Conservation delays water source search

No movement in teacher talks By Karl yu ThE NEwS BULLETiN

Despite bargaining throughout the weekend, a deal had yet to be announced Monday morning to avert a full-scale strike from teachers in B.C. this week. Nanaimo teachers participated in a study session Monday and held rallies throughout Nanaimo school district. Schools were expected to be behind picket lines today (June 17). Negotiations were ongoing as of press time Monday. B.C. teachers’ union members gave a clear mandate for the strike with 86 per cent voting in favour of job action escalation last week. Mike Ball, Nanaimo union local president, said the union has made concessions in its latest proposal, with what he calls “significant reductions.” “The proposal that we’ll put in front of government will be one that should make them think twice rather than just saying, ‘No,’” Ball said. “So we’re hopeful that they’ll look at it seriously this time instead of their usual ‘No’ and we’ll actually bargain and try to come to a deal to avoid any further escalation.” In a letter addressed to parents, John Blain, Nanaimo school district deputy superintendent, is asking parents to keep their children home Monday and Tuesday, as buses won’t be running and teachers will not be working. There won’t be adequate supervision, he said. See ‘STUDENTS’ /4

CouNCIl AdoPTS strategy to save money by putting off efforts to tap into additional supply. By Tamara Cunningham ThE NEwS BULLETiN

Nineteen teams from businesses and organizations raised nearly $50,000 for a chance to ride the bike downtown Thursday and at Woodgrove Centre on Friday.

Water conservation measures are a sound investment, according to Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan, who says efforts will delay the multimillion dollar cost of tapping into additional supply. Nanaimo city council recently adopted a new Water Conservation Strategy aimed at cutting back consumption rates by 10 per cent each decade. The $16,000 plan reveals 11 ways to help reach the target, from an expanded toilet rebate program to an education campaign and more detailed water bills. There are also measures like a watershed forecasting model, new bulk water metering replacement plan and leak detection surveys – estimated to total $465,000 over the next three years. Another $10,000 would be spent on an audit in 2019. Ruttan said the investment “pales in comparison” with what it’s going to cost to increase the city’s water supply, and the conservation costs could help delay the multimillion-dollar expense for another three to five years. The city has been facing a need to bolster its water supply since 2011 when a staff report estimated that demand would exceed supply by 2020. That immediacy has since been pushed back to 2024. “The longer we can hold off on doing that the better we all are as a community and the way we can hold off on that is to try to encourage taxpayers and residents of Nanaimo to demonstrate conservation as effectively as they can,” Ruttan said. The suspect is described as Caucasian, 20-25 years old, skinny with short hair. He was wearing baggy low jeans and a white or grey T-shirt. His vehicle is an older white Honda Civic or Toyota, with a dark pinstripe on the door. Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.

firSt rESult from review to improve city hall governance. By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

A new document doesn’t just spell out roles and responsibility of city politicians – it’s a declaration, says Coun. Ted Greves. “They do this in school, you know for bad kids, make them sign a contract to make them behave and this is what we are doing here,” he said. In a 5-3 vote Monday, Nanaimo city council adopted a document that lays out the conduct and responsibilities of civic politicians. It also allows for a signed declaration for mayor and council to commit to the new guidelines. According to Greves, chairman of the governance steering committee, this is the first result of a $75,000 governance review that recommended ways to improve governance at city hall. While this week’s document contains nothing new, supporters said it clearly outlines responsibilities, roles and even how politicians should conduct themselves in meetings.

Coun. Diana Johnstone called it great and believes the guiding principles are ones every councillor should follow. Coun. Diane Brennan said council has heard people are fed up with listening to councillors “bicker and snarl at one another and snarl at people that come to the podium” and want them to act in an adult manner, adding, “so I don’t see anything wrong with this. “Nobody has to sign this. Once you are elected you don’t have to sign it, but you will have to face the public and tell them you refused to sign a document that sets out rules of behaviour in a body like this where things can get quite heated,” she said. Coun. Bill Bestwick, however, called it a re-acclamation of their vows. Council has the B.C. Community Charter, Robert’s Rules of Order and the mayor to steer them in the right direction, “so from my perspective we have everything we need,” he said. “I don’t need to sign another oath of office that is a policy.” Bestwick and councillors Jim Kipp and Bill McKay voted against adopting the document.

Students will write exams ALMANAC From /1

The B.C. Labour Relations Board ruled that final marks for Grade 12 students must be submitted by June 20 and exams for grades 10 to 12 must go ahead. There will be a special entrance at each school in order not to interfere with picket lines and Ball said teachers will not attempt to block any students taking exams. Graduation ceremonies will take place between June 25-26 at the Port Theatre. Stephanie Higginson, a stay-at-home mother and former teacher, whose son is a Grade 1 student at Woodbank Primary School, said the work stoppage is necessary. Greg Millbank will be able to look after his grandson Alex Martin, a student at Ecole Oceane, during the strike but said it isn’t a good situation. “It’s horribly unfortunate and it’s too bad it came down to this,” he said. Blain said updates will be provided via the school district website, www.sd68.bc.ca, Facebook page and Twitter account, @sd68bc.

