264 Street on list of top crash sites By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

Two Highway 1 interchanges in Langley cracked ICBC’s top 10 worst crash sites in the Lower Mainland. In fifth spot in the top 10 is the 264 Street on-ramp and 56 Avenue on-ramp, at 264 Street. ICBC recorded 220 crashes there last year. In seventh spot is the 232 Street interchange, which recorded 190 crashes in 2013. The number one crash site in Metro Vancouver was the Willingdon exit and turning lane off Highway 1, with 350 crashes last year. That is almost one crash for every day of the year. According to ICBC, the number of fatal crashes at intersections increased in 2012 from 2011. In 2012, 77 people died in crashes in B.C., compared to 66 in 2011. No information on the number of fatal crashes was available for 2013. There has been a marked decline in the number of drunk driving fatal crashes. In the Lower Mainland, there were 40 deaths in 2010 and only 12 in 2012.

Three charged in Bradner robbery Aldergrove Star

Three people have been arrested and charged following a robbery last Thursday at a convenience store in the 5400 block of Bradner Road. Abbotsford Police patrol division officers were called to the site at 7:35 p.m., June 19. Two men had confronted the 66-year-old store manager and stole cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes.

One of the men was brandishing a knife, and the suspects fled from the area in a white sedan. APD officers arrived on scene and began searching for the vehicle and suspects. Eventually, the vehicle was located near 264 Street in Aldergrove. The subsequent investigation and tracking resulted in the arrest of two men

and one woman. James Russell Fraser, 30, and Jesse Kaj Thomsen, 22, have now been charged with robbery, and Leah Renee Dan, 30, has been charged with possession of stolen property. Const. Ian MacDonald said the APD was able to make these quick arrests as a result of “excellent assistance” from witnesses and the Langley RCMP.

With schools behind picket lines for a second week and little hope of a quick settlement, school districts are starting to notify parents that year-end report cards won’t be produced. Surrey school district superintendent Jordan Tinney posted a notice to parents that even shortened report cards that were planned at the beginning of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation strike won’t be possible. “The information that we need to produce report cards is in the hands of teachers and they are on strike,” Tinney wrote. “The support staff we normally have to help us develop and print report cards are also honouring the picket lines and are not at work.” New Westminster superintendent John Gaiptman sent out a similar letter Monday, telling parents not to expect report cards for kindergarten to Grade 8. “Please be assured that, although you will not receive a final report card, your child will be placed in the next grade level for September,” Gaiptman wrote. Speed Bumps and Crosswalk Construction Starts

Summer schools also under threat FROM FRONT:

School districts are running buses this week to get Grade 10-12 students to their provincial exams, which have been designated an essential service by the B.C. Labour Relations Board. Tinney added that summer school plans are looking “very tenuous” in Surrey, and some districts have already canceled their summer instruction. Education Minister Peter Fassbender has said the partial lockout imposed on teachers will be lifted after year-end administrative days so it does not interfere with summer school programs.

This week a Langley Township crew began work on the school crosswalk and speed bumps on 29 Avenue, in front of the Aldergrove Secondary school and Kinsmen Community Centre. The crosswalk and reconfiguration of the school parking lot is a joint project of the Township and Langley School District, in response to community demands for safety enhancements at the busy section of 29 Avenue.

Theft couple had baby in tow Aldergrove Star

Mission Mounties have arrested a couple who were using a baby to help them steal from elderly victims across the Fraser Valley, including in Langley recently. The 47-year-old man and 21-year-old woman, both of Abbotsford, are suspects in a series of distraction thefts targeting elderly victims over the last year, said RCMP. The pair are well known to police. During Seniors Week in Langley ( June 2-8), several seniors were victims of this scam, confirm Langley RCMP. “We’ve had eight distraction thefts here,” said Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks. Locally, the suspects targeted elderly women out grocery shopping. The suspects follow the potential victim home and then approach the victim, carrying their baby and either asking for water for an overheated car or for water to heat a baby bottle, said Langley RCMP. While the victim goes to get the water, the suspects make off with whatever they can grab at the door, usually wallets or purses. Police say the pair preyed on people’s

