Batter up!! The 2014 Grand Forks International (GFI) baseball tournament is finally upon us. After months of preparation including a year off in 2013, the GFI kicked off today (Wednesday) with a 1:30 p.m. game between the Nanaimo Coalminers and the North West Honkers. In all, there are three games today plus an ALS fundraiser exhibition game between two youth teams. Taking the field at 7 p.m. are the Grand Forks Babe Ruth Juniors and the Castlegar Warriors. The youth game is followed by the opening game for the closest team, the Trail Orioles. The Orioles face the West Coast Guns at 8 p.m. Organizer Joan Thomas told the Gazette earlier in the week that preparations for the GFI have gone well and the organizing committee is ready for some ball. “Everything is looking good,” she said. “We’ve had a few changes in teams but that always happens. I was down at the park earlier and everything is looking really good. We’ve been getting lots of positive feedback around the community.” Thursday sees five games, plus the opening ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. There are another five games in the round-robin portion on both Friday and Saturday. After the round robin, eight teams make it to the money round which goes Sunday with four games. Three games are played on Monday including

the championship final at 2:30 p.m. Of course, baseball is about more than just the game. The GFI has free bingo during all 25 games. People can win some cool prizes donated by local businesses right from their seats. There’s a family-friendly zone behind right field with shade and seating where parents can watch their children, enjoy the games and visit with their friends all at the same time. Also for the kids are plenty of activities such as the Toss-a-Ball for ALS, Run the Bases, and meet and greet with the players. There’s also plenty of tasty food available at the concession stands. The Hard Ball Café, located under the grandstand, has a full menu to help keep you cheering through the whole tour-

nament. There’s also a smaller concession in the large blue building with soft drinks, ice cream, popcorn and more. In addition, you can also find some great GFI souvenirs to help remember the good times. Be sure to check out the GFI Hall of Fame located in the blue building where you can find photos and information about players who went on to perform in the major leagues. Thomas said the tournament truly has something for everyone. As for picking a favourite, she is a little more reluctant to make a selection. “It’s hard—they’re all good,” said Thomas. “This time of year they have different access to college players than we’ve seen in the past when we had it in September. It makes it really hard to predict.” All games and events are at James Donaldson Park.

An assortment of residents, stakeholders, developers and more came out to gallery 2 for the City of Grand Forks’ Development Showcase. The showcase featured three different presentations for investors including a development lands overview by Doug Allin, city administrative officer, and James Kay of Focus Engineering. The presentation talked about how Grand Forks is looking into selling several city-owned properties. In all, there are 114 properties in Grand Forks that are available with 66 of those being owned

by the city. Kay told the Gazette he was brought in by the city to give advice to staff and to prepare the poster boards, and help prepare the analysis of the properties. “From here staff will be going to different industry groups,” he said. “We’re affiliated with a development industry group, the home builders’ group, the construction association—all of these industry groups where we can take this information and showcase Grand Forks. That’ll be the next step for staff and for the showcase.” Mayor Brian Taylor said the showcase was well attended and was good chance for people to

POLICE BRIEFS Battery charger stolen

On June 18 at 1:41 p.m., RCMP received a call about the theft of a battery charger for a mobility scooter from a shed on 68th Ave. “The complainant believes it was stolen in the last three or four days,” said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. “The shed was originally believed to have been locked but they’re not sure. The lock in the shed was undamaged.” There are no witnesses or suspects at this time.

If you’re wondering what to do with your old, unwanted small appliances such as power tools, sewing machines, treadmills and many more electrical products, look no further. The Grand Forks Bottle Depot accepts small appliances and more through the B.C. ElectroRecycle program. In fact, the small appliance program has been available in Grand Forks since 2011. On hand at the depot on May 19 were program ambassadors Anna McDonald and Hilary Falk, who are touring through Southern Interior B.C. “The program is the small appliance and power tool recycling program—it’s province-wide,” said McDonald. “We’re really excited. The program has grown to 140 depots and we accept almost 400 products and each of those products is free to drop off. You come up to the depot and drop it off for free and that way it keeps it out of the landfill which is awesome.” Falk said the program has been going since 2011 and has been very successful.

