For a Rimbey family who moved here from Cuba last June, Canada Day and the freedom and pride the celebration implies, has special and meaningful significance. After living, working and playing in Rimbey for more than a year, Madelin Sardina, Alex Suarez and their daughter Melissa are more than happy to call this community home and Canada their country of choice. “It has been wonderful,” said Sardina. “Awesome.” She and her husband moved to Rimbey as Suarez began working as chef of Henry’s, the restaurant at Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel. Suarez has several years experience as a professional chef, working in large hotels and resorts in Cuba. Now, he is able to bring his expertise to Rimbey, and, although he is used to working in much larger establishments, he finds the kitchen at Henry’s to have the latest up-to-date equipment and a pleasure to work in. Sardina, who worked in the tourist industry in Cuba, said she and her husband were in Canada visiting a couple of years ago and loved it. Through the help of Canadian friends they were able to secure employment. Continued on page 6

What I cannot understand is why Wildrose members would consider voting for inexperienced challengers without Mr. Anglin’s credentials. I’d urge all members of the Wildrose Party to watch out for upcoming polls to elect the fu-
ture Wildrose candidate in the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre constituency. Given Mr. Anglin’s dedication, tenacity and experience I’d suggest he should be the obvious choice for re-election. Iain Aitken, Rimbey

The stuff that reunions and families are made of I saw the new baby last week. I held his sweet little self in my arms, inhaled his brown sugar baby smell and gazed at the world reflected in his innocent blue eyes. I held the child close to me as I sat in the rocking chair in the cheerful nursery. And as I rocked, the sun played peek-a-boo with the wall hanging that says, ‘I’ll love you to the moon and back’, and his two older brothers played at my feet. The two-year-old watched me closely, finally pulling his thumb out of his mouth long enough to tell me proudly, “that’s my new brother.” The five-year-old took great pains to explain to me that the baby Treena Mielke who is now two-monthsOn The Other Side old has many talents. “He can roll over, he can kick really well, he can wave his arms and he can smile already,” he said, puffing out his little chest with pride. I rock the baby slowly, and with every creak of the rocking chair, I feel my hurry up deadline driven world slow down. I rock slowly, comfortably, steadily. The children play and the baby slowly closes his eyes. And time, as I knew it, stood still. As I rock I let my mind drift out of the nursery and to summer and the red-circled days of summer. Reunions! Summer reunions! And I think about the people who attend these reunions. A long, long time ago, they were all young,
just as these three boys are now. Somebody’s brother. Somebody’s sister. Playing together. Bonding. Feeling that family pride that is born somewhere inside like a tiny flame and lives on forever. It starts here, I think. This pride thing. It is the invisible thread that binds reunion goers together. It is the excited feeling behind the name tag, the sparkle in the eyes hidden behind the progressive lenses, the laughter that bubbles up out of nowhere; laughter that spans the barriers of bridges long since burned and time and distance. They come to these reunions from every walk of life and they come from all over. Farmers. Accountants. Teachers. Nurses and doctors. Ranchers and lawyers. Grandmas and grandpas. Great grandpas and grandmas. They converge at halls and Legions and other venues wearing nametags and smiles and hope. They want to remember. They want to go back. I watch my grandsons play quietly in the pool of sunlight on the floor. Once, each and every one of
these nametag-bearing seniors was young like this. Once, a long time ago, they were somebody’s kid, somebody brother, somebody’s sister. Once they ate their lunch out of a tin lunch pail, suffered the indignities of the strap, learned long division, struggled through exams and failure, experienced their first kiss and their first heartbreak. And then, one day, they moved on. Now they have come back. I got to take a walk down memory lane with a few old timers’ from Rimbey the other day at their reunion and as I talked and mixed and mingled with them all it was like the clock in the hall spun backwards for several decades and they were all young again. “This is my sister,” a grey haired lady with a sweet smile told me, as she introduced me to the woman sitting beside her. “She’s 91.” And the pride in her voice was not dimmed by time or age or separation, but like my grandsons, it was strong. It was, in fact, unmistakable.

