New doctor coming at end of July Dr. Karen Fordham will open a local practice in Cranbrook S A L LY M AC D O N A L D Townsman Staff

A new family doctor is moving to Cranbrook at the end of the month. Dr. Karen Fordham is relocating from Moncton, New Brunswick to open a practice in Cranbrook, filling one of at least five vacant GP positions in the community. The East Kootenay Division of Family Practice announced the recruitment on Wednesday, July 9. Dr. Fordham will be joining the F.W. Green Clinic, but it is yet to be determined when and if she will be accepting new patients, according to the Division. There are nearly 4,000 people in Cranbrook who don’t have a family doctor, which is roughly 20 per cent of Cranbrook residents. Five family doctors have closed down their Cranbrook practice this year: three at the F.W. Green Clinic, and two at the Associate Clinic.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark stopped in Cranbrook on Thursday, July 10, first speaking at a special combined Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club lunch, then making an announcement about energy efficiency programs at B.C. Hydro’s Cranbrook headquarters (see full story, Page 3). But first, the Premier was greeted by a group of more than 150 protesters outside the Heritage Inn, where the luncheon was held. Consist-

ing of teachers from Cranbrook, Kimberley, Creston and Invermere, along with CUPE and Steelworkers supporters, the group marched from the Tamarack Centre along both sides of the strip to the Heritage Thursday morning to meet the Premier. Negotiations for a new collective agreement between the B.C. government and teachers’ union have stalled after a teachers’ strike and lockout closed schools down early for the summer.

Hundreds at Golden Life express happiness Video featuring residents, staff and international hit song launches Friday, July 11

Barry Coulter

Hundreds of seniors in southern B.C. and Alberta have given the world a definition of happiness, thanks to a globally popular song and a video that is being launched today, Friday, July 11. Golden Life, a seniors’ housing, care and service provider in the region, is releasing a video dub showing residents and staff expressing their inner happiness to the accompani-

ment of “Happy,” a hugely successful song by American singer Pharrell Williams. The idea for the video came from Landon Elliott, a marketing director with Golden Life, after he noted that the song had been licensed by the United Nations for the International Day of Happiness, so that different versions could be created in different nations and cultures, expressing the happiness

and joy that the song represents. “I thought it would be really interesting to see how our residents and staff expressed happiness,” Elliott said. Golden Life set about securing the licensing rights for their own video, which would involve hundreds of seniors and staff dancing along and acting out joyously for the cameras while the song played. Golden Life operates 12 seniors housing sites

across southern B.C. and Alberta, with about 1,300 residents in total, and Elliott and the video crew visited them all — including the newly opened site in Calgary. “A lot of driving,” he said. The whole process of making the film took a month. Jason Beauchene, of Cranbrook’s Audiotomic Video Production, did the videography and editing. “We went to all the

sites — two a week,” Elliott said. “I brought a boom box, gathered residents and staff together, and asked, what’s it like to be happy at (whichever site the crew was at)?” Elliott said he led the way by dancing along behind the camera, but the subjects in front of the camera set to with gusto. “We gave the option for every senior to participate — not everybody did,” he said. But hundreds of seniors did participate. “We came away with between 600 and 800 clips,” Elliott said. “But we only had the licensing for four minutes. So we had to edit it down to about 130 clips.” Those 130 clips were edited into a brisk four minute video — a portrait of Golden Life residents, staff and happiness. Since most of the clips are group shots, the video involves hundreds of seniors and Golden Life staff, dancing and emoting to this catchiest, happiest of songs. All aspects of life at Golden Life are captured, from the kitchens at Joseph Creek Village in Cranbrook to the Senior Prom at Castlewood Village Castlegar. “We’ve given people a chance to get up on stage, show off, and show people what happiness is,” Elliott said. While the published version of the video is only four minutes long, an extended version was created, so that every person who participated in the video could have some screen time. The extended version was made available

to each of Golden Life’s facilities, and will be shown on the facilities’ big screen theatres. The video launches today, Friday, July 11, on Golden Life’s website

Clark speaks at Cranbrook Chamber luncheon Continued from page 1 Shelley Balfour, president of the Cranbrook and District Teachers Association, said the rally was a call for the Premier to take action to alleviate the hostility. “Her kid is in private school. That’s all well and good. These kids are not in private school; their parents can’t afford it, nor do they want to put their kids in private school, nor should they have to.

