Grand Forks International 2014 Burnaby takes GFI title with ninth inning rally CRAIG LINDSAY Black Press
After five days of hard-fought baseball between 12 strong teams at the Grand Forks International (GFI) baseball tournament it all came down to the final inning in the final game between the Burnaby Bulldogs and the Everett Merchants on June 30. Down 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Tyler Yorko went up to the plate for the Bulldogs. Yorko had two strikes against him with one out and two men on base (Colby Rossi and James Zamko), when he made contact with the ball and sent it deep into centre field. The double brought in Rossi for the tying run and Zamko for the winning run. After Zamko crossed the plate, the entire Burnaby bench ran out onto the field and mobbed him. Yorko, a 20 yearold second baseman from Burnaby, had not played at all in the final game but stayed ready by practicing
his swings in the bull pen. Zorko had only had five at bats and one hit throughout the whole GFI tournament. “I was a little nervous but I felt prepared,” he said. “The first pitch (Jake Levine) he painted on the outside so I couldn’t really reach it. He then had me down with a fastball inside that got by me. I knew I had to elevate a hit to score a run. A few pitches later I got a pitch and I drove it into a gap.” Yorko said the team was especially excited about winning the GFI knowing that only a couple of Canadian teams had won it before in over 30 years. ‘Our coaches were pretty thrilled, they had been there for many years before,” he said. “Most of us didn’t even know.” Yorko said the whole tournament was great with tough competition. “I’d heard Grand Forks was a small town but I said let’s ‘see what the baseball is like,’” he said. “The competition was great. It was a well held tourna-

ment. There were tons of people there and people partying in left field. It was a really good atmosphere.” Burnaby picked up $20,000 for their efforts, while second place Everett grabbed $12,000. The Seattle Studs and Thurston County Senators received $5,000 each for finishing in the top four. In the semi-finals, Burnaby moved on by beating Thurston Country 3-1, while Everett got there by
sneaking past Seattle 4-2. The money round scores (quarter-finals) were: Thurston County 3, Parkland White Sox 1; Seattle 2, North West Honkers 0; Everett 6, Langley Sr. Blaze 3; and Burnaby 13, Lacey Saints 1. It took a small army to organize and run the GFI. Coordinator Joan Thomas led over 300 volunteers that worked tirelessly the past several months to get James Donaldson Park ready and

to work the event, which took place from June 25-30. Thomas said the event went smoothly although wet weekend weather did bring down the attendance numbers. The weather did clear up for the last day (Monday, June 30) and that brought out some bigger crowds for the last games. The honourary host and closest team the Trail Orioles won one of three games in the round-robin but

Trail beat the West Coast Guns 17-6 in their opening game Wednesday but then were out-gunned by Seattle 14-9 and Everett 10-2 later in the week. There was also an exhibition game played the first day between two youth teams: the Castlegar Warriors and the Grand Forks Babe Ruth team. Castlegar won the game 2-1 in a close battle. “That game was
amazing,” said Thomas. “What a beautiful evening. The park was full. The kids played under the lights. It was a great game.” All the money from the gate for the youth game was donated to the local ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) society. Thomas said the GFI also raised money from 50/50 draws and other contests for the society. The complete total raised was not known at press time.

Bring back the showcase of talent
Volunteers needed to revive 80-year Kootenay tradition Sheri Regnier Black Press
A quartet of Greater Trail women passionate about showcasing local young talent is asking the community for help to bring the Kootenay Festival of the Arts back to life in the Silver City. The festival’s past co-chairs Beth Lloyd and Shirley Mendoza are working behindthe-scenes getting ready to pass the baton centre stage to new co-chairs Nicole Zimmer and Audrey Gereun for the April 2015 event. First, they need some volunteers to sign up and help run the show. “Our volunteers do not need to know anything about music or dance to be part of the festival,” said Lloyd, a Rosslandbased registered piano teacher. “That has nothing to do with being a volunteer,” she explained. “We just need help here and there with small jobs. “It can be for short or long periods, depending on the
amount of time the person can offer.” Save for a wartime break and a threeyear interlude in the 1960s, the festival has alternated between Trail and Nelson every year since its inception in 1930 at the Nelson Opera House. For the last decade, Lloyd and Mendoza have been orchestrating the local festival that invites young performers from the Kootenays, Okanagan, and United States to showcase their talent for piano, strings, voice and spoken word. Sadly, tradition broke last year when the Trail-based festival was cancelled by its board of directors due in large part, to a shortage of volunteers. “It’s not a huge time commitment and volunteers can be walked through it,” said Lloyd. “But we do need volunteers to make this festival viable.” Although Zimmer is new to organizing the festival, she has history with the twoweek event. music teacher has entered countless youthful talents into the competition, but said she and Gereun are ready to step up and carry the festival into the future. “There’s been this group of volunteers that have put on the festival for years and years,” said Zimmer. “I feel like it’s time for others to step up,” she continued. “We have such a large arts community and many supportive parents with kids who dance, and play piano or strings. “With a nice mix of new people and people with experience we can keep this festival going because it’s important and valuable to the community.” A special perk for volunteers is that they can hear and see firsthand all the exceptional talent on stage, added Zimmer. Past volunteers have been floored by the talent because it’s not something people generally see, noted Lloyd, adding that students don’t have many opportunities to perform locally at

