Rainy weather and several game delays may have hurt the attendance numbers at the Grand Forks International (GFI) Baseball Tournament, but there was no disputing the great ball and the positive effect on the city of bringing in 12 teams and many fans from out of town. In the final game on Monday afternoon, Burnaby trailed Everett 5-4 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. However, a double by Tyler Yorko brought in Colby Rossi and James Zamko giving the bulldogs a come from behind 6-5 win for the championship. Burnaby picked up $20,000 for their efforts. For second place, Everett took home $12,000; rounding out the top four and taking home $5,000 each were Seattle and Thurston County. Everett advanced to the final by beating the Seattle Studs 4-2, while Burnaby moved on by defeating the Thurston County Senators 4-2. Head organizer Joan Thomas said the GFI ran fairly smoothly despite inclement weather and a last minute pull-out from one of the teams. “The baseball has been great—lots of really

Prof. Werner’s orchestra supplied the music for the whirly-whirls in the evening. 1924 This was one of the hottest weeks on record with temperatures ranging from 92 (32 C) to 109 (42 C) degrees farenheit. 1929 Waterford Reid, who was employed with the West Kootenay Power Co. at Bonnington, motored over and spent Dominion Day with his two sons, Emerson and Henry. 1934 The Alpine Inn at English Point on Christina Lake, which was opened a few weeks ago by Herbert Carvath of Victoria, was attracting many visitors, many coming from a distance. 1939 Mrs. Ralph Wolverton of Greenwood spent several days at Christina Lake and reported that the Kokanee fishing was good. She had caught 11 fish in an hour. 1944 The July 1 celebration held by the Grand Forks Volunteer Fire Department was one of the biggest, if not the biggest celebration ever held locally, with over 2,000 people attending.

1949 Tickets went on sale for the queen contest, to be held in conjunction with the annual Field Day on July 20. Farmers and residents were also being asked to paint and clean up houses and properties. 1954 Game warden Alex Sinclair reported that some ranchers of the west Boundary area had experienced losses from grizzly bear attacks on cows and calves. 1959 Tony Lodder was installed as the new president of the Jaycees. It’s also a tough crop to harvest as the Granby Hemp Co-op discovered when they tried to cut down the crop at their plot on North Fork Road. Equipment was getting clogged form the hemp stalk’s tough fibre. 2004 Conservative MP Jim Gouk narrowly earned a fourth win in the federal election in the Southern Interior and called his nearest rival, NDP candidate Alex Atamanenko, the strongest candidate he had ever met. 2009 In the wake of difficult contract negotiations, the Grand Forks and District Public Library is forging ahead with the business at hand. Kendale lives at Yolo4 Art Cafe with her sister Tirzah and loves to play with one or more of her five cats. She also thinks she should be the pack female but Silhouette does not agree. When she does not get what she is asking for she smiles and paws. By nature Kendale is a super sweet and loving dog of 1½ years. Tirzah loves, loves, loves to run. Her best buddy is her brother Ardis. Full of impish character, she has a great sense of humour and is always taunting one of the other five GSDs into some kind of play or adventure. Alcohol a factor in domestic dispute On June 25 at 5:24 p.m., RCMP were called to a domestic assault which occurred on North Fork Road. “As a result of the investigation a female was taken into custody and has been released on a promise to appear,” said Lanz. “As it appeared, the woman may have used a knife to cut her common-law husband.” The cut was not serious and did not require medical attention. Lanz said that alcohol was a factor in the matter.

Inebriated male taken in

On June 25 at 9:40 p.m., RCMP were called to a report of an intoxicated male walking down Spraggett Road. “The male was staggering and walking into traffic and was almost hit by a vehicle,” said Lanz. Shoplifter caught

On June 27 at 1:18 p.m., police were called to Overwaitea to deal with a shoplifter. “The shoplifter was apprehended,” said Lanz. “Overwaitea did not want to proceed with charges. The male was given a store ban.” The shoplifter was an 81-year-old male from Grand Forks. The total amount of the theft was under $5.

Drunken dispute

On June 29 at 3:30 p.m., RCMP were called out to a disturbance at A&W in Grand Forks. “A male and female were in the business and yelling and screaming at each other,” said Lanz. “The couple did calm down. When they left the restaurant, the male once again began yelling and screaming.” The male, a 44-year-old Grand Forks resident, was then arrested for causing a disturbance by being drunk in a public place. “He was brought back to the detachment and was lodged in a cell,” said Lanz. “He was released the following morning.”

