Search called off in GE Park Rescue crews will wait for water levels to change by M on i sh a M ar ti n s staff reporter
Neil Corbett/THE NEWS
Patriot Robin Schaefer, 6, gets ready for Canada Day by colouring some Maple Leaf flags on Sunday afternoon at the Pitt Meadows Museum and Archives. The museum offers summer programs for kids every Sunday from 2-4 p.m., and starting July 10 will offer Heritage Thursday programs, from 1-3 p.m., for kids ages 5-10.
The search for a woman who drowned in a creek in Golden Ears Provincial Park won’t resume until water levels change. The 23-year-old Surrey resident was on a day trip with family when she slipped off rocks near the Upper Burke Falls around 4:15 p.m., June 25 and plunged into the rushing water below. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue, Coquitlam Search and Rescue, North Shore Rescue’s swiftwater kayak team, Talon Helicopters and a RCMP helicopter assisted in the search, but were unable to locate the woman after scouring the area for four days. Despite locating the woman’s sweater late Thursday, there has been no sign of her since. Crews believe her body may be trapped under rocks or other debris. See Search, p5
Kanaka Creek back in class Labour Relations Board rules summer school an essential service by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
School is back in session at Kanaka Creek elementary after the B.C. Teachers’ Federation agreed to lift its picket line at the yearround school. “That, to me, is a show of good faith from the BCTF,” said Deanna Lackey, of the school’s parent advisory council. “They are fighting for kids.” The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school
district sent a letter to parents, dated June 28, saying that all teaching, clerical and support staff will be in attendance, and there will be no picketing outside the Maple Ridge school, which has three weeks left in its balanced calendar. “I know many of you were growing increasingly concerned about the possibility of continued disruption to your child’s learning, and I am very happy to be able to share this good news with you,” said a letter signed by acting superintendent Laurie Meston. It was a relief to parents, who worried their children could miss more than five weeks of school – unlike the two weeks that students on the traditional calendar missed.

Kanaka has a balanced calendar, with three three-month terms, with a month off between each. The strike began right in the middle of the final term. With the strike lifted, students will be back in school until July 23. The letter from the board said that the Labour Relations Board ordered school to resume there, and at other schools around the province with year-round calendars. However, it was the union that decided to lift the picket line. The Kanaka calendar has students scheduled to return to class in early September, at the same time as the rest of the district. Final phase of downtown renovations Changes for Lougheed Hwy., 224th to 216th streets by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
A
few more of the final pieces of the downtown puzzle will fall into place in the fall. The District of Maple Ridge held an open house Thursday to preview the plan for rebuilding the stretch of Lougheed Highway from 224th to 226th streets. The project, yet to be costed out, will complete the downtown renovations started a few years ago that included rebuilding 224th St. from Dewdney Trunk Road to Lougheed Hwy., as well as rebuilding Lougheed from 222nd 224th streets and from 226th to 228th streets. “From 222nd St., it’s just a continuation of that. Same street trees, same sidewalk,” said Rachel Ollenberger, with the district. The project entails repaving Lougheed and rebuilding and widening the sidewalk, in sections to the standard three metres. New trees will be planted with underground structures that will speed growth and prevent roots from heaving the sidewalks. “We will have the wagon wheel crosswalks which people seem to like so much,” added Ollenberger. She was referring to the circular motif that characterizes the sidewalk lines in the rebuilt sections. New street lights and furniture identical to that which has been installed on the previous sections will follow. Costs to complete the twoblock section of Lougheed, which will then link to the section re-