It should be a public education system, well funded like it used to be,” said Balfour outside the Heritage. She called on the province to return to the bargaining table “in good faith and with good intent”. “What they say in public and what they are doing in private are two very, very different things and I need the public to understand that.”

Inside the Heritage, Premier Clark was welcomed by a sold-out crowd of almost 200 people who attended the luncheon. She received a standing ovation upon her arrival and her speech was punctuated by several rounds of applause as she spoke about the benefits of living in B.C., and how the province is working hard to leverage B.C.’s natural resources, Pacific access and its citi-

zens to build a stronger economy. Premier Clark pointed out that two out of every three dollars in B.C.’s economy comes from natural resources that are supported in rural communities like Cranbrook. “It is so important that the people of our province understand where it is that we get the money for those lattes, where it is that we get the money for the wealth that we

enjoy in urban B.C. every single day.” She congratulated Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett on helping to balance the B.C. budget, and said she supports his outspoken personality. “I think that the way to succeed in politics is to say what you think and to try and be honest with people, and to just put it out there in lots of ways and to sometimes do things that people don’t expect you to do.

That’s why I welcomed Bill Bennett back into cabinet.” But the pressure was turned up during question period, when Premier Clark was asked the anonymous question, “Why is it that your government has decided that the children of B.C. are entitled to less?” She referred to a Conference Board of Canada assessment that found B.C. has “the best education system

Premier talks energy savings

BC Hydro, Fortis BC are partnering to offer rebates that the province hopes will counter the 28 per cent rate increase announced last year S a l ly M ac D o n a l d Townsman Staff

BC Hydro and Fortis BC are offering a suite of energy efficiency programs to help B.C. residents counter the energy rate increases announced last year. Premier Christy Clark announced the government’s expansion of energy efficiency programs with broadened eligibility requirements during her visit to Cranbrook on Thursday, July 10. Joining Premier Clark for the announcement at Cranbrook’s BC Hydro headquarters was Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines. BC Hydro, a Crown corporation, and Fortis BC, a private energy provider, are together spending $5.4 million on programs to reduce energy costs, targeted at low-income households. “Reducing, reusing, recycling – we talk about it, but they are really hard to do, and it’s certainly hard to reduce the amount of energy that you use,” said Premier Clark. “You can take a couple days off from having a shower, you can decide you want to cut down on the number of loads of laundry that you want to do, you can turn off your lights. But for lots of people, they do those things and it’s really hard to find a way to get further savings in the amount that you reduce.”

Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett, Premier Christy Clark, and BC Hydro’s Gary Hamer and Joanna Sofield (left to right) demonstrate the products available in the new Energy Saving Kit, which will be provided free of charge to low-income households in B.C. Gary Hamer is Manager of Residential Sector Technology and Innovation for BC Hydro, and Joanna Sofield is General Manager of Customer Care. It will be easier for British Columbians to apply for the programs, and about double the number of B.C. residents will be eligible for the programs that will lead to energy savings, the Premier said. “These upgrades are going to help homeowners reduce their costs by up to 30 per cent. “It’s about making sure that we find a way to meet the needs of British Columbians by using less of this incredibly valuable resource and making sure that we are conserving our environment in the process.” Minister Bennett said the announcement follows on

from the news last November that BC Hydro rates will increase by 28 per cent over the next five years. “At that time we indicated that we were going to spend the next few months trying to get together programs that would assist low-income British Columbians to deal with the increase in electricity rates. That’s what this announcement is about here today.” There are three programs that British Columbians will be able to take advantage of, and the province has increased the income cut-off so more people are eligible – about 20 per cent of Hydro customers, and about 30 per

cent of Fortis customers. Under the Energy Conservation and Assistance Program, low-income households can get free energy assessments and installation of energy saving products, ranging from $300 to $5,000. The Home Energy Rebate Offer (HERO) offers homeowners new rebates, which have a total value of $6,000 per household, including a $750 bonus offer for installing three or more upgrades, such as Energy Star windows, high efficiency heating systems, insulation and draft proofing. Finally, British Columbians can order an Energy