Hosts needed for Games accommodation

I

oNly 30 days remain before event begins. by Chris bush The News BulleTiN

If you like shift work, local B.C. Summer Games organizers have a job for you. As of today (June 17) there are only 30 days left before the start of the Games in Nanaimo July 17-20. The B.C. Games A-team, the team of volunteers setting up accommodations for more than 3,000 athletes and their coaches in 19 Nanaimo schools, needs volunteers to work as dorm hosts, site preparation workers and dorm captains. Dorm hosts man dorm desks, making sure athletes sign in and out of the dorms and pass along information to athletes and coaches as needed. Dorm captains are the dorm hosts team

leaders. They oversee dorm host operations and make sure shifts are filled. Site preparation volunteers put up signs and set up desks at dorm sites and dis-

tribute and collect sleeping mats before and after the games. P a m D o n n e l l y, accommodations director, said she currently has 60 volunteers, but needs

at least 200 more for the Games. At least 30 more site prep volunteers are needed. “We need people signing up now – and they’re out there,” Donnelly said. “They just have to get the information and envision themselves being there.” Here’s the urgency: every dorm volunteer must be more than 18 years of age and have a criminal record background check completed, which – even though they’ve been fast tracked for the Games – still take two weeks to complete. “We definitely have a need and we’ve only got two weeks to get signed up because we’re within four weeks of the Games,” said Jenn Houtby, games director of promotions. Dorm host shifts are about six hours long and tasks aren’t too demanding since all they have to do is check people in and

out of the dorms. The main aspect of the job, aside from signing people in and out, is making them feel at home. Since the job isn’t physically demanding it’s a good position for seniors or people who might have mobility problems. The shifts run ‘round the clock, so even shift workers or people who would prefer a graveyard shift over daytime hours can pretty much pick their favourite time of day to volunteer. The criminal record checks are done free of charge for Games volunteers. To register as volunteer for the B.C. Summer Games, please call 778-441-2014, visit www.bcgames.org or stop by the Games office, at 1111 Dufferin Cres. Volunteer registration forms can also be picked up at any City of Nanaimo recreation facility. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo private school attracts Island interest by renee Andor Black Press

An independent school near Nanaimo has recently been receiving more calls from Comox Valley parents interested in independent schooling for their children. According to Aspengrove School’s assistant head David Hutchinson, the number of queries the school has received of late prompted staff to consider implementing bus service from the Comox Valley to the Lantzville school. “It’s essentially because we started to receive phone calls from families just wondering if we offer bus service because they would like to consider an independent school for their families,” said Hutchinson,

noting he had about six calls over a few weeks, which is significant as the school is located out of town. “For that many people to reach out and see if there’s a way to make it work suggests there’s a definite demand.” If about five families choose to send their children to Aspengrove and would like bus service, Hutchinson said it would be feasible to start it up in September. The service would likely pick students up from a central area in the Comox Valley and drop them off at the same spot, he added. “I think everybody has their own personal reasons for looking for different options in education and it really is a wide range with families.” editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Child care pitched for city parks

A Nanaimo child-care provider is looking to expand services into city parks. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island is making a pitch to the City of Nanaimo to have purpose-built child-care facilities in

public spaces like Beban Park. According to Ian Kalina, executive director of the boys and girls club, the on-site care service would see city recreational sites utilized, while helping to increase child-care spaces and

enrich programs. At Beban Park, for example, the club could offer activities at the pool, forest trails and BMX track. Discussions will happen during the Beban Park Master Plan process, said the city.

From /1

According to Bill S i m s , t h e c i t y ’s manager of water resources, the conservation strategy reached its 2008 target of reducing use by 15 per cent per capita within two years. Now, the city aims to see consumption rates drop 10 per cent each decade. While the number was exceeded between 2002-12, the city only saw a twoper cent reduction each decade since 1984. The 2014 Water Conservation Strategy says an increased investment and a commitment from the municipality and its partner is needed if it plans to dramatically reduce water use across Nanaimo. One priority measure the city plans to roll out is an expanded toilet rebate program, which will extend to multi-family residences for a $100,000 annual cost. The initiative saved approximately 578 million litres of water since 2009 and saw 4,126 appliances swapped out.