A completion date hasn’t been set either, only that it will be sometime next year. Part of the same project and due for completion this fall is the construction of a new sidewalk on the south side of Selkirk Avenue, between 225th and 226th
streets. Currently, there’s only a sidewalk for a part of that distance. “Selkirk will start to look like a street,” said Ollenberger. New trees and street lights and hanging baskets will be part of the new sidewalk. The new sidewalk will continue around the corner of 226th St. on the east side, up to the highway. The district says the intent of
the project is to increase livability and support business growth in the downtown, while improving conditions for pedestrians and shoppers. Improvements are also scheduled for Edge Street at Dewdney Trunk Rd. Jackie Chow, of the local cycling group HUB, wants Lougheed Hwy., through the downtown, narrowed to two lanes, bordered
by bicycle lanes on either side. Doing so would allow preservation of the parking lanes and could “dramatically improve the shopping experience and vibrancy of Lougheed,” she said on Facebook. However, she added, the group has been told that traffic volumes are too high on Lougheed Hwy. and that it isn’t part of the cycling network.
Maple Ridge council aims to help tenants, single mothers Also wants province to regulate party buses by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Maple Ridge council has a half dozen ways to make the world a better place. Next it will see if anyone cares. Last week, council approved several resolutions for the Union of B.C. Municipalities. One is to ask the provincial government to review the Residential Tenancy Act. The preamble pointed out that landlords still have trouble evicting problem tenants – while tenants or renters are also
taken advantage of by landlords. Council also wants to make things a bit less cushy for the home-furnishings industry by asking the provincial government to require deposits on mattresses, so there’s an incentive to recycle rather than dump them. Council also approved four other requests from the social planning advisory committee, including a call for the provincial government to regulate the party bus industry. Restaurant and bar operators also are asking for party bus rules, and a report from the social planning advisory committee notes that California last year passed a bill requiring adult chaperones to ride on such buses.
Dr. Schnarr Dr. Trotter Dr. Gill Dr. Bains 22320 Brown Ave.,Maple Ridge, BC Dr. Grewal

The report also says that drinking during teen years can affect memory and thinking and upset the normal development of bones, organs and muscles. “The party bus industry and government need to work together to ensure that standards and regulations protect young people and the community at large.” Maple Ridge resident Julie Raymond and daughter Danielle visited the legislature earlier this year because the New Democrat opposition has taken on their cause. Raymond, whose daughter Shannon died on July 26, 2008 after taking two ecstasy pills and drinking alcohol during a birthday party for a friend on a party bus. She was 16.
Vancouver-Fairview NDP MLA George Heyman has asked Transportation Minister Todd Stone to commit to regulating party buses before another senseless tragedy occurs. But Stone said new regulations are not the answer, that operators just have to follow the rules. The social planning committee also suggested that UBCM ask the province to set up “sobering centres” around B.C. The centres can also help reduce the number of visits to emergency departments as well as the number of police calls. A final council resolution asks the provincial government to stop clawing back child support payments for single mothers on
income assistance, so that mothers can keep up to $300 in child support. The social planning advisory committee noted that the base rate in income assistance is $945 a month for a mother and child. Currently, that amount is reduced by the amount received in child support. “Families receive minimal support for their children via the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation, yet this ministry deducts child support payments from the benefit it pays out,” says the committee. It added that families receive most of their support for children from the National Child Tax Benefit.

Ridge company offers Segway tours on Pitt dikes by M onisha M ar t ins staff reporter
The City of Pitt Meadows has approved a three-month pilot project for Segway tours on its dikes. Wild Glide B.C. is the only company in Metro Vancouver to offer guided tours on the two-wheeled electric vehicles and plans to begin showing tourists the city’s unique waterfront in the first week of July. “We’ve been trying to get into Pitt Meadows for a while,” said Neila Scott, who owns the Maple Ridge-based tour company with her hus-
band Chuck. The company already offers tours in North Vancouver’s Lower Seymour Reservoir and along Ladner’s Roberts Bank. Although Segway tours are popular across major cities in Europe and the United States, the vehicles are banned from roads and sidewalks in B.C. “So we found places where they are welcome - trails and dikes,” said Scott, who brought a Segway to council’s committee meeting last week to convince politicians to endorse the pilot project. Scott added that Seg-