Sign gives Fairview community status
Sixty-third in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Greg Nesteroff Black Press
There are two Fairviews in West Kootenay: the Nelson neighborhood, which we’ll deal with later in this series, and the subdivision on the west side of the highway between Genelle and Castlegar. The Regional Dis-
trict of Central Kootenay’s earliest plan of the latter is from 1966. Its streets include 201st Avenue plus Jesse, Hetman, Fairview, and Poupore roads. (Poupore will also be taken up later in this series.) Its status as a community unto itself is thanks largely to a “Fairview Unincor-
porated” sign. It’s not recognized in the BC Geographical Names database. FORSLUND This sternwheeler landing south of Needles on the west side of Lower Arrow Lake was named for Capt. Albert Forslund (1864-1938) who arrived from Sweden in 1890. For many
years he piloted the SS Rossland and Minto and also operated a large orchard and farm. FOSTHALL Fosthall is the name of a locality, bay, creek, point, and mountain on the west side of Upper Arrow Lake, northwest of Nakusp. Its earliest use was
in George Dawson’s Report on a Portion of the West Kootanie [sic] District, British Columbia, dated 1889: “At about 22 miles from the head of the lake, on the west side, Fosthall Creek comes in …” In March 1907, A.H. Green and F.P. Burden surveyed the Fosthall “valley lands”

Known for it’s iconic smelter smokestack, Japanese/Canadian culture and most recently it’s award-winning water, Greenwood, B.C. has much to celebrate since it was first declared a city in 1897 during the mining boom of the Boundary District. The townsite, named after Greenwood mining camp in Colorado, was laid out in 1895, incorporated as a city in 1897 and by 1899 the population reached 3000. The BC Copper Co opened a smelter in 1901 and employed up to 450 men in its mine and smelter. After WWI, however, a drastic fall in copper prices caused the closure of both operations, and Greenwood became little more than a ghost town. It was revived during WWII in 1942 in a traumatic turn of events when 1200 Japanese Canadians were forcefully interned in Greenwood. Some of them remained after the camp was closed in 1946 and about 10% of local residents are of Japanese origin. In 2012 Greenwood was voted “Best Municipal Water in the World” in the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition - and has placed in the top 3 since.

for the Canadian Dominion Development Co. of Winnipeg. It didn’t amount to much, although a few attempts were made to plant fruit trees. The name’s origin is a mystery. In Pioneer Days of Nakusp and Arrow Lakes, Kate Johnson claimed Fosthall “gets its name from a clerk in the employ of the Hudson’s Bay post there in the early days of white settlement. Foundation timbers of old buildings were seen around 1890 between the present house and the creek at the south need of the bay.” U n f o r t u n a t e l y, Johnson didn’t provide any sources, and in First Nations Ethnography & Ethnohistory in BC’s Lower Kootenay/Columbia Hydropower Region, Dorothy Kennedy and Randy Bouchard say they were unable
to find any reference to a post at that location or any employees named Fosthall in Hudson’s Bay Company’s records. (The late Bill Laux suggested there may have been a trading post there that didn’t belong to the company.) Fosthall, by that spelling at least, is a very rare surname. Kennedy and Bouchard noted that on an 1866 map, surveyor Walter Moberly gave the name of Fosthall Creek as naghtuous, while two years later, James Bissett, a chief trader with the Hudson’s Bay Company, recorded it in his diary as nauchteaux, “which clearly are attempts to transcribe the same indigenous name.” They believed it was an OkanaganColville term derived from n7axwt meaning “downstream; go downstream.”

