Wine and beer samplings/sales approved for farmers’ markets
VIEW FROM ABOVE
Scott Stanfield Record Staff
Changes to liquor laws have added a new twist to farmers’ markets in B.C., as vendors can now host beer and wine booths for samplings and sales. “That would be exactly the kind of direction that we were hoping for,” said Comox Business In Action co-ordinator Holly Grant, who works with the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market Association to co-ordinate a Thursday market in Comox. The revised liquor laws came into effect Saturday. The decision to allow beer, wine, cider and spirits will be up to local market associations. “The Comox Valley is home to many excellent farmers’ markets that I believe will help cultivate a responsible and cultured approach to the sale and consumption of craft beer and cider,” local MLA Don McRae said in a news release. “Vendors have helped us develop an appreciation for the benefits of fresh, local produce and
they’ll take the same approach to spirits, beer and wine.” The Comox Valley Farmers’ Market is held Saturdays at the exhibition grounds in Courtenay from April to October. It switches to the Native Sons Hall in fall and winter. A mid-week summer market which started last year in downtown Courtenay begins Wednesday, July 2 on England Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets. Thursday night summer markets began last week on Comox Avenue. They are held on the third Thursday of the month in summer. There is also a Sunday street market planned for Aug. 3 during Nautical Days. Other changes in liquor legislation include the introduction of “happy hours,” removal of beer garden and festival barriers, and the support of liquor manufacturers by cutting red tape on licensing. There are also new dining options that allow children into pubs and legions that choose to be family-friendly.

Siblings connect, more than six decades later Cumberland senior only discovers she has a brother after death of their father Renee Andor Record Staff
The day Dave Minns found his father was the same day he found out his father had died. But, it was also the day he found out he had family in Canada and, particularly, a sister in Cumberland. Cumberland’s Joan Foley, 65, laughs and smiles constantly while she chats via Skype with her brother Dave, 70, and his wife Pat, 72, who live halfway across the world in Yorkshire, England. “You have to remember, Joan, I’m the oldest aren’t I?” Dave asks Joan with a big grin. “Yes, you are,” she replies, turning from the screen but speaking loudly enough for Dave to hear her, as she adds, “He took that away from me. I’ve been the oldest for my entire life until he came around and now he’s the oldest in the family … I’m now second.”
Long search Dave and Pat had been searching for Dave’s family in Canada for about 15 years before Pat discovered his father’s obituary online. Although they knew his name was Donald Pearls, there were many people with the same name and they couldn’t tell which one was Dave’s father. The obituary outlined his father’s life, so by piecing together what they knew, they could tell this Donald Pearls of Nova Scotia was the one they had been searching for. Telling Dave she had some “good news and some bad news,” Pat explained his father had passed away three days earlier on Jan. 30, 2010, at 92 years of age. But, the obituary also listed Dave’s siblings in Canada.
Photo was the proof Dave and Pat wrote to Joan’s
Cumberland’s Joan Foley talks via Skype with her British brother Dave Minns and his wife Pat, who she found out existed just four years ago. sister, Sherry, in Nova Scotia and included the only photograph of Donald that Dave had. Joan says she and Sherry were so shocked to hear they had a brother in England, they considered he may not really be their brother. “But then he had the picture (of our dad) and there was no other way,” she continues, adding she and her sister have the exact same photo of their father — which shows him in uniform when he was stationed in West Sussex during the Second World War. “He had to be who he said he was.” West Sussex is where Donald met Dave’s birth mother. Dave was born in 1944, and Donald supported his mother for a few months until he returned to Nova Scotia.
He then met Joan’s mother, marrying her and raising a family together in Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, Dave says, “due to circumstances at that time,” his birth mother put him up for adoption when he was three or four. Dave’s birth mother found him in 1995, and it was from her that he discovered his father was a Canadian, and he received the photo of his father.
Father ended search In 1999, they wrote to Library and Archives Canada to find Dave’s father, which it was able to do. “He actually said, ‘Yes, I am his father, but I don’t want the matter to go any further,’ which I quite understand, because he’d since got married and there was
Joan and Sherry and his other family members, and he perhaps didn’t want that to be divulged at the time — it might have upset people,” says Dave. Privacy laws meant the Library and Archives Canada couldn’t provide any more information about his father. Although Joan grew up in Nova Scotia, she moved to the Comox Valley some years ago with her now-ex-husband, who was posted at 19 Wing Comox. Dave had unknowingly followed his father’s footsteps, and joined the British Army at 15, where he stayed until he was 30. Coincidentally, Joan’s family and Dave’s family were both posted to Germany within years of each other during the 1970’s; Dave was there in 1972 and Joan was there in 1977.
DON’T MISS OUR
“While we were there we went to England twice,” recalls Joan. “I really wish I had known; (to meet in person) would have been absolutely amazing.”
In-person meeting unlikely
Though not sure they’ll ever meet in person due to a variety of reasons, one being age, they keep in touch regularly through e-mail and Skype. “At least now we know that the other is there and being able to talk to him like this and actually see them is amazing,” Joan says after the Skype conversation has ended. “I’m just happy he’s in my life — I really am and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I’m just glad he found us.”

