Andrew Pederson, left, Alex Munroe, Darren Beaumont and Davis Beaumont of the Landlubber Pub and Liquor Store, are eyeing up a few handy items they can strip for parts to construct a craft to crush their competitors when they take to the waves this weekend for the 2014 Silly Boat Regatta.

Silly sailors suit up for annual fundraiser By Karl yu ThE NEwS bULLETiN

P

eople will be sinking, swimming and floating for a good cause when the 2014 Silly Boat Regatta takes place on Sunday (July 13). The Nanaimo Child Development Centre fundraiser will see people constructing boats – silly boats as it were – and racing on the waters off Maffeo Sutton Park. This is the second go-around for Andrew Pederson and the Landlubber Pub team and he sees the regatta as a good way to support the centre. Pederson’s team won its heat last year and finished fourth overall.

The team’s boat theme is closely tied to the pub name. “Last year, we participated and we found success with our very streamlined, limited model,” said Pederson. “We use some big tires. We’re kind of a pirate-themed, landlubber, ‘Yar’ pub kind of thing. We have a mascot on top – it’s a parrot in a basket. It’s just four guys on the boat rowing as best we can.” Nanaimo Filipino Canadian Association president Maru Schwager and her team will be embarking on its maiden voyage. She said taking part in the race is a good way for the organization to make a difference and be a part of the community.

The Conference Board of Canada says a recent study paints a positive economic picture for Nanaimo. Nanaimo was included in its Mid-Sized Cities Outlook 2014 report at the request of Sasha Angus, Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation CEO, to provide a third-party perspective on the local economy. The report provides economic forecasts for eight cities, including Nanaimo; Lethbridge, Red Deer and Medicine Hat, Alta.; Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.; Timmins and Sault St. Marie, Ont.; and Brandon, Man.; that contributed financially to the research. “It allows us to put ourselves in context compared to other centres of our size,” Angus said. The report anticipates Nanaimo’s economic growth will hit 2.1 per cent for 2014 – an encouraging improvement over the previous three years which posted economic growth of 1.5 per cent. About 2,000 people are expected to immigrate to the city between 2014-15, pushing the population for greater

Nanaimo, including Cedar, Lantzville and other outlying communities, over the 100,000 mark. Finance, insurance and real estate is expected to start recovering this year. In fact, the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board recently posted the best June housing sales figures for the Island since 2007. Angus said housing sales indicate more people are finding full-time jobs – employment is expected to slip through the remainder of 2014, but bounce back in 2015 – which boosts economic confidence overall. Much of that confidence is coming from the professional, science and technology and manufacturing sectors. “I think it confirms what we’ve seen. Anecdotally, as well as the data that we’re seeing, which is obviously strengthening economic conditions, a rise in our growth rate ... [is] in large part due to a number of our businesses that export goods and services around the world,” Angus said. “The lower Canadian dollar certainly helps for those types of businesses and what it means is a transition from part-time employment to more full-time employment.” To learn more, please visit the Conference Board of Canada website at www.conferenceboard.ca and click on Mid-Sized Cities Outlook 2014. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Board votes to keep nine trustees By Karl yu the News bulletiN

The Nanaimo school district board has voted against reducing the number of trustees to seven from nine. Trustee Donna Allen proposed the motion at the June regular meeting and the board voted eight to one, with board chairwoman Dot Neary the lone trustee dissenting. The reduction would have netted the school district an annual savings of $45,000. Tr u s t e e J a m i e B re n n a n pointed to the area of the district as the reasoning behind his vote. “I thought that nine trustees are the appropriate amount for a district of our size geographically and also the complexity of the regions. We have the community of Lantzville, the town of Ladysmith, the regional district, Cedar plus the City of Nanaimo. “To address the needs and interests of those very parts of the district requires the number of trustees that we currently have,” Brennan said. He also proposed a motion recommending incoming trustees review board composition, with regards to representation based on a system that would see the district subdivided, after they take office following the November municipal elections. “There is no foregone conclusion. They would have to do some research and analysis but it would ensure, if they adopted such a model, that there [would be] sort of a guarantee of representation from the smaller regions of the district,” Brennan said. The school district had scheduled a meeting on June 18 to hear public input regarding the board reduction but it was cancelled due to lack of presentations. According to Donna Reimer, school district spokeswoman, there were 15 written responses submitted regarding the proposal. The Regional District of Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Lantzville were amongst those providing input. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

they’re related to spillway capacity and that his society considers the measures intrusive and expensive. It stepped away to distance itself from a decision and to be able to talk more openly about the dams, emergency measures and potential costs and options tied to the structures, according to Solomon, who said his group wants the committee to take time to explore other solutions. Committee facilitator Katherine Gordon declined to comment on what the absence of the park preservation society means for the work of the technical group, but Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan called their absence unfortunate. “I am just disappointed that people would drop out now at the 11th hour, in advance of the report,“ he said. The technical committee was struck by Nanaimo city council last year to investigate potential solutions for the Colliery dams, which were flagged as being at an extreme risk of failing in a major earthquake or flood.

A citizens group has distanced itself from Nanaimo’s Colliery Dam Technical Committee, over options it says the public won’t accept. The Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society has temporarily withdrawn from the committee tasked with finding solutions for the century-old dams. Society spokesman Jeff Solomon said the committee seemed like it was coming to the point of making a decision on the dams, despite members not reaching consensus. The society doesn’t support the options currently being looked at and doesn’t believe the public will accept them either. While Solomon wouldn’t go into details about the choices, he confirmed

Committee members, which include the society, Snuneymuxw and city representatives, have been at the table for eight months and have spent close to $800,000 on research work. Last week the preservation society announced it left discussions, suggesting it had no real authority in the decision-making process and also expressing dissatisfaction with the committee’s lack of transparency and current options. “I know this is heading down a road that’s going to blow up very badly…” Solomon said. “They are leaning toward a solution that wouldn’t be acceptable to the general public. It certainly wouldn’t have been acceptable to us.” The society is trying to meet with city manager Ted Swabey to discuss its concerns. Toby Seward, the city’s director of social and protective services, said an information report is expected to be released to the public this week.

A knife-wielding robbery suspect is either running around with the winning combination to a lot of cash or a stay in prison after making off with scratch-and-win tickets last Thursday. Nanaimo Mounties responded to a robbery at the College Grocer convenience store on Wakesiah Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. after a man produced a knife, grabbed an undisclosed number of scratch lottery tickets and fled. The store clerk chased the suspect for a short distance before an RCMP dog team took up the track, but lost it where police believe the suspect got into a vehicle and escaped. No one was injured. The suspect is described as Caucasian, 20-25 years old, standing about 5-foot-5 with a thin build. He wore a white baseball cap, black and white bandana, black long-sleeve shirt, black long shorts and black and lime-green gloves. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to please call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or through the organization’s website at www.nanaimocrime stoppers.com.

Teams focused on fun sion of programs and services for children identified with special needs. Boats will be the draw at the Silly Boat Regatta on Sunday (July 13) but there will be other entertainment as well. Wally’s World will be set up on the Maffeo Sutton Park site for youngsters. “In Wally’s World, it’s free children’s activities, informational booths and things like that for families, so it’s just a fun kids area,” said Erica Horsfield, Nanaimo Child Development Centre communications officer. While the adults will take to the waters at 1 p.m., there will be a chance for children to take part in a regatta of their own, according to Michelle Kocourek, centre resource development coordinator. “The Children’s Mini Regatta is in the inner lagoon and [kids] have a mini boat kit, which they can build and decorate with feathers and paint and all sorts of stuff like that,” she said. There will also be live music and dance performances.

The association’s boat will be a nod to its motherland as it will be modelled after a bahay kubo – a nipa hut or stilt house. While Schwager did say the association will be trying its best, she also said the team is above all else aiming to have a good time. “We will try our best to win something but I think the main thing is for us, it’s just to have fun and be able to help the Nanaimo Child Development Centre to raise funds,” Schwager said. “If we win, that’s kind of a bonus, but if not, I think the main thing is we help and have fun.” The Silly Boat Regatta began in 1984 when a radio station put on an event to aid the Show You Care Society. The development centre became sole organizers of the fundraiser in 1998 and raised more than $122,000 last year. Money raised is used for the provi-

Outdoor retailer putting down roots with Nanaimo store

Cabela’s, the w o r l d ’s l a rg e s t retailer of hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor gear has put down roots in north Nanaimo. The old Canadian Tire building is being renovated into the retailer’s new home with more than 4,600 square metres of retail space. It’s also Cabela’s first store in British Columbia and seventh store in Canada. “We haven’t set a specific date yet, but construction’s on schedule and we

have it scheduled to open this fall sometime,” said Nathan Borowski, Cabela’s spokesman. The company plans to hire about 150 full-time employees to staff the Nanaimo store. Cabela’s opened its first Canadian store in Winnipeg, Man., in 2007. The location might seem odd, but Borowski said the company determines where its strong customer bases are by tracking its online sales shipments, plus Cabela’s already had a distribution centre in Winnipeg. The company has since branched out to Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario and is eyeing a store location in Moncton, N.B. Nanaimo was pin-

for fun, so we definitely try to create that atmosphere and our culture within our stores,” Borowski said. “We try to really engulf customers in an outdoor-feeling experience as soon as they come in with museum quality wildlife displays – a lot of our stores feature mountain replicas – a lot of interactive and

educational kiosks and touch screen displays. “We host events in our stores, seminars and courses where we actually encourage customers and mem-

Borowski said Cabela’s will offer something for everyone and has also expanded into outdoor hobbies such as gold panning, geocaching and also carries a line of metal detectors. “Part of that is we do a lot of research on where our stores are located, what activities are popular in that area and what we believe our customers will spend their time outdoors doing and adjust our product offering accordingly,” Borowski said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Understanding R.F.I.D. Products

In this day and age we now are faced with another thing to worry about; electronic pickpocketing and indentity theft. There is now a way to protect ourselves and keep personal information private. Pharmasave at Westhill has a wide selection of wallets, passport holders, and waist and neck stashes that are embedded with Radio Frequency Identification Devices, commonly called R.F.I.D. The chips are in passports, hotel keys, electronic gate/door keys, credit cards, Government and military identification cards and many other forms of I.D. cards we carry. The R.F.I.D. chips are encased in a mesh cloth for flexability and have a copper/nickel coating. We also carry a fantastic assortment of Baggallini purses that are great for the traveller. Baggallinis are organizational, functional, flexible and very high quality. There are compartments to make it easier to carry everything you need. The fabric in the purses is lead-free and tested for unsafe chemicals and metals. Feel confident and secure while travelling. Use the attached coupon for 15% off your choice of BERYL FESER Baggallini.

When I got my newspaper route, my little brothers always wanted to come along. At first I thought it was a drag but then they started to help and it was great. We even decided to get a bigger route together. Now we share the work and make more money.

Nanaimo is attracting its share of anglers, thanks to the resurgence of fish in coastal waters. Fishermen from across Vancouver Island and the lower mainland are casting out in local waters, according to members of Mid-Island Sport Fishing Advisory Committee. Clyde Wicks, a fisherman and chairman of the advisory committee, said salmon were disappearing in 1994-95 and up until two years ago, fishing was lousy. He recalls having the only boat out on the water around Five Fingers Island in 2011. This year, Wicks counted 70 vessels around the same area and he says it’s all thanks to the return of salmon. “In the past couple months [we] had guys tow boats down from Campbell River to fish here, that’s how good the fishing was,” he said, adding that fishing off the coast of Nanaimo has returned to the good old days. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has seen salmon stocks rebound since 2009, as a result of good ocean conditions and fishery restrictions. And the positive fishing reports and good catches have more people wanting to cast out, says Rick Ferguson, fisherman and sport advisory committee member. He has seen new boaters, as well as people from other parts of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, come to the Harbour City to fish. Stephen Vavrik, fishing tackle salesman at Harbour Chandler Ltd., has also seen the benefit of a good fishery. The store has tripled the staff in its tackle department and increased its stock 20 per cent each year since 2012.

Rain fails to capsize dragon boaters Boathouse earns By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

Rain did not seem to deter the festivities at the 12th annual Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival at Maffeo Sutton Park this weekend. Jan Hastings, festival volunteer coordinator, said things went well despite the liquid sunshine. “Well the rain wasn’t invited and the mayor [John Ruttan] did tell us that he took care of the rain for us, it makes but I guess it just for calm has to be a little wetter,” Hastwaters, so bit ings said. “I hear the water the racers [was] calm and are happy. beautiful [Saturday], so that’s one thing the rain does, it makes for calm waters, so the racers are happy,” she said. The festival provided the perfect opportunity for the defending B.C. Seniors Games’ women’s 55-plus dragon boat racing champions, the Nanaimo-based Mid-Island Masters, to fine tune for the 2014 Games at

Langley in September. Coach Lesley Heavey said she liked what she saw from her team at the festival on Saturday. “The first race was OK but I just watched the second race and it was superb,” said Heavey. “Their timing was great, their strength was great, they were awesome in their second race. I’m so proud of them.” The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival

is considered one of city’s biggest events and centres on the fight to end breast cancer. “The reason we put on the festival every year is to raise funds for the hospital foundation for breast cancer research and also for hospice in Nanaimo,” Hastings said. There were 72 teams taking part this year, she said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

parents were wanting the field to be closer to the main school building,” said Brennan. Teachers across the province are currently on strike, but Brennan said there would be discussions with the Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association as well as the CUPE local asking them to refrain from disruption. Mike Ball, teachers’ association president, said there is a low probability of teachers blocking work. “It is unlikely that we will hinder a contractor, but the site may well be picketed at times,” Ball wrote in an e-mail. There will be an exercise path around the field, likely composed of crushed gravel. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

The Nanaimo Community Boathouse is in the running to win a major funding boost. A boathouse project at Nanaimo’s Loudon Park is the only B.C. initiative to win a top spot in this year’s Kraft Celebration Tour – a national funding contest aimed at improving places to play. The win, announced by Kraft Canada this week, will see TSN do a live broadcast of SportsCentre in Nanaimo this August. Those behind the boathouse – the Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club and Nanaimo Rowing Club – will also receive $25,000 for landing in the Top 10 and a total $100,000 if they are the top vote earners in a two-day online race in late July. It’s exciting news for Joyce Mark, commodore of the canoe and kayak club. The clubs have dreamt of a new building for the past two decades. The current facility, a former washroom and picnic area built about 30 years ago, hosts more than 1,500 people each year and is “falling apart,” according to Mark. The club’s boats are also stored in a caged area that’s open to the elements and causes the crafts to deteriorate prematurely. The City of Nanaimo has offered $300,000 toward construction of a new $900,000 boathouse, but the organizations have to raise the rest. So far they’ve generated $20,000. “This [prize] money is big for us. It is 100plus beer and burgers that would take countless hours and years of organization and manpower,” Mark said in an e-mail to the News Bulletin. “It would mean that we are getting closer to our goal to provide the future public a place to paddle and row at a low cost.” The new Loudon Park boathouse would offer public washrooms, training space and boat storage, as well as a potential meeting room. It would be built at an existing playground, leading to the creation of a new play area for children. Kelly Fleming, brand manager for Kraft Canada, said Nanaimo was chosen from among 500 entries because of the impact of the boathouse, benefit of the prize money and community passion, spirit and pride. For making it this far, Nanaimo will get a community barbecue and an hour-long live broadcast by TSN’s SportsCentre Aug. 16. It also has the chance to win the grand prize if it collects the most votes July 21-22. To cast a vote, please go to www. kraftcelebrationtour.ca. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Meter parking makes cents

People should have no problem finding parking anywhere in Nanaimo. City council received a staff report last week regarding a downtown parking strategy, and the report contains sensible recommendations. The document was compiled in response to requests the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association made earlier this year. The BIA asked for more meters, plus free parking in parkades, to try to free up spaces on downtown streets. City staff is recommending more parking meters, increased parking fees and free parking only at one parkade. The city calculates that the extra quarters and loonies it charges will add up to $875,000 per year. That money wouldn’t go into general revenue, but would rather go toward maintenance and construction of parking facilities and benefit taxpayers that way. Basically the city would be nickel-anddiming people who want to drive their vehicles downtown. Parking will still be inexpensive, and those who can afford the price of gas, insurance and car payments these days won’t balk at 50 cents here, a dollar there for parking. We’re not sure that merchants are correct in their conclusion that parking is a perceived problem downtown, but if installing more meters bring them peace of mind, then let’s do it. Even if we’re correcting a problem that doesn’t exist, we might be making proactive improvements to parking infrastructure. More expensive parking rates also seem to align with the municipality’s transportation master plan. The move won’t have an immediate impact, but with time and inflation, it might eventually push a few residents out of their cars and get them walking, cycling and busing. There are signs that downtown revitalization is working in Nanaimo. We hope people will keep going there in droves, and that when they do, they’ll never have to drive around and around, looking for a place to park. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Or the four-way stops in Harewood, which don’t mean ‘stop’ at all. You only have to log on to Twitter, or read our Beefs and Bouquets section, to see how badly people in Nanaimo drive. Or it might affect animals and the environment more than people. Some groups are claiming the higher speeds will increase the number of human/wildlife crashes. Or that driving at higher speeds will increase greenhouse gases. Driving has always been and probably always will be a source of freedom. It used to drive me to distraction to get stuck behind someone doing less than the speed limit. But in my old age I’ve learned to enjoy the drive itself, rather than the destination. This summer, when I take my annual pilgrimage to the Interior, I might be one of those people – the kind who takes it at her own pace, in the slow lane (or, as I’ve heard it described, the calm lane). I hope you’re not too irritated when you blow by me at 120 km/h. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Teachers are striking for what’s fair and just To the Editor,

Re: A brief history of teacher demands in B.C., Opinion, June 26. The columnist makes it seem as if the only reason us teachers are on strike is for more money. What the columnist failed to mention is class size and composition. In 2002 when the B.C. Liberals came to power, they illegally tore up the teachers’ contract, taking out class size and compositions protection. Since then, twice, the Supreme Court has ruled that they acted illegally and that they must pay back the money. The Liberal government’s response to not repaying the money is that they don’t have any. Since 2002, education as a percentage of the provincial budget has dropped from 26 per cent to 15 per cent. Simultaneously the government has cut corporate tax rates to the lowest in Canada. The money has gone from educating, protecting and caring for children to protecting corporate interests. The fact that there is no money for education is an ideological choice, not a fiscal one. Teachers see daily the results of this stolen funding. Kids who need a little help, don’t get it. Kids who are vulnerable, poor, handicapped are crowded into classrooms without support. Teachers are striking for these students and for what is fair and just.

To the Editor,

Re: A brief history of teacher demands in B.C., Opinion, June 26. What a despicable piece of propaganda. So you think teachers are overpaid, do you? Well, why don’t you go in a classroom and teach for a year. Then tell us how easy it is. Oh yes, by the way, the CEOs of Canadian and American corporations each make $72,000 in the first week of the year, hardly a nip in the bud to the millions they make on our taxpayers’ back. Corporate welfare, I think it’s called.

Re: Let SPCA build its own shelter, Editorial, June 26. If there is one organization that deserves public funding, it is the SPCA. It not only provides protection for animals but it is also the ‘canary’ test of a healthy society.

Re: All faiths permitted in civic facilities, June 26. The issue of the religious beliefs held by the citizens of Nanaimo was never an issue until it was made so by they themselves. They now claim to be the victims. City council took action to keep an event sponsored by an anti-LGBT company and featuring an anti-LGBT speaker, out of Nanaimo. My neighbour had tickets to the event and told me he’d never have bought them to begin with had he known about the facts. Nanaimo has nothing to

To the Editor,

To the Editor,

I consider myself a follower of Jesus, having dedicated my life and trying to live according to His teachings. So I wonder about all the rants concerning city council’s statement that events associated with “divisiveness, homophobia, or other expressions of hate” won’t have our support or use of facilities. Did the council apply that policy correctly in the case of Leadercast? I don’t know, but presume councillors acted in good faith. How that became an attack on Christianity or on our rights is a mystery to me. Perhaps it’s time for Christians to take a deep breath, open the gospels, and stop throwing around loaded words like ‘bigot,’ or threatening retaliation. WWJD?

FUTURE SHOP – Correction Notice In the July 4 flyer, page 12, the Canon EOS 70D 20.2MP DSLR Camera With 18-135mm IS STM Lens (WebID: 10246850) was advertised with an incorrect price. Please be advised that the CORRECT price is $1499.99 NOT $1449.99, as previously advertised. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.

Re: All faiths permitted in civic facilities, June 26. I am pleased that city council has rescinded the motion that cancelled the Leadercast event at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. But its justification for doing so has missed the mark. Council has stated that the intent of the original motion has been misunderstood. This is inaccurate and misleading. Citizens of Nanaimo and Canada clearly understood that council cancelled Leadercast because one sponsor and one speaker hold opinions that some find offensive. What council and some in our city still do not seem to understand is that holding such opinions is not illegal, morally abhorrent, nor does it make you hateful toward others. Nanaimo, it is time for us to put this sorry

mess behind us and work together to build a community that truly honours diversity and protects the dignity of all who live here. Watch your words. Be kind. Love one another.

Idol contestant branches out beyond music Texan planting roots in British Columbia after years in the United States

“I didn’t take it probably near as serious as I should have taken it,” Caldwell said. “We didn’t know what it was becoming until we stepped off the stage and out of the show and then realized ‘oh my god all these people know who we are,’ and that was really cool.” Although Caldwell didn’t win the competition, she would eventually go on a nationwide tour with her follow Idol contestants and venture far outside of her comfort zone by becoming a television host for a variety of channels, including Fox Sports Network.

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

W

hen former American Idol contestant Kimberly Caldwell was a little girl she dreamed of appearing on Ed McMahon’s Star Search television show. “Every episode I would sit right in front of the TV with my nose touching the screen,” Caldwell recalled. “I would tell my mom, ‘One day I am going to be there. One day I am going to do that.’ I was just a kid with a dream.” The native of Katy, Texas, didn’t have to wait long for her dream to come true because at the age of 11 she appeared on the very show she grew up watching. “You know how American Idol is to kids these days? Where they’re like ‘Oh my god I want to be on American Idol one day.’ Well, that was me with Star Search,” Caldwell said. A decade later, her career would take off thanks to her performances on Idol in 2003. “That was definitely my stepping stone into Hollywood and into the industry,” Caldwell recalled. Caldwell will be performing tonight (July 8) the Port Theatre alongside her fiancé Jordan Harvey, who is also a left fullback for the Vancouver Whitecaps, as part of the third annual Vancouver Island Coast Salish Hope and Health event. “It’s going to be an honour to be a part of Hope and Help again and I hope that everybody comes out and joins us,” Caldwell told the News Bulletin. The event is dedicated to inspiring First Nations youths throughout the province and will feature a number of guest speakers including former NHLer Theo Fleury and Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson. Caldwell began singing when she was five years old. While on the Ed McMahon show, which featured a number of other talented young artists such as Beyoncé, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Alanis Morissette and Britney Spears, Caldwell set a record for the most wins by a junior vocalist. “It is a fun piece of trivia about myself that I will always be proud of,” she said. “It was my Idol when I was little. It was something that I was so excited to do.” After her time on Ed McMahon, Caldwell moved to Missouri, where she landed a role as a feature performer in a production called Country Tonite. “We took a couple of months off in the winter time and in the slow

Quickfacts

Caldwell, whose first album came out in 2011, recently released three new singles, Doin’ me Right, Tied Together and On the Weekend, which are all part of an upcoming record. Today, she finds herself living in Vancouver, where she spends her time acting, singing and watching her future husband play at B.C. Place. “I don’t know anything about soccer,” she said, laughing. “I just watch and clap whenever they score.” Caldwell, who also acts, said she spends more of her time in Vancouver working on her acting. “When I am in Vancouver, I don’t work on music that much. I’ve really focused on acting,” she said. In addition to her three new singles and acting, Caldwell has released her own leather handbag line called Stage Presents and is about to open up her own makeover studio on Beach Avenue in Vancouver. “I just buy leather and I learned how to sew leather and how to do all the hardware. I actually hand-make all the leather handbags,” Caldwell said. Caldwell also has a number of tattoos, including a large one on her back that contains lyrics from a song she wrote but never recorded. “It is called With You I Can. I have five sisters and a lot of women in my life that have inspired me and have been there for me through all the ups and downs,” Caldwell said. “With You I Can is kind of a song about just being there for your people and if they weren’t there for you then you couldn’t do without them.” Caldwell performs at the Port Theatre tonigth at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. T-men storm back to beat Thunder I

SENIOR A lacrosse defeats Langley by 15-12 score. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Nanaimo Timbermen turned things around and came up with a win. The city’s senior A Western Lacrosse Association club defeated the Langley Thunder 15-12 on Saturday at Frank Crane Arena, erasing a 6-1 first-period deficit with seven goals in the second period and seven more in the third. “That’s the thing about lacrosse, right? It’s just momentum swings…” said Brody Eastwood, T-men forward. “You’ve just got to try to stay with it once you’ve got it.” Kaleb Toth, the team’s coach, said the Timbermen stepped up their game in the second and third periods, playing more aggressively on defence and moving the ball offensively to spread the Thunder’s D. “It’s nice when the guys work hard and they’re rewarded for their hard work,” Toth said. Cayle Ratcliff, T-men alternate captain, said the team dug deep and didn’t quit. “It shows that we’re learning and we’re taking a step in the right direction,” he said. Ratcliff said the coach has been stressing that players need to be confident on the floor. “We’re better than the way we’ve been playing and [coach] said that again to us in between

the first and second and I think the guys are starting to believe that,” Ratcliff said. A turning point came when Thunder goalie Brodie MacDonald high-sticked Timbermen opponents twice in the second period and got penalized and ejected. Seven different T-men scored in the third period against Thunder backup Mike Lowe. The 15-goal outburst was more offence than Nanaimo managed in its last three games combined. Toth said since guys had been struggling to score, they were becoming hesitant to shoot but that started to change in Saturday’s comeback. “It was nice to see the guys shoot when they were supposed to shoot and their shot selection was excellent,” the coach said. Ratcliff led the T-men with a hat trick, Paul Brebber and Macgregor Johnston had two goals and three assists each and Doug Langlois also tallied twice. Top draft pick Eastwood scored in his Timbermen debut and other goals came from Blake Kenny, Tyson Roe, Jake Emms, Kyle Hofer and Myles Kenny. Zak Boychuk earned the win as shots were 45-41 in favour of the home team. GAME ON … The Timbermen (3-8-1) play road games on Thursday (July 10) against the New Westminster Salmonbellies and Saturday against the Coquitlam Adanacs. Note that Nanaimo’s next home game on July 19, against the Salmonbellies, will be played at Duncan’s Island Savings Centre at 7 p.m. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

No-hitter highlights win streak BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Nanaimo Timbermen player Brad Mazzocato takes a shot on goal in transition during Saturday’s Western Lacrosse Association game against the Langley Thunder at Frank Crane Arena.

Top draft choice ready to contribute to team’s playoff push He wasn’t exactly a trade-deadline acquisition, but he may have arrived in time to help the Timbermen. Brody Eastwood, the team’s first choice in this past winter’s Western Lacrosse Association draft, made his debut on Saturday at Frank

Crane Arena as the T-men beat the Langley Thunder 15-12. He scored a goal in his first game. “It definitely helps the offence; it gives them confidence,” said Kaleb Toth, T-men coach. “Brody, he demands a lot of attention from defensive players and that frees up

the other guys to get open looks.” Eastwood said he’ll work his hardest and thinks the T-men can continue to win and do some damage this WLA season. “[We’ll take it] one at a time, but playoffs, for sure, that’s the goal,” he said.

Not only did the Nanaimo Pirates win a bunch more ball games, they were unhittable. The Hub City Paving Pirates won four of six on the road the past few days, capped off by win Sunday against the Abbotsford Cardinals in which pitcher Robert Busch threw a no-hitter. The Pirates split with the Victoria Eagles on Thursday, winning 12-1 and losing 2-1, then split with the North Shore Twins on Friday, losing 4-3 and winning 5-0. On Sunday, the Pirates swept the Cards 4-2 and 3-0. “We’ve just been putting everything together – timely hitting, defence and pitching,” Busch said. “All three of those things together you’re bound to compete in every game.” Busch’s no-no started inauspiciously, as he beaned the first batter he faced and walked the second, but he got out of trouble. As the game went along, he got some help from his defence, especially from second baseman Shawn Arabsky. Then with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh, catcher Chris Vlaj set up for a curveball, exactly what Busch wanted to throw. “Best pitch of the day,” he said. “I ended up backwards striking out the kid, froze him on a curveball, so that was the game. I was pretty pumped about that.” See ‘PIRATES’ /20

The Acme Timbermen soundly beat their biggest rivals in the last real regularseason test. The Nanaimo Acme Painting Timbermen doubled the Ladner Pioneers 10-5 on Sunday in West Coast S e n i o r L a c ro s s e Association action at Frank Crane Arena. “We started really strong and kept going,” said Steve Higgs, T-men forward. “We’ve had some pretty close games against them this season and that was the best one so it’s nice to finish on that note.” Coach Mike Maughan agreed it was one of his team’s best games of the year. That’s big for the T-men considering they were coming off a loss to the Valley Rebels last weekend. “We wanted to look at it as a way to hit the reset button,” Maughan said. “This game tonight was a big one for us for tons of reasons, whether it be [secur-

Jon Diplock, Ryan Forslund and Ryan Clark also scored. Nick Patterson only needed to make 22 saves for the win. GAME ON … The Acme T-men visit the North Shore Indians on Friday (July 11) and the Port Moody Thunder on Saturday.

