Schools accounted for $51.6 million in property tax revenues. See the complete list by searching “annual report” on the City of Victoria’s website at victoria.ca.
Paddling for men’s health

Canadian Olympian and Victoria resident Simon Whitfield and 10 other athletes paddled into the Inner Harbour Saturday after three days and 140 kilometres of stand up paddle boarding across the Salish Sea. The paddle was organized by Whitfield and the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation to coincide with Canadian Men’s Health Week and draw attention to men’s health issues. The CMHF recently launched a national campaign called Don’t Change Much to inspire men to make small changes to feel better and live healthier. Reduce, reuse, recycle, reforest
A
Kyle Slavin Reporting
Hartland Happening event offers behind-thescenes look at region’s landfill operations
family of ducks swims to the edge of a freshwater pond and waddles up a slight embankment to enter a growing forest of Douglas fir trees. The air smells clean, as a light breeze passes through this expansive site in rural Saanich. This isn’t the lands surrounding Prospect Lake or a daylighted section of Tod Creek – the grounds occupied by Hartland landfill. Below those ducks’ feet is 40-plus years worth of garbage – 50 metres deep and 4.5 million cubic metres of trsh. But you would never know it from the surface. This is Phase 1 of Hartland landfill. When it was filled to capacity in 1998 it was closed and covered up. Now it’s in the process of being transformed into a natural forest. “If you can visualize it, we’re on a whole bunch of garbage right now. Then on top of that is 10 feet of dirt, then this two-inch piping lays across the entire footprint, then on top of that is a big, geotextile membrane, and then on top of that membrane is another 10 to 15 feet of dirt, and then we reforest it with native plants,” says Drew Fafard, supervisor of safety and technical services for Hartland operations. The reforestation is a long-term project that began at the landfill in 2004. In the decade since, more than 25,000 native trees and plants have been planted on the site. “Eventually when everything’s closed, you’re not going to know this was a landfill,” says Monique Booth, supervisor of communications and education for Capital Regional District environmental services. The goal is for the landfill footprint to eventually blend in seamlessly with the forested area and Mount Work Regional Park that shares a border with the property. Hartland landfill is divided into two phases. All of the Capital Region’s garbage that’s sent to the landfill today (and since April 1997) is deposited in Hartland Phase 2. It’s that phase that’s currently slated to be full – 10.3 million cubic metres of garbage – by 2049. But Booth says that deadline could potentially be pushed back indefinitely if people follow the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle.
Kyle Slavin/News staff
Monique Booth and Drew Fafard stand among the native vegetation replanted at Hartland Landfill over the old fill site. Layered some 50 metres below their feet is decades worth of garbage. “It might not ever be full; if diversion rates keep going up. But I think once it’s full and closed, we’re going to be transitioning back to the natural environment surrounding the site,” she says. “Right now we’re in the middle of our solid waste management plan, and that’s something we’re going to look to the community on. We really feel like this is our region’s landfill and it’s our region’s decision on what happens to it in the future.” This weekend, the landfill hosts Hartland Happening, a behind-thescenes event that gives residents in the Capital Region a better understanding of where their garbage goes and what’s going on at the landfill. “I like to think of it as, ‘Come say
hello to away.’ People throw away so much stuff, and it really doesn’t go that far away,” Booth says. “If you grew up in Victoria, everything you’ve ever thrown away you can go and wave to at Hartland. From your diapers when you were a baby to that plastic bag last week.” Visitors to Hartland Happening will be able to take a guided bus tour of the landfill, and there will be info booths on site to learn about all the projects at Hartland. Kids will be able to play in a giant sandbox and see a live hawk up close. (The bird of prey is brought to the landfill nearly every day to scare away seagulls, preventing them from treating the active landfill site as an easy food source.) Hartland Happening aims to be a
zero-waste event, and encourages all visitors to bring a reusable water bottle. Napkins, plates and cutlery that will come with food sold at the event – courtesy of Mr. Tube Steak – are all compostable or recyclable. “Nothing used on the day will actually go up to the landfill,” Booth says. Parking at the landfill is limited, but the CRD offers a frequent shuttle bus service from parking lot 5 at Camosun College’s Interurban campus (4461 Interurban Rd.). Hartland Happening runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday (June 22) at 1 Hartland Ave. For event info, or to reserve a spot on a shuttle bus, visit crd. bc.ca/hartlandhappening.