Field day for ham radio fans The Comox Valley Amateur Radio Club is having a field day, and anyone with any interest in amateur radio operations is invited. The field day will take place at Kin Beach on June 28, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the shelter with the barbecues. There will be some HF (high frequency) rigs with antennas that will be supported by the nearby trees, as well as some VHF (very high frequency) and some UHF (ultra high frequency) handheld radios on display. “The idea of a field day is to experience the setting up of radio communication systems out in the open country in case of an emergency or in our case here, perhaps an earthquake,” said field day organizer Morris Thompson. “The operators of the systems try to contact as many other stations as they can and of course log all the contacts in the club’s log books. “We are also working on setting up what is called a Fox Hunt. In this particular exercise a small transmitter is hidden in the area and sends a short signal out every 30 seconds and then the members of the club

Comox Mayor Paul Ives, Campbell River Mayor Walter Jakeway and Tofino Mayor Josie Osborne are the newlyelected (May 9) members. All are from the North Island Sunshine Coast Regional Advisory Committee (NISCRAC), a group
that includes mayors, regional district chairs and MLAs from the region. Port McNeill Mayor Gerry Furney was re-elected to ICET’s Board and Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek will continue to serve as Chair of the NISCRAC.

CVAC board to be paid for service we have a viable operation for years down the road, as we change and grow. “We believe this includes a compensated governance model, like the majority of our peer airports across the country.” CVAC depends entirely on revenue generation to fund its operation and targets board members with knowledge and experience in commerce. With, currently, five out of nine CVAC board members retired, a key goal of the board is to diversify its structure and attract more members of the business community. Offering compensation would help make up for some of the time that these individuals would be required to spend away from their place of business due to board duties. “I think it is important to acknowledge those past directors that have served as volunteers,” added van Gisbergen. “These individuals donated their time and energy and played a key role in the success we enjoy today at YQQ. “Our airport is an important economic driver for the community and we believe it will continue to be a viable and well-managed operation well into the future.”
Submitted to The Record
Directors of the Comox Valley Airport Commission (CVAC) voted last week to compensate current and future board members for their governance and oversight of the Comox Valley Airport. Annual compensation divided among nine board members will total $49,000 or 1.2 per cent of 2012/13 operating revenue. The decision to compensate brings YQQ in line with the majority of airports across Canada, including other Vancouver Island airports like Victoria International Airport and Nanaimo Airport. “We believe, as do our colleagues across the country, that the amount of time, energy, commitment and accountability required of an airport board should be recognized,” explained CVAC chair Frank van Gisbergen. The CVAC Board reviewed the issue of compensation for well over a year prior to making a decision. “This has not been an easy choice to make, particularly given the fact that our nominating entities wished for us to retain our voluntary structure,” said van Gisbergen. “We need to look to the future and ensure that

