Secondary suites authority bylaw rejected BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake town councillors on Monday rejected second reading of a land use bylaw amendment that would have seen secondary suite authority delegated to the development officer. Several residents spoke at the bylaw’s public hearing, noting their disapproval of the proposed amendment. Some councillors felt it would be better to address the issue as part of a land use bylaw review. “It seems to me like we’re trying to make a decision on something that we’re going to be reconsidering when we review the land use bylaw,” said Councillor Jas Payne. “It almost seems like the sort of decision that we should be putting off until we have that land use bylaw review.”

Members of the Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care committee were presented with a cheque for $12,547 by the Spirit of Sylvan Yuletide Festival and Market committee last Wednesday evening. The money was raised from last November’s festival. This was the second donation from the festival which last year contributed $12,256. CONNIE PICARD

Ambulatory Care Committee new name for urgent care initiative BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

There’s a new name for Sylvan Lake area’s urgent care initiative, but the goals of the committee, which has been working for three years, have not changed. Susan Samson, chair of the committee, used a cheque presentation last Wednesday to update the group’s largest contributor about what’s happening. She and members of her committee attended a Spirit of Sylvan Yuletide Festival and Market meeting and accepted a cheque for $12,547, proceeds from the second annual festival last November. “We’ve been going with urgent care,” she said, “but it’s apparent the province is not going to build urgent care”. As a result they’ve changed their name to Ambulatory Care Committee, Sylvan Lake Area.

“The name was changed to fit the model available to us under Family Care Centres,” Samson said. Last month, the Alberta government set aside $45 million in funding for Family Care Centres that could be used for an ambulatory care clinic. Sylvan Lake was identified as one of nine in Alberta to move to the next stage of the Family Care Centre proposal process. With the name change, Samson assured their goals haven’t changed. They’re for a facility which provides service seven days a week for extended hours (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.); medical attention for nonlife threatening injuries, health services provided by doctors, nurses and other appropriate health professionals, examination and observation spaces and convenient access to lab and diagnostic imaging. “There are lots of options where the site may end up being,” said Samson. “We’re going into the com-

munity to talk to core groups — physicians, special interest groups — to ask what’s missing. Once we figure out that it will determine space.” The committee has engaged JLT Management to consult and help them through the process. “We expect to have a business plan on the desk of the minister (of health) by mid-September. In a perfect world I would suggest we could have something happening in the summer of 2015,” said Samson The business case will identify a location, space required, services provided and operational costs for an

With the most recent donation, the committee now has slightly over $45,000 from major donations by groups such as the Yuletide Festival and businesses like Tim Hortons, as well as donations from individuals around the community and region. Summer is a time to play in great outdoors Summer’s here and it seems like the days should be taken advantage of, used and grabbed up quickly in handfuls of happiness, before they slip away like grains of sand in an hourglass. It is a sad but true fact, that all too quickly, the season, for all its lush beauty and fragile good looks, can disappear in a blinding snowstorm, hidden once again under the bleak harshness of winter. I love the way summer arrives. It’s not like it makes a big announcement. It’s more like simply waking up one morning and being surprised because it is here. Branches heavy with fragrant lilac blossoms, grass so green it shimmers in the sunshine, and roses, shy, gentle roses playing with the wind in roadside ditches seem to be all over the place. But for me at least, driving back and forth to work, simply absorbing all this amazing beauty through my cracked windshield is not enough.

summer’s day to not do very much at all but have fun. I liked being with my brother and if I could have one minute of that day back again, I would, in a heartbeat. I think about this as I watch my daughter come up to the clubhouse lugging her clubs in a faded pink bag. “I got them for $5 at a garage sale,” she said with a shy smile. “The bag was included.” And so it began. The game. We didn’t talk much. We didn’t have to. The sun was happy and so were we. Once again I was grateful for one moment in time granted me to be with someone I loved; just laughing, playing and hanging out. It was great, actually it was better than great. It was perfect! Even though she beat me!

