The 200-mile marathon man

Berry fest a sweet treat this weekend

Rob Smith hit the 100mile mark and began to throw up. At 105 miles, blisters covered his feet and were so painful it felt like someone was hammering a nail through them. But the Gordon Head ultra-marathoner kept motivated – even positive – as he thought about the remaining 95 miles he needed to endure the gruelling 200-mile Pigtails Challenge last May in Renton, Wash. His tenacity paid off as he won the race in 52 hours and 32 minutes, beating his personal best from a year ago by 5.5 hours. Not bad for a 56 year old. “I really don’t know what drove me other than the challenge,” Smith, an ambulance paramedic, said over coffee at a downtown Victoria Starbucks. “It’s a challenge out there and beyond where most people look and never go. There’s a lot of satisfaction in knowing I can do it.” The Pigtails Challenge is run around Lake Young Watershed, which is a rolling loop with 900 feet of elevation gain. Each loop is 9.4 miles. Runners race one direction and then run the opposite way. It’s difficult to tell, or remember, whether, you’ve lapped a runner or who

Daniel Kuhlmann was the favourite to take it again. Smith’s big season of running hasn’t ended just yet. He’s still planning to run a handful of 50 and 100 mile races before the end of the year. And he has plans, some day, to run the 310-mile length of Vancouver Island through a series of trails. “I really don’t see that I’m doing anything special,” he said. “I understand what my limits are, but it’s that ability to be able to get as much as I can out of myself and not giving in.”

Get your summer strawberry fix tomorrow as Beaver Lake Park hosts the traditional serving of strawberries and ice cream along with plenty of kid-friendly activities. Thousands are expected to attend Strawberry Festival, which finds its roots in the many agricultural communities that make up modern day Saanich. The serving of strawberries and ice cream has been moved earlier to 1 p.m. this year, and will run until 3. Tickets are 50 cents per serving, available from the start of the Strawberry Festival at 11 a.m., with a cap of 3,500 sales. “Servings have been close to selling out the past two years so be sure to buy tickets early,” said Saanich special events coordinator Rob Phillips. Music starts at 11 a.m.. with Russell in the Bushes playing classic rock, followed by The Sutcliffes at 12:15 p.m. and the Commodore Big Band at 1:45 p.m. And don’t miss the pie eating contest at 1:45 p.m. The festival’s kid zone will include a miniature train this year, as well as pony rides, a bouncy castle and other interactive features. Find overflow parking at Saanich Commonwealth Place with a shuttle bus service between Beaver Lake Park from noon to 4 p.m.

Gordon Head resident Rob Smith competes in the Chuckanut 50 km near Bellingham, Wash. The 56-year-old achieved the near-impossible feat of completing and winning the 200-mile Pigtails Challenge in May. remains ahead of you. The races are determined by attrition: “People who were ahead of me at the start were dropping out and I didn’t even know it. I just concentrated on running my own race. There was no sense trying to run faster. Trying to pay attention where everyone else was would just be distracting,” Smith said. The first day was a “real mental battle,” but Smith had run the race before and knew night would soon descend and bring its own set of challenges. “I knew all I needed to

do was focus on the here and now. You just have to survive the night and see what’s there in the morning. You always feel better the next morning,” he said. When dawn broke, Smith learned just two runners had leads on him. His first 100-mile split was 25 minutes faster than the previous year, and he was now in a position to win. In the end, his strategy worked. Smith doesn’t consider himself a lifelong runner. He didn’t even run his first marathon – a mere 26.2 miles – until 1986.

He said the most he’d run regularly before then was about three miles, but was lucky to have a job as a logger that kept him in top shape. He fell in love with ultramarathoning when he and a buddy took on the Great Walk between Gold River and Tahsis in 1995. He was hooked. Since then, he has competed in two 200-mile races, thirteen 100-mile races and numerous other smaller ultra-marathons. Heading into this year’s Pigtails race, Smith had no grand ambition to finish first. His goal was to finish. After all, last year’s winner

The Island’s own weather network School-based network reveals region’s tricky micro-climates Travis Paterson News staff