“If it [the teachers strike] is not resolved by then, we’re in the same situation as everyone else come September,” said Lackey. She added that Kanaka parents were particularly worried about the Grade 7 students, who would be behind their high school peers as they started Grade 8 next year. The union leadership had indicated that it was concerned with the amount of payroll the
ways are really easy to learn to operate, and tour participants are trained on how to “glide” before they set out. Scott compares the experience to riding one of those conveyer belts they have at the airport, or riding a horse. “A bicycle will fall over if you stop balancing. But not a Segway, like a horse it balances all by itself,” said Scott. “It’s extremely safe and more controllable than a bicycle.” The Segway trips offered by Wild Glide
Kanaka teachers could potentially be asked to give up, and the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association lobbied the union leadership on their behalf. There is a couple who both teach at the school, noted Lackey, and another two Kanaka teachers are married to teachers from other schools – so the job action had the potential to cause real financial hardship. The Labour Relations Board offered a ruling about summer school, declaring it an essential service for all students who have failed required courses –
but only those which they will not be able to take again next year. Students who simply want to improve a passing grade will not have that opportunity this summer, because the BCTF strike continues. Under the LRB ruling, the board must now give the MRTA a list of all remedial Grade 10, 11 and 12 courses that it will offer. It is due by noon Wednesday. Thursday morning they are to meet, and determine how many teachers will be needed. The government must lift its

The city will waive its bylaw that prohibits Segways on its dikes for the duration of the pilot project and Wild Glide B.C. will have to carry additional insurance. “I think this is an interesting proposal but we have to remember that the dikes are multiuse and somethings do not mix together, and that’s motorized vehicles… with very excitable horses and dogs that are off leash,” said Coun. Janis Elkerton. “So I think this is a compromise … to at least give it a chance. We’ll wait and see how this works out.”

‘Be prepared’ Search from front
RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the search has been hampered by high water and strong currents. The location where the woman drowned is treacherous, as warm temperatures have melted snow from the peaks above, making streams run fast. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue manager Rick Laing said the Upper Falls section of Gold Creek runs through a small canyon. “It’s only 500 or 600 metres long, but presents its challenges,” said Laing, adding that accessing the area is difficult
because crews need to be lowered into the canyon with ropes. “We are prepared to do it, but we need to make sure the conditions are safe.” Parks staff will monitor levels in Gold Creek by using a rock near a bridge as an indicator. “We need water levels to change, either go way up or way down and hopefully that will move her from where she is,” said Laing. With the summer camping season underway, Laing hopes people heading out into the backcountry are prepared for an emergency. • For a list of 10 essentials to take on a hike, visit rmsar.bc.ca.

Science flip flop Two weights, two measures. Whichever is more convenient. At least that is how it seems Prime Minister Stephen Harper deals with science, scientists and their advice. What other explanation can there be for Mr. Harper saying, in a CBC interview, in reference to parents who, for various reasons, do not allow their children to receive immunization shots, “it’s a tragedy when people start to go off on their own theories and not listen to scientific evidence.” Let’s take a pause to let that bit of irony sink in. Mr. Harper has consistently worked to eliminate or, at minimum, impede the development of scientific research, eliminate the objectivity of science from any debate by muzzling scientists, cutting budgets and just plain ignoring their findings and advice. Facts can be problematic, a nuisance, a hinderance, especially when he has an agenda and the only thing between Mr. Harper and the realization of his agenda is science. Unless, of course, the facts support his agenda. Knowledge of our environment, and the deplorable condition it is in, is particularly troubling for Mr. Harper’s agenda. So gone is most of the funding for Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans, as well as for the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory, and the Experimental Lakes Area. If we don’t know how mismanaged and mistreated the environment is, then we won’t have to lie awake worrying. Thanks, Mr. Harper. – Black Press

