A man was found dead inside a west Maple Ridge townhouse late Thursday after it was ravaged by fire. It started in a unit at 12075 – 207A St. around 11 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing flames from several kilometres away. By the time fire trucks arrived, the townhouse was engulfed in flames. Assistant fire chief Mark Smitton said a neighbour was the first person to spot flames shooting out of a ground-floor window. “We thought there might be a cat or dog inside, so we knocked the fire down and went in,” Smitton added. It took 25 firefighters to get the blaze under control. Firefighters found the man while conducting a search on the second floor of the townhouse. The B.C. Coroner’s office was alerted. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.

impasse between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the provincial government. George Serra, president of the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association, clarified that teachers had agreed to give students a “shortened onepager” while the union was in rotating strikes. However, when full strikes began last week, all school work ceased, including final grades. Kanaka Creek elementary, though, could see a return to normalcy. Serra has asked the BCTF leadership whether teachers can lift their picket line at the school, which

has a balanced calendar with three monthlong breaks. The strike has hit the school in the middle of its third term. About 150 parents and students held a Serra rally on Monday, joining teachers on the picket line. “We want to bring attention to the fact that these kids still have

school left, and we don’t want to be forgotten,” said Deanna Lackey, spokesperson for the school’s parent advisory council. The school’s situation can be declared a special circumstance, and can be exempted from any labour action. Teachers at the school expressed optimism that the strike will end quickly, by June 30, but Lackey is worried because the two sides are no longer bargaining, and respected mediator Vince Ready said the sides are too far apart for him to get involved. Businesses shifting west in Maple Ridge All is going according to the district’s official plan by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

A

fter pouring money and love into the downtown, another area closer to the big malls farther west is popping up in Maple Ridge. A handful of businesses are either relocating or renovating near the corner of 207th Street and Lougheed Highway. “Everything is going according to plan,” said Christine Carter, planning director with the District of Maple Ridge. “The street is starting to look nicer and that’s the gateway to our community.” Carter recently briefed council on the future of Lougheed Highway between the downtown and the border with Pitt Meadows. The development of 207th Street as a thriving retail corner was predicted and encouraged in Maple Ridge’s 2006 official community plan because when people were giving input to the plan, they wanted to protect the downtown and prevent commercial growth from gobbling up the residential areas on Lougheed. In return for preserving the homes and apartments along Lougheed Highway, the plan did allow for a wider variety of auto-oriented shops and services in the more concentrated commercial zones at 207th St., as well as at Laity and 216th streets. The result is the appearance of Brown’s Social House, under construction, a new $7-million Mark’s clothing store, the new Mag-

Mageta Medical Centre is just one of the businesses to open or renovate in the 207th Street area of Lougheed Highway. eta Medical Centre, an expanded Kal Tire operation, a Royal Bank (planned for 203rd Street), a new Carline Muffler shop, a renovated and expanded Marv Jones Honda and a new mall, now the location of Wings Restaurant. Carter said a key part to creating the zone is requiring building guidelines that create an ambience. Buildings are to be built close to the street with parking at the back. Brick, stone and wood exteriors are encouraged while canopies, awnings and overhangs make it eas-

ier for people to get around in bad weather. Landscaping and screening guidelines further add to the attraction of new developments. The changes aren’t happening at downtown’s expense, but foster growth of auto-oriented businesses. Carter added the focus on the downtown is encourage smaller, boutique-style shopping. “I think the downtown is doing really well,” she said. The opening of one of the new shops on 207th St., though, means

the closing of a major store in the downtown. Jeremy Bekar, with Mark’s, wants the new 20,000-sq.-foot building open by next March. “We’ve been looking for new space in the downtown for 10 years and we just couldn’t find it,” he said Tuesday. The new store is almost three times that of its present location on Lougheed Hwy. at 228th Street, where its been for 22 years. The new spot, just east of 207th St., will have easier access and double the amount of parking. Interior de-