Guns are not the issue Dear Editor, After reading the June 12th Letter to the Editor, written by Ian Mclean, entitled “Need stricter gun control; remember what generation sacrificed 70 years ago,” I have determined that his call for stricter gun control has more to do with promoting class distinction and less to do with protecting the individual. In fact, I contend he is really calling for the end of guns among the citizenry. If this was really about saving the lives of common citizens and not just protecting police officers, I suspect Mclean would have submitted a Letter to the Editor, two months ago, calling for the banning of knives when Matthew de Grood, son of a Calgary police officer, stabbed and killed five University of Calgary students in what was called the city’s worst mass-murder in history? Since Mclean suggested we honour our forefathers for their sacrifice on Juno Beach, let me say why I agree with that by explaining what their purpose

I want more. I want to do stuff. I want to golf. I want to tee up my golf ball and feel the satisfying smack of the ball as it sails into the air, finally landing impossibly close to the green. Okay. I would be happy to walk down the fairway, feeling the happy face of the sun smiling all over me. A good shot is a bonus and an excellent shot is a fantasy. Just being out there playing means I’m in the game, not on the sidelines and that is quite good enough for me. I want to play ball. I want to stand at home plate and hear the staccato smack of the bat as it connects with a ball that goes flying way out past the centre fielder.

Okay, I would be happy with a plastic bat and a few grandchildren on my team in the middle of a field somewhere yelling ‘hit it, grandma’. But, seriously, even though fantasy and reality are usually quite a distance from each other, summer is a time to play in the huge playground Mother Nature has obligingly lent to us for a very short time. Last Wednesday I did just that. I did more than talk the talk. I walked the walk. I went golfing. “I golfed with your brother years ago,” the guy behind the counter at the clubhouse said. “He was a very good golfer.” I smile. My brother was a good golfer, I muse. I had golfed with him at this very course, but I don’t remember his awesome shots on the fairway or his great putting skill on the green. I just remember being perfectly and absolutely happy because the two of us had sliced out a piece of a

was. On D-Day, they joined our allies to fight against Hitler and his National Socialist Party who oppressed the Germans, murdered the Jews, and was attempting to take total control over neighbouring parts of Europe. One might ask how Hitler gained so much power over such a short period. Well, before Hitler even came into power, the existing democracy was called the Weimar Republic. With seemingly the best of intentions, those in power ordered all guns registered; naively thinking it would ensure the protection of its people. The people were assured that all the personal information gathered in the process, would be guarded and would not fall into enemy hands. Shortly afterward, Hitler was democratically voted into power and, with that, all personal information fell into his hands and his new National Socialist Party. At a special meeting June 20, it was decided to enter into an agreement, becoming effective July 1, with Red Deer Memorial Hospital. Rates were set at $3 for single persons and $4.50 for married persons for the balance of the year. The rate for 1946 will be $6 and $8. ♦ ♦ ♦ Marking their 12th anniversary with the addition of three new supercoaches, Sorensen Bus Lines reach a new milestone in service to the travelling public of Alberta. Guns are not the issue

Continued from page 4 Having all those records at his disposal made taking firearms from those whom Hitler deemed a threat to his agenda easy. That was the tyranny and oppression that so many of our freedom-loving soldiers fought against and lost their lives over. I want to honour their sacrifice. We are, now, soldiers on the battlefield of ideas, laying the foundation for our future generations. We are currently a country of benevolent people, in general, led by a benevolent prime minister who has been opposed to long-gun registration; however, we do not know what type of regime will govern us 50 or 100 years from now. If Mr. Mclean gets his way, we will most certainly be laying groundwork that has the potential to oppress and enslave us and our posterity. Mclean is unwisely suggesting we allow tragedy to trump our God-given natural rights. Mclean’s suggestion that “we need to move away from a society where we think in first person singular,” and his opinion that “there is no reason for anyone in Canada outside of the military, law enforcement, or security to have a side arm,” sound more like the ideology our forefathers were fighting against 70 years ago. Mclean is boldly suggesting we embrace collectivism, which is reminiscent of Socialism, Fascism, and Communism. Individualism was a unique idea conceived by the American Founders that shed the light of absolute freedom for the first time in the world’s history. Mclean also adds, “A large clipped rifle is not a hunting weapon used for filling the family freezer. It is for the purpose of killing people.” Actually it is used for both, and I am not ashamed to say that when a criminal breaks into my house threatening me and my children, I want my gun to kill my attacker! Who walks into a den of lions? Now, if those lion’s mouths are muzzled and their paws are declawed, the threat is removed. When our guns are taken from us or regulated so heavily that they are rendered ineffective or unaffordable, what government does not recognize the obvious power they possess

