Police have released an image of a man they say is responsible for theft from mailboxes in Walnut Grove.
Police release photo of mail theft suspect MO N I Q U E TA M M I N G A Ti me s Re po r t e r
Want to know what a mail thief looks like in Langley? Police have released surveillance footage of a young Caucasian man in a baseball cap breaking into the community mailboxes at the Thunderbird Village apartments on June 14. The suspect pictured is accused of prying the mailbox open and stealing mail belonging to numerous people. The suspect is further described as wearing blue jeans, black shoes with white soles, a black hat, and a distinctive blue hoody with a white logo on the heart area and right sleeve. Residents in the Walnut Grove area, Clayton neighbourhood and other spots have reported their mailboxes being broken into numerous times lately. In one Walnut Grove neighbourhood, the thieves actually stole the people’s identity, creating credit cards in the person’s name and spending upwards of $10,000. If you know anything about this suspect call Langley RCMP or Crimestoppers.

Aldergrove’s Davey Butorac, who won an appeal last year to have two murder convictions overturned and new trials ordered, will be back in front of a jury in his new trial for the killings of two sex trade workers. It will be held in B.C. Supreme Court in March, 2015. Twenty days have been set aside for the trial or trials. In October, 2013, Butorac was granted new trials, after winning an appeal of his convictions in the killings of two prostitutes. The 35-year-old Aldergrove man had been found guilty in a jury trial in 2010 of murdering Gwendolyn Lawton, 46, of Abbotsford in March, 2007 and Sheryl Koroll, 50, of Langley on July 7, 2007. Lawton’s body was found on March 13, 2007 in a rural area of Abbotsford, while Koroll’s body was found dumped at a concrete plant in Langley City on July 7, 2007. The convictions were set aside by the B.C. Court of Appeal on the basis that the trial judge erred in accepting “the evidence of each murder as similar fact evidence with respect to the other.” Butorac’s lawyer had argued before the initial trial that evidence relating to the two murder counts should be separated. The judge disagreed. DNA of the victims found in Butorac’s car and on his shoe led to his original conviction. A motive was never made known. Butorac was sentenced to 23 years in prison for the murders. Details about how the trial will go ahead, and whether they will held separately but at the same time, aren’t known at this time. But jury selection is planned for March 5, 2015 and the trial or trials are set for 20 days, starting March 23 of next year. At some point, he will also go to trial for the second-degree murder of Aldergrove’s Margaret Redford, whose body was found floating in Bertrand Creek in Aldergrove on May 20, 2006. Jury selection for that trial had been planned for February, 2013, but was postponed until November and still has not taken place No trial date has been set.

briefs New Timms design unveiled City of Langley residents are invited to stop in for coffee at City Hall today (Thursday, June 26) at 2 p.m. for the official unveiling of the new Timms Community Centre design. “I encourage residents to come and have a look at the many new innovative, convenient and exciting offerings that will be part of this important new community facility,” said City acting mayor Ted Schaffer. “It is a truly integrated facility that combines three primary users — Langley City Hall, Fraser Valley Regional Library and Timms Community Centre — into a single active and inviting civic centre.” In addition to an opportunity to view the concept renderings and learn about the building’s many unique design features, visitors will have a chance to interact with the
design and construction team, following a short presentation by Schaffer, Kim Hilton, director of Recreation, Culture and Community Services, and architect Stuart Rothnie. “This facility will serve as a community and cultural hub where residents can come together to access group activities, health and fitness opportunities, public information and community resources,” added Schaffer. “By supporting positive health outcomes through active living, we envision this facility as the civic heart of our community — a ‘go-to’ place to meet, engage, connect, learn, celebrate and be active together.” The completion date for the project is slated for Dec. 15. The official ground-breaking date for the $14.3 million project will be announced by mid-July.

Cassandra Cavalli sings the national anthem at many Langley sporting events, and will be doing so for the crowd at Langley Canada Day events on Tuesday, July 1 at Willoughby Community Park.