Saving Kit on BC Hydro’s website that will be mailed to them free of charge. It contains products such as compact fluorescent light bulbs, weather stripping, fridge thermometers and a high efficiency showerhead that could save homes $100 a year on their energy bill. You can find out more about the programs by visiting www.bchydro.com/ homerebates. The East Kootenay Energy Diet is also a good way to access the rebates and find out which ones apply to your household. For more information, contact info@ eked.ca or phone 250-5310690.

in the country”, before addressing the teachers’ job action. “We have put about $1.2 billion on the table with the teachers union. That’s a combination of wages and support for improving class composition, making sure that there are the kinds of special needs supports in classrooms to make it easier for the kids to learn and for teachers to teach,” said Clark. “We think that it’s possible for the teachers’ union to find a way to come to an agreement on some of these issues in a way that’s affordable for taxpayers, and a way that’s fair to all of the other public sector workers out there who have already settled for a similar amount to what we are offering to the teachers’ union.” She reiterated the province’s call for a 10year agreement with B.C. teachers. “If all we do is every two or three years bicker about wages, we spend not enough time talking about quality education for kids. We have to find a way to get kids out of the middle of this fight all the time.” The Premier was also asked about the status of the Cranbrook homeless shelter project — she said the province is trying to find funding for it — and the recent Supreme Court Aboriginal land title decision. “Certainty and clarity are good, and the Supreme Court decision reflects lots of things that we are already doing in B.C. and we are going to continue to do with First Nations, who just like the rest of us want jobs for their communities and a better future for their kids,” she said. Finally, Premier Clark confirmed the province’s commitment that every British Columbian will have a family doctor by 2015. “It’s going to be a tough challenge for us to get to, but we are going to continue to try to get there through incentives for rural doctors, (and) training for rural doctors in rural communities.”

Kimberley’s big summer festival one week away C AROLYN GRANT Daily Bulletin

Kimberley and Cranbrook have the reputation for being “last minute” towns. But seasoned JulyFesters know exactly when to go for tickets or sign up before an event sells out. Kimberley’s big summer festival is one week away, and Kimberley Chamber Manager Mike Guarnery would like to say that for bocce players, if you haven’t signed up yet, the sign up time is now —literally. “We are taking registrations until Friday at noon (July 11) and then we have to cut it off so we can get the draw ready,” Guarnery said. There are still spaces available. You can sign up online at www.kimberleyjulyfest.com. While at the JulyFest

website, you can also purchase tickets for the Saturday night dance/ concert at the Civic Centre featuring Wide Mouth Mason and Big Sugar. Guarnery is very excited about the concert. “It’s going to be such a great show,” he said. “It’s two iconic Canadian rock and blues bands.” See an exclusive interview with Big Sugar’s Gordie Johnson in Monday’s Daily Townsman. Once you have signed up your bocce team or purchased your concert tickets online, you can pick up wristbands and tickets at the Chamber office at 253 Wallinger. Picking them up at the office will avoid congestion at the gates. Those not playing bocce but wanting to soak up the live music and atmosphere at the

Rotary Drive site will be charged $5 per day or $10 for the weekend. That helps pay for the local bands who provide live entertainment at the bocce pits. The Entertainment schedule is as follows: Friday, July 18, 2014 • The Hollers - 4 pm – 5:30 pm •Hot Muck - 6 pm – 7:30 pm • Alex Buterman - 8 pm – 9:30 pm • Sketch - 10 pm – 11:30 pm Saturday, July 19 • The Pursuits - 10 am – 11 am • The Oak Republic 12 pm – 1:30 pm • The Bison Brothers - 2 pm – 3:30 pm • Split Shift - 4 pm – 5:30 pm • Elk Hunt - 6 pm – 7:30 pm • Cooked Line - 8 pm – 9 pm

