morning negotiations were expected to continue Monday. Comox Valley students will attend provincial exams as normal, as the Labour Relations Board ruled last week teacher essential services include supervision of Grade 10 to 12 provincial exams and submission of final grades for Grade 12. According to Comox Valley School District superintendent Sherry Elwood, graduation ceremonies for G.P. Vanier and Mark R. Isfeld schools will go ahead next week as scheduled. Parents and students are urged to visit www.sd71.bc.ca for updates, and the websites of their respective schools.

Seminar for parents of teens Join Marion Ledahl and Adrian Symonds for a one-hour immersion on how to live through the roller coaster ride of being a parent of teenagers. Marion is a 14-year long foster mother who is still smiling and laughing (and not hysterically). Teens really do connect with her. Adrian is a parent/teen mediator for the Ministry of Children and Family Development and has mediated hundreds of situations. Is your parental hair going grey early? Maybe these two can offer some suggestions for a more peaceful style of living together. Going viral about internet worries? Don’t worry, Marion and Adrian will assure you that by the time they finish the first day of high school, your kids will know more about access to every electronic device you ever

Continued from A1 “It’s the most incredible class I think I’ve ever been in,” says Puga. “Being able to use state-of-the-art equipment, it makes such a difference. When you hit print on a 3D model and it comes out like a real thing — it’s mind blowing. The first time I did it I was like, ‘Whoa, this is actually what I drew.’ It’s just crazy.” Meanwhile, student Mac Quinn, who is interested in mechanical engineering, decided to design and build his own 3D printer, using mostly ‘do-it-yourself products’ and doing some research online. “But, mostly I was working on my own ideas because I didn’t really want to copy something if it was for a final project,” says Quinn, who has been in Claassen’s classroom since Grade 8. “I found that (3D printers are) extremely useful … because you can design something with a CAD (computer-aided design) program, and then two, three hours later, you can actually see how it functions and works on a small scale, before you create the entire device.” The hands-on aspect of the engineering course is an important one for Quinn.

imagined than you ever will. Tired of hearing, “You’re the worst parent in the world.” Then followed by a loving smile and a, “Can I have $20 for a movie and popcorn?” Ahhh…and those testy drug issues, and those shoplifting issues, and those bullying issues, and those cutting issues, and those foul mouth issues, and those dirty bedroom issues, and those boundary issues, and those, “Mary’s mom lets her go and stay overnight,” issues and those “All I want is a little respect,” issues. What a fun hour of issue discussion! Parents of teens and teens of parents are welcome. It’s free. Learn about some great services in the Valley that you can access without cost. Learn about how to let go and love your kids. At the Courtenay Library 6:45 p.m., June 18.

Tech: Student designed his own 3D printer “It allows us to apply the actual sciences and the math, and it gives us a much better understanding of what we’re getting into,” he continues. “Of course, whenever you do something it takes three or four times as long as you think it will, but with this you can get a better idea of how to do it.” Caassen says many of the 26 students in the MEEP 12 cohort will go on to be engineers, and the entire class has very high grade point averages. “This is probably my best group ever,” he adds, noting part of the reason these students and their projects are so strong is due to the classroom tools they have available to them. “This is my pinnacle of five years of hard work and building up a room. Five years ago there was no laser engraver, there were no 3D printers, there weren’t 30 computers in here.” Some of the other student projects include a working jet engine, a plasma speaker, lights that go on and off when a bass drum is beat, a sluice box for gold mining, a recliner controlled by a phone and a compressed air T-shirt cannon. writer@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Photopia brings out the imaginative best in Comox Valley shutterbugs Special to The Record The larger-than-life face of the thoughtful little girl rolled onto the big screen, her eyes looking directly into five-year-old Isaac’s face. “Oh, wow!” he exclaimed loudly, amidst the crowd of mostly adults taking in the Photopia exhibition Saturday at the Courtenay Library. Gentle laughter went rolling around the darkened room, people touched by the sheer delight in the boy’s unfettered and outspoken enthusiasm, exuberance and delight. They were touched because that’s what art is supposed to about: provoking feeling, reaction. Carlo Henley’s affecting