good nature. On Wednesday, June 11, Mission RCMP received a call from a resident who said his 72-year-old mother had been approached at their home by a man and woman with a baby. The couple stated they needed water for their vehicle which had broken down. However, the elderly resident had read about the scam in the local newspaper. The resident watched the couple closely and did not give them an opportunity to steal any items, said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. The resident called Mission RCMP and said the couple left in a newer model silver Dodge Caravan with no licence plates. “The coverage of this series of thefts by the local media and the alertness of these residents were instrumental in assisting police in apprehending these suspects,” said Wright. About an hour later the Mounties received another call from a 73-year-old Deroche resident that a couple with a baby in a grey van had come to his home and asked for water as their vehicle was overheating. When the resident returned

after retrieving the requested water it was found that his 83-year-old wife’s purse had been stolen. Less than 10 minutes later, Mission police observed a vehicle matching the suspect description provided by the both victims. Police stopped the vehicle and arrested the pair. A one-year-old child was also in the vehicle. The Ministry of Children and Families was contacted regarding care of the child. The driver was identified as Donald Quinnell who is well known to police. The passenger was identified as Krisztina Krakoski who is also known to police. Police recovered several items of stolen property from within the van, including identification stolen from the victim in Deroche. The van was traced back to local auto dealer, said Wright. The suspects had gone to the auto dealer suspected of pretending to be interested in buying the vehicle and using it to commit the thefts. Both were charged with theft under $5,000 and released with several bail conditions.

‘Day to Heel’ for dog lovers Aldergrove Star

Around 200 people and numerous four-legged friends came out to Douglas Park on Sunday for the Day to Heel event, to honour the six dogs who died of heat exhaustion when stuck in the back of a dog walker’s truck on a hot day in May. At the ceremony, it was announced that newly-born B.C. Guide Dogs puppies will carry the names of the six dogs that died. The B.C. Guide Dog association is waiting for one more puppy, a lab/border collie cross, to be born so it can be named Salty. Salty, a border collie that also died that day, was the dog walker’s ex-husband’s canine. It’s believed the dog was their

son’s dog and was in the woman’s care at the time. The accused’s ex-husband was at the ceremony and received a puppy ultrasound of the to-be-born guide puppy, confirmed Kevin Woronchak, owner of Until We Meet Again pet memorials and organizer of Sunday’s ceremony. Alternatives Funeral also put on the event. Woronchak and his wife had pet blankets made with each of the dogs silk screened on them and given to each of the owners. “The families were so touched by the day,” said Woronchak. Last week, B.C. SPCA confirmed that they recommended charges of six counts of animal cruelty to Crown counsel.

Celebrate Canada Day at home Aldergrove Star

Aldergrove sisters Kasey (6, at left) and Kalyn (8) Bunville will be hosting a fundraising car wash for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation on Saturday, July 5 at the Royal Canadian Legion Aldergrove branch 265 parking lot on Fraser Hwy. The car wash volunteers, including father Jason, will be working from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. that day, and all funds collected will go to the cause. The fundraiser is one of the ways the Bunville family helps the hospital each year, in thanks for the hospital’s care for Kasey when she was diagnosed and

treated for cancer at a very young age. Kasey has now been cancer-free for one year and is enjoying a healthy and normal life alongside her sister and their friends. The Aldergrove Bottle Depot also accepts donations for the BC Children’s Hospital in Kasey’s name: donors can simply drop off bottles and cans and tell the depot clerk to credit the total to the BC Children’s Hospital. Many thousands of dollars have been collected for the hospital over the past couple of years by the Bunville family supporters.