Life after the Tsilhqot’in decision VICTORIA – The Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision on aboriginal title held by the Tsilhqot’in Nation leaves many questions to be answered. Perhaps the biggest is this: Will British Columbia exist as we know it today by the B.C. Views end of this century? Tom Fletcher Or will it devolve into dozens of semiautonomous regions, through treaties or similar court actions, as the only Canadian province that never completed historic treaties? The Tsilhqot’in decision appears to uphold the key finding of the 2007 trial, that 1,700 square kilometres of the Nemiah Valley west of Williams Lake are essentially owned by the people who occupied it hundreds if not thousands of years ago. It’s not quite ownership. Federal and provincial jurisdiction still applies, and their authority varies with the strength of the aboriginal title claim. Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin ruled that the province overstepped its authority by issuing logging permits in the valley in 1983. McLachlin noted that lawyers for B.C. first argued that the logging was to control mountain pine beetle, then dropped that argument in its first appeal. She also upheld the decision of the trial judge, one-time NDP leadership contender David Vickers, who rejected B.C.’s position that the economic value of the
timber to the province overrode the thenvaguely defined aboriginal title. Here’s McLachlin’s definition: “The nature of aboriginal title is that it confers on the group that holds it the exclusive right to decide how land is used and the right to benefit from those uses, subject to the restriction that the uses must be consistent with the group nature of the interest and the enjoyment of the land by future generations.” That’s not land ownership in the feesimple sense of the term. It locks in communal ownership, which I and many others have argued is at the root of the poverty seen in many aboriginal communities. Another big question: Is there any future for B.C.’s 20-year-old treaty process, or will this precedent-setting case send more First Nations to court, or to the barricades as the Tsilhqot’in did on a logging road in 1983? One of the unique advantages that have emerged from the handful of modern treaties in B.C. is that aboriginal communities have more options in land ownership. By voluntary agreement, they can convert land to fee-simple ownership, making it available for mortgage or sale. Modern treaty holders also get out from under the federal Indian Act, which remains in force despite this latest decision. One of the big questions asked in the days after the Tsilhqot’in decision was this: Is the Northern Gateway pipeline project dead? None of the aboriginal communities along the pipeline route has this kind of declared aboriginal title. Few if any would
have a similar strength of claim as the Tsilhqot’in, who fought a small war to defend their territory from a wave of gold seekers in the 1860s. One that does is the Haida Nation, whose occupation of a beautiful group of islands was long defended militarily, and never challenged by any other aboriginal group. Among others, the Haida Nation was represented in the Tsilhqot’in case as interveners. Council of the Haida Nation president Peter Lantin said after the decision that his team is preparing its own aboriginal title case for trial.
“One of the big questions asked in the days after the Tsilhqot’in decision was this: Is the Northern Gateway pipeline project dead?”
Few doubt that this assertion of title will be successful, either by negotiation or court ruling. But there is a unique aspect to the Haida claim that would set another precedent. They claim title to the ocean around Haida Gwaii, a challenge to anyone wishing to sail tankers through.

