Mineral survey expands to gas industry

Encouraged by its success in finding mineral deposits, the B.C. Liberal government is extending aerial geological surveys to search for water in the natural gas region of British Columbia. Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett announced a $3-million extension of provincial funding for non-profit research organization GeoscienceBC at the recent Minerals North conference in Vanderhoof. The economy of the small community west of Prince George is historically based

on farming and forest products, but one of B.C.’s largest gold mines is in development near there. Bennett said New Gold’s Blackwater mine project, 110 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof, is a direct result of the GeoscienceBC survey that started in 2005 and identified the region as having metal mine potential. New Gold is continuing drilling this summer and proceeding with environmental assessment, planning to start construction once the gold price recovers sufficiently. New Gold expects the mine to generate 1,200 construction jobs and 500 operations

jobs. GeoscienceBC extended its survey last year to search for water aquifers around the major shale gas developments in the northeast. Deep salt-water aquifers can be used as sources of water for hydraulic fracturing and for disposal of contaminated water that comes up with gas. The survey can also detect shallow fresh water aquifers, so they can be avoided in gas drilling and maintained for drinking and irrigation uses. Pole replacement underway A couple of rollovers keep 100 Mile RCMP members busy BC Hydro to replace 10,000 aging power poles this year 100 Mile House RCMP responded to 87 complaints and calls for service during the past week.

Rollover incident Shortly after 3 p.m. on July 6, 100 Mile RCMP and emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle incident on Highway 24 near the intersection of Johns Road. The female driver of a Ford Expedition left the roadway and went into the ditch. Both occupants of the vehicle had minor injuries and were transported to 100 Mile District General Hospital by ambulance. The vehicle had extensive damage and was towed from the scene. Speed and liquor are not believed to be fac-

tors in this collision. No one missing Shortly after 11 p.m. on July 5, 100 Mile RCMP and emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle incident on Highway 97 near the Lac la Hache transfer station. The driver of a 2007 Dodge pickup truck left the road, hit an embankment and rolled several times. The male driver was helped from the vehicle by passers-by. He was assessed at scene and transported to 100 Mile District General Hospital by ambulance. While at the scene,

the driver indicated another person had been in the vehicle. The area was searched until that information was confirmed to be false. Speed was a factor in this collision. The investigation into this matter is continuing. Driving issues There were 12 driving complaints during the past week, and there was

a considerable amount of traffic enforcement conducted. Of note, Traffic Services dealt with an excessive speed incident on Highway 97. A Lower Mainland driver was operating his vehicle at 61km/h over the posted speed limit. He received a violation ticket and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

BC Hydro is advising 100 Mile House residents that crews will be replacing power poles in 100 Mile House during the next several months. The work is part of BC Hydro’s ongoing maintenance program that will see the replacement of more than 10,000 wooden utility poles this year throughout the province. BC Hydro maintains 900,000 wooden poles as part of its electricity distribution system that delivers power to homes

and businesses throughout the province. More than 20 per cent of BC Hydro’s wooden poles have been in service for more than 40 years. In total, BC Hydro’s system includes 56,000 kilometres of distribution lines. Over time, wooden poles weaken due to adverse weather, insects and wildlife. BC Hydro regularly inspects the old poles to determine their strength. Once a pole reaches end-of-life, BC Hydro installs new poles to

improve the safety and reliability of the electrical system. The lifespan of a power pole is 40 to 50 years on average. Pole replacement may require BC Hydro or its contractors to disconnect power. Crews take special care to avoid any unnecessary impacts to customers. However, if these maintenance outages need to be scheduled for safety reasons, BC Hydro or its contractors will let customers know in-person, or by mail or phone.

Eighth annual stinkin’ rose Cook-Off recipe deadline on July 31

Organizers are already busy making preparations for the South Cariboo Garlic Festival, which will be held at the Felker Homestead, located just north of Lac la Hache on Highway 97 on Aug. 23-24. The Master Garlic Chef Recipe Competition is back this year and organizers are now looking for recipes. This year will mark the Eighth Annual Cook-Off and the cash prizes are $1,000, $500 and $250 for first-, second- and third-place respectively. “If you love to cook with garlic, you should check this out,” festival director Jeanette McCrea says, adding

it all starts with a submission of an original recipe by July 31. Three of the recipes will be selected by an independent panel, and the three recipe finalists will then be invited to participate in the CookOff on Aug. 24 at the Garlic Festival. “This event is one of the fun highlights of the festival and always attracts a crowd of interested foodies and garlic lovers.” The rules and instructions for entering the competition are easy to follow. Polish shipyard wins BC Ferries work BC Ferries has awarded a $165-million contract to Remontowa Shipbuilding of Gdansk, Poland to build three new intermediate class vessels for service on the British Columbia coast. Two will replace the 49-year-old Queen of Burnaby on the Comox-Powell River run and the 50-year-old Queen of Nanaimo on the TsawwassenSouthern Gulf Islands route. The third will be used for extra capacity in peak and shoulder seasons for the Southern Gulf Islands. The first new vessel is scheduled to be delivered by August 2016, with the second by October 2016 and the third by February 2017. They will be equipped to use diesel and liquefied natural gas, a first for the BC Ferries fleet. Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyard was shortlisted along with four foreign builders, but withdrew after winning the contract to build BC Ferries’ new cable ferry to serve Denman Island. With that $15 million project and a share of a major federal contract, Seaspan didn’t have the capacity to bid.

