Summer school cancelled

Those signed up will get priority to make up courses by Ne i l Cor be tt staff reporter

Summer school is the latest collateral damage of the labour dispute between B.C. teachers and the provincial government. There were 705 kids who took summer school in the Maple RidgePitt Meadows school district last year, but on Wednesday the board announced that it will be cancelled this year. The B.C. Public School Employers Association, which negotiates on behalf of the province, had asked the Labour Relations Board to declare summer school an essential service. The LRB ruled the essential service designation will apply only to students who have failed a Grade 10-12 course, and where the course is not available for the student next year. See Education, p9

Bridge tolls climb a nickel It’s been five years since Golden Ears opened by P h i l M e l nychuk staff reporter

Phil Melnychuk/THE NEWS

It was expected that 50,000 vehicles a day would cross the Golden Ears Bridge.

Just when you got used to paying $6 to cross the Golden Ears Bridge there and back, the tolls are jumping again. Starting July 15, the price for a transponder-equipped car jumps a nickel to $3.05, and by another dime to $6.10 for small trucks.

If you don’t have a transponder for your car and are not a registered video user, the toll goes up a nickel to $4.30. The yearly increases aren’t causing Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows residents to find another way to get to Surrey or Langley, said Sany Zein, director of infrastructure with TransLink. “We don’t find the annual CPI adjustment is affecting the crossing over the bridge.” Zein said the average number of daily crossings over the Fraser River, in both directions, is now 31,000.

Zein said that number, for the first six months of this year, is about four per cent higher than for the same period in 2013. In the last two years, the number of crossings has jumped a total of about six per cent. “We’ve seen about 30 to 40 per cent total growth since we started on the bridge,” Zein said. This July marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Golden Ears Bridge, an $808-million replacement for the Albion ferry that was shut down within weeks of the bridge opening.

Tolls charged on cars, trucks and motorcycles bring in about $39 million a year to TransLink, which is then paid to Golden Crossing General Partnership, owned by Bilfinger Berger, the construction company that built the bridge. As well, TransLink pours in another $35-million to $40 million annually from its general revenues to Golden Crossing partnership to top up the payments. The six-kilometre bridge will be paid off by 2041. See Bridge, p9

Big turnout for Ridge’s Canada Day event Maple Ridge residents show their Canadian pride at downtown park by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

n estimated 6,000 people donned red and white Maple Leaf T-shirts, tiaras, top hats and temporary tattoos while attending Canada Day celebrations in Memorial Peace Park. It’s a pretty solid estimate, explained BIA executive director Ineke Boekhorst, because the operators at the Haney Farmers Market used a clicker counter to keep track of the people who visit their bazaar. They clicked off 3,800, and the estimate was adjusted upward for those who didn’t go into the market area. “It was fantastic – of course, we had awesome weather,” she said. “I’ve never seen it that busy – I’ve been on that committee for 10 or 12 years. “It’s a small-town Canada Day celebration, and the community really comes out, and it’s all free.” The weather was hot enough to melt an ice cream bar in minutes, as the temperature soared from a forecast 25 C up to 33 C. Boekhorst said the only thing missing was having the fire department spraying water for kids to run through to cool off. The BIA offered a business market alongside the farmer’s market for the first time, and Boekhorst said the 27 vendors, both BIA members and home-based businesses, were busy and happy. “That was really, really successful.” The centre of the park was operated by Youth Services, which had mini golf, face painting, sack races and other fun events for kids. There was an official flag raising ceremony attended by local politicians, and the Royal

Canadian Legion colour party and RCMP officers in red serge gave it some pomp. The Mounties stayed behind and posed for photos with families. The master of ceremonies for the day was Fred Armstrong, the district’s manager of corporate communications, and he announced on the day that it was the biggest crowd the event has ever seen. “It has grown quite substantially,” he said on Wednesday, “and it was huge this year. “People really came out, and got engaged.”

He said the entertainment bandstand has allowed the event to offer more musical acts and dancing groups, and “it has added a nice polish to the event.” Armstrong remarked that Canadians are now celebrating Canada Day with a similar fervour to the way Americans mark July 4. His theory is that when Canada won the gold medal in hockey at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, there was a huge, spontaneous celebration by people wearing red and white Team Canada jerseys. He was surprised by

what he called “unabashed national pride. “That was the game-changer for these kinds of events,” he said. It was easy to rally the same passion for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and at live sites in Fraser Valley communities. People have their Maple Leaf fashions and accessories, and are just waiting for the chance to put them on. Armstrong said there are no new plans for next year’s event yet, but the potential is clear. “All the energy is there to take it up a notch.”