photo, of his young daughter looking through a window frame, had pulled all of Isaac’s attention. The image was one of a series taken in farm buildings; another in them won Henley first place award in Photopia’s ‘Imagination’ category, which carried a $100 London Drugs gift card. A steadily rotating crowd came to watch the day-long deluge of photo art from local camera captures, hundreds of images parading across the high-quality screens. Six high-end units, 50, 55 and 60 inches in size, were supplied for the show by London Drugs and the Visual Sound Store. “While there were a few photos submitted in which the value was mostly recognized by the photog-

rapher, the show had so many good, and even jawdropping contributions,” said Jamie Bowman, who organized Photopia as part of the multi-event Elevate Arts Festival. “And those monitors we got were so detailed, so vivid, that they really allowed the photos to be alive. I was very impressed, and humbled, by the breadth and depth of photographic talent we have in this community.” Justin Guo’s timeexposed Skytrain at night brought him runner-up in the ‘Imagination’ category. Al Wozniak won both first place and runner-up for his superbly creative multi-layered images in the ‘Manipulated’ category. Ingrid Bollegraaf took first place in the ‘Other

Side’ category, her image suggesting an eye looking through soap suds. Crystal Norman’s highly amusing ‘Dance Date With the Normans’ won her runner-up status from the judges. Norman also won runner-up in the ‘Stepping Toward’ category for her picture ‘Harnessing Energy’. First place in Stepping Toward’ went to Kyle Grop for his Nanaimo Harbour night shot. Judging was handled by two respected Comox Valley professionals in the field, Gordon Ross of Gordon Ross Photography and Paul Bailey of the North Island College Commercial Photography Program. All the runners-up were awarded poster-size printings provided by Sure Copy, Woznia won $100 in gift certificates sponsored by Visual Sound Store, and Bollegraaf won a pass to the Comox Valley Art Gallery’s next TIFF film series. “While the technical value achieved by high-end DSLR lenses and hours of editing time was clearly evident, we also had some very good, eye-catching images taken on smart phones,” said Bowman. “Both are good for their own reasons. It’s the creativity that counts.”

CARLO HENLEY’S PHOTO of his daughter in a barn, surrounded by pumpkins, with the sun pushing through the window, won first place in the “Imagination” category. Al Wozniak (bottom left) won the “Manipulated” category and Ingrid Bollegraaf (upper left) won the Other Side category.

Commandeur twins are tearing up the track Earle Couper Record Staff

ADAM COMMANDEUR FOLLOWS UAA teammate Ethan Hewiitt en roue to second place in the 400m at the GNAC indoor championships. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Go north, young men. That was the plan for identical twins Adam and Scott Commandeur of Comox as they landed four-year NCAA track scholarships to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage. Donning the Seawolf green and gold, the brothers settled quickly into their new environs – quickly being the key word as both claimed Great Northwest Athletic Conference (11 universities from six states) championships in their freshman year, with Adam adding a school and conference record and All Region honours for good measure. After stellar high school careers at Highland Secondary School (they graduated in 2013) and much success at BC Summer Games and Canadian championships, the Commandeurs wanted to pursue their track careers at the same university. Their search soon focussed on NCAA Div. 2 UAA. “We already knew a bunch of people up there and the track program is pretty good so we decided to go up there,” explained Adam, who was on the UAA team that won the 4x400m title at the Feb. 21-22 GNAC indoor championships at Nampa, Idaho. time was three-and-a-half seconds faster than the runnersup and set the indoor record for UAA with the second-fastest time in GNAC history. Remarkably, it was the first time the team ran the event.

We already knew ❝ a bunch of people up

there and the track program is pretty good, so we decided to go up there.

❞ Adam Commandeur

“We knew we had four good strong runners (four of the eight 400m finalists – Elliott Bauer, Commandeur, Bobo Camara and Ethan Hewitt) and we could take the title home pretty easily,” Adam said. Adam also scooped a silver medal in the 400m. “We had another runner in our team (Hewitt) who has the 400m record for both indoor and outdoor. What I tried to basically do the whole race was pace right behind him and it worked out pretty good.” Hewitt won in 48:31 while Adam was right on his heels, finishing in 48:84. Outdoors, the 4x400m team set a school and GNAC record March 14 in a time of 3:13.70, then broke that on April 18