THE NEWS/letters
Role: world class energy transportation Editor, The News: Re: Protestors disapprove pipeline decision (The News, June 20). While pipeline protesters are ideologically opposed to resource development, I think most people will agree that the only rational way for governments to deal with major development projects is to base those decisions on facts and expert scientific advice. That is why, four years ago, the National Energy Board and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency created an independent Joint Review Panel (JRP) to review the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal.
The panel heard from over 1,450 participants, and reviewed over 175,000 pages of evidence and 9,000 letters of comment. In December 2013, the panel’s report concluded: “Based on a scientific and precautionary approach to this complex review, the panel found that the project, if built and operated in compliance with the [209] conditions set out in its report, would be in the public interest.” After a careful review of the JRP’s report, our government has accepted the recommendation to impose those 209 conditions on this pipeline project. These include requirements
such as in sensitive areas, making the pipeline walls 20 per cent thicker than current standards, increasing the frequency of in-line inspections beyond current practices, requiring the use of two escort tugs through the Douglas Channel, and deployment of additional radar to monitor marine Kamp traffic. It’s important to note that before the project
left wondering what’s really behind the silence on Enbridge coming from the prime minister and his B.C. caucus. Mike Gildersleeve points out that climate change is essentially the “elephant in the room that nobody’s talking about.” The last several years have seen reports from a number of groups – including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the United States government – which calculate the potentially disastrous economic costs of doing nothing about climate change. Most recently, Hank Paulsen, former U.S. treasury secretary, and Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, via the “Risky Business” report, that we have no time to waste if we are to stave off the worst economic consequences of climate change. This is essentially the same message the United Nation’s International Panel on Climate Change
and people like David Suzuki have been putting out there for years. But when the World Bank, the IMF and members of the billionaire class point out that it’s economically foolish to put off our transition to renewable energy sources, we’re likely witnessing a growing consensus about which energy projects will make the most sense for our collective future. It’s a no-brainer that the continued development of the oil sands is unlikely to be a popular project with those who understand the climate change issue well. President Barack Obama has yet to approve the Keystone XL project, despite the best efforts of former Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver and former Alberta Premier Alison Redford, indicating that business as usual may already be over. In February, Mr. Obama publicly took Mr. Harper to task about his feeble efforts to re-
‘Ignoring science’ Editor, The News: Re: Protestors disapprove pipeline decision (The News, June 20). People who follow federal politics weren’t surprised about cabinet’s decision to approve the Enbridge Pipeline. After all, our Albertan prime minister has been all about making Canada into a world energy superpower. To make life easier for ‘Big Oil,’ he has muzzled scientists, antagonized First Nations people and thrown out much of the legislation previously used to protect our environment. Stephen Harper’s also embarrassed many Canadians by making a mockery of proposed international emissions standards, such as those found in the Kyoto protocol. duce greenhouse gas emissions at the “Three Amigos” summit in Mexico. Then there were the Calgary floods of 2013, which killed four people. The Insurance Bureau of Canada has called the cost of this flood event “staggering,” and while it’s already the costliest disaster in Canadian history, we don’t yet know the final total. Alarmingly, affected people discovered that their insurance didn’t cover damage caused by ground water. The insurance industry continues to reduce what it covers, while increasing deductibles and premiums to ensure its sustainability and reduce its exposure to risk. Could it be that the message Mr. Harper was ignoring when it came from scientists is one he can’t ignore now, that it’s coming from bankers, insurers and fellow politicians? As the temperatures start to rise, creating ideal conditions for mosquitoes, residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are being reminded to fight the bite. So far this year, there have been fewer nuisance calls about mosquitoes as B.C. had a drier spring and lower freshet. But residents are being urged to report standing water to the mosquito control hotline to ensure a bite-free summer. When you call the hotline to report standing water, Culex Environmental, which operates Metro Vancouver’s mosquito control program in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, responds within 48 hours to treat it with a natural bacterial larvicide to kill any mosquito larvae before they hatch. It’s the best way to help us, said Scott McMahon, project manager with Culex, which currently monitors 41 sites in Maple Ridge and 32 in Pitt Meadows. So far this year, the hotline has fielded only one call from Pitt Meadows and around three from Maple Ridge. Most of the calls to the hotline are coming from Fort

Fortunately, the mosquitoes that have hatched this year aren’t the kind that carry West Nile Virus. McMahon said they are classified as nuisance mosquitoes and are more of an annoyance than a public health risk. To avoid getting bit by mosquitoes, Fraser Health recommends wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, using a DEET-based or Picaridin insect repellent, and avoid being outside at dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes

Residents can help by getting rid of standing water on their properties. Common culprits are water in flower pots, in garbage can lids, in empty bottles on sun decks, and in children’s toys and patio furniture that have been sitting outside all year. • Report standing water at 604872-1912.

