Kalesnikoff celebrates 75 years TAMARA HYND Black Press
It’s all in the family at the Kalesnikoff Lumber Co. (KLC) mill in Thrums, BC. The company is celebrating 75 years in business and owner Ken Kalesnikoff recently spent a little time reflecting back on where it started and how far it has come. It began as an idea by Ken’s great uncle Koozma Kalesnikoff and his crew falling trees with handsaws and hauling logs out by horse. From a family of Russian immigrants who arrived in Canada in 1911, Koozma wanted to change the hardships of the Great Depression. In 1939 he applied for timber rights up China Creek, 10 miles south of Castlegar. Koozma and his two brothers spent eight months using axes, horses and crosscut saws to punch in their first logging road, a distance of two miles. By 1940 a sawmill was built. As the family grew, so did the business. In 1971 the current mill site in Thrums was constructed. It now directly employs 150 people. Estimates indicate that another 150 people are indirectly employed and the economic spinoffs are exponential. The various mills in the interior are pretty
much the last of the independent, familyowned mills. Ken’s philosophy is getting the “right log to the right mill”. He said we all depend on these forests. In 2008/9 they and other mills in the forest industry saw a decrease in lumber sales which Ken described as a “really bad run”. Many companies lost a lot of money. Ken kept the people at his mill as a priority, explaining that his mill doesn’t have shareholders like larger companies. “The people working for us are our biggest asset,” he said. On April 7 Ken and his staff held a barbecue to celebrate the 75 year milestone. With three barbecues going they could hardly keep up. Ken chose April 7 as it was his dad’s, Pete Jr.’s, birthday. (He passed away in 2006.) They will fire up the barbecues again for their family day in Glade on July 5. Seventy-five years in business has seen three generations at the helm. As they lead into the fourth generation, youth is apparent. The average age of Kalesnikoff employees is only 31 years old. Ken remembers his first days working at the mill began when he was just six, alongside his dad for fun on Saturdays. “My dad pointed to a pile of sawdust and

told me to clean it up. At the end of the day, he gave me $5. From then on, I was hooked.” As a 13-year-old teenager he spent every weekend working at the mill and upon graduation he worked there full time. Ken joked that his lack of post secondary education may have limited his vocabulary but he was serious about wanting his two children to have a post secondary education. His daughter Krystle Seed has a Certified Management Accountant degree and is the company’s Chief Financial Officer. Ken’s son Chris went to college for a business diploma and is the operations manager. In conversation with Ken and sales and marketing manger Griffin Augustin, they explain that one facet to their continued success is being a smaller company which has allowed them to adjust and adapt their prod-
ucts more quickly to changes in the market demand as compared to larger “spaghetti factory mills”. The second factor is their products are value added, meaning they don’t sell raw logs. Ken said he doesn’t understand raw log exports at all and sees it as a waste. KLC creates finished or near finished specialty building products like decking, siding, flooring and trim. 35 per cent of their market is a siding popular in Eastern Canada that they produce at their linear plant, Kootenay Innovative Wood Ltd. (KIW). Another specially is taruki, a 2x2 length of fir, planed on two sides, used for traditional house building in Japan. It is milled at KLC, then cut, graded and strapped in packages of six (as requested for their Japanese clients) at KIW. Currently 53 per cent of
their wood sales are from Japan. Their products are available for local sales too. One trip to

