Blood services sees decline in donors in Nanaimo area By ChRIS BuSh ThE NEwS BULLETiN
Canadian Blood Services volunteers took to the corridors of Woodgrove Shopping Centre to campaign for new donors Friday. Campaigning from a mall kiosk was the brainchild of Panvir Dhaliwal, a university student and volunteer, who with other volunteers, handed out balloons to children and leaflets listing upcoming blood donor clinics scheduled for Nanaimo. Most shoppers walked past, eyes averted as if avoiding hawkers who regularly pitch from kiosks offering everything from beauty lotions to sunglasses and radio-controlled toys. “This is just an awareness campaign,” Dhaliwal said. “We’re not actually taking donations right now. One
of the biggest problems that we have is people don’t know when the clinics are – when the dates are – because we don’t take blood every single day. What we’re hoping to do is get some information out there, so people know what’s going on.” Aside from not knowing clinic dates and locations, people also often don’t know whether they’re eligible to give blood or where they can call or find out information online. The low number of pamphlets accepted by passersby doesn’t surprise Chris Barron, Canadian Blood Services territory manager, who said, due to budget restrictions, the organization does little advertising in B.C. and only about 2.5 per cent of the population regularly donates blood. “So it’s not surprising to see more people walk by than actually talk with
us,” Barron said. About 2,500 people are regular blood donors in Nanaimo. “We do have a well-attended clinic in Nanaimo, but it is showing a little bit of a decline in the amount of donors showing up as of late.” Barron said some people in Nanaimo donate blood regularly up to six times each year. “Which is a slippery slope because if those people start to be unable to donate we’ve got to pick people up on the other side,” Barron said. Canadian Blood Services holds blood donation clinics several times each month at Beban Park Social Centre. end to long-term lease forces Nanaimo group to develop land on westwood Road. By TamaRa CuNNINgham ThE NEwS BULLETiN
The Nanaimo SPCA is appealing to city officials to help pay for a $2.7-million, state-of-theart shelter. The local SPCA wants to start construction of a new Nanaimo Regional Community Animal Centre now that its lease with the city expired, asking the municipality to chip in between $150,000 and $200,000 over the next three years to help. The lease contract for the current shelter on Labieux Road cost the SPCA a dollar a year and expired last April. The SPCA says it was told two years ago its lease wouldn’t be renewed, prompting it to launch a feasibility study for a new facility. According to Bill Corsan, the city’s manager of real estate, council made the decision not to renew the lease, hoping to encourage the organization to use its own 4.8-hectare property on Westwood Road, which it’s owned for the last eight years. The Labieux area is slated for redevelopment, which was another reason behind the decision to end the long-term lease. “The goal was ... you should be moving your facility to your property rather than having a vacant site and using city property for a nominal amount,” Corsan said. Leon Davis, Nanaimo SPCA branch manager, said when the lease wasn’t renewed, Nanaimo moved to the top of the priority list for facility replacement. The SPCA hadn’t built on its Westwood site until now because it was a “resources issue,” as other shelters in B.C. were in greater need of replacement. See ‘SHELTER’ /4

The public is reminded that unauthorized entry onto the site is prohibited. City water surpasses quality standards Nanaimo water makes the grade, according to a new water quality report. The City of Nanaimo has released its 2013 Annual Water Quality Report, showing where our water comes from and how the city ensures it’s safe. The document says the city’s drinking water met provincial and federal standards last year. It also reports there were 33 complaints in 2013, the majority of which were over the colour and taste of drinking water. Most of the problems were fixed after additional flushing of the city’s distribution main lines.

A man from Nanaimo was arrested on the weekend for the death of a man in Surrey. Dustin Barry Anderson, 42, was arrested in Nanaimo Saturday by members of the Surrey-based RCMP Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and Nanaimo RCMP. Anderson is accused of killing Shaunce Poirier, 33, of Surrey. Poirier was found suffering from life-threatening injuries on the corner of 132nd Street and 108th Avenue in Surrey shortly after 2 p.m. June 16. Poirier died later that day. Police have not commented on the circumstances leading to Poirier’s death or what caused the
fatal injury, but did say Poirier and Anderson are known to police and that the death was not the result of a random act. “We are continuing our investigation into this murder and at this point our investigators have determined that this was not a random act. There are no further details available to the public at this time,” said Sgt. Bari Emam, Integrated Homicide Investigative Team spokesman, in a June 16 press release. Anderson will appear in Surrey provincial court today (June 24) to face one count of second-degree murder. Investigators had not released further information about the investigation by press time.