The sun forces Ed Wiebe to squint as he swings open a heavy door and steps into broad daylight on the roof of the Bob Wright Centre of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Victoria. When he opens his eyes, he makes his way through a grid of student astronomy telescopes to a weather monitor a few meters away. The little black spoons of the anemometer are constantly spinning as they measure the wind and add another piece of weather data to the School-based Weather Station Network, comprised of about 150 stations at schools across Vancouver Island. “We received some grant funding and put these stations around the South Island in partnership with the school districts. Right away we learned there is a great discrepancy in weather conditions across Greater Victoria,” says Wiebe, who started the project in 2002 with Andrew Weaver, now Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA. The stations record and

report the temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, air pressure, rainfall, sunshine (solar power), amount of sun energy coming in, UV index and rain rate. It’s all collected in a server at UVic and made available (with a four minute delay) at victoriaweather.ca. Even more handy is the smartphone app, which reports the weather from every station on the Island within the last five minutes. “The first station we ever installed is actually on the Ian Stewart Complex as we used to be in an office there,” Wiebe says. The network has since grown substantially but remains a part time job for Wiebe, a research associate in UVic’s renowned Climate Modelling Group Lab, lead by Weaver. “We were fascinated by what the station was showing. We wondered if we could install more but have them in a closer distance than the local Environment Canada stations,” Wiebe said. Environment Canada provides a fairly accurate weather picture with a few stations in Greater Victoria. But Environment Canada’s

For example, it’s often two to three degrees warmer in the Highlands than the coastal zones of James Bay and Fairfield. It also rains approximately 50 per cent more at the airport than downtown Victoria. “With the stations so close together we could you see interesting weather differences, especially cold

fronts moving across the Island, which we pick up quite accurately,” he says.

“Right away we learned there is a great discrepancy in weather conditions across Greater Victoria.” -Ed Wiebe The majority of the stations are on built on elementary and middle schools, with some high schools too.

It’s part of the project’s mandate to educate and engage students with science, when resources are available. Each station comes with a display monitor that teachers and students use to follow along. “We’ve provided educational resources on site for teachers and there are established lesson plans for teaching weather,” Wiebe says. “We’ve also found teachers are using it in different ways. Long way to go on mental illness Few can argue that mental illness touches everyone. There are, of course, those who have been diagnosed. Then there are their children, siblings, parents, friends and co-workers. Even complete strangers are often hit with the ripples, as society bears the burden of missed work days, medical visits, inadequate treatment options, etc. It doesn’t matter that research has led to many strategies and treatments that can help sufferers live productive, even normal, lives. Perhaps if it felt easier to talk openly about mental illness, things would be different. For those directly affected, it can feel simpler to try to ignore the reality. While there have been great strides in the realm of mental illness, society still has a hard time accepting it as a disease. ‘Mental illness’ is still a phrase that doesn’t dare get said in polite company. But slowly that shroud is lifting. Some people are becoming more brave to step into the spotlight, to talk about their own struggles. Clara Hughes, for instance. The former Canadian Olympic cyclist and speedskater shared the story of her own family’s battles with mental illness as she cycled 12,000 kms across Canada. Clara’s “Big Ride” concluded on July 1 in Ottawa and connected with more than 23,000 young people in 105 communities. People like Hughes, and those enduring their challenges less publicly, know the difference that acceptance—both of the conditions and the person trying to live with them—makes, and we can all learn from them. But there is still a long way to go. No one should feel the need to hide something they cannot control. The reality is, many of us share the blame for the fact so many people do just that. – Peace Arch News What do you think? Give us your comments by email: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. Teachers can’t help recession, Tom Your legislative columnist, Tom Fletcher, in his zeal to provide the facts, states in part: “Teachers had just sailed through a crippling global recession with a series of raises, but were oblivious to all that.” Fletcher would have us believe that the recession to which he refers was some sort of natural catastrophe, when in fact it was directly caused by the oligarchs of the financial system reaping rewards by deliberately skewing the rules. For some unfathomable reason, Mr. Fletcher believes we all must somehow bear the responsibility for a calamity engineered by a few dozen con men in high places, and he chooses his target of opportunity the present teachers strike. Why then must Mr. Fletcher insist that teachers be held to account for something over which they had no hand in fabricating? Why indeed must any of us be held to account for the arrogance of those who think they are “too big to fail”? Richard Weatherill Saanich

treatment plants are being kept quiet. Studies have found that antibacterial soaps are killing the germs that are meant to aid in the digestive sewage process. Also, the hygienic sanitary “flushable wipes” are clogging the sewer pipes. In 2013, New York spent $18 million unclogging the disposable wipes from within their sewer pipes. Another problem: there are plastic polyethylene microbeads that are used as exfoliates to scrub our skin, whiten our teeth and brighten our clothes. One single facial cleanser contains 300,000 of the microbeads. In June 2014, Illinois banned the sale of microbeads, while New York and California are preparing new laws. Recent studies show that these microscopic plastic beads are not removed in sewage treatment facilities. Presently, they accumulate at 80,000 per square kilometre on the seabed. Fish and other marine animals are unknowingly ingesting them. We consume aquatic marine life as part of a healthy diet. The microbeads also attract contaminants and toxic chemicals