On June 30 at 3:52 a.m., police were called to an explosion structure fire on Darcy Road in Grand Forks. “As a result of the investigation so far it appears to be arson,” said Lanz. “At this time, the matter is being investigated.” Fire investigators from Nelson have been called in to go over the scene. The Grand Forks International (GFI) baseball tournament has come and gone for another year. There was certainly plenty of great, close games and some strong teams. The beer garden was a popular place for the adult crowd. For the younger crowd, there was also plenty of fun to be had with base running and impromptu ball games right behind the stands. Bringing in 12 teams from out of town as well as a number of fans, friends and relatives, the GFI is a great economic driver as they say. The bars were busy and motel rooms were very hard to come by. It’s unfortunate after all those hours of work put in by numerous volunteers that the weather turned out to be so bad. It looks like local baseball fans are a fickle bunch. Once the rain came, most went home. Of course, the weather is one thing the operating committee cannot control. You can plan make plans to help lessen the impact, but once the wet stuff starts falling there’s not much you can do except wait it out. Although numbers were decent on the final day, the fact that it took place on a regular Monday didn’t help. The Canada Day holiday was Tuesday and that meant most people were at work on Monday. As far as competition goes, for several reasons the level of competition was down from previous years. There was also a lack of true international flavour that the tournament had in the past with teams from China, Japan, Taiwan and Russia. But after a year off and a date switch, it’s almost like a new start for the GFI. The start of summer means tournament teams can have college players. The old date (early September) was also right before Nationals, which made it tough to attract top-level Canadian teams. Here’s also hoping that the return of the GFI will spur young baseball players to excel at the sport. Recent GFSS graduate Isiah McDonald is already making waves with a Canadian all-star team in a tournament in the Dominican Republic. McDonald will be playing for Thompson Rivers University’s baseball team next year in Kamloops. Here’s hoping some time in the near future Isiah will be able to lead a Grand Forks team back to the GFI. That would really give the local crowd something to cheer about.

Do they have to be the ones running the country? Second Opinion JIM HOLTZ Immigrants to this country always find a variety of things that impress them. For those from particularly impoverished countries, the abundance of food and even drinkable water is almost beyond comprehension. For some, like me, the things that are impressive are more subtle. I remember in 1968 being amazed by three things right away: the fabulous national and provincial parks, the documentaries of the National Film Board, and the CBC. I was impressed that the provincial and federal governments of this country thought highly enough of their citizens to provide benefits that were both concrete and abstract, and that celebrated the na-

tion’s most important attributes: its physical grandeur, diverse and multicultural population, and its wide ranging, open intellectual curiosity. However, successive Conservative (and conservative) governments have gnawed away at all three of the above. Parks are seen as troublesome impediments to logging and mining interests, the National Film Board is viewed as a poor substitute for commercial film making, and despite ample evidence to the contrary, the CBC is regarded as a useless enterprise that, since we have Internet availability, should be consigned to the scrap heap. This past week, the reduction in the corporation’s budget has cost 1,000 jobs and a further reduction in the programs that are offered. As a long-time educator, I realize that there are many people born with learning styles that are considered linear and sequential, people for whom metaphorical expression has little appeal. For these

people, judging the value of enterprises based on numbers, on profit and loss, makes perfect sense. In fact, it is the only basis of evaluation that makes sense to them. Expressions like “heart of the nation,” “unifying force,” “national treasure” really have no meaning for them. They never spend hours listening to interviews, commentary, or documentaries while they drive long distances or sit in their homes in remote parts of the country, on farms, in villages away from urban glut. They don’t understand the importance of sharing the laughter of the Vinyl Café with Canadians thousands of miles away, or experiencing with them the poignancy of the interviews and stories on As It Happens. They’re too busy. They live in urban areas surrounded by lots of people. They don’t understand it; they never will. No doubt they are nice people in their own right: efficient, ambitious, diligent; I just wish they weren’t the ones we always seem to elect to run the country.

Letters

Opinion

to the editor

Hooray for Isiah McDonald Editor, The Gazette: There is a young man that has just graduated from high school and this young man has the honour of being asked to play for the Canadian baseball team. I’m sure the town is very proud of him and he will probably make the City of Grand Forks be put on the map. Hooray for Isiah McDoanald.