Gunshot draws emergency team A police check on a man had an unfortunate ending Sunday. Police were called to a home on Black Diamond Drive Sunday at about 4 p.m. to check on the well-being of a distraught man. Upon arriving at the home, officers heard one gunshot from inside the residence. Police closed off the area and diverted traffic until an emergency response team arrived and entered the
home at about 6 p.m. “Our Emergency Response Team members entered the home to check on the wellbeing of an individual and sadly that person died by a self-inflicted gunshot,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. Police are not releasing further details about the death, which has been turned over to the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

Nanaimo shelter priority for SPCA vices people wouldn’t otherwise get through the local pound, Davis said. The city also provides thousands of dollars to the SPCA’s snip program and allowed it to operate on city land tax-free for more than three decades. “It seems like a natural partnership and the city has been so kind [to] us, but because the lease wasn’t being renewed I thought they could help us out a little bit. If I can raise about $250,000 by September we are a go,” he said. Coun. Bill Bestwick had yet to review the request but said he supports it in principle because the organization has long provided a valuable service to the community and is selfsustainable. The funding request was presented at an open council meeting Monday. The SPCA will continue to fundraise if it doesn’t get the dollars. It hopes to go to tender for construction in midAugust.

The organization also had to raise money to pay for new construction and find $750,000 annually to run the current animal shelter. More than $780,000 has been raised by the Nanaimo SPCA so far, and Davis is now asking the city to contribute. While the city pays to operate and repair its own shelter, the SPCA provides ser-

Terms set for ferry lease

City agrEES to terms to allow island Ferries to operate downtown. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
A new lease agreement with the City of Nanaimo is a “significant milestone,” according to an Island Ferries spokesman, who says the company can now focus almost exclusively on clinching final investment. The City of Nanaimo and Island Ferries have reached a land lease deal for a foot ferry service on the south industrial waterfront. The agencies have been ironing out the details of a 20-year lease since they announced an agreement in principle last March. The new deal includes changes from the early proposal, like additional land for Island Ferries and an option for the city to use airspace above the terminal. Island Ferries will pay $52,000 annually to dock two catamarans at a property spanning 1.1 hectares, as well as just over $15,000 each year for a road right-of-way. It’s also agreed to pay for a parking area,

either through net revenue or a monthly fee. The City of Nanaimo will service the ferry site for $125,000. According to David Marshall, director of marine operations for Island Ferries, the agreement is a big piece of the puzzle for a new passenger ferry service. The organization has been trying to secure final investment since details about the ferries were made public last October. “We have advanced our equity discussions to a point that with this lease, it increases our confidence in our ability to be operating by early next year,” he said, adding the new lease allows Island Ferries to focus virtually exclusively on closing the last of the money. Mayor John Ruttan said the contract was important to both parties and is a step forward in the long march toward getting a passenger service re-established. The long-term lease includes two renewable terms and a relocation clause that will allow the city to move the terminal to another site on the industrial waterfront. The agreement still needs final approval from the City of Nanaimo.
There was nothing easy about this year’s 240-kilometre Ride to Conquer Cancer for Nanaimo’s Deb Trockstad, but she had good reasons to keep on pedaling. Trockstad, 55, started the two-day cycling event to honour her mother, who died of lung cancer years ago, but on the road she was reminded of why else she joined the trek from Vancouver to Seattle. On the first day of the journey, she spotted a woman surrounded by family and holding up a sign that thanked riders for taking to the asphalt and helping to save her life. “It brought the reality … of why we were doing all this,” she said. “There was rain and wind and there were times I thought I was the only person on the road. I had muscle aches and my legs were hurting and I was cold. But I just kept going; kept pedalling.” Trockstad was among more than 2,000 participants who took part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer June 14-15, helping to raise $9.1 million for cancer research. The Nanaimo resident, who raised $2,830 for the cause, decided to take part last year after her son crossed the finish line. It looked like an “amazing experience” and a good way to honour her mother’s memory, she said, adding it took her six months to train for the ride. “It was an incredible experience,” she said. “I am so proud I was part of it.” Next year’s ride is on Aug. 29-30. People can register at www.conquercancer.ca.