that stick to their surface as they do not breakdown or dissolve in seawater. Evidence will soon appear in our health care examinations. Other warning signs being ignored are the fact that we are in an mega-earthquake/tsunami zone. While California is preparing to move it’s sewage facilities inland due to earthquakes, tsunamis, climate change and sea level rise, professional engineers at Seaterra are placing the Secondary Sewage Treatment plant just a few metres above the high tide line. We are assured that the Seaterra plant will be protected by a seawall. As a taxpayer, I’d feel better protected if they placed a cement statue of King Canute holding back the tide along the McLoughlin Point shoreline. Our consumer laws need to be changed immediately as we can’t change the laws of Mother Nature. The CRD’s professional engineers have dismissed the climate change warnings as just graffiti on the seawall. Art Bickerton, Saanich

A quiet home in rural Saanich that shelters hundreds of local women from domestic violence each year is receiving a bit of love back from the community. The 18-bed home, which houses about 150 women and 100 children annually, received a $40,000 makeover, co-ordinated by members of the local Real Estate Staging Association (RESA). “We can sometimes wonder if we’re making a difference, because there’s always more work to be done to stop violence against women,” said Marlene Goley, manager of women’s and family services with The Cridge Centre for the Family. “But having this kind of support rallying around us shows us people are remembering us.” The renovation included new paint, light fixtures, window dressings, furniture, artwork and landscaping. “One of the favourite rooms of everyone is just the entrance hall coming in,” Goley said. “They put a big mirror in, a lovely bench, and some artwork. It just makes such a difference and feels so good.” Women can stay for up to 30 days at the transition house and receive ongoing support from outreach workers confidentially as they rebuild their lives. One of Saanich’s most treasured heritage buildings is being refit this summer. Luckily, only the outside of the 120 year old schoolhouse, home of Strawberry Vale preschool, needs to be fixed in compliance with heritage rules. Renovations are underway on the inside of the building, to be ready for the upcoming school year in September. “We’re getting new shelving, some green upgrades, including some work on the original wainscoting, and other improvements as parts of the building are just worn out,” said Chrissy Simpson, a mom of two StrawTravis Paterson/News staff berry Vale students. seats are supportive and comfortable. The rear seats too are comfy and slide for and aft for more cargo storage. When placed in the normal position, the legroom isn’t ample but on par with others in this class. Connecting to the Cherokee is a snap with the optional 8.4-inch Uconnect system that pairs with smartphone in seconds, is very quick between commands, and has nice looking graphics. The base screen is five inches but has many of the same functionality. Behind the steering wheel, inside the instrument cluster, is another programmable screen for all the information the driver needs frequently. Drive The base 2.4L 4-cylinder with 184hp is the base engine on all trim levels. For just $1,300 any Cherokee can be equipped with the optional 3.2L V6 engine – making the walk up to this 271hp engine within reach for many buyers. In addition, this is the very first application of a 9-speed automatic anywhere in the auto industry, providing improved fuel economy and drivability. Having a chance to drive both the 4-cylinder and V6 models with the all-new 9-speed automatic, I’m torn. The V6 is the engine of choice for towing, steep mountain

runs and longer distance driving. The flip side is that the 4-cylinder is a very good in-city commuter and the lighter engine helps this Cherokee to corner, brake and manouevre better. The 9-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly, in fact I forgot it had so many cogs but it does improve fuel economy with a highway rating of 6.4L/100km with the 4-cylinder and 7.0L with the V6. Most Canadians will opt for the AWD versions thanks to our winter conditions, but here too there are more choices. Jeep has included three AWD systems. The first is a called Active Drive 1 with a selectable drive mode called Select-Terrain, for automatic, snow, mud and sand settings. The second is called Active Drive 2 and offers a two-speed mode for low speed crawling. The most aggressive system is Active Drive Lock, which comes in the off-road purpose-built Cherokee called Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is a ‘real’ Jeep; this is thanks to a locking rear differential and a host of electronic aids. The most impressive feature is the low speed crawling mode for both up and down hill tasks. Therefore, Jeep purists, yes there is a Cherokee for you. Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced. The Lowdown Power: 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder, and 271hp 3.2L V6. Fill-up: 9.9L/7.0L/100km (city/highway AWD) Sticker price: $23,695-$32,195

There is talk in Greater Vancouver of introducing a regional carbon tax to fund transit and highway initiatives. Should such a tax be extended B.C.-wide to help fund much needed transport infrastructure throughout the rest of the province? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer. QUESTION