over their unarmed citizenry — what criminal does not see the obvious vulnerability of their victim? What do we have to equalize the situation and give us a fighting chance? When our ability and right to defend ourselves is taken from us, our human dignity is taken from us — at the very least. I am surprised with Mclean having been demoted from ‘privileged member of the R.C.M.P.’ to ‘ordinary citizen’ not seeing the flaw in his logic. What was once his privilege to protect himself in the battlefield of drugs and violent crime, has been stripped from him. Where once in a crisis he reached for his gun, now he must reach for a phone. Tell me he sleeps better at night knowing he has his phone and that the police will respond within 10 or so minutes after he has completed the call — if he was able to reach the phone or if he didn’t misdial. Personally, I prefer hiding quietly around the corner with a loaded gun, over whispering loudly to a phone operator. Mclean says “target practice is fun, but so is riding a bike or bowling. Get over it.” So, perhaps he won’t have a problem defending his home and family with a bike helmet or bowling ball. Frankly, firearms were a blessing to me and my family. We were desperately poor and my father was able to sustain a family of eleven by hunting and trapping wild game. Also, my dad’s life was spared thanks to his .22 shotgun and the gun his partner was holding. When an angry black bear attacked him in our back yard, it required all of their combined ammunition to finally stop the bear in its tracks. Statistically, higher gun ownership results in fewer violent crimes. Such is the case in Kennesaw, Georgia, where it is law that each householder own at least one firearm. The resulting statistics show that crime against people in that city dropped 74 per cent compared to the previous year and fell another 45 per cent the following year while the city continues to grow. The reverse is seen when we look at the 1996 Dunblane Massacre? In the

aftermath of the tragedy, Great Britain instituted a handgun ban in an attempt to protect the public. Immediately after the ban, crimes soared 300 per cent. Anyway, it isn’t really about the weapon so much as the person who decides to pick it up — after all it was a ten year-old boy who took a match to his Chicago school house in 1958, killing the 95 children and nuns trapped inside. In 1927, a man used dynamite to blow up a school in Michigan, killing 44 and injuring 58. Islamic terrorists used planes and box-cutters to kill 3,000 people. There were no guns involved in the Rwandan genocide. So, this is really a matter of the moral state of society and what drives a person to kill another human being. In the case of the mass-killings in California, Columbine, Newtown, and Norway the murderers were reportedly heavy into violent video games. Elliot Roger confessed in his manifesto that a piece of him died when he played violent video games and that he couldn’t feel any more. The two killers from the Columbine massacre were obsessed with Doom. On the news, we heard

that the Newtown killer got his motivation from violent video games. A year before the Norwegian killer struck, he was often playing Call of Duty and World of Warcraft up to sixteen hours per day. We do not need to ban video games; we just need to educate ourselves on their effects on our children. I do not believe the government can fix our problem. I believe we, as individuals, wield that power. I believe we would do ourselves a huge favour by putting down the violent video games and the mind-numbing stimulants and, instead, do something kind for our neighbour. I believe the solution is a return to our Christian-Judeo roots which taught us to love God and each other … not to covet, steal, lie, bear false witness against our neighbour, or murder. You don’t even have to believe in God to adhere to those principles; and, if we truly want to honour our forefather’s sacrifice, let’s remain vigilant for the same cause. Nadine White, Sylvan Lake

New look for counties’ websites BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Websites of two Central Alberta counties recently received fresh, modern new looks. Ease of access to information is the focus of Red Deer County’s new website.

