Sweet Strawberries for Dad’s Day

Summer starts early for students By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Summer vacation came abruptly for elementary and middle school students in Langley on Thursday. Teachers in Langley were on strike Friday, participated in the B.C.-wide BCTF scheduled study session on Monday and with hopes of a settlement now dashed from a weekend of negotiating, the B.C. Teachers Federation planned to be on a full-scale strike for the remainder of the school year, starting Tuesday ( June 17). The board of education’s last meeting of the year, also on Tuesday, has been changed to Langley City Hall, to respect the striking teachers. Langley School District said students at the elementary and middle school levels aren’t likely going to receive a report card and if they do, a condensed version may be mailed to them. The Labour Relations Board ruled and an Essential Service Order was sent to school districts Monday, indicating that final grades for Grade 12 students will be provided to administration. A subsequent plan for this information to be provided to students and parents is now underway. The plans, once created, will be communicated to parents. The LRB is still addressing the remaining issue concerning the submission of marks for Grades 10 and 11 students. The Essential Services Order indicates that provincial examinations for Grades 10-12 will proceed as scheduled. District staff will be making arrangements to supervise provincial exams. The order indicates that students will be able to enter and exit the school property, as specific entrances will not be picketed. The school district is awaiting another Essential Services Order specific to support staff (including transportation). This information will be forwarded to families as it becomes available. Teachers were rallying outside Langley MLA Mary Polak’s office on Monday afternoon, following their earlier study session. Picketing is expected outside all school district facilities on Tuesday. Support staff, who are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees and recently agreed to a new contract, will be out of work while picketing takes place.

School zones don’t apply on strike days By JESSICA PETERS Aldergrove Star

School zones do not apply during strike days, the RCMP have confirmed. The question popped up on social media on Friday, a strike day in the school district. UFVRD’s media liaison Cst. Tracy

Wolbeck confirmed that public school zones that normally require drivers to slow down to 30 km/hr or less on school days only apply on regular school days. Strike days do not fall under that category. “It’s a really good question,” she said, and she had confirmed her answer with

the Fraser Valley traffic services department. But she warned that drivers be aware of whether they’re driving in a public school zone or a private school zone. Private schools that are still in session are not in the midst of a strike, so those areas would still be considered school zones, she warned.

Rains Fail to Dampen Enthusiasm for Bike Jam 4

Transit benefits seen here By FRANK BUCHOLTZ Aldergrove Star

Langley would benefit from proposed transit improvements outlined by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation on Thursday. The biggest improvement would be a B-Line express bus between Langley City and the SkyTrain line in Surrey on the route of the current 502 bus. It would offer frequent service and have a smaller number of stops. Within 12 years, an LRT line is proposed to run on the same route, from Surrey City Centre to Langley City. A B-Line bus is also proposed to run between Langley City and the new Evergreen Line at Coquitlam Centre, across the Golden Ears Bridge. It would also connect to West

Coast Express. It now operates Monday through Friday, with five trains into Vancouver in the morning and out to Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Mission in the evenings. The mayors’ plan calls for an expansion of that service as well. The plan also calls for a new tolled four-lane Pattullo Bridge, meaning the three river crossings closest to Langley will all be tolled. There would be improvements to the Langley City and Willowbrook transit exchanges and new bus service in both Willoughby and Brookswood. The plan calls for 11 new B-Line express bus routes, covering 200 kilometres; a 25 per cent increase in bus service, with many more routes getting frequent service of every 15 minutes and a 30 per cent boost in HandyDart service.

Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese said, “This will be a huge step towards easing congestion, protecting the environment, and providing better transportation options for our growing region. “Eleven mayors worked on this, and after 12 weeks of collaboration, we believe we have set out a vision that works for the entire region,” Froese said. “Our roads are already congested and we expect to see rapid growth in this area over the next few decades. This is an investment in transportation that will be great for the Township and all the communities on this side of the river. We need a transportation system that will create shorter commute times, get people out of their cars, and encourage them to make use of transit.”