10

with a time of 3:12.22 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California. Adam earned All Region honours for both indoor and outdoor track for his 400m, the 4x400m and also the distance medley relay. The top five individuals in each event from the region earn All-Region distinction. Scott had to wait until May 9-10 to claim his GNAC title at the outdoor championships in Monmouth, Oregon. But it was definitely worth the wait as he won the 800m – without even realizing he’d done so. With the sixth fastest time in the event heading into the championships, Scott said he was feeling good going into prelims. “I knew I’d done a lot of really, really good training about three weeks prior to the race. I had some of the fastest guys in the conference with me. I set a personal best (finishing third in 1:53.29) and didn’t really feel that tired from it,” Scott said. “Going into the final I knew I had to be up with the front guys in order to maintain the pace with them. My coach told me before the race it was probably going to go out a little slower, then if the pace changes you have to notice it and go with it and stay with it. See BROTHERS, page 26

INFORMATION

Eric John Bigelow Eric John Bigelow, 26, of Vancouver, died June 6th, 2014 from cardiac arrest. He was born in Victoria, the son of Fred Bigelow and Sarah Savage. He graduated from Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School in 2006. Eric received his Bachelor of Commerce from the Sauder School of Business, UBC in 2011 and subsequently worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He received his Chartered Accountant designation in May. Aside from his many academic and professional accomplishments, he was driven to enjoy life, from the most remote wilderness locations to the heart of Vancouver and Manhattan, and all points in between. Above all, he had an uncommon ability to foster and maintain strong, loving friendships with an incredible number of people throughout his short but rich life. Eric is survived by his partner, Kyla Brophy of North Vancouver, his parents, his sister Stephanie and brother Alan, his maternal grandfather, Robert Savage, and his close friend Graeme Yamagishi, to say nothing of his large extended family and truly amazing number of friends. A Celebration of Eric’s Awesomeness will be held on Saturday, June 21st at 1pm at the Canadian Forces Base Comox Officers’ Mess. The family asks that you consider donations to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

McArthur (nee Willett) Helena Elizabeth

:PVS $PNNVOJUZ :PVS $MBTTJmFET

Helena passed away peacefully on June 6, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was born March 16, 1923 at Gaspe, Quebec. Predeceased by parents Vincent & Ethel, husband David, brother Murray and sister Joyce, she is survived by son Murray (Judith), daughters Joan (Dale) and Wendy (Keith), granddaughter Tabatha, grandsons Sam and Gabriel (Yuki), great-grandchildren Toshiro & Shino, brother-inlaw Jack, special friend Fran, and many nieces and nephews. Helena came west after WWII to join future husband David and start a life together. They came to Courtenay from Nanaimo in 1946. Mom was a stay-at-home Mom until the late ‘60’s when she started work at the Arbutus Hotel. Mom was a waitress for 20 years and had a devoted following of customers. During the kids’ younger years, Mom joined a group of ladies who became known as the “Sewing Club. They met weekly on Thursdays for years doing their mending and darning. As the kids grew up the Sewing Club changed venues and it evolved in the Poker Club. The ladies had a great time comparing hands playing penny-ante poker. She was famous for her baking and her Danish relish. The relish was a fall tradition and her shortbread was a Christmas favourite. The family wishes to thank all of Helena’s family and friends for their kind words and prayers, flowers and food and requests that donation be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or Comox Valley Hospice. Many thanks to all her caregivers at the Comox Valley Seniors Village, the 3rd Floor staff at St. Joseph’s and special thanks to Dr. Reggler and his staff for many years of excellent care. A tea will be held in the near future. Details to be determined.

CVRD says Grieve and Oakman removal from 3L discussions ‘a private decision’ No confirmation of alleged human rights issue Scott Stanfield Record Staff