Bishop helps St. Dunstan celebrate 10th year Aldergrove Star

Bishop Melissa Skelton, the new Bishop of the Diocese of Westminster, was greeted by a full house when she visited St. Dunstan Anglican Church on Sunday, June 8. It was a special day for the St. Dunstan’s congregation as they celebrated their 10th anniversary in the church on 264 Street. When the old St. Dunstan’s was torched on Halloween 2000, the congregation began the work of designing and building a new church. The first service in the new church was held June 6, 2004. From the beginning, the vision for the new building was to not only create a worship space, but also to provide an asset for the community – a place where people could come together to meet, celebrate, recreate and learn. The sanctuary was designed with great acoustics and flexible seating and the hall, which can hold 250 people, comes equipped with tables, chairs and a commercial kitchen. In the past 10 years that dream of becoming

IRICE: Ingrid Rice’s View

Teacher challenged Editor: So let me try to wrap my brain around this one. The government locks teachers out. This means means they won’t allow teachers do any work at lunch and recess. The government also won’t let teachers physically in the school until 45 minutes before school starts and we are forced to leave school premises only 45 minutes after school ends. They also ruled that teachers are not allowed to do any school work at home. Ok, got that. Then at the same time, the government docks teachers’ pay 10%, defending their actions by saying that teachers are not doing their jobs? What a gong show. I’m so tired of the hypocrisy. Speaking of hypocrisy, here’s a real barn burner for you. Did you know that the same PRIVATE school the premier sends her child to also receives funding from, who else? The government! Yep...that’s a two tiered education system, people, both of which the government funds! So, dear public, when you start complaining about having to buy a pack of computer paper from your kid’s school supply list again (which is used to help supplement the “never-big-enough” paper budget in the school...ie: photocopying and computer printing) don’t complain to me! Buy the darn paper! And remember that no matter what you think of teachers, your taxes (which are supposed to support your kid’s public and “free” education) are also supplementing Christy Clark’s son’s private education. The jokes on every BC taxpayer. Too bad it just isn’t funny. Lori Opper, Surrey Teacher and proud of it, Aldergrove

VICTORIA – A few things have changed since the last allout teacher strike in B.C. That was just two years ago, when the B.C. Teachers’ Federation was coming off its second-ever voluntary agreement with a 16% raise over five years and what the union termed an “enhanced” signing bonus of $4,000. Even with special teacher-only top-ups, BCTF members almost rejected the last of the government’s big-spending pre-Olympic labour deals signed in 2006. By 2012, outraged teachers were back on the legislature lawn, howling for another 16%, with backup vocals provided as usual by HEU, CUPE, BCGEU and other public sector unions that settled for less. Teachers had just sailed through a crippling global recession with a series of raises, but were oblivious to all that. Last week the protest venue switched to Vancouver, where both the crowd and the demands looked a bit thinner. The signing bonus target is up to $5,000, but the raise is a mere 8% over five years (compounded, for those who passed math), plus another huge basket of cash disguised as benefit improvements and so forth. Government negotiators put their total compensation demand at 14.5%. One obvious dodge: they want the bottom two steps of the teacher salary

A brief history of teacher demands

grid dropped. That’s simply a raise for entry-level teachers. Admittedly those are rare creatures these days with shrinking enrolment and ironclad seniority rules that allow retired teachers to monopolize substitute work. Something else that’s changed since 2012 is that the government has granted the BCTF’s wish to bargain directly with the province. The education ministry executed a takeover of the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association after last year’s election, and installed veteran industrial union negotiator Peter Cameron. He’s backed up by long-time labour specialist Lee Doney, whose task is to keep the teacher deal within Treasury Board limits that have defined all other public sector union settlements. Doney made it clear last week that no mediator is going to come in and “split the baby” as long as the BCTF position is so far beyond the current compensation framework. Despite constant union complaints of low wages and deteriorating working conditions in B.C. schools, education grads remain lined up around the block hoping to get in. Why is that? For those who have been exposed to life outside school for a while, it’s fairly simple. The job market out here in the real world is tough. And here’s