Abbotsford Police track down pilfered pit bull puppies Aldergrove Star

Five pit bull puppies were returned to their West Abbotsford owners early Saturday morning after they had been stolen from their property. Abbotsford Police were called just after 1 a.m. from the occupants of a residence on a rural property in the Bradner Road area. Const. Ian MacDonald said the occupants, who raise pit bull puppies, noticed that their secure barn had been broken into and five of their seven puppies had been taken. They told an investigator that there were several people who had contacted them through online ads and expressed interest in purchasing the dogs. MacDonald said police chased down one of those leads and came upon four suspects and the puppies in

a vehicle about an hour later in central Abbotsford. The unharmed puppies were returned to the owners. “It’s a happy-ending story,” MacDonald said. The four suspects – all boys ages 14, 16 and two 18-year-olds – were arrested and now face potential break-and-enter charges, MacDonald said.

Parent fights for special needs children By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

A Langley family with three special needs children in the school system say they can speak first hand about the cuts to funding for special needs students. Lisa Moore-Penner claims speech therapy has been cut to one session every two weeks and special education assistants no longer can do one-onone work, but are forced to share their time among several students in one class, no matter how high the needs of the students. The Moore-Penners are a blended family with five kids, three of them with higher levels of special needs. Their twin girls do not speak, have mobility issues and have low cognitive ability. They were born with Rubenstein Taybi Syndrome and have recently been diagnosed with autism. They also have birth defects. The third child has Fetal Narcotic Syndrome and mild intellectual disability with a delay in fine motor skills and speech.

Located at the Corner of 248 Street & Fraser Hwy

IT

Her biological mother was using drugs during pregnancy. “This year, they cut the twins’ funding and put them in the same class with one Special Education Assistant (SEA) shared between three students. The twins need one SEA each due to their high needs,” said Moore-Penner. “Their speech therapy has been cut. Because they do not speak, and there is no funding for more speech therapy in the district, we have received funding from the Variety Club, CKNW and Presidents Choice Financial.” Collaboratively, they provide speech therapy five days a week, at an annual cost of $45,000. “We were told that for our third child that she wasn’t “bad” enough to warrant any extra help such as an education assistant, and that the resource teacher would try and get her a 30-minute session for extra help next year, but that her case load was so high that she wasn’t sure if this

would happen.” Langley School District spokesperson Ken Hoff said the district has been in ongoing conversations with this family for sometime now. “She is a great champion for her children, which is great and how it should be. But we feel there are a lot of resources and supports allocated to her children and to all our students with special needs.” Moore-Penner would disagree. “There are so many special needs children in the system and they are not being adequately funded for their needs. My story is just an example how we are fighting every day to get the proper resources and funding.” She had a meeting with the assistant superintendent of schools in Langley recently to go over the needs of her children. While there has been a slight increase in funding each year to fund SEAs and resources, it pales in comparison to the increased number of special needs students

Man’s body found in ditch Aldergrove Star

Canadian border authorities at the Aldergrove crossing notified their American counterparts, after spotting a body in a muddy ditch on the U.S. side of the border on Thursday, June 5. Whatcom County has identified the man as Suleman Jivani, 44, who had ties to both Atlanta and Vancouver. It is unknown what the man, who is not a citizen of either country, was doing in the corn field or in the ditch, but a coroner said his body had been there for around three weeks. The death is considered an accident. The ditches in that area are very wide and can be deep.

Some dragon boat racers are up for a Township of Langley commendation for saving a man from drowning in Bedford Channel in Fort Langley on April 14. According to a written description of the incident, distributed to Township council, the man was rowing without a life jacket around 10 a.m. when he suffered a cramp and fell into the water. Jan Choquete, a member of the Fast and Furious dragon boat team, alerted other boaters, directing them to help. A man on the Fort Langley Canoe Club dock, who wishes to remain anonymous, jumped in the water and swam to the floundering man and kept his head above the water until members of The Abreast with FORTitude dragon boat racers arrived. “The fellow in the water, he was not staying afloat,” said team coach Juanita Peglar. “He wasn’t able to swim, his head was going under the water, I think had it been many more moments he wouldn’t have made it.” The dragon boat racers put lifejackets on both men and towed them to shore. The account of the incident suggested several people should be considered for commendation by the Township, including Choquette, the unnamed man who swam to the drowning man, and