sign elements have been borrowed from Maple Ridge’s past to make it unique, Bekar said. He added that the downtown needs to be marketed better and needs anchors, either major stores or attractions, to attract more people. “Show people what your plan is. It’s pretty simple,” he said. Ineke Boekhorst, executive-director of the Maple Ridge Downtown Business Improvement Association, agreed another anchor would be nice, but noted there are three of those in the downtown – Thrifty Foods, Target and London Drugs. The new Club 16 Trevor Linden Fitness centre downtown is another attraction, as is the new Chances Maple Ridge community gaming centre. With the environment in mind, people are starting to return to old habits of parking their cars and walking around to do their shopping. “They are now thinking about the environment. They are thinking about shopping closer to home,” she said. “You go to any mall and the stores are all the same.” With the price of gasoline rising, more people could start cycling to do their shopping. Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce president Terry Becker said the trend for motorists seems to be to head west once they reach Lougheed Highway. That’s drawing businesses in the same direction. As a commuter and motorist, “I’m going to go where it’s easy to park,” she said. “Everybody is busy.” Meanwhile, the Haney Bypass, diverts any eastbound shoppers from downtown.

Renovations planned for burned out apartment building Has been boarded up since fire in December 2012 by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter

The downtown Maple Ridge apartment building that burned in December 2012 is about to be reborn and will be sporting a new look in a year, says the agent for the property. Fire ripped through the top floor of the apartment building at 22355 McIntosh Ave. in the middle of that month and left dozens of people homeless before Christmas. Since then, the building has remained burned out and boarded

up. That’s all about to change. “So basically, it’s going to be a bright new building in there. It should stand out,” said Rajinder Chhina, managing the rebuild project for building owner Parmjit Kaur Sandhu. Chhina said removal of the exterior cladding should start in a few weeks. The dark red, stuccolike material will be replaced with Hardy board, cement-based panelling, in shades of light blue and yellow along with stone in some places. Inside the 21-unit apartment block, the interior has been gutted to the studs, allowing new drywall. New wiring and plumbing, a new fire sprinkler system and a new elevator is also part of the project.

Chhina said building and demolition permits have already been secured. “If everything goes well, we want to start in two weeks.” Other changes include removing some of the concrete walls at the front of the building and improving the entrance. Chhina said increasing the building height to four or five storeys from the present three had been considered, but a new $300,000roof has already been installed. Once complete, plans are to rent out the suites, although it’s also possible they could be sold as strata units. Total cost for the rebuild project will ring in at about $2.5 million. “It’s going to be a nice building. It will be done in one year, max.”

Happy hour arrives in B.C. Minimum drink price $5 a pint by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

Happy hour has arrived in B.C., but some drink prices will actually rise with the government’s new liquor regulations. The provincial government will allow discounted alcoholic beverages designed to attract patrons into drinking establishments. At the same time, Victoria imposed minimum drink prices that will force some outlets to raise their prices. General manager Deanne Hayter said the Billy Miner Pub used to offer a $4.25 pint of Trailblazer Pilsner on Mondays – the most affordable beer on the menu. Under new regulations, the minimum price for a 20-ounce pint is $5. “That’s still pretty reasonable, considering it’s a full 20 ounces,” said Hayter. The minimum price for beer and cider is 25 cents per fluid ounce (28ml). That’s $3 for a 12-ounce sleeve – a price that can already be found at the Haney Public House – while a 20-ounce pint is $5 and a 60-ounce jug is $15. Wine will go for a minimum of 60 cents per ounce, and spirits $2. “There’s not going to be a lot of savings at that rate,” said Andrew Wong, GM of the Black Sheep Pub. He said the pub has Draft Day Wednesdays, offering some brands at lower rates than the new minimums. The lowest allowable price for any alcoholic beverage will be $3 for a single ounce cocktail, five ounce glass of wine