Taking to a track that you’ve never been on before, on a motorcycle that’s foreign to you is much like Connect the Dots. Prematurely, you try to make out the figure that will shortly appear on the page. You might even spend more energy on it than you need too. At first, it seems disjointed and abstract. But as you use the ballpoint of the pen, take your time, and obediently draw lines from one number to the next, those lines will commence shape. Aaaaah, so that’s what it is… It turns from angular to organic. You stop trying to predict the silhouette on the page because you just go with the flow. You trust the numbers. You make a shape. That shape manifests as your first lap of the Adria International Raceway, a circuit northeast of Bologna in Italy. Your ‘writing’ tool? – The Ducati 899 Panigale. While you’re trying to get your footing around the sinuous curves of the track, you have to remember to breathe, relax and focus. In no particular order. After all, when the light turns green and it’s your turn to head out and master your skills and your bike, those three things will come in very handy. Ducati’s Riding Experience (DRE) is open to all those who are looking to hone their motorcycling abilities from some incredible riders and teachers. A mixture of theory and practical appli-

cation helps participants understand why you need to do the things you do, and then do them! To get your feet wet, they don’t just hand you keys to the bike, show you to the raceway and say, “Have fun.” Though, that would be fun, in a stressful kind of way! – Slow speed skills are assessed and coaches are on hand to give you some pointers. The next day of the 2-day Racing Level 1 program is a long day; a day that’s filled with ups and downs. Ups because the nemesis corner has now become your greatest strength. Downs because you just want to get better and better but you’re feeling so tired. And want just one more lap around the track to prove to yourself you can do it better. With the sun beating down on you, it’s a blessing and a curse. It makes for amazing track conditions, but it does get mighty warm inside a one-piece leather racing

suit. But hey, it’s worth every drop of sweat. Then there’s that moment. The moment where the only person who can hear and feel your excitement is you. For riders, the first time you drag your knee in a corner is a memorable experience. It’s your first and will forever be. I had my first at this track and it was glorious. That wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for the encouragement of both my instructor and the Panigale. With its smooth revving Superquadro L-Twin, liquid cooled, 898 cc engine has both the grunt and purr to help you get quicker and quicker. The 6-speed transmission with DQS (Ducati Quick Shift) allows you to upshift with an open throttle, helping you get up to speed on the straight stretch. And twin discs up front and one in the rear, get you slowed down in a flash for the lefthand turn after the straight. As the adrenaline pumps through your veins did you remember to breath, relax and focus? – Maybe next lap! The certificate that’s handed to you with your name on at the end of the day is evidence of a job well done. It represents the effort you put into developing your confidence on two wheels and the strength it took, both physically and mentally, to get through it all in one piece. And after a fulfilling, educational and uplifting experience, you know can breathe, relax and focus on the next adventure. Wherever that may be. Local clergy question proposed sex trade law Drew McLachlan News staff

Greater Victoria clergy have condemned the federal government’s proposed prostitution laws, criticizing what they consider to be a disregard for the welfare and human rights of sex workers. Bill C-36, titled the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, is before the House of Commons. The bill was introduced after the Supreme Court of Canada ruled the current laws unconstitutional last December.

“This does not further the welfare of sex workers, but continues their marginalization.” -Rev. Bruce Bryant-Scott Rev. Bruce Bryant-Scott referred to the legislative bill as a “re-wording of old legislation.” “It disregards the issues raised by

the Supreme Court of Canada when it struck down the provisions of the Criminal Code that targets sex workers,” he said. “This does not further the welfare of sex workers, but continues their marginalization.” Bryant-Scott clarified that the Anglican Church continues to uphold marriage as the ideal and normative place for sexual relations, but that he considers the added risk that would be brought on by the bill to be “immoral.” He also criticized the lack of consultation with sex workers and advocates, as well as the discriminatory nature of the legislation. “This bill continues to criminalize poverty, especially amongst indigenous peoples, youth coming from government care, women with disabilities, and low-income single mothers.” Bryant-Scott’s release was signed by 34 ministers, as well as two University of Victoria professors. Half of the signatures were from women, and one from a First Nations priest. reporter@vicnews.com

Steven Palmer is challenging the province’s decision not to fund a $5,000 wheelchair. He says the decion contravenes the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The province disagrees. Kevin Laird/News staff

A Victoria disabled rights advocate is accusing the provincial government of not following the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities after officials refused to fully fund a specialized wheelchair. Steven Palmer said despite receiving a doctor’s prescription for a rigid wheelchair, the B.C. government won’t permit spending more than $1,500 on a wheelchair. A rigid wheelchair costs about $5,000. Rigid wheelchairs provide greater mobility and flexibility for people with physical disabilities, as compared to electric or manual wheelchairs.

