Liberal government recently recognized Coldwell Ranch in Jesmond, near Clinton, and its 100 years of ranching in British Columbia with a Century Farm Award. Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart presented the award that thanked the Coldwell Family for its strong contribution to the provincial agriculture industry and its history.

“Pioneer farm families are such a big part of our British Columbia history and the Century Farm Awards are a great way to recognize their achievements. I want to congratulate and thank the Coldwell family on 100 years of ranching in our local community; your dedication is admired and appreciated.” The story began in 1913 when the Coldwell

ROTARY MOMENTS

CMHA-SC fundraising chair and event co-ordinator Didi Henderson invites folks to form a team to get involved in the branch’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Team themes and costumes are important to the Ride Don’t Hide format, she says. “Having fun is an important key to mental well-being. So, we encourage people to come as a team and invent a fun theme. We created a special award (The Golden Spoke Award) for the most creative team.” It costs $35 to register for the ride, which includes a professional cycling shirt; $20 without a shirt; and the family rate is $40 or by donation on the day of the race. Cycling shirts may be purchased as available after the ride for $15. Henderson notes folks can register at the 108 Heritage Site on June 22 between 9 and 11 a.m.

Big LNG investors endorse B.C. plan Investors’ final commitment more than a year away

By Tom Fletcher Black Press

The biggest players in British Columbia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export proposal are still more than a year away from final commitment, but their latest step forward is a vote of confidence, according to Andy Calitz, the chief executive officer of LNG Canada. Representatives of Shell

Canada, Korea Gas, Mitsubishi and PetroChina announced signing of a joint venture agreement for the LNG Canada project in Vancouver recently, with Premier Christy Clark and Natural Gas Minister Rich Coleman on hand. Calitz cautioned that a final investment decision depends on completion of reviews by B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Office and the Oil and Gas Commission. The companies will begin engineering work, and those steps will take another 18 to 24 months, Calitz said. The partnership includes an

increase in Shell’s stake to 50 per cent, with PetroChina retaining 20 per cent and Mitsubishi and Korea Gas reducing their shares from 20 to 15 per cent. Calitz noted the companies have other projects in development in Africa, Australia, Russia and elsewhere, and the change does not reflect any loss of confidence in B.C. He acknowledged the B.C. Liberal government’s commitment to increase industrial skills training in the school and apprenticeship system, announced on April 29. Calitz said there are international factors affecting the

export price, but LNG Canada is looking beyond Asia to other world markets. There are three key factors in deciding whether to commit to the Kitimat project, Calitz added. They are shifts in the gas price in Asia, the supply and cost of labour to build the plant and pipelines, and construction of gas pipelines through the Rocky Mountains. The companies have an agreement with TransCanada to build a pipeline, and gas production underway in the Horn River, Montney, Cordova and Liard shale formations in northeastern B.C.

Canim Lake students visit Tofino

Carole Rooney Free Press

An exciting field trip to the West Coast is just winding up for 26

Eliza Archie Memorial School students, June 15-20. Along with 14 adults, the children stayed in dorms at Jamie’s

Rainforest Inn in Tofino, where they all got a chance to go out on the ocean to experience whale watching. Prior to leaving,

Psalm 23 hosting yard sale Ken Alexander Free Press

Psalm 23 Transition Society is having a yard sale at the Psalm 23 Recovery Training Centre – and future site of the Village of Hope – on Saturday (June 21) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The yard sale will be held across Highway 97 from the training centre, which is 13 kilometres south of 70 Mile House. There will be household items, tools, furniture, universal weight equipment and lightly used clothing, shoes and boots for sale. They will also be serving hotdogs and pop.