Old City Quarter park targeted for concert hub
Expect delays as road work ramps up Nanaimo roads and highways will see a bit of a summer slowdown starting next week. The City of Nanaimo released an update an upcoming road construction projects, including work on the old Island Highway and Hammond Bay Road. “The city thanks residents and commuters for their patience and cooperation,” said Steve Ricketts, the city’s manager of construction, in a press release. According to the city, Fortis B.C. started installation of a gas main on Highway 19A from Mostar Road to Aulds Road. Motorists can expect single-lane traffic southbound. A new sidewalk will be built along Hammond Bay Road between Tom’s Turnabout and Dunn Place. The project will begin this week and will include road repaving, necessitating alternating single-lane traffic. Construction of Linley Valley Drive off of Turner Road starts in July and will include a new roundabout on Turner. The project will force single-lane alternate traffic and short-term road closures and motorists are encouraged to use Uplands Drive as an alternate route. Other projects include improvements to Neck Point Park’s main vehicle entrance, and water main work on Harwell Road. Please visit www. nanaimo.ca.

CAPPY YAtES Park lies derelict at wallace street.
By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Community groups are teaming up to transform one of Nanaimo’s derelict downtown properties into a temporary public space. The Old City Quarter Association will team up with the Young Professionals of Nanaimo and the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association to turn Cappy Yates Park into a hub for concerts and picnics. If you’re feeling a little déjà vu, it’s because this isn’t the first time the property has been refreshed. The private, weedchoked lot on the corner of Fitzwilliam and Wallace streets has followed a pattern of temporary use and neglect since the mansion of seafarer Arthur Fitzgerald Yates was torn down for development in the early 1980s, according to records from the Nanaimo Community Archives. By 1988, the space was still vacant and landowners allowed the Performing Arts of Nanaimo to christen it Cappy Yates Park and use it for special events and concerts, according to the Nanaimo Free Press. When the

property changed hands, the site appears to have lapsed back into overgrowth until other residents took on its restoration, including the Nanaimo Youth Services Association in 2000. Now, community groups have visions of cleaning it up again so people can enjoy music in the park. They say a public space could attract visitors and add to the ambiance to the Old City Quarter.
“[Recently] it’s not been the focus of any effort to turn it into something really good. That’s what we want to do,” said Eric McLean, president of the Old City Quarter Association. “We think it’s in ... an ideal location for events and picnics in the summertime.” Cappy Yates Park is owned by Paul Saroya of Akal Developments who purchased it about seven years ago. While he has
development plans, Saroya said he’s had to focus on other projects and won’t likely turn his attention to the site for another three years. He is considering building an apartment-style hotel but in the meantime, said he is happy to see the property used. The cleanup is anticipated to begin in July and is already getting a lot of attention, according to Adam Hawryluk, presi-
dent of the Young Professionals of Nanaimo, who said there are more than 90 likes on their Facebook page for the project and dozens of comments. “There’s a lot of community push behind it. It seems to have struck a chord,” he said. “We know we are on the right track when we get that kind of response.” A work plan is currently being developed. news@nanaimobulletin.com
Land exchange provides recreational corridor along Millstone River By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
A new property swap could land the city a seamless 18-hectare park. The City of Nanaimo has announced it has entered into two land exchange agreements with property owners along the Millstone River. The deal, which would cost Nanaimo $20,000 in survey work, would switch up boundaries along the Millstone River, creating a continuous city-owned nature corridor between Maffeo Sutton

The swap needs the permission of the Agricultural Land Commission because the properties sit within the reserve, but if approved, officials say the green space will lead to new recreational opportunities and environmental protection. “On the recreational corridor side, [it] provides some real opportunities of actually creating some trail ways that will now link together,” said Richard Harding, the city’s director of parks, recreation and environment. “This is an important piece.”

Since the 1990s the City of Nanaimo has been working to create the Millstone Greenway, a linear corridor that will link public spaces like Maffeo-Sutton Park, Bowen park and Buttertubs Marsh. The trail currently only stretches from the waterfront to Buttertubs, but has the potential to go as far as East Wellington Road. Last December the city purchased what it called the last piece of land needed to complete its greenway vision – a $340,000 plot at 155 Westwood Rd. The city didn’t own all the land along the