Stop making the outdoors seem like a scary place for children David Suzuki Troy Media Ontario’s Healthy Kids Panel recently proposed a strategy to help kids get onto a path to health. The problem is that the path doesn’t lead them into nature. Though the report quotes parents’ comments and research showing kids spend dramatically less time outside than ever, it doesn’t encourage time in nature. That said, many of the report’s recommendations should be implemented and supported locally, provincially and nationally to reduce the risks of obesity. Encouraging parents and children to be more critical about dietary choices and requiring more information and labelling from restaurants and food producers is long overdue. Ontario isn’t the only province working to reduce obesity rates and support parents raising healthy children, particularly in the early years. Alberta released relevant reports in 2011 and Quebec has had a ban on advertising junk food to children since 1980. No one can argue against public awareness and education around the benefits of healthy eating and active living. But a provincial, patchwork ap-
proach to addressing these issues isn’t enough. We need a national strategy to get our kids eating healthy foods and being active in nature. Although it seems logical that much of the time spent being active will take place outside, the Ontario report acknowledges that ‘many communities are not designed to encourage kids to move or be physically active . . . and have few safe green spaces.’ One parent in a focus group explains that the parks in his community are either gated or locked up once school is closed. So, even when there is green space, it’s not always accessible. Last year, the David Suzuki Foundation conducted a survey with young Canadians and found that 70 per cent spend an hour or less a day outdoors. The 2012 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card says they spend almost eight hours a day in front of screens. So it’s not that kids don’t have time to be outside. It’s just not part of their lifestyle. Much has been reported about a recommendation by the Ontario panel to ban junk food advertising that targets children under 12. This has worked in Quebec and is being discussed in Alberta. But the approach
has invited criticism from those who argue that people should have the right to choose. It’s always tempting to focus on making bad things less accessible, but perhaps policy-makers should be more creative and focus on ways to make good things more accessible. Being in nature is good for all of us. People who get outside regularly are less stressed, have more resilient immune systems and are generally happier. And it’s good for our kids. Studies show spending time in nature or green spaces helps reduce the symptoms of ADHD. Even in built playgrounds, kids spend twice as much time playing, use their imaginations more and engage in more aerobic and strengthening activities when the space incorporates natural elements like logs, flowers and small streams, according to research from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Despite all the obvious health benefits of spending time outside, provincial and federal governments are failing to integrate a daily dose of nature into their policies. It’s also something we as a society are failing to make a priority in the lives of our children. This inexpensive and effective way to make our lives healthier and happier
should be an obvious solution. We need to make sure our neighbourhoods have green spaces where people can explore their connections with nature. We need to ask teachers and school board representatives to take students outside so that nature becomes a classroom. And we need to stop making the outdoors seem like a scary place for children by helping parents understand that the benefits of playing outside outweigh the risks. It will take public education and awareness-building as well as changes to the way we build cities and live in our communities to bring nature back into our lives. Connecting kids to nature every day needs to be a priority policy objective in any strategy for healthy children and could easily have been integrated into the recommendations from the Ontario Healthy Kids Panel. Taking our kids by the hand and spending time outside with them will have the added benefit of making us healthier and happier adults. Continued from page 1 “We saw that there were many opportunities and we wanted to come here, but it took more than a year to make it all happen. It was worth it, though. There is much more opportunity here and we have received such a warm welcome. Everyone is so friendly and nice.” The family has embraced the Canadian lifestyle wholeheartedly, even surviving the brutal winter with no complaints. While most Rimbey residents, as many other Albertans, shivered and shook their way through another incredibly long and cold winter, Sardina and her husband Alex and their daughter delighted in the wonder of snow. “It was wonderful, we had never seen snow before,” said Sardina, adding it gave her the same feeling of awe as seeing the ocean. “It was beautiful,” her husband agreed. “We jumped in the snow,” he said with a laugh.