“People have responded to it very well,” she said. “People are excited that they can keep these products out of the landfill and also that it’s free. It makes it super-easy for people and it’s really accessible.” Some of the items that people can drop off include microwaves, toasters, blow dryers, vacuum cleaners, and power tools such

as table saws and drills, as well as coffee makers. The Grand Forks Bottle Depot is located at 7816 Donaldson Drive. Summer hours are: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The depot also accepts certain electronics such as computers and TVs through the Encorp Pacific program.

City Hall ready for reconstruction phase CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Grand Forks city councillors and staff members were on hand Friday afternoon for an open house at City Hall. Work crews have finished the initial clean-up of the old building after a devastating fire gutted most of the main floor. Residents were able to see into the stripped down building and look at poster boards of the plans of the reconstructed City Hall. “As you can see, the interior of City Hall is finally prepped to begin the rebuilding of its interior,” said Mayor Taylor in a speech. “As council and staff endured through the initial cleanup and then experienced a second phase of remediation, when it was discovered that there was additional lead paint which needed to be removed. In addition, more work was required to bring the exterior walls up to the current building code.” Taylor said that council and staff will be relieved to see one of Grand Forks’ most precious landmarks restored back to its formal glory and more. “The city is currently in the process of choosing and awarding the successful proponent to reconstruct City Hall,” said Taylor. He added that work will commence soon after awarding the contract. “We are hopeful that we may showcase the building at the inaugural meeting of the new city council this December and invite all of you to be a part of the occasion,” said Taylor.

On June 19 at 7:25 a.m., RCMP received a report of a stolen 1997 silver Ford Explorer from an address on Silver Ave. “The vehicle was subsequently recovered in Kelowna with an individual known to police driving the vehicle,” said Harrison. “The complainant in this matter decided they wished no charges to be laid as they knew the person who took the vehicle. So it was basically a ‘take auto without consent,’ not a theft of auto.” Mailboxes vandalized On June 20, police received a report from Canada Post that a number of rural mailboxes on Danshin Village Road had been pried open. “It was presumed that contents had been stolen; however, it is unknown what contents were there,” said Harrison. “The mailboxes have minimal damage and just need the locks replaced.” The damage is estimated at approximately $90.

On June 21 at 3:55, RCMP received a call of a backpack being stolen from a bicycle parked outside the legion. “The complainant rode to the legion on his bike and placed his backpack in the basket,” said Harrison. “When he came out he noticed the backpack was missing.” There are no witnesses or suspects at this time. Inside the backpack was a pack of cigarettes, a bottle of wine, a can of pop and a wallet with identification, said Harrison. Time to play ball

After a year hiatus, the Grand Forks International (GFI) baseball tournament is back in a big way. The GFI is one of those great events that happens once or twice a year that brings a community together. The level of ball is fantastic and whether you’re a veteran GFI fan or a “rookie” attending your first one, it’s sure to be a great experience. The fact that the committee is able to attract top level teams to our little burg is interesting enough. It’s great the level of attention the tournament brings to our community and the money that comes in from visiting teams and fans. The teams coming in routinely compete for provincial, state and even national titles. The Seattle Studs are the 2013 National Baseball Congress World Series champions. The Langley Blaze are two-time defending B.C. senior baseball champions. A look at the hall of fame shows all of the major leaguers who played at past GFIs including: Dodger pitching ace Josh Beckett; former three time MLB all-star and Trail native Jason Bay; and Yankee shortstop Brendan Ryan, to name just a few. Organizing an event with 12 out-oftown teams playing 25 games over six days takes a small army. As you can imagine, organizer Joan Thomas and her crew of nearly 300 volunteers have spent several months and countless man-hours making sure everything goes just right. So whether you’re heading out to the ball field to catch some future major leaguers in action or whether you’re just there for the atmosphere, just make sure you’re there. There’s nothing quite like a hot dog, popcorn and a cold beverage at the field as you cheer on your favourite team. So be sure to get out to James Donaldson Park and support this great event that brings such vibrancy to our community.

SUBMISSION guidelines Submissions for community news can be dropped off at the newspaper between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, or emailed to editor@ grandforksgazette.ca. Please ensure time sensitive material is sent in at least two weeks in advance of the scheduled event. Photos for the community pages can be taken by the charitable organization receiving the donation, though a Grand Forks Gazette photographer is available for individual contributions greater than $1,000 and corporate donations greater than $5,000. Submissions to the community pages will be published in as timely a manner as possible. Every effort will be made to ensure the publication of all contributions, as space allows. If you have questions, please call 442-2191.

