Former City of Surrey bureaucrat and current councillor will be vying for the centre chair
Three new faces added to Surrey First roster
Hepner is Surrey First’s choice for mayor
Mountie, firefighter, and social services provider join civic coalition by Kevin Diakiw
by Kevin Diakiw
LINDA HEPNER sits in a sofa chair in the living room of her comfortable South Surrey home and tells The Leader in an exclusive interview what many have suspected for some time. It’s the news announced publicly this week that she’s Surrey First’s choice as a mayor heading into this November’s civic election. The only other contender for the job within the ranks of Surrey First was Coun. Bruce Hayne, who stepped aside and said he was backing Hepner. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts – who formed Surrey First in 2007 as a coalition of independents – announced in April that she would not seek re-election this fall. Hepner sat down with The Leader on June 2, with the provision the paper not go public with the news until she was ready. Dressed in a black pantsuit, she Linda Hepner cups her mug of coffee, and wears an easy smile. She says she’s ready for the battle for the mayor’s chair. (Coun. Barinder Rasode, who quit Surrey First in April, told The Leader she would be running for mayor as well). Describing herself as an “experienced senior,” the Fredericton-born Hepner arrived in Surrey in 1985, when she promptly started work with the city.
“It takes a lot of courage to follow in the footsteps of Dianne Watts.”

Personal student info sent to Surrey parents Email incident involved 250 students by Sheila Reynolds
THE SURREY School District has alerted B.C.’s privacy commissioner and is reviewing its procedures after some personal student information was emailed to parents early this week. District spokesman Doug Strachan said the incident involved about 250 students at a single school and the information was sent to parents at that school only. He said while the email message was intended to include a document from Surrey’s superintendent about ongoing teacher job action, a staff person “inadvertently” attached another document. Strachan did not detail what type of information was included or what school was involved, as that would further breach student privacy. “It wasn’t Doug Strachan financial- or medical-related, but would be considered personal or private information under the Privacy Act,” said Strachan. The school staff member noticed the error almost immediately, he said, and sent a follow-up email asking that parents delete the prior message. The school district’s privacy officer was then notified and a letter was prepared and sent to parents of students involved, explaining what happened and who to speak to about concerns or questions.

charges after the attempted abduction of a four-year-old girl at a Surrey playground on the weekend. Surrey RCMP say the father of the child called police on Saturday (June 21) after he
noticed a man speaking to his daughter at the children’s playground in Holland Park near Old Yale Road and 134 Street in Central Surrey. The dad approached his child and asked what the man had said to her. Once he learned what was said (the details of which are not being released), the father approached the man and insisted he leave the park. The man eventually left, police say, but returned a few minutes later wearing different clothing. When the child’s dad saw the man had returned, he grabbed his daughter. The man then approached the father and child and began to shout at the dad, who phoned police. When Surrey RCMP arrived, the man attempted to flee on a bike, but was arrested by police a few blocks away.
Adam Richard Beedle, 32, of no fixed address is charged with one count of attempted abduction of a person under 14, one count of uttering a threat and one count of possessing a controlled substance. He made a court appearance Thursday morning. “The father in this case did the right thing, he was keeping an eye on his child in the park, intervened when he was suspicious of an issue and when the situation became elevated he called police,” said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr. Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or solvecrime.ca to remain anonymous.

Surrey First: Hoping for another sweep From page 1 Woods was an extremely popular presence among Cloverdale residents during his command at that district station. The civic coalition has also selected LeFranc, who was in charge of women’s programs for the Newton Advocacy Group Society for eight years before becoming manager of community projects for Vancity. LeFranc also manages the City of Surrey’s Homelessness and Housing fund. “I’m thrilled to be able to offer up these three candidates as wonderful change,” said mayoral candidate and current city Coun. Linda Hepner. “They’re new candidates, they’re all strong, they all love Surrey and they’re all team players.” As to whether she expects the new names on the coalition to offer the group another sweep on council, Hepner said that’s the idea. “I’m hoping for another sweep. We have shown government works best with a diversified team that works together and gets things done.”
New school: From page 3
The students come to the school for many reasons. Some have a busy high school work load that includes sports or band so they will enrol in an evening course just to get ahead. And with many new immigrants coming to the area, district principal Ted Johnson has seen the programs flourish. “Often professionals come to Canada from other countries, but without a working knowledge of English they find it very difficult to find work,” he said. “We have more Foundations students than we have high school completion students… Many students have been in an executive or management level in their country of origin but just need to upgrade their language skills.”
The new Delta Community College will have nine full-size teaching classrooms, a student lounge, a daycare for both students and the public, a reception area and a computer lab. Standing beneath one of the many skylights cascading natural light into the new facility, Caouette says she is thrilled with the new school. “As Delview Adult Learning Centre, people weren’t sure if we were part of Delview Secondary or not, but as Delta Community College, people will know they can come to the beautiful new building to learn,” she said. “You want to be proud of where you go to school.” For more information about courses and registration email dacadvisors@deltasd.bc.ca or call 604-594-6100.