Landowners will trade just over four hectares for 1.8 hectares of the city’s new Westwood Road property. The trade will go through at the end of the year if approved by the land commission. “Fingers crossed,” said Bill Corsan, the city’s manager of real estate. “If the ALC grants approval for this, I think we will have a cool park network.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Let’s be leaders in limiting litres We have enough water to quench our thirst, and plenty more, too, but we should still savour every sip. The City of Nanaimo is reaffirming a commitment with its 2014 Water Conservation Strategy, adopted this month. The municipality will expand its toilet rebate program, provide enhanced water billing information and promote grey-water irrigation. It’s worth noting that Nanaimo is already doing relatively well with saving water. According to the city, residents met a target set in 2008 to reduce usage by 15 per cent. Nanaimoites now use 251 litres per person per day, better than both the national average of 274 litres and the B.C. average of 353 litres. But if 251 litres per person still sounds like a lot, well, that’s because it is, and we’re right to wonder if it’s sustainable. A global leader in water conservation is the Netherlands, where residents use half what we use. Their methods aren’t a secret: industry there is devoted to recapture technology, but homeowners have mostly just installed low-flow toilets and shower heads. In Canada, half our water is used in the bathroom, so plumbing renovations do make a difference. And kudos to those who take the trouble to capture rainwater or grey water for their lawns and gardens. Those things help, but saving water has to be simple. Since it’s still viewed as something that’s free, sometimes it’s hard to see any incentive to turn off the tap. So go ahead and save water the easy way. Take a shorter shower. Fill your dishwasher all the way. If you water your lawn, do so at a time of day that minimizes evaporation. The Regional District of Nanaimo has brainstormed dozens of ideas; search for its Team WaterSmart website for tips. Lots of us in Nanaimo don’t need these reminders – we’re already making a worthy effort to be water-wise. But we can be stingier still. Let’s continue to be leaders in conservation. Let’s turn off the taps, limit our litres and respect our resources. First Nations and other affected communities and lacks social licence – although those are strong enough reasons to stop it. The main reasons it and other pipeline projects shouldn’t be built are the very same ones the government and joint review panel refused to consider. Rapid tar sands expansion, increasing reliance on dirty fossil fuels and more infrastructure that ties us to them for decades contravene the need to protect the environment, human health, global climate systems and even economic resilience. Our choice is between ignoring overwhelming scientific evidence about the human contribution to climate change or changing our ways and reducing fossil fuel dependence. It’s about the kind of country – and planet – we want to leave to our children and grandchildren. The government has irresponsibly weakened democracy in its willful blindness to the most pressing economic and environmental issue of our time. Northern Gateway has received qualified government approval. The decision will now face First Nations court challenges and backlash from the majority of British Columbians and Canadians whose voices have so far been ignored. For the sake of our communities and the future of our children, let’s hope democracy prevails. www.davidsuzuki.org

Parkland isn’t just a bunch of lots To the Editor,
Re: Park purchase a shady deal, Letters, June 19. This area is not a bunch of lots but rather is an important wildlife ecosystem with interconnected wetland ponds and woodland areas and many different species of birds and
other wildlife. It is a wild area and is not a groomed grassy park. Once these areas disappear they are gone forever and we, the people of Nanaimo as well as all of the wildlife that inhabit these areas, are the ones who will suffer. This purchase is not all
about the money. It would cost far more than the city is paying for the properties, to develop them into subdivisions, and build and maintain roads and infrastructure, then to leave it in its natural state. The only conflict of interest in my opinion is the
letter writer’s inability to see that some purchases of wild spaces in this time and day are far more important than what is paid for them. Linley Valley West will more than pay for itself in years to come.

Pat Rustand Nanaimo teacher
I am a mother, grandmother, and a nurse. I recently walked the picket lines with teachers in Nanaimo; I believe to understand the issues in any situation you need to talk with the front-line workers which I did, the teachers and an EA friend of mine. People drove by with their middle fingers up at the teachers. I noticed that every car with parents and children on board waved and honked. It is well-documented that even in the poorest countries, an education is revered and gives hope for a future. B.C. has the highest percentage of child poverty in Canada along with the second lowest funding per child for education. Why is this allowed? I saw teachers cry; they would rather be teaching than this job action. Teachers didn’t cause this and they have children too; now they have no income. Maybe the armchair critics should question how the government doesn’t have to abide by a Supreme Court ruling. Put the blame where it belongs. It really does take a village to raise a child.
Slam dunk, buddy!
Clark has been relentlessly acting on the first two parts of the old adage. Please, do not let her get away with the third part of that statement: You can fool all of the people all of the time. We and our children, our future leaders of society, deserve better than that.
And you can’t even touch rim! Cool!
Re: Strike won’t delay exams, grad ceremonies, June 19. I’m sure everyone has heard the old adage, often stated in reference to politicians: You can fool some of the people all of the time. You can fool all of the people some of the time. For 12 years now, the Liberal government has told the voters and people of B.C. that the province just does not have the necessary funds available to provide quality public educational services that every child deserves and every parent wants. Premier Christy Clark and her government have not only underfunded public education (yet raised funding significantly for private schools), but have also tried to discredit and disparage public schools and their teachers. Clark has reiterated the same spiel about teachers being greedy at the expense of students. And yet, her own and many of her cohorts’ salaries, expenses and pension benefits have risen astronomically during that same period. Clark has been saying that her ‘Families First’ agenda drives her mandate. And yet everything she and her party have done to date contradicts that.

