Unless the teachers strike is suddenly settled students at John Robson elementary won’t get to say goodbye to their school before it’s bulldozed. Robson will be leveled this summer to make way for the new Fraser River middle school. The students will be transferred to the new Qayqayt elementary, expected to open in September. Serena Trachta, chair of the Robson parent advisory council, said if the strike lasts until the end of the school year the students won’t get a chance to go through the grieving process of losing a building they learned and lived in for almost 200 days a year. “It sounds superficial but at this elementary school age it’s a significant development to form attachments like that. The others will be marked by senior staff, principals and vice principals. All Grade 12 students will get report cards and they will have all of their marks regardless if they were taking grades 10, 11 or 12 level courses. “But if we don’t get back soon, we will not have report cards for our K to 11 students. That is difficult. It’s still being debated at the Labour Relations Board as to the Grade 10 and 11s, but

certainly our students in K to Grade 9 will not be receiving a report card if there is no resolution,” said Gaiptman. He added summer school plans are still underway and students wanting to go should enrol. But the district is still waiting to see if they’ll be allowed to hold summer school. If there’s a quick settlement it will be a challenge for the district to get up and running on short notice. In the Reference Department, Colleen Harrington presents her show Ravens with Roses. The focus of the show is the watercolour birds, which were inspired by the ravens of London. Her 3-dimensional roses provide colour and contrast to the black of the birds. The art can be viewed at any time during library open hours. New Westminster’s draft master transportation plan (MTP) aims to increase the number of walkers, cyclists and transit users in New West, while not adding any regional traffic to its streets. After more than two years of open houses and analysis, the draft was revealed to city council Monday. It puts feet at the top of its transportation hierarchy followed by bicycles, transit, commercial vehicles and cars. “This plan addresses a lot of the issues that surround transportation in New Westminster. Certainly there are no easy solutions to the transportation issues in New Westminster,” said MTP task force co-chair Coun. Jonathan Coté. The 228-page MTP sets a goal of at least 50 per cent of all trips in New Westminster being by foot, bicycle or transit by 2031 and 60 per cent by 2041. Currently there are about 167,000 local trips per day made by New West residents by those modes of transportation. If the trend were to continue it would increase to 250,000 by 2041, and local car trips would remain stable at about 100,000. The plan is counting on no additional through traffic because reducing regional car trips is part of TransLink’s strategy. The report admits the city will have to work closely with other municipalities and jurisdictions to make sure New West doesn’t get any more traffic than it

does today. The city aims to reduce the average distance travelled by car by a third to approximately 6.5 km per day by 2041. A 2011 estimate had residents driving 10km a day. Three quarters of the city’s streets have sidewalks, about 255 kilometres’ worth. The plan calls for filling in the gaps with priority going to streets close to schools, SkyTrain stations, parks and within the Downtown core and other areas with lots of pedestrians.

It suggested more sidewalk maintenance, repaving, improving surface quality, widening sidewalks, increasing accessibility, building boulevards and buffers between pedestrians and vehicles, and removing obstructions. Building areas that promote pedestrian usage is another of the plan’s policies. “Pocket parks and plazas, enhanced landscaping, public art, street trees, litter and recycling bins, benches, curb extensions, weather protection, and pedestrian-scale street lighting are examples of good public realm features,” said the report. Cycling accounts for one per cent of trips in New Westminster, most averaging less than five kilometres. They’d achieve that with more buses, a light rail line that would eventually connect Langley City, via Newton, to the Expo SkyTrain line in Surrey, an extension of the Millennium Line to Arbutus with further expansion to UBC in the future. They also pledged improvements to the HandyDart and SeaBus services, as well as the construction of new four-lane toll bridge to replace the Pattullo. Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan voted against the plan. He called it a “wish list” that was overly “ambitious.” Unless the provincial government gets on board with the plan and makes some tough decisions to see at least some of it to fruition, it might never be worth the reams of paper it’s printed on. To pay for the plan, the mayors want the province to implement a tolling system in which motorists pay to travel anywhere in the region, whether or not they cross a bridge. That would generate enough revenue to allow TransLink to reduce its gas tax from 17 cents to 11 cents per litre. So far Premier Christy Clark hasn’t commented on the mayors’ proposals. She seems to be hedging transit’s future on the outcome of a referendum that still hasn’t got a date, or even a defined question. The mayors had the right idea to present an integrated, comprehensive plan for transit in Metro Vancouver. It’s time for the provincial government to put the wheels in motion to begin realizing it. Otherwise it will just end up costing us more to keep building bigger roads.