I am a resident of only two years and I am very proud of him! His mother is a single parent and we all know how hard that can be…so let’s all get behind this family and give them our support in any way possible. Grand Forks loves baseball. Alpha Taylor, Grand Forks

Stretching sessions wonderful Editor, The Gazette: Unfortunately this past week the summertime schedule for Parks and Recreation at Christina Lake missed out on mentioning Stretching for Mobility sessions with Gisela Ko. Those of us who attend regularly were disappointed because we know how these sessions are so beneficial to us. Gisela has decided to continue these classes all the way through the summer on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in the Community Hall, not just for Christina Lake residents, but also visitors and for anyone driving out from Grand Forks for a recreational day at the Lake. There is a nominal $3 drop-in fee. As a writer and artist, with much of my time spent sitting at a computer and desk, or else working in the garden, these stretch exercises have been a blessing these past few years—helping get the kinks out my body. Gisela uses her 50 years of experiences as a physiotherapist (clown

and ballet teacher) to guide us all through gentle stretches that have us breathing into unused or stiff or sore muscles, from the top of the head to the tips of the toes—while sitting in or standing behind a chair. There’s no need to get down on the floor, or jump up and down. No fancy gear is needed; it’s “come as you are” out of the garden, or the office, from the beach—house-slippers, runners, sandals, bare feet—all work. There’s even fun with the chair line-dance as Gisela accompanies us on her kazoo. The result—good energy and circulation, laughs and a state of well-being. Anyone with a few aches and pains, or simply wanting a little more flexibility with grace is sure to feel the benefit. Thanks go to Gisela and Parks and Recreation for continuing these sessions. Leak/repair program cheaper Editor, The Gazette: As a city, Grand Forks is about 115 years old and has provided no evidence as to the condition of the main and distribution water lines that seem to date back to the origins of when the city-owned water supply was first provided. The status of the lines, and the percentage of water loss, due simply to deteriorated city water lines, is as yet unknown! The Veritec engineering report provided to Revelstoke, a city founded around the same time as Grand Forks, estimates that because of fractured infrastructure, between 27 and 74 per cent of the water provided was simply not reaching the customers! Councils in other cities including Langley, Cranbrook, Fruitvale and Revelstoke, have wisely chosen the route of first sectioning their water systems into zones or districts in order to first verify leak locations. A city meter was installed on each individual district, and with the help of acoustic leak detecting equipment and time-of-day meter monitoring, leaks were detected, targeted and repaired.

Cranbrook, for example, chose not to install water meters but embarked on a sensible search to find all their water leaks. Cranbrook has a greater percentage of newer main lines than Grand Forks due to their faster population growth, and still chose to go with a program that was recommended to Revelstoke, and in conjunction with Columbia Basin Trust, of making sure they were delivering 100 per cent of the water they provided, and specifically did not meter residences. In the Revelstoke water/leak repair program, they estimate it to cost between $50,000 and $100,000, whereas had they opted for meter installation, the cost for just under 3,000 homes would have been near $2 million. That would have been approximately $1.9 million more costly to taxpayers for the water meter option and the necessary repairs would have not even been addressed. In our city, a water leak/repair program could be implemented at 5-10 per cent of the

Not yet transitioning In a column published in the Gazette on May 14 under the headline “Town in transition,” Alan Peterson tells us that Grand Forks is in a state of transition yet he is rather vague about what he sees happening that confirms his view. What is it transitioning to? As indicated by Peterson, the demographics of the area will dictate its future. Within the next decade the population of elders on fixed incomes will increase and they will need services. What services will those be? What niche commercial ventures will they support? Can they generate sufficient economic activity to support a population of younger people with families? Peterson could enlighten us with Rousing answers to a few questions: the Rabble • Where is the evidence that established businesses are thriving in spite ROY RONAGHAN of the “retail revolution” Peterson mentions? • What new businesses are flourishing in the city? • What are the service niches that need to be filled? • How would Peterson convince people who have bought their food products from large retail chains for decades that they should buy from local producers, likely at slightly higher prices? • How can the elders who move to Grand Forks be convinced to spend their money locally rather than online or across the line? If Grand Forks is to become a “town in transition,” it will serve our purpose to know something about the history of the transition town movement. The overriding objective of people living in transition towns is to break free from a dependence upon oil as an economic driver and move to a one that uses alternative energy sources such as solar, wind and hydro. The movement began in 2003 with a project organized by Rob Hopkins who worked with students to create an energy action plan that was adopted by the Totnes town council. The movement has spread around the world in the past decade and the 100th town to join was Fujino, Japan, a town with a population of 10,000 south of Tokyo. Hopkins states, “All it is a very simple idea and a proposition: maybe the future could be like this, so here are some tools you might use. But there is something about it that is really sticky; it really grips hold of people, like burrs. We are all in this together--it’s a challenge that calls for us to come together on an unprecedented scale, rather than fracture down further and further. Rebuilding our communities is going to be pivotal in the net 10 to 16 years.” Transition Network, the coordinating body for transition towns, states, “It is an experiment on a massive scale. Transition is about the creation of resilient communities. It’s not about campaigning but designing. It’s about putting in place systems that will help us to deal with the big changes that are on the way. Those changes will be in three main areas: energy, the economy and the environment.” Should the transition be under the control of Grand Forks city council or the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary? Hopkins says, no. “...it is best for an initiative to keep moving forward themselves instead of waiting around, hoping that the local government will take action on important issues.” The role of local government is to support but not drive a Transition group. The role of the transition group is to build bridges to local and regional governments. The transition could stall if there is no plan to guide it in the direction that people envision. The sign on the west side of the city tells everyone who drives on Highway #3 that Grand Forks is “Open for Business” which likely means that every effort will be made to accommodate businesses and industrial operations should they show interest. Do residents want to leave their future city to outsiders or do they want to become the driving force behind the transition? The results will not be the same.