“Although the previous version of our municipal website served the organization well, the new rdcounty.ca will be a big step forward in keeping our residents informed,” said county manager Curtis Herzberg in a media release. “There are several new tools that residents will be able to access. Each of these tools is aimed at making information accurate and easy to find.” Features added to the new site include an enlarged search box, mobile compatibility, a scrolling news bar and menus containing frequently accessed subject

matter. The website has received more than 85,000 visits over the last year, according to the county. Visitors were seeking information on everything from county programs to council information. As well as the addition of new practical features, it’s also undergone significant aesthetic changes. Large font and the integration of screen reading technology formatting make it easily usable for the visually impaired. Lacombe County communications co-ordinator Lantry Vaughan described

changes to that county’s website as “more of a software upgrade than an actual redesign”. “It’s kind of like a new version of Windows: It’s kind of the same, but it’s kind of different,” he said. New hosting means administrators will benefit from enhanced tech support, he added. The counties’ respective websites can be viewed by visiting www.rdcounty.ca and www.lacombecounty.com.

Four temporary classrooms approved for Blakely School BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

During their regular meeting May 20, members of Sylvan Lake’s Municipal Planning Commission: • approved a development permit to allow

Chinook’s Edge School Division to locate four new prefabricated classrooms and one moved-in prefabricated washroom facility at C. P. Blakely School for a maximum of a four year period. The buildings are to be placed to the rear of the school abutting the playground.

Discharging Your Sump Pump into the Sanitary Sewage System is Unlawful, and Harmful to Community Resources. Home owners are reminded that sump pumps must discharge onto their own private property, and that discharge must be a minimum of 1 meter from the home’s foundation. Additionally, in cooler months, home-owners are responsible for ice that may build up on sidewalks as a result of sump pump discharge.

• passed a motion recommending town council approve a development permit for Sylvan Bay Resort Inc. to build a 124 person second storey open-air sundeck addition and an accessory building at the water slide property. Among conditions were that hours of operation of the second storey patio be the same as Wild Rapids Waterslide facility (12-8 p.m. daily, weather permitting). This property is in the Lakeshore Direct Control District meaning town council is the final approving authority.

• passed a motion recommending town council approve a demolition permit for a cottage at 4414 50A Avenue to make way for plans for intensification of the area. The property is one of three side by side on which three bedroom row houses with one bedroom basement suites are planned. Each lot would also include a detached garage in the rear with two bedroom garage suite above. Council is the final approving authority since this property is in the Waterfront Direct Control District of the Land Use Bylaw.

Fantasy genre books, TV series likely the source of baby names in 2013; 5,980 different names for boys; 7,191 distinct names for girls SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Liam held on as the top baby name for boys, but Olivia edged out Emma for girls in the third straight record year for births in Alberta. Alberta parents welcomed 53,090 babies — 25,789 girls and 27,301 boys — in 2013, ahead of 2012’s total of 52,439, and 2011’s tally of 50,844. Names chosen in 2013 suggest Albertans like fantasy genre books and TV series, with several monikers from George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones franchise given to Alberta children. For

girls, Arya, Brienne, Catelyn, Daenarys, Osha, Sansa, and Talisa made the list; while Tyrion, Theon, Robb, Martell, Jory, and Rayder appeared for boys. For the second year running The Hunger Games trilogy may have provided inspiration for babies named Peeta, Cato, Rue, Primrose, Seneca, and Gale. Some parents took inspiration from J.R.R. Tolkien, naming their boys Rohan and Thorin and girls Arwen. The Harry Potter series was also represented with Hermione, Ginny and Draco. The science fiction and fantasy genre may also have credit for other names including Inara, from Joss Whedon’s Firefly; Lyra, of Philip Pullman’s

I READ THE

Golden Compass trilogy; and Aslan, courtesy of C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia. Greek mythology also appeared to have an influence on Albertans who welcomed babies last year. Aries, Atlas, Orion, Midas, and Adonis made the list for boys. Athena, Artemis, Pandora, Hera, and Persephone were chosen for girls. Several baby girls were named after precious stones including Diamond, Amethyst, Emerald, Opal, and Sapphire. While for boys, parents were inspired by brand names: Stetson, Oakley, Dyson, Kindle, Tesla, and Wrangler. A number of interesting compound names also appeared on this year’s list: Heavendip, Goodluck, Godbless, and Thunderheart for boys; and Godwill and Violetrose for girls. Some of the more stand-out names

for boys include Urban, Sir, Canyon, Hurricane, Logic, One, Alias, and Jixxr. While for girls, these creative monikers made the list: Eunique, Conshens, Barbie, Diva, Tempest, Siri, Arrow, Glamour, and Lava. Albertans who are trying to choose the perfect name for their little bundles of joy can download the free Alberta Baby Names app for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The app has more than 95,000 Alberta baby names and their popularity going back to 1980. The Vital Statistics branch of Service Alberta recorded 5,980 distinct boy names and 7,191 distinct girl names in 2013. The figures are based on reports to date from hospitals and birthing centres. Final numbers and a complete list of names will be available once all the information is collected and compiled later this year.