A fawn hiding in plain sight. FOLLOWING A chance encounter
with a young fawn hiding in plain sight, I emailed a friend
and attached a photograph. She immediately replied: “What a gift!
Her enthusiastic response expresses her heartfelt joy for the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world. The hustle and bustle of everyday living disconnects us from our roots and often overwhelms our minds with artificial noise. Everyone, especially children, should set aside their electronic gadgets from time to time and marvel at the aerodynamic magic of hummingbirds, the seductive design of flowers, the unbelievable life cycle of butterflies, the delicate structure of‌ Let’s face it, the possibilities are endless, only limited by our human imagination. Shame in animal cruelty
THE HORROR STORY that has come to light regarding the abuse of milk cows on Canada’s largest dairy farm is appalling. Not only that, but reliable sources claim this is commonplace across Canada. Cruelty seems to be a part of the life of the animals that help feed us. I suspect it is because they are deemed not to have feelings and emotions. This is a false concept. Scientists are proving that although we humans
consider ourselves as the elite beings on the planet, other life forms feel the same pain, fear, sorrow and loss as we do. I read that the laws in most European countries are far more stringent in regards to the treatment of animals and that North America trails far behind. We should damn well be ashamed of ourselves. “The procedure performed on my wife.”
Hepner: Revitalize the waterfront From page 1 Beginning as executive assistant to city manager Mike Jones, Hepner rose through the ranks and became manager of economic development, film and special events. In 2005, she took a leave of absence to run for city council and won a seat, which she’s kept. She says as mayor, she would bring “experience, steadfastness, team building and courage” to the table. “It takes a lot of courage to follow in the footsteps of Dianne Watts,” Hepner says of the popular mayor. Hepner says that under Watts’ leadership, the city has taken some “enormous strides.” But there’s more that can be done, Hepner says. She wants to focus on economic development and continue working to establish one job per Surrey resident. She wants to turn the King George Boulevard, between 80 and 64 Avenues, into a “Creative Corridor,” inviting all types of performing arts, design businesses and fine arts shops. “That’s my vision,

and that’s what I would be pushing to do.” She also believes Campbell Heights, a large business district near 192 Street and 24 Avenue, is undersold. She wants to see more agri-food industry there as well as aerospace firms. Hepner was economic development manager for the city when Campbell Heights came to fruition. She describes it as the best land to build on this side of Burlington, Ontario. More can, and will, be done on that vast property, she vows. Crime reduction is also a key challenge that Hepner wants to address. But she says it’s “myopic and simplistic” to just throw more police at the problem. Innovative solutions include getting more civilians to do the desk work, so guncarrying police can be out on the road where they belong. “Get the police officers doing the real police work,” Hepner says. She also wants to do more about the root causes of crime. Some of the things she’s considering is regulating all drug and alcohol recovery

homes so they all meet an acceptable standard. More also needs to be done for at-risk youth, she says. She also wants to “reinvigorate” the Block Watch program, which is falling away in communities such as Newton. Newton itself needs some attention she says, and under her watch, the community will get it. She wants to relocate the Newton ice arena, and create a centre for excellence on ice elsewhere in the community. Where else, she asks, do you see an ice rink in the centre of the community? In its place, she wants to work with the private sector to get a mixture of commercial and residential at the Newton site. She thinks a hotel and trade and convention centre should be located at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. And Hepner also wants to increase the pressure on TransLink to bring this city more effective public transit. Like Watts, Hepner wants to see at-grade rail in the city as soon as possible. Hepner also noted TransLink has been operating under

flawed data when they determine population density (usually used to justify levels of service). TransLink has been determining Surrey’s density by factoring in the entire land mass, including the 33 per cent that’s Agricultural Land Reserve. As it’s set aside for important food harvest, Hepner says it shouldn’t be used in the formula. When the ALR is excluded, Surrey has the same population density as Burnaby, Hepner says. She informed the transportation authority of that two years ago, and says things are changing because of it. Hepner says there are also fun things the city could be doing. With an effort to get more people to the waterfront on the Fraser River, Hepner wants to see a ferris wheel on the beach by the Pattullo Bridge. “Why can’t I have a ferris wheel there?” Hepner asks. “Why can’t I have something that brings kids to the waterfront?” She would also like to see fireworks, or anything that will attracts families to Brownsville Bar. “I’d like to do something that activates the waterfront.” She also wants to make use of Surrey Lake, a body of water created more than a decade ago at 75 Avenue and 152 Street. “Either bring in some sand, make it a beach, let somebody utilize it, or don’t call it Surrey Lake,” Hepner says. “Because it certainly isn’t.” She says it’s “begging for attention,” and it either gets it, or the name should come off. Overall, she says she’s extremely pleased with the economic environment that’s been created over the last decade in this city. “I’m tremendously proud of that. I don’t think that’s happened anywhere else in the country.” Knowing mayoral hopeful Rasode has begun garnering support, Hepner says the civic campaign has already started. The election will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15.