“When you’re singing O Canada, if your heart isn’t glowing, you’re doing it wrong — especially by the time you get to that line.” Cassandra Cavalli should know. The 28-year-old singer-actress has been belting out the national anthem at sporting events in Langley for the past year. If you’ve been in the stands at a Langley Rivermen hockey game or a Thunder lacrosse game in the past 12 months, you’ve likely heard her perform. And on Tuesday, July 1, she’ll get the chance to do it again in front of thou-
sands at the annual Canada Day celebration at Willoughby Community Park, as the winner of The Times’ Sing Your Heart Out competition. Although she received $300 in gift certificates from local businesses as part of her prize, it was the opportunity to sing for the crowd on Canada Day that prompted her to enter. Cavalli, who was born and raised in Langley, has been singing since she was about four years old. She’s never had a lesson, she said. Instead, her instruction came from beautiful fictional characters with golden voices. Continued Page 10
Police are looking into more than 25 vehicles keyed overnight in Langley City on June 4 and 5. Sometime overnight from June 4 to 5, an unknown person or persons used keys to damage vehicles parked in underground parking lots, open parking lots and parallel parked on the street in Langley City. The cars were in the 5200 block of 204 Street,
5300 block of 201A St. and along 54 Avenue in the same area. Police believe the damage was done sometime after 9 p.m. and before 11 a.m. on June 5. If you have any information that would assist police with this investigation, call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200. Should you need to remain anonymous, please call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Last-minute changes to exams MONIQUE TAMMINGA Tim es Reporter
Concerns over who can mark provincial exams has caused a last-minute change to the tests, as students are given no choice but to adapt. On the Langley School District website, a note to students has been posted that the Ministry of Education has made changes to the English 10 and Social Studies 11 exam. In English 10, students will complete the multiple choice question section and one written response question to a passage that they have read. However, students will not be required to complete a longer written essay. In Social Studies 11, students will complete the multiple choice question section only, and won’t be required to complete the essays.
Morning bus pick up times will remain the same as previously scheduled. Return runs may be earlier than previously scheduled. Summer school is also in limbo as the BCTF has indicated it will not have teachers teaching. Report cards for elementary school kids won’t happen either. And a condensed version of marks will be mailed to high school students. Meanwhile, the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils are pushing for bargaining reform. “Parents want an end to the continual turmoil that disrupts our children’s education and a settlement to the current dispute. This broken confrontational bargaining system has hurt children and families for too long and it must be fixed,” said BCPAC president Nicole Makohoniuk.

Blood donors honour lost son
Matthew Skura’s mom Cheryl Vinall was happy with the huge response to an all-day blood donor clinic held at Blacklock Elementary School on Sunday. The clinic was put together in memory of her son who was killed five years ago. Even in death Matt is giving the gift of life, through all the people who came out to donate blood that day, she said. Skura’s
parents said they hope to make the blood donor clinic an annual event. It was May 28, 2009 when Skura, 21, was hanging out with his friends. They’d been drinking and had a run-in with a group of teens who were also inebriated. Words were exchanged and then punches. One of the teens charged at

Once there, another teen delivered what would prove to be a fatal kick to Skura’s head. He died in hospital on May 29. In late 2010, two teens were found guilty of manslaughter in connection with his death.

Residents want to know why funding denied N O AN SWERS ON DENIAL GIVEN BY NATIONAL ENERGY BOARD Residents of the Fort Langley floodplain area near the Salmon River have filed a request for a judicial review, asking why they have been unable to obtain participant funding to take part in hearings on the Kinder Morgan pipeline twinning application, now before the National Energy Board. While Kinder Morgan recently announced it would prefer to build the new pipeline on the hillside above the Salmon River floodplain, and through the Redwoods Golf Course, it has not removed the Salmon River floodplain area from its route maps. Those maps show the bitumen pipeline being routed through privately-owned land in the floodplain area. Residents from the affected areas sought support from the NEB by applying for the participant funding program, but were denied without an explanation. Residents are filing for judicial review to obtain answers as to why their com-
munity, health and environmental concerns are not worthy of support. The NEB’s responsibility is to promote safety and security, environmental protection and efficient energy infrastructure and markets in the Canadian public interest. The participant funding program was created to provide financial assistance to those affected by the proposed pipeline. The funding is meant to partially cover costs associated with independent studies, legal fees, travel and other expenses incurred from participating in the hearing concerning Kinder Morgan’s pipeline twinning project. “Kinder Morgan failed to provide us with critical details on routing options, environmental impacts and economic costs that would enable us to make informed, unbiased decisions about the pipeline. Hearing Order OH-1-2014 only provides us with two opportunities to ask questions about the pipeline so we wanted to be wellversed with these details. Knowing that the NEB
carries out its mandate in the public interest, we applied for the participant funding program so that our community can commission independent studies on how the pipeline will impact our lives,” said resident Byron Smith. Despite residents following the correct steps and procedures for the application, the NEB denied them funding. When Smith travelled to Calgary to request an explanation from the NEB representative in Calgary who was overseeing the application, he was stonewalled. “We are feeling frustrated and neglected as we seek answers within these rigid timelines, without any assistance. It is devastating. I hope that my fellow British Columbians who are feeling the same kind of pressure and lack of support will voice their concerns to local and federal governments so that, together, we can work towards making the best decision for our families, health and environment that goes beyond the pipeline’s alleged economic benefits,” he said.