Outcome will shape education for a long time Second Opinion JIM HOLTZ Far from me to offer advice. However.... as a retired teacher with 33 years of service, 10 years of retirement in which to contemplate that service, and an active critical faculty that seems unable to remain silent, I have to say that my former colleagues are going about their strike in the wrong way. During the past week I put enough miles on my car to take me through four school districts. As I passed by schools in three of them, I noticed that quite a few teachers and their supporters were reclining in beach/lounge chairs, drinking coffee, applying suntan lotion and talking amongst themselves as cars drove by.

True, they waggled their strike signs with the hand that was not holding a coffee cup or lotion bottle, but I have to admit that the effort they were making seemed half hearted, especially since their leaders have maintained that the issues in question are crucial to the future of education in B.C. I know first hand how important class size and composition is to the success of public education. I know the value of individualized instruction as well, and I certainly know that the current government and its ministers, obsessed as they are with economic issues, the advancement of free enterprise and the evil of creeping socialism, have little understanding of public education, the learning process or the role of teachers in that process. I know as well that the public in general has only a dim understanding of educa-

tion issues and that they aren’t going to gain additional understanding from government ads, websites or brochures. The teachers union has to be the accurate source. However, members of the public will not turn to the union for information if the members do not appear to be focussed and sincere in their cause. As a participant in two strikes in my teaching career—strike captain in my area of School District 23—there was an understanding among all on the picket line that we were not to sit down but always keep moving and engage the public with at least eye contact as they drove/walked/cycled by. Good public relations opens the door to increased understanding. Instead of showing their president gabbing about nonexistent progress in negotiations, the union should show

the public what an elementary classroom would like if the teachers didn’t spend hundreds of their own dollars on books, music, posters, art materials, etc. The public should be told over and over how wide the range of ability is in every public school classroom, how broad the spectrum of English language skills in many, how great the difference in emotional and social development and how vital the work of teacher aides and support workers. They should know that teachers gave up salary increases in the ’90s to fund smaller class sizes and workable class composition. The information is not getting out adequately, which is too bad. Letters

Opinion

to the editor

True context of text provided Editor, The Gazette: In the Letters to the Editor section in the June 11 issue of the Gazette, there appeared a letter entitled: “We can’t be sure about water use”. The last paragraph offers the following: “And, as stated in one of the plans, ‘…the cost to implement the (universal water metering) program is higher than other programs per volume of water saved…’” For the sake of providing the true context, the link to the Water Conservation Plan is below, followed by the paragraph from which the letters’ author extracted that portion of the sentence: grandforks.ca/wp-content/uploads/KWL-Water-Conservation-Plan-Final-Report.pdf

From page 5-2: “The first water conservation measure that should be evaluated is universal water metering. As mentioned in Section 4.2, the cost to implement the program is higher than other programs per volume of water saved, but the potential savings is the highest. “In addition to the high potential savings the installation of water meters would allow the city to manage their system more efficiently, as well as track the implementation of other water conservation measures.” Councillor Gary Smith, Grand Forks

Traditional voting methods secure

Editor, The Gazette: To date, we have had the most secure voting procedures available! Why would we want to change that?! We’ve been told that electronic vote counting would likely be faster... but, may there be some unintended consequences? The quality of electronic voting machines cannot be determined “because their code is proprietary and they won’t let anybody examine it,” according to electronic security specialist Aviel D. Rubin, PhD. Electronic vote counting is not transparent; the public can’t watch and check the counting inside the black box. By comparison, with traditional voting, scrutineers do watch poll clerks count the paper ballots. A lot of trust would be put in these machines— not to fail, not to be programmed maliciously, not to have been tampered with. Some voting machines that were already certified and in use were later found to have gross design and programming errors. On the verifiedvoting.org website, the machine our city is considering is described as having a memory card that is sensitive: “Corrupt memory cards may be able to introduce viruses, cause the main election server to crash and falsify votes. Access to the memory card should be controlled, monitored and logged at all times.” Some versions of this electronic voting system

