Some people think they are cute and others find them creepy. Whether you are fascinated or fearful, the bottom line is it’s important to avoid coming into physical contact with bats, the primary carrier of the rabies virus in British Columbia. Between four and eight per cent of the bats that are tested after coming into contact with people are found to have the rabies virus. Infected bats can transmit rabies to humans when their saliva comes into contact with a person’s mucus membranes (eyes, nose or

Last year, 32 people in the Interior Health region were treated for potential exposure to rabies. “We want to remind people to be careful around bats,” says Jennifer Jeyes, communicable disease specialist with Interior Health. “Bats often fly into poorly sealed cabins and homes, they roost in attic spaces and they can even be found hanging inside closed patio

Local band hosts Aboriginal Day

By Doris E. Rufli The Canim Lake Band celebrated its annual Aboriginal Day on June 21, with the open invitation to folks by hosting cultural events and displays at the Eliza Archie Memorial School for everybody to observe, learn and celebrate CLB heritage. On offer were traditional foods and medicines, as well as learning booths for dream catcher and drum making, photographs and information on various aspects of life of CLB residents, including fishing, trapping and hunting in particular. Two more tables containing the loonie auction and bake sale were set up with all proceeds going toward the Lahal Tournament on July 5. The Bannock Making Contest took place in the school kitchen and was open for beginners and more experienced participants. A delicious Indian Taco lunch was also available, prepared and served by North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) athletes and parents. Visitors were treated to traditional drumming and chanting, as well as dancing by performers of all ages, dressed in colourful costumes. The young ones could choose between finger painting and other games specifically set up to entertain them. The final feature of the day was the Amazing Rez Race. Groups consisting of children and adults were given a number of clues to find and decipher as well as tasks to complete, for which prizes were won. This first day of

summer turned out beautifully. The event was well attended with

people wandering from booth to booth, trying their hand on crafting

their own dream catcher or simply enjoying the goings on.

King’s Quilters help third-world citizens A ceremony was held during a recent Sunday worship service at Christ The King Evangelical Lutheran Church in 100 Mile House to bless and dedicate a shipment of relief materials destined for refugee camps in Mauritania. This shipment was assembled by the King’s Quilters, a group of eight ladies from the church and their friends. Deidre Allen organized the project, which saw the ladies work from October to April to make 87 quilts comprised of more than 2,000 squares of fabric. Three ladies from Young Lake added 22 children’s quilts, as well as 87 rolls of leprosy

Tsilhqot’in Stewardship Agreement extended

A renewed agreement between the Tsilhqot’in Nation and the provincial government will enhance government-to-government engagement on land and resource management and provide greater investor certainty in the Cariboo. According to the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation’s June 10 press release, British Columbia continues to fulfill its obligations to consult on potential impacts to Aboriginal rights and title and recognizes the importance of working with the Tsilhqot’in Nation in a respectful manner. The three-year Tsilhqot’in Stewardship Agreement (TSA) builds on the success of the original Tsilhqot’in Framework Agreement (TFA), which formalized a single window for referrals on natural resources applications within the traditional territories of Tsilhqot’in Nation members. The process has refocused the consultation workload to those decisions that have a higher influence on the land base and fostered a more collaborative form of decision making. B.C. is providing $670,000 per year to help the Tsilhqot’in Nation continue the positive work of the original agreement, including agreement implementation, negotiation capacity and the support for an improved wildlife committee that will allow increased community involvement in address-

ing the moose decline in the agreement area. Additionally, the TSA will support the implementation of a forestry strategy that will address concerns related to cumulative impacts associated with mountain pine beetle salvage and sustainable resource development. “Creating a more effective and efficient consultation process for resource management is an essential part of making B.C. an attractive destination for investors. The work achieved through the Tsilhqot’in F r a m e w o r k Agreement demonstrates the potential for positive partnerships between government, industry and First Nation,” says Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister John Rustad. The TSA is part of a wider group of agreements between the provincial government and First Nations

called strategic engagement agreements (SEA). SEAs with First Nations are intended to encourage a positive and respectful government-to-government relationship; strengthen B.C.’s investment climate and establish mutually agreed-upon procedures for consultation. The five First Nations that are signatories to the agreement are the Alexis Creek Indian Band, Tl’etinqox-t’in Government Office, Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government, ?Esdilagh First Nations and the Toosey Indian Band. “This is a continuation of the agreement that we have had over the last five years to facilitate resource extraction within the Tsilhqot’in territories and only to handle a referral process on that interest. Although it is not perfect, over the last year, both parties have negotiated