Maple Ridge student will be carrying the flag at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship competition in California. Samuel Robertson Technical (SRT) Grade 11 student Anthony Wock’s test scores in PowerPoint made him tops in Canada. The Maple Ridge company CCI Learning Solutions teaches the course, and will be sponsoring Wock’s trip to Anaheim, and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, on July 27-30 for the World Championships. There are cash prices of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 for

first, second and third places, as well as medals and certificates. It is a truly global competition, and last year’s champions came from the UK, Nepal, Macao, China, Taiwan and the Czech Republic. The 344,000 candidates competed in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, in both 2010 and 2007 versions. Samuel Robertson Technical started offering a Microsoft Academy program on a trial basis last year, in partnership with CCI Learning Solutions. “It offers them a better chance of getting a job after high school,” said SRT’s Brad Dingler, an IT teacher. Wock has a black belt in the Korean martial art Taekwondo, and since his landmark certification, has gone to get a black belt in Power Point 2010. He was the first student in B.C.

You look

to receive a Microsoft Office specialist certificate from a provincial high school in 2013. This year he became the first high school student to win the national championship, and completed the 50-minute test in just 17 minutes, with a perfect score. Dingler explained that the certification demonstrates that a student has a basic understanding of the software, and then they can become experts and masters. These courses are typically offered by post secondary institutions in Canada, but in the U.S. they more widespread. He calls Wock’s achievement “a pretty big deal.” “We are seeing more young students from high schools showing their potential,” said Malcolm Knox, president and CEO of CCI Learning, comments. “These skills are required by all students

Man found dead in SUV The B.C. Coroner’s Service is investigating the death of a man Monday in downtown Maple Ridge. Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to a Chevron gas station on Lougheed Highway near 223rd around 11 a.m. after the driver of a SUV suffered a medical emergency. Paramedics with the B.C. Ambulance Service were unable to revive the man, who passed away at the scene. Police said he died of natural causes. RCMP officers remained at the gas station until the coroner arrived to remove the man’s body.

Armed robbery at Pitt grocery store staff reporter

An armed man made off with a loot of cash after robbing a Pitt Meadows grocery store on Canada Day. Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to the Great Canadian Superstore at Meadowtown Centre around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday after two employees were threatened by a thief. The man ordered two women, who were working, into an office that contained the store’s safe and forced them to open it. He fled with an unknown amount of money. “This brazen robbery has certainly alarmed and traumatized the two employees of the

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

No need to speed It just got quicker to get around parts of British Columbia. On Wednesday the provincial government announced new, higher speed limits on 35 sections of rural highways, with more promised for later in the summer. In total, drivers will be able to put their gas foot down a little harder on 1,300 kms of blacktop. The Ministry of Transport says serious crashes on provincial highways have decreased 28 per cent since 2003. Cars are safer, drivers have more technology and education at their disposal. Enforcement is better. While lead-footed drivers and owners of sports cars may celebrate the decision, not everyone is happy. The RCMP who patrol many of those highways and attend to the carnage that sometimes results from excessive speeding don’t like the new limits. ICBC is worried about safety and vows to monitor those stretches of highway with the new limits to see if there’s an effect on crash rates and severity. Truckers aren’t pleased with the new limits either. The B.C. Trucking Association says it will direct their drivers to stick to their current speed policies because the faster a fully loaded truck travels, the longer it takes to stop. Also, the faster a truck moves, the more fuel it consumes. That money comes out of the pockets of truckers and, ultimately, consumers. To alleviate safety concerns, the province has said it will adjust speed limits to weather conditions on some of those stretches of highway. Too many drivers already treat speed limits as a suggestion, rather than law. Now their threshold has just been raised. – Black Press Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Liberals don’t like public education No lie can live forever – Thomas Carlyle, Victorian writer.

I

n his March on Washington in 1968, Martin Luther King woke up mainstream America when he declared the emancipation of Negroes by Abraham Along the Fraser Lincoln was “a bad Jack Emberly check marked insufficient funds.” After 100 years, Negroes were still crippled by poverty, injustice and discrimination. But, “Carlyle was right,” said King, “no lie can live forever.” The words resonate in B.C. as the Liberals portray teachers as greedy and demean their union as “the common denominator” in decades of turmoil. Lies. Class size and composition language – illegally removed from contract – can’t be abandoned. In the ’80s, because teachers fought for it, they leveled the playing ground for all students. The six o’clock news never mentions this. You get sound bites about money with no analysis for truth. An exception occurred May 27, when Ken Georgetti, former president of the Canadian Labour Congress, talked to CBC radio host Steven Quinn. Teacher demands were altruistic and sensible. “Teachers are bargaining for the quality of the product that produces future scien-