Victoria aboriginal festival highlights growing industry Daniel Palmer News staff
The three-day Aboriginal Cultural Festival taking place in downtown Victoria this weekend is highlighting a thriving tourism industry in B.C., say organizers. B.C. is likely "leading the world" in aboriginal tourism development and the industry grew 22 per cent in 2013 alone, said Keith Henry, CEO of Aboriginal Tourism B.C. "People really want to know the story: what is the real history of this province before 1867," he said. "They also want to know the benefits are going back to the local communities as much as they can, and I think that driving force is really why aboriginal tourism is growing." Aboriginal Tourism B.C. numbers show the industry resulted in $45 million in direct spending last year. Henry and his colleagues returned earlier this month from a trade show in Shanghai, and they're working with nearly 150 First Nations to
develop tourism draws for their individual communities, Henry said. "We've got another 192 businesses in development. It's significant for jobs and for real revenues for the communities." Henry said the acceptance of tourism in some First Nations communities has been slow on the uptake, but many are realizing their culture can be presented honestly to the benefit of all. "There was (initially) a fear that maybe communities were commercializing their culture, but they see it can be done in a respectful manner," he said. Songhees Nation Chief Ron Sam, a sponsor of this weekend's festival, said he's never seen so much collaboration between provincial and regional partners to foster aboriginal tourism and to celebrate First Nations culture. "(This festival) is something I have wanted for a long time," he said. "There was the First Peoples festival that used to happen
in the Inner Harbour, and will happen again this year, but this event has included so much consultation. We want to make this an annual event." Sandy Pratt, the RBCM's vice president of business development, said the museum is hosting the festival on its grounds to support a "shared vision" of aboriginal partnership. The coinciding launch of the Royal B.C. Museum's Our Living Languages exhibition this weekend highlights the 203 First Nations, 34 languages and 61 distinct dialects that make up the collective B.C. aboriginal culture. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Landfill more than a ‘dump’
Who knew going through the trash could be so fascinating? It’s one thing to get your annual property tax bill, see the line for garbage collection, pay what you owe and forget about it until next year. But it’s an entirely different experience seeing exactly where your money goes by taking a tour of Hartland landfill. This is where every piece of garbage that’s thrown in the trash in the Capital Region – and has been thrown in the trash for the last several decades – ends up. But Hartland is not a dump. It used to be, back in the 1950s, a pit where you’d go and dump your trash. Now, this is an engineered, sanitary landfill. This weekend’s Hartland Happening event at the landfill is a great opportunity for our region’s residents to not only get a lesson on what happens to our garbage, but to appreciate just how the Capital Regional District is managing to reduce the environmental impact of the landfill on our land, in our water and in the air we breathe. That latter component of the landfill’s operations is quite impressive, and something we in Greater Victoria should be proud of. Not every landfill has procedures to prevent greenhouse gas emissions coming off the pile of garbage from entering the atmosphere, or screens that prevent rainwater from seeping through the soil and down deep into the rotting waste to become hazardous leachate. It’s also slowly returning to its former state as a native forest, thanks to a reforestation plan that will eventually see the entire landfill become – on the surface – nothing more than thriving plants and animals. With all the ongoing heated discussions surrounding the CRD’s future plans on managing and treating our liquid waste, it’s nice to see our solid waste is in really good hands.

Education is universal right Education radically changes the course of a child’s life. In Canada, we believe all Canadian children have the right to a quality education and that an educated population creates a thriving Canada. Around the world, 57,000,000 primary school aged children are not in school. Countries with higher primary schooling rates, for boys and girls, tend to enjoy greater democracy and stability. If our children have the right to a quality education then all children share this right. It also follows that if education supports democracy and stability, all countries will benefit from an educated population. The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) has successfully supported education for 22 million children in poor and conflictaffected countries. I urge our federal government to pledge generously to this organization because their model works. Our world future requires an educated population if we are to deal successfully with the challenges to come. Frances Beckow Victoria
To our victims: ‘It’s not you, it’s us’ Re: Aboriginal education or victim studies? (B.C. Views, May 21) This article by Tom Fletcher and the article in the same issue about
the Chinese head tax prompts me to say this to our victims – it’s not you, it’s us. We were rotten to everybody. We rejected a shipload of Jews desperately trying to evade the Holocaust, we treated our native people cruelly, we put a head tax on the Chinese and we incarcerated our Japanese citizens and I believe we rejected a ship from India once. You were a white Christian or you were dirt. The good news is we have grown since then and are now aware of how terrible we had treated our fellow humans and regret it deeply. Now let’s keep on growing. Andy Mulcahy Victoria
Indigenous people will have final say on pipeline Rigorous construction standards and management of any pipeline is a must. The assumption that there will be failures is also a must. A standing capacity to address major issues is a must. More importantly, my experience tells me that the only way for the Northern Gateway to be a safe pipeline is with transparency, trust, co-operation and investment among all stakeholders. Chief among the Northern Gateway’s stakeholders are the indigenous people of B.C. If the indigenous people of B.C. can be shown that the
Last Week
we asked you:
Northern Gateway pipeline is safe, economically valuable to them, and in their long term interest, then there is sufficient evidence for me to believe the pipeline can be built and operated safely. Conversely, if the indigenous people say in the end, ‘No’ then there is likely not enough management transparency to build a safe pipeline. Notwithstanding what I know about economics, incident management, and project management, the bottom-line for the fate of the Northern Gateway currently is – and should be – the judgment of the indigenous people of B.C. I stand with their “nay” or their “yah.” Transparency and trust among all stakeholders is the most critical litmus test of the safety of any major project. Eugene Parks Victoria