Editor: The Royal Westminster Regiment would like to extend its extreme gratitude to Pedre Contractors out of Aldergrove and to its employees for the donation of time, experience and materials towards the installation of a World War 2 relic at the Queens Armory in New Westminster. Foreman Robert Bertolini, together with Ian Lalley, Jordan Noble and Mitch Bartel, stepped up on their own accord during a work week in mid-May to offer thousands of dollars of expertise, equipment and materials so that the Royal Westminster Regiment could install a World War 2 troop carrier in time for the Melfa anniversary; an anniversary in which the regiment hosts and celebrates the accomplishments and veterans of the Regiment in World War 2. Without their generous aid there is no doubt the project would not have been completed in time. From Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Vernon and all the rest of the Westies we extend our extreme gratitude to these fine men and Pedre Contractors. VICTORIA – “Liberal” is becoming one of the most ill-defined words in Canadian politics. Here in B.C., a Liberal is a Conservative, or at least a fiscal conservative, bent on balancing budgets and battling big unions to force them to recognize today’s world of low growth and low inflation. In Ottawa, a Liberal is currently whatever Justin Trudeau wakes up and decides. One day he’s a libertarian who wants to legalize marijuana, and the next he’s in touch with his inner Taliban, issuing a moral edict on abortion. In Ontario, Premier Kathleen Wynne saved her gut-shot Liberal government by limping to the left of the NDP, promising to spend lots more borrowed money and build lots of transit. This is in a have-not province with an operating deficit that is currently running north of $12 billion. For comparison purposes, B.C.’s deficit swelled briefly beyond $3 billion in the wake of the Great Recession of 2009, and the books stayed in the red until last year as the B.C. Liberals unwound the Harmonized Sales Tax and repaid a $1.6 billion HST transfer allowance to Ottawa. You think B.C.’s energy policy is a disaster? Check out Ontario, where the cops are still investigating the $1

Ontario election lessons for B.C.

billion cancellation of plans to construct two natural gasfired power plants before the 2011 election. The gas plants were to stabilize erratic output from wind and solar power, a European-style climate change gesture that involved Ontario ratepayers giving a huge subsidy to Korean tech giant Samsung. The Ontario Liberals clung to power in part by promising a provincial pension scheme on the same scale as the Canada Pension Plan. B.C. has a similar pension program in the works, to be offered to the two thirds of small business and selfemployed people who don’t have a group plan with their employer. Ours would, of course, be voluntary. Not so in Ontario, where large and small businesses will be required to cough up half of the required pension payments. The Ontario model is dumb on several levels. It is to be imposed just as the baby boom retirement wave breaks across Canada’s most populous province, increasing risk that the pension pool may run dry. And it sticks small business with a new payroll tax in a province that has lost much of its traditional manufacturing base and needs to innovate. Here’s the funny part, if you don’t live in Ontario. Wynne tabled her spending-