or 12 ounces of beer or cider. Two-for-one specials are still prohibited. These minimums will not apply to catered events, or special occasion licences. “Whether it’s meeting after work for a discounted pint, for example, or enjoying a happy hour cocktail on a Saturday afternoon, these changes create new social opportunities for British Columbians. To balance health and safety, we have put into effect price floors that align with the views expressed by health advocates during our liquor consultations and will help to encourage responsible consumption,” said John Yap, the parliamentary secretary for liquor policy reform. Wong said the Black Sheep will likely try happy hour specials. “They do it a lot in the United States, and it’s really popular there,” he noted. “We’ll be looking at them, for sure.” Not everyone in the industry is going to immediately schedule a happy hour into their business day. Hayter said the Billy Miner has found its customers prefer day-long drink specials, on selected craft beers and other drinks, so those deals will continue. Hayter said the public should consider the liquor law changes in their entirety, and they are generally a good thing, she said. For example, as a consumer, she can now take her children into one of her favourite pubs in Whistler, thanks to changes in laws that used to ban kids. Children must be in the company of an adult, and can stay no later than 10 p.m. “A family can absolutely come in here, and the

bartender can serve the kids juice,” she said. At the same time, if restaurant patrons wish to order drinks only, they are no longer obligated to offer food as well. But they must offer a full menu. On Saturday the government also announced that farmers markets will be allowed to offer samples of beer, wine and spirits, and offer it for sale. The provincial government conducted its liquor policy review with consultation from industry groups and health

Smitton said smoke alarms were not sounding when firefighters arrived, which could mean they were not working. The townhouse did not have sprinklers. “Ridge Meadows RCMP are working with the Maple Ridge Fire Department and B.C. Coroner’s office on this ongoing investigation,” said Insp. Dan Splinter. “The origin of the fire has also not been determined.” A neighbour said the same unit was damaged by fire a few years ago. No smoke alarm was sounding when firefighters arrived. advocates. “There has been a positive reaction, if you look at it in a full-spectrum way,” said Hayter.

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

Ask about spam A new federal anti-spam law will restrict how businesses communicate electronically with current and prospective clients as of July 1. Businesses will then be required to obtain direct consent before sending out commercial electronic messages – emails, texts and those through social media accounts – to clients or prospective customers. The legislation also includes installation of computer programs, alteration of transmission data, and false, misleading electronic representations. Without consent, businesses could face penalties ranging from written warnings to fines as high as $10 million. Some think the rules are too strict, and unfair. The original intent was to stop the spread of the most dangerous electronic messages, such as fraudulent marketing and installation of computer viruses. Now specific information – a mailing address and name of the business sending the message – will have to be included, and a way to unsubscribe. But Canadian businesses, specifically smaller ones, are complaining that the legislation will take away a valuable and affordable marketing tool. They claim the legislation renders small businesses uncompetitive, while doing nothing to stop spam coming in from outside the country. Enforcement is an issue. The Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunication’s Commission has said it doesn’t have the resources to police all infractions and will focus on the most severe violations. Concern exists that some businesses might not even realize they breaking the new rules, that they encourage less productive means of advertising. What’s more productive than free? Businesses can still use electronic means to spread their messages. They just have to ask permission first. – The News Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

A brief history of teacher demands VICTORIA – A few things have changed since the last all-out teacher strike in B.C. That was just two years ago, when the B.C. Teachers’ Federation was coming off its second-ever voluntary agreement with a 16 per cent raise over five B.C. Views years and what the Tom Fletcher union termed an “enhanced” signing bonus of $4,000. Even with special teacher-only top-ups, BCTF members almost rejected the last of the government’s big-spending preOlympic labour deals signed in 2006. By 2012, outraged teachers were back on the legislature lawn, howling for another 16 per cent, with backup vocals provided as usual by HEU, CUPE, BCGEU and other public sector unions that settled for less. Teachers had just sailed through a crippling global recession with a series of raises, but were oblivious to all that. Last week, the protest venue switched to Vancouver, where both the crowd and the demands looked a bit thinner. The signing bonus target is up to $5,000, but the raise is a mere eight per cent over five years (compounded, for those who passed math), plus another huge basket of cash disguised as benefit improvements and so forth. Government negotiators put their total compensation demand at 14.5 per cent.