Esquimalt creates green space after removing Saxe Point house Structured destroyed despite pleas from community groups Kevin Laird News staff
The Township of Esquimalt began the process of demolishing a 70-year-old house at Saxe Point Park Wednesday to create more green space. “The residential structure in Saxe Point Park is owned by the township and was previously rented to private citizens,” said Scott Hartmann, director of parks and recreation services. “Failure of the property’s septic field in 2011 resulted in the structure being closed and the utilities disconnected.” The house contains asbestos and lead paint which will need to be removed before the house can be
dismantled. Mayor Barb Desjardins said community groups had come forward asking to take over the house for their own use. “We looked at renovating the house, but the costs would be significant just to bring the house up to (the Building) Code,” said Desjardins. Once the building is demolished, the township plans to use the existing space as additional green space and will consult with residents on the future use of the park. One proposal has the construction of a large pavillion to host weddings and community events. klaird@blackpress.ca

Open Letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper ARESST respectfully submits that approximately one billion dollars of federal-provincial-municipal taxes are on the verge of being committed to an unnecessary sewage project in the Capital Regional District of Victoria (CRD). Federal regulators have classified Victoria’s current marine-based treatment system as “high risk.” CRD’s monitoring reports of the ocean discharges show otherwise. For example:
✗❑ Substance concentrations near the outfalls are better than water quality guidelines
✗❑ Metal concentrations from the outfalls are less than EPA standards for drinking water
✗❑ Coliforms from the outfalls rapidly perish in the cold sea water ✗❑ Any risk to human health is low Further evidence that Victoria’s ocean discharges are low risk:
✗❑ The International Water Assn. reports (2010) ocean outfalls are “an economical and reliable strategy for waste-water disposal with minimal environmental impact”
✗❑ The World Health Organization, US National Research Council, and a British Royal Commission have concluded that ocean treatment of sewage is an acceptable, sometimes preferable, practice. (US Congress declared the evidence to be overwhelming) Victoria citizens walk, sail, windsurf, and fish along their pristine waterfront, but there has not been a single case of illness due to the nearby outfalls. This reality is consistent with the CRD’s findings of low risk. Because the high-risk classification is inappropriately based on a freshwater model, Canadians are being forced to spend a billion dollars to replace Victoria’s exemplary, low-impact marine-based treatment system with a higher-impact land-based system. We respectfully request that Victoria’s current treatment system receive a classification consistent with the evidence provided by the CRD, the Institute of Ocean Sciences, and regional medical health officers. *References to above claims available on request