Q

uestion of the week:

tists, graduates, the doctors, the lawyers in our society,” said Georgetti, who then reminded us of a truth we have generally chosen to ignore. “You don’t see other unions bargaining for that sort of thing.” The Liberals don’t value public education. Since 2002, they’ve cut 1,400 special education teachers, 3,500 teaching positions, and closed 200 schools. Add to this carnage, music programs, and English as Second Language. In 2013, Susan Lambert told me it would take $3.3 billion to return funding to 2002 levels, according to school district secretary treasurers. That’s generations of adults denied equal educational opportunity. Last week, a picketer told me she got a parent to understand what that means. “Funding for kids in B.C. schools is $1,000 less per student,” she said. “Would you let someone steal $1,000 from your child.” “Class size has nothing to do educational outcomes,” says Education Minister Peter Fassbender. Not true, says researcher, Diane Schanzenbach. Her 2014 report, Does Class Size Matter, proves that reduced numbers benefit every student. In a June 25 open letter Christy Clark from, former Richmond school superintendent Don Lintott says it again. “The provision of specialist teachers who can support students with these educational needs has been eroded beyond belief over the last two terms of the Liberal government ... not only are students with special needs being shortchanged, but

Do you think public education is an essential service? Yes: 69% – No: 31%

regular classroom students are also not getting the teacher time they deserve. Without some framework to put limits on the number of special needs students allocated to classrooms, all students in our public schools are disadvantaged.” Lintott accuses the Liberals government of dishonesty in bargaining and arrogance. “You say you are trying to find a settlement in this labor dispute, yet you have proposed wording that could never be agreed upon by the teachers of B.C. I am appalled the government would include a clause that seeks to set aside the ruling of two B.C. Court decisions and the likely future decision of the Supreme Court of Canada.” The province wants to include wording such as, “if either party is dissatisfied with the outcome, either party may give written notice to the other of termination of the collective agreement.” To Lintott, that signals an unwillingness to abide by the rule of law in this country. Normally, there’s good-bye ceremonies at the end of the school year, proper closure for the year, retiring teachers thanked by parents, students. Not this year. “Truth crushed to earth will rise again,” said King, using a line from poet William Cullen Bryant. The Liberals don’t like teachers or public education, they don’t bargain honestly, ignore facts and the law, and don’t care about kids and families. No lie can live forever. Jack Emberly is a retired teacher, local author and environmentalist.

THE NEWS/letters Heading further east to shop

Editor, The News: Re: Businesses shifting west in Maple Ridge (The News, June 25). I am beginning to feel like a broken record, but doesn’t it seem ironic that housing is moving eastward (west of 240th Street) and businesses are moving westward (207th to 203rd streets). All of this development on Lougheed Highway will only encourage the road to become like Kingsway in Burnaby, with slow-moving traffic accessing businesses and constant traffic lights. Already it is quicker for those of us in Albion and Thornhill to drive to the grocery store in Mission than it is to the ones in west Maple Ridge. As Lougheed Hwy. continues to become more congested, I simply take my shopping dollars and head to Mission and Abbotsford as they are much easier to access – and the gas is cheaper. It is time the district starts working towards getting some shopping here in the east. Ian Strachan Maple Ridge

Accounting for all that money Editor, The News: Re: A call to freeze Pitt council salaries (The News, June 18). I guess the taxpayers of Pitt Meadows should be happy to read that the mayor and council members are planning to reduce their expenses claims for traveling and attending meetings. It is about time. Joe Six Pack does not have these privileges; he pays for his own lunches and gas mileage when going to work. Also, Canada Revenue would never allow these types of expense claims. And thank you, as we have just found out that nine employees of the City of Pitt Meadows are earning in excess of $100,000 a year, plus expenses.