Leak/repair Continued from page 5

cost of metering. That is just plain common sense! Engineering evidence and recommendation proves leak detection and repair can reduce and even eliminate the water loss caused by defective water lines. Citizens just want the most efficient use of our tax dollars in providing a water system that ultimately delivers 100 per cent of the water we are paying for. Cranbrook, with a relatively young infrastructure, just finished four years of a five-year water leak detection and repair program. They already have results exceeding a 15-per-cent reduction of water consumption directly due to repair of discovered leaks. With one more year of leak detection/repair yet to be completed, their total water reduction could be 20 per cent or more. Grand Fork’s old infrastructure will no doubt have more fractures than Cranbrook’s and our potential savings from detecting and repairing is bound to produce a higher percentage in water efficiency and tax costs. Grand Forks could offer resident homeowners, businesses and new businesses evidence that the water system is providing 100 per cent of the water they are being billed for. James Hamilton, Grand Forks

Open fires are not allowed within the Southeast Fire Centre’s jurisdiction. The ban goes into effect today (Wednesday) to help prevent humancaused wildfires and protect public safety. This prohibition will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified. Specifically, prohibited activities include: • the burning of any waste, slash or other materials • stubble or grass fires of any size over any area • the use of fireworks, sky lanterns or burning barrels of any size or description This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a halfmetre wide or smaller, and it does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes. Anyone lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flam-

mable debris from around the campfire area and must have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire. Ensure that campfires are not lit or kept burning during windy conditions. Make sure the fire is fully extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time. This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department. Please check with local authorities for any other restrictions before lighting a fire. Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and

be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. The Southeast Fire Centre covers the area extending from the U.S. border in the south to Mica Dam in the north and from the Okanagan Highlands and Monashee Mountains in the west to the B.C.-Alberta border in the east. It includes the Selkirk Natural Resource District and the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District. A map of the affected area is available online at: bcwildfire.ca/ftp/!Project/ WildfireNews/6202014~111308_Southeast_Prohibition_20140602.pdf To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone. To learn more about open burning, visit the Wildfire Management Branch website at: bcwildfire.ca/hprScripts/ WildfireNews/Bans.asp For the latest information on current wildfire activity, burning restrictions, road closures and air quality advisories, go to bcwildfire.ca.

Artist to participate in stampede auction SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

Christina Lake artist Joan Bartlett has again had a bronze sculpture selected from over 300 art submissions for the 2014 Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction. The auction, which takes place on the evening of July 10, is one of the largest art auctions in Canada and several hundred art patrons attend the event each year to bid on the offerings from both U.S. and Canadian artists. This is the second time Bartlett has been in the auc-

tion. “I didn’t enter the auction last year as I had three pieces selected for a different venue at the Stampede,” Bartlett said, “but I decided to try for it again this year and was excited to have ’Showin’ Off For The Ladies’ selected. Bartlett’s focus is on western and wildlife subjects. She is represented by the Geren Gallery in Tubac, Arizona, Arizona Territory Antiques Gallery in Carefree, Arizona, Deadwood Junction Gallery in Greenwood and has recently opened Little Burro Western Art Gallery at Christina Lake where she also works on her sculptures.

Team tackles Tough Mudder Gazette Staff

Tough Mudder is an 18-20 kilometre obstacle race designed to test all around strength, stamina, team work and mental grit; the idea is not to win—you put camaraderie and team work before your course time. A local team of five women—Allie Dickson, Sharra Margerison, Tanya Rose King, Angelina McIver and Julie Cowie—met the challenge head on. Team members trained almost five months for the June 21 event in Whistler, B.C. About 7,000 people raced that day in heats of 300. The

race took just over four hours for the team; it was the first time any of them had taken on the Tough Mudder challenge, McIver said. “We trained since end of January until midJune. We had an amazing team of girls and made it through the race together!” McIver said. “We felt very accomplished and pleased with the event and would do it again!” It was a great experience and good motivation to get in shape and stay active, she added. “It might not be for everyone but for us it was something we would do again in a heartbeat. We left with a great experience, lots of stories and a few bumps and bruises.”

