14 year-old Isaac Silver-Mack takes an impressive turn in the Businessmen's Cow Ride!

Locals steal the show at 29th Annual Valley Ridge Riders Rodeo BY JOY MACKAY The rain held off, for the most part, and smiles prevailed at the 29th Annual Bella Coola Rodeo, hosted by the Valley Ridge Riders. This year’s celebration last Friday afternoon, and the small amount of rain that fell didn’t dampen the spirits of contestants or the general public who attended the open air dances on Friday and Saturday evenings, enjoy-

ing upbeat live music by the ‘Johnson Brothers.’ Reviews of this year’s band were unanimously positive. On Saturday and Sunday, the action got underway in the afternoon with rodeo performances co-approved by the British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA) and Western Indian Rodeo and Exhibition Association (WIREA). For the third year in a row, the rodeo format featured two

full one-day rodeos. This format offers greater incentive to contestants to make the long trip through the Chilcotin and down the “Hill”. In addition to the standard events that make up the regular rodeo performances, the Valley Ridge Riders hosted a number of novelty events, encouraging local participation. Events to which local spectators have become accustomed include the very popu-

lar Businessman’s Cow Ride, which saw more entries and more scored rides than ever. Jacob Sinclair, perhaps better known as Jim and CJ Dixon’s son-in-law, won the event and the buckle, with what was described by veteran judge Cam Williams as a “heck of a ride”. Sunday’s Wild Cow Milking was also won by a local team: Vickie and Brody Tuck, accompanied by Darius Krugar took top honours for this action-

packed event. It’s always fun for the crowd to see local contestants do well, and Brody’s return to the Valley for the weekend made for some extra fun for the whole family. Other local contestants that put in impressive performances and took home some prize money were Annika Granander, Rachel Chatham, Vickie Tuck, and Kaitlyn Absatz. SEE

The Businessmen's Cow Ride was popular with locals this year! Matt Gulka takes a turn.

Businessman’s Cow Ride sees more entries than ever from page 1

While the Valley Ridge Riders is comprised of only a small group of riders these days, that small group is competitive at any BCRA rodeo. A Calf Scramble was held for the kids on each day of rodeo action, along with the very popular ‘Cow Patty Bingo.’ A few more lucky locals went home with bigger-thanaverage smiles as a result of these novelty events. Stock Contractors Dale Dejonckeere and Barbie MacDonald, of D&B Rodeo Stock, made sure veterans and “newbies” alike had the best possible stock and were safe throughout the weekend. Four British Columbia Barrel Racing Association (BCBRA) races were sponsored by the Club over the weekend. The inclusion of BCBRA races helps to encourage more barrel racers to attend for the weekend rodeo, where they can also fill out their race card with BCBRA qualifiers, prior to that association’s Finals in early September. Two races were held as part of Friday’s gymkhana, and two more rounded out Monday’s ‘Buckles, Barrels and Bucks.’ The top rider in the increasingly pop-

ular Calcutta Steer Riding was Denton Spears, purchased by Bob Leneve. As Denton was traveling with the Leneve family for the weekend, it all made for a very happy camp on Monday evening. While recent years have seen a decline in attendance by bull riders, this year

saw a number of top riders stay through the weekend, and so a Calcutta Bulla-Rama was held after all. Levi Lawlor, purchased by Mitch Lorimer, took top honours in the Bull Riding. Veteran rodeo announcer and auctioneer Brian Baldry called the

action, while his wife Nancy photographed events, and their young son, Latigo, bucked out on his first calf. Of course, a full weekend of excitement and entertainment requires a lot of work behind the scenes, and the VRR Rodeo is no exception. While a few of

the participants are semi-professionals who make at least part of their living in rodeo, the vast majority of participants are amateurs and volunteers, and it takes a lot of volunteers to put on a show of this caliber! From local business and individuals who sponsor events

with cash donations, to the many people pulling shifts in the concession, beer garden, and at the entrance gates, to the local and almostlocal folks, who keep the stock moving and gates working on the backside, each and every role is important. Many people

put the weekend together, and many more enjoy the final result. The Valley Ridge Riders thanks them all! Without the support of the community, and the dedication of rodeo families, it couldn’t be done. Congratulations to the Valley Ridge Riders on another

The CCRD and the Nuxalk Nation have come together to sign a new cost sharing agreement addressing one of the biggest problems facing the community: the management of solid waste. Within the Bella Coola Valley, solid waste management is primarily funded through a tax levy on local property owners, a contribution by the Nuxalk Nation, and base funding from the CCRD through a provincial grant. Changing demographics and

a budget shortfall due to environmental regulations, made it an opportune time for both parties to work together to arrive at a new agreement. The result was dramatic increase in the Nuxalk Nation’s annual contribution, from $30,000 to $100,000. This brings the Nuxalk contribution in line with the recent increases to the tax levy, and paves the way for improved management of landfill and recycling operations. But this didn’t happen without a lot of work. Capital Projects Manager Archie Pootlass and Chief Councilor Wally Webber were instrumental in getting the necessary representatives from Aboriginal Affairs to survey and the inspect the landfill themselves, leading to the obvious conclusion that more needed to be done. The CCRD is extremely pleased with the new agree-