the trim, flooring and finished wood products from KIW. The Kalesnikoff family continues to plan for the future of the business and two years ago invested $2 million to retrofit the mill. “We’re in it for the long haul,” said Ken. There’s less waste than ever at the revamped mill with laser precision cutting which manages to get four different sizes of boards from one individual log as it scans the log curvature for maximum use. The sawdust goes to Avista Utilities in the United States for combustible power generation and the wood chips go to Zellstoff Celgar pulp mill in Castlegar. The wood harvested from the West Kootenay is known as Kootenay mix but the star of the show is the Interior Douglas fir. Ken said the growing conditions of the
wet belt mean the fir tree knots are smaller, “more like the size of golf balls rather than grapefruit sized” like you’d find on the coast. Among the various products they make are large structural beams. Kalesnikoff logged and milled the lumber (Interior Douglas fir) that became the iconic ‘wood wave’ roof in the Richmond Olympic Speed Skating oval for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Looking up on the hillsides of Mt. Drummond in the Rover Creek drainage and to the face of Glade Mountain it’s hard to see any signs of the cable logging and the single tree select logging they did in 2002. Ken said that is because he continues to live and work by the company motto “Take care of the land, and the land will take care of you.” “I truly believe that,” he said. “It’s my life.”

News Life-changing route… still the chosen path Jim Sinclair West Kootenay Advertiser
The African Children’s Choir will bring to Castlegar the conclusive evidence of what can be achieved when energy and talent are channelled in a positive way. A group of enthusiastic performers will demonstrate its love of entertaining at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 4 at Castlegar’s New Life Church – 602 7th street, across from Stanley Humphries Secondary School. The history of the choir goes back to 1984 when a human rights activist named Ray Barnett saw a need and acted on it. He was compelled to help the many children orphaned and starving due to a civil war in Uganda. Ray and his team took a unique approach, making a meaningful difference by impacting the lives of these children, one at a time. “Inspired by the singing of one small boy, we formed the first African Children’s Choir to show the world that Africa’s most vulnerable children have beauty,
dignity and unlimited ability, says Barnett.” Anthony Mwanguzi, now 29, is one of those whose life path has been changed by the choir and he’s using his experience to keep the program moving steadily ahead. The youngest of six children of a single father, Anthony had an outlook which looked anything but promising before he got involved with the youth performance group when he was 10. After taking part in his first tour Anthony hit the books in a big way. “The African Children’s Choir put me through school,” he described during a phone interview in late June. “Then I graduated (with a degree in economics) from university in 2010.” Feeling secure and qualified, Anthony decided to put time into mentoring new generations of choir members. “I toured with the choir three years ago, for 18 months,” he explained, “now I’m back for my second time. It’s an opportunity and I joke with the kids that, who

knows, maybe 15 years from now some of them will be chaperones for the next choir.” The group is doing four shows a week during the current one-year tour. There is no telling how things may have otherwise turned out for Anthony. His father was doing his best to provide for his children, but faced many challenges along the way, earning the equivalent of about two dollars a day. None of Anthony’s siblings had made it as far as university.
His dad took him to check out the choir;he was accepted and the rest, so far, is happy history. “I was so lucky and blessed,” stated Anthony. “My life took a turn when I joined the African Children’s Choir.” Just prior to making the West Kootenay stop Anthony and the group were in Canmore, Alberta, and were pretty sold. Let’s make them welcome and see if their Castlegar show will stand out in their memories. “Last year we did a tour in Australia

So pretty much we cover the whole globe”. “I hear British Columbia is also such a beautiful place,” said Anthony before saying goodbye. “I can’t wait to get there.” The date, time and place, again, are Friday, July 4, 7 p.m. at the New Life Church in Castlegar. No admission, but donations are welcome.