Lacey ran into the hot bats of the Bulldogs in the money round. “The Saints are one of the teams that we pulled in at the last minute to fill in and they made it to the money round,” said Thomas. “They’ve been surprising. But everyone’s played well. We thought the West Coast Guns would be a little stronger but they were in a tough division.” Another surprising team was the Parkland White Sox from Alberta. “They had a great game this morning,” said Thomas. “Parkland was seeded eighth and took on the No. 1 seed Thurston County Senators and they had a 1-0 lead going into the eight inning (before falling 3-1). That was a really close one for Thurston to advance. So some really good ball. Lots of great games.” The honourary host and closest team the Trail Orioles won one of three games in the round-robin but failed to advance to the money round. Trail beat the West Coast Guns 17-6 in their opening game Wednesday then lost to Seattle Studs 14-9 and Everett Merchants 10-2. “Trail was in a tough division,” said Thomas. “They had a good win the first night and the other two were tough losses. Seattle and Everett are both really good teams. Stiff competition all around.” There was plenty of other excitement around the ballpark from bingo every game to streakers across the field. There was an opening ceremony on Thursday where several people and groups were honoured for their contributions to the GFI. A day earlier there was an exhibition game played between two youth teams which saw Castlegar Warriors beat Grand Forks Babe Ruth team 2-1. That game was a fundraiser for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. “That game was amazing,” said Thomas. “What a beautiful evening. The park was full. The kids played under the lights. There was great attendance. Grand Forks lost 2-1 but it was a great game. The kids made some great plays. It was fantastic.” Thomas said the GFI committee has donated to ALS for several years now. “We decided on it because ALS is Lou Gehrig’s disease and he was a ball player,” she said. “Plus there are some people in our community who suffer from Lou Gehrig’s disease. It’s not a high profile one for fundraisers but we’ve chosen it as our charity of choice.”

The Piranhas were in action recently at the Creston Waves swim meet where they competed against clubs from Colville, Nelson, Trail, Kimberley, Castlegar and the hosts. “The Creston meet was a success with three of nine individuals standing on the podium with medals in hand,” said assistant coach Doug Van Ek. “Junior coaches Sarah Heric and Nicole

Nuyten performed well in both the pool and as coaching staff aiding the younger swimmers in their warm-ups and race techniques.” Grand Forks Piranha swimmer Ethan Argue finished well ahead of the pack as he took the top prize in division 4 boys. Also finishing in the medals were a couple of coaches: Nuyten, who picked up silver in division 6 girls, and Doug Van Ek, who took gold in division 8 boys. Madelaine Coupland was the

swimmer of the meet for the Piranhas in Creston. “She obtained her first ever 100M individual medley time and took 38 seconds from her best time in the 100M freestyle,” said Grand Forks head coach Robyn Van Ek. “She performed well in all her events and proved to be a great competitor. Achieving multiple best times, Maddy has clearly shown that she is deserving of this recognition for her performance in all six races and two relays in which she competed in.”

Quote of the WeeK: I think on-stage nudity is disgusting, shameful and damaging to all things American. But if I were 22 with a great body, it would be artistic, tasteful, patriotic and a progressive religious experience. – Shelley Winters (1922 - 2006) Joke of the Week: It was the first day of school. Harry’s mother went into his bedroom and said, “Come on Harry, get up now. You have to go to school today.” “But I don’t want to go to school,” replied Harry, “I want to stay in bed. Why do I have to go to school”? “Because,” answered his mother, “you’re a teacher!”