Metal band from MRSS gets ready to play Adstock X by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
W
hen you’ve been a band since Grade 5, there’s little doubt you’ve gone through your share of names. Before they were Treachery, the metal sextet from Maple Ridge secondary was Flying Aces, Tazer, Arocks, Too Close to The Sun and If All Else Fails. They won their high school’s Battle of the Bands this year as May Gods Fall. Four months later, they reincarnated with their current name - a monicker that means a betrayal of trust or deceptive action. “If we ever get signed, we should get a plaque with all our names chronologically,” jokes Connor Rasmussen, one of two vocalists for the band as they prepared to practice for their first local gig - a youth spot at Adstock on Sunday. One band member was so stoked with the trademarked name “Tazer”, he wrote it on his only guitar. Sadly, the name didn’t stick. The name changes though have done little to alter the band’s passion for heavy metal. “We all progressed through the same way,” says Rasmussen, recounting how their taste have spanned metal’s ever-expanding subgenres from Van Halen in Grade 6 and 7 to Avenge Sevenfold and Bullet for My Valentine in Grade 8. “Then it got progressively heavier and heavier.” We all have ideas of what we want to sound like, adds Rasmussen as everyone chimes into suggest just where Treachery falls on metal’s
scale, a genre characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, bold beats and vocals straight out of Hell. But that also makes us special, says rhythm guitarist Jacob McCallum, who shares the stage with lead guitarist Josh Collins and bassist Luke Dobishok. Rasmussen prefers Djent (pronounced gent, an onomatopoeia for a palm-muted, distorted guitar chord), which is a sub genre of progressive metal, pioneered by bands like Meshuggah, Textures and Animals as Leader as well as the heavier breakdowns in grindcore. Drummer Nic Landry, who also contributes to lyrics, prefers the complex side of progressive metal with its intricate riffs and solos. The latest song he’s penned for Treachery is about the universe. “I think we are trying to be more progressive
When Adam Rayburn threw a free concert in his parents’ backyard for his 18th birthday in 2005, he didn’t plan on kick-starting one of the most anticipated youth events in Maple Ridge. He called it Adstock – a play on his own name and Woodstock, the most famous concert in history, and which featured legendary performances by Jimi Hendrix, Credence Clearwater Revival, and Joe Cocker, among others. “I didn’t think there would be a second Adstock, let alone ten,’ says Rayburn, who returned to help organize the event this year after a short hiatus. In the past decade, the event has featured
experimental metal band NinjaSpy, local ska stars Los Furios and hardcore punk legends DOA. When asked what gives Adstock it’s longevity, Rayburn points to it as an immediate panacea to suburban boredom. “I think Adstock helps fill the void of alternative culture in Maple Ridge, especially the all ages end of that scene.” This year, Rayburn is excited to hear Montreal bands Hellbound Hepcats and The Skinny because of the high-calibre of musicianship but is keen to see what young local metal acts Treachery and Vacant Eyes have on offer. The Hellbound Hepcats bring back the

Vocalist Kelsey Fortin growls into the mic as Treachery practice for the first real gig – a youth spot at Adstock 2014.
with maybe more spiritual stuff,” Landry adds. “Our main goal is to break metal boundaries and evoke new emotions.” When you mix the tastes of all five members, Treachery has aspects of metal-core aspects, prog, grind core, some trash and some djent. However, preparing for their first big gig means more than perfecting death growls and power chords. Treachery knows stage presence is key to an unforgettable show. “That’s what we’ve been dealing with. It’s being able to play your instruments so well, you can jump around,” said Rasmussen, who admits he and second vocalist Kelsey Fortin have an easier time throwing themselves across the stage because they don’t have instruments to worry about. “I go to a lot of metal shows. Just the energy released from those shows is indescribable.”
Months from now, Treachery could resurface with a different name, given that the band came up with its current title in less than a week after being offered a chance to play at Adstock. There were a couple of other contenders but Rasmussen says Treachery stuck because they were under the gun. “Maybe in a couple of shows we’ll come up with a cool back story,” he says with a laugh. • Treachery will be sharing Adstock’s youth spot with Vacant Eyes, another metal band from Maple Ridge. Adstock is a free concert that takes place Sunday, July 6 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Memorial Peace Park.