One obvious dodge: they want the bottom two steps of the teacher salary grid dropped. That’s simply a raise for entry-level teachers. Admittedly those are rare creatures these days with shrinking enrolment and ironclad seniority rules that allow retired teachers to monopolize substitute work. Something else that’s changed since 2012 is that the government has granted the BCTF’s wish to bargain directly with the province. The education ministry executed a takeover of the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association after last year’s election, and installed veteran industrial union negotiator Peter Cameron. He’s backed up by long-time labour specialist Lee Doney, whose task is to keep the teacher deal within Treasury Board limits that have defined all other public sector union settlements. Doney made it clear last week that no mediator is going to come in and “split the baby” as long as the BCTF position is so far beyond the current compensation framework. Despite constant union complaints of low wages and deteriorating working conditions in B.C. schools, education grads remain lined up around the block hoping to get in. Why is that? For those who have been exposed to life outside school for a while, it’s fairly simple. The job market out here in the real world is tough. And here’s how the real world evaluates a teaching job. Start with 189 working days, each nine hours long as per the accepted definition, and the top-heavy seniority list that places the average teacher salary at

around $72,000 a year. That works out to $42.32 an hour, plus a suite of benefits that most private sector employees can only dream about, starting with three months of prime-time vacation. I am occasionally lectured by teachers that the job goes far beyond five hours in the classroom and an additional four hours a day preparing and marking. They throw out different estimates, variously defined. Alas, it’s a salaried job, and we salaried employees in the real world don’t waste a lot of time counting hours. Here’s the work, here’s the deadline, here’s the pay. Take it or leave it.

Here’s the work, here’s the deadline, here’s the pay. Take it or leave it. Consider another union demand that seems to be just another thinly disguised raise. The BCTF wants a large increase in preparation time for elementary school. There are no duties being added here. For this one item, government negotiators calculate the cost to taxpayers at $86.2 million every year by the fifth year of the BCTF proposal. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

THE NEWS/letters ‘Our children deserve the best education’ Editor, The News: Recently I had occasion to visit Blue Mountain elementary for a ceremony and was surprised and impressed by how well behaved all the children were. The teachers appeared to have an easy time keeping the kids quiet, but I am sure a lot of work went into it. I couldn’t help comparing them to our MLAs in the Legislature. I went over to Victoria last year and visited the Legislature during one of the few months the government was in session. I had a great seat over the Liberal benches and noted seven MLAs with their cellphones under the desk, texting away or playing games and paying no attention to what was happening. Then all the desk-thumping and cat-calling like a bunch of unruly teenagers. I could not see what the opposition MLAs were doing other than sitting and taking it. It saddens me to think we pay all these people high wages and great benefits to go to the Legislature when they show this type of behaviour, then they complain about teachers demands for better conditions to teach in the classroom. The children are our future and deserve the best education we can give them, along with the best conditions that we can give them in which to learn. Stan Hutchison Maple Ridge

Other side of private schools Editor, The News: Re: Private system taking from public stream (Letters, June 18). It is understandable that those not familiar with private schools may have misconceptions about them, including the funding. It is also true that there are elite schools, but they are the exception, not the rule. However, letters such as Nina Fowell’s and others indicate that there is clearly a need for addressing the other side of this issue. Perhaps our own experience, together with that of many of our friends and relatives may be helpful for this. Shortly after we immigrated to Canada in 1954, the pastor of our church suggested that we should establish a Christian school, which we wholeheartedly endorsed, even though most of us were relatively poor immigrants. Because of that, we had to make many and severe sacrifices, including constant fundraising events and a lot of free labour, since there was no gov-