From lockdown to circle time Last Tuesday morning, Janet Grant got a phone call from her boss John Gaiptman, New West’s superintendent of schools. Grant, SD40’s director of instruction, was told Alissa Arnold’s French immersion kindergarten class from Lord Tweedsmuir elementary was at Science World, which was now in lockdown. Earlier, a man had been shot in Yaletown. There’d been an exchange of gunfire with police and he’d fled on a bike. Further along, outside Science World, more bullets flew, leaving the shooter and an officer injured. On Twitter, people shared photos of the injured lying on the pavement, police vehicles, yellow tape. A dramatic scene, from a distance. Grant was asked to help coordinate the response at Tweedsmuir. As she would later learn, the adults opened the door to exit Science World and were about to guide the group of five and six years olds onto the plaza when they heard gunshots. They quickly rushed back inside, where they huddled in the gift shop, away from the windows.

Meantime, at Tweedsmuir, principal Patti Farris had a visitor, school police liaison officer Const. Carmel Keenan. At their meeting they were discussing, among other things, lockdown protocols. Arnold’s first call came from the gift shop: Science World was in full lockdown. The kids were all safe. Over the next hour or so, Arnold called frequently with updates, aware that parents who had heard the news would be anxious. “She was a star through the whole thing,” Grant told me. “I cannot say enough about this teacher.” Later, Arnold called to say the kids had been moved into the theatre, where they were watching Journey to the South Pacific and enjoying popcorn. At such a tender age, how

much did they understand what was happening? That’s a mystery. Meanwhile, back in New West, a team of people were preparing for the students’ return. “We didn’t want our response to make them think they should be upset,” said Grant. Counsellors from other schools were called in to help. As parents arrived to pick up their kids, they were ushered into the learning centre for a briefing with Jane Osborne, a middle school counsellor. Another counsellor was ready in case Mme. Arnold or Val Keith, the educational assistant who accompanied the field trip, needed support upon their return. Having held it together throughout the incident, they might feel an emotional whiplash when it was over. In the learning centre, parents were urged to project calm to their children. As Ms. Farris would say in the letter sent home to all parents later in the day, it was best to avoid media coverage and not probe about the incident. If your child brings it up, by all means respond, but don’t unduly inflate their experience.

“I think our sense was right,” Grant said, “that parents might be more traumatized… as they knew the full extent of the situation.” Another concern: What if the media swooped in with cameras and microphones just as the kids arrived in their school bus? Grant anticipated this, and police were there to keep media at bay (which might have raised anxiety in itself, but perhaps was lesser of two evils). When the children arrived back at school, the ever-calm Ms. Farris, who retires this month, greeted them. The students and parents who accompanied them returned to their class, as they would normally do. Food and drinks were awaiting them, as the lockdown meant they’d missed lunch. Many were grateful for that. And then one girl said, ‘Hey, Madame Arnold, what about my show and tell?” So she called the kids over to the carpet, and they all participated in a routine they practise every day in their kindergarten class. Why not do it here? I’ve just returned from my first visit to New York. We spent the week on Manhattan Island and still didn’t see all the sites. What I did see was the restoration of many small theatres and the building of skyscrapers around these theatres. I ask the question, how can the New York architects and politicians find ways to build around and save these old theatres and keep them in the city’s inventory, when the architects and politicians here in New Westminster can’t find a way to save Massey Theatre? I took in a show at the Broadway Theater built in 1924—now surrounded by a skyscraper. Saw The David Letterman Show at the old Ed Sullivan Theater, built in 1927, which still has the castiron ticket booth in the lobby, surrounded by a skyscraper. And I saw many more theatres saved from the wrecking ball. Residents of New West want