Starting to shape up
we

Slowly and surely, the 2014 municipal election is starting to take shape. A few newcomers have announced their intentions to run in both Langley City and Langley Township, and now Township Mayor Jack Froese has confirmed he plans to seek a second term. He is the first incumbent to make a public statement, and his timing is appropriate. The summer months are almost here, and now any would-be challengers know they will be running against the incumbent. Unlike in 2011, there has been little obvious interest in toppling the incumbent mayor. Froese announced in the spring of 2011 that he was running for mayor against incumbent Rick Green. Later on, incumbent councillor Mel Kositsky also entered the race, making it a three-way fight. Despite the three-way race and the unrest that had plagued council for several years, voter turnout was only marginally better in the Township in 2011. While the mayor was defeated, all incumbent councillors were re-elected, despite some obvious unhappiness with some of them. That is the great challenge that any newcomer faces. It is very difficult to defeat an incumbent, particularly in the race for councillor or school trustee. Ballots where a multitude of candidates can be chosen tend to work very well for those with better-known names, and those are almost always incumbents. In the Township, it is expected that all eight incumbent councillors will run again. That will make the job of challenger a very tough one. In Langley City, there is a good chance there will be at least two openings, although that has not yet been confirmed. Acting mayor Ted Scaffer is expected to run for mayor and one councillor isn’t likely to run again. If so, newcomers can be sure of taking at least two seats. As for the Langley Board of Education, no candidates have yet come forward. Considering the dismal state of education right now, with an ongoing teachers’ strike and no funding for new schools, perhaps that isn’t too surprising.

Answer online at www.langleytimes.com

We have enough water to quench our thirst, and plenty more, too, but we should still savour every sip. The City of Nanaimo is reaffirming a commitment with its 2014 Water Conservation Strategy, adopted this month. The municipality will expand its toilet rebate program, provide enhanced water billing information and promote grey-water irrigation. It’s worth noting that Nanaimo is already doing relatively well with saving water. According to the city, residents met a target set in 2008 to reduce usage by 15 per cent. Nanaimoites now use 251 litres per person per day, better than both the national average of 274 litres and the B.C. average of 353 litres. But if 251 litres per person still sounds like a lot, well, that’s because it is, and we’re right to wonder if it’s sustainable. A global leader in water conservation is the Netherlands, where residents use half what we use. Their methods aren’t a secret: industry there is devoted to recapture technology, but homeowners have mostly just installed low-flow toilets and shower heads. In Canada, half our water is used in the bathroom, so plumbing renovations do make a difference. And kudos to those who take the trouble to capture rainwater or grey water for their lawns and gardens. Those things help, but saving water has to be simple. Since it’s still viewed as something that’s free, sometimes it’s hard to see any incentive to turn off the tap. So go ahead and save water the easy way. Take a shorter shower. Fill your dishwasher all the way. If you water your lawn, do so at a time of day that minimizes evaporation. The Regional District of Nanaimo has brainstormed dozens of ideas; search for its Team WaterSmart website for tips. Many of us in Nanaimo don’t need these reminders — we’re already making a worthy effort to be water-wise. But we can be stingier still. Let’s continue to be leaders in conservation. Let’s turn off the taps, limit our litres and respect our resources. — Nanaimo News Bulletin