By far my new favourite place to get my tea. Huge selection, and I love the mix-and-match option. I’ve found so many new favourite drinks without having to worry about buying a whole box and not liking it (which happened when I first bought my Keurig, and made me wary of buying full boxes without trying it first). I love the sugar-free syrups as well. Buttered rum syrup + white hot chocolate K-Cup = :) The staff are also very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend. – Christine

from the list of agricultural uses that qualify for the lower agricultural tax rate. Several Lower Mainland cities had feared they might lose property tax revenue if new cannabis producers set up on industrial land and then ask B.C. Assessment to convert them to farm tax status. “There’s a collective sigh of relief among municipalities, Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said of the decision, which takes effect in 2015. The provincial government is also advising municipalities not to try to ban medical marijuana operators from the Agricultural Land Reserve, cautioning that they might face a court challenge. Several cities have passed bylaws allowing pot producers to operate only on industrial land, so the highly secure bunker-like buildings don’t effectively pave over productive farmland. While the province views medical pot as a viable ALR use, it would not qualify for farm tax status there either, joining the ranks of gravel pits, wineries and other activities allowed in the ALR but denied the reduced tax rate. The federal government has so far issued five medical marijuana production licenses in B.C. to operators in Central Saanich, Maple Ridge, Whistler, Nanaimo and Spallumcheen. Hundreds of other licence applications are under consideration. But the federal government’s shift to a system of commercial growers remains under a legal cloud, awaiting a court challenge by authorized medical pot users who want to retain the right to grow their own.

Police seek Accord driver by Sheila Reynolds A 16-YEAR-OLD motor-
cyclist is dead after allegedly being cut off by a driver, who then fled the scene. Surrey RCMP say the collision took place just before 11 p.m. Tuesday (June 24) near the intersection of 96 Avenue and 123A Street . Police say several witnesses said they saw a silver Honda Accord driving eastbound on 96 Avenue in the fast lane signalling to turn left on 123A Street. The motorcycle was driving eastbound on 96 Avenue in the fast lane when the Honda allegedly turned left in front of the motorcycle. The driver, say police, continued driving north on 123A Street for about a block before abandoning the car and fleeing on foot. The teen motorcyclist was taken to hospital but died of his injuries.
Police at the scene used dogs to attempt to track the suspect, with no luck. Investigators are attempting to contact the registered owner of the Honda and are trying to get a physical description of the driver. “Once again, by leaving the scene of an accident, a driver has elevated a Motor Vehicle Act investigation to a criminal matter and will have to suffer the consequences of that decision,” said Cpl. Bert Paquet. The Surrey RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team (CCIT) is investigating with the assistance of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS). Anyone with further information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-TIPS (8477).

Pedestrian struck June 2
by Sheila Reynolds POLICE ARE looking for
two drivers who may have seen a man get hit by a car in Surrey early in June. On June 2, a 52-yearold was crossing the street on foot near 128 Street and 83 Avenue when he was struck. He later died in hospital. While the 17-year-old driver of the Acura that hit him stayed on scene and is co-operating with Surrey RCMP, there are two drivers who may have additional information who police would like to speak with. The first is the driver of a grey sedan, possibly a Honda, that was headed southbound in the lefthand lane of 128 Street. Witnesses reported the driver of the sedan honked his horn at the pedestrian and may have exchanged words with him before driving away. Moments later the pedestrian was struck. The other driver police are seeking was in a dark-
coloured quad pick-up truck with distinctive wooden side rails around the box. It’s believed the truck stopped in the lefthand southbound lane to let the pedestrian cross and subsequently may have seen the man get hit by the car in the righthand southbound lane. Witnesses described the driver of the truck as a Caucasian male. Surveillance photos of the vehicles can be viewed at surreyleader. com “While the driver of the vehicle involved is cooperating with police, our officers still need to collect all the necessary evidence from every possible key witness so that we can complete a comprehensive investigation,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet. Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca

by Sheila Reynolds THE CONDITION of a pedes-
trian struck on King George Boulevard in Surrey Monday night has been upgraded from critical to serious. A 47-year-old man was rushed to Royal Columbian Hospital at about 11 p.m. June 23 after being struck by a car near 92 Avenue and King George. Surrey RCMP said a sedan
was driving northbound in the curb lane when it struck the pedestrian, who was crossing from the east side of the street. It was dark and raining lightly and he was not at an intersection or a cross walk, police said. The man was taken to hospital with head injuries and multiple internal injuries, but as of Tuesday morning, his condition had been upgraded. Police said the driver is