I guess they are not complaining. And two assistant fire chiefs? Two fire safety technicians? Are there that many fires in Pitt Meadows? What do all these people do? Also, what is a business analyst and a manager of legislative services. That sounds all pretty high class for this tiny town. Are nice, fat wages the reason that some property taxes have increased in excess of five per cent, while burning permits in Pitt Meadows are costing $90, whereas they are $25 in Maple Ridge. Furthermore, why would any Metro director claim gas mileage when they are receiving $355 for attending meet-

ings, which last less than four hours? And how about getting paid $710 for attending meetings lasting over four hours? Where can I find a job to receive this type of pay? Expense claims for politicians and bureaucrats have long been a thorn in the average taxpayers’ side. Conveniently, guidelines it seems, have never ever been established. Well, it is high time that they are created. We, the people and taxpayers, have to record and document every penny of expenses when filing our income tax. Lance Felgnar Pitt Meadows

Mixing together as well as bitumen and water Editor, The News: Re: Science flip flop (News Views, July 2). I applaud your recent editorial stating how the Conservative government uses the word science as justification only when it suits its agenda. The words Stephen Harper government, science and environment are oxymorons, mixing together as well as bitumen and water will if a tanker goes

down off our West Coast. Also, how apropos you publish a letter from MP Randy Kamp in the same issue using the word science to justify his government’s approval of Northern Gateway. As Northern Gateway will be crossing hundreds of fish-bearing watersheds, perhaps Mr. Kamp, as parliamentary secretary to fisheries, could explain why the authority to assess the environmen-

tal impact for this project was taken away from the department of fisheries and oceans, which, up to this current government, was mandated to protect our fisheries and watersheds, and given to the Nation Energy Board, the mandate for which is to promote our natural resources, apparently with no regard to the impacts on our environment. Celebrating 100 years

A Maple Ridge mother says proposed service cuts to three bus routes are going to make it tougher for her to get to work. Autumn O’Rourke has to take the C43/44 to get from her home in northwest Maple Ridge to her job in Maple Meadows Business Park. “I don’t drive and I have a daughter turning three this year.” While her parents help with picking up her daughter, O’Rourke also relies on the bus to get to appointments at Ridge Meadows Hospital and

for parenting courses at the Family Education Centre. She has a disability and tried three or four times to get her driver’s licence, but has never progressed past the learner’s permit. “It was hard for me to get this job. It took me a number of years to get it.” She works from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. so it would mean only hourly bus service when she gets off work. “In the summer time, it’s not a big deal. But come winter time, it’s a bit of a hassle to walk in the rain and every thing.” TransLink is considering reducing the C43/44 Haney Place-Maple Meadows-Meadowtown

service from every half hour to hourly during non-rush hour times. It’s proposing the same for the C47 AlouettePort Haney Station-Haney Place route. The bus com- O’Rourke pany says the move will increase efficiency and save resources. During off-peak times, the three shuttles each only carry between three and eight people per trip on vehicles that have capacity for 24, TransLink says. Ru s h - h o u r service will remain at every half hour. “I can get there fine. I just have to leave a bit earlier.” But if she misses the bus connection leaving work, she’ll be standing there for an hour. “To get home will be that much harder.” TransLink said it held public consultation on the changes to several bus routes in Metro Vancouver last February. Its 2014 Bus Service Optimization report shows results from consultation of other route cuts, but doesn’t mention any results of consultation done in Maple Ridge. The C47 community shuttle is not mentioned in the report. Maple Ridge is also not listed in the appendix of the report that shows advertisements taken out telling people of the proposed changes. However, consultation usually doesn’t take place when only bus route frequencies or times are being changed, TransLink said by e-mail. As a result, consultation didn’t take place in Maple Ridge because no route changes were planned. “The decision about the routes will be communicated to the public in August in the same way all service optimization activities are communicated – through advertisements, media relations, social media, and on the website,” TransLink said. O’Rourke said many vulnerable people rely on the routes to get to medical appointments. “This just goes against encouraging people to drive less and take public transit instead.”

‘Two sides too far apart for mediator’ Education from front

“Of course, all students can take courses next year,” noted Wes Reamsbottom, the principal of summer school in the district. He said there are 30 teachers and CUPE support staff hired for summer school. “The team that was assembled was a great team, and would have had a great impact.” In a letter to parents, the board explained that summer school has been cancelled. “We will be working with affected students individually to minimize the impact of this cancellation and develop a plan for the fall,” said the letter, which is signed by acting superintendent Laurie Meston. Reamsbottom said that on the slim chance

that negotiations are concluded by June 7, which means wrapping them up this weekend, the district would still have its summer school team ready to work, and it could go ahead. That appears unlikely. On Wednesday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher concluded the two sides are too far apart on wages and working conditions for mediation to be effective. Reamsbottom said students who have failed necessary courses will be moved to the front of the line in course selection next year, to ensure they get their prerequisites. “The goal is to accommodate students and meet their needs.” Between July 2 and 3, Reamsbottom has