When a guest speaker opens with the phrase “I owe you $12,786,000,” it gets a crowd’s attention. The room fell silent as Mike Hawkins was introduced to the final Gizeh Shrine Club, Comox Valley meeting of the 2013/2014 cycle. Those in attendance were all ears, as Mike addressed the group and gave thanks to the Shriners for all the work they do for children. Mike’s story is a sad one. His stepson, Joe Philion, was severely burned in a fire, 26 years ago, in Cumberland Beach, Ontario. Joe suffered third- and fourth-degree burns to 90 per cent of his body, when he ran into his burning home, searching for family members. He had already saved his brother from the flames and had returned into the carnage looking for his mother, who had left the house just minutes before the fire started, to drive her husband to work. Joe spent five years at the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital in Boston, before the family moved to the Comox Valley. There is no happy ending to this story. A quarter of a century later, Joe resides at St. Joseph’s Hospital, living, but with very little quality of life. Joe’s mom, Linda

After posting some of the top times in the country at this season’s BC Provincial Championships in January and Western Canadian Championships in February, three Comox Valley Aquatic Club swimmers were selected to Team BC’s prestigious 2014 Prospects West Camp and Duel Meet. Ben Neufeld (15), Jordyn Ryan (14) and Cole Young (15) were each selected based on the merit of their total FINA points (the international scoring system for swimmers) in an age-event category. They joined a select group from B.C. in Saskatoon for an intense, four-day camp and competition. The Prospects West initiative brings together all-star teams from B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan along with selected coaches to train and race. Swimmers spent their days in the classroom, gym and pool learning from master coaches and sports experts. “2012 Olympian and 2014 PanPacs and Commonwealth Games Team member, Alec Page, was on hand through the weekend to provide mentorship to the swimmers, as well as leading the swimmers through the activation protocol developed and supported by the Canadian Sport Institute’s experts working with the National Team
swimmers. Alec also gave a talk on Saturday after the dinner, recounting his progression from swimming in water holes on Cortes Island to standing on a starting block alongside Michael Phelps at the 2012 Olympics. “The culmination of the camp was a tri-meet which pitted the three teams against each other in a World Cup-type timed-final format. In the past, this has been a closely fought battle between B.C. and Alberta, with no more than 10 points typically separating the two teams. “This year however, the B.C. swimmers delivered a standing knockout shot in the first event, sweeping the top three places in the boys 800 free and never looked back, winning by almost 100 points. Final point scores had B.C. on top with 554 to Alberta’s 469, with Man-Sask pulling in 156 points.” (Quote from SwimBC.ca). “Not only were three members of our club selected (more than any other club in British Columbia), but our head coach Kris Bell was also selected to participate in this major annual event,” a CVAC spokesperson said. For more information, check out the website at www.sharks.bc.ca. – CVAC Sharks
The Comox Valley is sending eight athletes and one coach to the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games, July 8-12 in Vancouver. Joining coach Nikki Apps (aquatics) are athletes Trevor Carter (5-pin bowling), Kerri Denninger (aquatics), Jake Hooper (athletics), Mason Keddy (athletics), Robert Burns (athletics), Katie Flint (rhythmic gymnastics), Brad Hogan (softball) and Chris Roberge (softball). Team BC 2014 is comprised of 276 athletes with intellectual disabilities, 70 coaches, and 14 mission staff. This is the first time since 1990 that Special Olympics National Games will be held in B.C. FUNERAL HOMES
John Russell Callow
Mooney, Norma Jean, (nee Morris) in her 88th year, first child born to Leonard and Jessite Morris(Wilson) in Bengough, Sask. Dec. 7, 1926, departed peacefully in the early evening of June 15, 2014 in the presence of her loving family. Norma spent her early childhood and school days in Regina, coming west to Vancouver in 1946 to pursue her dream of becoming an RN. Following graduation from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing in 1949, she accepted a position at Langley Memorial Hospital. At the hospital Christmas party she met her future husband. Bud and Norma were married in Sept. of 1951. Married life started in the wilds of Yoho National Park, followed by time in Chilliwack, Terrace, Comox Valley and Duncan. With retirement in 1989, returning to reside in Comox. Norma was devoted to her family always supportive and encouraging. Reading, music, movies, sewing and baking were things she enjoyed in her leisure hours. Family dinners were always complimented by her famous buns, dubbed “Nanny Bunsâ€? by her grandson Jonathan. Her life was enriched with treasured friendships. Family and friends were often the recipients of her creativity, be that her famous Christmas candies or the results of a passion she found in retirement. Quilting‌ baby quilts, wedding quilts, quilts to acknowledge graduations, or just because. Her quilts can be found in the homes of friends across the country, the US, England, Ireland, Italy and Peru. Norma was a valued long time member of the Schoolhouse Quilters. Special times with her little circle of quilting friends were the highlight of her week. Norma found great fun and enjoyment travelling to Reno with her dear friend Margaret while their husbands were off fishing. In more recent times travels to the local casino, akaâ€? the candy storeâ€?, were a much enjoyed outing for these mild gambling gals. Norma is survived and will be dearly missed by her loving husband Bud, her children Kathy Mooney-Campbell River, Jim Mooney-Calgary AB, Kelly Woods (Gary)-Courtenay. Her cherished grandchildren Jennifer Jones-Victoria, BC, Jonathan Woods(Amy), Courtenay, Lauren Paul(Jeff)-Calgary, AB. Her precious great grandsons who brought her so much joy, Landon Woods-Courtenay, Mason and Dylan PaulCalgary, AB. Her siblings, brother Vernon(Bette)Morris and sister Phyllis(Art) Hazle all of Calgary, AB. Her “Mooneyâ€? sisters and brother- Iris, Barb, Peggy, Bill &Grace, Doreen and Grace. As well as numerous nieces and nephews. Norma shared a special connection with nieces Kim, Sherry, Faye, Susan and Lynn. Norma will be remembered by treasured friends, Sylvia Neilsen, Scotty North, Barb Nicholson, Margaret Cameron, Olive Merrick, Gladi Lyall and Raeann Hill. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Tanya Daws for the outstanding care she provided to Norma. Our thanks as well to the Comox Valley Homecare Nurses, the home support team and Comox Valley Hospice Society for the care and support provided to Norma and the family. This difficult time was made much easier because of the love and support of our extended family and friends. Thank you for your calls, cards, visits, flowers and goodies. A special thank you to Kathy whose care of her Mother allowed Norma to remain at home as was her wish. Private Cremation. No service by request. In lieu of flowers donation to Comox Valley Hospice Society or charity of your choice. Remember her with a smile and a random act of kindness. “Say not in grief she is no more but live in thankfulness that she was.â€? “ Good-bye, Norma Jean â€?