Comox Valley Regional District chair Edwin Grieve and district CAO Deb Oakman have decided not to attend further meetings or participate in discussions related to 3L Development lands near Stotan Falls. The Nanaimo-based company has proposed to create a riverfront community near the popular swimming hole. “It’s a private decision, made in an abundance of caution,” a CVRD news release states. Oakman and Grieve were both absent from Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting where directors deferred a decision about an application from 3L to amend the Regional Growth Strategy. They returned for the remainder of the meeting where other items were listed in a separate agenda. Neither Oakman nor Grieve returned calls or emails to explain their decision to abstain from items related to 3L. Company spokesman Kabel Atwall could not expand on an alleged human rights reference to an individual associated with the company. He and 3L lawyers are bound by confidentiality. “I can’t say anything,” Atwall said. “It’s to be kept confidential and I’ve got to keep it

as such.” The Canadian Human Rights Commission could not comment if a complaint has been filed against the district. The CVRD board has previously rejected an offer from 3L to purchase the property, saying the proposal is not in synch with the RGS. The offer included Stotan Falls, Bull Island and parkland dedication. The company plans to develop lots for single-family and patio homes tailored for seniors. Total parcel size is 150 hectares. “The focus related to 3L should be on the

process around the developer’s proposal,” the news release states. “It is a fair process, being carried out in the public interest, and we will be following it through.” Atwall, however, feels the CVRD is not following its own process. For instance, he said it is incorrect to assume 3L will hand over parkland in exchange for a rezoning application. “I’m not going to give up the land with the most value,” he said. “If I have to give up parkland they’re going to get the stuff with the least value…If it gets cut up, it’s gone forever.”

BC Hydro’s new Buckley Bay substation project is taking shape with electric equipment and transformers. The substation, at about $28 million, will provide up to five new distribution circuits that will bring increased capacity and reliability to customers south of Courtenay, Denman/Hornby and the Buckley Bay area. Hydro customers in this area currently receive power from the Puntledge substation, about 25 kilometres away in Courtenay. The planned completion date is October.

V9N 2Z7 www.comoxvalleyrecord.com editor@comoxvalleyrecord.com The Comox Valley Record is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Counci Barring an 11th-hour settlement, British Columbia teachers will picketing along the streets in front of schools, rather thn teaching students in them this morning. Should Victoria decide not to cave in to the BCTF’s demands – which it cannot – and push come to shove, teachers could be out of their classrooms in the final weeks of the school year. That would simply be unconscionable, and unethical. Students across the province have already been negatively impacted by three weeks of rotating one-day teacher walkouts in every district. While the government has guaranteed final exam marking and grades, kids undergoing final lessons, year-end review, and in some cases, getting extra help in attaining the best marks possible in final unit tests and exams – top academics and learning challenged alike – have missed vital instructional time. This is certainly not “about the children,” as the BCTF insists. This is about a prolonged, self-serving spitting contest between the provincial government and one of the most militant unions in B.C. Staging a full-scale strike in the critical closing frames of a school year is nothing more than deliberately detrimental for tens of thousands of public school children and teens who have already paid a price in this unacceptable battle. There is nothing about jeopardizing the achievement and enjoyment of this year’s crop of students – especially the Grade 12 grads – that is justifiable in principle or practicality. When this battle finally ends, these kids will be the losers. And that is just wrong. Polls say this, polls say that, but the bottom line is that the people of this province are tired of the fight. Get it resolved, get our children back in the classes where they belong, and move on. About the children? Only in the same manner that a game of chess is about the pawns. – Black Press Record Question of the Week This week: So far, 6o per cent of respondents say that the ongoing battle between public school teachers and the government has made them re-think their child’s school options (i.e. independent schools). Vvisit www.comoxvalleyrecord. com and vote in the Poll. Vanier students are using cutting-edge technology to build a wide variety of things, with 3D print technology.

For the umpteenth time in the past few months, the teachers and the government combine to get TWO thumbs down.

Ontario election lessons for B.C. “L

iberal” is becoming one of the most ill-defined words in Canadian politics. Here in B.C., a POLITICS Liberal is a Conservative, or at least a fiscal conservative, bent on balancing OM budgets and battling LETCHER big unions to force them to recognize today’s world of low growth and low inflation. In Ottawa, a Liberal is currently whatever Justin Trudeau wakes up and decides. One day he’s a libertarian who wants to legalize marijuana, and the next he’s in touch with his inner Taliban, issuing a moral edict on abortion. In Ontario, Premier Kathleen Wynne saved her gut-shot Liberal government by limping to the left of the NDP, promising to spend lots more borrowed money and build lots of transit. This is in a have-not province with an operating deficit that is currently running north of $12 billion. For comparison purposes, B.C.’s deficit swelled briefly beyond $3 billion in the wake of the Great Recession of 2009, and the books stayed in the red until last year as the B.C. Liberals unwound the Harmonized Sales Tax and repaid a $1.6 billion HST transfer allowance to Ottawa. You think B.C.’s energy policy is a disaster? Check out Ontario,