ernment funding of any kind. In 1956-57, we were able to build our first (modest) building, which doubled as our place of worship on Sundays. When the provincial school tax was introduced, we all paid our full share, like anyone else, and still do to this very day. Why did we sacrifice like that? It was and still is out of principle. Even while we adhered to the provincial curriculum, we knew that our children should be taught in a Christian environment and by Christian teachers. It was not until 1977 that the government began partially funding some of our costs, but only for the education part. These government funds are calculated on a per student basis, only when taught the curriculum as laid out in the provincial education ministry’s guidelines. By now you must have realized that land, buildings, maintenance and all other related costs are still fully paid

for by the parents and their supporters. In addition, in our church and many others, we still have regular collections for an education fund to help those who are unable to pay their share of the costs, including those with special needs. The current dispute between the BCFT and the government is a separate issue, which I shall not comment on, except to offer my personal opinion that ESL classes ought not to be taught in elementary grades. I base that on my own experience. When we came to Canada, early in May, 1954, my youngest brother did not go to school until September of that year. By that time, he could speak English better than any of us who had studied English in Holland, most of us right through high school. He learned that simply through playing with the few kids that were in our neighbourhood. Walter Verwoerd Maple Ridge

A former Pitt Meadows alderman has resurrected an association to advocate for taxpayers and tenants in the city. Ken Joyner believes it’s time the city had an organization to ensure residents are getting the “maximum return” for every tax dollar they pay. “I think it’s time for people to get involved,” said Joyner, who served on municipal council from around 1970 to 1982. Pitt Meadows used to have a “ratepayers and tenants association,” which had a membership as high as 166 members. But that dwindled to 13 by the time it disbanded in 1986. Joyner and his wife Thelma were on the executive and he remembers the group has clout at city hall. They lobbied for a rural mailing route, a stop light at Harris

Ken Joyner reads through archives from the former taxpayers’ association. Road and Lougheed Highway, kept taxpayers informed about sewer hookups, diking and drainage. The association’s minutes list moving a phone booth from inside old municipal hall to the front of the post office as another accomplishment. The group also lobbied against the expansion of a runway at the airport. “We got two petitions,” said Joyner. “The people here that’s who put a stop to it.” Joyner says another

association is needed to keep rising taxes, salaries and unnecessary projects in check. He believes there’s an appetite for such an association, given the response to two petitions in the past two years, each calling for no residential tax increase. More than a 1,000 people signed the petition each time, prompting city hall to prepare two budget scenarios last year – one with no tax increase and a second with an increase of 1.9 per cent.

“It helps to speak with one voice,” said Joyner, who stressed he won’t be seeking a seat on Pitt Meadows council. Politicians won’t be able to sign up as members of the association. Joyner has already registered the association and is in the process of recruiting members.

‘Hardship consideration asked for Kanaka school’

the

Grades from front

Serra has asked the BCTF to consider the additional hardship to Kanaka teachers, who could lose up to six weeks of pay – a month more than their colleagues, if the strike continues through summer. “We do need to be very sensitive to asking those teachers to take more of a hit than other teachers,” said Serra. Students are also awaiting the union’s decision about whether pickets will come down to allow them to attend summer school. Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the government will lift the lockout for summer school if teachers agree to lift their strike. “All of the sudden, Mr. Fassbender was asking us for what sounded like a favor,” said Serra, adding that the minister could ensure summer school went ahead by putting more money on the table to resolve class size and composition issues. Students have had their final exams simplified, to allow for easier marking. The Grade 10 English exam had one of its two essay questions removed, and both long-answer questions were removed from the Grade 11 social studies final. They were replaced by more multiple choice questions, which are faster for markers. On Thursday, The B.C. School Trustees Association urged both sides to get back to the negotiating table. Trustee Ken Clarkson, the local representative to the BCSTA, is glad trustees are getting involved. “It’s good they’re saying something. In my opinion, trustees don’t have a big enough voice in what’s taking place.” Clarkson also said the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) should be under the direction of school boards and trustees, who once set tax rates and negotiated with unions locally. As it is, the BCPSEA “takes its orders from government,” and boards have had their power eroded.