already heard from 200 people. Some were frustrated, some supportive. “Most have ended positively. They just want to know what’s happening,” said Reamsbottom. “The situation is bigger than our district, it’s affecting the entire province.” Many school boards were announcing the cancellation of summer school this week. The board’s letter to parents also addresses report cards – there will be no final marks for Grade 8-9 students. There are final marks for students in Grades 10-12, though not the full reports parents generally see. The distribution of the report cards will vary from school to school, and parents are advised to

check their school’s website for information. BCPSEA has proposed a seven per cent pay increase over six years, plus a $1,200 signing bonus with a deadline that expired June 30. The BCTF has countered eight per cent over five years with a proposed $5,000 bonus, to make up for a year the union has worked under an expired contract. BCPSEA has calculated the cost of the union’s position on class size and composition at $1.67 billion. That dispute has been the subject of a series of court actions and the B.C. Court of Appeal is expected to rule on it in the fall. • Contact Wes Reamsbottom at wes_ reamsbottom@sd42.ca.

‘Still too soon to tell benefits of new bridge’ Bridge from front

Zein said the numbers reflect a different reality after the great recession of 2008 changed the economic landscape and steep jumps in the price of gasoline cut back on the number of people driving over the bridge. According to Statistics Canada, gasoline prices jumped from 86 cents a litre in 2004 to $1.21 a litre in 2008. TransLink’s original projections, made around 2004, anticipated there would be 50,000 daily crossings of the bridge five years after it was built. “When the Golden Ears Bridge opened in 2009, we were in a different economic reality,” Zein said. But after reconfiguring forecasts in 2012, the numbers are more accurate. Costs of running the bridge and using it are presented up front to users, he added. The bridge was the first tolled structure in Metro Vancouver and has now been accepted by communities on both sides of the river as a user-pay model. The Port Mann Bridge, which opened in 2012, is the second tolled structure. Mayor Ernie Daykin said it may still be too early to predict the effects of the Golden Ears Bridge on his municipality’s development. Ten years from now, analyzing the bridge’s effects might be easier. Daykin cited a restaurant owner who said

he now gets customers from Surrey and Langley. Someone else he knows says he bought a nice home in Maple Ridge and said he’d pay bridge tolls for 20 years and still not make up the difference he’d have paid for a house in Surrey. And it was always understood that toll revenues alone wouldn’t be enough to pay for the bridge, although TransLink didn’t expect they’d be as low as they are. “We knew it was going to be a toll bridge from the get-go,” Daykin said.

He understood that no one wants to pay more. “I get it, a nickel is a nickel.” Without such regular increases, it will take longer to pay off the bridge. He still says TransLink should try to offer fare discounts at off-peak times to draw more motorists. TransLink experimented with that briefly a few years ago, but the cheaper tolls didn’t bring increased use. However, “Do it for six months to a year,”

Daykin suggests. And maybe motorists could buy monthly passes. Some motorists have to cross the bridge three or four times a day. “I think 10 years from now … I think that it will continue to roll out to benefit Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. “It has to. It just makes access that much easier.” Daykin said he was willing to look at universal road tolls or mobility pricing, but only if TransLink’s property or gasoline taxes are scaled back in return.

When placed in the normal position, the legroom isn’t ample but on par with others in this class. Connecting to the Cherokee is a snap with the optional 8.4-inch Uconnect system that pairs with smartphone in seconds, is very quick between commands, and has nice looking graphics. The base screen is five inches but has many of the same functionality. Behind the steering wheel, inside the instrument cluster, is another programmable screen for all the information the driver needs frequently. For just $1,300 any Cherokee can be equipped with the optional 3.2L V6 engine – making the walk up to this 271hp engine within reach for many buyers. In addition, this is the very first application of a 9-speed automatic anywhere in the auto industry, providing improved fuel economy and drivability. Having a chance to drive both the 4-cylinder and V6 models with the all-new 9-speed automatic, I’m torn. The V6 is the engine of choice for towing, steep mountain

runs and longer distance driving. The flip side is that the 4-cylinder is a very good in-city commuter and the lighter engine helps this Cherokee to corner, brake and manouevre better. The 9-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly, in fact I forgot it had so many cogs but it does improve fuel economy with a highway rating of 6.4L/100km with the 4-cylinder and 7.0L with the V6. Most Canadians will opt for the AWD versions thanks to our winter conditions, but here too there are more choices. Jeep has included three AWD systems. The first is a called Active Drive 1 with a selectable drive mode called Select-Terrain, for automatic, snow, mud and sand settings. The second is called Active Drive 2 and offers a two-speed mode for low speed crawling. The most aggressive system is Active Drive Lock, which comes in the off-road purpose-built Cherokee called Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is a ‘real’ Jeep; this is thanks to a locking rear differential and a host of electronic aids. The most impressive feature is the low speed crawling mode for both up and down hill tasks. Therefore, Jeep purists, yes there is a Cherokee for you. Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced. Appealing to the younger buyer at PortLiving’s Midtown In Metro Vancouver’s thriving housing market, the younger buyer is an important piece of the puzzle, and PortLiving’s Midtown development in Mount Pleasant is a project that is hitting all the right notes for that demographic. “Some neighbourhoods are more appealing to a younger buyer,” says Tobi Reyes, founder of PortLiving. “Mount Pleasant is one of those.” Midtown is a low-rise mixed-used condominium development that is focusing on being both sustainable and