Taxes: Increase possible From page 17 contribution on on new capital and operations costs for HandyDart, noting that has always been TransLink’s sole responsibility in the past. “Substantially, this would appear to be a good plan,” Stone said, adding “a bit more work” is needed to determine how it will be financed. If the mayors agree to hold the referendum sometime next spring – and not during this November’s municipal elections – Stone said the wording of the question would not have to be decided until this fall. The province would also have to determine how to implement a new regional carbon tax and assess all the costs and economic impacts from a higher tax on vehicle fuels, home heating and industry. Although the mayors have consistently opposed further increases in property tax over and above the extra three per cent lift TransLink is automatically permitted each year, Stone once again pointed them back to that option. “As property taxes are not a new source of funding, any increases would not be subject to referendum,” Stone’s letter to the Mayors’ Council states. “I encourage the Mayors’ Council to give further consideration to this opportunity.” The Mayors’ Council meets again today (Thursday) to consider its next steps.

Artist donates tribute to beloved teacher Terry Fox Elementary remembers Mrs. Loland
by Vikki Hopes A SURREY artist is
helping to keep the memory of a beloved teacher alive by creating a mural on a wall at an Abbotsford elementary school. Almost five months ago, the students, teachers and parents of Terry Fox Elementary gathered on the grounds of Abbotsford Regional Hospital, beneath the
room of ailing teacher Julie Loland. There, on a wet, cold, winter day, they sang their school’s theme, The Terry Fox Song, to help buoy her spirits and show how much they cared about her. Loland, 37, who had been battling cancer, died the following day, on Jan. 31, leaving an entire school in mourning. On Monday, the
Fox Song for their beloved teacher. This time it was in the warm summer sun at Babich Park – across from the school – at a celebration of Loland’s life. Teachers, students, parents and friends paid tribute to the woman they described as Julie Loland school gathered once again to sing The Terry

n Friday June 20th, 2014, in a Montreal courtroom, after deliberating four days, a jury convicted Emma Czornobaj, 25, of two counts each of criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death. The charges followed from a fatal crash in which a father and his daughter riding tandem on his motorcycle plowed into Ms. Czornobaj’s vehicle stopped in the left (passing) lane of a highway south of Montreal, and from which she had alighted to help ducklings crossing the highway. Criminal negligence causing death carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment; dangerous driving causing death a maximum sentence of 14 years. Ms. Czornobaj, who had no previous criminal record, is employed as a financial advisor. At the time of the crash she was a 21-year-old university student who had been driving for three years. In the online ‘court of public opinion’—see, for example, the 167 comments following the CTV news online coverage or the 477 comments following the Global TV coverage—vigorous debate began almost immediately after the verdict. The majority question whether criminalizing such an act is an appropriate use of the criminal justice system. The criminal law, they say, is not about punishing lack of common sense or foolishness or stupidity no matter the terrible consequences. The criminalization of the behaviour in this case seems also to have
overcome the usual reluctance to criticize a victim. Many of the comments point out that, “Proper operation of a motor vehicle DEMANDS that you be able to stop before hitting a vehicle that is stopping, or has stopped in front of you. PERIOD.” Selfidentified motorcyclists agree with this. For example: “My issue is with the criminal conviction. I would like to know how it was proven that she acted with “wanton or reckless disregard for the lives or safety of other persons” (that is how the law defines criminal negligence). She acted carelessly. The fact that her carelessness resulted in the tragic deaths of two people does not make her actions criminal. …I’ve been a motorcyclist for 25 years and cannot imagine any scenario in which this accident was unavoidable unless the motorcycle operator was every bit as careless as the young woman driving the car.” But even those who support the verdict generally agree that a harsh sentence would also be an injustice. For example: “The verdict was the easy part as the facts seem to speak for themselves. The real problem will be the sentence. I am not a soft-on-crime type and I know that two people died as a result of this young lady’s actions but I would not like to see her get a long prison term.” Most news reports say Ms. Czornobaj is remorseful, regrets her actions and would never do the same thing again. The wife and mother of the two victims said to reporters at the Montreal court she would not comment on Czornobaj’s possible sentence and that she didn’t have any ill will towards her. “It’s time that we go on,” she said. “This will not bring (back) my loved ones.”

inspirational; passionate about life, teaching and her family; and as having an infectious spirit. “We’ve been so lucky to even have a glimpse of the love and passion that was our Mrs. Loland,” said fellow teacher Heather Chan. Student-crafted floral paintings lined the chain-link fences of the park, acknowledging Loland’s love for art, which was also reflected in a huge tribute to her that was completed only an hour before the gathering. A 50x20-foot mural, created by Surrey airbrush artist Travis Vagner now graces a wall on the west side of the building, overlooking the school’s basketball court.