The first Founders Day was an interdenominational church service, pot luck picnic, kids bike parade and bed race down South Government St. Les and Nora Williams reignited the interest in Founders Day in 1999 adding music, vendors and a larger parade. It has continued since and is currently organized through The Greenwood Board of Trade. This is the 16th year for Founders Day celebrating the Greenwood’s 117th anniversary of incorporation.

Icing on the Millennium cake JIM SINCLAIR Black Press
The fruits of Rotarians’ labours will be obvious at Millennium Park, most likely by next spring according to Ron Ross, president of the service club’s Sunrise 2000 group. The plans for improvements to Castlegar’s showplace have been in the works for some time, and originally consisted of a facility for storing soccer equipment. With all the other features for the park, like the ponds, bike park, and the completed outdoor gym, the club felt a concession would be appropriate to include. Morning and evening Rotarians are collaborating on this project and have made a couple of presentations to city council along the way, most recently in late June. Ron Ross also updated the Castlegar News in an early July phone conversation. “We’re still mucking around with the detailed design of this kitchen and concession area,” informed Ross, “shifting things around, and the building wall might move a foot or two one way or the other.” A lot of time and effort has gone into the preliminary design and it was hoped the detailed phase could begin early this week – the task being entrusted to WSA Engineering. The idea for the park amenity was born prior to the plan for the Millennium Ponds, and as Ross outlined, it was hoped the facility could be rented to the general public for events like weddings and other gather-

ings. City hall is in favour of including a concession in the final design. “We’ve tried to modify the design so we could look after both aspects,” Ross continued. “We’re working on that at the moment. In years to come the real estate along the Columbia River can be a social and recreational magnet… with the bike park and Millennium Ponds (impressive stories in their own rights) drawing visitors and the concession satisfying many of their refreshment cravings. “If we start construction in a month or so,” Ross concluded on July 3, “we’ll get it to lockup some time in the fall, then over winter we’ll finish up the inside. It wouldn’t open, probably, until some time next spring.” Park goers, in the meantime can see where the storage and concession will be situated… the area is marked by stakes and plastic ribbons near the parking area.

Touring the West Kootenay has always been popular with motorcyclists. And who can blame them for riding along the blue waters of Kootenay Lake enveloped by the Selkirk and Purcell Mountains. These winding route ways are about to get some more limelight thanks to Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism (NKLT) executive director Dianna Ducs and Robby Kerr, owner of Kootenay Motorcycle Rentals. The duo have helped create a video of motorcycling called “The West Koot Route.” It was filmed last month. NKLT hired Kootenay Valley Helicopters, videographer Jason Mannings
and still photographer Kari Medig to follow a group of 16 riders from Nelson to Kaslo in June. Ducs explained the West Koot Route has two different gateways, either from Nelson or Revelstoke and then around Kokanee Glacier. The route around the glacier is 220 kilometres. The Selkirk Loop is a 450 kilometre byway winding through the Selkirk Mountains through Idaho, Washington and BC. To get video footage Kerr organized 15 friends who rode all day departing Nelson at 7:30 a.m. “I’m a motorcycle fanatic,” said Kerr. “It was fun to get followed by a helicopter riding up the lake.”