VIU aqUaCUlTUrE program supplies commercial farms. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

There is a potential for a sturgeon market in B.C., according to the director of Vancouver Island University’s International Centre for Sturgeon Studies. The fish is valued for its meat and eggs, which are used for caviar, and according to director Don Tillapaugh, there is demand but not enough production. “We believe the market’s very strong for sturgeon,” said Tillapaugh. “The price is high currently, it’s just at the beginnings of market development, so the price would normally be high when it’s a unique product, but like the development of any new industry, the prices start high

and then they come down as production quantities grow.” Tillapaugh said the university has accumulated about eight breeding fish over the past 25 years and has learned how to spawn them and rear babies. In the past, the centre has sold babies to the Sunshine Coast’s Target Marine Hatcheries, which Tillapaugh said has developed a viable sturgeon aquaculture business. The hatchery sells meat to high-end restaurants and produces award-winning caviar. More recently, the university has provided the baby fish to local company Taste of B.C. Aquafarms, which is also growing sturgeon and there are other companies considering getting into sturgeon aquaculture, according to Tillapaugh. “Our role, we think, is to be the source of the baby fish for other farmers to grow to food production and maybe for caviar as well,” said Tilla-

paugh. “We’re just, I call it, a hatchery for sturgeon.” Sturgeon are considered a species at risk in B.C., with the exception of the lower Fraser River population, and in Tillpaugh’s opinion, farming fish is the way to go given that the wild fish industry is at its maximum sustainable limit. “Food and agricultural organizations have shown in many studies that we can’t harvest any more out of the ocean, but our population in the world is growing, so we need to produce more protein by aquaculture in order to feed the world, so how are we going to to do that is the question. “Sturgeon, because of its meat qualities and there is a market demand for it, and we’re figuring out that you can grow it in aquaculture conditions fairly successfully, so we think it’s a huge opportunity for B.C. to grow a sturgeon industry,” he said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Give to charity, but do so wisely Every weekend it seems there is some sort of walk, run, bicycle ride, or obstacle course event to raise money for worthy causes like cancer research, sending kids to summer camp or diabetes. The list goes on. Often participants have to raise a certain amount of pledges to enter the event. They spend countless hours soliciting family and friends to help out, organize their own fundraisers such as pub crawls, garage sales, car washes, and hotdog sales. It’s a symbiotic relationship that seems to leave everyone smiling, and satisfied that they’ve done some good and had a little fun along the way. But is it worth it? Since 2009 MoneySense magazine has graded the performance of Canada’s 100 biggest charities to determine whether money raised to support their causes actually reaches its intended benefactor. Last year those charities raised $4.5 billion. Of that, $3.4 billion went to programs the charities supported. The rest, presumably, was the cost of doing business – paying salaries, promotion, and staging events. Many performed admirably. Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart charities, for instance, funnelled 88 per cent of its spending to programs that support children’s participation in minor sports. The Terry Fox Foundation ploughed 82.4 per cent of its money into cancer programs. Others didn’t fare as well, spending half or more of donated money just to raise those funds. (A useful website to visit for more information is www.charity intelligence.ca.) It’s been proven time and time again that Nanaimoites are a generous bunch. Some of us are fortunate enough to have it pretty good. We may be in a position to pay it forward, but still, it pays to enquire where exactly our money is going. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

since then. Do we really need to collect repetitive feedback? Nobody’s asking for a paved seawall around the beaver pond, or a covered lacrosse box on the wetlands there. All users want are trails. Gail Adrienne, executive director of Nanaimo and Area Land Trust, has been happy with the city’s treatment of the initial Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park, and would favour the same sort of work on the new park trails. “They may need a little bit of enhancing,” she said. “Maybe you add to them or widen them or put boardwalks if you need, signage to remind people that there is sensitive ecosystem.” Joanne Jonas-McRae of Save Linley Valley West said nothing at all needs to be done at the park, and that’s the general philosophy of users, the mayor and parks and rec. “I don’t think there’s a burning desire to do anything major to it,” said Harding. “It’s more what it is, is the value, rather than what it can become.” Linley Valley Cottle Lake Park doesn’t need to be an iconic park or a Central Park, as some have suggested. In a lot of ways, it’s lovely the way it is. But it shouldn’t be secret. Let’s make sure people can access this park and explore it. And that way, when a tree doesn’t fall in Linley Valley, someone will be around to hear it, and appreciate it. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Dammed water a drop in a bucket in flood To the Editor,

Re: Colliery dam risk lowered, May 29. In 2012 city council was told that the Colliery dams were in such poor condition that there was a 40 per cent chance in 50 years that they would fail in a manner that would cause swaths of destruction in lower Harewood. Thanks to the most intensive analysis that may ever have occurred on a dam in B.C. we know that this is not the case. At most, an earthquake could cause cracking and they could leak. We are now left with dealing with a hypothetical flood event. Despite studies showing that the

spillways are undersized, our dams have successfully managed storms over the last century. For much of the year we have about 2.5 centimetres of water or less in the spillway and very rarely have more than 0.3 metres. An enormous flood event that could impact the dams would occur over many hours or days. Should an event like this occur, there would be large-scale flooding in most of Nanaimo with a great deal of damage. This is unrelated to our dams. Our two lakes are very small and even if they were to lose their water, it would not be instantaneous and

would have little overall impact. As for the signage, our society has asked repeatedly for them to be removed. We consider them to be a blight in our community with no actual benefit.