Response to student Editor: This is an open letter to Grade 11 student Brandon Southern, whose letter was published in The Times on June 17. I read your open letter to Mr. Jim Iker. And because you chose to send it to a newspaper instead of Mr. Iker himself, I feel that you are beckoning a reply from the public. Although I don’t claim to represent the public, I thought it would only be fair for you to hear yet another point of view. You said that you are in Grade 11, so perhaps this, in part, explains your shortsightedness regarding the teachers’ strike. You wrote “The ones affected most by this are the students.” In fact, you are not most affected by this. The teachers have willingly chosen to go on full strike in order to create a better education system for the long term. Yes, this means the education system that will be here to educate your children and grandchildren (that is, if it isn’t privatized first). A strike means they forego the entirety of their pay, and stand on the street instead. I find it odd that you state, “It doesn’t matter…. who is right or wrong.” I sincerely hope that you do not apply this line of thinking to other areas of your life. Could you imagine a world in which it did not matter who is right or wrong? It does matter. In what civilized society is the government allowed to overturn legislation and do as they please? We are supposed to live in a democracy. By stripping teachers of their contracts, the government has saved millions of dollars over the last 12 years, an entire generation of students. As of now, it has no intention of putting any of that money back into the education system. I think that alone makes it quite clear the government does not care about you. They undervalue you, not only in monetary terms, but also in how they treat the people responsible for your education. They underpay teachers and show complete disregard for the number and nature of the students in any classroom. Sure, you are right, you do matter. However, students are not the only ones who matter. In determining the health of the education system, it would be impossible — and selfish — to solely consider the wellbeing of the students. Those who teach you need to be paid and treated appropriately. Although you are quick to criticize teachers for how their greedy and selfish behaviour is affecting the quality of your education, you fail to mention an outstanding fact that is responsible for grossly undermining your education. It illustrates how little our government values you. You, and every other student attending public schools across British Columbia, receive $1,000 less than other students from other provinces. I would suggest you address a letter to Premier Christy Clark. If you don’t do it for yourself, consider doing it for your future children who may find themselves in a low quality and inefficient school system, as teachers spend an increasing amount of time struggling to teach the basic curriculum while managing a greater number of social and behavioural problems. ALEXIA ANASTASIOU, LANGLEY
The silence of trustees baffles WHERE ARE THEY WHEN SCHOOL SYSTEM NEEDS THEM? Editor: As a Langley teacher, I have to admit that I am completely baffled by the deafening silence from our Langley school trustees. I thought they cared about education in Langley. I’ve met a few of them, and they say all the right things when at a workshop or a meeting, but where are they when their school system needs defending? Can our district afford to lose summer school revenues? Can we afford fewer international students as parents call their children home, never to return?
Trustees can put some pressure on the government and on BCPSEA. If nothing else, let the Langley voters hear them come out against the teachers, if they think we are wrong. Then they can let the voters decide in November. I don’t like their chances for re-election, if they keep silent. PAUL MILETTE, LANGLEY
Composition number one issue Editor: I have a couple of thoughts on Nicola Gorseth’s well-written piece “Class composition does matter,” (The Times, June 19). First, I find it a bit disturbing that a seven-year-old is wondering why the premier hates teachers. It sounds like she’s only hearing a very biased part of the story from her teacher mother. My other thought is this. I think if you were to poll those
of us classed as non-teachers and taxpayers, we would be in agreement that class composition is the number one problem in our schools and needs to be addressed. I just don’t understand how striking for more wages and increased benefits is going to solve the problem. This is not about the kids. Stop pretending that is. JOHN ATCHISON, LANGLEY
Langley Meadows staff says thanks Editor: Please consider publishing the following message of gratitude to our community. The staff of Langley Meadows Community School would like to thank our community for their thoughtful and generous support. We understand that the steady
flow of treats, coffee, and numerous honks and waves are your way of saying that you support us and public education. LESLIE SHEDDEN, LANGLEY
Work ethic makes a big difference Editor: I was left somewhat bewildered by the outcry in the spring over temporary foreign workers (TFWs) attaining McDonald’s jobs, while Canadians are actively yet futilely seeking employment, including minimum wage jobs. Exacerbating the public outcry was the added news that a number of TFWs were even starting at a higher wage than their Canadian McDonald’s co-workers. This news, specially the latter portion, didn’t make sense to me — for only about a minute. It then dawned upon me that the TFWs were very likely getting the jobs as well as a higher starting wage simply because their greater productivity merits it, and maybe even then some. I cannot imagine any other reason why the McDonald’s head honchos would risk such a political hot potato exploding in their faces, unless some of the TFWs bring their potent Asian work ethic with them. Furthermore, from my own observations during the last couple of decades of the notably strong work ethic practised by new Canadian immigrants — quite noticeable in fruit, vegetable and berry harvesting sector work
that virtually all second, third or fourth-generation Canadians won’t themselves tolerate — I can see how they could be 50 to 100 per cent more productive than their born-and-reared-here Canadian counterparts. I also believe that such strong work ethics and higher-than-average productivity will unfortunately gradually dissipate, as these motivated hard labourers procreate and their descendant generations become accustomed to the slack western world way of life. In fact, one can already witness this effect in immigrants’ children getting caught up in much of our liberal culture — e.g. attire, lingo, nightlife, etc. As it currently stands, it appears that such hard workers aren’t really welcomed here, in a collective sense, no matter how tough and undesirable are the jobs for which they break their backs. I hear thinly-veiled complaints about their presence here in the first place, and more ridiculously hear even more complaints about the back-breaking work they do in place of Canadians who refuse to make such toilsome efforts. “I am very thankful to those who supported me in the contest,” she said. “I hope everyone will have glowing hearts.” For the first time this year, the Canada Day committee has joined forces with International Day celebrations and Tourism Langley for a four-day party at Willoughby Community Park. The first two days, June 28 and 29 will be dedicated to fun sporting competition in a range of activities, from bocce to lacrosse and soccer, presented by Tourism Langley. Canada Day/International Festivities begin in earnest on Monday, June 30 at 3 p.m. with entertainment on the mainstage that runs until 10:30 p.m. The next day, celebration picks up at 11 a.m. and continues until 10:45 p.m. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. Fort Langley, the birthplace of
B.C., will also once again host a Canada Day celebration on July 1. The event goes all day, at venues all over the village. Entertainment will include a presentation of Bard in the Valley’s summer 2014 production of Julius Caesar in front of the historic yellow community hall, as well as pioneer games at the Langley Centennial Museum. The Master of Ceremonies this year at the main stage in the 2014 Fort Langley Canada Day Celebrations will be Professor Douglas Fraser. Fraser is a jazz and blues musician and vocalist who will also be performing the opening and closing set this year in Fort Langley. He is a musicologist, a professor of musical history and historian, and he will be delighting the audience with vintage material on banjo and tenor guitar in a style that has made him a standout performer at festivals all over North America.