Conservation Partners going strong heading into second year

HOMECOMING

By Jim Rilling Associate Pastor at Sylvan Lake Alliance Community Church

“Welcome home” is all she said. Her words and the tone of her voice immediately let me know everything was going to be all right. I was where I belonged. I was home. One of the greatest home coming stories we have is the one about the Prodigal. After squandering his wealth with wild living he ends up feeding pigs and longing to eat with them just to survive. Fortunately he came to his senses and said, I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants. (Luke 15:18,19) While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed

him. To top it all off his father threw one of the biggest parties ever to welcome his son home. What a wonderful picture of our gracious heavenly Father. When we genuinely turn from our sin and return to Him, he gladly welcomes us home. He invites you to be at home with him today. For example Jesus says: “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give your rest” (Matt. 11:28). And regarding the future He says: “I am going to prepare a place for you, so that you may be with me forever” (John 14:3). Don’t you think it is time to “come home”?

BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

One year after it was introduced, Red Deer County’s Conservation Partners program is going strong. Created as a way of connecting donors with landowners and their environmentally-beneficial projects, it’s continuing to pick up steam as it heads into its second year. “This year, we’ve already had $60,000 for projects,” said conservation co-ordinator Ken Lewis. “We got a grant from Alberta Conservation Association for $30,000, and our county council approved us for $30,000.”

“For the most part, it’s benefitting wetlands, rivers, creeks, groundwater and riparian areas,” Ken Lewis

All of that funding has already been allocated, he added, such is the program’s popularity among environmentally-conscious county landowners. Eligible landowners must be situated within the county with projects that in some way benefit the environment. “For the most part, it’s benefitting wetlands, rivers, creeks, groundwater and riparian areas,” said Lewis. “As long as you can show that, or we can see that, then that makes it eligible.” With the groundwork season now underway, the county is beginning to approach potential donors to solicit funding for the many landowners who have expressed an interest in participating. If there isn’t enough funding to meet the program’s high demand, projects will be put on a waiting list until more money becomes available. “Probably our greatest challenge (has been) finding donors,” said Lewis. “Part of that is that this is a new thing for us.” To that end, increased efforts will be made to market the program to potential donors, with businesses and service groups among the first to be approached. The county is also making use of online resources such as social media and its website to provide information on the program. “We’ll be reaching out to (potential donors) through that,” said Lewis. Examples of projects that have been a part of the program include portable livestock shelters, tree planting and off-stream livestock watering systems. As well as improving the environment, the program also aims to give recognition to landowners that do their part, Lewis said. “(It’s about) getting more great projects out on the land, and acknowledging all the stuff that landowners do for the environment. If we can help them do even more with this program, that’s great.” Both landowners and donors are being sought to participate in the program. They’re able to do so by phoning Lewis at 403-505-9038. Those who aren’t eligible for Conservation Partners funding may be directed to other more applicable programs. The county also launched its Green Acreages initiative last month. Lewis described that program as being similar to Conservation Partners, but specifically for acreage owners. In it, participants undergo a self-assessment process, with help from a conservation assistant, before identifying risks and issues they wish to address. They can then apply for funding to help cover associated costs.