Jeff Solomon Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society

To the Editor,

Re: Extreme weather will stress our dams, Letters, June 12. In the two extreme rain and snow events the letter writer mentions, none of this fear-mongering erosion has happened. No cracks found, either.

But speaking of cracks in concrete, they are very dangerous. I’m speaking as a man that has done a lot of commercial concrete form work, pouring concrete and seeing the results. A cracked wall or floor will not pass, usually caused by stripping the forms too soon on green concrete. Nanaimo now has this problem at the new reservoir at Colliery Dam Park. Yes, leave the flood signage in place, because if we get the big one I’ll be betting the new reservoir will fail long before the old dams.

Re: Parkland bought without public process, May 20. As a recent home buyer who was house shopping in Nanaimo, I discovered that homes and land are always priced well above their assessed value. The reality is that the homes that

would have been constructed here most likely would have cost an average of $300-500,000. I don’t know how many homes you can build on 91 hectares of land, but I’m sure the developers could have made a ton more than $8 million had they refused to sell it.

I say ‘good score’ city council. The more councillors make good decisions like this that seem to be influenced by the values of green space, the more confident I am when they do not inform me of every decision made.

Governance review wastes money To the Editor,

Yet again, the astute minds at city hall have found new and innovative ways to spend our tax dollars with disregard to both common sense and fiscal responsibility. When a majority of city council passed the governance review this month, they only duplicated what is already stated in the community charter. There is absolutely nothing new in this review. It is a regurgitation of what has already been

spelled out before and to have spent thousands of dollars on a report to explain council’s roles and responsibilities and how to behave in public (we teach this to our young children) just goes from the sublime to the ridiculous. We ask our elected officials to spend our tax dollars wisely and with common sense and with the passing of this review, they have failed miserably.

Taxpayers shouldn’t foot the bill for a community boathouse, says letter writer.

Boathouse is a boondoggle To the Editor,

Re: Boathouse what community wants, Letters, May 22. Despite the time where there is supposed to be a lot of economic restraint, plus more than that, just the usual common sense, there comes from out of the dark shadows into the light with a lot of great expectations from those who want to hustle, their special dream project with the ever-toofamiliar sales pitch that it will be for the greater economic benefit to the community. They are trying to sell us a lot of hogwash. These

organizations still do not comprehend the reality that it will be yet again the taxpayers of Nanaimo who will ultimately get stuck with paying for yet another financial boondoggle of a money pit, just so they can get a much bigger slice of the taxpayers of Nanaimo’s humble pie, until finally it’s all gone; then what? I would suggest to the Nanaimo Boathouse Society and others, just build and manage your special dream projects because we just do not have the money to spend.

hevy Stevens was in her early 30s when she decided to take a chance on something new. “There was no other time to take that kind of chance in my life,” Stevens said. At the time, Stevens was a real estate agent in Nanaimo, but had grown tired of her career and decided to become a writer. “I wasn’t happy doing what I was doing so there is no loss,” Stevens said. It wasn’t long after leaving the real estate game that Stevens released her first novel, Still Missing. The novel would go on to become a New York Times bestseller. “Sometimes it didn’t almost feel real,” Stevens said about making the bestseller list. “My publisher [St. Martin’s Press] flew me to New York and you dream about something like that for so long and then it when it actually happens it is kind of surreal.” Stevens, who has also released two other books, Always Watching and Never Knowing, will release her newest book, That Night today (June 17). “It’s the story about

The idea to write That Night began when Stevens was inspired by an episode of NBC’s Dateline, where they featured a story on an American inmate in Montana who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend’s sister in 1979, despite evidence that pointed towards a group of jealous girls as being the killers. “This is the only

book I’ve ever written that had the spark from a real situation,” Stevens said. “I just remember watching it. I never watched it again or revisited the case or anything because I never want to take too much from someone else’s story. It was more just this idea that these other girls had killed this girl.” While writing That Night, Stevens spent countless hours watching various crime shows and researching other

for awhile,” Stevens said. “I was getting worried that I wouldn’t find any sources. I couldn’t move forward until I talked to people sometimes. So I had to work on different pieces.” Stevens added that it was tricky to incorporate Canadian laws in a book which is being published in the United States. That Night is Stevens’s first book that includes a true romance between two characters. “I really loved their [Ryan and Toni] love connection and it was the first book I had done where I was able to do a real romance and I liked that,” Stevens said. “I was also pregnant when I was writing this book so it was a really good stage in my life. I was really happy and I had lots of feel-good hormones and lots of energy.” Stevens is currently working on her next book. “It will come out in 2015. I don’t reveal the title or anything. What I can tell you is it is about three sisters who escape one nightmare and basically land up in a bigger one,” Stevens explained. Chevy Stevens will be at Chapters at the Woodgrove Centre on 6670 Mary Ellen Dr. on Saturday at 2 p.m. For more information and to purchase That Night, please visit www.chevystevens. com.

Longtime friends and musicians Gary Fjellgaard and Valdy are back touring together again.