Hit the highway for adventure continued from page A6
“We could feel the wind off the (helicopter) rotor and the camera crew was hanging out the side. They got some amazing shots, not just aerials.” Kerr has been building bikes with his Kootenay Motorcycle Art since 2007 but he said because it is a small community and it’s a seasonal business he decided to expand into rentals for touring; KMR opened in June. According to Kerr, the area is surrounded by some of the best motorcycling roads — thanks to the terrain and the winding, yet smooth roadways — and many tourists come to the Kootenays wanting to explore the region by motorcycle. Reaching Kaslo by breakfast the group hit the road for a detour north to Meadow
Creek. They backtracked to Kaslo and continued west to New Denver before returning to Nelson. NKLT will be using some of the footage for their video promoting festivals and events coming out next spring. “It takes a year to shoot the video as we’re getting footage at each event, “ said Duc. Ducs said the NKLT is promoting the Selkirk motorcycle touring to the U.S. international market as it’s a good market. “It’s very lucrative (for businesses) as motorcyclists are not carrying as much so they need accommodation and food.” The granddaddy circle tour of them all, the International Selkirk Loop. Named as one of the top 10 scenic drives in the Northern Rockies, the International Selkirk Loop is well worth the drive.
“KVH was awesome to work with and they were generous with their time,” said Ducs. “All the riders donated their entire day to help promote riding in the region. Kudos to them all. NKLT is honoured to have them support tourism.” The motorcycle touring coverage was spurred by a conversation Ducs had last winter when a journalist from The Globe and Mail was at Whitewater. He asked what was popular in the summer so they decided to come back for the motorcycle touring along with an offer to edit the video which came out on Thursday, July 10. Horoscope
for the
Week July 11, 2014
Tip of the Week: An eventful cycle has begun. Under the light of the Full Moon in Capricorn Mercury will be the first star in the show as it re-enters sentimental Cancer. Add to this Mercury in the last degrees of Gemini at the exact moment and you get a very socially stimulated and chatty energy pattern. If you have been out of the gossip loop, this will prove to be a good catch-up time. Add to this a lovely trine (120 degree angle) between Venus and Mars on Sunday July 13th and the social theme is uplifted by a healthy dose of romance power. Party time!
Michael O’Connor
On July 16 big brother Jupiter enters Leo. It will remain in the lion’s den for an entire year. We can expect plenty of excitement and drama to coincide with this ingress. The overall theme linked to the ingress chart speaks of a dynamic influence with plenty of creative flair. Emotions will be running high especially regarding the ongoing and all important revolution of male/female equality. Traditions and the social conditioning implied among various groups and peoples around the world remains the central block. But the revolutionary movement to challenge these outworn attitudes has taken on a global status. We can expect this revolution of evolution to become progressively louder over the coming months. Venus entering Cancer on Friday July 18 will add to the appeal for a genuine state of empathy required for one to lay claim to the fuller implications of the title ‘human being’. The key is to focus to raise one’s center to the heart. The emotionality of anchored beliefs represented by the solar plexus and the intellectuality of the throat chakra can produce a loop that misses the heart. When the heart is activated it produces a deep sense of unity and even communion with all life. This planetary line-up active now and which will linger for an entire year says, ‘think with your heart and feel with your mind’, literally.

Nurturing an array of new thoughts, ideas and concepts is keeping you busy now. Some of these will prove creatively inspiring. A new quality of harmony and flow in your most intimate connections is featured. The more able you are to stretch out of old ways of thinking and flex into new ones the more joy will you feel. Pay attention to this process. As though in the final stretch of a heated race, the pace is accelerating and you want to win. At best you feel excited and stimulated. Tune-in by allowing yourself to cover a lot of bases, to multi-task to your heart’s content. Short trips and quality time shared with family and friends are the counter balancing themes to determined efforts to get ahead. Desires to deepen an overall sense of security continue to play on your mind. It may be that you want to stimulate more income. Or perhaps you want to experience a boost in your overall state of health. Increased and deepened bonds with people you love are also quite likely. Why settle for less, focus and pray to realize all of the above. Expect to experience your confidence levels mounting this week. This represents a big opportunity to take a few risks to advance to the next level. Simply getting clear about what you truly want and need may do the trick. Yet, if you have been feeling stuck and stagnant this week’s energy patterns represent a golden opportunity to breakthrough. Like recharging your batteries while talking on your phone, now is a good time to balance an active social cycle with a resting one. You can achieve this by engaging in uplifting exchanges yet avoiding adventure or big assertions. You may be more in the mood for both next week but for now, lay low and get your tanks filled. Some exciting prospects are floating on your airwaves. You feel inspired to make some key, calculated moves to increase your scope and influence. Nurturing new streams of income is leading you to increase your network and exposure. Some big opportunities are present for you so focus and take action and do it now.