“Disney princesses taught me to sing,” laughed Cavalli. In 2012, she placed third in the Langley Has Talent competition, performing the Eagles hit, Desperado. Stepping onto the stage at Christian Life Assembly two years ago brought her out of her shell, she said. “I was too shy. I wanted to get back into acting, but I had gotten used to not taking risks. “I wanted to face that fear — and singing was my greatest fear.” Though she has no aspirations to become a professional singer or a recording artist, Cavalli enjoys performing at sporting events and would love to one day sing the national anthem at Canucks or Lions games. On July 1, she will be on the main stage at Willoughby Community Park sometime between 4:30 and 5 p.m.
proposal, mostly residents who bought homes in the first three phases of the Milner Estates development by Vesta. They said the fourth phase would funnel too much traffic through their neighbourhoods, creating congestion and potential safety hazards. Councillor Charlie Fox tried and failed Monday to convince the rest of council to change the road layout of the townhouses to redirect traffic away from the objecting residents. “I think we can make deci-
sions based on public input and I think we got public input here that’s pretty clear,” Fox said. “I’m not prepared to be wishywashy.” The rest of council did not agree, saying the Fox proposal could still be adopted after it has been reviewed. “We’re not saying no to anything,” Councillor Steve Ferguson said. Councillor Grant Ward said, at the very least, the developer should be asked if it can bear the cost of redoing the plan.

Canada. He got the rights to the chain for Western Canada, with an option for the rest of the country. The first Canadian McDonalds opened in Richmond in 1967. He opened 32 stores before selling the franchise back to head office. When the Tidballs moved to Langley, they build an indoor riding arena, and the family rode Quarter horses. Mr. Tidball opened the first Keg and Cleaver restaurant in 1971 in North Vancouver. In 1972, the Tidballs purchased land for the original Thunderbird Equestrian Centre at 88 Avenue and 200 Street, north of Highway 1. It was both a riding centre and contained the Keg in the Country restaurant, a very popular Langley dining spot. The Tidballs were enthusiastic supporters of all types of riding, and Mr. Tidball accompanied his daughter Laura to the Summer Olympics in 1984 in Los Angeles, and 1988 in Seoul, where she competed in equestrian events. In 1992, he and his son Stephen took part in team roping at the Cloverdale Rodeo and finished as top Canadian team ropers. In 1998, the original Thunderbird centre was sold for redevelopment. It was combined with other property in the area to become the Colossus movie theatre and a shopping centre. Thunderbird Show Park at 248 Street and 72 Avenue opened in 2000. As preparations were being made on Saturday for Mr. Tidball’s memorial, his wife, Dianne, also passed away. The couple is survived by four children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends from many walks of life joined with family members on Sunday at Thunderbird Show Park to remember George Tidball. Mr. Tidball, founder of the Keg restaurant chain, original McDonald’s franchisee for Western Canada and builder and co-founder with his wife Dianne of the two Thunderbird facilities in Langley, died on June 3 at the age of 83. The Tidball family are longtime Langley residents, having moved here in 1969. Among those paying tribute to him on Sunday were Township Mayor Jack Froese, fellow restaurateurs Bus Fuller, Neil McLean and David Aisenstat and musicians Ian Tyson and Aaron Pritchett. Also speaking were the Tidballs’ four children — Kathy Robbins, Stephen Tidball, Jane Tidball and Laura Balisky. The memorial event had a distinctly western theme, with many of those attending attired in western garb. Grandson George Tidball Jr. led a riderless horse as a mounted cowboy entourage paid tribute to Mr. Tidball. Mr. Tidball was born in Carstairs, Alberta and graduated from high school in Penticton. He and Dianne were married in 1952. In 1956, he graduated as a chartered accountant and shortly afterwards, went to work for Alcan in Kitimat. He attended an IBM course in New Y ork City that year and returned to create Alcan’s first computerized inventory program. In 1958, he won the gold medal for having the highest score in Canada’s certified management accountant (CMA) program. In 1959, he impressed a visiting Harvard professor who offered him the opportunity to attend Harvard, where he attained an MBA in economics in 1961