have had issues with... intermittent screen freezes, system lock ups and shut downs; paper feed misalignment with optical sensor; failure to log all normal and abnormal system events; skewing of the ballot resulting in a negative effect on system accuracy... These are complex voting systems with many potential points of failure. Such challenges could lead to unexpected delays, increased costs for hiring IT technicians, as well as the potential for invalid vote counts. We’d like to believe that everything would turn out well, but why take the risk? Wouldn’t it be wiser to keep our traditional voting system, a system that has served our community well for all these years? The local economy would be boosted due to poll clerks being hired to count ballots... and, once again, we’d get to feel the excitement of waiting for the election results! Wouldn’t if feel good to be able to trust that our votes were counted, and that we had a truly democratic election?! Do share your views on this matter with our mayor and city councillors as soon as possible, by visiting or phoning City Hall (250-442-8266) and asking for their contact information. Time to restore decorum

The time has come for the residents of Grand Forks who have raised objections to the installation of water meters to cease and desist with their tirade at council meetings and in the local media. They have made their opposition clear for several months. They don’t want meters, period! Yet they persist. The ongoing discussion of the negative impacts of water meters has become redundant and it is time for the detractors to rest their case. The contract for the installation of water meters across the city has been let and by the end of 2015 they will be in place. No amount of camRousing paigning against them now will the Rabble cause the council to reverse its deciROY RONAGHAN sion or cancel the contract. The handling of the water meter issue has been troublesome, particularly because of the noticeable lack of decorum at city council meetings. Yes, decorum: good taste in conduct; polite behaviour; respect for the council meeting setting; respect for the council and staff; and respect for the governance process overall. The detractors have been able to attend meetings to make their case yet they have shown disrespect for the process on several occasions. Any member of the community has two opportunities to participate during council meetings. They can make a formal presentation as a delegation or they can ask a couple questions during the “question period.” During Committee of the Whole meetings of council they can participate in the discussion. Making a presentation as a delegation requires pre-planning and following a time line. Council must be informed in advance of its meetings that a delegation will appear. A summary of the presentation must also be submitted ahead of time. There is work involved and the advantage of a presentation is that it is made note of in council minutes. Asking questions about matters that have been discussed by councilors requires no pre-preparation, but does require attentiveness during meetings. The council’s question period was originally restricted to a couple questions related to the council’s agenda yet every imaginable strategy has been employed during several months of meetings to make it a time for longer than necessary presentations. Does following the rules restrict public input? Not at all. Individuals can make phone calls to councillors and the mayor, send e-mails to city hall or make appointments to talk with the mayor, councillors or staff. They can also write letters to the editors of local on-line or print media. What more could they want? The restoration of decorum at council meetings is overdue. Doing so will be to the advantage of everyone: city council, city staff, the general public and the people who wish to be involved. The goal of recognizing council chambers as a special setting is not to suppress free speech. If it is anyone’s intent to vent, they have other venues in which to do it. However, if they want publicity, they may get some satisfaction from being video taped at council meetings. Though the foregoing comments are focused on the behaviour of individuals who wish to ask questions or make presentations at council meetings, respect for the setting and the process applies equally to the mayor and councillors. They must follow the rules too. Residents of Grand Forks are fortunate in having a council that is open to discussion of the issues. That is not the case in many other jurisdictions where you can be seen but not heard. Not all councils are as open and transparent in the way they conduct council business as the Grand Forks City Council. That circumstance deserves the respect of everyone who attends council meetings. Council meeting attendees can familiarize themselves with the rules by reading A Bylaw to Govern Meetings of the Council of the City of Grand Forks Bylaw No. 1889, 2009.

see what the city has to offer. “It was a really good turnout,” he said. “We had different people than we normally have at our regular meetings. What I witnessed was a really clear presentation of why we’re doing it and defining the difference between strategic properties and surplus properties and potentially commercial properties. The presentation really laid out the opportunity for entrepreneurs and hopefully there will be an uptake. Certainly from the level of interest, I would expect a follow up from a number of the people there.” Taylor credits staff for having the diligence to put the properties up for sale at this time. “We haven’t had that diligence in terms of being ‘open for business’ that we have now,” he said. “It’s part of an overall strategy that council and administration have put together to really capitalize on the assets we have and to promote the community as being ‘open for business.’” The ‘open for business’ tagline is in line with the city’s new mantra of being run like a business, said Taylor. “Clearly, if you were running a business wouldn’t you look at what assets you had that weren’t making you any revenue and weighing you down? We have properties that could be tax-producing properties if they were not in our hands but in someone else’s hands.” Later sessions dealt with the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and how foreign investors can invest in the region. The final session talked about how