While the couple agreed the winter was long and cold, they were definitely more focused on how delightful the snow was and the fact their daughter was learning to skate. Christmas was another high point of the winter for them, and a visit from Santa was exciting and fun. “We never had Christmas before,” they said. Buying a car, getting his driver’s license and getting behind the wheel, even facing the daunting task of driving in Edmonton has been a challenge for Alex, but one that he has met with determination and pride. “It’s a new life here,” he said. “Everything is new.” Since moving to Rimbey, the couple has been joined by other families from Cuba including Odofvany Rodriguez and Yunia Garcia and Yoel Sosa and Jacqueline Coz, all of whom are employed at the Best Western. Sardina is pleased to bring a Cuban touch to Henry’s, noting Cuban night has become so popular reservations are sometimes needed. Now that Sardina and Suarez have spent a year in Canada, they have made another choice. They want to be permanent residents. The couple has both passed the first exam towards becoming Canadian citizens and is more than willing to complete all the necessary paperwork to make their stay official. “We hope to live here forever,” said Sardina. “We love our country, but there many things are not allowed. We will visit there and we want our family to visit us. Here we live better.” “It’s a new life,” added Suaraz.

Nixon challenges Anglin Continued from page 1 Since Nixon’s announcement MLA Joe Anglin fought to have him disqualified, but his allegations were not supported. Anglin alleged that Nixon did not step down from the presidency of the constituency association prior to filing his application and that he remained president until June 16. In a press release, Wildrose president David Yager said the allegations made by Anglin were investigated and both Anglin and Nixon were given the opportunity to make submissions in writing to the Provincial Candidate Selection Committee. “The PCSC reviewed the full record, found that the evidence did not support the allegations made by Mr. Anglin and ruled that Mr. Nixon’s application should be accepted,’ he said. Anglin unsuccessfully appealed that ruling to a separate appeal committee. “Two separate bodies have reviewed Mr. Anglin’s allegations against Mr. Nixon. Both found that the evidence did not support the allegations. Both ruled that Mr. Nixon’s application was compliant and should be accepted,” said. The grassroots members of the local constituency nomination committee in Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre also ruled they have no concerns with Nixon’s candidacy. “Wildrose favours open, contested nominations. We will not alter our democratic, grassroots nomination process to favour a particular person or outcome,” he said.
In an email, Anglin defended his position. “I am the strongest advocate for the protection of water and the environment in the WRP caucus. I’m currently leading the Wildrose Party’s effort to create a policy with regard to water use and fracing. Hopefully my constituents want me to continue this work,” he said. “Since I have been elected, of the 87 MLAs representing all parties in the legislature, no one has logged more hours under the dome advocating for their constituents than I have. That’s my record, and I will run on it.” Since Nixon announced his candidacy he received signatures of support from nearly half of the 800 constituency association members. “I turned in just shy of 400 signatures,” he said. “We’ve been going at it really steady and it’s exciting,” he added. Nixon said he is confident he broke no rules in letting his name stand in the election and is focusing on his job as a candidate. “I have no personal friends on the executive of the party. I haven’t even met any of them face to face.” He added he decided to run as he is concerned the Wildrose Party might lose the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding to the Tories. “There’s a strong possibility the Tories could claim this seat. “The feedback I have heard is that people want an MLA who is active, visible and focused on relevant issues. They want an MLA who can work with all levels of government to solve issues that matter.”

There is a Wildrose Party nomination race underway and I am being challenged because my opponent and his supporters claim I do not advocate enough for my constituents. Among the many things I have done since being elected, I went right to work on securing Sundre money for ¾ood mitigation and I have been working tirelessly ever since in this endeavour. We now have some funds secured! Once elected, I continued working to obtain funding for the New Senior’s Lodge in Rimbey, and I succeeded. I even got criticized for announcing it! I have worked tirelessly with Rocky Mountain House to go through the steps to get a new hospital. From helping Pharmacists get a better deal, and lobbying to keep pharmacies located in rural communities to calling out utility companies for gouging consumers, no one has logged more hours under the dome advocating for their constituents than me! When constituents call my of½ce with their own concerns, I get back to them by phone or set up appointments to meet to hear them. That’s my record, and I’m proud of it! When the time comes to vote, please ask yourself one simple question! When you need help against, or with this government, who would you rather have in the assembly? Choose the guy who has demonstrated he is not afraid to stand up! Re-nominate Joe Anglin WRP Sponsored by Joe Anglin MLA Rimbey – Rocky Mountain House - Sundre