a new high school—and sooner, not later. And many are concerned with the possible burial sites under the Pearson wing of the high school. But getting back to New York… Manhattan was home to the Lenni-Lanape Nation of Indians, and was bought from them by the Dutch for approximately 60 guilder. The First Nations are not forgotten in Manhattan—the name itself is a derivative of a Munsee Indian name Manna-hata. New York has the National Museum of the American Indian right on the island. New Westminster has put up $6 million to the school district for added seating capacity in the new theatre to be incorporated into the new school. Why can’t we build around the Massey Theatre, saving the cost to build a new theatre, retaining all the fly system and backstage space (not in the new plans) needed to put on

noteworthy events and shows and take the $6 million from the city and build a space dedicated to the history and people from the past, at the Pearson wing. The Pearson site has had an army base and high school on that ground for many years. There may not be anything left to find on the site. Have an archaeologist and First Nations on site and collect what is found. New Westminster could have the only space in the Lower Mainland dedicated to preserving the First Nations language, literature, history and art, and give the students a place to study New Westminster’s First Nations history. The other parents were quietly ushered in from the learning centre and stood at the edges of the room. “We wanted the children to have an end to the day that was very natural and normal,” said Grant. A friend of mine was one of those parents. When show and tell was done, he walked up to his son and casually said “How was your day, buddy?” And he heard about the wonderful things kids learn at Science World. About gravity and how rollercoasters work. And they even got to watch a movie. Exactly the kinds of things that should happen when you go to a place like that. As for transit, the MTP recommends the city explore creating a free shuttle service between Downtown and Uptown in conjunction with the business improvement areas in those neighbourhoods or other partners. The draft plan said New Westminster should work with TransLink to increase peak period service on Twelfth Street, Sixth and Eighth avenues and East Columbia. The city would also like to improve peak period service in Queensborough, Fraserview and Victoria Hill. The MTP said Sixth, Eighth, Twelfth, Columbia and East Columbia streets and Sixth and Eighth avenues should be priorities for transit to reduce

The MTP also trumpeted the concept of Great Streets, places for people to be instead of being only places to move through. Great Streets would have features that make them more comfortable to walk, rest and be active along as well as more attractive. The MTP identifies Twelfth, Sixth, Columbia and East Columbia streets and Eighth and Ewen avenues as potential Great Streets. The MTP says right now the balance in some of those corridors favours motor vehicles. To change that around the plan recommends better pedestrian crossings, wider sidewalks, resting places, lighting, boulevards, public art and even streetcars on Columbia.

The MTP suggested timeframes of two to five years to develop many of the projects, although the ideas for goods movement are long-term projects. “This is a wish list, but in many respects it’s only a wish list in relation to how hard we work to convince people this is the right thing to do,” said Harper. “You have to make it really easy for people to get out of their cars. Either that or make gas $3 a litre.” A final open house on the draft plan is to be held next week, although no time or place has been announced. The final draft will also go to other agencies such as TransLink and adjacent municipalities for comment. Final adoption is expected in September.

BUILT-IN VALUE

You can feel your voice get deeper when you climb aboard this big guy. The 2014 Chevy Silverado HD I tested recently featured a 6.6-litre Duramax Turbo V8 diesel engine, mated to an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission, capable of putting out 397 horses and provides 765 lb ft of torque. It gets deeper. This guy can carry up to 1706 kg and tow up to 8119 kg. And the truck box has load-bearing upper hooks rated to hold 113 kg each.

Interior The interior is very well organized, comfortable leather 12-way front bucket seats that are heated and cooled. The rear seats are a 60/40 split. Heavy use of dark wood burl is very prominent and gives the truck a different level of sophistication. The navigation screen is positioned perfectly and is easy to program without distracting you from the road. Steering wheel controls help with radio functions and incoming phone calls. The dash could have been better, lots of plastic and not that appealing.

RAV4

Safety There is a single-stage driver and front passenger airbag. An OnStar protection service is available, and offers direct communications between emergency services and the vehicle. An electronic immobilizer is standard equipment and prevents the vehicle from being started without the key. Forward collision alert, lane departure warning and safety alert driver seat are all standard.

The steering is direct and responsive and makes driving a large truck very easy. There is no fighting the steering wheel—a problem with other trucks in this category. The cab is quiet with little road or tire noise. The diesel engine is a little noisy but not a big concern. The EZ lift tailgate is a nice feature, especially opening with one hand.