F

T

where the cops are still investigating the $1 billion cancellation of plans to construct two natural gas-fired power plants before the 2011 election. The gas plants were to stabilize erratic output from wind and solar power, a Europeanstyle climate change gesture that involved Ontario ratepayers giving a huge subsidy to Korean tech giant Samsung. The Ontario Liberals clung to power in part by promising a provincial pension scheme on the same scale as the Canada Pension Plan. B.C. has a similar pension program in the works, to be offered to the two thirds of small business and self-employed people who don’t have a group plan with their employer. Ours would, of course, be voluntary. Not so in Ontario, where large and small businesses will be required to cough up half of the required pension payments. The Ontario model is dumb on several levels. It is to be imposed just as the baby boom retirement wave breaks across Canada’s most populous province, increasing risk that the pension pool may run dry. And it sticks small business with a new payroll tax in a province that has lost much of its traditional manufacturing base and needs to innovate. Here’s the funny part, if you

don’t live in Ontario. Wynne tabled her spending-spree, deficit-be-damned budget in an effort to convince the NDP to keep propping up the Liberal minority government and avoid an election. Instead, she won a majority and now has to implement her pie-in-the-sky promises. Ontario is bracing for a downgrade in its credit rating based on the election result, and is about to go into province-wide bargaining with public service unions who want their share from the Liberal money tree. Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak ran on a plan that sounded similar to the one presented by Christy Clark in 2013: hold the line on spending, balance the budget, reduce the size of government, stimulate job creation. Hudak was rejected for a second time, and resigned the leadership on election night. B.C. voters now have three years to see how the Ontario version of Liberal government plays out, compared to the B.C. Liberal version. For us, much depends on resource development, including forest products, natural gas and other trade with Asia. If all goes well here, B.C. can continue to send transfer payments to the fantasyland of Ontario.

firm the wireless meters pose no known health risks. BC Hydro’s meters have been independently tested and were shown to communicate for about

1.4 seconds per day at a signal strength less than 0.5 per cent of Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 – the official radio frequency exposure limit within Canada.

To put this into context, passengers taking the ferry between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay ferry terminals are exposed to the equivalent of 35 years’ worth of BC Hydro smart meter radio frequency in a single trip. More than 99 per cent of BC Hydro customers now have a new meter and are already seeing the benefits of the modern system. The new automated billing system is eliminating routinely

estimated bills and manual dataentry errors, ensuring customers are billed only for the power used in a billing period. And customers who have signed up for a secure MyHydro account can use the more-timely information about their electricity use to help identify new ways to conserve energy and save money. The shrinking of the Comox Glacier has been happening for eons; no reason to panic Dear editor, In answer to Mr. Ralph Shaw’s comments in the May 29, 2014 Record regarding the fact that the Comox Glacier is getting smaller, he is right as it has been getting smaller for a long, long time; 15,000 years in fact. Background – the war years of 1939-1945. My father, W.F. Murray, was a WW1 machine gunner. Because he was a Vet, he got a job weighing all the gravel for CFB Comox.

At that time we lived on Cumberland Road, at the corner of Cumberland Rd. and Arden Rd, below the gravel pit. One evening he came home from work and told me to go up to the gravel pit and get some ice. Because they were removing gravel 12 to 14 hours a day, they were moving faster than the heat. The block of ice was the size of a small compact car and was very hard and it was whitish blue. So I went by bike with a milk pail and a hatchet and

returned with a bucket of ice. So dear old Dad had Scotch on the rocks as there were no fridges in those days. The gravel on Cumberland Road is Terminal Moraine and the Comox Glacier has been retreating for approximately 15,000 years. See page 5 Glacier and Icebergs by Stephen E. Bruneau. The whole world is on a natural warming trend. To stop burning fossil fuel and look to alternate energy sources is foolish and expensive. What is the excuse going to

be when the cycle changes and the world turns to a cooling cycle? A mister R.T. also saw the ice and he is still living in the Val-