You are on a roll. This should be especially true socially and professionally. Enjoying cultural activities has and continues to be a central theme. You are happy to push through old and existing blocks. This is one of those break away opportunities. Your willingness to take a few strategic and calculated risks will be rewarded, soon. You have been drawn to see a bigger picture but to pay attention to the details as well. Some amount of research is implied. As well, you are open to connect with people who have the answers and resources you are after. Your overall mood remains somewhat sober and serious. Yet you are also interested in alternative approaches. Deep seated feelings and emotions are consuming your vision. These are linked to important changes and while endings are implied, so too are new beginnings. In fact, you may be getting some big returns. Meanwhile, your social calendar has been full and will continue into this week. But you will soon want a bit more privacy. Romance is featured. Significant encounters with family and friends have been keeping you busy. In fact, you have probably not been able to relax and enjoy. Circumstances are pushing you to contribute more and perform. Generally, you feel quite assertive these days. The time is right to both offer guidance and instruction and to receive it as well. Focus to achieve this balance. Balancing work with play is ever ideal and especially so now. The play side features socializing. The time is right to share quality time with someone you love. If you are single you could, with a little extra effort, meet someone special. Things will open up even wider this week. If you have been waiting for a break there is good reason to say you will get it very soon. An extra creative cycle continues. In fact, it will shift into the next higher gear this week. You may feel inspired to simply share it socially and/or with family. Yet, if you have had any creative projects waiting their turn, the inspiration to at least get started will be there. As ever, the key is to take the first step. Have faith in your creative prowess.

Lexus joins the compact crossover lineup with the all-new NX.
‘‘

OF THE WEEK!
Drive The worldwide launch of the NX was held right here in B.C., driving between ultra modern Vancouver and the rustic resort of Whistler. International guests were exposed to the two sides of the NX, the polished city vehicle and the weekend getaway SUV. Powering around the mountain resort, I got my first shot at the all-new 2.0L direct inject turbocharged 4-cylinder that Lexus will use in a number of its vehicles. With 235hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque this new power plant does a good job once the NX 200t is in motion; it is getting away from a stop that could use a bit more snap. AWD is standard across the lineup but the system is designed to run in front wheel drive as much as possible to help save fuel. Lexus has made no bones about its target; it sees the Audi Q5 as the benchmark in this class. Audi has been at the small turbocharged game a lot longer and it shows, plus the handling of the NX isn’t sharp at all. In fact, all the passengers inside the base model test vehicle noticed the top-heavy body roll. Verdict What Lexus (Toyota) has been up to over the past ten-plus years is

producing hybrid cars in numbers nobody else can touch. This new NX is also available as a hybrid, but don’t expect any kind of show-stopping performance. Rated at just 194hp, the heavier NX 300h hybrid might be outclassed by just-as-thrifty diesel options in the market. The price of the NX 200T has not been set but if you look at the Audi Q5 as a target, expect the price to start at roughly $41,000 when it goes on sale at the end of 2014. Fuel economy has also not been set but with a direct injection turbocharged 4-cylinder under the hood, this new Lexus should be better on fuel than the larger RX350 equipped with a V6 engine. As the small SUV market continues to grow, and this new NX certainly is one of the most eye-catching to come along in a while.
Safety Tip: There are some quick safety checks you can make on your vehicle to protect yourself and your passengers. For starters, make sure the head restraints are at least level with the top of the head and as close as possible to the back of the head to help prevent injury.

Cruze is cruising up the best seller charts By Keith Morgan
Our neighbours to the south may still be suspicious of smaller vehicles but they are more than welcome on driveways north of the border. In the top 20 best sellers, 15 are compact or subcompacts and the remaining five are by no means gas-guzzlers. The Honda Civic is the perennial top seller, and according to the latest figures
available, the Hyundai Elantra and the Toyota Corolla follow it. The Chevrolet Cruze, currently with a starting sticker price of a few bucks more than $15,200, sits in a solid fourth place and it’s a ray of light for General Motors. It recorded a five percent year-over-year sales increase in the first quarter reports. Its 2014 March sales were a fraction under 50 percent better than last year. In fact, it’s the brand’s
bestseller with worldwide sales in excess of two million since its launch. Much has been written about the Ford revival and its excellent world car products – most of which fall into the small car category. GM does have competing products in what’s become a crowded market. The subcompact Sonic is in the top 20 but nothing has caught fire in the way the Cruze has. It first surfaced here in late
2010 as a globally developed and designed compact four-door sedan and fivedoor hatchback, replacing the outgoing Cobalt. When I drove one of the early editions, I was impressed with its design and performance, which matched any rival. It’s a car for a small family starting out or singles with a daily commute on their hands. However, I feared the Cruze would suffer from the apparent prejudice against domestically produced