“It would make my life so much easier,” Palmer said. “It’s a safer option for maneuvering on the street and when travelling.” The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was signed by Canada in March 2010.

“The convention is a very serious document.” -Steven Palmer Under Section 20, the convention requires signing nations to give disabled people the option, with their doctor, to decide what they need, not based on what government is willing to pay. Palmer said the federal government has failed to implement the international treaty by requiring provinces to comply with the provisions. “The convention is a very serious document,” said Palmer, an advocate with the Disabled Rights Alliance, who has lived with polio for more than 60 years.

“The very fact they’ve gotten away with this for so many years and still refuse to acknowledge they are in violation of the convention is disturbing.” Palmer has received the backing of Victoria MP Murray Rankin and Victoria-Swan Lake MLA Rob Fleming who have called on the federal and provincial governments to properly fund the wheelchair request. So far, no response has been received. “It’s going to make a big difference in a lot of people’s lives because if we can set a precedent here, and establish the fact the provincial government is obligated to provide this type of equipment, then it’s going to be easier for other people to get the equipment too,” Palmer said. A spokesman for the B.C. Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation said the ministry’s poicies are consistent with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities klaird@blackpress.ca

The report shows that 680 properties were sold in June this year, a 2.4 per cent increase from the 664 sold in June last year. Home sales were down five per cent from May, which is typical as summer approaches. BUYING TIP |Check the selling prices of comparable homes in your neighbourhood to get a fair deal

Your first home: many options available Buyers weigh needs versus wants and find a balance Jennifer Blyth News contributor

In a real estate market as pricey as Greater Victoria’s, getting your foot in the door can be a challenge, especially for young families. As home prices have crept higher, it often comes down to weighing needs and wants to choose what is most important – a more expensive neighbourhood closer to town, meaning a smaller, older home, for example, or the opportunity to get more home for the money but live farther from downtown? “If they’re willing to look for something older and do some fixing up, there are areas like Glanford that are popular in Saanich,” says Tim Ayres, president of the Greater Victoria Real Estate Board. However, for many younger buyers with families, “I still think that if they want the picket fence and yard, they’re going to have to look to the West Shore.” Responding to market needs, more developers, builders and even existing homeowners are building options for these younger buyers, particularly those looking beyond the condo market for a property to suit a growing family. In new construction,

“there’s a lot of variety out there for families and entrylevel homes,” says Casey Edge, executive director, Victoria Home Builders Association. Since 2007, the region has seen a decrease in new home prices, though largely due to lower labour and material costs, not land costs, Edge says. As the market and economy continue to improve, these costs will rise again. What has stayed relatively untouched is the low interest rates that help offset the region’s high real

estate prices. The B.C. Real Estate Association expects B.C. housing starts to rise approximately two per cent in both 2014 and 2015, thanks to an expected acceleration of economic growth and employment. Looking beyond 2015, however, strong growth in the 20- to 44-year-old demographic is expected “to put pressure on new home inventories and drive up new construction activity, particularly multiple units that cater to price-sensitive first-time buyers,” the asso-

ciation says. The Greater Victoria townhouse market, for example, is “definitely seeing a bit of an uptake in sales and building,” Ayres says. Where condominiums catering to young families have been seen in the Vancouver area, for example, here on the south Island, builders have focused more on townhomes, small-footprint single-family homes, and in more established areas, infill projects of small multi-family projects. While townhomes and condominiums can have

a pricepoint appealing to first-time buyers, they also bring additional costs such as strata fees. The trade-off is the freedom from yardwork and maintenance that comes with a single-family home. Falling in the middle are some of the small-lot homes with minimal, easy-care landscaping. However, in family-friendly communities such as Westhills, parks, playgrounds and recreation areas are nearby, offering plenty of opportunities to get outside. While a great deal of new building is keeping the West Shore real estate market hopping, other areas of the Capital Region are seeing their own opportunities for more affordable housing. In some areas of Saanich, for example, it’s not unusual to see a single-family home on a large lot rezoned to allow a second attached home, effectively creating a duplex that doesn’t look like the standard mirror-image duplex. Though still falling under strata rules and with some shared expenses, duplexes typically don’t have strata fees and offer more of a single-family experience with a little property. In communities that have allowed secondary suites, or unique options such as “carriage house” accommodation or garden suites, these mortgage-helpers allow younger buyers even more options. editor@saanichnews.com