Connecting the head and the heart is the pulse of Community Foundations Canada and the life blood of a local foundation whose philanthropy has been bettering Greater Trail since 2005. The LeRoi Community Foundation of Greater Trail has gifted $190,000 over its nine years, to registered charities in Rossland, Warfield, Trail, Montrose, Fruitvale and areas A and B for a variety of projects that benefit the communities. The foundation is a member of Community Foundations Canada (CFC), a network of 191 community foundations across the country including Castlegar, Nelson, Grand Forks and Nakusp, raising awareness about the role the organizations play in keeping neighbourhoods sustainable and resilient. Over the next three years, CFC is
running a campaign called ‘Smart and Caring Communities,’ explained Louise McEwan, chairperson for the LeRoi Foundation. “The whole point of the campaign is to build on a Governor General initiative,” she said. “Leading up to the 150th Confederation of Canada in 2017, the idea is that every citizen in the country will be able to connect with a community foundation.” The CFC gathers independent charitable organizations together under one umbrella and each focuses on the need of people within a specific geographical area. Many organizations are working for better communities, noted McEwan. “But a few factors make us unique.” The LeRoi Foundation runs on an endowment fund that was created locally by financial contributions from individuals and institutions.
The funds are donated in perpetuity and invested to generate annual income which is then distributed to charities during a yearly grant cycle. The original capital is never spent, only the annual income, which is why the foundation looks to donate to long term community goals and future projects. “A good example is the Teddy Bear Picnic,” explained McEwan. “It’s been around awhile but continues to build on literacy and learning for all kids in Greater Trail.” Community foundations are long term ventures, she continued, adding, with a broad view of the community and support everything from shelter, sustenance and care for those most in need, to recreation, arts and culture and the environment. “We are here for the long haul, taking a long-term view for our communi-
ties, helping them to become resilient, resourceful and ready for the future.” The LeRoi Foundation had almost $34,000 in requests (not all registered charities) during its 2014 spring grant cycle, and each year the list of applicants grows and the range of projects diversify. “The grants we gave out this spring were not a large amount,” McEwan explained. “But I suspect that in two cases, our grants were critical to each organizations’ ability to go ahead with their project.” Grants totalling $3,750 were handed out June 10 to the Greater Trail Success by 6 (Teddy Bear Picnic); Warfield Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for new canoes; the Trail Historical Society to fund a computer upgrade; Holy Trinity Parish (Skool Aid); and a seniors iPad user group through Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy.
Angelo Golik and the Fort Sheppard Hotel Sixty-second in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
A photo that accompanied this column a few weeks ago showed some musicians outside the old Fort Sheppard Hotel at Waneta. It was taken by Fred Fransen (not Frans, as erroneously stated in the caption) probably in the 1930s and provided by his son Thor. Although most people were unidentified, the man holding a guitar was labelled “A. Golik.” John Golik of South Slocan phoned to say that was his uncle Angelo who, along with John’s parents, came to Canada from Croatia in the 1920s. John’s father found work on the recon-
struction of the Kootenay River dams and Angelo stayed with them for a while. “He had his guitar with him and would strum it,” John recalls. “I was just a toddler then. He left it in our closet and I would pick away at the strings.” He isn’t sure what Angelo was doing at the Fort Sheppard Hotel, although he apparently lived in Trail at one point. In 1937, Angelo married Helen Bourgeois of Crescent Valley. The following year he was laid off by West Kootenay Power, so the couple decided to move to Wells, where Angelo had previously worked at the Caribou Gold Quartz

mine. “We purchased a Model A Ford and drove to Wells with all our belongings,” Helen recalled in an autobiography. “It took us 2½ days, 22 flat tires, and a leaky radiator before we landed.” After a few years they moved to the coast and had a variety of occupations
ranging from farming to owning a pharmacy to running the Sasquatch Inn at Harrison Mills. However, in 1958, Angelo suffered a collapsed lung and needed surgery to remove three-quarters of it. He discovered he had contracted silicosis as a miner years earlier.