Weiland continues to rock Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman experiences a rebirth.

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
S
cott Weiland has experienced more than his fair share of lows throughout his career as a rockstar and yet he has always managed to pick the microphone back up even in the darkest of times. “You have moments where you feel like you’re on top of the world and then there are moments when you fall and it is what you do when you pick yourself up,” Weiland said. The former Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver frontman, whose history of drug use and arrests is well-recorded, has picked himself up once again, this time with his newly formed band Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts. “It feels a lot like the feeling I had when I made my very first album with STP,” Weiland said about working with the Wildabouts. “It’s just really exciting to work.” On Friday (June 27), Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts will be
taking the stage in the Harbour City. “[We are] just very excited to play our new songs as well as our versions that we’ve reworked of STP songs and Velvet Revolver songs,” Weiland said about the upcoming performance at the Spice Lounge. Originally, Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts began as a fivepiece but recently decided to drop down to a four-piece. “Now there is so much more space between the notes and that space is really important ... it works out a lot better,” Weiland said about the decision to become a quartet. Weiland and his band are currently working toward their first album, which has yet to be named, that is scheduled to be released around Christmas time. “It’s definitely a lot more indie sounding than the big riffs that are STP or Velvet Revolver. It’s rock ’n’ roll but it has a modern artistic approach to it,” Weiland explained. “A lot of that is taking a lot of time thinking about
what kind of tones to use, what kind of pedals to use. We’re really kinda of leaning towards multi-fuzz boxes and adding octaves to that, like low octaves as far as the riffs go.”
Quickfacts SCOTT WEILAND was once the frontman for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver and has won two Grammy Awards.
Weiland’s musical career began in 1985 when he helped form what would eventually become Stone Temple Pilots, a band he would stay with on and off for more than 15 years. He also spent time as a member of the supergroup Velvet Revolver. Weiland explained that as a member of Stone Temple Pilots he was so driven to succeed that he often forgot to stop and enjoy the moment. “Every time each moment would come up I was always so driven that I would look
towards the next marker of success and then I realized at one point after winning the first Grammy that I’d missed a lot of experiences along the way because I was always shooting for the next level,” Weiland said. “I kind of missed a lot of the journey because I was looking ahead. But I got another chance to experience that and relived that with Velvet Revolver.” The Californian’s departure from Stone Temple Pilots as well as his rifts with Velvet Revolver have been well-documented. “Until the last part of the last year, we got a long really good. We had a lot in common and it was a lot of fun,” Weiland said about his time with Stone Temple Pilots. After being a frontman for more than two decades with two hugely successful bands, Weiland, who also has a solo career, knows there is more to being a rock star than meets the eye. “There is that romanticized version of what being a rock
star is and then there is what it really is,” Weiland said. “I felt myself at conflict about that, you know? Holding onto my artistic ideals and yet being pressured by the label and management to deliver hits.” When Weiland looks back at his career he is more appreciative and grateful for many of the big moments in his career. “I can honestly say I am very very pleased that I was fortunate enough to win a couple Grammys. That’s a huge thing.” Weiland also cherishes some of the lighter moments in his career, such as his visit to Walter Reid National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. “That was very emotional time for me and very difficult. I had to kind of take a break in between that time,” Weiland said. “Those kind of things come your way and those are the things you really remember.” Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts perform at the Spice Lounge on June 27. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