Report on youth drowning released

Get ted! ec n Cariboo Co n

Teenage males targeted for education The BC Coroners Service is recommending new efforts be devoted to providing more effective water safety education, especially for teenage males aged 15 to 18. The recommendation is one of three made by a Child Death Review panel into child and youth drowning. The report was made public on June 26. The panel, which was chaired by Child Death Review Unit director Michael Egilson and included experts from

a variety of child-serving and water safety agencies, reviewed the cases of 35 children and youth who drowned in British Columbia in 2007 and 2013. The panel reaffirmed the numerous prevention messages put forth by the Lifesaving Society and Canadian Red Cross around water safety, supervision, boater safety, alcohol use, life jacket/PFD use and pool safety. The child death review panel also iden-

tified that some of these important messages are not getting through to the young people most at risk. Of the deaths reviewed, almost seven in 10 involved youths aged 15 to 18, and three-quarters of those who died were male. The cases show males in that age group are particularly prone to underestimate the risk involved in activities, overestimate their own swimming abilities, and use substances, such as alcohol, which may

affect their judgment, co-ordination and/or ability to self-rescue. The panel recommends the BC/Yukon branch of the Lifesaving Society bring together key stakeholders to develop messaging specifically targeted to young men in this age group. Teenaged males will be asked to participate to try to determine how best to reach this demographic group. The second recommendation was directed to the Canadian

Logo needed for website, brochures

Ken Alexander Free Press

The South Cariboo Community Enhancement Foundation has been in its organizational stages for a while, and foundation treasurer Judy Simkins says the SCCEF is gearing up to let folks know what it’s all about. The SCCEF is holding a logo design contest with the deadline for entries coming up quickly – July 11. The winner of the logo contest will receive $150, and the artwork will become the prop-

New community enhancement foundation for South Cariboo erty of the foundation. Entries need to have the full names of the people submitting the logos and they need to be e-mailed to julie@centenniallaw.com. “We’re getting things rolling and we are in the process of getting a logo, so we can set up a website. We’re hoping to get some brochures out to the public, so people know what the foundation is all about.” The SCCEF will provide

people with the opportunity to make a lasting charitable donation to enhance the community forever. This will be done by investing in permanent endowment funds. Only the investment income will be distributed. The funds are retained to generate income for the future. The foundation has a working partnership with the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) and the District of 100

Mile House. The CRD and the District have contributed to the foundation and a commitment has been made by the CRD to continue to contribute funds until 2020. The SCCEF has applied for, and will be receiving, matching grants from the Northern Development Initiative Trust. The foundation is a member of the Community Foundations of Canada and adheres to its membership criteria. The SCCEF will be able to start providing grant funds to our local community in the near future.

Dementia tele-workshop available Struggling with the challenges of providing care to someone with dementia from a distance? Local family caregivers can get help from a free tele-workshop offered by the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. Called Long Distance Caregiving, the July 15 tele-workshop offers strategies to better cope with the situation, including assessing needs, identifying resources, maximizing visits and sharing responsibilities with others. More than 70,000 people in the province – many of them in the local

area – live with dementia, and that number is increasing dramatically as the population ages. The tele-workshop starts at 7 p.m. Connecting to the sessions is as easy as phoning toll-free 1-866994-7745, then entering pass code 1122333 when prompted, or visiting momentum.adobeconnect.com/alzheimerbc and entering as a Guest to listen to and view the presentation online at the same time. If you are thinking of

Act quickly if scratched by a bat From 1

• If you find a live bat in a room of your home, open the window and close interior doors until the bat leaves. • Seek professional bat-control advice (from a pest control or wildlife specialist) if your home or workplace or is inhabited by bats. • Avoid locations or activities where bats are likely to be found (e.g., caves). • If you have a pet dog, cat or ferret, make sure they are vaccinated regularly against rabies. Pets that were born and raised in B.C. pose a very low risk of transmitting rabies to humans; however, vaccinating your pets will protect them from rabies. If you have been bitten or scratched: • Thoroughly wash the wounds with soap and water.

• Contact your local public health unit or family doctor immediately. • Call a wildlife or pest control company to capture the bat. If trying to capture the bat yourself, avoid contact by wearing leather gloves, a hat, long sleeves, and pants.

• Safely contain the bat in a secure covered container to prevent others from being exposed. Keep the bat in a safe location until public health can arrange to pick it up and test it for rabies. “All contact with bats should be taken seri-

ously. Bats have tiny sharp teeth and claws, so scratches or bites may not be visible or painful, but could still be there,” says Jeyes. “Anyone who has come into contact with a live or dead bat should call their local public health unit or doctor right away. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.” Early treatment is crucial to prevent rabies from progressing. Treatment involves a two-week period of vaccinations that must be

administered as soon as possible after exposure. For more information: see HealthLink BC File #07 at http://www. healthlinkbc.ca/health files/hfile07.stm.