Rimbey RCMP recover stolen property Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated over 100 files this reporting period. Highlights include copper wire thefts, mischief, missing persons, drugs, fraud, sexual assault, domestic assault and other serious matters. Copper wire theft Thieves stealing copper wire from oil lease sites hit the rural area northwest of Bluffton. In total, 11 sites were targeted by criminals in the Rimbey and Breton Detachment area. Investigators are following up on all leads at this time. Physical assault A woman in distress, being pursued by her common-law spouse, ran into the detachment seeking help after their heated argument led to her being physically as-
saulted. The 28-year-old man, a resident of Rimbey, was arrested and charged with assault. If you or a loved one is in need of assistance relating to domestic violence - there is help. Please contact the Rimbey and District Victim Services Unit at (403) 843-8494 before matters escalate. Arrests made Police arrested four individuals who were ‘wanted’. If you are on the run and tired of looking over your shoulder, you are welcome to come turn yourself in. There is no good time to get arrested. But, it is really not a good time when we catch you on the highway and now you’re stuck with a tow bill as well. A while ago, we warned a man to turn himself in and deal with his outstanding warrants for drug offences. He didn’t,

and was arrested at the Calgary International Airport on his way to the NFL Pro Bowl game in Hawaii. From what I understand, he didn’t even get to watch the game on TV from jail and his wife spent their beach holiday sipping Pina Coladas all by herself. Stolen property recovered An officer stopped a suspicious vehicle on Centerview Road. When the Mountie dug deeper into why the man was shaking like a leaf, he uncovered over $8,000 in stolen property in the vehicle. The accused, who is well known to police, was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property. Numerous weapons were seized in the vehicle as well. The stolen items linked back to a break and enter at a business in the Breton area that occurred four years ago.

The insurance company who had paid out the original property owner was very thankful to have the stolen property recovered by police. RCMP on lookout for thieves Unknown culprit(s) cut the lock off a storage shed behind a house in Rimbey. The bandit stole a pair of cross country skis and a weed eater. Police are currently investigating this crime. Charges laid Rimbey Mounties recovered a stolen car abandoned in town. The tenacious officer went to work trying to solve the mystery of how the car ended up in Rimbey from another jurisdiction. When the dust settled, Rimbey detachment laid over 15 criminal charges against four offenders from the Red Deer and Sylvan Lake area. One of the offenders was already in custody serving time for other matters. Police attended the offender’s new residence and served him with 10 more charges. Hopefully, he spreads the word in the ‘big house’ to not come to Rimbey if they plan on breaking the law. Safety encouraged Police will be out patrolling the waterways this summer. Always have the necessary life jackets, bailing bucket, sounding device, paddles and licenses on board before you leave the dock. Please ensure that while you are out enjoying Mother Nature that you are prepared for her worst in the event the weather changes without notice. Always let a friend or family member know where you are going and when you plan on returning from your outing. Every year police are called by concerned persons whose loved ones have not returned from a favourite fishing or hunting spot. In some cases, the only lead we have to work with is that they “went out west”. We know you all have a secret fishing spot...but don’t make it so secret that even your wife has no idea where it is.