The big news was the Christina Lake 2014 Men’s Open held on the weekend of June 14-15. Congratulations to Galen Johnston of Chilliwack being the winner with a low gross of 140, Leroy Heustis of Trail being the winner with a low net of 131 and Shane Cutinha of Kelowna for having a Hole in One and winning a Sears lawn tractor. Thanks to all the supporters of the tournament— without you the tournament would not be as good. The Christina Lake Men’s Open is celebrating its 51 anniversary and the biggest amateur tournament in B.C. having 240 golfers attend. Many kudos to Kevin and his crew for making the tournament a success. The second big news for manager Kevin Maffioli and his proshop, restaurant and grounds staff was receiving a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. The Christina Lake Golf Club has received a 4.5 rating out of a possible 5. Congratulations to all! Through all the rain, cold and dreariness, the 2014 Men’s Open was played. Our own John Dedels came in with a First Flight Low Gross of 141 and Shane Cutinha of Kelowna came in with a First Flight Low Net of 139. Riders raise awareness of CF Riders from the Gear Up for Cystic Fibrosis (GearUp4CF) ride recently stayed in Grand Forks on their way through to Banff as part of a nine-day, 1,200-kilometre bike ride which started in Vancouver. The 24 riders stayed at the Western Traveller Motel on June 24 before heading up to Rossland the following morning. The ride has many inspirational stories such as Bill Markvoort, who just turned 65 and has raised over $65,000 in memory of his daughter Eva, who host her battle with CF in 2010 at the age of 25, and Walter Brennen, father of two girls with CF. He lost one daughter to CF at age 12 and the second daughter had a lung transplant in 2012. Three of the riders participating this year have cystic fibrosis: Paul Underhill (double lung transplant recipient), George Kuelen (double lung transplant recipient), and Mike Hamilton. “I have two kids with cystic fibrosis,” said Brennen. “My older daughter died when she was 12 years old, that was 11 years ago now. This disease affects a lot of people—it affected both my daughters. It’s a genetic disease that gets passed down. My younger daughter Al-

lison, we call her Allie, is now 21 years old. She needed a double lung transplant which she fortunately got two years ago.” Brennen said he and the other riders are out trying to raise awareness and money to fund research to find a cure for the disease. He said there were over 100 riders at the start who went through Vancouver to Chilliwack and 45 who went on from there on the second day to Manning Park. “There’s 21 riders who are doing the