how the real world evaluates a teaching job. Start with 189 working days, each nine hours long as per the accepted definition, and the top-heavy seniority list that places the average teacher salary at around $72,000 a year. That works out to $42.32 an hour, plus a suite of benefits that most private sector employees can only dream about, starting with three months of prime-time vacation. I am occasionally lectured by teachers that the job goes far beyond five hours in the classroom and an additional four hours a day preparing and marking. They throw out different estimates, variously defined. Alas, it’s a salaried job, and we salaried employees in the real world don’t waste a lot of time counting hours. Here’s the work, here’s the deadline, here’s the pay. Take it or leave it. Consider another union demand that seems to be just another thinly disguised raise. The BCTF wants a large increase in preparation time for elementary school. There are no duties being added here. For this one item, government negotiators calculate the cost to taxpayers at $86.2 million every year by the fifth year of the BCTF proposal. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Twitter: @tomfletcherbc Email: tfletcher@blackpress.ca

A bad example is set Editor: Do the teachers really care about the education of the children of B.C., or just their bottom line each month? What kind of an example is the strike teaching the children? It teaches the children that should they not get their way at their job, stomp your foot, stop working at your job and stand around holding signs. The teachers want a signing bonus. How many taxpayers have ever gotten a signing bonus when we took a new job, much less agreed with our employer to continue working after demanding higher pay? Why do they want to be rewarded for not working? The teachers are the ones who voted to stop working. Usually when someone has been hired to do any type of a job, if he or she doesn’t like the working conditions or the pay, the person leaves and finds a different job. When a person is hired and does not show up to do the work he or she was hired to do, and cannot give a very good explanation for not showing up, that person gets fired. Do you get my point? The teachers whine they are giving up their pay for the kids. They whine they can’t pay their bills. No one forced the teachers to stop working. They voted for themselves to go without pay. A first-year teacher earns a lot more in a year then I do. Maybe not all of the teachers on strike want to be on strike. Maybe there are a few teachers who are grateful to have a teaching job. Maybe there are a few teachers who want to teach without asking for more money. Let’s not kid ourselves. It is wanting more money for themselves and fewer students to teach (i.e. less work) in the classroom that the teachers’ union is fighting for. School districts must stop offering tenure. I am not aware of other companies that offer tenure to their employees. The majority of the teachers live in a theory world, not the real world. Paula Bowman, Aldergrove

Transit reality check Editor: I’m not sure we need a ‘summit’ but Translink needs a ‘reality check’. They have their combined heads stuck so far in the sand they can’t see beyond the Port Mann Bridge as long as they are getting their pay cheques. They have blinkers on when it comes to the areas south of the Fraser. We are part of the ‘Metro’ Vancouver and we deserve the services that the rest of ‘Metro’ Vancouver receives. They keep taking our tax money and we continue to grow, yet they ignore the fact the we do need services, so stop with providing all the services to those living within walking distances to most things that they do and start focusing on those of us who don’t have that luxury. Mayor Froese, believe me, the Minister has done this short notice for a reason. It was intended to not include those of us south of the Fraser, and I would be on him like a hive of bees to revisit this deadline. Debbie Atkinson, Langley

The generation raising kids today is squeezed so thin, in terms of both time and money, that the stresses parents face are impacting their children’s emotional development, according to recentlyreleased research findings. Families of yesteryear were much better off financially than families today and the simpler, slower-paced lifestyle was good for kids, says Langley’s Early Childhood Development Committee (ECD). “There are a lot of middle class children who are considered vulnerable,” said Karen Abrahamson, a University of B.C. Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) community trainer who sits on the ECD committee. “We are seeing a lot of stressed families,” she said. The result is too many kids are arriving in Kindergarten emotionally not ready, according to findings from the Early Development Indicators (EDI) index. The 2013 EDI data was gathered in March. It found that the number of vulnerable children in some parts of Langley was considerably higher than the B.C. average of 33. 1 per cent. The figure is 48 per cent in Aldergrove. The ECD committee presented the findings to the Board of Education at a recent meeting. The information about Langley children is gathered by Kindergarten teachers who volunteer to answer around 100 questions about their students’ cognitive, social, physical well being and behaviour. Conducted every few years in school districts across Canada, the results give some idea of how kids are doing and where their vulnerabilities lie.