When placed in the normal position, the legroom isn’t ample but on par with others in this class. Connecting to the Cherokee is a snap with the optional 8.4-inch Uconnect system that pairs with smartphone in seconds, is very quick between commands, and has nice looking graphics. The base screen is five inches but has many of the same functionality. Behind the steering wheel, inside the instrument cluster, is another programmable screen for all the information the driver needs frequently. Drive The base 2.4L 4-cylinder with 184hp is the base engine on all trim levels. For just $1,300 any Cherokee can be equipped with the optional 3.2L V6 engine – making the walk up to this 271hp engine within reach for many buyers. In addition, this is the very first application of a 9-speed automatic anywhere in the auto industry, providing improved fuel economy and drivability. Having a chance to drive both the 4-cylinder and V6 models with the all-new 9-speed automatic, I’m torn. The V6 is the engine of choice for towing, steep mountain
runs and longer distance driving. The flip side is that the 4-cylinder is a very good in-city commuter and the lighter engine helps this Cherokee to corner, brake and manouevre better. The 9-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly, in fact I forgot it had so many cogs but it does improve fuel economy with a highway rating of 6.4L/100km with the 4-cylinder and 7.0L with the V6. Most Canadians will opt for the AWD versions thanks to our winter conditions, but here too there are more choices. Jeep has included three AWD systems. The first is a called Active Drive 1 with a selectable drive mode called Select-Terrain, for automatic, snow, mud and sand settings. The second is called Active Drive 2 and offers a two-speed mode for low speed crawling. The most aggressive system is Active Drive Lock, which comes in the off-road purpose-built Cherokee called Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is a ‘real’ Jeep; this is thanks to a locking rear differential and a host of electronic aids. The most impressive feature is the low speed crawling mode for both up and down hill tasks. Therefore, Jeep purists, yes there is a Cherokee for you. Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced. With its smooth revving Superquadro L-Twin, liquid cooled, 898 cc engine has both the grunt and purr to help you get quicker and quicker. UTVs are hot summer fun
By Ian Harwood
The explosion of utility terrain vehicles on the market the last five years has been incredible. Popularity has never been this high. The 2014 Polaris RZR XP 1000 is at the top of its class. Rarely do you see a UTV like this offered to the public. Often you would have to go to a Baja race to see these machines perform. 0-30 in 2.26 seconds and
0-50 in 5.33 seconds without any aftermarket add-ons. Wow. The XP delivers excitement at any speed. The on demand AWD system makes cornering at high speeds incredibly easy. The long travel suspension makes the bumps feel like pebbles on a highway. All the instruments are conveniently located so you can access them quickly without losing site of the trail ahead of you. I noticed how much
leg room the XP has leg. After having driven an earlier model that was always a concern. Interior The interior features a high performance tilt able steering wheel that is easy to grip and performs very well at high speeds. LED interior lights and very comfortable seats that have being beefed up to hold you in position and feature a new dry seat technology the resists moisture. They
also have sliders on them to adjust for legroom. The factory installed doors have an easy one handed security latch and offer an optional accessory lower door section which I recommend to purchase right away. This keeps a lot of debris of your legs. Having driven many off-road vehicles in my career and in many challenging conditions, I found UTVs to be an extension to the off-road experience.

Make no mistake, the Kia Sorento is a high quality, fully functional and spacious sport utility vehicle that can affordably navigate Kootenay life. Canadians journalists overwhelmingly said so. And we know so.

You can go places that you would not normally attempt because of road conditions or overgrown vegetation that limits most vehicles without extensive body damage. In this age of ultra-short product lifecycles where a threemodel-year run unchanged is an eternity, it’s tough to imagine the same basic design being produced for three separate decades or more. Here are six cars that all had tortoise-like life spans: 1962-80 MGB: The MG was the sports car North Americans loved first, with U.S. servicemen bringing back rakish MG TCs from the UK. The MGB was the first “modern” sports car from MG that included features like actual roll-up windows and (from 1967 on) a fully synchronized
manual transmission. When it was introduced in 1962, few thought that it would be the last MG sold in the U.S. Sadly, that’s how it turned out. After a titanic 18-year run, the B exited the world little changed from the way it entered. The engine and body shell were the same basic units that were being built during the Kennedy administration. 1954-83 Jeep CJ-5: The CJ-5 was actually a variant of the Korean War-era military Jeep. Far more suited to civilian use than the WWII-era Jeep, the CJ-5 was a hot seller for American Motors, which took over Jeep’s parentage from the old Kaiser automo-