Perhaps most significant among them was the introduction of a clean diesel version (pictured here) with a sticker price of around $26,000. It’s not inexpensive but Canadians like the 4.2 L/100 km highway fuel consumption offered by the 2-litre, turbocharged diesel powerplant. The base Cruze LS is also easy on your gas budget.
‘‘
I feared the Cruze would suffer from the apparent prejudice against domestically produced small cars but its sales prove me to be a pessimist.
’’
2014 Chevrolet Cruze
Its standard 6-speed manual transmission, coupled with a 1.4-litre power-
plant, promises a highway fuel consumption rating of 5.4 L/100 km – the
auto tranny makes that 5.6 L/100 km. The Cruze Eco’s 1.4L turbocharged
ECOTEC engine, generates 138 horses and sips 4.6 L/100 km on the highway. It looks good today but in 2015, the Cruze gets a significant visual refresh with an updated grille and body shape that will give it more than a passing resemblance to its larger sibling Malibu. We’re told it will get significant tech changes, including an infotainment system with a driver alert text system that can be read through
smart phones and over Bluetooth, plus additional USB ports, and a 4G LTE connection enabling it to function as a WiFi hot spot. The Chevrolet AppShop will allow owners to download all available apps directly to the vehicle, offering access to vehicle data, music, news, weather and travel information. No prices yet. Worth a serious look by import car fans. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

BC high school students show off their skills on video By Bob McHugh
A hands-on ability, whatever the skill, is a talent that tends to go unrecognised and too often, it is underappreciated, even by those who possess the talent. That’s why I was delighted to be asked again to participate as a judge (one of five) in the annual “Show Us Your Skills” competition organized by Discover Skills BC for high school students. Students create a short
video about a trade or skill that they are interested in pursuing. Prizes for the top three videos are presented to both the student and the high school that they attend. The high level of expertise that some of these kids already possess was remarkable and the video entries this year were outstanding. First prize this year went to Connor Shaw, a student at Traditional Learning Academy in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island. He was taught to
weld by his uncle and at age twelve he fabricated a flat deck for a truck he was given. More recently he added a hydraulic lift system that gives the flat deck a dump feature. Connor loves welding and plans to pursue a career in a related trade. Connor will get an Apple MacBook Air and his high school will receive $2,000. The second prize winner was Albert Leung, who attends Steveston-London Secondary in Richmond. Albert will get an Apple iPad
Air 16GB and the school will receive $1,000. Bernice Chung, a student at Eric Hamber Secondary, in Vancouver, came third, she will receive an Apple iPad Mini, and $500 goes to the school. Trades can offer a rewarding and fulfilling career path with a higher than average wage level and a solid future. The trades sector in BC is expected to face an overall labour shortage by 2016 that will deepen in the following years, according to

A goal of this video competition is to encourage more BC students to simply consider a trade as a rewarding career alternative and entice more teachers and high schools to include trades as a career option in the classroom. In the auto service industry, the highly regarded Ford ASSET technician training program is a good example. Locally, apprentices spend
four months at BCIT and four months in a BC Ford dealership (mainly in the service sector, but also in other departments) on a rotational basis. They can also choose to specialize in a specific area, such as auto electronics, and get additional upgrade certification courses through Ford training. Most apprentice programs are four years and on-thejob training is on-going,

Smaller cars used to be basic, boring and unbearable. The 2014 Kia Rio has changed all that. It works for running errands and summer road trips. This is no ugly econo-box. The Rio’s look is dramatic and modern. And importantly, the Rio is stingy on fuel and is now available for the stingiest of prices -- with $2,500 off select models until July 31.