This year the class of 1964 and students who attended Rimbey schools prior to that date were recognized. The Donnelly and VanHunbeck pioneer families were highlighted. Gladys Johnson, president of the Old-timers’’ Reunion committee said she was pleased with this year’s celebration. “It was a good time and the weather co-operated. Next year we will be celebrating 60 years and I think we should endeavor to make it even a little more special. We really have an excellent committee and I really appreciate their enthusiasm and co-operation. Betty Adamkewcz (nee Simpson), treasurer of the committee, said the reunion provided a wonderful way to meet up with old friends and classmates. “It was so interesting and so nice to talk to everyone and learn where they’ve been and what Joy Shields and Carol Jaffray share a laugh while on stage as the class they’ve been up to,” she said. of ’64 is recognized at the Old Timers’ Reunion. Old-timers’ reunion held Continued from Page 10 Their mother, Ruth Wiley was a schoolteacher in Rimbey for several years. Four of the six siblings followed in their mother’s footsteps and became teachers. While the sisters sat and chatted, many people came by and commented that their mom had been their teacher. “You look like your mom,” they told Leora, who, at 91 looked incredibly youthful with salt and pepper
curls and a lovely smile. Someone produced a picture of one of the classes at Rimbey elementary with the teacher and it was determined that teacher was, in fact, Ruth Wiley. Walter, who shared her sister’s youthful looks and friendly smile, enjoyed the walk down memory lane, as did many of her friends and classmates. She said she loved coming to the old-timers’’ reunion. “It is a great place to renew childhood memories.” she said.

Town council responds to questions from RRA By Treena Mielke Town council, peppered with questions by members of the Rimbey Ratepayers at its Monday meeting, continued to stand by its statements that all procedures followed are within the guidelines of the municipal government act. In a letter to council, Jim Moore questioned council about the committee of the whole meetings, which he said have been in-camera in the past. Mayor Rick Pankiw said committee of the whole meetings will be held in council chambers and are open to the public. “As a new council we have reached out to our consultants and municipal affairs for direction in this matter as we were not comfortable meeting as a
council on issues other than in-camera circumstances as prescribed by the MGA,” he said.
“The community needs to have a chance to know what’s going on” Jim Moore, RRA He said any committee of the whole meetings that were held in-camera previously were conducted in that manner on the advice of the town’s former administration. While Coun. Paul Payson did not confirm that committee of the whole meetings were in-camera

when the previous council was in place he said “there was never anybody there.” Moore also questioned an unprecedented use of secret ballots occurring during a vote in a recent regular council meeting. He also wanted to know what the protocol used for deciding not to have a council meeting held at the regular two week interval was. Holding three readings at the same meeting is another issue that needs to be explained, he said. Mayor Pankiw said council was adhering to the MGA in these issues, but Moore said council needed to be more up-front and not hide behind the legislation. “The community needs to have a chance to know what’s going on,” he said. “The MGA is specific in some things and vague in others. Common sense needs to prevail.” The sudden termination of Melis-
sa Beebe, the town’s acting CAO was also questioned. Florence Stemo said she couldn’t understand the justification behind the dismissal of such a dedicated, competent employee. “She only had six to eight weeks to go (before the new CAO came on board),” she said. “How much is this going to cost the taxpayers?” Moore questioned. Mayor Pankiw said council is bound to the confidentially statements in the termination agreement with Beebe and could not respond to questions. “We get elected to make decisions,” said Payson. “Tough decisions; but decisions that we think are best for the Town of Rimbey. “Town council wishes Melissa all the success in her new position as CAO for the Town of Caroline,” added Pankiw.

Kudos to MLA Anglin Dear Editor, I’m not a resident of your community, although I spent quite a bit of time in Rimbey during the AltaLink hearings and for town halls for landowners opposed to the land use bills that were being introduced back then - Bills 46, 19, 50, 36. But I am an Albertan and an interested political observer. I’ve watched Joe Anglin take his advocacy and work ethic from the fight for landowners and their property rights to his position as MLA for Rimbey-Rocky Mountain HouseSundre. Joe’s work in the legislature and his advocacy for his constituents - all from the opposition bench - is exceptional. His attendance in session, his articulate and wellresearched statements during debates, and his focus on relevant issues are something that is missing in many of our elected representatives. His intelligence, his integrity and his knowledge serve his constituents and all Albertans very well. Credit where credit is due. Thanks, Joe An-

He served two tours in Bosnia with the U.N., one in Afghanistan with Nato and was deployed in a humanitarian capacity with the Cdn. Hospital unit to Haiti following a recent earthquake in that country. He retired with the rank of Master Warrant Officer.