Plans for annexation moving forward BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

During their regular meeting May 26, Sylvan Lake councillors: • directed staff to formally notify Red Deer County of the town’s intention to proceed with an annexation proposal to acquire land for residential, commercial and industrial growth. The Sylvan Lake-Red Deer County Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) outlines that an annexation application be submitted by the town by October 2014. The process commenced in 2012 but is still in preliminary stages. In February council established the area the town is interested in annexing on the east and west sides of current boundaries. The IDP committee, which includes representatives from both municipalities, held a meeting May 9 and “agreed to the proposed annexation area and anticipated process for moving forward”,

Local input made priority in beach enhancement project BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake town councillors have decided against spending up to $25,000 to engage input from Albertans in the town’s beach enhancement project. They approved a motion Monday night to instead hire an outside consultant to gauge local interest in the project at a cost of no more than $15,000. Councillors questioned the $25,000 earmarked for a provincial public engagement plan, and felt it would be beneficial to obtain local input first. Public consultation is made mandatory by Alberta Parks, which holds the authority to either approve or deny project applications. Potential enhancements include creating a sand beach area either above or below the seawall. Removing grass and in-water dredging along the lakefront are options, although the latter is unlikely, based on the outcome of previous meetings held between Alberta Parks and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

according to a report prepared by planner Kim Devlin. • approved a development permit for a second storey open-air sundeck and an accessory building at the Wild Rapid Waterslides property. Among conditions of the approval are that hours of operation of the patio are to be limited to that of the waterslides (12-8 pm daily, weather permitting). It will seat up to 124 people. • approved a motion from Councillor Matt Prete directing staff to research other municipalities using a system for protection of mature trees and present a plan to council for implementing that in the Municipal Development Plan. He wants to have something in place so they can make sure they

have a plan for mature trees on lots that come up for redevelopment. “What I appreciate about the intent is to create a tree plan, not to say you can’t cut down trees, but there is a plan in place,” said Councillor Chris Lust. • awarded a contract to Banister Research & Consulting Inc., in the amount of $29,825 plus GST, for the “Tourism Economic Impact Assessment Project, Survey of Visitors to Sylvan Lake, Summer 2014”. The economic impact assessment was identified as one of the first initiatives in the corporate tourism strategy and implementation plan completed in 2013, reported Vicki Kurz, the town’s economic development officer.

Since the building was opened in May 2012 there has been periodic water leakage “especially during wind-drive rain events from the east direction”, wrote David Yee, project manager, in his report to council. The deficiency was identified and a holdback on the contract was retained. The general contractor is reportedly no longer active, so money from the holdback will be used to correct the problem. New curling, ice surfaces to be joined with existing rec. facilities BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Plans were unveiled and fundraising success celebrated during the NexSource Centre Reveal Party at Railway Park Promenade, last Wednesday. The committee raising money for Sylvan Lake’s newest recreational complex, announced over 60 per cent of the target $2 million goal already raised through various corporate and personal donations. The overall project is estimated to cost between $20 and $25 million with about $13-18 million borrowed. Another $4 million will come from a recreation levy on property tax bills, Money collected through that has been building for several years. The town also projects using funds from other levels of government and adjacent municipalities. Preliminary plans for the new NexSource Centre were unveiled during a community barbecue near the site of the enhanced recreational complex. Included are a five sheet curling rink, an additional ice surface with running track above, senior citizens centre and connections to the current multiplex and aquatic centre. The proposal will require closure of part of 48th Street between 48 and 49 Avenues.

ELECTORAL DIVISION INNISFAIL-SYLVAN LAKE

“There are really exciting opportunities in this project” Amy Kormarniski, co-chair of the fundraising committee

The ‘reveal’ was the first look the public had of the project which includes a five sheet curling rink, new ice facility, running track, senior citizens’ centre, connections between the existing multiplex and aquatic centre with the new buildings and much more. It will require closure of part of 48th Street. The concepts presented were the result of an intensive three day charette process led by CEI Architecture in late May with stakeholders, town staff and councillors. Mark Hentze, of CEI, explained the seniors’ space has the ability to host 400-450 people in a seated event. There are a series of multipurpose rooms, an indoor playspace area, an area for 350400 people in banquet style, a lounge area that will connect between the multiplex and curling rink and a walking or jogging track on a second floor around the new ice surface. He talked about “proper public presence of the architecture so it looks important”. Lots of windows and translucency are included. There are “prominent, obvious entries to the building”. The colour palette has been selected with “sensibility to what the town is trying to do on the lakefront”. Amy Kormarniski, co-chair of the fundraising committee, said “Sylvan Lake has been waiting for a true and central gathering place to congregate and celebrate … This community facility will serve Sylvan Lakers for generations to come.” Snow from the collapse of the roof on the old arena “had hardly settled”, she said, before presenting sponsor NexSource stepped up with a $500,000 sponsorship for naming rights on the new facility. Other business and community members were quick to follow. Now the committee “would appreciate the help of business owners and community members in connecting with other business and community members” to spur their fundraising efforts. “There are really exciting opportunities in this project,” she concluded, after announcing their progress towards the $2 million fundraising goal.