was not about her being from another country, but that was just another comment they made in their frustration— and one they regret. Following this, parents of the offenders said that the letter alone was not enough for what they had put Anna through and it was decided litter-picking would also be carried out in their local area.” Newton said: “I have spoken to all parties recently. Anna said she was pleased with how the conference had gone and that she has since seen some of the boys on the estate, who have said hello and been very friendly. “One of the parents said her son was upset as he had not realized just how bad they had made her feel, and the comment about her worrying about the house being set on fire had particularly struck home with him.” Chief Inspector Dave Houchin, who heads the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Hull, said: “We have invested a lot of time and effort in training all of our neighbourhood staff in Hull in restorative conferencing. They pride themselves in doing the right thing and delivering more effective solutions than the criminal justice system can sometimes offer. “It has been a source of frustration that this excellent work hasn’t been reflected in our reported figures and it’s only right that it is now acknowledged. I want officers to approach every report with the mindset of seeking the right outcome for the victim and the right outcome for the offender and not to be influenced by whether that will reflect badly in performance figures.” Richard Tarnoff is coordinator of the Boundary Restorative Justice Program. Molly Kootnekoff (nee Elasoff) What is a remarkable life? Some would say that it’s having loved ones close by; that it’s having family members and friends who care about us and are there with us during both the trials and celebrations of life. If that is, in fact, the case, then Molly Kootnekoff lived an extraordinarily remarkable life. Molly was a true example of, and the epitome of, unconditional love. Whether it was through a simple, kind word, or through the delicate touch of her master cook’s hands, she would extend love through many of the daily actions we call small. And sometimes, even when it was hard to extend that love, because of grief, pain or the challenges of life, she was the true family matriarch who, in her own simple way, guided and grounded her family. Molly, at a young age, deeply connected to the Doukhobor saying “where there is love, there is God”. And then she lived that way throughout her lifetime. Molly was born on November 4th, 1926 in Grand Forks B.C. to Nick and Molly Elasoff. She was the eldest of five children: Alec, Lois, Alice and Bill. The family grew up in London Village, which was located in West Grand Forks, just off of Hardy Mountain Road. Molly attended school until Grade 3, and then had to stay home to help look after her siblings and assist her mother with daily life chores. Her childhood was one that required her to become responsible at an early age: hard work, dedication, family and the Doukhobor community were vitally important. Education back then took the form of connecting with others, deep spiritual understanding, and the knowledge that it is simple, hard work that brings people together. In 1942, Molly met Bill (William) Kootnekoff and they fell in love. She was 15 years old. They got married in February 1943 and moved to the communal home of the Kootnekoffs when she was just 16. Molly continued to participate in the daily and weekly chores of communal living. Molly and Bill lived together in Grand Forks for the rest of their lives. They had three children: Vera, Laura and Katie. And then life got busy. Molly would keep their homestead organized: cooking, cleaning, looking after children, gardening, canning, growing, and seeding. But during that busy time, Molly still found time to participate in all USCC activities and groups. One of Molly’s greatest involvements was with Doukhobor choirs, as Bill had a great passion for singing. Molly was a very strong-willed person, and she would find ways to empower herself. One time, much to Molly’s dismay, Bill left Canada on a USCC delegation trip. In defiance, Molly had her long braids cut off and her hair permed. Another time, when Bill had left for an extended period, she was determined to get her driver’s license, so she did. Molly and Bill made numerous trips with choirs and on their own with friends and family, including trips to Russia, Hawaii and Mexico. Molly and Bill were especially fond of Mexico and spent time in Acapulco, Melaque and other destinations. But there was one special talent Molly had that the entire family came to appreciate: her love of cooking. Molly had a way with food. Somehow it just tasted better when she made it. Her secret ingredient being love. Molly made the best whole wheat “Pride of the Valley” pancakes with her famous blueberry sauce and sour cream. Bill used to say she should open a restaurant called Molly’s Pancake House. But she refused. It was through food the Molly would extend love, welcoming family and friends into her house on countless occasions. In the later years of Molly and Bill’s life, they enjoyed going to casinos. After the sale of their farm in the early 1990s, they bought a condominium in Grand Forks, near the Kettle River and facing the Grand Forks City Park. They thoroughly enjoyed their life there and they thought they were in heaven. After Bill’s passing in 2004, Molly courageously continued to live on her own for several years. Molly loved to be with people and was a “social butterfly”. She truly detested being by herself. In her later years she met a friend, John Koftinoff, and they enjoyed spending time together and developed a good friendship. In 2009, her health started to deteriorate. Consequently, in December 2011, she moved to Boundary Lodge Assisted Living, where she had the most excellent and compassionate care imagined. On June 15, 2014, she was admitted to Boundary Hospital and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 19. Molly was predeceased by her parents Nick and Molly, her brother Alec, her son-in-law Basil, and Great Grandson Daniel Kinakin. Molly is survived by her three children: Vera Jmaiff (Harry), Laura Kootnekoff and Katie Chernoff (Wally); 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Molly’s family would like to take the opportunity to thank all of her family and friends. A special thank you goes to all the staff of Boundary Lodge and to Molly Skerritt for always being there. Also, a special thank you to all the nursing staff at Boundary Hosptial and Dr. Nathan Dalla Lana for all the wonderful care Molly received. And a special thank you also to the USCC organization. Molly transitioned very peacefully to her spirit life in the same palliative care room her husband Bill did 10 years earlier. Now, if you listen closely, you can hear Molly singing, laughing and enjoying herself. You can smell her Pride of the Valley pancakes grilling on the stove. You can feel her warm arms wrap around you as she sings a Doukhobor melody. And you can see a beautiful woman, that despite the many challenges of a life-fully-lived, smile and look at you with her deep, understanding and unconditional eyes: the eyes of Molly the daughter, Molly the sister, Molly the mother, Molly the grandmother, and Molly the great-grandmother. It is Molly’s smile that we embrace and take with us as we continue on our own life journeys.

Legion Branch 59 hosts open house The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59 opened its doors Saturday to show off new renovations to the kitchen, lounge and washrooms. John had a limited English education in the school which was located in their community. The Russian language he learned from within the family and the community, where at that time people of the Doukhobor faith only spoke Russian. He also attended some schooling in the Russian language provided by their community. In the late 1930s, his family moved to Grand Forks, and settled in the west end of town. In 1941, John was united in marriage to Molly Mahonin. From the beginning they lived with John’s parents and soon after they bought themselves some land near the area of Carson Road, and moved into a modest house there. The area was known as Chistyakovoye of which they were members. They were blessed with two children, son John, and daughter Pearl. John and Molly always had a bountiful garden, growing different vegetables that their family received their nourishment from, summer and winter. In the early years of their life together, John started working in the forest industry, skidding, driving CAT and soon became an independent log hauler with his own truck. He stayed with this job until his retirement. In the early 1980’s they built themselves a new house west of town near the black train bridge. John was a lifetime member of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ and through his lifetime contributed to the organization wherever he was able to. In his leisure time John enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid fisherman and also took pride in ornate woodworking as a hobby. His woodworking art was visibly displayed around his home. In January 2005, John suffered the loss of his loving wife Molly, and through the rest of his life he lived with his children, John and Pearl, who cared for him. In his later years he had some health problems, but like they say: “He was on his feet”. The years took their course and some four years ago John’s health started to decline and over time deteriorated considerably. Two years ago he was admitted to a section of the Boundary Hospital – Hardy View Lodge, where on Thursday morning, June 19, 2014, with his family by his side, John peacefully passed away. He was 92 years of age. John was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Tanya Koftinoff, his brothers Fred and Peter Koftinoff, and his sister Mabel Popoff. He is survived by his children: son John and daughter Pearl Cox, both of Grand Forks; three grandchildren, Gary Koftinoff with wife Anya of Toronto, Ontario, Darrell with wife Patty Cox, and Darcy Cox with partner Jennifer, all of Grand Forks; six great-grandchildren: Anton, Alexander, Jessica with partner Steve, Becca, Logan and Sydnie; and one great-great-grandson Austin; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John was a loving and devoted family man who enjoyed his time with both family and friends. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. The surviving family wishes to extend their gratitude to the local ‘Home Care’ and Hardy View Lodge for their superb care in making John’s remaining years as comfortable as they could. Thank you to Jerry Seminoff for officiating the service; Everett Baker and staff at Grand Forks Funeral Home for the professional services; thank you for the phone calls, flowers, and food brought to the house; JJ Verigin for his kind words; everyone who spoke at the service, the singers, the pallbearers, the ladies who prepared the wonderful lunch, and the men who prepared the gravesite. May God accept his soul into His Heavenly Kingdom, and may he rest in peace.