“There haven’t been too many of those lately,” he joked, pressing harder on the metal, perhaps to make a point. As Infiniti Director of Performance, Vettel is truly playing a role in the development of future road products, rather than merely offering his name as a celebrity endorsement. He talked enthusiastically about the new compact, performance-oriented Q30, which should see the light late next year in Europe and a little later in Canada. The 328-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 Q50S we were riding in also benefitted from a little of his input. He’s clearly looking forward to Infiniti giving the go-ahead to the Q50 Eau Rouge concept, which features the Nissan GT-R’s growling 560-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Another corner loomed and I leaned into the door, as he barely slowed from the rapid pace we had zipped along the straight. “Your cornering has improved since last year,” I offered cheekily.
“Thank you, I think I’ve got the apexes about right,” he grinned. Hours earlier, it’s doubtful he had even heard of the tricky track, nevermind driven it. Harkening back to his references to happy endings, I reminded him that after driving with me last year he had enjoyed nothing but success. “That’s right . . . it’s all down to you,” he said with what I believed was a thoroughly genuine smile of appreciation. The end was nigh. Time flies when you are having fun: our hot lap and friendly chat took less than four minutes. Last Sunday, he enjoyed only his second podium finish of the year taking third place at the Montreal Grand Prix. You’re welcome, Seb. Same time next year, in the Eau Rouge? As Infiniti’s Director of Performance, Vettel is truly playing a role in the development of future road products.
Four-time F1 champ Sebastian Vettel got behind the wheel of a kart when he was just three-and-a-half years old and was racing at age eight. Should we encourage teens to follow that example, as a way of learning about vehicle speed and control before getting their first license at 16? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer. extends oil change intervals. The GT also comes with electric power-assist steering (EPAS), an upgraded braking system with vented discs all around and an enhanced suspension. GT buyers could also add a California Special appearance package and a Brembo brake and wheel package. A six-speed manual transmission was standard and automatic option was also a six-speed. This automatic has a grade-assist or “hill mode” feature that prevents sixth gear selection on a steep up-hill drive, plus engine braking going down a hill. There is another limited production edition of Mustang, the priciest and speediest pony of them all, the audacious Shelby GT500. Power comes from a supercharged 5.8-litre that can produce 650 horsepower and
it can also deliver over 600 ft-lb of tire-smoking torque. On the inside, a Mustang offers twoplus-two seating, which translates to limited leg and head room for the rear seat occupants. While Mustang’s trunk is not huge, it’s a little bigger and easier to access than the trunk in arch-rival Chevrolet Camaro. Both the coupe and the convertible editions of Mustang claim very good crash test safety ratings. Consumers Reports gives it “recommended buy” status and reliability has been average to better-than-average, with the V6 engine versions being slightly more dependable. The 2012 model year brought the re-introduction of a Boss 302 coupe edition, with a high-output 5.0-litre V8, plus a new premium trim level of the V6 edition. Selectable electric power-assisted steering, with comfort, sport and normal settings, also became standard on all models. The 2013 Mustang got lighting that is even more distinctive and some minor exterior tweaking. A new SelectShift Automatic transmission with a manual shift feature was a significant mechanical upgrade and the six-speed manual gearbox also gained a hill start assist feature. An iconic American car, the Ford Mustang offers classic styling yet can also be a reliable and reasonably priced used sports car and a great driving experience. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

The 2011 model year edition of the Ford Mustang, coupe and convertible, came with a more menacing frontal appearance and under the hood new engines produced more power with less fuel. So, you could also call it the “meaner and leaner” revamp. Appearance changes on the 2011 included new headlights and revised lower fascias, fenders and grille, plus a power-dome hood that allows additional air cooling to the Mustang’s new engines. At the back, new threelight LED lamps sequentially signal a turn, reminiscent of the muscle car years. The Mustang GT convertible models came with improved body rigidity with 12 per cent more lateral stiffness versus the previous year. In addition to newly strengthened structural members, under its hood you’ll also find a (race-style) tower-to-tower strut brace. Even the new base 3.7-litre V6 engine packs a punch as it can deliver 305 horsepower and can rev to 7000 rpm. Its rated city/highway fuel economy is an impressive 10.7/6.4 L/100km. And its power-to-weight ratio is almost double the previous base engine offering. Moving up a trim the Mustang GT has a 5.0-litre V8 under its hood. This engine is also a four-valve, all-aluminum engine, only this one is can pump-out 412 horsepower. And sounds great doing it! City/highway fuel consumption is rated at 11.8/7.9 L/100km and a larger (cast aluminum) oil pan also

Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the final part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford. The restoration story of Laura Ballance’s Mustang T5 has been interesting to follow and one that is not typical of this kind of project. Before I get carried away telling you what a T5 actually is, I have to report that with the help of the team at 360 Fabrication, suppliers White and Peters, BASF paint and the 200 plus hours of paint preparation, application, wet sanding and polishing by
master painter Darren Emmerson, the car is finished! And here is the best part, it’s on time and under budget, almost unheard of in days gone by let alone today. So what is so special about a T5 Mustang? – The Ford Mustang could not be sold in Germany as a Mustang because a truck manufacturer there and later a motorcycle manufacturer owned the trademarked name Mustang. Both manufacturers offered to sell the rights to Ford for $10,000 each but Ford declined and decided the solution would be to use the initial Mustang project name T5 as the solution. With all of the changes required, they should have probably paid the Follow us at:

$10,000. With there being so many U.S. armed forces bases in Germany, export models were highly sought after. Laura had no idea how rare her car was until she decided to embark on this project and began doing her research. The T5 registry has informed Laura that of the 453 Mustang Hardtop T5s built in 1967, hers is one of the few examples ordered with a vinyl roof, which is listed as an option in the V.I.N tag. There are only two T5s known to exist in Canada, hers and one in Ontario and only 45 have survived in various states of condition worldwide. It is going to be a busy
summer for Laura, her two daughters and the Mustang. I suspect her father never in his wildest dreams would have thought the car would end up as a show car let alone become a family affair involving three generations of his family. The T5 will debut at the Vancouver Classic Car Show and Auction at the PNE on June 21 and 22. Then it will head south in July to the Mustang Roundup in Bellevue, Washington, the world’s largest Mustang meet. The car is entered in the Concours restoration class and should place well. Because this is the 50th anniversary of the Mustang the invitations are pouring in, the most recent one from an event in North Carolina, Laura still has a day job so unfortunately will miss that one. She will finish the summer off at the Luxury SuperCar weekend at VanDusen Gardens in September. The car will be viewed at least 30 or 31 times in a month, gracing the walls of garages and repair shops all over North America featured in a 2015 Ford calendar. This completes a restoration project with a happy conclusion. nmatthews@hagerty.com
Your classic car could be: ‘Going once, going twice, sold!’
The 2014 Vancouver Collector Car Show & Auction, presented by the Dueck Auto Group, is now accepting consignment applications for those looking to sell their cars. New at this year’s event, June 21 to 22 at the PNE Fairgrounds, is an auction preview, open only to the auction’s registered bidders and consigners. This event will allow sellers to show their vehicles and mingle with bidders before the auction. If you have an awesome car that you want to show off but don’t want to sell, they too can be displayed at the show for free. Horse therapy helps many with special needs Young Victoria girl learns ropes at equestrian centre Travis Paterson News staff
In true World Cup spirit, Taz was up to his soccer playing tricks on Wednesday. The 22-year-old pony can still gallop, an impressive feat for the senior citizen that he is. But it’s nothing compared to the mean game of soccer he still possesses. A visitor to Forward Equestrian and Wellness Centre passes him his red soccer ball, which is one metre in diameter. He not only tracks it down gently, acutely aware of five-yearold Lillith Rosenberg, a Victoria resident, on his back, but he also returns the pass with authority. This horse can play. “Walk on now Taz,” commands Lillith, as the old
boy leaves the ball behind and trots her around the arena at the Saanich centre, which focuses on equineassisted therapy, equestrian lessons, training and related programs for children and adults with autism or brain injuries. Forward is run by Rebecca Phillips. “We use evidence-based techniques to help people become grounded with the animals by connecting with a living being,” Phillips said. Several types of therapists are brought in for occupation and physical services, and all have equine experience to help visitors connect. Forward offers a variety of programs, including lessons for the public and Hoofbeats, an early childhood education program where preschoolers can get outside and interact with

Lillith came to Forward two months ago, and is now a regular at the Wilkinson Road ranch. When she’s there, she is no longer an autistic five-year-old struggling to fit in with others
her age. Instead, she’s a comfortable kid who can let go of the unique fears that come with autism, such as the feeling of long grass, which she’ll happily rip out of the ground and feed to Taz, says mom Cassie
City square celebrates with music, festivals Dan Palmer News staff
Centennial Square is bursting with musical acts all summer beginning with the 30th annual TD VIctoria International Jazz Festival. Check out Murray Porter and the 24th Street Wailers at the open-air stage for $25 on June 28, and grab lunch and take in some free music from July 2 to Sept. 11, noon to 1 p.m. The eventide music series begins July 3 and runs until Aug. 14 with musical samples ranging from electro gypsy to twee folk. All concerts run Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Weekend festivals abound in Centennial Square all summer long as well. There’s Festival Mexicano, July 11 to 13 (victoriamexicancanadian.org), Victoria Tango and Latin Arts Festival, July 31 to Aug. 3 (passion4tango. com), Victoria India MELA festival, Aug. 8 to 10 (iccavictoria.ca) and the Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival, Aug. 20, to name a few. Hooker. “Bringing Lillith here is like nothing else,” Cassie says. “She talks about it all week; asking, ‘When can I ride Taz?’” In contrast, if Lillith is walking in her downtown North Park neighbourhood she’ll make a detour to avoid a seedy sidewalk dandelion. “Her confidence has increased tenfold since riding here; she’s almost nonautistic when here,” says dad, Keith Rosenberg. As parents of an autistic child under age six, Keith and Cassie qualify for $22,000 towards therapy and other programs for Lillith. It still leaves them short of the necessary funds to put Lillith into the nature- and equine-based kindergarten at Forward in September. “We want to set her up here for life,” Keith says. The parents are about to get another $22,000 for
their second child, threeyear-old Colin, who has also been diagnosed with autism. Colin, too, is excited to get on a horse. There are 17 horses at Forward, all of them with skills that help the animals adapt to the special needs of individual riders. “This is only my second time on Sookie, but she’s starting to adapt to me,” said rider Kim Scott, 19. Having cerebral palsy can make it hard to ride a horse, but the horses at Forward are patient, she says. Scott’s regular horse, Adam, is taking a break to regain his strength, but they’ll soon train together again and are scheduled to return to national level para-equestrian competition this summer. In addition, Scott says Adam helped her manage her mental health, part of her generalized anxiety treatment at Forward. editor@vicnews.com