Horgan wants Amrik Virk’s resignation over payments

Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk violated spending rules as a university board member in 2010-12 and he should not be allowed to continue as the cabinet minister responsible for enforcing those rules, NDP Leader John Horgan said on June 19. Horgan was commenting on the findings of an investigation into the hiring of two senior executives of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Virk should resign from cabinet or be fired by Premier Christy Clark, he added. The review found that extra “consulting fees” of $50,000 paid to Kwantlen president Alan Davis and former vice-president Anne Lavack were not

reported as part of their compensation, and were paid separately to get around compensation limits when they were being hired. Horgan said Virk, an RCMP inspector in Langley before running in the 2013 B.C. election, knows he broke the rules. “He signed off on a contract for $50,000 with no deliverables to that institution as a pre-employment contract, violating the rules that he was sworn to uphold as the person responsible to that institution,” Horgan said. On June 18, Virk spoke to reporters when the report from assistant deputy minister Rob Mingay was released. He called it “a humbling moment” and said he was not properly informed on the finan-

cial reporting rules for hiring university executives at the time. Virk vowed to make sure current directors of public institutions are properly trained. “In some ways, I almost feel a little bit let down I didn’t have the fullest information at my hand, or the fullest of training as a volunteer board member.” Finance Minister Mike de Jong ordered the review after the extra payments were raised in the British Columbia legislature by NDP advanced education critic David Eby. The results are “troubling,” de Jong said. The government’s Public Sector Employers’ Council (PSEC) set salary ranges for Lavack’s position at $125,000 to $175,000. When Lavack was hired in

2011, she received the maximum salary, plus a $20,000-a-year research allowance and a $50,000 “consulting fee” before starting work that was not reported to PSEC. In the case of Davis, a Kwantlen official’s 2011 e-mail that was copied to Virk inquires about paying the new president an extra $100,000 above PSEC guidelines, from the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation. In a later e-mail, Virk wrote, “our advice at present is to hold off as the risk factors are very high.” A $50,000 consulting fee was later given to Davis, in addition to his $225,000 salary and $35,000 to relocate from New York State.

Know the do’s and don’ts of campfires

Anyone planning to go camping this summer should remember provincial rules about campfire safety. Although large-scale open burning is now prohibited in many regions of the province, small and contained campfires are currently permitted in all six of British Columbia’s fire centres. Detailed information about burning restrictions in B.C. is available on the Wildfire Management Branch (WMB) website at http://bcwildfire.ca/hprScripts/WildfireNews/ Bans.asp. Campfire tips • Always find out if any burning prohibitions are in effect. Check the WMB website at www.bcwildfire.ca. • If campfires are allowed in your area, bring a shovel or keep at least eight litres of water nearby to properly extinguish your campfire. • Campfires cannot be larger than 0.5 metres in height and 0.5 metres in diameter. • Do not light a campfire or keep it burning in windy conditions. Weather can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to combustible material and start new fires. • You must maintain a one-metre fireguard around the campfire. This is a fuel-free area where all flammable materials (grass, kindling, etc.) have been removed. • Never leave a campfire unattended. • Make sure the

campfire is completely extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time. Ensure that cigarette butts are properly extinguished and are not tossed away carelessly. • You may be held accountable for damages and fire suppression costs if your negligence results in a wildfire. So far this season, the Wildfire Management Branch has responded to more than 300 wildfires, and the majority of them were caused by people. Every human-caused fire is preventable. This time of year, before wildfire risks increase significantly throughout the province, is an ideal time for individual homeowners and communities to take simple steps to reduce the potential impacts of wildfire. Be proactive, be practical and be FireSmart. More information

Thanks to financial support from the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Legacy Fund, as well as a generous donation from the Friends of Barkerville and Cariboo Historical Society, Barkerville Historic Town cut the ribbon on a newly restored outdoor exhibit – the Canadian Claim and Gunn Hydraulic Pit (CCGHP) – on the July 1 weekend. The exhibit, which highlights the gold mining efforts of two separate placer operations, the Canadian claim – a typical 1860s cabin and shaft set up for underground diggings – and the Gunn pit – later-century hydraulic process involving long pipes and large water monitors for blasting surface gravels through sluice boxes – was originally built by the Friends of Barkerville in the early-1980s. After nearly 30 years of wear and tear, including wintertime snowfalls averaging 25 feet per season, Barkerville realized it was time to bring a fresh focus to the display. During the National Historic Site’s 150th anniversary in 2012, the Barkerville Heritage Trust partnered with the Friends of Barkerville and Cariboo Goldfields Historical Society to begin restoration

work on the CCGHP. Soon afterwards, the Department of Canadian Heritage and its Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Legacy Fund was on board and two years later the fully-restored and improved exhibit officially opened on Dominion Day (Canada Day) in 2014. “As we approach Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, our government wants Canadians to be able to explore and learn about their history, as well as the important events – like British Columbia’s Cariboo Gold Rush – that have shaped it,” said Canadian Heritage and Official Languages Minister Shelly Glover. “That is why we are pleased to have supported the restoration of Barkerville’s Canadian Claim, which will give residents and visitors a chance to explore the region’s mining heritage.” The CCGHP exhibit in Barkerville is open for interactive viewing throughout the heritage site’s regular operating season. In addition to the cabin and shaft display and hydraulic mining setup, there is also a series of interconnected viewing platforms, complete with interpretive signage, placed strategically along the hillside that allow visitors – through several flights of hand-hewn stairs – to

experience Barkerville in an entirely new way: from overhead. “For me, one of the more exciting things about our newly-restored exhibit is the opportunity to view the entire town of Barkerville from the top-down,” said James Douglas, Barkerville’s

manager of Visitor Experiences. “It’s a glorious way to see the tremendous scope of our site from several different angles, and will no doubt be a boon for amateur photographers and any visitor who wants to see Barkerville in a whole

The new Ronald McDonald House BC opens in June. A home away from home for seriously ill children receiving treatment at BC Children’s Hospital, the new and bigger House has enough room to welcome 73 families every day, keeping 2,500 families per year together when it matters most.
