Male’s body recovered after Gray Creek drowning BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
An Idaho body recovery expert was on location near Gray Creek on Monday morning in an attempt to bring up the body of a 25-year-old male who drowned in Kootenay Lake June 30. “Gene Ralston arrived yesterday but the wind made it too difficult to get out onto the lake with divers,” Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. “They were going to go out at eight this morning.” Shortly after the interview, Gollan updated the situation. “The body has been located and is currently being brought to the surface,” he said. The man, who turned 25 the day before his drowning, was diving from a popular spot with a friend when he apparently hit the water awkwardly. “His friend said he heard a loud noise and then saw him floating face down, not moving,” Gollan said. The friend jumped in the water, but was unable to pull the man out before the body sank straight down. They had been diving at that spot for years, Gollan said. See RECOVERY, page 5

he BC Conservation Officer Service has released a composite sketch of the suspect (right) in the October 2013 illegal shooting of four mule deer. The shooter is described as being a white male, slightly tanned, about five feet, 10 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He has dark brown eyes and jet black hair, which was neatly trimmed, short on the sides. He also had a small soul patch or goatee on his chin. “He had high cheek
bones and a straight nose, and he spoke softly, in a polite manner,” conservation officer James Barber said. “At the time, he was wearing dark pants and a camo coat.” The suspect might have driven off in a silver Jetta-like car with a black ski rack on top. The vehicle was seen parked nearby and disappeared a short time later. Anyone with information can call the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-9527277 or Creston RCMP at 250-428-9313.
Calls for Creston RCMP service down in 2013 BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Calls for RCMP service dropped by about 10 per cent in 2013, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan has reported to Creston town council and the Creston Valley services committee. A total of 3,660 calls were received last year, down from 4,008 in 2012. “In 2012 our calls were higher than in previous years, so I can’t say this decline in calls is a trend,” Gollan said while presenting his annual policing report. Fridays and Saturdays, not surprisingly, are the busiest days for police, while Mondays are the quietest. Monday through Thursday result in almost identical call numbers. The largest number of calls are made during business hours. The busiest months are July and August. Gollan said nearly half of calls to the police are made from the Town of Creston (1,061), with

the rural areas combining to make up the balance, the largest proportion from Erickson and points west. Each year, the local detachment commander consults with local stakeholders to set policing priorities, he said. For 2012-13, he said, priorities with town were to increase police presence downtown, add bike patrols and to improve partnerships with the town and community groups. “We have had a good start on this latter initiative and we are continuing to attend several community meetings, these include Creston Co-ordination for Women’s Safety, Creston Valley Community Network meetings and Creston and RDCK (Regional District of Central Kootenay) emergency planning meetings,” Gollan said. Also, a fraud awareness program was presented to the public in March in partnership with Edward Jones representative Kerry Ross and Lectric Avenue, a Canyon Street electronics and computer store. Increased visibility downtown and bike patrols are a challenge, he said, because of staffing issues. When Gollan made his presentation he had one constable off with an injury, one on long-term disability and one with ongoing health issues who has planned his retirement for later this year. One of the detachment’s two corporals has also recently announced retirement plans. “On paper we have a complement of 15 officers, but we are not often at that level. Add in vacation time, illnesses and the time it takes to replace staff and it can be a real challenge ensuring we are ready to meet our day to day needs.” On the positive side of the staffing equation, he said that one general investigator is no longer working exclusively on the Bountiful file, which is now before a special prosecutor.

From page 1 Louie, who describes herself as a bigtime library patron as she pursues a science degree, graduated from Prince Charles Secondary School in 2010, then started her post-secondary education at Montana’s Salish Kootenai College. She has extensive family connections in Montana, where her mother, Angie, was born and raised. “I didn’t really know anyone at the university last year and it was a big transition going from a community to college to university. But this year I have three cousins from Montana who will be attending, plus I made friends last year, so I am really excited about returning.”
“Part of what I want to focus on is how to build stronger connections between the library and the Lower Kootenay Band,” she said. “I want to try to involve others from LKB as much as I possibly can.” While LKB residents do use the library, Louie said that transport is a major issue. “I know [chief librarian Aaron Francis] would really like to find a way to address this — he is very committed to connecting our members with this library,” she said. “Lower Kootenay has a community bus, but we need to find volunteers to drive it.” Following in the footsteps of her older sister, Misty, who worked at the library last year (and who is pursuing studies in Washington), Louie wants to work with Francis to create a permanent display that

From page 2 In the longer term, he said, he would like to have an additional general investigative team headed by a corporal. “Their mandate would be our prolific offenders, as this had proven to reduce the amount of crime in our area. As you can see by the statistics, by targeting the prolific offenders we cut down crime significantly.” Gollan said he is working with Creston Fire Rescue to discuss the joint acquisition of a thermal imaging device that can monitor heat sources. “It would serve a dual purpose,” he said. “Police can use it to detect heat sources for marijuana grow op investigations and the fire department uses it for search and rescue purposes.” After consulting with the town, Gollan said his priorities for the coming year now include an increase in drug enforcement and education. Of particular interest to council members was his comment that town financial director Steffan Klassen had recently discovered an anomaly in the provincial billing system that forces Creston to pay for the costs of keeping prisoners not arrested within town limits. “There is a reimbursement pool that is distributed to communities, but it only pays for a small percentage of the actual costs,” Klassen said. “When a guard is brought in to watch over a prisoner that really isn’t the town’s, it ends up costing us a fair amount, perhaps as much as $40,000 last year.” “I wasn’t aware of how this actually works,” Gollan admitted. “But it certainly isn’t fair.” “Unfortunately it really only affects small communities, so I am not sure that we have much of a chance of getting the province to

It is important for me to learn that I don’t have to do everything on my own.” Her last day on the job will be Aug. 2, allowing Louie time to prepare for her return to university classes, which start later in the month.

We will discount your fee to $40.00 if you mail your request with a cheque in the amount of $40.00 to: Osprey Medical Clinic 12-1000 NW Blvd, Creston, BC, V0B 1G7 Former patients requiring their medical records be transferred to another medical office must complete a transfer form and mail it to the above office. Patients requesting their file transfer acknowledge there is fee for this transfer in the amount of $50.00. The above fees are based on the Doctors of BC revised fees for uninsured services effective April 1, 2014, which suggests a basic fee of $33.20 plus direct costs such as courier services and photocopying. The fee suggested for photocopying is $1.55 per page for the first 10 pages and $0.30 per page thereafter. Of the over two hundred files requested and delivered to date, the average file size is well over 20 pages with many files over 100 pages. Although physicians can only ask for a fee once the transfer has been made, the direct costs are less when the patient voluntarily pays in advance on the same basis as patients wanting a copy of their records themselves. Please note that as of June 24, 2014 at 10:30 am all requests for files that Osprey Medical Clinic has received by patients for themselves or to be transferred to another medical physician or clinic have been prepared and delivered. Once a written request has been received by our office we are required to deliver the records within a reasonable period of time, which is generally considered to be 30 working days from the date of the request.

YA hosting event series BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
With one event down and six more to go, the Kootenay branch of Young Agrarians (YA) is inviting farmers, the agriculture-curious and the public to visit east, west and central Kootenay farms this summer. The next event runs Saturday, with a work bee and potluck being held at Dirty Beds Produce in Crawford Bay. “We will all be pitching in to the best of our ability — whether that means weeding, building new garden beds or just cheerleading,” said Laura Hannant, who co-ordinates YA with Nigel Francis. “We will also be marking a momentous occasion for the young farmers — the grand opening of their new farming venture.” Dirty Beds farmers Jessie King and Elisa Rose are teaming up this summer to SPIN (small-plot intensive) farm on five different sites in Crawford Bay. They are growing a wide range of produce — including beets, carrots, kale, peas, chives, cabbage, squash, zucchinis, tomatoes, corn, cantaloupe and much more — that will be sold to residents, restaurants and the Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School lunch program. “We also offer, I hope, the idea that sustainability within this very special community is possible, and it can, is and will continue to happen when people get together and contribute their different talents, strengths, creativity and hard work towards a common goal, for the good of the whole,” said Rose. The process of starting their venture has offered an interesting learning curve to King and Rose. “We’re not following any predetermined or learned structure of doing this; both of us have really been winging it from the start,” said Rose. “We don’t have a lot of gardening education, so we are learning as we go and making things up as we go along, so the process is very organic (just like the food). We get inspiration from others who are doing similar things in other places, as well as tons of support from the East Shore community. I’m actually surprised how unique this is, as it seems like a really obvious thing to be doing.” The duo is looking forward to the weekend’s YA event for a couple of reasons. “First of all, to be honest, I’m looking forward to help with all the weeds,” said Rose. “Second,

seeing what we are doing through other people’s eyes helps me get a broader perspective on it all. All the interest that is being shown to our little project is really humbling. Who knew farming could be so exciting and inspiring?” YA kicked off its summer event series on July 4 with a berry planting party at Beasley’s Chuckleberry organic farm and community, and will continue with tours, potlucks and more at Willow Springs Organic Farm in Pend Oreille (July 26), Tricycle Acres in Slocan Valley (Aug. 7), White Crow Farm in Winlaw (Aug. 15-17) and Edible Acres in Windermere (Aug. 24). The series wraps up in the Creston Valley on Sept. 7 with the 26-kilometre Tour de Farm, which will connect Kootenay Meadows Dairy, Full Circle Organic Farm, Mo and Mikey Farms, JRD Farm, Root and Vine Acres and, hopefully, a winery, with visitors touring by bicycle.

“So: dairy, grain farm, market garden, orchard, greenhouse and livestock farm, vineyard — all in our valley, all in one day,” said Hannant. “We hope the event will showcase our incredible agricultural diversity and maybe even inspire young agrarian hopefuls to put down roots here in Creston.” And that’s one key goal of the Young Agrarians program. “By working with young Kootenay farmers and opening the gates of Kootenay farms, we are giving people a chance to experience and celebrate Kootenay agriculture,” said Hannant. “Many of today’s young and aspiring farmers don’t come from farming backgrounds.” The work bee starts at 3 p.m. July 12 at the 16521 Crawford Creek Road, with a potluck to follow at 7 p.m. For more on Young Agrarians, visit youngagrarians.org/ tag/kootenays.

Does speed really kill?
As I was making the drive to and will bring the speed limit in line from Calgary on the weekend I had with actual travel speeds,” he told time to think about an unexpected the Vancouver Sun last week. provincial government announceAnd actual travel speeds should ment here in B.C. last week. determine speed limits. In Europe, Highway speed limits are being increased on various highway sections around the province to as high as 120 kilometres an hour. When the news came out last week my first reaction was, “What, the death rate has dropped too low? Not enough people are dying on Lorne Eckersley our highways anymore?” An increase seems like it is in sharp contrast to the 1970s, higher legal speed limits have when across North America speed been the norm for many years, and limits were actually decreased, a much greater emphasis was ostensibly to lower the rate of fuel placed on engineering vehicles to consumption. handle those speeds. limit, then automatically slow down on a curve. This is particularly noticeable in high volume areas like Deerfoot Trail in Calgary. Nowhere on that road is it actually necessary to slow on curves in good road and weather conditions, but the traffic flow slows and congests on most curves. I have no explanation for this. Quite dangerous, in my opinion, are not the speeders, but the dawdlers, like the motorhome I encountered driving west between Sparwood and Fernie on Sunday. The driver was unwilling or unable to get his house on wheels much above 80 km/h, 20 kilometres below the posted limit. Not surprisingly, a large parade formed behind him because passing was pretty much impossible with the steady flow of oncoming traffic consisting primarily of Albertans headed back home after a weekend away. But my most dangerous driver vote is a tie between the one who stays on the inside lane on four-lane highways and passing zones, and the one who speeds up on straight stretches and passing lanes. In the former, vehicles are forced to pass on the right, which is not a safe practice. We are safest when all passing is done on the left. In the latter, frustrated drivers have to go excessively fast if they want to clear the bonehead who dawdles between straight sections. As I explored the list of highway speed increases for B.C., most of them made sense to me. Legislating all drivers to keep right except when passing, and enforcing the law would be a good next step. Do not misuse sexuality
Sexuality is as much a part of Zen practice as any other aspect of daily life. Acknowledging and honouring our sexuality creates an environment where conscious, mindful and compassionate relationships can be cultivated. The core of this precept is about avoiding attachment to sensuality. Working with the Zen precepts is fundamentally a way of working with our minds. They are not moral imperatives that we are commanded to follow. This precept doesn’t moralize about sex. Rather it asks us to look at self-centered desire and notice how it shuts us off from others. By looking at selfcentered desire, we see how breaking this precept works in concert with the other precepts. For example, sexual misconduct is often facilitated by lying to others, and self-centeredness leads to treating people like objects. Another way we misuse sexuality is by indulging in intoxicating fantasies about sex. Most of us do this, sometimes, but I’m referring to fantasies that are indulged in to the point that they replace connection with real life. I am not saying it is wrong to have sexual fantasies, but I am saying that is it important to recognize
such fantasies as delusions. If we practice with delusions they could become a path to realization. To practice with delusions, first notice the impermanence of these
A

states. They come and go. They are not “us” but something that arises and passes through us. We can become aware of how a particular state affects us, how we respond to it, what preceded it, and how one state leads into another. The point of the precepts isn’t to keep us from having fun, but to help us be aware of how we separate ourselves from people by turning them into objects. So what are we to make of all this? Given the wide range of interpretations, what does it mean to not misuse sexuality? What does it mean to avoid the extremes of excess and repression?
We can begin with the root admonition: Do no harm. Certainly there is much harm with the misuse of sexuality. Our Criminal Code attests to that and much suffering has resulted from misused sexuality. Not misusing sexuality is a particularly tricky precept since it happens in relationships. Even if we are clear about what is too much, too little or just right, in order to avoid doing harm, we need to work sex out with another person. Each of us is different. We have different gender preferences, pleasure preferences and timing preferences. We can’t assume that what is “right” for us will be right for another. In fact, we can assume that won’t be the case. The point is not to judge and condemn. It is to find out what’s true for you and to express that in a way that honors the fire inside without harming anyone else. Suggested Practice: For the next two weeks, before engaging in sexual activity ask yourself if you are about to misuse sexuality. Are you doing harm to others? Kuya Minogue is the resident teacher at Creston’s ZenWords Zen Centre. For more information, she can be reached at 250-428-6500.

SUMMER DOG SAFETY
Be a responsible pet owner. Don’t leave your best friend in the heat!
Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: • On a 25.5 ℃ day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 37.7 ℃ to 48.8 ℃ in just minutes. • On a 32.2℃ day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 71℃ in less than 10 minutes. • Animals can suffer brain damage or death from heatstroke in just 15 minutes.

Town survey a waste of tax money To the Editor: Regarding the June 19 article, “Survey says Creston residents are satisfied,” nothing about the type of survey that was sent out can truthfully be considered satisfactory. Quoting from a first-year university statistic book, “One of the most common dangerous sampling methods is a voluntary response sample. In a voluntary response sample, a large group of individuals is invited to respond, and all who do respond are counted. … Voluntary response samples are almost always biased, and so conclusions drawn from them are almost always wrong” (Deaux, Velleman, Bock, 2009, p. 318). This is exactly what occurred with this Creston survey — 1,000 surveys were sent out and there were 384 who volunteered to respond. This has nothing to do with Bhar Sihota’s comment on not being “statistically tested to determine significance” — Mr. Sihota was referring here to the 2009 survey in comparison to the 2013 survey, not to voluntary response bias. The reason for this bias is that when people volunteer to respond to a sentout survey, it is usually only those with strong feelings towards the issue
opiNioN LiNe
(whether for or against) that do respond. It is not even close to legitimate randomization. It is too bad that Mayor Ron Toyota would actually say that the survey is a valuable tool when creating budgets, policies and strategy. No, please do not use this as a tool — that is a waste of valuable taxpayers’ money. Actually, it was waste of taxpayers’ money to do this type of incorrect surveying. There is nothing valuable about this, not that it looks like efficient fiscal planning is high on the town’s budget, policies and strategic plans. For the record, when I went to the budget meeting this year, it was said that taxes have to increase and the town’s five-year budget plan has a deficit planned for every year. No business (or household) would survive with this type of financial planning. Rhonda Barter Creston
S&R crew owed credit for rescue To the Editor: Being on-site during the June 6 Leroy Palmer rescue episode, I waited with anticipation for the report given by our local media. Though I myself am a mere 14-year-old female, I feel to thank Robin Hood — sorry, Const.
Littlejohn, for his heroic rescue on Mount Thompson. Had his presence been absent, many lives could have been lost as the males of Bountiful nearly blundered this rescue. Thank God his years of training and mountaineering surfaced at this crucial moment of Bountiful history. May I humbly insert here a possible consideration that may not have been pondered by the public? The males of Bountiful, practically without exception, have hiked, explored and thoroughly investigated most of Mount Thompson. This is not bragging in the least, but simply stating that they are very aware of the hazards involved. Were risks taken? Yes. But simply realize that Leroy is a friend or brother to our community, and we were not ready to leave any person in his condition for many hours while trained personnel were flown in from hundreds of miles away. My father, who coincidentally was near the site, estimated at 4,600 metres, was commanded by cellphone from the base camp by RCMP to abandon the search. Back at base camp two hours later, he was able to guide by radio the search and rescue helicopter to Leroy’s exact location. Not seeking recognition, these facts may be interesting to some. If credit is due, it should be to the crew on the helicopter for their ability to hover with exactness in nearly vertical and adverse conditions, surrounded by trees, cliffs, drafts and darkness. Thank you, team! Your skills are astounding! Tillaina Blackmore Lister

Thunder Cats hire new head coach and GM CRESTON VALLEY THUNDER CATS
Submitted
New Creston Valley Thunder Cats head coach and general manager Jeff Dubois.
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats are pleased to announce the hiring of Burnaby’s Jeff Dubois as the team’s new head coach and general manager. He joins the Thunder Cats from Selkirk College of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL), where his teams won back-to-back league championships following his appointment as head coach in April 2012. Dubois replaces outgoing Thunder Cats coach Josh Hepditch, who was hired by the Junior A Maritime Hockey League’s Amherst Ramblers as coach and general manager, after leading Creston to a 39-11-1-1 record and an Eddie Mountain Division title last season. Hepditch was named the KIJHL’s coach of the year for 2013-14. “We are sad to see coach Hepditch leave,” said Thunder Cats president Scott Veitch.
“Josh did an awesome job for us. We wish him the best of success in his career. And we will certainly miss his commitment, professionalism, expertise and demeanour.” Under Dubois, Selkirk College compiled regular season records of 21-3-0 and 20-31 in 2012-13 and 2013-14, respectively, representing the only two times in the eightyear history of the BCIHL that a team has hit the 20-win mark. Both seasons concluded with unbeaten playoff runs, leaving Dubois with an overall record of 49-6-1 and a pair of BCIHL coach of the year awards. The Saints closed out the 2013-14 season riding a 29-game home winning streak that dated to Jan. 18. “I’m very excited to join the Thunder Cats organization,” said Dubois. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of transitioning to junior hockey and having an opportunity to build on the great success that the team accomplished last season. Josh and his staff have set a

high standard for team performance and the organization has all the tools to be a contender on an annual basis. I’ve been fortunate to be a part of a number of championship teams at the college level and I’m ready to work hard in order to produce similar results in Creston.” Prior to joining the Saints, Dubois spent six seasons in various coaching and management roles at Simon Fraser University (SFU), capturing BCIHL titles in 2008, 2010 and 2011, while advancing to the league championships in five consecutive seasons (2008-2012). He also spent two seasons as a player with the Clan while a student at SFU. His first head coaching assignment came at Selkirk, where he took over a program on the heels of a five-win, last place campaign in 2011-12. The Saints set a new BCIHL record with a 13-game winning streak to begin the 2012-13 season and capped the year with their first-ever BCIHL title. He also spent three years as the British Columbia Hockey League’s director of communications and will work closely with the Thunder Cats in the areas of marketing and sponsorship. “I want to thank our coach selection committee,” added Veitch. “We had some very qualified and experienced applicants from across the country seeking out this opportunity. They had a tough mandate in making the pick. In the end, Dubois was the best fit and right man for the job.” On the ice, Dubois said that Thunder Cats fans should expect a team built around hard work and speed. “As a group, we’ll be well-prepared and excited to compete on a nightly basis,” Dubois explains. “We’ve got a very strong group of players eligible to return and our expectations are high for another successful year.” “Through the coaching and management prowess, we look forward to coach Dubois to continue in the winning stride that was set last year,” said Veitch. “We are looking for great things happening and an awesome 2014-15 season for our hometown team.” Dubois will begin work immediately in preparation for the upcoming KIJHL season. Dates for the team’s training camp in August, as well as the 2014-15 exhibition and regular season schedules, will be announced in coming weeks.

Actually I think I can see Mr. Coe’s chest hair and it’s getting weird. VB: Reede, I don’t think he’s even here! RH: OK! We’re good to go! For those of you who don’t know us (which I find very hard to believe), I’m Reede Hawton and this is my friend, Victoria Bowns. VB: Good evening On family members, peers, teachers and everyone who made the effort to be here tonight. We really appreciate it RH: Victoria and I are extremely fired up to be talking to you all know how the PCSS grads of 2014 came to be VB: The best thing about being high school historians is there’s absolutely no chance of someone getting up here and making fun of how we came to be. RH: Definitely dodged a bullet on that one. VB: You know Reede, we really have been through a lot. RH: Oh really? I find that hard to believe considering most of us are only 18 years old. VB: No, I’m serious! Some very notable and stressful things have happened in our lifetime. I did some
research and it turns out we’ve survived 31 predicted apocalypses! We also survived the swine flu epidemic, and we witnessed the slow but steady decline of Miley Cyrus — she needs to stop. RH: Thirty-one, eh? That isn’t at all a small number! Not only did our generation survive these mishaps, we thrived! We watched our extremely influential neighbors south of the border elect their first African-American president, we saw Canada win its first Olympic gold medal on home soil and we heard Rob Ford apologize for smoking crack at least 312 times. VB: Yes, and speaking in actual historical relevance, we witnessed some downright inspirational victories, like Harry defeating Voldemort, Frodo singlehandedly saving Middle Earth, and Ash almost catching ’em all. RH: So close... I think we did a pretty decent job telling everyone about the past 18 years in history, so let’s scale that down to the last five years of our high school history. VB: Good call, Reede. I think this might be the fun part.
Prince Charles Secondary School graduating class of 2014 historians Victoria Bowns (left) and Reede Hawton.
RH: I think so too! Maybe we should tell them the things we’ll miss about high school and the things we wont miss at all. Why don’t you start us off, Vic? VB: Might as well start with the things we won’t miss starting from the beginning: Grade 8. I’ll never forget watching the deepening of voices, the unpredictable growth of hair and pimples, and of course the growth spurts

leading to clumsy and gangly 13-year-olds wandering the halls. Good thing we made it out of that one, eh, Reede? RH: Yeah... Along with the awkwardness of puberty comes the awkwardness of trying to “find oneself” — anyone remember Victoria’s skunk stripe phase? VB: Hey, I thought we weren’t supposed to get beaked up here. Other than that, one thing I for
surely won’t miss is being one of the only Asians in our school. The perks that came along with my exotic features are 1) constantly being mistaken for Denelle (I’m looking at you Mr. Simpson) and 2) being called Chinese food names — I’m not even Chinese! RH: Weird I never had that problem. However, one problem I did have along with all of my fellow classmates was the actual academic aspect of school. I’d always get all worried after I handed my test in and go around the room asking everyone how they did. My least favorite part would be getting to Alana and hearing her say she felt fine, even great — VB: — and knowing that she did fine and she did great. RH: Another school-wide issue would be the requirement to ask to go to the bathroom. Yes, us young adults all gathered here today would have had to ask to urinate a few short hours ago. Now, I really do hate to single anyone out, but Mrs. Christenson implemented a hall pass system, which was simply the worst. See HISTORY, page 12

An eight-by-ten print of Garden Party will be in the silent auction at this year’s Pink Garden Tea.
Tea raising funds for CVH cancer, maternity patients EAST KOOTENAY FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH
When you mention gardening to Creston resident Debbie Graham, you won’t forget that memorable smile she gives. For the past several years, Graham has made it her personal commitment to make a special day in her home garden that becomes a fundraiser to support several women initiatives in the valley. What was originally planned as a way to support breast can-
cer patients grew into an important fundraiser a couple of years ago for the East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s digital stereotactic mammography campaign. This year, on July 19, the day will see proceeds from the annual tea going to support cancer patients and the maternity department at the Creston Valley Hospital. A beautiful painting, Garden Party, by Laura Leeder will be part of the Pink Garden Tea silent auction. “Deb is a gracious host and her genuine desire to help women is admirable,” said
Donna Grainger, East Kootenay Foundation for Health executive director. The Pink Garden Tea couldn’t find a more beautiful surrounding as Graham’s home is turned into an oasis for tea lovers. Adding to the aromas of the varied tea varietals are scrumptious food offerings handmade with love by Graham and her committee. This year’s theme is “Friendship, Roses and Royal Teas”. Tickets for the tea are $14, available at Morris Flowers or by calling Graham at 250-428-7182.

From page 11 VB: I’m not going to miss the FBI level of security upheld in our library. Honestly, who’s going to steal a library book? Reede… RH: I won’t miss watching Ms. Shreeves make deliveries from the foods room to all of the teachers and exactly zero students VB: As if math wasn’t hard enough, Mrs. Maki’s Britney Spears headset did not help. RH: I won’t miss getting lapped on the milk run by Ms. Thorne. VB: And last but not least: Both: The cup rule! VB: I’ve never hated one disciplinary action more in my life. For those of you who don’t know it means, you can’t walk around with one of these (holds up to-go cup) but you can walk around with one of these (holds up shaker bottle). RH: Which is good for all the swoldiers in our grade: Bretty, Keiran, Big Jake, #gains! VB: OK, Reede, that’s probably enough chirping for tonight. RH: You’re probably right, Victo. Let’s lighten the mood a bit here. What will you miss about PCSS? VB: I’ll miss all the awkward Grade 8 couples. I think it would be nice if we took a brief moment of silence for the ones that didn’t make it. (A few seconds) OK, that’s probably good enough. RH: I’d be lying if I said I’m not still a huge fan of Kail and Sam. They should’ve been forever. VB: I’ll miss going to school in the morning to hear all the juicy gossip, such as Niel got hit by another car and it wasn’t by Oliver in his majestic PT cruiser. RH: Or when Sun-R got a new drive thru… VB: Sun-R got a drive through? RH: Well, you see, the difference between forward and reverse aren’t always so clear, especially to a new driver. Our friend Karli made that pretty clear when as opposed to reversing out of her
parking spot she drove through it, right into the front window of Creston’s favorite Chinese food restaurant. Our condolences to the Livingstones, who had glass shards in their wonton soup. VB: One kid who does know the difference between forward and reverse is Austin Agabob — I swear the kid buys a new vehicle every week! RH: There’s actually a lot of vehicle guys in our grade, one of them being Dwight Betker, who likes driving so much he literally drives half a block to church lunch every week. VB: What about those AVID trips? We’ve never been on one but they sure did sound fun. RH: Isn’t that right, Deaner? VB: I’ll miss watching Greg Benty’s 110 per cent efforts in intramural anything. RH: I’ll miss watching the teachers shut down Greg Benty along with every other student in intramural anything. Actually I’ll miss all of the teachers and all of their quirks. VB: Gribbin’s beard… Gribbin’s beard… RH: Ms. Margaret Miller’s accent. Was that bad? VB: (monotone) Mr. Coe’s bonus marks. RH: Ms. Seldon’s endless Valley Girl comments. VB: Seriously? RH: Stop being a Valley Girl… VB: Mama Lank’s frogs. RH: Mr. Banman’s gigantic forehead. VB: Mrs. Douma’s lovely purses. RH: Mr. Hawton’s mullet. VB: And that’s just naming a few! If we didn’t pick on you, know that it’s only because we have nothing to make fun of you for. RH: More than anything, Victoria and I want to express how grateful we are having met all of you and having made memories we will forever cherish. It’s an absolute treat seeing all of your faces five days a week, and above all else we’ll miss that the most! VB: You’ve been a great audience and an exceptional grad class Both: 2014, it’s been a slice!

Carol Elizabeth (Beth) Kastelan September 12, 1938 ~ June 29, 2014 Carol Elizabeth (Beth) Kastelan passed away surrounded by her family on Sunday June 29, 2014 at the age of 75 years. Beth was born in Hillcrest, Alberta on September 12, 1938. Her early years were spent in Hillcrest before moving with her mother to join her father who was working in Crawford Bay in 1945. Beth received her education in Crawford Bay and Creston, graduating from Prince Charles Secondary School. She married Anthony (Tony) Kastelan on May 20, 1957. Together they ran their farm and orchard and raised their family. Their Àrst child Carl was born in 1959, followed by Jeanette in 1960 and Sarah in 1963. Family life was busy with the farm and trips to Crawford Bay to visit Grandma and Grandpa Linn until Beth’s parents retired and moved to Erickson to live on the orchard as well. As her children grew older, Beth began a career with School District No. 8 in Creston. She was a familiar and friendly face at Prince Charles Secondary School until Ànally working in the School Board 2fÀce until her retirement. During her employment with the School District, Beth was an active union member, taking on various roles within C.U.P.E. over the years. Beth didn’t really retire though, as she then went on to work in the business established by her daughters. Wear Withall has been a Canyon Street À[ture since 1980. ,n her later years Beth single-handedly ran the business and loved both the people and challenges that came with it. She was a proud member of the Downtown Business Association and always made sure the Town of Creston knew her thoughts on various matters. Beth volunteered for various community organizations over the years, and most recently served as Chairperson for the Cresteramics Society for the Handicapped. Beth was an avid sewer, knitter and crafter. Her nightshirts and pajamas were featured at the Christmas Craft Fair every year. 2ne of her greatest joys in life was becoming a grandmother. She dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren and taught each of them to knit and sew. Her grandchildren loved spending time with her and at the family orchard. She was a strong, caring and passionate woman who always fought for the underdog and what she believed to be fair treatment and opportunities for everyone. She was pre-deceased by her parents Betsy and Carl Linn. She will be greatly missed by Tony, her husband of 57 years; her children, Carl (Dina) Kastelan, Jeanette (Mike) Stenhouse, and Sarah (Dan) Miller; her grandchildren Sam and Sophie Kastelan and Marybeth Stenhouse. As per Beth’s wishes there will be no memorial. If anyone wishes to make memorial contribution, please contact: S.N.A.P. at 250 428 2811 or Central Kootenay Spay Neuter Animal Program Society, 1134 Simmons Rd., West Creston BC, V0B 1G7.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE!
This spring, 10 students volunteered to participate in an eight-week course in mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) that was offered by Kuya Minogue at Creston’s Kootenay Mindfulness Centre. MBSR is an evidence-based stress prevention and treatment curriculum that combines mindfulness meditation, gentle stretching and mind/body awareness with the latest stress research. Of the 10 students, eight completed the course. Students (whose Kuya Minogue names are not included in this report) took the course for a variety of reasons. They had heard about MBSR and that it reduced stress and stressrelated illness. Participants were looking for relief from high blood pressure, body pain, an inability to cope with stressful situations, trouble sleeping, depression and anxiety. When asked why they stayed in the course, students said they were more serene, happier, more relaxed in their bodies and had more harmonious family relationships. Some reported that had learned to return to calmness when stress arose during a busy day. Individuals who already practiced meditation or stretching reported they had re-established daily practices. When asked what obstacles they encountered during the course, students reported initial nervousness about sharing their experiences in a group. Six students said that their fear of being judged diminished as the group trust built. Other obstacles were time management issues that made it challenging to do the homework. A major learning was how to recognize and overcome obstacles. Students reported significant changes in stress reaction. They recognized stress more quickly and were able to remember stress management tools that prevent stress escalation before distress settled into their bodies. Two people reported that they had stopped taking pain medication, three people noticed that their blood pressure went down enough for them to stop taking blood pressure medication and two people reported that they no longer needed pain medication because they had learned a holistic approach to pain management. Students also reported less time spent in daydreams, an improved ability to focus on a task, a stronger connection with the world around them, more space to notice stress reactions, and better impulse control about what they said and how they said it in conflict situations. One student said the course had awakened her from a long sleep. Another reported a snowball effect — the more she did the homework, the better she felt.

Several students reported that they ate more slowly, recognized when they were no longer hungry and had more awareness of what they were eating. Two women reported significant weight loss resulting from incorporating mindful eating practices into their meals. All but two research participants reported an improvement in their relationships. They became more appreciative of others, more aware of the circumstances of others, gentler and less judgmental. They said that their ability to see and accept others as they are increased. Several reported feeling calmer during flare-ups of conflict. Every student who completed the course expressed a commitment to continue with the MBSR
practices. Some committed to do stress reduction stretches daily, others to do mindful walking and/or sitting meditation. Several said that the course had helped them build the practices into daily routines. They said that they found the practices so beneficial that they would never stop doing them. The spring 2014 MBSR course was offered free of charge because it was an action research project and part of the MBSR teacher training program that Minogue is completing. The course brought so many benefits that Minogue is offering it again in the fall. For more information, contact Kuya Minogue at the Kootenay Mindfulness Centre at zenwords@ telus.net or 250-428-6500.

Brass quintet concert offering diverse range KOOTENAY BRASS QUINTET
Five of the Kootenays’ finest musicians are reuniting for a concert in Crawford Bay. The Kootenay Brass Quintet — featuring trumpeters Laurel Ralston and Tim Bullen, hornist Arnie Satanove, trombonist Keith Todd and tubist Robin Clegg — will perform a fun, energetic and diverse program of favourite classical, ragtime, jazz, show tunes and more on Friday. The group formed in 2013 after several years playing together in the Symphony of the Kootenays, but the five musicians have performed in a wide range of settings — funk, rock, folk and jazz bands, musical theatre, orchestral and chamber music. Bullen, Satanove and Clegg continue to be based in Nelson, while Todd and Ralston will be returning from their new homes, in Whitehorse and Ottawa, respectively. The quintet is excited to get together again one year after their first concert tour. “Our East Kootenay tour in 2013 was a huge success,” said Ralston. “We had a
ton of fun, and great audiences everywhere we played. It’s such a treat to make music with friends as talented as these!” The Kootenay Brass Quintet’s upcoming performance will showcase the group’s skill and artistry with great selections written especially for brass quintet — like renowned Canadian composer Howard Cable’s everpopular A Newfoundland Sketch and 17thcentury antiphonal pieces by Paul Peuerl — and excellent arrangements of hit Broadway tunes, folk songs, military band standards and even rock. “One of the best things about brass instruments is their versatility,” said Clegg, the quintet’s arranger. “They can be loud and flashy or soft and lyrical, sound regal and dignified or raucous and jazzy. Brass instruments have been used for centuries all over the world in art music and folk music. We want to give our audience a taste of what these instruments can do.” The Crawford Bay concert is at 7 p.m. July 11 at Harrison Memorial Church. Admission is by donation.