connected. “There’s a lot of heritage in this area,” Reyes says. “We wanted to add to this existing community, not change it. It’s all about getting the vibe of the neighbourhood.” PortLiving conducted the Midtown Experiment earlier this year, allowing businesses to open a pop-up shop for a week to gauge how popular they would be for local residents. Among the requests they had was a coffee shop and a microbrewery. “The sense of identity in the context of a neighbourhood

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

is important to people,” Reyes says. “This area is a bit underserved and a bit overlooked. We wanted to create a sense of community.” The homes themselves are also appealing to a younger buyer, whether they are first-time homeowners or those looking to upgrade from their current place. Among the features are larger covered patios and a shared communal courtyard to encourage mingling with your neighbours. Homeowners will also have access to bazinga!, a social network that connects you with your neighbours, property manager and the developer, as well as a place to keep documents such as warranties and appliance manuals organized. Eco-conscious living is top of mind at Midtown, and homeowners can be part of that with the One Earth Eco Strata Guide, which will offer sustainable living tips for buyers. Reyes is also the director and co-founder of One Earth, so sustainability is extremely important to him. “The buyer support and community support has been really encouraging,” he says. For more information about PortLiving’s Midtown, visit www.livingmidtown.com or call out 604-563-3330.

A hidden gem is found at Secret Ridge By Kerry Vital

Secret Ridge, built by Mission Group Homes on Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain, is no longer a secret due to its amazing location, stunning homes and large floorplans. “You won’t find this anywhere else in Metro Vancouver,” says sales manager Barbara Hughes. “They feel like single-family homes, without the maintenance and upkeep.” The duplex homes, which Mission Group calls “paired homes” and which are more than double the size of a usual townhome, have already garnered an extremely positive response. The project is over 75 per cent sold, and Hughes notes that the location is one of the biggest draws. “It’s a beautiful setting,” she says. “There’s no one near you, so it feels incredibly private.” Secret Ridge is situated within the Foothills at Burke Mountain community, and bordered by East and West Smiling Creek, making your new home feel like it’s a part of nature. “This a really unique product offering in a beautiful, growing community,” says JoAnne Adamson, director of sales at Mission Group. “It’s an ideal location; there’s no one else offering this kind of opportunity.”

Craftsman-style architecture lends itself to great curb appeal, along with spacious southfacing covered decks and patios, double-wide attached garages and painted wooden fences surrounding each yard. Inside, rich wood laminate flooring throughout the main living areas and soaring vaulted ceilings (with many up to 17 feet) on the main floor welcome you home. The gourmet kitchen includes custom wood shaker cabinetry, complemented by double thick polished granite countertops with a full-height mosaic tiled backsplash, an expansive kitchen island and undercabinet lighting for extra illumination while you cook. Homeowners can choose Kitchen Aid stainless-steel appliances as an optional upgrade. Luxurious bathrooms are another feature of Secret Ridge. All of them include custom wood shaker cabinetry, with the master ensuite going above and beyond with their own double thick granite countertops and large format polished porcelain tile flooring. The main bathroom and secondary ensuite (depending on floor plan) have square-edge laminate countertops, a full-width vanity mirror and a soaker tub and/or full height shower with a gorgeous tile surround. The master-on-main floorplans have been appealing to downsizers and young families alike, Hughes says. One of the floorplans actually has two master suites; one on the main floor and one on the upper floor. “It works well for people who have family living with them,” Hughes says. “It’s very

appealing that way.” Because the homes are paired with another one, all of them are prime corner homes, and have been built wider than any other home in the area. “I can’t stress enough how large these homes feel,” Hughes says. “ Homeowners at Secret Ridge are within easy driving distance to everything the Tri Cities have to offer, including dining,

shopping, leisure opportunities and excellent schools. Burke Mountain itself is steadily growing, with its own restaurants, retail opportunities, trails and schools. Remaining homes at Secret Ridge start at $669,900. For more information, visit www. secretridge.ca, call 604-916-8805 or stop by the display home at #105-3458 Burke Village Promenade, open Saturday to Wednesday between noon and 5 p.m.