When Iulia Hanganu first arrived in Canada she expected to hear English, instead the first words she heard were in French. “I didn’t know it was going be bilingual,” Hanganu recalled. “I was surprised, but in a great way.” Hanganu was 14 years old when her family immigrated to Toronto from Timisoara, Romania in 2003. “I didn’t know much about [Canada] at the time,” Hanganu said. “In Grade 4 someone from my elementary school, from my class moved to Toronto. So the little information I had was kind of stories of what it was like in school and stuff like that, but I didn’t really know much about Canada.” Hanganu’s story is just one of many that residents of the Harbour City can learn about at the Nanaimo Museum’s latest exhibit, Canada: Day 1, which is on currently display until late August. “It’s a wonderful exhibit filled with stories,” said Deb-

bie Trueman, general manager of the museum. “It’s people’s stories of their first experience on Day 1 in Canada.” Canada: Day 1 was organized by the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 and is its first travelling exhibit, which features interactive videos, artifacts and more. “It’s emotional. Some of them are funny, some of them are sad,” Trueman said about
the stories featured at the exhibit. Hanganu, now in her mid 20s, currently works for the Government of Ontario in Toronto. She remains grateful that she moved to Canada. “I know for a fact that I wouldn’t have had the opportunties that I have had here, back home,” Hanganu said. Celebrate summer at the park By Nicholas Pescod THE NEWS BuLLETiN
Come celebrate everything summer with the City of Nanaimo. On Thursday (June 26), members of the city’s parks, recreation and environment department will be holding their Family Fun Night barbecue at Departure Bay Centennial Park. The free event will feature live entertainment, art, tennis and games with the Parks, Recreation and Environment Summer Promo Team. “It is a celebration of everything summer,” said Deborah Beck, recreation coordinator. The event, which is in partnership with Nanaimo Foodshare, Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society and the North Island Tennis Academy, encourages residents to check out the variety of programs the city offers. “Come out and enjoy fun in the park with us,” Beck said. “Come celebrate different programs that the City of Nanaimo has to offer.” The night will also provide residents with an opportunity to meet various people employed by the City of Nanaimo. “That’s why we want them to come down because our summer staff are going to be there,” Beck said. “So they can come down and meet the leaders, check out what the programs and camps are going to be like.” Family Fun Night takes place on June 26 at Departure Bay Centennial Park from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. For more information, please visit www. nanaimo.ca. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

PET ADOPTION
HAPPY ENDINGS:
Charlie, Oreo, Diva, Lola and Zoe Charlie’s mom came to us pregnant, and so he was born in our care, and then adopted to a wonderful family. Charlie now loves to play tug of war, go for walks, fetch sticks in the water, play at the dog park with all the other dogs and people! He is super friendly and loves to meet everyone he sees. This handsome boy enjoys stealing his family’s socks if they are left on the floor, but most of all he loves being anywhere they are! The family is so happy that they have a friendly happy pup and that the “teen” years will pass too!

Oreo came to us as a stray little guy. He was in foster care for a while before getting adopted because he was a little sick and curiously u n d e rd eve l o p e d for his age (he was too big to have baby teeth). He has finally found his forever home all the way in Vancouver.

Diva had one lone kitten when she came into the shelter. The kitten had been adopted and she then waited patiently at the Puss’n’boots boarding kennel for her family to find her. Not long later an employee decided she couldn’t live without her and came in to adopt Diva into her family. Lola and Zoe were both transferred to us from the Victoria shelter as they had too many small animals at their shelter. They were bonded together and so we were trying to find them a home together. Luckily, they found themselves a wonderful home together, forever!