Kanaka Creek open mic marks five years A place where artists thrive by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
When Pam Burns began an open mic night at Kanaka Creek Coffee, she was just following her heart. The Maple Ridge resident has always run arts evenings wherever she has lived because she strongly believes in sharing the arts, especially music. The location has to be a place without televisions, somewhere you can see nature. “I really wanted to create a safe and nurturing place for musicians and poets to come and share their songs and words,” says Burns, whose event marked its fifth anniversary two weeks ago with a Bob Dylan tribute night. There are no “Simon Cowells” at Kanaka, it’s not a competition, adds Burns but “more of a sharing of souls.” Since the first open mic, there have been several musicians who’ve gone on to big and better things. Ria Jade, a student at Thomas Haney, has her own TV show while indie group Alexander France have been signed by micro-label Dangerous Pastry Records. Other bands have formed after meeting at the Kanaka open mic sessions including Celtic-inspired band Shades of Green, who played at Samz Pub on St. Patrick’s Day. Burns’ band Tiger Mountain Peasants also met at the open mic and will perform as the “house band” at this year’s Bard on The Bandstand. The open mic has also had its share of unusual acts from a Celtic harpist who played medieval tunes to “Thirsty Bill”, who wears a ten gallon hat and plays Johnny Cash songs on his guitar and four-year-old Emma Gloag, who sings thrills the crowd with her rendition of “Five Little Monkeys”. “Every week is like a wonderful adventure, and it’s not just for musicians,” says Burns. “The open e is for anyone who would like to come and listen to some live music and poetry, have a few laughs and be a part of a really lovely local community.” • Kanaka Creek Coffee’s open mic ses-

AS SEEN ON ARKETPLA CE C’S M Thanks Bruce I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Burrards: ‘A tale of two games’ Overtime tie vs Shamrocks, win over Timbermen by Nei l Corbe tt Black Press
Maple Ridge Burrards coach Chris Gill liked the way his team played in a 9-9 tie in Victoria on Friday night, but was critical of an 8-4 victory over Nanaimo on Sunday at Planet Ice. “It was a tale of two games. In the Victoria game we played disciplined and as a team for the whole game. Tonight was a little choppy a little sloppy.” The Shamrocks had defeated the Burrards 8-7 in Maple Ridge the Sunday prior, and Ridge was ready for some payback in Victoria. Gill said his guys were all business on Friday. “We try to be up for every game, but there was personal pride going into Victoria. It’s a great rink to play in, and they’ve got a packed building. The guys just played really great that game.” Curtis Dickson, the 2013 scoring leader, was back in the lineup and good for five of the nine goals. He added two assists for a seven-point night against the WLA’s top team. Riley Loewen had two goals and two assists, Jarret Davis had a goal and three assists, and Mike Mallory had a goal and two points. Dickson put the Burrards up early in overtime, but WLA OT is not sudden death, and Victoria tied it up with 1:15 to play. “Friday night was a great effort. Dickson had a great game – he put on a good show for the crowd in Victoria,” said GM Daren Fridge. “It certainly gave us confidence, knowing that each time we played them the games have been close, and they are right now the top team in the league, and certainly with the biggest payroll.” Dickson is playing for the national team in field lacrosse later this month, and has been playing with the Denver Outlaws field lacrosse team to prepare. He was forced to Miss Sunday’s game for commitments there. He will return to the Burrards later in the month, to fin-