Driving safely around trucks Vehicles have to share roadways equally, but some vehicles tend to take up more space and make motorists more nervous than others. Anyone who has traversed a freeway has ridden alongside trucks. More than 70 percent of accidents involving trucks are the fault of the other vehicle, according to a study from the U-M Transportation Research Institute that analyzed national crash data on fatal two-vehicle accidents involving a heavy truck. Accidents involving large trucks frequently result in injuries. Ensuring everyone’s safety means knowing some of the rules of the road when trucks are present. Blind spots Experienced drivers know the advantages of defensive driving techniques, especially when riding alongside tractor-trailers. Despite their larger side view mirrors, large trucks have much larger blind spots than standard cars, and knowing about blind spots is a great way to avoid accidents involving tractor-trailers. Avoid driving on the right side of the truck in the front or rear of the vehicle. The middle-left side of the truck is another spot to avoid, as trucks merging into lanes may not be able to see you when you are on the left flank of the truck. Similarly, trucks are typically required to drive in the right lane of highways and will be changing lanes frequently to
get back into the right lane. Because passing on the right is not allowed, driving in blind spots in the right lane can be dangerous for standard-size cars. Merging As mentioned, the middle of an 18-wheeler is a large blind spot, as is directly behind the truck. When trucks are merging into the roadway, give them plenty of space. You can flash your high beams to alert the truck that you are slowing down and allowing the driver to cross in front of your car. Otherwise, move over into an open lane to give him a wide berth. Leave plenty of room Give tractor-trailers plenty of room when sharing the roadways. Tire blowouts on such trucks are quite common, as carrying heavy loads can put a lot of stress on tires. Blowouts send shards of heavy rubber into the air and roadway and can cause the trucker to swerve. The more space you leave between your vehicle and the truck, the less likely you are to be involved in a blowout-related accident. Another thing to keep in mind is that trucks have a large amount of surface area that can be blown around by the wind. Trucks can be difficult to control in the wind. Therefore, leave extra room on windy days; otherwise, you could find a truck drifting into your lane. Wide turns Trucks need to make wide turns to clear curbs
and roadside items. Therefore, truck drivers need to swing left before making right turns. Very often the driver will not be able to see cars next to his trailer. The right side of a truck can be extremely dangerous and has far more blind spots than the driver’s side of the vehicle. Don’t stop suddenly A truck traveling behind you cannot stop and maneuver as quickly as a passenger vehicle. Try not to hit the brakes to avoid an obstacle in the road, or you may have a semi barreling into the rear of your vehicle. According to information from the site Drive Safely, trucks fully loaded may take as much as the length of three football fields to come to a complete stop when driving at 60 miles per hour. Pass quickly When passing a large truck, do so only on the left and do it as quickly as possible. This way you move out of the truck’s blind spots promptly and avoid getting caught in a situation with a
truck coming into your lane because the driver doesn’t see you. Practice self-preservation Trucks are much larger than cars, and a collision with a truck can result in the car being trampled by the tires or sliding underneath the rig. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that 70 percent of fatalities in accidents involving a car and a truck were people in cars and not trucks. Do whatever you can to steer clear of trucks and give them plenty of room, even if and when truck drivers are in the wrong. It could mean the difference between a pleasurable road trip and a potentially fatal accident. Trucks try to maintain speed When on roadways it can take a while for a truck to reach a cruising speed. Therefore, drivers will usually do what they can to remain at that speed. Otherwise the trickle-down-effect of braking could mean losing pre-
cious momentum, causing a backup on the roadway and wasting expensive fuel. Therefore, a trucker will try to avoid hitting the brakes and could swerve quickly into a left lane to avoid a merging car. Truckers usually hold their speed and let the cars around them adjust, which could make for some scary moments. Trucks also may have speed governors between 60 and 65 miles per hour. In such instances, they cannot move as fast when passing around other trucks and cars. If a truck seems like it is pacing another truck or car, it could just be because it is at max speed and the terrain doesn’t allow the truck to pass effectively. Patience is key in this situation. Driving with trucks requires drivers sharing the roadways with trucks to be more cautious and courteous. Cars are much more maneuverable than trucks, not to mention much more susceptible to damage in an accident.

Big new bike weighs in light By Alexandra Straub
HARLEY STREET 750
$ AUSTIN, TX. – I can’t think of a better time to learn how to ride or a harder time to ride. These juxtaposing thoughts can be explained thusly. There are so many great choices for new riders when it comes to machinery it’s hard to make a decision on what to add to your garage. But the variety also means there are bikes to suit all.