This data helps to know where to increase support and services. A then-and-now comparison by HELP shows that 30 years ago the median national income was $65,000. That was when only 54 per cent of women were in the labour force and the average house price (1976) was $192,390. Fast forward to 2010, the median household income (two incomes factored in) and the earnings sat at $68,580 — only $3,500 more than families earned 30 years ago. When the cost of living is factored in, it has skyrocketed for everything, especially housing, which averages at more than $500,000 for a single-family house in Langley. That means an unsustainable future, say UBC HELP researchers. A recent study by the Royal Bank said Metro Vancouver home owners are using up to 80 per cent of their income to pay for housing. The Fraser Institute found that a family in B.C. earning $94,000 pays $40,000 to taxes. It’s becoming a financial strain that is filtering down onto children. There is an explosion of Kindergarten-aged children with anxiety, others with behaviour and aggression issues and some who are unable to share or function socially with their peers. The committee said that parents’ financial stresses, combined with the busyness of two working parents living in an achievement-based society, leads to some kids not being emotionally or socially developed by the time they enter Kindergarten. Both parents work full-time, having to pay for daycare, and cover a large mortgage and debt load.

The pressure spills over to the children, Abrahamson said. An April 28 report indicates that the costs of raising a family in B.C. are rising fast and dangerously. Both parents have to make a minimum of $20 an hour in order to avoid poverty, based on having two kids, one in daycare and one in before/after school care. Childcare costs are the second biggest expense for a family, behind housing. Many social groups are calling for $10/day daycare to help improve the living wage. Families are also busier than ever. Many parents rush home from work and let their toddler or young children play on a tablet or video games while they make dinner. Parents then schedule numerous costly activities because they feel guilty, said Abrahamson. “There is pressures on families to take children to things rather than spend quiet times at home,” she said. Children are coming to Kindergarten show-

ing aggression towards themselves and others. The prevalence of children with anxiety is concerning and mostly a direct result of bubble wrap parenting, said the ECD. “These children aren’t able to cope, they break down with even little changes that happen during the school day,” said Abrahamson. Cora Boecker, of Langley Child Development Centre, said too many parents are focusing on making sure their child can count and do the alphabet by the time they arrive for Kindergarten. “What we really need is for preschool-aged children to know how to play with others. They need social and emotional learning,” said Boecker. That means letting them play, explore, and be creative. This is lacking for children of today, said Boecker, Abrahamson and Bernice Way, children and family program coordinator from Aldergrove

Neighbourhood Services. All of them sit on the Langley ECD. “Parents are scheduling their children’s free time into every class and sport and it turns into very structured play, leaving little room for the imagination of the child,” said Abrahamson. It also means risky play, like climbing a tree or playing in the front yard without supervision, is something many parents of this generation aren’t willing to allow, said research. Helicopter and bubble wrap parenting is creating children who are highly anxious and unable to handle conflict and disappointment because they have been protected from that their whole lives, said the research findings. HELP’s research team, headed by the work of Dr. Paul Kershaw, has created a proposal sent to the federal government called “A New Deal For Families” that is built on a foundation of scientific evidence about the importance of the early years. HELP proposes that maternity leave should be more accessible to both parents and should be extended from one year to 18 months. They are also in favour of $10 a day high quality, accessible child care services for all who need them; flexible working hours offered by employers to allow parents to balance the demands of work and home life. The research done by the UBC team says the family structure as it stands today is in a form of crisis and needs to be remedied. This is the first of a series of stories about the challenges of raising children today. The second in the series will explore how the lack of unsupervised outdoor play has hurt children’s brain development.

DOWNTOWN ABBOTSFORD •

Thousands graduated in the 40th anniversary year at UFV Convocation ceremonies on June 12 and 13. T University of the Fraser Valley celebrated its graduates at three ceremonies at the Abbotsford Centre. More than 2,100 individuals graduated with more than 2,700 credentials this year, over the two days of ceremonies. That meant a lot of handshakes for several UFV officials, including President and Vice Chancellor Mark Evered, Alumni Association Chair Justin P. Goodrich, and Chancellor Brian Minter. Evered noted that UFV awarded nearly double the credentials conferred just six years ago, and alluded to the university’s 40th anniversary, noting that UFV has come a long way since starting out in church basements and storefronts in 1974. RECYCLE & SAVE MONEY!