The game was scoreless through the first period, and was tied 4-4 with only 14 minutes left to play. Then the Burrards took over. Riley Loewen scored three, Davis had four assists, and other scorers were Zack Porter, Mitchell Bannister, Spencer Evans, Andrew Murphy and Garrett McIntosh. “The defence played lights out, the goaltending played lights out like they always do, the offence just needs to commit to every shift,” said Gill. He said it can be tough for the forwards to find some chemistry with the lineup frequently changing. Ridge is 6-5-1, and will look to improve on that in their next home game, Tuesday, July 8 at 7:45 p.m. when they host the Coquitlam Adanacs. They have six games left, and
the next three straight are against the Adanacs, who have gone 4-5 so far. “The schedule gets harder – not because the schedule is harder, but because we’re playing against teams
that are fighting for playoff positions right now,” said Gill. “As you get later in the year it gets tighter. And right now the third, fourth, fifth and sixth teams are within three or four points of each other.”
“The honeymoon year,” is how James Eccles describes his first season as director of hockey development with the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association. Eccles, the association’s first full-time paid coach, signed a three-year deal. The first year – you could call it his rookie season – was been about meeting people, learning about James Eccles the culture of Ridge minor hockey, and laying the foundation for the work to come. This year, he plans to hit the ground running. Skillful players is the end goal, and the first year saw the formation of a new skill development committee, made up of past players, experienced coaches and other people with something to offer. There are 17 of them, who work directly with kids and offer coaches new ideas. “And, of course, I’m there as a resource that people can rely on,” said Eccles, noting that he will continue to offer extra sessions for players. His message is that coaches must continue to teach the basics, but if they always do so in the same ways, their message will become stale. “It can’t be the same old Xs and Os,” he said. Seeing kids fly through drills they have executed hundreds of times is not the goal. “Coaches need to learn how to challenge their players. They’ll respect you more as a person and a coach.” See Eccles, p15

On behalf of the Crohn’s and Colitis Charity Hockey Classic, we would like to thank the attendees and sponsors for their support in making our inaugural event a success. Over 5,000.00 was raised towards research to find a cure so that every child and adult with Crohn’s and Colitis can live their life to the fullest.
Taking her cuts Laura Stevens smacks a ball to left field in Sunday’s tournament game between the under-18 Ridge Meadows Pride and the White Rock Renegades. The hometown Pride took third at the U-18, U-16 and U-12 levels, while winning gold in U-14. There were 28 teams, some from as far as Alberta, in town for the weekend tourney. Neil Corbett/THE NEWS
Joined national coaching mentorship Eccles from p14
The skills group put together a skill development plan that includes offence, defence and goaltending skills. It has assembled more than 200 videos demonstrating drills that will enhance the skills they want to emphasize. Players can watch the drills on their home computers or devices before practice, and coaches can bring a tablet out onto the ice to demonstrate. The great benefit to having that sort of resource is continuity – players should continue to receive the same message, with the same approach, throughout their career in Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey. Eccles also likes to keep it fun. His approach would never intimidate a young Bambi heading onto the ice. “We need a family atmosphere – people want to come out and have fun in the game of hockey.” Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey has a proud legacy, from Boston Bruins great Cam Neely, to former Canuck Brendan Morrison to Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd, to the newest crop of NHLers, including Nashville Predators blueliner Vic Bartley. What’s missing, to some parents, is rep hockey teams that win tournaments and championships at the top level, and programs to keep the elite players from leaving for other associations. “Everyone wants to see our development increase,” said Eccles. Nobody more than him.
In May, Eccles had the honour of representing B.C. Hockey at the Hockey Canada Skill Development and National Coaching Mentorship Program weekend. He also took more training, including on-ice
sessions, and receiving further skating and skills certification. “It was a phenomenal weekend of dialogue, skill development breakdowns and on-ice execution of the new developments all at the same
time while growing my hockey career resume one more step further to the National Masters of Hockey accreditation that colleagues and mentors of mine possess within Canada,” he wrote about the weekend.

Beautiful floors that are made to last!
Benefits Of Bamboo Flooring! Bamboo is an eco-friendly, highly renewable source of material which grows much faster than traditional hardwoods. Moso Bamboo is the primary species used for the manufacturing of flooring and it can grow up to 4’ per day and 75’ in 45 days. It takes about 3-5 years for Bamboo to reach maturity. Traditional hardwoods take 20-120 years to mature. Bamboo can be harvested without replanting and in a sustainably harvested forest only 20% of the forest is harvested annually allowing for 100% harvest in a 5 year period. Bamboo naturally needs no irrigation, no fertilizers and no pesticides as it has very few pests. Trillium Bamboo Flooring is certified to meet the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council for environmental and social responsibility. BAMBOO - THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU - THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR THE FUTURE!