businesses can use the PNP program to bring in skilled immigrant workers. Wendy McCulloch, director of Community Futures Boundary, said the PNP sessions went very well. “We had about 16 actual employers at the second session (skilled immigrant workers),” she said. “Folks who were looking for welders and fabricators and all those skilled trades that we

aren’t able to attain locally for whatever reason. There was huge interest in it.” McCulloch said they were able to help connect some of the employers with the people involved in running the PNP program. “There was some really good information that was provided to the local business community,” she said.

The Saini family would like to thank all of our Indo-Canadian friends & families for helping us to celebrate our 2nd Annual Father’s Day Event on Sunday, June 15. Without your help and participation it wouldn’t have been possible. We would also like to thank the media – the Grand Forks Gazette, Mountain FM, and the Grand Forks Engrosser for promoting the event. We had a very successful and positive day, providing traditional East Indian food to upwards of 500 people. Above all, we would like to thank all who attended. Thanks to you we raised $3,000.11 which was shared between the Elks’ Children’s Fund and the Grand Forks Volunteer Firefighters’ Association.

God Bless everybody, and hope to see you all next year.

Councillors find conference beneficial CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

A pair of Grand Forks city councillors got the chance to travel to Richmond to participate in an economic development conference. Most of the participants at the conference were economic development officers (EDO) for their communities. Councillors Bob Kendel and Gary Smith attended the event. Kendel, who heads the city’s economic development advisory committee, said it was a great opportunity to meet with the EDOs from other communities and hear about their cities challenges and how they are dealing with them. “It’s probably one of the best network-

RDKB sees personnel changes SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary has gone through some changes in the past few months. Personnel changes at both the board and senior management level have kept things lively. “As an organization we have to be prepared to manage change,” said RDKB Board Chair Grace McGregor. “This year it seems that we have a little more than usual.” The board has seen four changes in 2014. The Village of Fruitvale made a change in its representation, appointing Mayor Patricia Cecchini to the board to replace Councillor Larry Gray. Councillor Don Duclos of the Village of Montrose was replaced by Mayor Joe Danchuk and Councillor Barry Noll of the City of Greenwood was replaced by Mayor Nipper Kettle. Most recently with the resignation of Councillor Kathy Wallace, Mayor Greg Granstrom of Rossland was appointed to the board of directors.

Thank You

“The board thanks Larry, Don, Barry and Kathy for their hard work at the board table, and looks forward to working with the new Directors,” McGregor said. At the senior management level change has also been occurring. “The Board recognized that we must have the pieces in place to ensure that we can continue to offer services in a responsible, effective and efficient manner. To that purpose the board has approved a succession plan,” McGregor said. “It has been put to use in recent months.” The changes to date are: Beth Burget has been appointed general manager of finance; Theresa Lenardon has been named manager of corporate administration following the announcement of Elaine Kumar’s retirement. The board is also very pleased that Donna Dean will be assuming new duties as the manager of planning and development, and that Maureen Forster will be joining the organization as the new executive assistant.

It was a wonderful day for a birthday party on Saturday. Grand Forks’ gallery 2 may have turned 30 but from the looks of things, she is as spry as ever. The folks at the gallery celebrated with a fun day that started with speeches from curator Ted Fogg and Grand Forks Mayor Brian Tay-

The new Ronald McDonald House BC opens in June. A home away from home for seriously ill children receiving treatment at BC Children’s Hospital, the new and bigger House has enough room to welcome 73 families every day, keeping 2,500 families per year together when it matters most.

lor. There were lots of fun events for the kids as well with a fishing pond, egg races, bean bag toss and more. In addition, hot dogs and cupcakes were available for everyone. The day also included an opening reception in the west gallery in the afternoon for Boundary artist Heather Hollingsworth, who was on hand to answer questions and discuss her art.