Kids out of School? Keep them busy! CARRIERS WANTED

The Chamber has arranged for a Noise Bylaw variance so the bands can play until 11:30 p.m on Friday. Music stops at 9 p.m. Saturday so everyone can head to the dance. Volunteers are still required although many have already signed on. “We need more help pouring beer Friday evening and Saturday afternoon,” Guarnery said. “And we can always use help with tear down on Sunday evening and all day Monday. It’s hot, everyone is tired by that time, so the more help the better. We could also use more bocce refs. We do have a good list of volunteers though. Kimberley has always been very helpful.” Heat will be an issue. The current heat wave is forecast to continue

through the JulyFest weekend and Guarnery urges everyone to keep the heat in mind and take on lots of water. “We’ll have an aid station set up and water available,” he said. The parade is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. “The United Church will open its doors at 3:30 a.m. for those getting ready for the parade. There will be washrooms, coffee and muffins available.” It is a very busy time for the Chamber with JulyFest and Guarnery says he couldn’t do it without his organizing team. “Dave Clark is doing such a great job organizing everything. I don’t know what I’d do without him. And Meg Chapman is coordinating all the volunteers.”

New doctor to open Cranbrook practice at the end of July Continued from page 1

Meanwhile, doctors in the hospital emergency department have expressed their concerns about orphaned patients who are forced into the hospital for care, which is not ideal for the patient and overtaxes medical staff. Dr. Fordham was recruited to join Cranbrook’s medical community through a new collaboration between family doctors, the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce, the City of Cranbrook, the Regional District of East Kootenay, Interior Health and the College of the Rockies. It is connected to the province’s A GP For Me program, a joint initiative of the doctors of B.C. and the provincial government. Dr. Fordham, who has just completed her residency in New Brunswick, toured Cranbrook in May and was the first physician to be part of Cranbrook’s Red Carpet Welcome program. The program gives family doctors considering practicing in

Cranbrook detailed information about the community and coordinates an initial familiarization visit based on the visiting doctors’ professional and personal needs. “Our Red Carpet Welcome program is off to a great start,” said Dr. Greg Andreas, physician lead for the EK Division. “This first recruitment shows the benefit of taking a collaborative approach to managing Cranbrook’s doctor shortage.” During the visit, Dr. Fordham toured local clinics and regional recreation amenities and meet with representatives from schools and other organizations relevant to her and her family. The task force also hosted a welcome luncheon with local family physicians, health care providers and community leaders. The goal of the program is to allow physicians to find out if the community is a good match not only for them, but also for their spouses and their children.

Clancy’s obsession Mike Selby

Wanda King was unhappy. A prominent eye surgeon, King had married her college sweetheart who sold insurance in her grandfather’s firm. After the two saved enough money to purchase the company outright, the two settled down in a quiet Baltimore suburb to raise four kids. Everything appeared to be going well until 1976, when her husband read a newspaper article about a Russian frigate crew who tried to defect to Sweden. For some reason, King’s husband became obsessed with this article, and wouldn’t stop talking about it. He began to read everything he could find even remotely related to the story, and somehow gained permission from Maryland’s Naval Institute to use their library. He had soon acquired enough information to fill a book, and then announced to his wife that this was his intention. None of this upset King until her husband began to spend every evening and every weekend working on his book instead of spending time with the family. As unhappy as this made her, she knew her husband couldn’t spend forever working on his book. He didn’t, and had finished typing the last page in February of 1983. Maryland’s Naval Institute not only had a large research library, but also operated an academic press, and King’s husband submitted his manuscript to it. The editors at the press were completely unprepared for what was handed in. It was 600 pages of some of the best writing any of them had ever read. Unfortunately, they would be unable to publish it. They were an academic press; this manuscript was a work of fiction. However, by the end of the day, the Naval Institute Press announced they were launching a new fiction line. They offered King’s husband a $3,000 advance, and would print a run of 5,000 copies. Everyone involved knew they would be hard pressed to sell this many, and (initially) they were right. Later that year, after a White House press brief-