Centre on Aging

“It’s always exciting when I get to work with my good friend Valdy,” Fjellgaard said. On Sunday (June 22) Fjellgaard, a Juno Award winner, and Valdy will be performing at St. Andrew’s Church. The performance is a fundraiser to help restore the church’s 100-year-old pipe organ.

“I always enjoy playing at St. Andrew’s Church in Nanaimo because the acoustics are superb,” he said. “The better sound, the better the show.” Following the Nanaimo performance, Fjellgaard and Valdy will conclude their tour with stops in Ontario and Nova Scotia.

Couch potatoes are now being grouped with cigarette smokers as taking their lives into their own hands (Rowe and Kahn, 1998). feedback: Sarah, a Coach, found out that inspiration and support can work both ways on the physical activity journey. She said, “when I decided to become an Active Choices Coach, I thought I’d be spending my time motivating someone else to get more active. Although Fjellgaard began his music career a little later than other musicians, he always had an interest in becoming a singer. “I was a little kid on the farm and it was all hard work, we were still farming with horses. I just couldn’t see myself picking rocks and roots and cleaning barns for the rest of my life,” Fjellgaard recalled. “I moved out to the coast and worked as a logger for many years before I got into music.” Since 1976, Fjellgaard, a native of Saskatchewan, has released over 15 albums. His most recent album, The Collection: Solo Acoustic, was released in 2011 and recorded at St. Andrew’s Church in Nanaimo. “I recorded it live, just sitting on the stool with the natural ambiance of the room,” Fjellgaard said. “A lot of songs I’d done before with different arrangements, but this one was just me and the guitar.” In 2005, Fjellgaard was inducted into the Canadian Countr y Music Hall of Fame. His induction speech was read by Valdy. “That was pretty exciting,” Fjellgaard recalled. “I can’t say enough about it.” Gary Fjellgaard and Valdy perform at St. Andrew’s Church, 311 Fritzwilliam St. at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 250-7531924. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Celebrating 48 years of adventure at Camp Qwanoes Since 1966 Camp Qwanoes has been inviting kids from a wide variety of backgrounds to leave the everyday behind, jump into adventure, and let friendship fill each day! “Camp is a place where kids can try things that just don’t happen in everyday life, says Scott Bayley, Executive Director. “And it’s all in a safe place. At Qwanoes kids can be kids, kids are valued and accepted, and

fun is a big part of each day. “Like racing a friend through the trees on parallel double zip lines! Or bouncing your friend high into the air off the blob. Or maybe just enjoying the stars at night with your cabin down at the dock. Kids experience these kind of adventures and a whole lot more at Qwanoes, nestled beside Maple Mountain on a quiet bay in Crofton in

the heart of the Gulf Island. “We started 48 years ago with a few hundred kids. Now this summer we expect over 3,500... from all across Vancouver Island, Greater Vancouver, and even beyond. “Our staff come from all over. This summer we’ll welcome staff from about 12 countries, 6 continents, and many provinces across Canada.

Apparently Qwanoes has grown for 25 summers and campers return year after year. “We love kids, shared Scott. “And our desire is to provide one unforgettable week. Our staff make such a difference – our campers love them! Qwanoes always seems to find ways to add new adventures and make each week extra special. Bayley explains that “last year we added the ‘Sky Station’ to

our challenge course... we’re taking linked elements to a whole new level. Kids loved it!. This summer we’re taking it even higher with a new Level Three! A few summers ago we added a concrete skate park. Things like a floating super-slide, wakeboarding, rock wall climbing, a high ropes course, mountain boarding...we have about 75 activities in all. “I know that our staff

team of almost 200 trained staff each week can’t wait to welcome our campers this summer! Qwanoes is a Christian camp, and an ideal place for fun-filled, lifechanging adventure. All are welcome and there still is some space available for this summer. Check out their summer 2014 video at www. qwanoes.ca/summer/ media. (For more info: www.qwanoes.ca)

Summer Fun Summer Fun Summer Fun

Creative Technology’s new home at École Océane Digital Literacy has become an important component to education. Employers are increasingly expecting new hires to have the skills required to work with 21st Century communication tools like video and the web. As schools struggle to keep up with these changes, many families have decided to look beyond the school classroom for opportunities to learn these skills. Byte Camp has been leading the way in providing these opportunities for kids to learn tech skills locally since 2003. Based on Vancouver Island, this ambitious non-profit has grown to be the busiest provider of Creative Tech classes Kids in Western Canada, with over 2500 students a year taking camps in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and here in Nanaimo. Byte Camp has this year teamed up with École Océane to provide a new home base for its popular Creative Technology Summer Camps in Nanaimo. “We are excited to have the

space to offer more seats and programs than ever before” explains founder Dave Hladik. “This summer we will be able to offer a camp every week of summer at École Océane teaching kids how to Animate, or make their own Video Games and Music Videos”. Hladik attributes the organizations longevity and success to “providing well-designed courses that challenge students. We have an extremely low student to staff ratio of 5:1, and highly skilled instructors. We make sure that the students are having fun and being productive. With lots of fresh-air

and exercise breaks in the day, we keep their minds fresh and ready to be challenged. We know that kids will be on their computers a lot this summer. Our goal is to motivate as many of them as we can to make that time as productive and creative as possible.” For more information about Byte Camp’s programs you can contact Dave Hladik directly at dave@bytecamp.ca, 1-888808-BYTE or have a look at their website, www.bytecamp.ca. “Byte Camp’s goal is to motivate kids to make their computer-time as productive and creative as possible”