The Vancouver Whitecaps professional soccer team will try to offer inspiration at their annual Hope and Health event this week. The Whitecaps will be in Nanaimo tonight (July 8) for the Hope and Health opening ceremonies at the Port Theatre. Coach Carl Robinson and players Kekuta Manneh, Steven Beitashour, Jordan Harvey and Andy O’Brien will be part of the event, as will keynote speaker Theo Fleury, a former NHL star. Hope and Health is presented by Kw’umut Lelum Child and Family Services and Lalum’utul Smun’eem Aboriginal Child and Family Service Agency and the Whitecaps visit is meant to engage and motivate First Nations youths through soccer. The opening ceremonies, from 7-9 p.m., will be open to the public at a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children, students and seniors. The Whitecaps will remain in Nanaimo the next day to lead soccer clinics that are open only to Aboriginal youths.

It took awhile for all the players and coaches to clue in about the no-hitter. “After that one rough inning we all just assumed I had a hit, so no one really knew after the game and they saw me fist pumping on the mound,” Busch said. Offence came from Aaron Page, who had a double and two RBIs, and Josh Burgmann and Arabsky who had two hits each. In the early game, Tom Negrin had a single, double and two RBIs, Burgmann and North Rainey had two hits apiece and Sam Baker earned the ‘W’ on the mound. Dad passed away quietly in the Victoria General Hospital June 23rd. He leaves behind his children Donna (Mark), Grant (Christine), Allan, and Olive (Glen). He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Brittany, Serena, and Dex, as well as his sister Silvia of Bellville Ontario. The family thanks all those who helped with his care during the past year: Tim, Ron, Debbie and the pharmacy staff at People’s Drug Mart, Dr. Tom Vally and his staff, Dr. Jenny Rajala his cardiologist, the Paramedics and First Responders, Sooke Hospice and all the home care workers that made it possible for Dad to stay in his home the last few months of his life. The family also thanks the doctors, nursing staff, and care aides at Victoria General, 6C North, for their kindness and care. There will be no service at Dad’s request. Condolences may be submitted through www.carefuneral.com. CELEBRATIONS

Concerts make city’s parks more musical

I

LUNCHTIME EVENTS will be held in Maffeo sutton and Bowen parks this summer. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

H

oping to tap into the lunchtime crowd, the City of Nanaimo’s Summer Concerts in the Park series will see afternoon performances this season. Daytime concerts run Tuesdays from July 15 to Aug. 26 at Maffeo Sutton Park from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The evening series begins Wednesday (July 9) with concerts running at the amphitheatre at Bowen Park until July 30. The venue will then switch to Maffeo Sutton, with concerts running from Aug. 6-27. Performances will run between 6 and 7:30 p.m. at both locations. Deborah Beck, city recreation coordinator, said the desire to bring energy and activity to Maffeo Sutton Park and increasing interest from artists are just some of the reasons for the extra concerts. “We have some other concerts that go on with the [Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association] up at the China Steps during one of the days of the week and we thought we would just create that energy throughout the whole week, so we thought we’d bring that in on a Tuesday. We have so many people that want to be a part of our concerts in the park that we thought, why not expand? “We have lots of people that come to it. It’s a great place to come and enjoy your lunch time. We’re hoping we can invite the tourists as well as the public that live here and work here, to come down and enjoy lunch and the concerts,” Beck said. She explained there will be a variety of musical genres, with rock, hip hop, orchestra and prairie folk amongst some of the styles.

KARL YU/The News BULLeTiN

Musical artists such as Melissa Hill, left, will be featured in the City of Nanaimo’s Summer Concerts in the Park series, running from Wednesday (July 9) to Aug. 27 at Maffeo Sutton and Bowen parks. City recreation coordinator Deborah Beck is one of the program organizers.

The Melissa Hill Trio will play the lunchtime concert finale on Aug. 26. Hill said she enjoys the configuration at Maffeo Sutton and is looking forward to performing. “It’s definitely always exciting and different when you play outside because you have different sound issues and you have passersby, so you’re not playing to a specific audience,” Hill said, adding she plans to cover a wide range of music at her per-

formance, including reggae. Regardless of whether people attend evening or noon concerts, Beck said it’s ideal for a picnic and recommends people bring lawn chairs. “It’s a fun event to do with the family, the whole family, and we hope to see people down there,” Beck said.