More than 200 kids were out on the Boundary Central Secondary School soccer fields last Saturday—and if you counted all the grandparents, parents and coaches in attendance, the population of Midway was probably doubled. It was the wind-up of the spring schedule for the Boundary Youth Soccer Association (BYSA). The league features teams ranging in age from five to 15; and Kicks 4 Kids (K4K) is set up for the younger set. “It was a great day for it,” said BYSA director Bob MacLean. “You needed a little bit of sunscreen but other than that it was perfect.” MacLean, who got involved to help his grandkids have access to soccer, said the league is structured to help kids develop their skills. “Everything is age appropriate with smaller pitches, goals and teams for the K4K group moving up with bigger fields and more rules for the older teams.” All coaches and referees are certified and parents are encouraged to cheer for both teams—you don’t cheer for one specific child all of the time. “We want all of the kids to feel like they have contributed,” said MacLean. “It is very affordable—the kids will buy cleats but the league provides the uniforms, balls and nets. We need more volunteers— and we seem to have a hard time getting coaches from the West End.” MacLean explained that the fall league is a drop-in once a week at 6:30 in Grand Forks. “Just show up and there will be a ref there for you and parents to care of things— so you drop in, join a team and away you go.” More information about the BYSA is available online at boundaryyouthsoccer. com.

There was plenty of action and smiles on Saturday at the Boundary Youth Soccer round-up in Midway. (Above) The Blue Breakers take on the Orange Strikers in U11 action. Triathlon at Lake a real community affair CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The 10th annual Pharmasave Christina Lake Triathlon was held Sunday morning and featured 115 athletes vying in swim, bike and run portions of the popular event. The kids (7-13) went first as they stormed the public beach at 8:30 a.m. followed by the adults an hour later. The Kidsprint division saw kids in teams or as individuals swim 100 metres, bike six kilometres and/or run two kilometres. The adult division featured adults in teams or as individuals swim 800 metres, bike 20 kilometres and/or run five kilometres. Both races were kicked off by a shotgun start from RDKB Area C (Christina Lake) director Grace McGregor. McGregor has been involved with the triathlon for nine of the 10 years and says it’s a great event for the Lake. “I’ve been here for awhile with the triathlon,” she said. “I’ve seen it grow. I’ve watched families start to participate. I’ve watched groups come together for it. It’s just a

fun, fun thing.” McGregor said the turnout was great and the weather couldn’t have been better. “The whole race has been really nice,” she said. “If you watch, there are all age groups out there. It’s probably one of the neatest things I’ve seen for Christina Lake. There’s homecoming, but this is a different thing. There’s exercise, there’s competition, and fun.” Adult Sprint Event 76 Participants 1st Male – Jackson Konkin, Trail, 1:14:17 1st Female – Amanda Sjoden, Grand Forks 1:22:00 1st Team – The Go Girls, Grand Forks, 1:28:56 (Laura Lewis, Krista Chursinoff, Keely Devries

Christina Lake and the Grand Forks Recreation Commission would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who came out this past Sunday to help with the 10th Annual Christina Lake Triathlon. We look forward to seeing you all next year, same time, and same place.

well but usually halfway through the game we get better. So we did and we caught up.” After the credit union went ahead early, Unifab caught up and tied the score in the fifth inning; however, the credit union team weathered the storm and pulled ahead late in the game. “If we get nervous and frustrated we don’t play the best,” said credit union catcher Chloe Skerritt. “If we all stick together as a team then we’re fine.” The senior fastpitch division started in April with three teams rotating between games twice per week. A total of 53 players were registered this year in girls fastpitch in both junior and senior—a number which was down slightly from last year, said president Lee-Anna Klassen. “The teams were fairly well matched and there were a lot of close games throughout the season,” she

said. “Unfortunately, with work schedules and other activities, we sometimes struggled to field teams and there were a couple of forfeits as a result.” Klassen says the theme of the league is to play fastpitch softball as competitively as possible while still having fun and exemplifying good sportsmanship. Klassen is stepping down as president this year after many years and was awarded with a card from Terry Nuyten. She played in the league when she was 10 years old and said it was much bigger in those days. “We used to have at least four teams and we also played against teams from Curlew and Republic,” said Klassen. “Each year we selected an all-star team that would compete in tournaments after the regular season ended.” Klassen said BGFA is always looking for volunteer coaches and umpires.