Hops at the heart of every beer By Mike Lascelle

C

raft beers are enjoying a renaissance somewhat similar to B.C. wines, and all this production has actually led to a chronic hops shortage – which is ironic because when I was growing up in Chilliwack, there were massive hops farms everywhere. But most of these went broke for a lack of a decent market price. It seems that the demand for this humble plant has come full circle, so much so that many home gardeners have taken to growing their own. I came across one such ingenious planting while doing a Coquitlam landscape consultation recently. The homeowner was growing four different varieties of hops on the southwest side of his house, using stringers tied up to his fascia and countersunk boards to control the suckering root systems. He harvests the hops for use in his own craft beers and each variety has distinct flavouring characteristics. Hops are the unfertilized seed cones of female Humulus lupulus vines and are originally native to many regions of Europe, North America and southwestern Asia. The only other species in this genus is Humulus japonicus, or scandens, which has become a noxious weed in many parts of the United States and is not useful for flavouring beer. There was a time when European beers were flavoured with many different herbal concoctions called ‘gruit’ – some of the plants used included Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Scotch heather (Calluna vulgaris), Sweet Gale (Myrica gale), Juniper berries, Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) and Horehound (Marrubium vulgare). Then along came the Reinheitsgebot, or German Beer Purity Law, which standardized beer production across the Holy Roman Empire and was officially adopted in 1516. This strictly limited the ingredients to water, malted barley and hops, which is why German beers are among my favourites. Hops were first used for brewing beer in 822 AD in Germany and were mainly adopted due to the antibacterial properties

A homeowner grows four varieties of hops on the side of his house, using stringers tied to his fascia and countersunk boards to control the suckering root systems, and uses them to make craft beer.

that preserved the brew, allowing it to be shipped. Of course, if you want to try growing your own, you are going to need some sort of support system or wire for this herbaceous vine to twine around. Start by purchasing only female cultivars (‘Centennial’, ‘Nugget’, ‘Willamette’, ‘Fuggle H’, ‘Hallertauer’, ‘Northern Brewer’, ‘Cascade – all available from Richters Herbs of Ontario), as these are the source of hops cones and the males would only pollinate them, which makes seed and ruins them for brewing. Humulus lupulus needs six to eight hours of sun, rich well-drained soils, daily watering in the heat and extensive root pruning in spring to keep them from taking over your garden. You can also find complete instructions on harvesting and curing hops at www. brewersfriend.com, under ‘Fall Hop Harvest Guidelines’. Mike Lascelle is a local nursery manager and gardening authour.

THE NEWS/sports Playing for Team B.C. by Nei l Corbe tt Black Press

There will be a strong local flavour on Team B.C., as it enters the under-17 national championships later this month. Running the show is Pitt Meadows secondary coach Rich Goulet, a job he has held many times before. His star centre with the Marauders, Graham Smith, is one of the leading scorers on the B.C. team. They started the march to nationals in April with team selections, and have been playing in tournaments in the U.S. to get ready. On July 23, they will leave for the nationals in Edmonton, which will Goulet run from July 26-30. Ontario always goes into the tournament as the favourite, with the rest of the provinces hoping to be able to play at their level. Last year, B.C. finished ninth, but Goulet is trying to whip the B.C. boys into a medal contender. Smith has been this route before, having played on provincial teams each of the past three years. He has had some success – at the un-

der-15 level he was on a team that won bronze at the nationals. “It’s great – the stage and the pressure is so high at the nationals,” Smith said. It is the stage where players are auditioning for spots on the national team. “From the government’s point of view, this all leads to the Olympics,” said Goulet. Through the high school season, Smith does battle with a kid like Tyler Anderson, another six-foot-five centre, who plays for the Walnut Grove Gators, or his Gator teammate Bryce Derton. So it’s a great to be able to appreciate them as teammates, rather than trying to shut down a rival. There are so many players who can make a bucket, that no one guy feels he has to carry the team on his shoulders, as he would in high school. “It’s a blast. Everyone has such a high skill level, and you have the ability to just play basketball,” said Smith. The team has been playing a lot, and has seen progress. In its first tournament in Seattle, the team went 1-3. But all of the games came down to the last possession. A month later, at the Seattle Ro-