asked for suggestions for his next project. He received several ideas, including the one in tribute to Loland. He researched the background, and the story moved him. “The reason I liked this was it was a cool project – the way the whole school came together,” Vagner said. He met with a group of about 10 teachers and administrators to brainstorm ideas. The final project – his largest ever – took him about 10 days to complete. School principal Luigi DeMarzo said the artwork is a legacy to a teacher who deeply cared about teaching and children. The left portion of the painting features a poem titled “A Hummingbird,” written by Loland in 2012 while she was undergoing her struggle with cancer. For Loland, hummingbirds symbolized “living in the present and being mindful of the world around us,” Chan explained at the celebration of life. A pair of red gumboots was added to the mural in memory of the footwear that Loland often sported. A large portion of the mural represents the scene on the Abbotsford Regional Hospital grounds, with a large hummingbird hovering overhead. Blossoms on each side of the painting are orchids, Loland’s favourite flower. The artwork was initiated by Vagner who, a few months ago, posted on his Facebook page that he wanted to do a donated mural project. He had previously done so at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children in Vancouver, and
Michelle De Jager, planted a tree. At the celebration of life, mourners tied ribbons of yellow, blue and purple – Loland’s favourite colours – around its branches. A blue bucket will hang from the tree through the summer, inviting the community to keep it watered. Loland taught in the Abbotsford school district for about 10 years, and had been at Terry Fox Elementary since 2004. She was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in January 2012 which metastasized to her lymph nodes while she was pregnant with her third child. Loland was dealing with a second round of chemotherapy and raising her three young sons – ages one, four and eight at the time of her death – with her husband Reuben while earning her master’s of education degree in educational practice from Simon Fraser University.

Premier living at Polygon’s Kingston House
Heritage-style elegance is at top of mind at Polygon’s Kingston House, a collection of two-bedroom apartment residences in a master-planned community that is inspired by an Ivy League legacy. “You can move in this summer,” says sales manager Judy Rohatyn. “With payments from $899 a month, this is a great opportunity for first-time buyers to purchase a home in the South Surrey market.” Kingston House is the first apartment collection at Polygon’s Harvard Gardens, a master-planned community that is also
close to top schools, golf courses, shopping and dining. “There’s nothing like this anywhere else,” Rohatyn says. “Many parents of first-time buyers recognize the great value and are bringing their kids to Kingston House to assist them in buying their first home.” The homes at Kingston House are spacious and inviting, with over-height ceilings on the main and fourth floor, generous patios or covered decks, and huge windows. Engineered stone countertops in the kitchen are complemented by flat-panelled cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. Rich wood laminate

flooring is featured throughout the main areas, with lush carpeting in the bedrooms. Spa-like bathrooms have designerselected imported porcelain tile flooring, engineered stone countertops and a contemporary patterned hand-set ceramic tile tub and shower surround with marble and glass mosaic tile accents. The master ensuite adds another touch of luxury with dual porcelain undermount sinks (most plans) and polished chrome accessories. Outside, the architecture is inspired by the East Coast, with brick cladding, natural wood soffits and black metal detailing. Homeowners at Kingston House will also have access to The Rowing Club; a private residents-only clubhouse featuring over 9,000 sq.ft. of resort-style amenities such as an outdoor pool and spa, gymnasium, fitness facilities, a screening room and other amenities. A resident concierge will be available to assist with your every need, and two fully furnished suites are available for out-of-town guests. Two-bedroom homes start at $259,900. The Cottages at Seabright Farm are located just minutes from the Lower Mainland, but you’ll easily be able to put your worries aside at your historically inspired cottage in a gorgeous ocean-view location. Tons of amenities are just around the corner, including the Point Roberts Marina.
Feeling the breeze at The Cottages at Seabright Farm
By Kerry Vital
The Cottages at Seabright Farm is the largest and newest residential project in Point Roberts. Construction recently started, and Lower Mainland residents are flocking to it to purchase their own private piece of paradise. “You can purchase an ocean-view cottage for less than the price of an average condominium in Vancouver,” says Wayne Knowles of Orca Shores LLC, the project’s
developer. Seabright Farm is comprised of 58 lots spread across 62 acres of gently sloping south-facing waterfront. The large lots (1/4 to 1/2 an acre) offer privacy along with the great views and are located in three distinct zones: the Bluff, the Meadows and the Woodlands. Seabright Farm will also have a barn/community centre, greenhouse, outdoor swimming pool and hot tubs, sauna, community vegetable and flower gardens,
and orchards. The trails are perfect for running, cycling or horseback riding, and offer direct access to the beach. Because of both the elevation and south slope of the entire property, you’ll find a gorgeous view no matter where you purchase. The cottage plans range from 850 to over 2,500 square feet, in a variety of two-or-morebedroom floor plans. The styles include open floor plans, stone fireplaces, sunny window seats, hardwood flooring, large relaxing decks and covered porches. All of the plans give owners the option to expand their cottages in the future, whether it’s with a guesthouse, a studio or a separate master suite. Covered decks and breezeways can be built between the buildings, and garages (complete with guest suites) or potting sheds added to truly make your Seabright cottage your own. The cottage designs have been specifically developed to reflect the historical summer cottages and simple farm buildings typical of Point Roberts. That character is obvious when you visit the sales centre, which is actually an original farmhouse from the 1890s that’s been outfitted with finds from garage sales and Pottery Barn. It will become an additional gathering place for Seabright owners, along with the barn-themed community hall that will be used as a venue for neighbourhood
gatherings, art shows for local artists, cooking demonstrations, musical performances and wine tastings, among many other things! And beyond Seabright Farm, Point Roberts has plenty of other things to do, whether you’re staying for a month, a week or just a weekend. Play a round of golf at the 18-hole Point Roberts Golf and Country Club, or pay a visit to the Lighthouse Marine Park to see Orca whales, comb the beach or go clamming or crabbing. The 275-acre Lily Point Marine Reserve is just around the beach corner from Seabright Farm, and features sandy bluffs and tidal flats. The full-service Point Roberts Marina has over 900 slips and is also only minutes away. The Point’s unique restaurants and eclectic shops round out the experience. Canadians looking to purchase a cottage at Seabright Farm will be able to secure attractive long-term financing through a U.S. banking institution with 20 per cent down, and a Real Estate Disclosure Statement has been filed in British Columbia. With the opening of the South Fraser Perimeter Road earlier this year and plans to build a new bridge to replace the tunnel on Hwy 99, getting to Point Roberts is becoming that much more convenient from all parts of the Lower Mainland. The pricing at Seabright Farm is also exceptional, with lots starting at $180,000 U.S., while cottage and lot combinations start at $399,000. For more information about The Cottages at Seabright Farm, visit www. seabrightfarmcottages.com, call tollfree at 1-888-732-6915 or email info@ seabrightfarmcottages.com.