He enjoyed many years working in the development industry in the Comox Valley and the North Island. He worked for or with most of the folks in the construction business during this time. He enjoyed this work most of all. Even to the very end, Monte had a tremendous memory for people and of past events in the Valley and was a source of information whenever called upon. He was loved by family and friends and will be missed. After his first heart attack 8 years ago he required extra care, so many thanks to the dozens of care givers from VIHA who helped him along to his final days. Thank you to the St Joseph’s nursing staff, as well as Dr. Nancy McFadden and Dr. John Fitzpatrick. There will be a social reception for friends and family at the Comox Valley Funeral Home at 1101 Ryan Road on Friday, June 27th at 1:00pm.

Have you eaten at Mad Chef Cafe? You ‘gotta’! Erin Halushak Record Staff
Owner/chef Kevin Munroe and partner Shelley Bouchard are hoping that by this time next week, not only the Comox Valley, but the entire country knows you gotta eat at the Mad Chef Cafe. After filming for two days in December, the Food Network Canada show ‘You Gotta Eat Here!’ featuring the restaurant is scheduled to air June 27 at 6:30 p.m., and the restaurant’s duo will celebrate their television debut in style. “We’re having a plaid party,” explained Bouchard, referencing the show’s host and former comedian John Catucci’s wardrobe preference for the tartan patten, which is evident in each episode. “It’s closed to the public, but we’re telling those attending who were there for the filming to wear plaid,” added Bouchard. The show, which features Catucci on a quest to discover the best of Canada’s comfort food, filmed the segment at the restaurant’s former location on Fitzgerald Avenue. Munroe said a few days after