Q: WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER BEFORE PURSUING A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE?
Do you have enough savings to cover your learning curve? – It’s recommended that new agents have two years’ income put away when they start in the business.
In any industry, it’s natural for people who’ve been around for a long time to feel they have the edge on someone new to the business. In real estate sales, the same scenario applies. But is it as simple as saying experience is everything? Perhaps not. Technology has definitely changed the way Realtors do business, especially from the standpoint of forwarding information about new listings to potential buyers, or moving the appropriate paperwork back and forth between agents and legal professionals. But some things haven’t changed, say Deborah and Roy Coburn, a husband and wife team who have been in the business for 26 and 24 years, respectively. “We’re a person-to-person service,” Deborah says. “That’s always the way we’ve operated.” While she admits most buyers today get their first glimpse of a home online, she says, it still comes down to working with clients in person to really get a handle on their real estate needs. She cites three separate out-oftown client couples who found “the perfect home” online in Greater Victoria, only to arrive and discover in a showing that the property wasn’t at all what they had in mind or envisioned. “In some ways, technology can only go so far,” she says. While many listing agents send information on homes to buyer’s agents via email, Roy finds it helpful to pick up the phone and call

Are you a selfstarter? – If you’re good at time management and don’t mind doing a lot of legwork before getting paid, you may be right for the profession.
Do you like to learn? – The education process for Realtors is ongoing and mandatory. Courses on a variety of topics are regularly offered by the Victoria Real Estate Board.

Deborah and Roy Coburn have been selling real estate more than 20 years. While technology has changed the way Realtors operate, they stress the importance of face-to-face communication. his counterparts to chat about “the nuances of a home” that one might not pick up in a photo. At the other end of the scale, Taylor McMullen, 24, is in his fifth month as an agent. He’s enjoyed some success already, partially due to building a new Internet marketing program for himself and his father, longtime Victoria-area Realtor Michael McMullen. Taylor, who also speaks Mandarin, has tapped into the Asian immigrant market, largely through his online work. In that respect, he views technology as something not to be feared, but to be embraced, a characteristic he says he shares with other younger professionals. “I think the difference between (younger and older Realtors) is

we grew up in a period of change. Everything is changing so quickly and we’re easily able to adapt to change,” he says. “There’s still lots of risk-takers out there, but I’d say the average young person is more likely to take risks and change.” While taking full advantage of technology to secure and work with clients can work well, McMullen admits it’s just one tool at his disposal. But he admits much of his business has come from referrals, door knocking and cold calling: good oldfashioned personal contact. “Real estate’s all about relationships. The majority of your business will come from referrals no matter how much marketing you do,” he says. The Coburns couldn’t agree more.
Deborah chuckles at a fringe strategy making the rounds lately, that of giving home evaluations without setting foot on a person’s property. Whether representing clients looking to buy or sell, agents’ responsibility is huge, she says, given the need to know everything about a house. “When it comes down to it, it still requires a relationship with us.” One thing agents of any age may find today more so than in past years, McMullen says, is that younger buyers tend to be less patient and more focused on saving money than being loyal. “I find younger people are always chasing the better deal or the quick response (from a Realtor). You’ve got to be so quick with everything.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com