UV zaps drinking water $100m disinfection plant opens at Coquitlam reservoir by J eff Nagel Black Press

Drinking water from Metro Vancouver’s Coquitlam reservoir is now being disinfected using ultraviolet light. The $100-million project opened last week, but residents are unlikely to taste any difference. “You will not notice a thing,” Metro Vancouver utilities committee chair Darrell Mussatto said. “It doesn’t change the taste, the colour – anything at all.” The Coquitlam reservoir typically serves the eastern third of the region – Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and parts of Surrey and Langley. Previously, a combination of ozonation and chlorination was used for the Coquitlam reservoir water.

It will now pass under eight banks of ultraviolet lights that zap chlorineresistant organisms like cryptosporidium and giardia that can make people sick. Some chlorine will still be added at the end of the process to prevent pathogens from re-growing further along in the Metro water main system, but less will be used than in the past. The disinfection upgrade was made to comply with revised federal drinking water standards that required a higher level of treatment. “This will greatly exceed the regulations,” Mussatto said, but added Metro had no option. He said the old system was “perfectly safe,” but new standards extended to Metro’s protected reservoirs even though they were mainly geared to protect more vulnerable well water systems from a repeat of the deadly drinking water contamination tragedy of 2000 in Walkerton, Ontario.

The region previously opened a much more costly filtration plant to treat water from the Seymour and Capilano reservoirs. Two years ago, Metro reps worried that a further rule change might be ordered by Ottawa forcing a filtration system at Coquitlam as well, but Mussatto is no longer concerned that will happen. “The Coquitlam is a much bigger watershed and they get much less sediment in their water,” he said. “There’s no need for filtration there and we don’t anticipate any in the future.” The reservoir’s main challenge will eventually be serving the demand of the growing region. The dam may need to be raised eventually, but Mussatto said that may be up to 50 years away. The UV project came in somewhat under the original $110 million budget. Metro Vancouver provides a billion litres of water each day to about half of B.C.’s population.

Don’t pick up fledglings, let them fly by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

If you find a baby bird tossed out of its nest, don’t scoop it up and take it to a vet or the SPCA. March to July is nesting season for birds and the B.C. SPCA is once again seeing a spike in unnecessarily rescued are fledglings, so are local vets. Since spring arrived, the Dewdney Animal Hospital has cared for 10 fledglings, one baby raccoon, four starlings which were attacked by cats, a stellar jay caught in bird netting and three baby ducks, one who was abandoned and two whose mother

was run over by a car. “As per every year, we are receiving tons of baby birds that are learning to fly,” said Dr. Adrian Walton who owns Dewdney Animal Hospital. “They spend three to four days on the ground with momma watching so it is really important not to pick them up .. but rather keep your cat inside and let them learn to fly.” Since the majority of bird species nest on the ground, dogs running off-leash can have a huge impact on waterfowl and shorebirds. The SPCA only recommends intervening if you can tell if the bird is a nestling. A nestling is a feath-

erless, downy, or incompletely feathered bird. If you find one, look up and see if you can find the nest - it may be in a nearby tree, shrub, or on the outside of a building. If the nest has fallen to the ground or been blown down, try to get the young and the nest back in the original position, securing

it in place if necessary. If you cannot find or reach the nest, contact your local wildlife rehabilitation centre Fledglings are older, nearly fully feathered birds that are learning to fly and live out of the nest. They are often clumsy and may appear to be hurt when in fact they are just developing their flying skills.

Solving a problem like Maria Theatre in The Country stages The Sound of Music until July 4 by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