the filming, the restaurant experienced a huge surge in customers, and hopes the show will serve as a tool to raise the profile of the larger area. “We’re really hoping to put the Comox Valley on the map,” he added. Bouchard explained the show came about through e-mails from their customers, who wrote

to the producers. She received a call from the show, and about a year later, Catucci and the crew arrived for filming. “It’s those really unique little places that each city across Canada offers local food, local ingredients and just the vibe that you get in places like this. You can’t really find that in big box restaurants,” said Catucci in an interview during filming. “Places like here, where there are a lot of local farms around and you can get a lot of local ingredients and that’s really cool…. Not only does the restaurant feel that’s important, but people are caring with the food they are eating.” The show produces a cookbook for each season with recipes from the featured restaurants, and Mad Chef Cafe submitted its famous F-Bomb dessert — sautéed bananas with coffee liquor caramel sauce over a double chocolate brownie topped with ice cream and whipped cream — for the book. As fans of the American Food Network Guy Fieri-hosted show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Munroe and Bouchard noted they are hoping to entice the cross-country chef north of the

Cougar killing a last resort
A
story broke late last week of a cougar that had to be put down after entering a home. A woman in Vernon came home from a walk to find a cougar in her living room, with one of her dog’s chew toys in its mouth. The conservation officer was eventually forced to kill the cougar. The most shocking, and saddest, part of this story is not that the cougar died; it’s the vitriol that has been spewed at the conservation officer on media websites carrying the article. “That S.O.B.” “A-holes.” “Wish the cougar would have gotten one of them first.” Although this incident did not happen on the Island, whenever one does, similar comments flood the Internet. Such comments are not only uncalled for, they are ignorant. The bottom line is, conservation officers are exactly that: CONSERVATION officers. They are not hired to kill wildlife, and to a person, they will say it’s the part of their job they despise the most. Killing an animal is a last resort for them. In this case, that cougar had become so comfortable around human scent that it entered a home and was sprawled out on a living room rug! Yes, it was a chew toy in the cat’s mouth. It could just as easily have been a toddler. This is not a deer, people. This is a wild carnivore. It will attack, kill and eat anything smaller than it, or perceived weaker than it. That includes humans. Cougars may be “beautiful, majestic” animals, as one poster described; but they are also vicious predators that would just as soon try to turn you into their next meal, as walk the other way. There are more than enough documented cases of cougar attacks on humans to support that statement. As for the animal sanctuary argument, such places should only be used to bring an animal back to health, with the goal of releasing it back into the wild. That was not the issue with this cat. This cat had crossed a line – a line where animal conservation loses... to human preservation. Let the conservation officers do their jobs. They are trained professionals and a very dangerous profession it is. We should not be judging them or second-guessing their decisions from the safety of our sofas. –Black Press

more. We’ve just got to get over this ‘silo’ thinking and heed former mayor Starr Winchester’s words about partnerships and co-operation and stop protecting ‘our’ budgets rather than thinking about the big picture. The Comox Valley Regional District board just received the go-ahead to borrow $1.9 million to refurbish the curling rink using an alternate approval process (AAP). The AAP process means that an initiative will pass unless 10 per cent of voters in the Valley vote against it. If you don’t take the time to register your opposition to a CVRD initiative of this sort, it passes. There is no need for you to vote for it. I have no problem with fixing up the curling rink, but I question why the CVRD board could not go the same route in dealing with the more modest proposal from the Comox Valley Housing Task Force to establish a service to deal with homelessness and build affordable housing. I realize that the Task Force proposed the question go to referendum but with a little will in the right direction, moving the question to the AAP could happen. Is curling a higher priority than housing the homeless? Roger Albert is the vice-president of the Comox Valley Social Planning Society and Faculty Emeritus at North Island College. Two-time heart transplant patient says thanks to Record reporter Dear editor, Hello, my name is Robbie Thompson. I’m writing this e-mail after just reading a recent article regarding a local nurse named Chad Dwolisnky and his successful heart transplant (Against all odds, Comox Valley man gets his heart; Comox Valley Record, June 10).
I have a great interest in the article as its subject is very close to me. You see, I myself have had two heart transplants in my short life (I’m only 16.) My family and I are quite passionate about organ donation as a result. If possible, I’d like a very big thanks to be relayed to the
author of the article and as well, of course, the Record for publishing this. Also, if it is possible for you to relay a congratulations to the Dwolinsky family, that would be very appreciated. Thank you very much, Robert (Robbie) F. Thompson and family Courtenay