Aldergrove Star

Mary Sanderson, a well-known and beloved community member, passed away on Sunday in her 103rd year. Mary was tiny but she was lively and always active. She was a mainstay of the Aldergrove OAP Organization and Hall and for years after her retirement as a clerk at Otter Co-op she managed the OAPO’s all-volunteer thrift store which handed out thousands of dollars every year to charities and scholarships locally. Mary was a hardy “old school” farm girl who loved to garden, armed with a “green thumb” that came with her when she came to B.C. from Saskatchewan Mary Sanderson met “Queen Victoria” (portrayed by with her husband, George. Dogwood Nursery was actress Debra Hinksman) at the Langley Douglas Day banquet (file photo from The Star, Nov. 25, 2011). originally started by George Sanderson.

Songwriter debuts new music here Aldergrove’s Patricia Dunphy has grown up with music in her home, and may have inherited some talent from her grandmother Dorthea (Newman) MacDonald, who performed for CN Hotels in the ‘20s and ‘30s. Patricia has lived on the west coast since the mid-’70s and comes from a travel-filled military family. Also known as ‘Tricia’, Patricia Dunphy is a singer songwriter who performs at open mic nights and a few festivals around the lower mainland. The music she plays includes urban folk with some tunes that lean towards blues. The lyrics in many of her compositions are political and thought provoking, involving subjects such as poverty, homelessness, and other

issues. Vipers finish season with win for KidSport Aldergrove Star

For the U18 Aldergrove Vipers their final season together means their teamwork has come to an end but not without giving back to their community. Throughout the course of the year the team players and families fundraised for KidSport and raised $830, the team’s most successful total. It started out back in 2011 as a way to show support to families on the Vipers team who were recently diagnosed with breast cancer. They held a “$1 goal/$1 shutout” fundraiser that quickly raised

A lot has changed in two years. Back then, Gino Paolella found himself in a back brace after he fell through part of the roof on a barn, falling about 15 feet to the ground and fracturing two vertebrae. The injury required three weeks at Langley Memorial Hospital and then three months wearing a brace on his back while he healed. Factor in the physiotherapy, and it was a six-month recovery period. And it was a long lay-off for the always-active Langley teen. “The first thing I thought of was when can I get back,” admitted Paolella, who turns 18 next month. “After about a day and a half of doing nothing, you get pretty sick of it. “It (the accident) makes you think a bit more about what your actions can do. It makes you appreciate what you have and you have to take advantage of the period of time you have to play these sports because it is a fairly short window.” Needless to say, a fully healthy Paolella has made the most of being injury free. Fast forward to now and next week ( June 23), Paolella departs for Glasgow, Scotland as part of a Canadian Rugby League U19 9s team, which will compete at a Commonwealth Games competition.

Gino Paolella Canada will play in a pool with England, Papa New Guinea and South Africa, while the other pool features Australia, Wales, Scotland and Jamaica. In this version of the sport, teams play nine players aside with a few differences than the traditional 15-player a side game. The games are also shorter, which allows for the competition to be completed over a single day or weekend. The Commonwealth competition SEE: Page 21

runs June 27 and 28 and it is being staged as a demonstration sport, with the hopes of gaining full status for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. This is the first time Paolella will play for his country. “It will be something to represent them,” he said. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet, but it will be eyeopening playing.” The Canadian side is made up of 15 Lower Mainland players and will be coached by Andy Blackburn, who has long been involved in the sport at the club, provincial and national level. Blackburn also coaches Paolella with the B.C. Rugby League U20 B.C. Bulldogs and at the club level with the Bayside Sharks, who play out of South Surrey Athletic Park. Blackburn first saw Paolella a few years back at a U16 evaluation camp for a provincial team. “For him to come out of nowhere … on a team that was one of the weakest at the competition, and to standout, that was quite an accomplishment, especially considering some (of the other) kids had been playing rugby for quite a few years,” the coach recalled. “What caught my eye was his strength, his speed and his toughness. “He was a raw talent with all the natural attributes you need to be successful.” Paolella, who is fivefoot-ten and 210 pounds,