Towing Capability This vehicle can tow up 8,119 kg and combined with the improved trailer sway control makes towing enjoyable. The stabilitrak control system can sense if your trailer is swaying and help control it by combining the power of the engine and the braking system to keep the trailer under control. The rearview camera is a nice touch helping to align the trailer during hookup. Hill start assist is a good feature and helps prevent you from rolling back on a hill by maintaining brake pressure until the engine delivers enough torque to move the truck up the hill.

A New Westminster drummer is marching into history. John Briggs, who works at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus, is in England with the Vancouver Police Pipe Band which is participating in the venerable changing of the Queen’s guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. It’s the first time a nonmilitary band has performed in the ceremony, which has been a daily tradition in London for 350 years. “It is literally the most incredible experience I’ve ever had,” said Briggs, who’s played in pipe bands for almost 50 years. “Nothing will ever top this in my life for sure.”

The band is scheduled to participate in four ceremonies at Buckingham Palace and two at

Windsor Castle during its time in England. The band was also given

the opportunity to play in the forecourt at St. James Palace as the Queen’s guards who are

completing their 24-hour shift formed up for the eight-minute march down The Mall to Buckingham Palace. That’s the first time a pipe band has played in the forecourt since the St. James Palace was built as the London residence for King Henry VIII in 1536, explained Briggs in an email. Normally the military bands only start playing when the march off down The Mall commences. “There are thousands of people lining the streets every day to see this,” said Briggs. To stay in step for its official duties, on Monday the band marched from Wellington Barracks, near Buckingham Palace, to Green Park where it lay a wreath at the Canadian War Memorial. Scott McAlpine is no longer president of Douglas College. Dave Taylor, a spokesman for the post-secondary institution, said McAlpine has left the college to pursue other opportunities. Taylor said McAlpine was not fired by the board of directors. MCALPINE “Dr. McAlpine has made significant contributions over the last five years during which time Douglas College has seen considerable growth,” said Taylor. “We all wish him the best in his endeavours.” Taylor said Kathy Denton, vice-president of academics, will take over on an interim basis until a replacement can be found. McAlpine, 57, was hired in August 2009. The Waterloo, Ont., native came to Douglas after 20 years at Grande Prairie Regional College in Alberta where he’d risen from political science instructor to vice-president. He has a PhD from

the University of Calgary. He replaced Susan Witter, who retired after 12 years at Douglas.

Anvil Centre opens Sept. 14 The grand opening of the Anvil Centre civic facility in Downtown New Westminster will be held Sunday, Sept. 14. The opening of the Anvil Centre, which had a $41.5 million price tag, will run from noon to 6 p.m. with the official ribbon cutting at 1:30 p.m. The centre has space for conferences, a 364-seat theatre, a new media gallery, the city museum and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The city has also announced the Wait for Me Daddy War Memorial statue will be unveiled at Hyack Square at 11 a.m. on Oct. 4. It’s a bronze sculpture based on an iconic photo taken at that spot almost 75 years ago. Canada Post will launch its Wait for Me Daddy commemorative stamp that day. The city museum will also have a Wait for Me Daddy exhibit.

Nanaimo’s Melissa Tolsma describes herself as a “reluctant renovator.” If something isn’t broken, there’s no need to fix it, and duct tape can fix anything that is broken. However, when she saw the opportunity to enter last year’s Reno Me! with FortisBC contest and win $10,000 towards a renovation with natural gas, she decided that her outdoor space could use a bit of sprucing up. After winning the contest, her renovation adventure began. Tolsma notes that she’s always cold, so having the warmth of natural gas was tops on her priority list. Currently, one of the most popular options

that use natural gas is a fire pit, which will be an integral part of Tolsma’s renovation and something she is particularly looking forward to. “My eight-year-old daughter is very excited about having a year-round s’mores facility right in the backyard!” Tolsma says. Tolsma’s cast concrete fire pit, from Solus Decor, is expected to arrive soon, and contractor Brad Fraser of Jonker Custom Building has been hard at work. “Brad is working on two cedar benches to be installed next to the fire pit,” Tolsma says. “I’ve had fun spending way too much time on Houzz, gathering ideas and images that have really helped to shape the project.” The fire pit is just the beginning of Tolsma’s ongoing outdoor space renovation. “I’m going to have my licensed gas contractor extend the gas line to accommodate a gas barbecue and heater in the future,” says Tolsma.
