A golden show JIM SINCLAIR Black Press
Stepping into the Miners’ Hall is always an invitation to think back to days gone by. But paying a visit to the gathering place (built just prior to the last century) for a live presentation set in those longgone times is beautifully appropriate. Gold Fever Follies is not new but it is as fresh as ever for the outof towners who enjoy it as part of their visit here, as well as for locals who can’t get too much of a good thing. In its 28th season the Follies relies on the energy and talent of a gifted cadre of writers and performers - both dramatic and musical. A small but mighty contingent filled the first few rows last
Thursday for the evening offering and the appreciation for the live show was evident on each face. A number of historically appealing topics, heavily gold-rushseasoned, are referenced in the script by Trail native Brian Turner. The effort is Turner’s seventh on a Follies theme and the versatile cast brings it off the pages very well. Two shows a day, five days a week through to August 23 guarantee this experience will not be forgotten by the group. “Off the Rails” is the title of this year’s installment which deals with labour-management issues, and more. All aboard for “Off the Rails,” appearing Tuesday through Saturday, 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the venerable Miners’ Hall.
How much gold? Golden riches forged the foundation of Rossland and the surrounding area. The Rossland Mines produced over 84 tonnes of gold in their 40 years of operation. This explains the origins of the Trail Smelter, the railway links with both Canada and the USA, and West Kootenay Power & Light Company. The financial investment necessary to promote and develop the hard rock mining operations was international in its sources as was the background of the thousands of miners who dug out more than 80 miles of tunnels to retrieve the gold. How much gold is 84 tonnes? Such an amount would form a solid cube approximately 6 feet to a side. Imagine a heavy-duty pick-up truck with a load of 1.66 tonnes of gold - you would need 51 of these truckloads to carry all the gold produced in the Rossland Mines. At today’s prices, the value of this gold would be 3.3 billion dollars. Gold has always been highly valued throughout history but in the 1890s, known gold sources were limited. One can see why the gold discoveries in Rossland hit the international press and caused a flur-

ry of trading on the London and New York Stock Exchanges. The crown jewel in the Rossland mines was the LeRoi - touted as being ‘the richest mine in the world’. Historically, the average price of gold per troy ounce remained remarkably stable for long periods of time. Sir Isaac Newton, master of the U. K. Mint, set the gold price in 1717 and it remained effectively the same for two hundred years. During the days of gold mining in Rossland the price was never more than $20.69 per troy ounce. Since 1968, the market price for gold has been free to fluctuate and in the past 10 years the price has increased dramatically. One troy ounce of gold in the form of a coin from the Canadian Mint is being raffled by the Rossland Museum with the draw to be held on September 6 during the annual Golden City Days celebration. Tickets are $10 each and only 400 tickets are available to purchase at the Museum and Alpine Drug Mart in Rossland and from members of the Museum and Golden City Days Committee. Stake your claim to the prizes and reconnect with Rossland’s golden history.

A new flag rises Danielle clarke Rossland News
The annual flag raising tradition took place on Canada Day again this year. Hikers of all ages gathered at Mount Roberts before the trek up to raise the flag. “I’ve been the flag carrier for 3 years in a row and last year I climbed up the flag pole on top of Roberts,” said Mackenzie Gibson a local youth who explained he wasn’t able to make the hike this year due to an operation. Members of the Gibson family did however participate in the Canada Day festivities. Charlotte Gibson said that her favourite part “was seeing all the views at the top and when they raised the flag.” The turnout for this year’s event brought together about 100 participants.