February 15, 1941 - June 16, 2014
Born in Montreal, Quebec, February 15, 1941, passed away in Nanaimo on June 16, 2014 after a brave battle with cancer. Predeceased by his father, George Booth, in 2005, and Mother, Helen, in 1944. He was a telephone installer for 22 years with Bell and AGT before moving to Nanaimo to own a small motel. He tried his hand at selling real estate before finally getting his marine engineer papers and working 15 years at CFMETR, Nanoose, on auxillary vessels. David loved hiking and the outdoors, where he could spend hours atop one of his favourite hills reading, sunning and taking in the beauties of nature. He will be dearly missed by Valerie, his wife of 46 years. Many thanks to the VIHA nurses who visited David at home the past two years. No service by request. Any donations may be made to your favourite charity. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032
JEFFS,
MARJORIE ELAINE (Nee Ganner)
February 5, 1925 - June 17, 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Marge on June 17, 2014. Marge is now reunited with her beloved husband, Bob (2002). She is lovingly remembered by her family, Rick (Susan), Leigh (Judy), Roberta (Larry 2010), Bill (Debbie 2011) , Madeline (Alistair), 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, her sister, Gert, a large extended family and many friends. Marge was predeceased by her sisters Muriel (2000) and Dorathy (2014). Marge was born February 5, 1925. As a native daughter of Nanaimo, she was very proud of her ancestors who, after 6 months of travel around Cape Horn aboard the Princess Royal arrived in Nanaimo at the Bastion on November 27, 1854. Her work ethics were established early in the family’s delivery business and continued to include work at the Metropolitan Store, Nanaimo Civic Area (where she met Bob), the Bank of Montreal and later alongside Bob in his business, RC Jeffs Construction. Marge was proud to be one of the 125 people to receive the City of Nanaimo’s Certificate of Recognition for dedicated service to the citizens of Nanaimo, and was a past president of the Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary, a founding member of the Nanaimo Quilters’ Guild, and a Cruise Ship Ambassador. Marge was a wellinformed, independent, organized and vibrant woman who was line dancing the week before her passing. Marge’s greatest love was her family and she was loved equally in return. Mom left her children these words to remember: “Family is the most important thing in the world. If you haven’t got family you have nothing. She will be dearly missed. A celebration of life will be held at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre on Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Nanaimo Auxiliary to NRGH or the Nights of Columbus would be appreciated.
Kenneth Bradley Singer December 16, 1929 - June 16, 2014 At the age of 84, Ken passed away Monday, June 16th, 2014 at Dufferin Place in Nanaimo, BC. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary (Hambly) Singer; his son, Edward Singer; his daughter, Rhonda (Singer) Schreiber; two grandchildren, Melissa & Kyle Schreiber and his best friend Raymond Sorheim. Ken was born and raised in Massett, BC, where he went from being a logger to a commercial fisherman. He fished out of Prince Rupert for 51 years, retiring in 2001. By request of the family there will be no service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ken may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or BC Children’s Hospital. Ken will be missed by his loving family and his many friends.
Margaret Ruth Stobo (Nee Carr) Oct. 21, 1921 ~ June 21, 2014 Passed away with her children by her side. Born in Taber Alberta. She is predeceased by her parents Mary Taylor (Brand) and Pearson Halliday Carr, her siblings Jack, Jessie, Bill, her first husband Russell Carruthers, her love Lester Campbell Stobo, three sons Ronald, Raymond, Lawrence. Surviving is Mary Ellen Maltesen (Jan) and Robert Stobo (Kathy), grandchildren Kris, Crystal, Michelle, Robert, Emily and 5 great grandchildren. Step children Robin Stobo, Gerald Stobo Liz Peterman, 8 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mom lived a long healthy active life of service to her family and community in Calgary and Nanaimo. Acme T-men beat Bandits back-to-back BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
BY GREG SAKAKI
The Nanaimo Timbermen had up-and-down results because their effort was inconsistent, said the coach. The senior A T-men defeated the New Westminster Salmonbellies 11-9 on the road Thursday, but followed up with a 10-4 loss to the Coquitlam Adanacs at home Sunday. “We had a great game in New West,” said Kaleb Toth, coach of the T-men. “Defence played great, offence played great, we shared the ball, we moved it around. “You’d hope that we’d have the same effort the next game, but we didn’t.” Instead, another slow start cost the home team. Nanaimo trailed 5-1 at the first intermission and the score was never close after that. “I’m going to take the blame and say it’s me, that I’m not preparing them enough or motivating them enough and that’s why we’re having slow starts,” Toth said. The Adanacs were faster and crisper in the first period, getting T-men defenders out of position and creating scoring opportunities. At the other end