tary tournament, the team won two and lost two. Then it won the Lynden High School Tournament. “That was good morale booster,” said Smith. It might seem odd for a selects team from B.C. to be competing against U.S. high school teams, but the hoops culture in America gives them a big edge on the Canadians. “Lynden is a little U.S. town, but they’re talented, and then the team chemistry is really good,” said Smith. The players have bonded, especially with kids like Cowichan’s Josh Charles, who have to billet with other players, fast friendships are formed. “We’re all friends.” But soon they’ll be rivals again. After the nationals, Smith will start working toward his senior year with the Marauders, where he routinely put up 30 points and double digit rebounds. This national tournament experience, combined with his own maturity, should mean bigger things for him personally, and for the team. The Marauders will return a talented group of players, and he sees them as very competitive with the other rosters around B.C. “I want to play smarter – less turnovers,” he said. “And I want to win the provincial championships.”

Pride 2003 bronze in summer tourney

Neil Corbett/THE NEWS

Eyeball to eyeball A member of the Haney Neptunes water polo team gets to the ball ahead of an opponent during a Canada Day tournament in Maple Ridge.

Teen enters B.C. Superweek When Maggie Coles-Lyster of the Local Ride Racing team pulls up to the start line at B.C. Superweek’s first race today, it will have been one year since at the age of 14, she was the youngest cyclist to race in this prestigious series. And during the past year, this now 15-year-old Maple Ridge resident has had to overcome some major road blocks to get here again. In November, 2013, while preparing for the Canadian Cyclocross Championship, Coles-Lyster suddenly became very ill. After a week of doctor visits and medical test, she was finally admitted to emergency with a ruptured appendix. After three weeks in hospital, two months off school and 20 pounds of weight lost, ColesLyster was given the green light to begin riding her bike again. It was the determination and strong work ethics of this young athlete that saw her quickly pedal her way back to health, and on track for her 2014 race season. After early season successes with a second-place finish at her hometown race Race The Ridge, Coles-Lyster headed south to Enumclaw, Washington for the Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race. With her race category competing alongside the Elite Women, she

placed an amazing sixth place in the criterium and ended up second overall in her category. But as the season went on, she kept getting stronger. At the B.C. Road and Criterium Championships, she was lined-up with some of North America’s top women racers. In the road race she fought hard to place 10th in the group, but even more impressively, placed sixth at the Bastion Square Criterium in a field where

only 13 out of the 30 starters even finished. “I had to work hard to maintain positioning and to not get dropped at Bastion Square. The strong women in the field were creating record lap times for this race. I was so excited to have the opportunity to participate in the sprint finish with such a classy field of riders. It also helped to give me more confidence going into B.C. Superweek , that I can compete with these top riders.” explained Coles-Lyster. On June 7 and 8, Coles-Lyster made her way to the Comox Valley for the BC Youth Road and Time Trial Champioships. Against a strong field of young BC riders, she was able to take both the B.C. Road and Time Trial Championships. With her sights focused on B.C. Superweek, her racing took her to Victoria with her track bike, where she won the Junior Omnium and Junior Sprint Tournament against a very strong group of young up and coming racers. Coles-Lyster will be participating in eight of B.C. Superweek’s races starting with the Tour of Delta Brenco Criterium on July 4. She will be unable to race the Tour of Delta UCI Road Race on July 6 due to her young age.

The Ridge Meadows Pride ’03 softball team just completed a successful weekend at the RMMSA “Summer Series” U12 A division tournament. Despite being the only 2003 team entered in the tournament, the Pride battled to a second-place seeding through the round robin portion, with wins over Richmond Islanders ’02, Ridge Meadows Pride ’02, and Delta Heat ’02. The girls ran into a tough Victoria Devils ’02 team in the playoff semi-finals who eventually overcame Pride ’03s lead in the final inning to win 4-3. That set up a rematch between Pride ’03 and Pride ’02 in the consolation final, where Pride ’03 prevailed 2-1 to take third place in the tournament. This result will send the team into the U12 provincial championship tournament (July 11-13 in Richmond) with plenty of confidence.

Ridge to host female lacrosse provincials For the first time, the Ridge Meadows Girls Minor Lacrosse Association is hosting the 2014 provincial championships, from July 9-13. Top teams from each division – pee wee through to junior – will be competing at Pitt Meadows Arenas and Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. “I would like to congratulate Wes Eaton and the rest of the female provincials committee in putting together a very memorable lacrosse event for our extraordinary female player group in Ridge Meadows and the entire province,” said Ron Williams, president of Ridge Meadows Minor Lacrosse. Girls from around the province, ages eight to 17, will compete. It is a fast-growing area of the sport, as registration for female box lacrosse has increased from 128 in 1999 to 913 registrations in 2013.