spree, deficit-be-damned budget in an effort to convince the NDP to keep propping up the Liberal minority government and avoid an election. Instead, she won a majority and now has to implement her pie-in-the-sky promises. Ontario is bracing for a downgrade in its credit rating based on the election result, and is about to go into provincewide bargaining with public service unions who want their share from the Liberal money tree. Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak ran on a plan that sounded similar to the one presented by Christy Clark in 2013: hold the line on spending, balance the budget, reduce the size of government, stimulate job creation. Hudak was rejected for a second time, and resigned the leadership on election night. B.C. voters now have three years to see how the Ontario version of Liberal government plays out, compared to the B.C. Liberal version. For us, much depends on resource development, including forest products, natural gas and other trade with Asia. If all goes well here, B.C. can continue to send transfer payments to the fantasyland of Ontario. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Editor: The roads in Aldergrove are about to get bumpier. The mayor and Council have decided to spend our tax dollars on speed bumps on 29th Avenue, despite the fact they have no mandate to install speed bumps and no support from the public to do this. These speed bumps will push more traffic onto the side streets as people try to avoid the congestion created by these “traffic calming measures.” Most of the residential roads have no sidewalks, thus risking the pedestrians on those streets. It is not to late to to prevent 29th Avenue from becoming a bumpy drive like 32nd and 28th Avenues; call or write the Mayor and Council and let them know that you don’t want speed bumps as part of their “traffic calming measures.’ We can also remind them that in November we as residents of Aldergrove will be taking some “Council calming measures,” at the ballot box. Two sides to school strike Editor: I hear a lot of teacher bashing around my workplace and at sports fields at night. These experts typically opine that teaching kids is easy, and on top of it the job comes with two months off in the summer. It is funny how these experts are often the ones that rail against the concept of year round schooling whenever it comes up because it would cut into their summer vacations. It is difficult to get unbiased information regarding this perpetual conflict in B.C. For the most part, the media lacks the intellectual rigour to cover the matter beyond the usual storyline of parents scrambling to find child care while teachers are out. The government lacks any credibility as it relishes and encourages conflict with the BCTF because it scores big political points and the endgame is solely about acquiring and retaining power. This is an especially slick and crass government that purports to care about education and fiscal prudence. One cannot look to the BCTF for an unbiased perspective either. It is tightly controlled by a fringe of radicals that do not properly represent or reflect the interests of its membership. The union is more concerned with fighting various left wing causes around the world and with pushing back against the government with its own ideological fervor than it is in representing B.C. teachers. This is a union that continues to heap praise on Cuba because of its health and education systems, but it utterly ignores the fact that it is a communist dictatorship that represses its citizenry and denies it the most basic and fundamental human rights. To really comprehend what is going on inside of B.C. schools parents should talk with their kid’s teacher or friends or family that may be in this profession. This dialogue should occur at another time than the annual parent teacher meeting or when lobbying for an additional two percent on their kid?s science project or exam. Teachers do have the best interests of students at heart, and in mind. Teachers play a role as important as any in society, and they deserve to be fairly treated. I am not a teacher, but I support them. Tim Opper, Langley

Relay for Life Returns

Tidball dies at 83 By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

‘Josh’s Jedi Warriors’ were among the teams participating in the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life at Abbotsford’s Rotary Stadium on Saturday. The 12-hour event featured 38 teams and more than 300 partipants raising funds for the fight against cancer. At the outset of the relay, more than $60,000 had been raised. The Langley edition of the Relay for Life comes to McLeod Park this weekend.

Denim & Diamonds LMH gala tops $235,000 in donations By BRENDA ANDERSON Aldergrove Star

There was plenty of sparkle — but with a down-home feel. Saturday’s Denim & Diamonds gala put a bit of a western spin on the annual Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation fundraiser, with a new venue at Langley’s Highpoint Equestrian Estate and performances by a trio of female country artists. Langley sister act, Robyn and Ryleigh, performed their trademark vocal harmonies early in the evening, while Abbotsford recording artist Karen Lee Batten took over after dinner, bringing guests to their feet in record numbers. “This was my fifth gala, and that is the most dancing I’d seen,” said the LMH Foundation’s Errin Young.

“The venue itself was fabulous, it worked out well,” she said of the large stable, which was decorated in white lights and dotted with dozens of elegantly appointed tables. Adding to the glitz and glamour, was a $10,000 diamond necklace from Creative Goldsmiths. The grand prize in the evening’s Diamond Dig fundraiser — a tangerine sunset, 14 karat yellow and white gold chain with a diamond and pearl enhancer pendant — was won by Daile Hawley. Both the live and silent auctions went well, too, said Young. By the end of the night the figure raised had reached $235,000. But on Monday, Young said she expected the total would well surpass that once all the numbers had been added up. Among the event’s top donors

was Phil Jackman of Valley Traffic, who pledged to meet all donations up to $100,000. RBC, meanwhile, contributed $20,000. The hospital foundation received a gift of $10,000 from Drive for the Cure Foundation, which holds an annual tournament at Redwoods to raise funds for the fight against cancer. Another $10,000 contribution was made by Langley businessman Nick Nuraney. The Rotary Club of Langley Central donated $5,500. Money raised at the gala will be used to purchase equipment for the hospital. “Overall, the evening we felt was such a success,” said Young. “And the great thing is there were lots of new faces in the crowd.”