First book release fulfilling for Kimball BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

In the works for the past year-and-a-half, a book of fiction by Sunbreaker Cove-based writer Brenda Kimball was published recently, fulfilling a goal she’s had since taking a writing course about eight years ago. Lost Memories, published earlier this year by Xlibris, follows the story of a girl determined to find out the truth about a family member lost several years prior, and the fallout of her investigative pursuits. Kimball began writing it while she was working full-time. After retiring almost two years ago, she found herself with more time to write, and eventually completed and published her work. “I always wanted to write, but when you’re working full time and have things, life gets in the way, and you just really don’t have time,” she said. Having more time allowed her to edit and reedit her work, adding and removing things along the way. It’s an experience she enjoyed so much, she’s already begun writing a follow-up. Part of her immersion into the book’s subject matter — based on a 20-year-old murder — comes from her own experience with violence, which she feels is something almost everyone can relate to.

“Everybody is affected by violence, no matter what your gender or age,” she said. “Years ago, when I was growing up, I had a nephew that succumbed to violence, and (Lost Memories) is not really based around him, but it’s the idea that violence can affect everybody.” Kimball began writing the book as a hobby, with no intentions of publishing it. Not even members of her family knew she was writing it. A positive critique from a friend, however, prompted a change of heart. “I thought, if this is as far as it goes, that’s fine,” she said. “You always think your work is not good enough, and I think that was my biggest challenge.” With already more than 100 copies sold, her initial doubts have been overcome. And with the book’s availability online and in stores, there’s a chance that number could grow even further. “If it goes further, then that’s great,” she said. “I’m happy with what I’ve done, and where it’s gone so far.” More information about Kimball and the book is available online at www.lostmemorieskimball.com.

Brenda Kimball recently published her first book, Lost Memories. Lost Memories by Brenda Kimball; now available online and in stores. SUBMITTED

Poverty, lifelong slavery designed into economic system Dear Editor, I read your comments in regards to the sale of electrical transmission lines a few weeks back and I had a chance to Google whatever information was available. Every man woman and child in Alberta will loose $1,000 each on this deal. For me that’s $5,000 and we will all have to pay the owners a return of nine per cent. People always wonder where poverty comes from and why — it’s designed into the economic system to ensure lifelong slavery. Will the people of Alberta ever be able to escape paying higher electricity to live? No. Where else can you get power? If the private sector owns your basic needs of survival you will have no options. That’s why we built government — to protect our basic needs. If you look at the poorest countries you will find basic services are privately owned. Airports, power companies, water, roads, all privately owned

in the poorest countries. Ontario is destroyed by high electrical rates. They took apart Ontario Hydro and allowed deregulation. Alberta has the highest electrical rates with the lowest costs. The greatest profits for private owners. When I turn on my welder its costing me $40 an hour in electricity, I can’t escape that without changing my electrical supply. The existing government is betraying the people. This should be closely examined and I thank this newspaper for being an independent source of vital information. More from the 1913 Days Parade

The day was perfect June 14 for residents of Sylvan Lake Lodge and Bethany Sylvan Lake to sit outside on the lawn and watch the parade.

Some of Sylvan Lake’s Cubs and Scouts walked the parade route.

The Arashi Do Martial Arts float captured third place in the best commercial float category. A group of students walked ahead of the float as well, demonstrating their skills.