Nothing at all suspicious about firehall/training centre Dear editor, I write in response to Mr. Eriksson’s recent letter in which he is “suspicious” about Courtenay Council building a firefighter training centre and satellite firehall. At the outset, it is clear he has not read any of the independent analyses of Courtenay’s fire protection: they both recommended building both training centre and firehall at the already purchased site with

all due haste! His concern about the timing is simply odd: Courtenay bought the site in 2005, voted to proceed in 2012, conducted two independent reviews, and then recently voted again to proceed. Gee, over nine years on this issue is too fast? His comments on the Comox Training Facility are singularly ill informed. Again, both studies identi-

fied vital training that Comox simply can not provide. Furthermore, anyone walking by the site will see it clearly can not expand, being completely surrounded by a road, a school and private houses. In all, his comments show more of a willingness to play politics than an informed concern about fire protection in Courtenay. S. Stannard Comox Valley

Specifics regarding firehall expenses hard to come by Dear editor, I have had questions regarding the new firehall and training centre for some time and would like to echo Mr. Eriksson’s concerns. There is no doubt an additional response facility is required to serve the growing population and infrastructure in this area of the city, however there are few details provided with regard to how this will all come about. Separating the cost of building the firehall from the train-

ing centre would give us some indication of training costs, and information on what additional manpower and equipment will be required to create an effective emergency response capability has also not been provided. Perhaps our Fire Chief can enlighten us as to what specific qualifications required to attain the desired firefighter/ fire officer levels cannot be provided through the Comox centre and what the anticipated costs for sending those individuals to

the Justice Institute would be on an annual basis. Siting an ambulance and crew in the new facility would also seem to be a no-brainer. I am all for providing our firefighters with the best training and equipment they need to do their jobs effectively and safely but without a proper business case, we should not be comfortable with this proposal as it has been presented thus far.

“That’s what I did with about 250m left. Coming into the final 100m I was battling with (prelim winner Cameron Porceviat) from Simon Fraser University. We were sprinting to the end and I got him by .08 seconds. I didn’t even know I’d won till I looked up at the scoreboard (and saw the time),” said Scott, who set another PB with a time of 1:52.97. Home for the summer, both young men are training and attending meets as they prepare for the Canadian Junior championships July 4-6 at Sainte-Therese, Que. The UAA campus is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by lakes, ponds and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail system. With that backdrop, it’s easy to see why the Commandeurs enjoyed their first year in Anchorage, where Adam is studying physical education and Scott is undeclared but leaning toward hospitality and restaurant management. They are looking forward to next year, and Scott notes the school is building a new sports complex that will open in August, just in time for the start of their new season.

Black Press owner receives honorary Doctor of Laws degree Don Descoteau Black Press

If there’s one thing David Black embodies, it’s organization. The owner of Black Press – which publishes 16 Vancouver Island community newspapers and dozens more around B.C. and North America – wasn’t about to offer some off-thecuff remarks to graduates and officials gathered for last week’s convocation ceremony at the University of Victoria. In accepting an honorary doctoraate, the modest newspaperman read from a prepared speech, despite

the fact he’s only got five minutes to offer his pearls of wisdom. As he does with any project he’s embarked upon over the years, he takes it very seriously. “It’s pretty special to be honoured from a university like this,” he said of his honorary Doctor of Laws degree. “They’ve had a lot of growth since I’ve been in Victoria.” While he admitted to being a “little bit embarrassed” to receive the honour, he feels pride at being a part of the growth at UVic. Having based his growing newspaper group in Greater Victoria in the late

The Black Press scholarship program, which awards $5,000 to one student in each of B.C.’s 37 school districts for enrolment into UVic’s Peter B. Gustavson School of Business (so named in 2010), was an effort to develop young entrepreneurs throughout B.C. as a way to strengthen the province’s economy. “I’ve met a lot of these kids over the years. They’re terrific,” he says of the scholarship winners. To read David Black’s convocation speech, go to bit.ly/1y90cxO

business in the mid-2000s. “I was lucky enough to be involved from the very beginning,” he said, adding that many good ideas were tossed around in the initial stages of the program’s development. Such aspects as mentorship, student entrepreneurship and international exposure to outside industry were brought forward as the educational strategy for the school was taking shape. “Those are still keys to the program and have been since the beginning,” he said. “It’s been fun watching (the business program), mostly from a distance.”