A legend in Langley has passed away. George Tidball, founder of Thunderbird Show Park and the Keg Steakhouse restaurants died peacefully on June 3, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 83. Tidball is known to many as a visionary and a cowboy who was a driving force behind growing the equestrian industry in Langley. With his wife Dianne by his side, Tidball is responsible for bringing the first McDonald’s Restaurant to Canada in 1967. It opened up in Richmond. He went on to open 32 more outlets. Tidball then came up with his idea for the Keg Steakhouse. He envisioned a casual dining spot, where people could eat good food but still wear their jeans. With his family’s passion for horses, they planted their roots in Langley in the early 1970s. The Keg in the Country was originally attached to the first Thunderbird equestrian centre he opened at 200 Street, now the site of Colossus complex. George is survived by his wife, Dianne and the couple’s four children, Jane, Laura, Kathy and Stephen. Daughter Jane Tidball is president and tournament director at Thunderbird, now located at 248 Street and 72 Avenue. Thunderbird is one of the top show parks in North America.

$600,000 in donations for Holmberg House By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star

Abbotsford Hospice Society (AHS) has announced $600,000 in donations towards completing the construction of its Holmberg House adult hospice. The $7 million raised in phase one resulted in the shell of the building being constructed, but concerns were raised last fall that its completion would be delayed. The organization announced in November that it was facing a funding shortfall and needed another $3.7 million to finish construction of the facility, located on the Campus of Care next to Abbotsford Regional

Hospital on Marshall Road. Another $1.3 million was needed to fully furnish the facility and for other start-up costs. On Friday morning, a presentation was held at the current Abbotsford Hospice Society building – on Marshall Road east of the Campus of Care – to honour individuals, businesses and organizations who had donated $10,000 or more for phase two of the project. Patrick Giesbrecht, who is co-chairing the Holmberg House capital campaign with Vijay Manuel, said a more comprehensive public and donor campaign is working to raise the $5 million

needed to complete construction of the facility by the end of 2015. This campaign includes the “Leaders Circle,” a group of community members who have agreed to serve as campaign ambassadors: Manuel, Michael Dick, Ken Funk, Jon Eaton, Christine Wiebe, George Peary, Bruce Beck, Barry Turchen, Patricia Sapielak, Andy Sidhu, Aman Gill, Gary Dickinson and Angelo Rea. Holmberg House, named for Dave Holmberg Jr., who died of cancer in March 2011 at the age of 48, will be the city’s first adult hospice, providing a home-like

setting for people nearing the end of their lives. The three-storey 30,000-square-foot building is one of three facilities on the Campus of Care. The other two are Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Matthew’s House, a respite facility for children with complex health-care needs. Individuals attending the donor recognition event on Friday included Dave Holmberg Sr. and family, who have made a $1 million commitment to help build the facility; MLAs Mike de Jong, Darryl Plecas and Simon Gibson; Mayor Bruce Banman; AHS board chair David Turchen; and AHS’s new executive

director, Bev Brown. Donors were: – Gary and Carolyn Dickinson, $125,000; – Tom and Isabella Yakashiro, $52,000; – Dennis and Judy Morelli, $150,000; – Marshall Aerospace, $10,000; – Fraser Valley Regional District, $50,000; – Bruce Beck, $11,000; – Raymond Geertsma, $17,500; – Frances Shkuratoff, $125,000; – Richard Oldenborger, $10,000; – United Sales (Bob Johnston), $15,000; and – Gerry Adams, $25,000. A buono new sport has been introduced at Willoughby Community Park, thanks to a partnership between the Township of Langley and the Fraser Valley Italo Canadian Society. Two bocce courts were unveiled on June 11 at the park, next to the Langley Events Centre at 7888 – 200 Street. Bocce is an Italian game that involves throwing balls from one end of a court to the other, and is traditionally played outdoors. The new courts were constructed by the Township’s Parks Department for the BC Seniors Games, which are being hosted by Langley this September. They will also provide a venue for local residents who want to try the sport. The two bocce courts are made of wood timbers surrounding a compacted and leveled sand playing surface.