ing, a reporter saw a book on top of President Reagan’s speech material. Asking what he was reading, Reagan said someone had given him the book as a gift. It wa called “The Hunt for Red October,” written by Tom Clancy, an insurance salesman. “It,” the President began, “is the perfect yarn.” And that’s how it began. One errant question from a reporter, and “The Hunt for Red October” became the most desired book in the world. Barely able to keep up with the demand, the paperback rights were sold to Penguin/Putnam, who printed and sold 3 million copies. Clancy’s insurance selling days were over, and he became a full time novelist. He followed his debut with “Patriot Games,” the story of the IRA’s attempt to kidnap Princess Diana. This was followed by “Clear and Present Danger,” “The Sum of All Fears,” “Without Remorse,” “Rainbow Six” and “Command Authority.” All of these books feature “Red October” protagonist Jack Ryan, an historian and analyst who finds himself in one military crisis after the other. Of the 20 books Clancy has written, 17 have reached number one on the New York Times best seller list. His book advance price had risen from $3,000 for his first novel to $97 million by 1998. Of course not everyone is impressed with Clancy’s work. The author appears to be forever stuck in the Cold War, with American characters doing no wrong against the chronically evil Arabs and Russians. While these criticisms are entirely correct, no one picks up a Tom Clancy novel looking for cultural sensitivity. Whether it was his original plan, or a type of penance for ignoring his family while writing his first book, Wanda King — Clancy’s wife — appears in every novel as Jack Ryan’s wife; a prominent eye surgeon. Clancy died last year of heart failure at age 66. Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Every student in our schools is special, and each has their own unique needs that should be catered to. We are fortunate enough to have wonderful teachers in the East Kootenay who care deeply about each and every student in their classroom, none of whom can be described in just one particular way. Little Jane may have Attention Deficit Disorder, but she could also be a great artist, a good person to call on when a new kid joins the class and needs a buddy, and have a love of sports. But these statistics do illustrate a point that teachers have been making for the past few months: their contract negotiations with the province are not just about wages. The stalled talks are also about the amount of support teachers receive for students with special needs. When some teachers in Cranbrook work in schools where 17 per cent of the students have special needs, it seems understandable that they are holding their ground and asking for more help. You can search for data from your child’s school at www.vancouversun.com/ health/students+majority+more+than+schools+Metro+Vancouver/10005768/ story.html. Opinion/Events Letters to the Editor

A foul idea Mayor Stetski and Cranbrook council members should consider the opinions of residents very carefully before voting to allow chickens to be raised within the City of Cranbrook. Regardless of whether other communities allow this practice it is not in the best interest of the majority of Cranbrook residents to allow chickens to be harboured within city boundaries.

Limits and restrictions set through bylaw regulations invariably will be exceeded, birds abandoned and coops not maintained, all of which could lead to inter-neighbour disputes and health and safety issues. A close parallel to this would be the lack of consideration some cat owners have for their neighbours and city bylaws and the inability of animal enforcement personnel to control cats despite their best efforts.

Most importantly there is the potential for attracting an increased number of wild predators into the city which is a concern not to be taken lightly; a factor which Kimberley City Council wisely used in deciding not to change their bylaw to allow this practice. Chicken raising within the Cranbrook city limits — a foul idea! Jim Kennedy Cranbrook

The gene with a thousand faces “Each person has the same set of genes – about 20,000 in all. The differences between people come from slight variations in their genes. For example, all people have genes for hair colour and different versions of these genes dictate whether someone will be a redhead or a brunette. There also might be some chemistry involved.” A Google explanation

ight in front of me here is a story that I clipped from this esteemed paper some time ago. I was delighted that the editor elected to run this news item because it piqued my curiosity and actually roused me from the usual evening stupor. The article is about the Denisovan gene that, apparently, allows some people, like the Tibetans, the Han Chinese and some Sherpas, to live well at extremely high altitudes. I was charmed to read that the Denisovan gene had been inherited from the extinct people (hominids, not proper humans like us) whose remains were found in a Siberian cave. These hominids were living the life of Reilly, even high on the hog, 50,000 years ago but, even though they had that special gene, still died. Despite cries of anguish from some folk, most of us now believe that human beings didn’t suddenly appear on the earth, out of sea-shells, from the ground with corn, or from some fanciful garden with serpents. They evolved slowly in Africa somewhere