From Council Chambers

The City is

“OPEN FOR BUSINESS”! T

City has installed to provide both a City and a Regional map that identify some of the more popular recreational opportunities in the area such as tubing, hiking, biking, and camping among other activities, and provide information relevant to the area they are stationed. All in all the City has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming tourist season while continuing to make Grand Forks a destination. Results of the Commuter Challenge that took place during Environment Week from June 2nd-8th. Michelle Caskey, who is very active with the Environment Committee representing the

he City is undertaking several initiatives to support the “Open for Business” mantra that it has recently adopted. The development of an Economic Profile for the City is available for downloading at www.grandforks.ca/economic-development/ This document is intended to provide current information to potential investors, and is one more tool in the City’s business attraction tool box. On June 18th, Council hosted a Community Showcase that highlighted potential investment opportunities within the City. The showcase provided information locally first with the intention of introducing it to a larger audience in the near future. For information contact: Info@grandforks.ca The Environment Committee has been hard at work and on June 20th City Council held a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration and acknowledgment of the great work the committee has undertaken. The Committee’s work on riparian area education is highlighted in the educational sign that has been erected at City Park. The intention is to provide the public with information regarding the importance of the sensitive area that surrounds the water ways. Bat houses are a different approach used to control the mosquito population and other insects around the community. The collaborative effort that went into the building of the bat houses speaks to the good work of the Environment Committee. A big thank you from City Council goes out to the Environment Committee, Telus, the Boundary Woodworkers Guild, Stryker Industries, and the Granby Wilderness Society for their efforts in making and erecting five Bat Houses throughout the community. With the beautification of the community, Council felt it was important to provide information for tourists and locals alike by highlighting activities that are available in the area. The Kiosk at the base of Observation Mountain is just one of several that the

BC Lung Association, has won the “Individual who commuted sustainably all 5 days outside of Metro Vancouver” category. Congratulations Michelle!! Council would like to say a special thank you to Jock and Betty Anne Mackay for their ongoing environmental stewardship, and donation of a bat house in support of that project.

City Hall Sneak Peak The Sneak Peak provided a great opportunity to take a look at City Hall before reconstruction begins. The mainfloor of the building has been stripped back to the brick that you see outside. Late last week the City was able to award the tender to

Hil-Tech, who are local to the Kootenay Boundary area, and located in Trail. For more information on Hil-Tech go to: www.hil-tech.ca. Tentatively, construction is scheduled to run from July 3rd until October 31st, 2014.

Elections To better answer your questions and provide the public with the most current elections information the City of Grand Forks has added an elections page to the website. Check it out at: www.grandforks.ca/2014-local-government-elections/

Good Sam Samboree

Paving of 68th Avenue At the May 26th Regular Meeting, Council approved paving on 68th Avenue, from Kettle River Drive to 19th Street. This project is in keeping with the water

conservation measures that the City is undertaking, and will extend the life expectancy of underground infrastructure.

It was hard not to notice the flood of RV’s sitting in Dick Bartlett Park! Council was pleased to have the Good Sam Club choose Grand Forks as its destination for 2014. The club brought 142 RV’s and 276 people to Grand Forks. We hope you enjoyed your stay in our wonderful community!

Have fun and be safe this summer