Reading club is ‘funny business!’ JACLYN SALTER

to the Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks and District Public Library invites kids of all ages to join the 2014 BC Summer Reading Club. This year’s theme is “Funny Business!” Registration is free and goes from June 24 to July 5. Kids receive a special reading record to keep track of their reading—if they complete their reading record they’ll be awarded a special Summer Reading Club medal. Summer Reading Club motivates kids to read (or be read to) regularly, so it helps to maintain or improve read-

ing skills while school is out. It makes reading fun by inviting kids to read what they want. The expert staff at the Grand Forks and District Public Library can help kids find just what they like, whether it’s a print book, audiobook, ebook or magazine. This awesome free program has games, books and crafts that revolve around a weekly theme, such as cornstarch slime and mad lib fairy tales. We’re also pleased to offer Buddy Reading again; a half an hour session that takes place after the regular program where kids get a chance to read by themselves, with a friend, or with one of the coordinators.

Summer Reading Club reaches more than 85,000 B.C. kids every summer. The program is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association, with financial support from Libraries Branch, Ministry of Education and the RBC Foundation. We’re also grateful for the support from the local business community— thank you for the donations and promoting our club! Ask us anything, really! Patsy Polly Horkoff Patsy Polly Horkoff was born on April 22th, 1936 in Grand Forks, B.C. to the Doukhobor family of Vasya and Polly (Novakshonoff) Pudmoreff. The Pudmoreff family lived in the Doukhobor Ootischenia Community of the Kootenay area and that is where Patsy grew-up and received her upbringing. She was the middle child of a family of three children – sisters Mary and Lucy. Their family lived in the village which was located in the middle of their Ootischenia Community and in that village lived the families of Gretchens, potapoffs, Zarikoffs and Masloffs. Patsy received her limited English language education in the school which was located not too far from their village and also studied the Russian language which was provided by their community members. Her memorable Russian teachers were Laura Makortoff and Alexsandar Fyodordvich Zuckerberg. There were many neighbouring villages in their community, therefore Patsy grew-up with many friends her age. Within their midst, older boys and girls were always present from whom they observed and received guidance. From an early age she took part in sports and cultural activities. In her teen years Patsy participated in their community evening youth meetings and it’s choir. She was also a member of a specially organized choir, “Khor Priziva”, which performed at local communities and for the English public in Trail, B.C. In her younger years, Patsy worked at different places – picking cherries in Robson, B.C., gathering berries in Creston, B.C., and working in the vegetable fields in Grand Forks, B.C. Patsy also worked for three years at the facility for elders – Mt. Saint Frances in Nelson, B.C. In 1958 Patsy met a young lad named, George William Horkoff. They fell in love and on April 4th, 1959, they were united in marriage. For the first years together, they lived with George’s parents; Bill and Mary Horkoff, while they were building themselves their home on Carson Road in Grand Forks, B.C. They were blessed with three daughters – Gail, Nina and Tammy. Patsy together with George looked after their home, yard and garden. After their children were grown and set out on their own, Patsy worked at several places – Malloff Hardware Store, Yale Restaurant and as a custodian at the Grand Forks school system. She was a life-long member of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ and a member of their local community Christyakoyoe, where she took part in their youth evening meetings and other activities. In earlier times, Patsy served on the children Sunday school committee and for two years dedicated her time as a teacher at their spiritual meetings. For many years, Patsy together with George were members in the youth choir which later was renamed the ‘Friendship Choir’. The choir preformed locally, yearly at the Youth Festivals, also performed concerts in Calgary, Vancouver and in the Okanagan. The choir recorded several long-playing albums. Patsy served on the U.S.C.C. Ladies Cooking Group and Ladies Bread Committee. In later years, her and George were members of the U.S.C.C. Psalmist Choir, where they took part in different organizational activities and assistance at funeral services. In 1981, Patsy and George were faced with an even of tragic proportions when their daughter Tammy suffered life changing injuries after a car accident with her friends. Patsy and George put all their efforts into helping Tammy acquire the best treatment for her including a suggestion to seek help from doctors in Moscow, Russia. The family was able to make success and after consultation with specialists, it was recommended that Tammy live in Vancouver where she will be close to her doctors and the special care she requires. In the year of 2000, Patsy retired. Her and George sold their home on Carson Road and moved to the Riverside Apartments. In her retirement, on many occasions she visited her daughter Tammy and also the rest of her children and grandchildren. Patsy devoted twelve year, serving for the Boundary Community Hospice Society. George and Patsy were fortunate to visit the Hawaiian Islands and regional and provincial localities. In the month of September 2013, Patsy felt ill and was diagnosed with a serious illness. A week ago her health worsened and she was admitted to Boundary Hospital, where in the morning of June 13th, 2014, with her family by her side, Patsy peacefully passed away. She was 78 years of age. She was predeceased by her parents William and Polly Pudmoreff. She is survived by her husband George with whom she lived for 55 years, her children – Gail (Humberto Galvao) of Grand Forks, B.C., Nina Smith and Tammy Little; both of Vancouver, B.C., 5 grandchildren – Khea (Tetsu), Cassidy, Shaye, Holly and Tasha, 2 great-grandchildren Missha and Hyugd. She also lives behind her sisters Mary Voykin and Lucy Jmieff both of Castlegar, B.C. and numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Patsy was a kind and gentle wife, mother and grandmother. She was a hardworking a peace-loving lady. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family, relatives and friends. The funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Baker family of Grand Forks Funeral Home gffh@shaw.ca. May God accept her soul into His heavenly abode, and may she rest in peace. I Have a Place in Heaven Please don’t sing sad songs for me, My life on earth was very good, Forget your grief and fears, As earthly lives can go, For I am in a perfect place, But paradise is so much more Away from pain and tears … Than anyone can know … I’m far away from hunger, My heart is filled with happiness, And hurt and want and pride. And sweet rejoicing, too. I have a place in heaven, To walk with God is perfect peace, With the Master on my side. A joy forever new.