Those wanting to get on sportbikes don’t need to start on a 250 or 300 cc, let alone a 600 cc variant. You can get a 125 cc. Or when it comes to cruisers, you don’t have to start on a machine that might be a little on the heavy side. You can get a competent road partner, which looks cool and doesn’t weigh south of 250 kilos. Enter the 2015 Harley-Davidson Street 750. 222 kilos, soaking wet. Follow us at:

Hitting streets later this year, it’s the first new bike the American motorcycle maker has concocted from scratch in the last 11 years. The last all-new bike was the V-Rod. And with a blank canvas, Harley could start from the ground up, listen to the voices of the customer and translate that into a cruiser that is tailored to urban riding. On the streets of Austin, Texas, a group of international media had the opportunity to take the new machinery for a test drive. While the majority of the route takes us on long, sweeping stretches of country roads, the Street 750 really shines in slow speed environments. Why does it thrive in an urban setting? – For many reasons, the first being that Harley wanted to create a bike for the city rider. A bike that has a low-revving yet silky smooth engine and transmission, a low seat height, a favourable suspen-

sion – for all the potholes and road imperfections one might encounter –and is a bike on which variety of riders can feel comfortable. Let’s start with its all-new engine. The Street 750 is matched with a liquidcooled – yes, liquid! - 749 cc, 60-degree, which gives ample acceleration when you need it, particularly when you’re accelerating from a standstill. Not only that, it doesn’t spew unwanted heat towards the rider when they’re idling. And if you’re like me, and wear full gear even on hot, summer days, you’re incredibly grateful for that. Furthermore, it’s paired to a 6-speed transmission. Normally, stop-go traffic on a Harley would be a pain. However, it wasn’t with the 750. It’s the easiest and lightest clutch I’ve worked with on any of the American motorcycle manufacturer’s bikes. continued on page B11

and pleasantly soft. Not so soft, that it puts you to sleep, but a good balance of urban comfort mixed with open road riding pleasure. Up front, the 37mm telescopic forks and rear twin tubular externally mounted shocks absorb the bumps in the road and leave the rider feeling fine. However, after a day of logging over 200 kilometres, the rear end does feel a little sleepy! General ergonomics are good, though I would have brought the handlebars a little closer to my body. They’re not a stretch for me, but something that would have made the ride more comfortable. I also would have liked a little more “grab” in the front and rear brakes. It seemed like I◆ really had to bite hard into the front brake to get it to slow down. The logic behind that is that new riders are less likely to get in trouble in an event where they are nervous and get a little jumpy. Lastly, fit and finish of the bike could have been neater. Wires were exposed, and it took away from the overall aesthetic. That said the bike

The five cars baby boomers miss the most By Rob Sass
Baby boomers are in full nostalgia mode as they contemplate their lost youth. And as the last generation that really bought into North America’s love affair with the automobile, it’s natural that some of that nostalgia is of the fourwheeled variety. Here are five of the cars that baby boomers miss the most: Pontiac GTO: It’s still hard for Widetrack fans to believe that the entire division is no more. It was a virtual tossup between Nos. 1 and
1965 pontiac gto

2 as to the most missed car, but with the 50th anniversary of the GTO (and arguably the muscle car itself) coming up, it has to be the Goat. Not the Australian Holden-in-disguise that we got from 2004-06, mind you, but the real 196472 bit of classic American muscle. Pontiac Trans Am: With Pontiac and therefore the Firebird gone, it’s reasonably certain that the famous T/A, with surely the most audacious hood decal, is gone for good (at least from GM). For people who just can’t
accept that, performance car genius Ken Lingenfelter will sell you a fantastic Trans Am-inspired Camaro LTA. Chevrolet El Camino: The half-car, half-pickup concept had real legs, lasting from the 1950s through the 1980s. It deserves another shot but GM seems to disagree, having on multiple occasions stubbornly refused to bring back the beloved El Camino. MGB: MG was the sports car Americans loved first, with servicemen bringing back MG TCs after WWII.

Even though woefully outdated, the MGB had little to no competition and could have gone on almost indefinitely.
Rob Sass

When it was introduced in 1962, few could have imagined that the MGB would be the last new MG sold in the U.S. Nonetheless, that’s how it played out. In 1980, with the British auto industry in a free fall, the quaint factory in Abingdon, England, was closed, and that was it for MGs in the U.S. A shame; even though woefully outdated, the MGB had little to no competition and could have gone on almost indefinitely, or at least until 1989, when the Mazda Miata was
introduced. Those of a certain age still miss the little MGB on sunny days. Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon: Nearly every boomer has a story about the Vista Cruiser, whether it’s a road trip from hell or just getting shuttled to school or Cub Scouts or Brownies in one. The Vista Cruiser, with its unique windows on the roof and the back, backseat where misbehaving siblings could be banished, was the official wagon of the wonder years for so many boomers.