BC Hydro the party spreading misinformation Dear editor, I would like to respond to some gross misinformation published on June 17 in your paper, attributed to Mr. Ted Olynyk, BC Hydro’s community relations manager (Letter to the Editor: Smart meter protesters share a wealth of misinformation). The radio frequency signals emitted by smart meters definitely are NOT “similar to those emitted by televisions, radios and other common household devices.” Mr. Olynyk needs to be told that: 1) smart meters contain two transmitters, both of which emit low-level pulsed non-thermal microwave radiation; 2) non-industry funded scientists know that pulsed non-thermal radiation is far more harmful to the cells and organs of any living thing; 3) non industry-funded scientists say that there is no such thing as a safe level of radiation, no matter how weak the signal; 4) the frequency on which a smart meter’s primary transmitter operates, 910 MHz, is one of the most dangerous frequencies imaginable, because it penetrates more deeply every organ of the human body; it also will cook food and heat liquids faster and more effectively than does the

MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
Timing right for South Courtenay sewer line Dear editor, This is a letter of appreciation and encouragement for all the people involved in creating such a great trail from Royston Wrecks along the seashore north towards Courtenay. Even though this trail doesn’t connect yet with the south part of the airpark trail in Courtenay, it has brought us very close to having a pathway all the way to Royston. I am a homeowner in the section of properties that are in between the two trails and do hope to see the continuation of the paths so that one could travel by foot or bicycle along the oceanfront from Courtenay to Royston without interruption and away from the busy road. Our area, called South Courtenay, has just recently been annexed into the City of Courtenay and
pily make myself available to debate the issue with them - in public, so that the public can judge for themselves who is telling the truth!
with this new development we are expecting that there will now be a sewer pipe installed along the foreshore right of way to service the homes that have up to this point been on septic systems. Isn’t this a perfect opportunity to then create the last stretch of path to be built which will connect the two existing paths? The clearing of right of way and installation of pipe and path in one process seems not only plausible but also the least expensive way to go for the taxpayer. We have been warned that having been brought into the City of Courtenay our taxes will go up. My hope is that we will be treated fairly and receive the services we should in a timely fashion. Show us what you’ve got Courtenay! Stan Wood Courtenay
The main objective of this workshop is to improve your understanding of the principles of pain management and its treatments, introduce different methods to cope with chronic pain and show how to take an active role in your our pain management. Participants have the chance to learn new information and skills that will complement conventional treatments. Everyone with any type of Chronic Pain is welcome to attend! Dear editor, I was in Tim Hortons last week with some friends in Courtenay and I couldn’t help but notice that the place was abuzz about how poorly our veterans were being treated. It’s hard to believe. We often forget that our military personnel are, in fact, workers – committed to carrying out a specific job. When their employer (Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada) puts them in harm’s way and then they are injured or killed, it should be incumbent upon the government to properly take care of them and their families. If the government truly believes that we cannot afford to take care of our military personnel when they are injured or retire, then we cannot afford to send our troops to war. It is unacceptable the way our dedicated veterans (of whom we’ve asked so much) are being treated with such disrespect. If you want to support our troops, send Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative government an e-mail demanding they stop picking on our vets. Dave Coles Comox Valley