CRD park patrols increase for summer Arnold Lim News staff
Visitors to regional parks will be seeing a little more black and blue through the summer. The Capital Regional District and West Shore RCMP are co-operating on a joint program to increase enforcement at Thetis Lake, Matheson Lake and Witty’s Lagoon. The goal for the increased presence is to curb bylaw violations and alcohol use in regional parks, especially at the popular beaches during peak times of year. “We are working towards promoting the positive use of the parks, deterring alcohol and drug use in the parks, making sure people are being safe around water and abiding by the rules of the park,” said West Shore RCMP Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz. “(It is) to ensure everyone has an enjoyable experience and it’s a positive environment to be in.” This year marks the fourth summer for the partnership, which sees the RCMP and CRD share information and run additional mountain bike, foot and boat patrols. Rochlitz said it’s a way to engage the public, inform with education and enforce when needed. editor@vicnews.com

Should we encourage teens to follow that example, as a way of learning about vehicle speed and control before getting their first license at 16? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer. Safety Tip: As schools begin their summer break, there will be more children around the roads. Road safety is not always top of mind for kids, so make sure you pay extra attention, especially around playgrounds where speed limits remain in effect year-round.

The focus of Driveway’s recent four-part collector car restoration series was unveiled this week at 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford earlier this week. The 1967 Ford Mustang T5, owned by public relations executive Laura Ballance, will take pride of place first at an exclusive preview for the second annual Vancouver Collector Car Show & Auction. Then it will go on public display at this weekend’s event at the PNE Fairgrounds, where more than 600 vintage vehicles will be on display and nearly 150 classic rides will go on Maynard’s auction block. Some other show highlights: a bright ‘A&W orange’ 1966 Plymouth Satellite will be auctioned off with no fees, no reserve, and 100 percent of the proceeds going to the MS Society of Canada. The duPont Registry is bringing eight ultra-rare vehicles from across the Lower Mainland for the first ever duPont Series – including J.D. Rockefeller’s Lincoln Town Car Limo. The Vancity Stunters will be performing motorcycle stunts and Barracuda, the Heart tribute band, will be rock out on Saturday night. If you want to check out the restoration process for the T5 and view a photo gallery, you can do so at Drivewaycanada.ca keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

BLACK PRESS GREATER VICTORIA- Friday, June 20, 2014
Zoom-Zoom goes flash and boom Zack Spencer
With a flash of lightning beside our car, my co-pilot Alexandra Straub let out a screech as loud as the accompanying crack from the massive flash. Pouring rain in our tiny car made the very first day of the 2014 Mazda rally one to remember. The Mazda MX-5 (Miata) is a car most would associate with sunny, summer top-down driving but this little machine was determined to show what it was made of. The howling wind, torrential rain and debris-covered roads were all taken in stride as we carved our way through the Tennessee mountains on our way to the Brasstown Valley Resort in neighboring Georgia. Over the next three days, we experienced the MX-5 on some of the most dramatic and scenic roads this continent has to offer, and there was money on the line, big money. Last year was the inaugural Mazda Rally, which Alexandra and I won, taking home $10,000 in charity money for Kidsport. As last year’s champions, we had extra pressure this year to repeat, something we later found out would be much
tougher than we had imagined. If you ever take a drive through the south east of the United States, do yourself a favour and divert away from the interstate highway system and experience driving nirvana, traversing the Blue Ridge, Unico and Smokey Mountain ranges. The lush National and State parks along with small towns and twisting river valleys is something to experience. This is a destination for drivers too, especially the “Tail of the Dragon”, a section of highway
129, just inside the North Carolina border that has 318 turns over an 18km stretch. This is a favourite of motorcycle riders but it is open to anyone wanting to experience back-to-back corners ranging from very tight to wide, sweeping turns. Our run up this road was wide open thanks to steady rain, with a few dozen motorcyclists out for a tour and several photographers taking pictures, then selling them to tourist, the same way you can buy a picture of your rollercoaster ride at the PNE!
paper but, in practice, it makes the most of every situation. One thing Mazda’s event planners has us do was drive and collect information for each days challenges. All of these were kept secret until the beginning of each drive, including the roads we might travel. A surprise was that some sections were unpaved. Taking Mazda’s brand new MX-5 through forest back-roads at speed, meant rocks flying, branches felled from the previous night’s storm kicking up, sliding sideways through corners and pounding over rough and rutted gravel. At the end, the MX-5 showed no signs of wear; it just powered on to the next challenge, which was another surprise, the Atlanta Motorsports Park for an autocross challenge. To say we went from one extreme to the other is an understatement. An hour earlier I was sliding across
Paved roads are the place the MX-5 shines, There is so much wet or dry. It never felt like the car was out of goodness dialled into this control, even on the fast- little car that it rewards the est and most aggressive driver and passenger hourcorners. There is so much after-hour. goodness dialled into this little car that it rewards The small, light, thrifty dithe driver and passenger hour-after-hour. With a front mensions matched to a raspy engine, rear drive setup and 2.0L 4-cylinder and 6-speed perfect weight distribution, the manual makes for a fantastic MX-5 has been one of my all- power-to-weight distribution, time favourite cars because of meaning the 160hp engine might not sound like much on its simplicity.