only took up the sport the year before in Grade 9 when he joined the D.W. Poppy Redhawks rugby program. His dad and two older brothers had played the sport, but up until then, Paolella had concentrated on soccer, playing at the Metro level with Langley United. In soccer, Paolella used his speed to beat his opponents to the ball. But his style was better suited to rugby. “I played a hard, physical game in soccer and that is kind of why I drifted to rugby,” he explained. And after shifting his focus to the sport, Paolella has blossomed. “With his size and skill in his Grade 10 year, he was one of the more dominant players on the pitch,” said Kyle Barry, one of his high school coaches at Poppy. This past season, the Redhawks captured the Fraser Valley banner for the first time in school history and placed eighth at provincials. Paolella — a team captain — was a big reason for that success. “Gino is pretty much everything you want as a coach,” Barry said. “He is that top player you can depend on to make a play, to win a ruck. “And he is there at practice coming up to us with new drills he want us to do to show the boys. “He lives and breathes the game of rugby.” Paolella also credits

working out with trainer Nate Beveridge of Hybrid Athletics, not only for helping him recover from his injury, but for staying shape. Paolella’s play has also landed him a threemonth tryout with the the Auckland Rugby’s High Performance Academy in New Zealand, which begins in August. Paolella did some research knowing he would likely have to go overseas for a better chance of pursuing his

rugby dreams. He found the program, applied and was accepted. He will be reevaluated following the three-month stint. The fact Paolella put so much effort into finding something to better his game illustrates his level of commitment, Blackburn said. “He is willing to go to greater lengths to improve his game,” the coach said. “This is what may help him get to the next level and differentiate himself from the competition.”

The instrument panel is easier to read, thanks to a little tweaks by the engineers. Satellite-linked Navigation screen with trilingual voice recognition, 3D map and FM traffic is also available that uses GPS technology and a 60GB hard drive based operating system that provides the driver with turn-by-turn voice guidance to their chosen destination. The screen also is used for the back-up camera that offers three different views, normal view, wide angle, and top down. Both side sliding doors open automatically via the key fob or a switch on the dash. A 270-watt AM/FM/ CD audio system with MP3/ Windows Media audio playback and seven speakers including a subwoofer is standard, with a 650-watt and 12-speaker version also available. The 2014 Honda Odyssey is ready to take you on your next big messy adventure with the kids and it can help you clean up too. The van features the world’s first in-car vacuum system called the HondaVac. It comes complete with a replaceable filter, canister bag, nozzle accessories, and a hose capable of reaching the front seats. I feel a family email coming on. My sister-in-law Cristina has an Odyssey van and has been transporting a full size shop vac and leaf blower around for years. My two nieces make quite a mess, unlike my tidy offspring. Just kidding. But before we get into an interior clean-up, let’s cast an eye over the vehicle’s exterior looks. It has a stylish hood that sweeps down towards the grille. The headlights are angled up and back giving the profile a sculpted look. Honda refers to the overall design as a lightning bolt. Not only does it provide an exclusive appearance, but also adds increased visibility for third row passengers. Very nice interior, everything laid out nicely. So many bells and whistles you almost would want to run through a checklist before driving. Eight-passenger seating with a total passenger volume of 4,887 litres, whatever, that means. And all those passengers get thirsty so Honda put in 15 cup holders. The third row is a one-motion 60/40 split ‘Magic’ seat that can accommodate three passengers and still leave 1,087 litres of cargo volume – that’s room for a lot of slushies for later in the journey. The second row is a 3 mode seating with fold down center console. Driver and front passenger seats are captain’s chairs that are