Sidewalks were crowded with people who enjoyed the variety of the 1913 Days parade. STEVE DILLS PHOTOS

Sylvan Toastmaster acknowledged for flood recovery efforts BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A member of Sylvan Lake’s Toastmasters Club has been recognized for his efforts in last year’s flood recovery in High River and Calgary, recently receiving the province’s Hero of the Flood

Award. Dr. Dave Cartledge, a Red Deer-based veterinarian and member of Sylvan’s Slick Speakers Toastmasters, said he wasn’t expecting the award, but was honoured to receive it, nonetheless. “I didn’t volunteer for the award, I volunteered because people needed help,”

he said. “I just received it in the mail; it was a complete surprise.” Cartledge initially planned to help friends in High River affected by the flooding, but ended up helping anyone he possibly could. His efforts saw him travel between Calgary and High River over two week-

ends, providing help wherever it was needed. He cleared mud and water out of yards, garages and homes, and removed damaged furniture and household appliances. “There was a lot of mud, and we had masks to keep on our faces, because all the water was contaminated,” he said. “They were hot days, and we were down in the basement the first day I was in High River. It was sunny, so we had small windows to let the sunlight through so we could see what we were doing, but when the clouds came over, we couldn’t see a thing. “Somebody showed up with a couple of headlamps, so then we got back to work.” Cartledge decided to take action after fellow Toastmasters told him stories of the devastation caused by the flood. Through contact with Calgary members of the communication- and leadership-focused club, he learned where his efforts would be best directed. Upon arriving, he joined forces with droves of other volunteers eager to help. He now hopes his own story will encourage others to consider volunteer work. “You don’t do things for awards,” he said. “You just do things to help other people.”

Solid weekend for Sylvan duo at Edmonton beach volleyball tournament SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Erin Matthews and Morgan Lockyer played their second Alberta Beach Volleyball tournament at the John Fry Park in Edmonton Saturday. There were teams from all over Alberta in different age groups — U14, U16 and U18 — and both boys and girls. Matthews and Lockyer played in the U16 age group as first-years of this age group. The day started early with a 7:30 a.m. check-in, and the wind howling at 50 km/hr. Serves into the wind stopped mid-air before hitting the net, and if you were hitting with the wind you had to adapt your serve so it wouldn’t fly out the back of the court. Lucky for Matthews and Lockyer, there were five matches to watch before they played their first game, so they had time to figure out the wind strategies. The wind never let up the whole day proving to be a challenge for all the players in the tournament. Matthews started the day serving first and got three aces. The other team had the ball for only one serve as Matthews received the serve passing to Lockyer and then Lockyer made a perfect pass back to Matthews, who placed it just right to score a point and get the ball back. Lockyer served next doing the same as Matthews and scored three aces. The girls were just beaming at this point as they had a fantastic start to the day. They won this game 25-12, lost the next one 25-20, then won the last roundrobin game 25-15. Heading into the playoffs, the girls won their first game 25-10. The next game they played was against second-year girls who were 16, which they lost 25-9. They both had a couple of really good digs trying to hang on, but were just out-skilled in this match. Overall the girls had an incredible day, winning four of six games, and finishing the tournament in sixth-place out of 36 teams. Great job! Good luck to all the Sylvan players in the next tournament July 5 and 6, held right here in Sylvan Lake down at Sylvan Lake’s Erin Matthews and Morgan Lockyer fared well at a beach volleyball tournament in Edmonton over the the pier on the beach volleyball courts. SUBMITTED weekend.

Albertans urged to wrangle their worms this summer: UAlberta research team

SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A University of Alberta research team has some simple advice for Albertans bound for the lake, campground or remote areas this summer: wrangle your worms. Researchers from the U of A’s faculties of science and education have teamed up to create the Alberta Worm Invasion Tracker, an online resource and mobile app that allows the public to record worm locations as they’re discovered. The citizen science project is part of a Storage Space

larger collaboration to learn about the impact that earthworms — an invasive species in Alberta — have on the environment and their distribution patterns across the province. “In agriculture and gardens, worms are obviously quite useful because they mix up the soil and increase aeration, but in forests in most of Canada and the northern United States, they’re an invasive species, said biologist Erin Cameron, a U of A alumna who started studying earthworm populations as a graduate student under the supervision of Erin Bayne.

wrangle their worms and log worm encounters — the first in what the U of A team hopes are many successful partnerships that build a bridge between scientists, educators, students and the general public. “This issue of invasive species gets at so many ecological concepts, this provides really good context for teachers to be engaged in the project and address some of those concepts in their curriculum, says Jerine Pegg, an assistant professor of elementary education with a strong interest in scientist-teacher partnerships.