Aldergrove Star

‘A Day to Heel’ will be held Sunday, June 22 in the City of Langley. This occasion will serve three purposes: first and foremost to honour the six dogs which tragically perished on May 13, 2014; secondly to express thanks from the dogs’ families to the Pet Searchers organization and the many individuals in the community who went to great lengths to try and locate the missing dogs; and to provide awareness and education on the ways we can help keep our pet companions safe. Kevin Woronchak, owner of Until We Meet Again Pet Memorial Center, says, “Dr. Alan Wolfelt coined the term companioning, in part, it means to walk alongside someone who is grieving. A Day to Heel is a beautiful opportunity for all of us to do just that for the families who have lost their beloved companions. The human animal bond is a powerful thing and I believe that it is our deep understanding of this bond that has brought us together after this tragic event. Animal lovers and those who would like to show the families their support, are invited to attend A Day to Heel, Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m. in Spirit Square at Douglas Park, 20933 Douglas Crescent (at 204th Street), City of Langley.

Grand prix helps to nourish students’ minds and bellies By MIRANDA GATHERCOLE Aldergrove Star

More than $60,000 was raised at the ninth annual Langley School Foundation’s Grand Prix celebration at Thunderbird Show Park on June 1. The sold out affair had guests watching an international world class show jumping event that saw Brian Morton as the winner. Under blue skies, 13 different wineries were pouring a selection of B.C. wines. The money raised will go to innovative technology, some to help students with learning disabilities. It will also go to essential programs. One of those essential programs is meal programs at schools. “We are really doing a push on making sure all kids in the district

can be fed and to keep this program sustainable,” said foundation executive director Susan Cairns. “Sadly, the need in the district is great and there are many coming to school hungry.” Along those lines, the foundation would like to fund greenhouses at school where vegetables can be grown by the students and used in the meal programs. “Then the students can take ownership of feel they are contributing rather than feeling like it is a hand out,” she said. Already, this exists at Aldergrove Secondary and the goal is to bring it to Brookswood Secondary next, said Cairns. To learn more go to langleyschooldistrictfoundation.org/.

been one of my all-time favourite cars because of its simplicity. The small, light, thrifty dimensions matched to a raspy 2.0L 4-cylinder and 6-speed manual makes for a fantastic powerto-weight distribution, meaning the 160hp engine might not sound like much on paper but, in practice, it makes the most of every situation. One thing Mazda’s event planners had us do was drive and collect information for each days challenges. All of these were kept secret until the beginning of each drive, including the roads we might travel. A surprise was that some sections were unpaved. Taking Mazda’s brand new MX-5 through forest back-roads at speed, meant rocks flying, branches felled from the previous night’s storm kicking up, sliding sideways through corners and pounding over rough and rutted gravel. At the end, the MX-5 showed no signs of wear; it just powered on to the next challenge, which was another surprise, the Atlanta Motorsports Park for an autocross challenge. To say we went from one extreme to the other is an understatement. An hour earlier I was sliding across gravel roads, followed by sliding around a racetrack trying to avoid pylons to dial in my best lap time. As it turns out I did get the second best time of the event but one of those pylons got in the way, knocking down my time by two seconds, all part of the challenge’s rules. Over the three-day event, Alexandra and I didn’t have one disagreement, I made some navigational errors and so did she. We let it roll, these were long days and we hoped a few small glitches wouldn’t impact our score too much. We also missed one major clue in our guidebook, one that was worth a whopping 50 points. At the end, we had slipped from second place after the first day to fifth place. Sadly, next year we won’t be able to proudly display the number one on the side of our Black Press car. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca
