Vancouver Coastal Health hosts community meeting BY KEVIN O’NEILL Twenty valley residents attended a meeting on June 3 sponsored by Vancouver Coastal Health. Facilitated by VCH Communications Director, Belinda Boyd, and Community Engagement Representative, Jody Sydor-Jones, the public meeting was the first since operations at our hospital passed from the United Church to VCH on April 1.
A general introduction focused on Vancouver Coastal Health’s geographic mandate, which serves over 25 percent of B.C.'s population encompassing several municipalities, regional districts and no less than fourteen First Nations communities. VCH is currently engaged in a major shift in the way the health care system operates, with a greater attention being given to community engagement. As this is
an evolving process, VCH can’t be sure how this engagement process will affect services to Bella Coola. However, a Community Engagement Advisory Network (CEAN) has begun, and attendees at the meeting were encouraged to sign up and get involved. Forms were distributed, and more information about CEAN is available on the VCH website for interested residents who were unable to attend this
meeting. In addition, CEAN sign-up forms will be made available at the hospital The floor was then opened for questions, and the first asked about the relationship between VCH and B.C,'s newly formed First Nations Health Authority (FNHA). While this relationship is also still evolving, an accord has been signed between the two parties committing each to work in partnership.
A further discussion ensued, addressing the place of Nuxalk traditional medicines and alternative treatment options within our local hospital operational structure. Next, support for the tele-health program was expressed; with a plea for expansion of the program to better serve the counseling and mental health needs of the community. Support for the expansion of currently minimal psychiatric
services in the valley was also expressed. The VCH representatives did offer unqualified support for the tele-health program, and suggested that local screenings of films related to mental health issues might be another way to offer much needed support to our community. Finally, questions about the level of support for seniors who suffer from chronic illness were raised, highlighting the need for an extended care
facility. While no definite commitment was offered in this area, VCH is exploring how financial resources might be shifted to facilitate this longstanding valley goal. In closing, VCH stated that more such community meetings are planned, to offer valley residents an opportunity to get involved and express their personal views on how the provision of health care services can be improved and expanded.

Cowboy Up! Johnson Brothers to play Rodeo Dance June 27 & 28 This July longweekend marks the 29th Annual British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA) Bella Coola Valley Rodeo, hosted by the Valley Ridge Riders (VRR). This year’s celebration kicks off with an open gymkhana, starting at 3:00 pm on Friday, June 27th. Activities continue Friday evening, with the traditional “family night” dance, where awards will be presented to the winners of the gymkhana. The refreshment garden will be open all afternoon and evening, with the atmosphere intended to be informal and family friendly. We look forward to visiting with our friends and neighbours, and to celebrating our community’s volunteer spirit. A highlight for many people, Friday and Saturday night’s dances will feature the live music of the Johnson Brothers, performing from 9:30 pm until you walk home to your campsite, or until our friends from the Bella Coola Bus Company deliver you to your doorstep in the wee hours of the morning. Five-piece country rock band, the Johnson Brothers, originate from the Lower Mainland, and have solid roots in
the country music scene. Born the grandsons of CCMA Hall of Fame member, Elmer Tippe, and nephews to CCMA and BCMA award winner Rick Tippe, the brothers (Brett and Trent), were destined to tackle the country music industry. Their passion for music and high energy stage shows have caught the attention of music lovers and has helped set the brothers apart from other acts in the province. In 2011 the band released their first full length album, titled Burnin’ Diesel. In 2013 they cowrote and released Summertown, and saw the single crack the Top 100 Canadian Country Chart. The band has received numerous BC Country Music Award Nominations over the years, including Album of the Year in 2011 for Burnin’ Diesel. Growing up in a family full of musical talent, it was no shock when the brothers decided to put together a working band in 2002. Over the past 12 years, the band has taken the stage at many clubs, festival and fairs, and has shared the stage, opening for some of country music’s top artists, includ-

ing Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels, Johnny Reid, Gord Bamford, and Aaron Pritchett. Not only influenced by country music, the brothers have a bit of rock edge and have seen it become a big part of their live shows and in their songwriting. They like to perform and write music that they can relate to, that has a groove that the audience can both listen to and dance along with. The Valley Ridge Riders are pleased to present the Johnson Brothers for this year’s rodeo, and thank Rip Rap Campsite for hosting the band. Saturday and Sunday’s actionpacked rodeo performances get underway at 1:00 pm,
following the Grand Entry and a heaping plate of Cowboy Breakfast, served from 7:00 - 10:00 am daily. The action will continue all weekend and into Monday afternoon so don’t miss it! We look forward to seeing everyone at the rodeo grounds on Walker Island during this July long weekend, where outstanding community support is what ensures the continued success of this event. As always, we continue to welcome volunteers to help with an assortment of tasks, both before and during the rodeo. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Tourists appalled with BC Ferries lack of cooperation and respect Dear Bella Coola Mountain Lodge, CC: Coast Mountain News It is with much regret that I must cancel our trip for my wife Lee and I in August. The reason is BC Ferries and their unwavering attitude. Their new
schedule cancelled out my Plan A, their full Capacity cancelled out Plan B, and their full Capacity from Port Hardy for Passengers only Cancelled out Plan C. Capacity for Plan D was ‘a maybe’ at best with a standby request. So after booking accommodation and
changing and reproposing alternatives for two weeks it is with regret that I have to say that I have given up. I can only hope that a new government will be a change back to reality for international travelers and I hope they sack all that are there now. My wife and I are
sad and were looking forward to Bella Coola and the ‘Hill’, so it is with regret that I have to cancel. I tried calling and left a message, not expecting you to return my call from Australia. So, we will live in hope for another day and say that this time around was
beyond our control. Many thanks for all your help and advice and we will look forward to another day and time, without BC Ferries involved. Words escape me in terms of the inconvenience and upset to planning. While I have had some great discussions with sev-
eral people, with all of them going miles out of their way to help, everyone talked of the poor reputation of BC Ferries. As a tourist spending several thousand Canadian dollars incountry and planning the dream holiday of our life time, my heart goes out to people
such as you for the lack of cooperation, courtesy and respect shown by BC Ferries. I have traveled the world many times over and never experienced anything like this, anywhere. Sincerely, James Kidwell Australia
Lodge owner sums up ferry cancellation as regionally unfair Dear Editor, Is BC Ferries currently being run to serve all coastal British Columbians, and the communities that depend on the coast? It appears not. An analysis of the numbers shows a large disparity between cuts to Route 40, servicing the Central Coast, and Route 5, servicing holiday homes in the southern gulf Islands for Victoria decision makers. The utilization rate on Route 40 is 29.5 percent and the one
for Route 5 is somewhat higher at 36.4 percent. However, considering only the successful direct sailing on Route 40, between Port Hardy and Bella Coola, the utilization rate is a respectable 48.25 percent. This is the fourth best performance of all the “Non-Major Routes” (out of a total of 18 routes). Route 40 also saw a respectable 6.15 percent growth in its capacity utilization in the year 2012 to 2013. Nevertheless Route 40 has been cut
completely. This cut is devastating a six million dollar tourism industry in the region. Some businesses are reporting an 80-90 percent drop in reservations for the summer season. Compare and contrast that with the Route 5. There are zero cuts on this route even though fully 16.6 percent of sailings have utilization of less then 10 percent. There is even one sailing a week that reports zero percent utilization (no passengers on board). Furthermore

Route 5 experienced a 2.12 percent decline in ridership between March 2012 and March 2013. Minister Stone self righteously stated in the Legislature on May 15th, 2014, “I think that the height of hypocrisy … vessels that have single-digit utilizations. Again, I challenge the Leader of the Opposition to stand up and to tell British Columbians…. Does he support running ferries in British Columbia with more staff on board than passengers? I think British Columbians would be very interested to know what the answers to those questions are”. Indeed, we here in the Central Coast, would very much like an answer to this

question. The direct sailing to Bella Coola had 48.25 percent occupancy but was cut while sailings to holiday homes for Victoria decision makers, many running below 10 percent occupancy, had absolutely zero cuts. This is the height of hypocrisy! Is there an economic reason for the complete closure of Route 40? Did it need to be cut because the revenue doesn’t support the expenses? Analyzing data from BC Ferries Annual Report Ending Mar 31, 2013 shows that Route 40 and Route 5 broadly have a ratio of revenue to expense that is very similar at 29 percent and 31 percent. The cost of operat-
ing Route 40 cannot therefore be the reason the government and BC Ferries determined it needed to be closed. Looking at the level of subsidy provided for the two routes we find that this is also unfairly allocated. The provincial subsidy to Route 40 is a mere 3.59 percent while the subsidy to Route 5 is 10.99 percent. Most egregiously, Route 40 gets only 1.02 percent of the federal subsidy while Route 5 gets a disproportionate 13.87 percent of the federal subsidy. This is particularly galling since the intent of the original federal subsidy was to support ferry service to the Central and North Coast.
In another interesting coincidence, no cuts were proposed to Routes 4 or 12 either, also routes servicing the Victoria area. Why are services into and out of Victoria not being considered for cuts? Where is the voice for the Central Coast, the Chilcotin and Cariboo when ‘difficult’ decisions are being made on which routes are cut? What services will we be asked to support next: more affordable hydro for just the lucky few, or maybe superior public medical services for those well connected? Sincerely, Beat Steiner Tweedsmuir Lodge Bella Coola Do you have something you need to sell!

Bella Coola enjoys Oceans Day 2014 at the wharf By Kaitlyn Dionne Despite the rain, the 2014 Bella Coola World Oceans Day celebration was a great success! The fantastic face painting by Leah Moody meant we had lots of sharks, whales, octopi and other sea creatures wandering the site, where games and a fishing derby added to the fun of learning about the different animals found in the ocean and how important the Bella Coola estuary is and has been for the community. Many were surprised to hear that over 70 percent of our oxygen is produced by the Ocean and that estuaries are one of the most productive habitats in the world. The aquarium and touch tank pool gave everyone a first-

to Finn and Elsie Carlson who won the fishing derby with their prize catches of Starry Flounder but alas, there were no “pirates” who completed the scavenger

Special thanks goes to Leah Moody for the face painting, Janice Kyle for providing an opportunity for folks to experience kayaking, Donna and Paul Grace-Campbell, Rene Morton and Harvey Thommasen for leading our educational estuary tour and to Garrett Newkirk for providing harbour tours throughout the day. Thanks to everyone else who volunteered (and there were many) and to Tom and Crystal at our harbor for their support and assistance! Your hard work truly made the day a success.

Rachelle Van Zanten returns; The Fugitives to close the weekend at Bella Coola Music Fest “Rachelle van Zanten is our voice, the muse of the North. She writes songs to inspire the wind, give voice to thunder, and fire the hearts of all those fighting to protect the land she loves so dearly,” wrote acclaimed author Wade Davis, in National Geographic Magazine. After 11 years working in assorted bands, Canadian slide guitarist Rachelle van Zanten released her first solo album, “Back to Francois”, in 2006. It was packed with funky blues riffs and stellar slide performances, but van Zanten juxtaposed her gutsy guitar playing with very personal and introspective lyrics. She attributes this stylistic trait to her diverse influences, including her bluegrass upbringing in the

So they surprised themselves by trucking three thousand kilometres to Toronto, to record Bigger than Luck, their new EP and precursor to a fulllength album out this fall. The band is eclectic, boasting prominent former members like Mark Berube and CR Avery, and other multi-instrumentalists whose styles range from bluegrass to jazz. Their first fulllength album received a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for “Pushing the Boundaries” of contemporary roots music, and their follow-up was praised for being “eclectic and exciting” “poignant” and “infectious.” They’ve gone on to sell out shows at venues as diverse as the Vienna Literary Festival, the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, and the Vancouver Jazz Festival, while maintaining a frequent spot on the Canadian folk festival circuit. Public invited for a close encounter of the bat kind at Clayton Falls By Helen Davis Some of the lesserknown inhabitants of the Clayton Valley watershed will be in the spotlight this July, when biologists Helen Davis (Artemis Wildlife) and Mandy Kellner (Kingbird Biological) conduct surveys for these elusive creatures, in a project funded by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program - Coastal. Goshawks, large forest-dwelling birds of prey, live in low densities across Eurasia and North America. mon Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) to the rare Keen’s Myotis (Myotis keenii), a species found only along the west coast of British Columbia and southeast Alaska. Our knowledge of bats is limited because they are active at night, they fly, and humans
cannot hear the majority of sounds they make. However, we do know that they are invaluable members of the forest ecosystem, eating more than their weight in insects (such as mosquitos!) every night. We also know that bat populations face many threats, including the alarming spread of White Nose Syndrome, a fungal disease that has already decimated bat population in Eastern Canada. The first step to protecting our bats is to determine which species are actually present, conduct research into habitat use, and identify habitats such as roosting areas or that are critical to survival. Also vital are programs that increase public knowledge about bats and develop local stewardship programs around bats and their habitats.
To this end, we would like to invite any interested people to come out to a public mist-netting night to learn about bats, bat research, and our findings so far. If we are lucky, we will catch some bats
and have a chance to see them up close. Weather-permitting (no rain), this event will take place on Saturday, July the 25th, at 9 pm at the BC Hydro Clayton Falls Recreation Site. Participants will need
to be prepared for buggy weather, and should have a flashlight or headlamp. Please contact: Helen Davis, Artemis Wildlife Consultants at hdavis@ artemiswildlife.com or 250-388-5515.

BC Green Party Leader visits Bella Coola By Caitlin Thompson
BC Green Party leader Adam Olsen, his wife Emily and their two children visited Bella Coola last week.
Adam Olsen, the interim leader of the BC Green Party, was in Bella Coola last week as part of a meetand-greet tour of the Cariboo-Chilcotin and the Central Coast. Residing in Victoria, BC, Olsen made the
trip with his wife, Emily, and two young children, five-year-old Silas and two-year-old Ella. “It’s our first time in Bella Coola and we are thrilled,” said Olsen. “We are trying to get out to as many parts of the province as possible, and it’s been a great trip so far.” A former Central Saanich city councilor, Olsen came in third in the riding but the margin was small, only 379 votes. The close result proved Mr. Olsen’s credibility among the Green ranks, resulting in the offer of the leadership position after the resignation of former leader Jane Sterk last summer. While he is still considering a run for the top job, he said he’s enjoying the position so far. “My primary goal is to win my riding in Saanich North in the 2017 election,” he said. “In 2013 Andrew Weaver won the first Green seat in the legislature and I was a close second, so that remains my focus right now.” A member of the Tsartlip First Nation, Olsen is involved in two family businesses, runs his own consulting firm and is now the voice for the Green Party in BC. His approach seems simple: talking with British Columbians face-to-face. “We’re interested in giving everyone a chance to vote Green,” he said. “While our strength is certainly rooted in Southern Vancouver Island, we want to ensure there are candidates in every riding in BC.” Out of BC’s 85 ridings, the party ran about 60 candidates in the last election. Olsen wants this to change, and this tour is partly about finding those local representatives. “I don’t believe in parachuting candidates in,” he explained. “We would much rather see a local representative for the party, someone who understands the local
issues and knows the community.” Despite the fact that the Green Party still doesn’t enjoy official party status (it needs four seats in the legislature, at present it has one), Olsen remains confident in the power of one. “One MLA can do a lot,” he said. “All you need to do is look at Elizabeth May and everything she’s accomplished at the federal level, or Andrew Weaver in Victoria. The difference is the courage these people exhibit, you have to be courageous and stand up for what you believe in.” While many people may think of the Greens as being proenvironmental, not everyone is familiar with their position on First Nations issues. “We completely recognize Aboriginal Rights and Title,” said Olsen. “The Supreme Court has already confirmed this, and for us as a party it’s not a question.” Growing up on reserve, Olsen ‘lived the debate,’ and believes it’s time to address First Nation’s issues head on. “The government is always trying to sidetrack the discussion, to kick the problem down the road,” he said. “It’s not working.” While Olsen said the Green Party fully supports self-government for First Nations people, he concedes that at present there is no practiced model to follow, and it cannot be implemented as a whole on individual communities. “It really has be a communitybased decision,” he said. “One community cannot tell another what to do or how to do it; it’s something that has to evolve organically.” As far as the future of the Party, Olsen remains confident that the Green approach is relevant, and, essential. “The reality is that we are all facing the same problems,” said Olsen. “We need to come together to fix it.”