Summer Fun Summer Fun Summer Fun Safety will make you a happy camper Ah, nature. Besides the mosquitoes, nothing says summer like a getaway to the great outdoors. As you wind down from the stress of packing up and driving to the cottage or campsite, the CSA Group, a leader in testing and certification, wants to remind you to stay safe on land and water this summer with these tips. Boats and Cottages * Always wear a personal flotation device and never consume alcohol while operating any vehicle. * Make sure that certified carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke alarms are properly installed outside all sleeping areas. * When opening your cottage for the season, carefully inspect all appliances and electrical cords

My circuit breaker keeps tripping, what does this mean?

BEN MAZZEI

(across from Rock City School)

Normally one of two things: 1) Breaker fatigue, internal weakening of the circuit breaker causing it to trip before maximum load, or the breaker is doing what it was designed to do, interrupt the flow of current before it reaches a dangerous level. A 15 amp circuit is designed to allow a maximum continuous load of 1440 watts. 2) You may also have a short circuit. If the breaker trips immediately or if a flash or sparks are visible at the panel when you attempt to reset the breaker then this is the case. If you are having breaker issues, contact Mazzei Electric and we can diagnose your problem

What can I do to keep my eyes healthy?

The eyes are very dependent on your general health, so as much as possible DR. PAUL GENEAU maintain good blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Nutrition is very important too. A diet rich in vegetables and fruits benefits the eyes, it may also be prudent to take an anti-oxidant supplement. Protect your eyes from ultra-violet damage from the sun by wearing protective sunglasses. Also wear eye protection appropriate to your sports, and even gardening and other work around the house. Weed-whackers are notorious for causing eye injuries. Have regular, routine eye examinations, to detect disease early and treat it more effectively. Life is worth seeing....take care of your eyes!

■ Trustee in Bankruptcy

www.mazzeielectric.com

I have approximately $20,000 in income tax debt plus another $5,000 in credit card debt. I have had no income over the last few GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP years due to health problems. Can I make a lump sum offer to CRA with help from a family member? What are my options?

CRA does not normally compromise on its debt through a lump sum payment unless it is offered through a consumer proposal filed with a Trustee. The proposal would include all your unsecured debts and CRA would have the majority and deciding vote since you require 51% of creditors voting in favour of it by dollar value. CRA would also likely want at least 50% of the debt paid. Alternately, you could chose to file for bankruptcy which would take 9 months to complete assuming you have no income and this is your first bankruptcy. If you expect to continue to have no income or realizable assets, then you may opt to do nothing for the time being until you possibly gain some income that could be subject to garnishee by CRA. At that time, you could look at a proposal or bankruptcy to get creditor protection and clear up the debt.

advertising How can I make sure advertising will work for my company? Message: The essential first step in advertising is to figure out what message to send to your customers. Advertising is simply a way to send a message based on your marketing plan and sound business strategy. Repetition: An advertising campaign is a planned appeal to the client’s potential customers, using the power of repetition. The power of repetition reinforces the advertisers message. Consistency equates with familiarity, familiarity equates with confidence and confidence equates with sales.

naturopathic I’m confused that hCG can be bought in a store, online or given as a prescription. What’s the difference?

DR. KAREN L. FRASER

The hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) hormone is being talked about a lot within the weight loss circles. It is not a new hormone or a new concept, but it appears that many different people are interested in trying it or selling it. The retail products are either homeopathic or advertised as containing a “frequency” of the hormone (which I am not sure what they mean by that as they also said it was not homeopathic). The original work with hCG and weight loss was done using the real hCG which is a restricted product in Canada, and it is only available by prescription. There are 2 options for taking the active hCG hormone: sublingual (made by a compounding pharmacist) or injectable. As with any prescription, there are some contraindications and precautions that should be noted. Supervision of the program is recommended. Naturopathic consults are covered by most extended health care plans.

What are the new changes that came into effect this year by the Supreme Court concerning probate in BC? TIAH M. WORKMAN There is new estate-planning legislation in BC called the Wills, Estates and Succession Act (“WESA”) which came into effect March 31, 2014, and replaced most of our existing estate-planning legislation and also our legislation dealing with probate. There are far too many changes to cover off in a short column, so I will try to address one each month for the next while. Section 155(1) of WESA replaces and broadens section 12 of the Wills Variation Act. It states that distribution of the estate is prohibited within 210 days of the grant of probate without consent of all beneficiaries and intestate successors entitled to the estate.

I often hear the following statements from smokers when they call to inquire: They will say, “I’m sick RON E. THOMPSON of the smell, the cost, and the hassle. “ “I find I’m out of breath at the top of the stairs.” “I’m going outside every day just to grab a smoke by a dumpster, gross!” “My doctor again reminded me how bad smoking is for my health.” Whatever your reason, quitting smoking is your decision and if you’re ready, hypnosis can help! You’ve tried the patch, gum, pills, cold turkey, lasers, electronic cigarettes, and like many others you’ve tried it all and failed. Because the habit is more of a mental one which your mind has taken on as an automatic behaviour until it becomes a reality for you every day. By using hypnosis we can address the habit in the sub-conscious mind by reprogramming your mind to now enjoy being a Non-Smoker. Thousands of people everywhere have used hypnosis to quit smoking successfully and so can you. It’s safe, natural, and proven to work. So if you’re ready, call us for a free consultation or to set an up an appointment.

Multicultural society helps newcomers to Canada By Karl yu

The News bulleTiN

The Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society is celebrating its 35th

anniversary and it has come a long way in that time. According to Hilde Schlosar, society executive director, it was formed in 1979

to deal with an influx of Vietnamese refugees due to the Vietnam War. The scope has broadened since then to include such groups as immigrants,

new citizens and more recently, temporary foreign workers. There have been stories of people taking advantage of the foreign workers,

something said Schlosar said the society hears about often. “Especially the last five or six years with the large number coming for low-

skilled jobs, we have heard about labour standard abuses and in fact, we’ve recently had a case you might’ve seen on [the news] about what was actually a human trafficking case,” she said. She said the society is now able to assist with recent funding from the provincial government. It is able to help the workers navigate systems and understand Canadian customs and way of life. “They’re shopping, they’re doing business, they’re banking, they’re participating in many different

As with other health issues, it is important to identify hearing loss early. Hearing loss tends to occur gradually and many people don’t realize a problem is developing. It is often apparent to others before obvious to the individual. Early diagnosis of hearing loss means more effective treatment, reduced risk of auditory deprivation and better communication ability. A hearing test is painless and quick. It should be an annual part of ongoing health care such as dental check-ups and other routine evaluations. Make a complimentary appointment today at Connect Hearing with a qualified Hearing Care Professional for a hearing test.

I seem to have chronic soreness from my lower denture. Adjustments do not seem to solve this.

TED CARSON

Over time, your lower ridge can become receded and flat. This is known as atrophy. You may notice your denture becoming increasingly loose and uncomfortable. This problem can usually be solved by having a soft liner, made of medical grade polymer, built into your denture. Being more porous, the soft liner adheres better to whatever remains of your gum, gives your denture more stability and is less of an irritant to your mucous membranes. The cushion acts as a shock-absorber when you are chewing. It can be applied to a new denture or placed in existing dentures at the time of relining. To ensure that your new soft lining provides continued comfort as time goes by and to prevent hygiene problems, you should have it checked every year and replaced when necessary. This will extend the health of your gum, as well as ensure maximum adherence and comfort. For any questions regarding your denture needs, contact Carson Denture Clinic to book a free consultation with no obligation.

What is my home Comparative worth? Market Analysis

■ Realtor

NANAIMO CLINICS 4-1150 Terminal Ave. N. 105-6560 North Island Hwy. www.connecthearing.ca

If it’s done correctly, a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) or The Free Home Evaluation TIM WAIT can be the next best thing to an appraisal in approximating the value of a property. The purpose of the CMA is to analyze data from properties similar to the subject property that has sold recently in order to project the realistic price at which the subject property would sell. I’m not an appraiser, but what I’ve always done is make upward and downward adjustments to the projected value of the subject property based on features and characteristics of the comparables I use. Some are based on “gut” feelings while other adjustments come about through rules of thumb I have developed from experience. Putting a value on real estate is an inexact science at best, and this methodology has worked pretty well for me over the years. I use a completely different method for projecting the value of land and property with residential development potential. How can you tell if the CMA you’ve been given is worth more than the piece of paper it’s written on? Call me at 713-1223 or email tim@timwait.com and I will let you know.

Is it true you have to have 20% Down Payment to buy a home?

KRISTA HENLEY &

Not for buying a primary residence which SHARON FAUCHON you will live in. For most the minimum down payment is 5% of the purchase price and that can be made up from a few different resources: 1) Your own savings 2) Withdrawl an investment/RRSP 3) A Gift from an immediate family member 4) Borrowed (As long as you qualify using the new monthly payment to pay back the borrowed amount) etc. One or more of these ways to make up the total 5% will do. However; if you are business for self then the rules can change a bit depending and you may have to come up with 10% down payment from own resources meaning no gift, not borrowed. This is a case by case basis and we can meet to discuss your specific situation. If you want to buy a rental property then you need 20% down payment and this is where you may have heard that before? Please feel free to call or email with any further questions.

Pitcher picked in big-league draft

I

RANGERS TAKE Cody Chartrand in 36th round.

You’ve just got to stay focused and go for the dream.

BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

A Nanaimo pitcher has big-league stuff, and now it’s put him in the pros. Cody Chartrand was chosen in the Major League Baseball Draft last week, selected in the 36th round by the Texas Rangers. The six-foot righthander played for the Nanaimo Pirates and the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners and most recently with the Lewis-Clark State Warriors. “Whenever you’re a kid playing baseball, you always dream of getting [drafted] one day,” Chartrand said. “I definitely thought it was possible for me … It was always my goal in the back of my mind and it’s finally paid off.” Jordan Blundell, VIBI manager, said he’s felt like Chartrand has been draft-ready for some time. “With us, he flashed some professional fastballs and some secondary pitches…” Blundell said. “We definitely felt like Cody had a chance to play beyond college and get a chance at professional baseball. He’s had all the things necessary to warrant that opportunity for awhile.” Chartrand was 5-0 with a 1.97 earned-run average at Lewis-Clark this past season and helped his team make it to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics World Series.

Cody Chartrand throws for the Lewis-Clark State Warriors during a game this season. The Nanaimoite was chosen in the 2014 MLB Draft.

“I think I learned how to pitch a little more, instead of just trying to throw it as hard as I can every time I go out,” he said. Leading up to the draft, Chartrand had been contacted by lots of teams and had filled

out medical forms and questionnaires, “but you never really know until it gets to the day what’s going to happen,” he said. Even though he was following the draft on the computer at his girlfriend’s house, he

missed the initial call from the Rangers and had to call back and reassure them of his interest. “It was always my dream to play professional baseball and I kind of figured, you’ve got to take your shot

when you get it,” he said. “So I was pretty excited to sign with them.” He’s been assigned now to the single-A Spokane Chiefs, who play in the same league as the Vancouver Canadians, so he’ll be back in B.C. soon enough. Getting drafted is exciting, said Chartrand, but at the same time he knows it’s one step. “It’s a tough business. I think you’ve just got to stay healthy and know what you’re good at,” he said. “You can’t get distracted or down on yourself. There’s going to be tough times, there’s going to be times when you’re not doing well, but you’ve just got to stay focused and go for the dream.” He works hard, but in some ways, it hardly seems like work when he steps on the ball field. That’s how it was growing up in Nanaimo and at Serauxmen Stadium, and that’s how it will be in Spokane, and at whatever ballparks await. “It’s just a great feeling you have when you step on the field…” said Chartrand. “You can really just lose yourself in baseball for a couple hours, and nothing else really seems to matter.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Hot goalie shuts down Timbermen BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

The Timbermen had a cold start, the opponent had a hot goalie, and the result was a tepid loss. The Nanaimo Timbermen were thumped 14-5 by the Langley Thunder in Western Lacrosse Association action on Sunday night at Frank Crane Arena. The visitors hustled to a 6-1 lead in the first period. “We’re starting a lot of games slow and picking it up, but we’re behind the eight ball, down by a few goals every time,” said Doug Langlois, T-men alternate captain. Nanaimo outshot Langley 49-41 but Thunder goaltender Brodie MacDonald was tough to beat. “He made a bunch of phenomenal saves on us,” said Kaleb Toth, T-men coach. “You’ve just got to keep going at it, you can’t let up, you’ve got to keep shooting the ball.” The Thunder’s goaltending and opportunistic scoring kept them in control. “We couldn’t get the momentum going, and we got too far behind even if we would have got it,” Toth said. “We were playing catch-up too much. We’ve got to figure it out and change something.” Langlois had a goal and three assists and Cayle Ratcliff, Paul Brebber, Blake Kenny and Braden Kmita also scored for Nanaimo. For an action photo from Sunday’s game, please visit www.nanaimobulletin.com. GAME ON … Nanaimo visits the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Thursday (June 19), then hosts the Coquitlam Adanacs on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Junior A Timbermen in tough shape in standings after losses The path to the playoffs gets a lot tougher now for the junior A Timbermen. Nanaimo’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League team lost 11-9 to the Victoria Shamrocks on Wednesday night at Frank Crane Arena in a matchup that had major

implications in the standings. “It hurts because we’re fighting for a playoff spot with those guys right now. That was a big game,” said Ken Morrison, coach of the T-men juniors. Nanaimo led 8-7 going

into the third period but Victoria scored twice early in the final frame. Travis Mickelson had three goals and three assists, Cody Short had three goals and two helpers and Mitch Parker had a goal and five assists

for Nanaimo. Andrew Miller and Owen Barker were other scorers. For an action photo from the game, please visit www. nanaimobulletin.com. On Sunday, the junior T-men lost 20-5 to the Coquitlam Adanacs on the

mainland. Brett Hawrys had two goals in that one and Brett Fleming, Miller and Parker were the other scorers. GAME ON … Nanaimo visits Delta on Saturday (June 21) and New Westminster on Sunday.