Cars that wouldn’t die continued on page A10
They elected to let the post-war Germans keep the funny little car, and the rest is history. Although the last Super Beetle Cabriolets were sold in the U.S. from 1980-81, production of the basic Beetle sedan continued in Mexico until 2006. 1964-89 Porsche 911 (aircooled): The 911 celebrated its 50th anniversary recently, but to be fair, we cut this off in 1989, the last year for the original torsionbar suspension, air-cooled 911. It’s simply amazing how little of the basic car changed over the course of 25 years, from the primitive heating system, to most of the glass, roof and doors, as well as the basic engine design. 911 fans seemed just fine with that as the car outlived its intended successor — the 928. 1968-82 C3 Corvette: Cor-
1966 Jeep CJ-5
vettes through their history had been on a somewhat fast and furious development pace ever since Zora Arkus-Duntov decided to show Chevy how to make it into a real V-8-powered sports car in 1955. The second generation, or C2,
Corvette (which many argue was the best of the classic Corvettes) was only around from 1963-67. The car that replaced that version, however, hung around for 14 long years. To be fair, these were tough years for GM, which
was hammered by imports and two fuel crises. There were several mid-engine design studies that came perilously close to replacing the C3, but it never happened, and the same basic design lasted from LBJ to Reagan.
1960-82 Checker Marathon: One of the few purpose-built taxi cabs ever sold in the U.S., they were infinitely nicer to ride in than the clapped-out Ford Crown Vics that seem to serve as cabs everywhere in the U.S. Similar in roominess to the classic London taxis still in service, with their handy fold-down jump seats, the Marathon also added a useful trunk to the mix. Although the vast majority were used as cabs, ultra-practical eccentrics did from time to time buy Marathons as civilian transportation. Twentytwo years wasn’t long enough. Angelo Golik and the Fort Sheppard Hotel continued from page A4
He later tried farming again (they raised rabbits until he discovered he was allergic to them) but was in and out of hospital until his death in Vancouver in 1963 at age 58. Helen went to work at the Langley post office and then Cloverdale Paint and a
hardware store before retiring. She died in 1999 at age 85. They had no children. John recalls Angelo “was quite a kidder, quite a character. He had a great sense of humor, as did Helen.” John also identified another person in the photo, his uncle’s friend John Jovanovic, whom he recalls taking the bus
to visit in Rossland. Jovanovic worked at the Trail smelter and had a wife, son, and daughter. One other correction to the original story: a newspaper ad for the Fort Sheppard hotel actually appeared in the Trail Daily Times from August 24 to September 4, 1928, not the Victoria Colonist.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week July 04, 2014
Tip of the Week: Happy Birthday! Not just someone but millions of people hear that phrase every day. As common as it is, it remains quite special to the person who hears it. As well, it is not a reduction of Astrology; it is simply a reminder that we each embody the archetypes ‘our way’. I have met people whose birth date and even year let alone time is uncertain. By using Astrology I have had a lot of success helping them not only to determine their birth time. Although not necessary for a deep and effective Reading, knowing the time certainly does sharpen the picture. Deciphering when someone is born can be done because we each have a destiny and the timing of it is very measurable indeed, when one is well versed and practiced in the fine art of Astrology. Basically, character and destiny are tightly woven. In fact, it can be said that it is our basic destiny to be who we individually are, to live authentically. Implied in this statement is: attunement, rhythm and flow. Due to the influences of free will, we can choose to tune-in and live authentically and fulfill our destiny this way. However, free will can also lead us off our path, due to adhering solely to outer realities, pressures, rhythms, trends and influences in general. A short while ago I heard a man on CBC radio saying that ‘doing what you love for a living is bad advice’. He asserted that we should not necessarily endeavor to love or even like our work. I certainly disagree. This tendency to sell-out to the market place may have its merits in the shorter term and may even be practically necessary and wise. Yet, the longer term implications of proverbially placing the round peg in the square hole is the source of its own long list of stresses and related issues. With awareness, which Astrology provides and which can include deep personal insight (when the focus is person-centered) and timing, we can successfully guide us to ‘work towards doing what we love’. This means we can strategically do what we feel we must but steadily and deliberately aim for doing what we love, even if it takes many years. As mentioned, what we do is such an important feature of who we are, when it comes to living authentically. PS Happy Birthday United States and all of you too, born on the 4th of July!.
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
The seeds of new growth should be showing some sprouts by now. These will be most evident close to home. The challenge is to move forward, to advance. Trying to perpetuate patterns, especially in how you relate to family members and perhaps superiors at work, could prove problematic. Nurture a more cooperative attitude and approach. An extra busy cycle continues. The good news is that it implies expansion. This flow will continue for a few more weeks anyway. But you will feel both the inspiration and opportunity to play more soon. The window to do so will last a while, even up to a couple of months. But get it in because you will be busier again by late summer. Intimate gatherings with family and friends are a likely source of happiness now. You feel extra enthusiastic, expressive and playful. This energy pattern could also manifest as artistic inspiration. In any case, you should feel more confident and content than you have for a while. Some lingering health issues are the sobering part of the plot. Need a miracle? Contact me, I know of a valuable resource you may like… a lot.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
You are in a pioneering and expansive mood. It is giving you the confidence to take a few risks, to go big. Yet you may also feel a bit moody and edgy. This might be best applied to constructive projects. Be careful not to allow this edge to produce unwanted cuts, especially among friends. Balance a close attention to detail with taking a diplomatic and open-minded approach in your communications.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
You are in a rather deep and emotional mood. At best you are able to ‘feel with your heart and think with your mind’. It may also be the source of a profound sense of renewed possibilities. Still, you may feel the need to lay claim to hidden reserves of faith. Yet you should feel a deep sense of renewed confidence over the coming weeks.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
A renewed sense of joy and confidence at home, among friends and at work is yours to enjoy now. At least one of these sectors is feeding the others. This upliftment is affording you the opportunity to reassess your situation in a more positive light. It may even be the source of inventiveness. Take flight upon new wings of confidence.