Too many deaths
It’s getting to be a familiar headline — another body found. This year there seems to have been a higher than normal number of missing persons reports, many ending tragically. The most recent fatality involves the discovery of a man’s body in the water by Cottonwood Park in Nelson. The body was identified as Lance Garry Sparks, 52, and police believe that foul play was not a factor. But the discovery brings the total of random deaths in this area to at least five in the past three months, not including vehicle accidents or the tragic canoe incident on Slocan Lake. In April, Nelson’s Jade Michelle Giesen went missing, only to be discovered dead a short time later. The same scenario took place later that month when Slocan Park resident Elena Popoff disappeared. Her remains were discovered in the Columbia River near the Trail Airport. In June, Michael Mucha left his North Shore home, never to be seen alive again. His body was also located a short time later. In June, Rossland’s Thomas Feeney was found dead in his home, the victim of a violent homicide. To date the case remains unsolved. In many of these incidents, foul play was “not suspected” according to police news releases. Still, that has not stopped social media from buzzing with activity. One writer has even gone so far as to suggest a serial killer may be on the prowl in the Kootenays. The notion is, for the most part, far-fetched. The Rossland case is believed to be an isolated incident and foul play was ruled out in he other deaths. But if foul play has been eliminated, then the only remaining explanations are natural causes, accidental death or suicide. We may never know how these people died, or why, but if any of them were the result of suicide, then it’s not a police problem, but a mental health issue. Let’s just hope more funds become available for needed health services. Lives may depend on it.

New forest fire air tankers in service By Tom Fletcher Black Press
B.C.’s new amphibious water-scooping aircraft have been sent to a forest fire near Hay River in the Northwest Territories. Four Air Tractor “Fire Boss” planes and one Cessna Grand Caravan command aircraft went into service this spring. They are based in Revelstoke, but can be moved to other locations in B.C. as conditions dictate. Their first mission of the 2014 forest fire season was supporting ground crews at a fire near Kaslo on

June 9. The planes delivered 222,361 litres of water and foam in 75 minutes. The Fire Boss group replaces two
Martin Mars water bombers that were contracted by the B.C. Forest Service from the Coulson Group of Companies,
based at Sproat Lake on Vancouver Island. Forests Minister Steve Thomson said the smaller aircraft can be deployed more
quickly, operate from more than 1,700 bodies of water in B.C. and can be split up as needed to assist with multiple fires.

Take a look at any community of any size and you’ll find some concerns that are struggling. Businesses, nonprofits… social agencies… all rely on patronage in order to remain vital and relevant. With some, like the Rossland Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, adaptation is proving to be a valuable part of evolution. While Legion membership may be in decline elsewhere, Branch President Doug Halliday is presiding over a bit of a resurgence in Rossland.
“Mostly it’s thanks to the community,” revealed Halliday on July 5. “We won an award last year, we’d increased our membership by 10 per cent. We got a nice certificate from Dominion Command (in Ottawa) for that.” In his current position for the past seven years, the easy-going Halliday seems wellsuited to the task, and puts in about 20 hours a week at it. Asked what it is that makes him successful in his role, he laughed, “…probably the fact that I don’t know how to say ‘no.’” All joking aside, Halliday had gained
a lot of familiarity with the Legion environment during his 22 years of active military duty. Doug served as a mechanic in such locations as Egypt, the Golan Heights, Cyprus, Germany and Jamaica as well as numerous postings across Canada. His military connection remained strong following his retirement from active service in 1980, and the Alberta native moved ahead on a different, yet related path. “I got a civil service job doing contract management for the Department of National Defence,” Hal-
liday explained, “... administering contracts… quality assurance for military equipment.” Under Halliday’s watch the branch (established in 1945) appears to be on the upswing, indeed. After meeting with the personable executive and seeing the bright and comfortable premises of Br. #14 at 2081 Washington Street, a rising profile is understandable. The Branch is closed through the months of July and August but was open that day for the funeral of a long-time member. Halliday and his
circle do their best to keep the attractions happening, and a few years ago the Branch was the recipient of a multi-thousand dollar facelift to it’s exterior. The social action will resume in earnest when September arrives, making way for winter – as with the rest of Rossland – the busiest of seasons. There’s really not much that compares to the Legion atmosphere in Rossland or anywhere else, for that matter. If you’d like to look into a membership… please give Joanne Drystek a call at 250362-2150.

Sterling is a lovely looking one year old female rat who is looking for her forever home. She has an alluring silver coat. She was surrendered to the Trail Regional BCSPCA on May 27, 2014 with her siblings. Rats are very neat animals, that are smarter then what most people think. They are capable of using a litter box, learning their names, and even tricks! They do bond with their guardians once handled frequently, and are a great alternative to folks that want a smart pet in a small apartment. Please come to the Trail Regional BCSPA and meet Sterling! Local mountain sweet ride GRAVITY’S PRO TEAM TOOK OVER TOWN JOSEFIN SVEDBERG Rossland News
Local downhill rider Mike Hopkins and the other three pro riders in Gravity’s team recently went for a team building road trip in the Kootenays. Pink Bike added a videographer to document the trip. It was the first trip the international team did together as a team and Hopkins gladly showed his hometown to the other riders. Since all the riders have a different focus and various styles
of riding the trip focused on trail riding. Trying out new bike components from Gravity and showcasing the variety and skill in their international pro team. Bruno Long, photographer from Revelstoke, joined the team to collect editorial material from the trip. He is describing Red as “really sweet” and laughs about calling Hopkins “the Major” for going around and talking to everyone in Rossland. During the trip they visited Rossland
and Red, team rider Garett Buehler’s home in Nelson and Long’s home in Revelstoke. All the towns adding new elements to the trip with different kinds of playgrounds, which was perfect since everyone on the team comes from different mountain bike backgrounds. Gravity wanted to show they all could perform on the same product. Long shares that in Rossland they spent most of their time on Red and hit a few parts of the Seven Summit trail and

some places in town. He liked the “newer style flow turns” on Red and added,“it is great for trail bikers.” Buehler has made his own jump line in his backyard in Nelson and the team was pumped to hit the massive jumps on their trail bikes. In Revelstoke they went mostly downhill and hit another jump line, a little bit more suitable for trail bikes. Hopkins was stoked to get to ride Revelstoke since it is a place he had never ridden before even
though it is so close to home and describes it as “really rad”. He says that the trip was definitely focused on biking but he had some time to show the other riders some local sweet spots like the rope swing in Nancy Green and Black Jack. “It was fun to show a bunch of international people a decent mountain town”. Having a really fun time in Rossland, Long says the town is “super sweet” and that the Red Mountain Resort staff were “super nice”.

TARA HOWSE Rossland News
Last Tuesday marked Canada’s 147th birthday and the annual Rossland Canada Day celebrations. Activities included the Mt. Roberts hike followed by cake and music at Pioneer Park. Since 1997, the tradition of hiking up the 1995m peak on July 1 each year to raise the Canadian flag has brought out Rosslanders of all ages. With approximately 60 people setting out on the morning of July 1, this year was no different. The community flag was hoisted atop Mt. Roberts
thanks to the hard work of a few individuals. Adam McNeil, who removed the old flag, Cath Ruven, who hemmed the new flag, and Laundry Dog Services who made it bright and clean for the big day. A slice of Sweet Dreams Bakery Canadiana cake was enjoyed by many while Pioneer Park was transformed into an outdoor concert thanks to the Rossland Legion’s PA system. The Gold Fever Follies sang “Oh Canada” and entertained everyone with a sample from this year’s show followed up with some toe-tappin’, dance

J’avais envie de me joindre à eux!

Please accept this invitation to participate in the 2014 Golden City Days Parade on Saturday, September 6. You may enter a float, a vehicle, a marching or walking group, play music, dance, entertain, and display your skills or products - whatever you do best. Bikes, baby buggies, and boards are welcome. Families, classmates, or work groups are encouraged to join in the fun. Golden City Days is the family celebration of Rossland’s heritage as an 1890s gold mining town. You are invited to dress in 1890s1920s style, so dig out old hats, vests, long skirts, miners’ beards, and gamblin’ duds. We ask entries to make lots of noise to add to the festive spirit of the parade. Bring your CDs or iPod to
play on the vehicle stereo, sing songs, or make music. There are no entry fees, and each participant will receive a parade ribbon. As well, there will be special Golden City Days tattoos for younger entrants. After the parade, light refreshments (one mini sub, drink, and cake slice per person attending) and cake will be served to registered entrants only in Pioneer Park downtown. In order to receive tickets to the reception you must note on the parade entry form the number of persons on your float who will attend the reception. To enter, and for more information, please email director@rossland.bclibrary. ca or call 250.362.7611. En- Last year’s outhouse race on Second Rossland News achived photo try deadline is August 29.