Take a paidcation this summer
study, 40 per cent of Canadians say they can’t afford a vacation and only 43 per cent said they take all their vacation days. One estimate by expedia.ca put the cost of unused vacations in Canada at $6 billion a year. On the other hand, thousands of Canadians will go away this summer, racking up high spending bills that will put an even bigger dent in their already troubled finances. So, should you skip vacation for the sake of your financial health? Unless you are in major financial crisis, I would advise against forfeiting your hardearned holiday, because you actually need the time off. Instead, consider taking a paidcation, which the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies suggests for individuals and families who want to keep their debt or spending in check. What’s a paidcation? Simply put, it’s tailoring
a vacation to funds that are currently available or can be saved in advance. The first step is to establish a disciplined vacation budget that will not drive you into further debt or place undue stress on your finances. Once you have determined how much you can afford to spend, based on funds in hand or that you will save before your holiday, carefully plan your activities and/or travel to fit this budget.

Your plan could range from picnicking at local parks and beaches to flying off to an exotic location for a week – it
all depends on your available funds. What is critical is that you don’t want to finance your plan with a credit card or other borrowing. Here are seven suggestions to help you do this: • Think local Consider visiting attractions and destinations in the province rather than taking an overseas trip. DID YOU KNOW: Iron deficiency is the leading nutrient deficiency worldwide, and the #1 cause of fatigue in females who menstruate. Fatigue, rapid heartbeat, cold hands and feet, brittle hair and nails, shortness of breath, dizziness, pale skin, leg cramps, insomnia: it can be difficult to pinpoint the cause of these non-specific symptoms, so make sure iron deficiency is not one of the suspects. Did you know it takes roughly 3 months for all of your iron-deficient blood cells to die off and be replaced by new ones? It is usually not enough to take an iron supplement for just a few weeks, but nobody wants to suffer the side effects of traditional iron pills for longer than that. Try Floradix Formula, a natural, vegetarian, plant-based source of iron from Salus. Even if you haven’t tipped into true “iron deficiency”, it’s a great way to supplement your iron stores and ensure that low iron is not holding you back from getting in shape for the summer. Floradix is easy on the stomach and safe for children over the age of 2. Call or visit with one of our knowledgeable pharmacists to see if Floradix Formula Liquid Iron and Vitamins is right for you.