Premier living at Polygon’s Kingston House Heritage-style elegance is at top of mind at Polygon’s Kingston House, a collection of two-bedroom apartment residences in a master-planned community that is inspired by an Ivy League legacy. “You can move in this summer,” says sales manager Judy Rohatyn. “With payments from $899 a month, this is a great opportunity for first-time buyers to purchase a home in the South Surrey market.” Kingston House is the first apartment collection at Polygon’s Harvard Gardens, a master-planned community that is also
close to top schools, golf courses, shopping and dining. “There’s nothing like this anywhere else,” Rohatyn says. “Many parents of first-time buyers recognize the great value and are bringing their kids to Kingston House to assist them in buying their first home.” The homes at Kingston House are spacious and inviting, with over-height ceilings on the main and fourth floor, generous patios or covered decks, and huge windows. Engineered stone countertops in the kitchen are complemented by flat-panelled cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. Rich wood laminate

flooring is featured throughout the main areas, with lush carpeting in the bedrooms. Spa-like bathrooms have designerselected imported porcelain tile flooring, engineered stone countertops and a contemporary patterned hand-set ceramic tile tub and shower surround with marble and glass mosaic tile accents. The master ensuite adds another touch of luxury with dual porcelain undermount sinks (most plans) and polished chrome accessories. Outside, the architecture is inspired by the East Coast, with brick cladding, natural wood soffits and black metal detailing. Homeowners at Kingston House will also have access to The Rowing Club; a private residents-only clubhouse featuring over 9,000 sq.ft. of resort-style amenities such as an outdoor pool and spa, gymnasium, fitness facilities, a screening room and other amenities. A resident concierge will be available to assist with your every need, and two fully furnished suites are available for out-of-town guests. Two-bedroom homes start at $259,900. The Cottages at Seabright Farm are located just minutes from the Lower Mainland, but you’ll easily be able to put your worries aside at your historically inspired cottage in a gorgeous ocean-view location. Tons of amenities are just around the corner, including the Point Roberts Marina.
Feeling the breeze at The Cottages at Seabright Farm By Kerry Vital
The Cottages at Seabright Farm is the largest and newest residential project in Point Roberts. Construction recently started, and Lower Mainland residents are flocking to it to purchase their own private piece of paradise. “You can purchase an ocean-view cottage for less than the price of an average condominium in Vancouver,” says Wayne Knowles of Orca Shores LLC, the project’s
developer. Seabright Farm is comprised of 58 lots spread across 62 acres of gently sloping south-facing waterfront. The large lots (1/4 to 1/2 an acre) offer privacy along with the great views and are located in three distinct zones: the Bluff, the Meadows and the Woodlands. Seabright Farm will also have a barn/community centre, greenhouse, outdoor swimming pool and hot tubs, sauna, community vegetable and flower gardens,
and orchards. The trails are perfect for running, cycling or horseback riding, and offer direct access to the beach. Because of both the elevation and south slope of the entire property, you’ll find a gorgeous view no matter where you purchase. The cottage plans range from 850 to over 2,500 square feet, in a variety of two-or-morebedroom floor plans. The styles include open floor plans, stone fireplaces, sunny window seats, hardwood flooring, large relaxing decks and covered porches. All of the plans give owners the option to expand their cottages in the future, whether it’s with a guesthouse, a studio or a separate master suite. Covered decks and breezeways can be built between the buildings, and garages (complete with guest suites) or potting sheds added to truly make your Seabright cottage your own. The cottage designs have been specifically developed to reflect the historical summer cottages and simple farm buildings typical of Point Roberts. That character is obvious when you visit the sales centre, which is actually an original farmhouse from the 1890s that’s been outfitted with finds from garage sales and Pottery Barn. It will become an additional gathering place for Seabright owners, along with the barn-themed community hall that will be used as a venue for neighbourhood
gatherings, art shows for local artists, cooking demonstrations, musical performances and wine tastings, among many other things! And beyond Seabright Farm, Point Roberts has plenty of other things to do, whether you’re staying for a month, a week or just a weekend. Play a round of golf at the 18-hole Point Roberts Golf and Country Club, or pay a visit to the Lighthouse Marine Park to see Orca whales, comb the beach or go clamming or crabbing. The 275-acre Lily Point Marine Reserve is just around the beach corner from Seabright Farm, and features sandy bluffs and tidal flats. The full-service Point Roberts Marina has over 900 slips and is also only minutes away. The Point’s unique restaurants and eclectic shops round out the experience. Canadians looking to purchase a cottage at Seabright Farm will be able to secure attractive long-term financing through a U.S. banking institution with 20 per cent down, and a Real Estate Disclosure Statement has been filed in British Columbia. With the opening of the South Fraser Perimeter Road earlier this year and plans to build a new bridge to replace the tunnel on Hwy 99, getting to Point Roberts is becoming that much more convenient from all parts of the Lower Mainland. The pricing at Seabright Farm is also exceptional, with lots starting at $180,000 U.S., while cottage and lot combinations start at $399,000. For more information about The Cottages at Seabright Farm, visit www. seabrightfarmcottages.com, call tollfree at 1-888-732-6915 or email info@ seabrightfarmcottages.com.