F

or Katie Collins, playing Maria von Trapp is a balancing act. She is “a flibbertijibbet. A will-o’-the wisp. A clown.” She is also a doting mother and woman of deep faith. She’s an unforgettable character from a movie and a real person with a life more complex than a script. “The real struggle for me is doing it differently,” Collins says as she contemplates adding just the right amount of Julie Andrews to her Maria von Trapp for Theatre in The Country’s production of The Sound of Music. The musical features 26 performers, sixpart harmonies, video projections of the snow-peaked Alps and some truly amazing voices. With her pixie haircut, Collins already bears an uncanny resemblance to Andrews. She quips she’s also a music teacher and has worked as a nanny in the past. “I wanted to play Maria and not play Julie Andrews,” says Collins, who read an autobiography about the matriarch of the von Trapp family to prepare. “I wanted to bring in a little more of her character and the real story that shaped the character.” A classically trained singer from Vancouver, Maria is a role Collins has coveted for years. She even auditioned for a Seattlebased production a few years ago. Born in 1905, the real Maria was an orphan by her seventh birthday. She entered the Benedictine Abbey of Nonnberg in Salzburg as a novice but took a position as teacher with the von Trapp family when her health suffered.

Katie Collins plays Maria in Theatre in the Country’s production of The Sound of Music. She was supposed to remain with the von Trapps for 10 months, at the end of which she would formally enter the convent. During this time however, Georg von Trapp fell in love with Maria and asked her to become a second mother to his ten children. When the family lost most of their wealth during the 1930s, Maria turned their hobby of singing into a profession. The von Trapps fled when the Nazis annexed Austria in 1938, ended up performing around the U.S. and eventually settled in Vermont. Their story eventually inspired the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The Sound of Music, and subsequent 1965 hit film. “Rogers and Hammerstein embellished the

story a bit to make it more romantic,” says Collins, who has still kept Julie Andrews’ spunk and feistiness in her character. What Collins learned from the autobiography was the real Maria wanted to be faithful to God. “She never imagined falling in love and getting married,” Collins explains. “It’s really a revelation for her when Mother Abbess suggests that she can fall in love and get married and love God completely. That tension is probably the most interesting for me in her character.” In Act Two of The Sound of Music, Collins says you can see Maria grow up. “She takes her spunk and tomboyishness and helps the captain lead his family to safety. And maybe that’s what she was called

Maple Ridge student vying for Miss B.C. title Miranda Tymoschuk will compete in Langley on June 30 Maple Ridge is counting on Miranda Tymoschuk to capture the Miss Teen B.C. crown next week. Tymoschuk is this region’s sole representative out of 50 hopefuls in the 2014 Miss B.C., Miss Teen B.C. and Mrs. B.C. pageant. Maple Ridge last captured the Miss Teen B.C. crown in 2006, when Alex Keizer won. Unlike other pageants, there is not a long list of rules that make many women ineligible. For example, there is not a maximum age

limit to participate, nor are there height and weight requirements. Among the contestants are women, who are single parents. This year’s roster of contestants includes a young lady who is a former competitor in the Special Olympics, as well as a contestant with autism. Tymoschuk ““This is not a beauty pageant. It will be a well-rounded, intelligent, outgoing and well-spoken young lady who

will win the crown, not necessarily the most beautiful girl,” says pageant creator and producer Darren Storsley. Leading up to the final pageant, all contestants receive professional training in areas such as public speaking, interview skills, media relations, modelling, manners, etiquette, leadership, self-esteem, health, fitness, nutrition, assertiveness and motivational speaking, and even self-defense. A student of Thomas Haney secondary, Tymoschuk is an avid volunteer whose most recent project is the Make B.C. Smile campaign. The campaign strives to bring people together with random acts of kindness and

“positive interventions.” You’ve probably seen students in Maple Ridge this year with signs that say, “Honk if you love someone”. Tymoschuk has also raised money for Royal Columbian Hospital and has volunteered in Africa with Free The Children and Me to We.

Vote for Miranda Vote for your favourite contestant for the People’s Choice award at www.missbc.ca. The pageant takes place Monday, June 30 at 7 p.m. at the Chief Sepass Theatre in Langley.

AS SEEN ON ARKETPLA CE C’S M Thanks Bruce I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. Burrards drop to .500 Lose in overtime Friday, then to WLA’s top team on Sunday by Neil Corbet t Black Press

The Maple Ridge Burrards lost two weekend games, slipping to .500 on the season. Sunday at Planet Ice, they gave the league leading Victoria Shamrocks all they could handle before finally surrendering an 8-7 loss. The other defeat came in overtime in Burnaby, by a 10-8 score. Victoria is 8-0-1 on the season.