ment, citing an improved relationship between the two governments. “We really feel we are partners in this agreement,” said CAO Darla Blake. “We both are concerned about protecting our environment and this agreement signifies an important step in that direction.” One thing that both governments want to emphasize is the new focus on recycling. “It was very important to the Nuxalk Nation that the recycling take top priority,” said Public Works Manager Ken McIlwain. “They are very keen on waste diversion.” The new recycling facility at Thorsen Creek has been popular, and the CCRD is confident that usage will only increase. “Our goal is to be cost neutral, and we are not there yet,” said McIlwain. “But our next step is to focus on public education and hopefully get even more residents recycling.”

Federal government gives green light to Enbridge BY CAITLIN THOMPSON Prime Minister Stephen Harper has given his approval to Enbridge’s controversial Northern Gateway pipeline project. The announcement came last week amid months of speculation on whether or not Harper’s conservative government would accept the decision made by the Joint Review Panel last December. The Joint Review Panel approved the project, subject to 209 conditions, after years of hearings across the province. The project has been met with venomous opposition from First Nations whose traditional territories encompass the pipeline route, and from environmental and citizens groups across the country. Neither Harper nor his Natural Resources Minister has commented directly on the project, choosing rather to issue a press release on the subject. In a statement, federal Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford said approval is subject to Enbridge satisfying 209 conditions – including further consultations with First Nations – laid down by the review panel. He noted the company must obtain construction permits from the B.C. government, which has laid

Action camps like the Unist'ot'en camp along the pipeline route have received little media attention despite being a constant presence in the region for four years. out its own five conditions the company must meet. “The proponent clearly has more work to do in order to fulfill the public commitment it has made to engage with aboriginal groups and local communities along the route,” Mr. Rickford said. Enbridge is proposing a 1, 200 kilometre twin-pipeline system to carry tar sands oil from Edmonton to Kitimat. Supertankers would then be employed to carry the oil to markets in Asia. Opponents of the project say the risk of a land or marine-

based spill are far too high, while proponents argue that the project is a necessity for Canada’s economic future. Opposition is especially high along Enbridge’s proposed pipeline route, which is currently under construction for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) Pacific Trails Pipeline. While Pacific Trails has failed to attract the attention of the Northern Gateway project, those situated along the route claim Pacific Trails is laying the groundwork for Northern Gateway and is causing significant

environmental damage. The Unist’ot’en Camp, situated in Wet’suwet’en territory near Smithers, BC, has been grossly underreported in the mainstream media despite having maintained a consistent presence in the area for almost four years. Spokespersons Freda Huson and Dini Ze Toghestiy (who visited Bella Coola last year seeking support from the Nuxalk Nation) have stated their total opposition to all pipeline projects in their traditional territories.

“The Provincial and Federal governments are illegal because they don’t have jurisdiction in our peoples territory. We have never signed any treaties, this land is unceded,” stated Huson. Huson’s statement may resonate more strongly now in light of the recent decision regarding the Tsilhqot’in peoples Supreme Court battle to have their rights and title recognized in their traditional territory. In its decision, Canada's top court agreed that a semi-nomadic tribe can claim land title even if it uses it only some of the time. The court also established what title means, including the right to the benefits associated

with the land and the right to use it, enjoy it and profit from it. Members of the Unist’ot’en Camp have long maintained that Pacific Trails is blazing the route for Enbridge. A joint project of the Apache Corporation and Chevron, the Pacific Trails pipeline is a 480 kilometre pipeline carrying 10 million tonnes of LNG per year from Summit Lake, B.C. to the proposed LNG facility site in Kitimat. The government gave its approval of the project in April of 2012, stating that it would foster economic growth across the province. Environmental groups and First Nations have charac-

terized Enbridge as a ‘dead’ project, declaring that they are ready for a fight. Enbridge CEO Al Monaco welcomed federal approval but agreed the company has much to do. Enbridge claims it has agreements with 26 aboriginal communities along the pipeline route, but none has stepped forward to be identified. “As far as we’re concerned Northern Gateway is a dead project,” said Art Sterritt, executive director of Coastal First Nations, an umbrella group representing nine communities, “and we will treat it as such and do whatever we can to make sure that it never moves forward.”

Local businesses to host Save the Discovery Coast Ferry Fundraiser Press Release The fight to Save the Discovery Coast Ferry is heating up. Now that the summer months are upon us people all up and down the coast, as well as into the interior, are feeling the full impact of the reckless decision to cut Route 40. Some accommodation businesses are reporting a 90 percent drop in bookings. This reduction in client numbers is going to have a huge impact on our valley. Not only will there be fewer tourists spending dollars, but the businesses that rely on tourists will also be spending less. This reduction in spending will not just be on goods and services either, but will also be in terms of investing in infrastructure and the future.