My wife and partner of 37 years passed away quietly in her sleep early in the morning of Thursday, 19-June-2014, after a brief encounter with cancer. Karin Paul (Froese) was born on November 1st, 1942 in Lauck, East Prussia; an area that is now part of Poland. In 1945 Karin and her family fled to West Germany, ahead of the advancing Russian Army. In December 1951 Karin’s family immigrated to Canada, settling in the Fraser Valley. In 1961 Karin graduated from Chilliwack Senior Secondary School, but she returned to do Grade 13 before starting nurse’s training at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1965. In 1967 she married Tony Paul and gave birth to Leonard Paul in January 1973. In 1974 she left Tony and Vancouver, moving first to Saltspring Island and then Victoria. In 1976 she met George Longden and in 1977 they formed a contractual partnership, which exists to this day. In 1978 they moved to Campbell River, where Karin worked in the hospital as a registered nurse and in the school system where she worked as an Educational Aide. In 1988 they moved to Grand Forks and started farming, and both worked to support their farming habit. Karin has always been very creative, expressing her artistic side in clothing that she sewed or knit or crocheted, then in pottery and ceramics and more recently in stained glass. Karin has also been an avid gardener. In Grand Forks Karin has always had a huge garden producing such abundance that large amounts of home canned produce was always in demand when we visited our children and grand children in the lower mainland. Spirituality has been a major life goal for Karin, from her teenage years to the present. It has manifested itself throughout her life: in the continual search for answers to life’s bigger questions as well as through her hospice work, both here and in other communities. Karin lived her life to the fullest, embracing all that life has to offer. We have had 37 wonderful years together and I shall miss her greatly. A private celebration of her life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Phoenix Foundation in her name.

Don Mott Suddenly June 17th, at age 59 Don Mott passed away at his home in Christina Lake B.C. He will be sadly missed by his wife Darcy and beloved Grandchildren Samantha and Ashton Vandal who he helped raise since the tragic passing of their Father Gerry in 2006. His calm and gentle manner and guidance helped Sam and Ashton to be the children they are today and will become tomorrow. In his last days he was proud to watch his Granddaughter graduate and be accepted into Selkirk College. An avid NASCAR fan who loved the lakes, rivers and to fish with his pal Whiskey. Left to mourn his passing, are his large family in Chatham-Kent Ontario and Edmonton. Sisters Crystal, Tracy, sister-in-law Evelynn of Illinois, Daniel Parisien and Claudette. His extended family here Brian Graham and his son Connor. Numerous friends too many to mention at the Lake and in Vancouver. Cremation has taken place, interment at future date. As per his wishes no services held. But as wanted that all to remember him as “Happy Don” in their own way. Party and carry on. “Love you and miss you Grandpa.”