Save: Lots of ways to keep your money From page 29 • Consider rental homes Hotels may offer the five-star treatment, but if you’re watching your money, look into rental properties for trips away from home. According to TripAdvisor, vacation rentals can result in hundreds of dollars less in spending than hotel costs. Families can save, for example, by renting property with a kitchen, allowing them to cook rather than spend money on restaurant bills. • Time it right Your costs can vary depending on the time of your vacation. Orbitz found that hotel rates are generally cheaper in June than July for top summer vacation destinations. If possible, move your vacation to a time that will provide the best savings, even it’s not in the official summer months. Also, if you plan to travel abroad, watch exchange rates and buy foreign currency when the Canadian dollar increases in strength, to ensure you get the most bang for your buck. • Pay cash Credit cards provide a convenient way to pay for those occasional big-ticket needs, but if you suffer from VSSS, otherwise known as vacation spending spree syndrome (okay, I coined that one), I suggest you go old school – cash. Determine the maximum amount to spend daily, based on your budget, withdraw it in cash, and use it to pay for your expenses. Once the cash runs out, resist the urge to reach for your credit or debit card. • Watch what and where you eat Food can be a major expense during vacations. Limit restaurant visits to lunch to avoid the more expensive dinner menu. If possible, make and carry packed lunches with you when you hit the town. • Keep daily tabs on your spending Last, but not least, check you spending at the end of each day to see how you’re doing with your budget. If you have an idea how much you should be sending daily, you can quickly tell if you’re on track or need to rein in your spending. Unlike the typical approach to vacation expenses, a paidcation is based on determining spending limits before your vacation plan, rather than organizing and taking the vacation and then trying to fit the aftermath into your financial picture. And the best thing about it – there are no bills to pay when it’s over. The only thing to worry about is saving for the next one. Kathy McGarrigle is Chief Operating Officer for Coast Capital Savings, Canada’s largest credit union by membership size.

team players both on and off the field, talented young B.C. athletes are tirelessly pursuing success in all aspects of their lives. Balancing softball, school, community charity work, friendships, personal responsibilities and more is no easy feat, but these girls have shown that they really can do it all. “They’re so intelligent and have great team unity,” said Glenn Kirkpatrick, speaking about his South Surrey Thunder 99 team. “We have participated as tournament hosts for events and have donated money towards the Children’s Hospital and the Pearl of Africa program,” he said of his team’s fundraising efforts. “There has been a number of times over the past four years where the girls have played as many as five or six games in a day,” added Kirkpatrick. “The determination that these girls have shown both physically and mentally in order to continue competing has been amazing and they have truly inspired the community.” Bob Buchan is the coach of the PoCo Ravens 97 and president of the Port Coquitlam Minor Softball Association for 30 years. Like Kirkpatrick, he is proud of the girls on his team as they strive to be great players and a part of their local community. This summer, Buchan celebrated his team’s hard work and dedication with a trip to California to check out Disneyland and also squeeze in some game play. them on the roster when they venture off to college. ‘Learn to Play’ clinics give the older players the opportunity to teach little ones how to play ball. These clinics are an
integral part of many of the softball associations in the province and provide aspiring athletes with the confidence and skills they need to succeed. “As part of fulfilling the volunteer hours for
the Cloverdale association, our team has been running a Learn to Play clinic once a week,” said Evan Dickhof, coach of the Cloverdale Fury 99 team. “It’s a great way for them to pass along their skills to the younger
generation and motivate them to reach for their goals.” For some local coaches, this championship may be one of the last before their girls move up in the league or go off to play college
softball. “My favourite moments have just been seeing the smiles on their faces when they get a play correct, blast a ball deep into outfield, or just are having fun with their teammates,” added
Dickhof. “I will miss these players but nothing makes me happier than knowing that they will always enjoy the game and be friends for life, no matter where they end up.” These amazing
athletes are still here for now, and you can catch them and other local BC softball players as they compete in the 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship July 11-21 in Surrey. For more information, visit CanadianOpenFastpitch. com

Chiefs sweep Jays Whalley wins three of five PBL games by Rick Kupchuk
THE WHALLEY Chiefs have been a winning team over their last 20 games, but it’s not been enough to climb into the top eight of the B.C. Premier Baseball League (PBL). Last week, winning three of five games over a four-day span couldn’t get them any closer to the eighth-place Abbotsford Cardinals. The Cards traveled to Vancouver Island, where they won three of four games to sit one and one-half games ahead of the Chiefs, who have a dozen games remaining on their schedule. Eight teams advance to the PBL playoffs. Whalley swept a double header from the North Delta Blue Jays Saturday, then won one of two games on the road Sunday against the Vancouver Cannons to improve to 15-21 (wonlost) on the season. The Chiefs topped North Delta 4-1 and 1-0 Saturday, getting a pair of complete-game pitching efforts. Max Williams was the winning pitcher in game one, allowing one earned run on three hits and a pair of walks with five strikeouts. North Delta scored in the top of the first inning on an Evan Rogers single that scored Malcolm Boehm, but the Chiefs responded with a two-run single from Spencer Rankin that allowed Mitch Williams and Lichel Hirakawa-Kao to cross the plate. In game two, Thomas Espig tossed a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts for the victory. He allowed just one walk. Jays pitchers Jonathan Cote and Bryantt Pawliw combined for a one-hitter, but a wild pitch in the fifth inning allowed Hirakawa-Kao to score the game’s only run. In Sunday’s first game against the Cannons, the Chiefs left 11 runners on base in a 5-1 loss. The offense, led by Lucas Soper, was more productive in the second game, a 4-3 Whalley win. Soper was three-for-four with a run batted in (RBI), and also stole his seventh base of the season. The Blue Jays were also away from home
Sunday, winning one of two games with the Coquitlam Reds. After the Reds rolled to an 8-2 win in the first game, North Delta rapped out 11 hits to win the second contest 6-2. Kyle Lee was threefor-four with a pair of RBIs and a run scored to lead the offense. Boehm, Ryo Takenaka and Brock Morgan had a pair of hits each. Both local teams lost last Thursday evening, with the Jays falling 3-2 on the road to the first-place Langley Blaze, while the Chiefs were blanked 4-0 by the Coquitlam Reds at Whalley Stadium. Tyler Hoefer threw five solid innings for North Delta in Langley, but was forced to take the loss. The Sands Secondary student allowed three earned runs on seven hits and a pair of
walks while stricking out five Blaze batters. Takanaka led the offense with a pair of singles and an RBI. In Whalley, Cole Hunt threw seven innings without surrendering a run, but didn’t get a decision as the game was scoreless going into the eighth inning. Hunt allowed three hits and a trio of walks while collecting nine strikeouts. Coquitlam scored four times in the extra inning on three walks, a hit and a Chiefs error. Max Williams was the top Chiefs batter, going two-for-four with a double. The Chiefs and Blue Jays play at home tonight, with the Cardinals the visitors at North Delta’s Mackie Park at 6 p.m. while the Blaze are in Whalley at 7 p.m.