The revenue from the event will go towards the programs of Psalm 23’s Village of Hope. “We enjoy putting on our yard sales as we get so many people dropping in looking for great deals, but for us, it is also a wonderful opportunity to share information about our charity and the work we do to help families break the cycle of addiction,” says Psalm 23 Transition Society’s founder and executive director Marvin Declare. “We are hitting the time of season where our monthly donations go down and we rely on our yard sale to help us make us some of that shortfall.”

school principal Barb MacLeod noted the students worked hard at raising money for the trip. “The school took on selling beef jerky, chocolate bars and lollipops, and we made advertising buttons to order – we did very well with that.” The students also held a bottle drive and tooney bucket raffles and sold cedar wreaths and cinnamon buns, she said, adding their parents also got involved in organizing turkey shoot games and canteens at sports jamborees.

Leading up to the trip, the children studied whales both by reading and by learning with puppets, figurines, painting and making play dough models, she explained. “We watched some whaling on a video, a historical account where they showed First Nations in canoes and how the whales would come right up underneath. “It’s an outdoor learning adventure. We can’t do any of this here, so that is the whole point of picking this spot. It’s a pretty big deal.”

Two years and three months, some 30,000 miles through 17 countries, and Lucas Cardenas and Florencia Bratovich have almost it. The Argentinean couple are on their way to Alaska in a 1989 Cadillac limousine. They passed through the South Cariboo recently and visited 100 Mile House on June 3. When asked about their journey, Cardenas talks about meeting new people, seeing new places, trying new meals and having adventures everyday. “Life should be like that. In the beginning, we left everything behind – our family, our friends, our house. “It was not easy. But, I think this is the best choice we’ve ever made in our entire lives.” To finance their transcontinental road trip from South America to North America’s northwest extreme – a world-record-setting trip in a limousine – the couple is selling photos and a book they wrote, América Sin Limites (or “America without limits”). The inside of the limo has been converted into a living space with a bed and small kitchen. Bratovich and Cardenas are travelling without watches and cell phones. They sleep when they’re tired, eat when they’re hungry, and basically just “go with the flow.” Cardenas says the question they’re asked the most about life on the road is “a sad question.” “We’ve spent 835 days travelling in the most amazing places you can imagine, meeting so

many people, having friends everyday. And the first question of the media all the time is the same: ‘What was your worst day?’” “I think it’s a little bit sad. Sorry, but we’ve never had any major problems.” The trip together is like living a dream, Cardenas explains. “If you can go for your dreams with your lovely person, that’s the best. You cannot ask for more in this life.” The couple had been in British Columbia for one month when they stopped in 100 Mile House and Cardenas says their time in the province has been amazing. “It’s so beautiful. The people are some of the

best people [we’ve met] in our travels. We’re glad to be here and very grateful.” From 100 Mile House, the couple planned on visiting Prince George and then mentioned Dawson Creek, where the Alaska Highway begins. “We are feeling like we’re so close right now,” says Cardenas. “We spent so much

time thinking about going to Alaska. We have to start thinking about how we’re going to come back to Argentina. “We haven’t thought about that,” he adds with a laugh. “We’ll see what happens.” Visit www.americasinlimites.tv to learn more or follow their journey on Facebook or Twitter.

The ThompsonNicola Regional District is raising tipping fees for demolition, land-clearing, and construction (DLC) waste effective July 1 at all waste facilities in the TNRD. The tipping fees for DLC waste will go from $60 per tonne to $120 per tonne, as per a new bylaw that was adopted by the TNRD board of directors. The bylaw will also see changes to household refuse fees on Jan. 1, 2015, as well as a further increase in DLC fees to $160 per tonne on that same date. The new fee structure will give customers the ability to save money by source-separating DLC waste. A separate lower fee will be applied to select waste streams if they are separated. The lower fees only apply at sites where separate collection areas exist. People should contact the TNRD Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. if they have questions about specific TNRD facilities – toll free at 1-877377-8673, or e-mail to admin@tnrd.ca. The fee increases are in step with the userpay principle adopted in the TNRD Solid Waste Management Plan. These changes will move costs away from the taxpayer and towards the user. The new fee structure creates incentive for customers to source separate demolition and construction waste, allowing materials to be recycled instead of land filled. The new fees will make TNRD fees comparable to other regional districts in the southern Interior. Presently, the TNRD has some of the lowest fees in the southern Interior.