Getting there is hard, but staying is even harder by Nei l Corbe tt Black Press

Section coordinator: Neil Corbett 604-467-1122 ext. 216

“We’re buying in to a simple offensive and defensive system – they believe in it, they’re playing it, and it’s working for us,” said Victoria assistant coach Dave Lowden. “Our strength comes out of the back end.” He said the game tested their depth, and they went with rookie goaltender Cody Hagedorn for his first start. “We have to have full confidence in him. He has to be confident he can stop the ball, and he came in and he absolutely played fantastic,” said Lowden. He gave props to the Burrards, saying they look like an improved team.

Victor Bartley of the Nashville Predators plays against the Colorado Avalanche in game last season.

ow that he’s made it to the National Hockey League, Victor Bartley can clearly see his next goal – staying there. That second aspect of being a pro in the top hockey league in the world presents a challenge that is equal to the long climb that got him there, says Maple Ridge’s latest NHLer. Bartley was one of the promoters of the alumni charity game that was played Saturday night at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. Even casual hockey fans could see the difference in his NHL-honed game, compared with that of some of his former Rustlers brethren – themselves a group of accomplished players. The crisp, tapeto-tape passes, the slick puckhandling and powerful skating stride would enable anyone to “spot the NHLer.” Bartley said he enjoyed a good rookie campaign with the Nashville Predators. They carried seven

defencemen, and so he managed to get into 50 games. Including 24 games he played the season prior, Bartley has a goal and 13 points in 74 games. “Overall, when I had the opportunity to play, I thought I played well,” he said. “I really managed the third period quite well at times.” In his first season, Bartley had been on a roll in the minors, and came to the big club as a top-four defencemen. He was thrown in the deep end, and relished the opportunity. “It was great actually, my first 24 games I was averaging top-four ice time on the team. I was averaging over 20 minutes per night. It felt great to play those minutes. As a young defenceman, 26, who wants to establish himself as an everyday NHL blueliner, could there be a better place to learn than in Nashville? See NHLer, p17

Bartley plans to stand out

“There’s really not. We have so many high-calibre NHL defencemen there with Shea Weber, Roman Josi and especially our defensive coach Phil Housley, who is one of the best American players there ever was. “To learn from them on a daily basis has been great. It’s been phenomenal for my learning experience so far.” He said the secret to the Predator’s success with their defencemen, who have included the likes of stars Ryan Suter, Cody Franzen and Dan Hamhuis, is giving the players time to develop. “They just take their time, they don’t rush players into the NHL right away – that doesn’t happen very often. We all paid our dues in the minor leagues, learning from the coaches down there, and learning the system. You know what it takes to get to the NHL.” “And the biggest thing is not even getting there, it’s being able to stay there – that’s definitely the hardest thing.” Playing against the biggest stars in hockey, it might be surprising who he found arguably the toughest guy to defend. “One of the toughest forwards to play against probably I’d say was definitely T.J. Oshie – because he’s a small stature guy and he’s so shifty, but he’s still very, very strong in his core. His centre of gravity is great. Trying to knock him off the puck was almost impossible.” Ask him his goals for next year, and Bartley doesn’t have to think for a second. “I want to be a full-time NHl player, a guy that the Predators can rely on each and every night, and I want to lead our team in hits and blocked shots as well.” He proved he can play some offence, with 39 points in 76 games for the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL in his 20112012 rookie season with them. But points aren’t in his goals. “It’s going to be tough in that our back end has so much skill, and I realize that power play is not really my future in Nashville. To maintain, and be able to stay in the league, I have to do something that’s going to stand out.”

Burrards to host Timbermen

“They’re a very good team, and we’re expecting to see them again. We’re going to see them Friday night, and we’re going to see them in the playoffs,” he said. “They are a