gravel roads, followed by sliding around a racetrack trying to avoid pylons to dial in my best lap time. As it turns out I did get the second best time of the event but one of those pylons got in the way, knocking down my time by two seconds, all part of the challenge’s rules. Over the three-day event, Alexandra and I didn’t have one disagreement, I made some navigational errors and so did she. We let it roll, these were long days and we hoped a few small glitches wouldn’t impact our score too much. We also missed one major clue in our guidebook, one that was worth a whopping 50 points. At the end, we had slipped from second place after the first day to fifth place. Sadly, next year we won’t be able to proudly display the number one on the side of our Black Press car. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

The Supercar: It’s something anyone of any age can appreciate. The design. The engineering. The way the engine and exhaust purrs – or roars – when you push on the throttle. They are the culmination of the workmanship of talented individuals who dedicate their lives to crafting components that are then distributed globally. rendezvous in Whistler. Fellow motorists were pleasantly surprised when they spotted the exotics driving beside them on the world famous road. My ride? – The humble, all new, BMW M4. I say humble because I had nowhere near as much horsepower (this only generates 425) as some, or most, of my fellow drivers. But what I did have was the “wow” factor. Clad in an extremely eye-catching Austin Yellow Metallic coat, she was quite the sight to see. What made it even more special? It’s a 6-speed manual. Unsuspecting admirers didn’t catch me overhearing their conversations including, “Dude, this one’s a stick. Awesome.” Yes, some people actually talk like that. Though it may not have garnered nearly as much attention as some of my fellow rallyers, it still brought smiles to people’s faces.
That’s what I think the event is all about. So did the drive route. Craig Stowe, Founder of the Diamond Rally and Canada’s own Luxury & Supercar Weekend mentions, “There is a new breed of supercar owners who are rallying together to individually raise awareness and money for the charity of their choice.” He also comments that Vancouver is supercar crazy, and that there are more luxury and supercars per capita then any other city in North America . “There is nothing like 111 spectacular cars rallying up the 99 highway to bring awareness to many worthy charities.” Visit www.bmw.ca for more information on the 2015 M4 Coupe. BLACK PRESS GREATER VICTORIA- Friday, June 20, 2014
The mean, lean, Mustang machine Bob McHugh
The 2011 model year edition of the Ford Mustang, coupe and convertible, came with a more menacing frontal appearance and, under hood, new engines produced more power with less fuel. So, you could also call it the “meaner and leaner” revamp. Appearance changes on the 2011 included new headlights and revised lower fascias, fenders and grille, plus a power-dome hood that allows additional air cooling to the Mustang’s new engines. At the back, new three-light LED lamps sequentially signal a turn, reminiscent of the muscle car years. And its power-to-weight ratio is almost double the previous

base engine offering. Moving up a trim the Mustang GT has a 5.0-litre V8 under its hood. This engine is also a four-valve, all-aluminum engine, only this one is can pump-out 412 horsepower. And sounds great doing it! City/highway fuel consumption is rated at 11.8/7.9 L/100km and a larger
brake and wheel package. A six-speed manual transmission was standard and automatic option was also a six-speed. This automatic has a grade-assist or “hill mode”
feature that prevents sixth gear selection on a steep up-hill drive, plus engine braking going down a hill. There is another limited production edition of Mustang, the
priciest and speediest pony of them all, the audacious Shelby GT500. Power comes from a supercharged 5.8-litre that can produce 650 horsepower and it can also deliver over 600 ft-lb of tire-smoking torque. On the inside, a Mustang offers two-plus-two seating, which translates to limited leg and head room for the rear seat occupants. The 2012 model year brought the re-introduction of a
Boss 302 coupe edition, with a high-output 5.0-litre V8, plus a new Premium trim level of the V6 edition. Selectable electric power-assisted steering, with Comfort, Sport and Normal settings, also became standard on all models. The 2013 Mustang got lighting that is even more distinctive and some minor exterior tweaking. A new SelectShift Automatic transmission with a manual shift feature was a significant mechanical upgrade and the 6-speed manual gearbox also gained a Hill Start Assist feature. An iconic American car, the Ford Mustang offers classic styling yet can also be a reliable and reasonably priced used sports car and a great driving experience. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