of the floor, the Timbermen couldn’t get to the crease and so they settled for outside shots. “We can’t get outworked and that’s basically what happened – guys were standing around,” said Toth. “On offence when you’re
successful, you have to move the ball but you also have to move your feet.” Macgregor Johnston, Tyson Roe, Kyle Hofer and Paul Brebber scored goals and Zak Boychuk made 42 saves as his team was outshot 52-25.
In the win at New West, Brebber scored four goals, Cayle Ratcliff and Hofer had two goals and two assists each and Conrad Chapman, Jamie Sorensen and Myles Kenny were the other scorers. Boychuk made 37 saves for the win.
GAME ON … Nanaimo’s next game is Saturday (June 28) at Frank Crane Arena against the Burnaby Lakers. Faceoff is at 7 p.m. … The T-men then visit the Maple Ridge Burrards the next day. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
Hub City Pirates swept up, slide back into slump Home field was no advantage as the Nanaimo Pirates lost four straight on the weekend. The Hub City Paving Pirates lost 6-0 and 5-4 to the White Rock Tritons on Saturday at Serauxmen Stadium, then got shut out 2-0 and 10-0 by the Abbotsford Cardinals the next day at the stadium. In the one-run loss, James McDonough led the Pirates, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. THE NEWS BULLETIN Shawn Arabsky had a hit, Nanaimo Pirates infielder Chris Vlaj fields a two walks and two runs grounder during Sunday’s game against the scored. In Sunday’s early game, Abbotsford Cardinals at Serauxmen Stadium.
Josh Burgmann was tagged with the loss on the mound, striking out seven over seven innings. Chris Vlaj doubled. North Rainey was the losing pitcher in the blowout loss despite allowing only one hit and two earned runs over five innings. Aaron Page went 2-for-3 at the plate. GAME ON … The Pirates are on the road next weekend, visiting the Coquitlam Reds on Saturday (June 28) and then the Vancouver Cannons on Sunday in New Westminster.
The Nanaimo Acme Timbermen swept a top-of-thestandings showdown and are firmly in first place. The Acme Painting Timbermen senior B lacrosse team (12-1-1) beat the TriCity Bandits (9-3) by scores of 8-5 and 9-7 on Saturday and Sunday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. “We had one goal in mind and that was to get four points for the weekend against a tough team…” said Cody Keating, an alternate captain on the Acme T-men. “Those were two character wins over a really well-coached and defensive team so it was a huge weekend for us.” Goalie Nick Patterson played both games for Nanaimo and especially came up big in Sunday’s win, when he was called on to make 44 saves. “Nick was phenomenal … he just shut the door,” said Mike Maughan, coach of the Acme Timbermen. “The team just took that and went with it. Both sides of the ball played really well and we just had a strong, smart third period and it helped us close the game out.” Maughan said his D guys are building chemistry and said their aggressive play set a tone during the weekend. On offence, players were persistent, attacking in different ways until they found success. Keating scored four goals in Sunday’s victory and Jon Diplock and Devon Casey each had two goals and three assists. The day before, Diplock had two goals and two helpers and Ryan Forslund also scored a pair. To see two colour action photos, please visit www. nanaimobulletin.com/ sports. GAME ON … The Acme Timbermen play just one game next weekend, visiting the Valley Rebels on Sunday (June 29) … The team has one remaining regular-season home game, a matchup against the Ladner Pioneers on July 6 at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Initial results positive for kelp reforestation
I
SEAWEED FORESTS absorb carbon dioxide, provide food source. BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Citizen scientists were all smiles as they caught their first glimpse of young kelp bobbing beneath Gabriola Island’s Clark Bay. “I had snorkeled down before we planted the spores ... and observed very little life and no kelp whatsoever,” said Nancy Laird, a Help the Kelp volunteer working to reforest kelp beds off Gabriola Island. “Six months later, there were actually small kelp plants. “When you are 20 feet under the water you can’t go whoopee, but I guess I let out a few more
bubbles from my regulator.” Help the Kelp, a group of citizen scientists, tested a new technique last summer to replant kelp with hopes of helping to fight the loss of the underwater beds. Floating bull kelp canopies are considered critical ocean habitat, absorbing carbon dioxide and providing a food source for urchins and crabs and shelter for juvenile fish. But ecologists along the northwest coast have been concerned about its unexplained disappearance and are trying to turn the tide. Help the Kelp plotted existing kelp canopies on Google Earth last year to monitor trends and experimented with a replanting process that saw volunteers take strips of sori from healthier kelp beds and drop them in a weighted buoy at locations around Gabriola.
The hope was they would release spores onto the ocean floor where they would reproduce and begin to grow into new forests. Divers had their first glimpse of the success of their effort in the spring and while they are cautious about saying how well it worked, they did note kelp is growing where it hadn’t before. “It’s very promising,” said Michael Mehta, a member of Help the Kelp. Once the kelp reaches the surface volunteers will plot the canopies and compare the results against last year’s maps to measure the change. “It will give us definitive evidence that not only it worked but to what extent it worked,” Mehta said. Another replanting effort is expected this summer. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Homeowners and businesses are beginning to install solar systems, delightfully forcing their power meters to run backward. These systems typically deliver a better return on investment than the stock market average – and certainly at a higher rate than GICs. A Vancouver Island company is now manufacturing solar heat pumps. Combining solar panels with conventional heat pumps these units can heat our buildings and water about five to eight times more efficiently than do typical sources of heat. The return on investment ranges from four per cent to 15 per cent per year, tax-free. Better yet, all solar systems in B.C. are PST free, a seven-per cent incentive.