An exciting and stimulating, if hectic and tiring, pace continues. Yet there is good reason to say you are having fun. Fortunately as well, you are feeling stronger these days, as if you have passed through a dark night this past winter and spring. So you have entered an expansive cycle and it will lead to a broadening of your horizons and friendships too. You are in a philosophical, adventurous and altogether spirited mood. This has been true for many months generally but the emphasis is now peaking. You have been challenged to overcome inner fears early this year and it may have been tough but there is reason to say you are getting stronger by the day. If you are not feeling mightier yet you will soon…. Who has what you want and especially what you need? Deciphering between these two is the first step, ideally with emphasis on needs. Then make a list or people and resources. Step 3 is to follow through and ask. Perhaps what you need is divine help. Prayers do work and calling on angels is very wise. Operators are waiting for your call.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
A rich and probably rewarding series of stimulations on relationship fronts continues. There remains the element of renovation but that cycle will come to completion by month’s end. The focus for repairs and improvements may extend to family and friends as much as home and garden. Either way, aim to give more and make deliberate improvements in your communications.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
Creative communications and networking is the key to your professional and social success now. Weaving in more warmth, empathy and Aquarian friendliness is the call. This is also a playful cycle so be sure to tuck in plenty of that. It is also a time to push through resistances and persevere wherever this affirmation applies.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
Enjoying fun and games with family and friends continues to be in the spotlight, amidst an otherwise ambitious mood. Balancing the two will prove especially rewarding. Projects and expressions which reveal your beauty and originality are especially favoured. A positive practical and creative momentum initiated now will prove extra valuable over the coming weeks and months.