Cyclist questions backpack policy DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter
DAN FERGUSON Langley Times
Cyclist Ryan Patterson says his backpack is no bigger than his wife’s purse, but most Langley merchants won’t let him carry it in their stores.
Free workshop teaches women about real estate
Ryan Patterson understands why many Langley stores have a no-backpacks policy to prevent shoplifting, but the way they enforce it doesn’t seem fair to the avid cyclist, who usually carries his ID, phone and keys in a small pack. Patterson told The Times he is often asked to leave his pack behind the front counter of a store while shoppers with larger diaper bags and women with bigger handbags are not. “It makes no sense,” Patterson said. He said he has gone into a store with his wife, whose purse is about the same size as his backpack, and he has been asked to surrender his pack while she is allowed to keep her handbag. “When I ask why, they say, well, it’s a woman’s handbag,”
Patterson said. He said it is alarming to see his backpack with his ID and other possessions left on a shelf behind a counter that is not staffed at all times. “You’re constantly thinking [in that situation], is my bag safe?” Paterson said. Patterson said he has no issue with the need to prevent shoplifting, but if he is going to turn over his pack, it should at least be stored in a secure place such as a locked room or cupboard. “Like a coat check,” Patterson suggested. If a store can’t provide some measure of safe storage, Patterson feels he should be allowed to keep his backpack, with the understanding it can be inspected the way bags are examined at music concerts. “I have no issue if they want to look through my bag before I leave,” Patterson said.

A free workshop that teaches women how to get into buying real estate will be held in Langley tonight (Thursday). The Women on the Move Workshop is a short and informal session that teaches the basics of investing in income properties. Realtor Sonia Wood said the sessions are “informal, a little goofy, and very easygoing.” “We want women to be able to feel OK about asking questions, even if they think their questions are kind of dumb,” she said. Wood conducts the workshops with another realtor, Carolyn Carson, both of Abbotsford. The session runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For the exact location and to register, email choosewomenonthemove@gmail.com. For more information, visit realestateforwomenonthemove.com.
$175 into his backpack during a visit to a Willoughby liquor store in the 6400 block of 201 Street last year. In March of this year, two men used backpacks to steal meat from the Safeway in the 20800 block of Fraser Highway. When they got into a tussle with a store loss prevention officer, the pair assaulted the officer with pepper spray to escape. A study by the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) found that 87 per cent of Canadian retailers were the victims of some form of retail crime with an average loss of $1,005 a month. Under Canadian law, a search of a customer bag or backpack could be considered unreasonable by a judge unless there was probable cause to believe a criminal offence had been committed.