Art that’s on – and off – the wall Juried exhibition ARTS 2014 offers a diverse and experimental selection of artwork by new and experienced artists by Sheila Reynolds
T
o have your artwork chosen for this year’s juried art exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery was no small feat. While there are about 60 diverse works gracing the walls and display cases inside the main gallery space for ARTS 2014, jurors had to select the pieces from 160 that were submitted by hopeful artists. The result is a carefully assembled exhibit showcasing the skill, creativity, emotion, innovation – and often, humour – of dozens of experienced and emerging artists working in an array of media. There are paintings
with oil, acrylic and ink, and drawings with pastels and pencil crayons. And sculptural items that have been woven and carved, stitched and moulded. Regardless of background, profession, or preference in exterior colour, few vehicles in the world bring people together as stongly as Mazda’s MX-5.
Alexandra Straub
’’
Stowe, Vermont – Despite the relatively early call time, a group of almost 100 Mazda Miata/MX-5 drivers/ passengers gathers for the morning’s meeting. The weather is looking favourable even though the a.m. envelops the crowd with its chilliness. It’s not raining though. That’s a good sign. Tour organizer and former Trillium Miata Club president, Gary Svoboda, talks about the day’s journey, addresses some basic housekeeping rules, makes some jokes and engages in witty banter with a group of excited Miata enthusiasts. Everyone is ready to hit the roads of Vermont in their tiny, drop top, two-doors. Everything from first generations Miatas, to the latest and greatest rear-wheel drive roadsters line the gravel parking lot of our home base, also known as the Stowehof Inn. Stowe, VT’s claim to fame is as a ski destination. Currently, its claim to fame is the 46 Mazdas that drove in from Ontario and are congregating for their annual tour. Each May long weekend, a group of club members look forward to the event. It’s been going for over 20 years and hasn’t disappointed. The crowd gets rowdier by the minute so go-time is just around the corner. The meeting wraps up; we branch into our respective groups and fire up the engines. As honorary members for the event, my co-pilot – aka my mother Zsuzsanna Straub – and I get behind the wheel of our MX-5. Within moments, we’re topless. The car. Not us! Seven vehicles comprise a group, including a leader and a sweeper. We’re comfortably nestled in the bosom of the pack. Our job is to enjoy ourselves, as well as give the MX-5 a little bit of room to romp free. It’s hard not to smile on the undulating roads of Vermont, which are lined with trees, houses, fields and topped off with a bovine scent! Then there is what is called “The Notch.” A mountain road where emaciated limbs of indigenous trees look like they’re reaching out and trying to touch the cars. Boulders are scattered and the path is paved around it. The intermittent obstacles would likely be the outcome of two Greek gods having a rock fight.

You would have to have superhuman strength to move them. The sinuous and slender road is a hoot to drive through especially with no one in front of you. The occasional crackling on the CB radios frequently is overpowered by instructions from the leader. Like a mother duck summoning her young, we followed in order. We stuck together and took in some breathtaking scenery of New England. Scenery aside, what was the most interesting to breathe in was the enthusiasm and energy of the Miata owners. Another owner decided to turn his conventional doors into ones that open up not out. At breakfast, lunch and dinner, they regale each other with stories of other events they’ve been on. Outbursts of laughter perk up the ears of bystanders; making them wish they were at that table reliving the memories. The camaraderie of those young and young at heart is undisputable.