Patterson said he got in the habit of using a pack because most bicycle clothes don’t come with pockets and he also needs the extra room to carry supplies for his two young daughters. “I can’t put applesauce and spoons in my pockets,” Patterson said. Patterson intends to continue his one-man campaign for safer backpack storage, one merchant at a time. So far, he said, only one local store has been willing to put his pack in a locked room, and only after he insisted. He said other backpack wearers should push, politely, for safer storage, too. Police say backpacks are often used by shoplifters to steal goods. One of several cases reported by Langley RCMP involved a man who slipped three 1.75 litre bottles of vodka worth

Adults time to shine as Canada Day Sports Fest kicks off GARY AH U J A Ti m e s Spo r ts
Typically, it is parents cheering their children on in their respective sports, but the tables will be turned this weekend. That’s because Tourism Langley is presenting Langley Canada Day Sport Fest on June 28 and June 29. The event precedes the Langley Canada Day celebrations on June
30 and July 1. The two-day sports festival will feature master’s lacrosse, bocce and a co-ed seven-on-seven soccer tournament and will be held at the Langley Events Centre and Willoughby Community Park. The lacrosse will be indoors in the LEC fieldhouse and the arena bowl, the soccer will be on the artificial turf fields at the Park and
the bocce will be contested on the newly-opened bocce courts. The courts are located just west of the sand volleyball courts. A few hundred participants, as well as their families, are expected to attend. “There are so many sport tourism events held in Langley each year geared to children and youth,” said Deborah Kulchiski, the execu-
tive director of Tourism Langley. “We really wanted to focus on the recreational adult athletes,” said Tourism Langley’s Mun Bagri. “We figured this was a perfect opportunity.” The action won’t be limited to the field, or just the adults, either, as there will be a bouncy castle, mini golf, and the water park. There will also be food vendors

Outlaws win bronze at provincial tournament
G ARY AH U J A Tim e s Spo r ts
Heading to the provincial championships, coach Frank Lock was told his team would be lucky to win a single game. But his ball hockey squad, the Outlaws, proved the critics wrong, returning from the B.C. provincial ball hockey championships with the
bronze medal. The peewee (U12) team had won the right to represent the Valley Ball Hockey Association after winning the league title on June 14. The provincial championships ran June 20 to June 22. The local team’s lone loss came to the eventual gold medalists from Victoria, who defeated
the Outlaws 2-0 in the semifinals. “Victoria had scored six or more goals in every single game, so to hold them to two goals was quite the feat,” Lock said. “And to come home with the bronze medal, was the icing on the cake. “They really wanted to win something.”
In the third-place game, the Outlaws defeated Tri City 4-1. The team went 1-0-2 during the round robin. “The team played awesome, it was a total team effort,” Lock said. ••• The Outlaws were one of four Valley Ball Hockey Association teams
representing the league at provincials over the weekend. The Warriors pup (U10) team lost in the bronze medal game 5-4 to Tri City on a late goal. The team went 1-1-1 in the round robin and lost 8-5 in the semifinals to Ridge Meadows. “I could not be more

And all those passengers get thirsty so Honda put in 15 cup holders. The third row is a one-motion 60/40 split ‘Magic’ seat that continued on page 40

time they saw one on the road — they’re nearly extinct. “Hill Street Blues” (1976 Dodge Monaco): The opening title sequence of “Hill Street Blues” with a memorable Mike Post theme song and a gritty look featured several fishtailing Dodge Monacos hightailing it out of the precinct. The Monaco in police surplus trim also served as The Bluesmobile in the film “The Blues Brothers.” “Southland” (1999 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor): No list of great cop cars would be complete without the classic Ford Crown Vic. The last full-size
r e a r- w h e e l - d r i v e Ford was produced from 1992-2011. The Crown Vic was the most widely used police car and taxi in the U.S. and Canada, and although they’re starting to give way to the Dodge Charger, they still show up in the rearview mirrors of speeders everywhere. “The Andy Griffith Show” (1963 Ford Galaxie): The Mayberry Police Department was fond of Fords. I’m partial to the ’63 300 Galaxie with the classic gumball-machine light on the roof. Over the years, fans of the show have built hundreds of loving replicas of Sheriff Andy’s cruiser.
“Highway Patrol” (1956 Buick Special): Perhaps the granddaddy of all TV cop shows, rough-hewn Broderick Crawford drove a huge assortment of Oldsmobiles, Buicks and Dodges through the 1955-59 run of the show. I particularly like the ’56 Buick Special. Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance. Hagerty is the world’s leading specialist provider of classic car and boat insurance.