then moved out and gradually spread across the world, arriving somewhat late in the Americas. When I heard about all of this I was horrified to realize that folk arrived in Australia before they stumbled upon England’s green and pleasant land and invented soccer. I am now so old that I remember the Piltdown Man scam. This was back in the early 20th century when some rogue seeking fame and fortune claimed that he had unearthed the remains of a creature that was part monkey and part human, and was one of our ancestors on his way to becoming human. It was a paleoanthropological Peter — I love that Warland hoax word and use it often when I play Scrabble. Eventually, it was discovered that the remains consisted of the lower jawbone of an orangutan (a kind of ape) deliberately combined with the cranium of a fully developed modern human and would have looked a bit like a professional wrestler or a Toronto mayor. Of course, this hoax was perpetrated before we all knew about genes and DNA and stuff, right? Take the example of the chimpanzees. Some scientists, probably with dandruff raining from their heads, have stated that there never was a creature that was half ape and half human; it’s just that we and

chimpanzees, for example, have common ancestors. If we could trace a female chimp’s lineage back through the mothers for a few hundred thousand generations or so we’d discover an ancestor that didn’t look like a chimpanzee. Then, if we followed another of that creature’s female children forward through a few million years to the present, we might find ourselves with a bunch of trouble in the form of a human female, probably like your great aunt Matilda, the one that goes ape and tongue-lashes everyone in sight. In fact, we’d find if we were looking through a microscope for a long, long time at a one-celled critter living in a murky primeval sea billions of years ago, it might be the ancestor of all life forms, and that includes sperm whales, banana palms, grizzly bears, mosquitos and even some of your neighbours (some of whom falsely claim that they came from the Ukraine). Incidentally, there are probably other folk who do not live in the high regions of Central Asia but have that Denisovan gene; you might be lucky to be one. Several folk have climbed Everest and sundry other Himalayan peaks without the aid of supplemental oxygen. Some people have another gene that enables them to stay under water for much longer than most folk. There is almost certainly some gene that some people have that enables them to read my drivel without going stark raving mad.

Breaking barriers: Support services available My name is Raux, and I have a disability. This is the fifth in a weekly series about living with a disability in a community like Cranbrook. What kinds of support services are available to people who require help with their daily living needs? Fortunately there are several options available to you, the first step is to admit you need help and then ask. Home Support: This service is available through the Health Unit where you will meet with a case manager and have your needs assessed. This is an important stepping stone to other services, as this will help you determine what you need help with and how much time you need on a daily basis. The most important lesson I learned was how to accept help—I am an independent, stubborn and proud person. While I did require help it is not always an easy transition, especially if the choice is not your own. CSIL: CSIL or Choice in Supports for Independent Living is a program that allows you—or a board on your behalf—to manage your own care. You’ll be responsible for all aspects, including: accounting;

training, hiring and firing staff; scheduling and backup services; etc. With Home Support all the care aids are certified and have been vetted by their hiring process for you. With CSIL you have the option to hire care aids without certification or prior experience and you have to take all necessary precautions when bringing strangers into your home. Caseworkers through the Health Unit can assist you with the CSIL application process if you think this is a viable option for you. Typically you’ll have to have been using the Home Support services for two years to qualify for CSIL. Home Support is like training—for you—to learn your needs, scheduling, accepting help and working with others before you can graduate to the CSIL Program. Private Services: There are a few companies that offer care aids for personal care, respite and housekeeping services. They may offer a wider range of services; however, they can be costly. They may be a good option as a backup for your regular care aids. Students: I have now hired three students while they were enrolled in the nurs-

ing program at the College of the Rockies. This is win-win for both of us as my a.m. shift ends before classes start and dinner is after classes are out. I work full-time myself so I only have a few hours here and there to distribute amongst my staff, which works nicely with a school/study workload. This allows them to work in their chosen field and gain valuable hands-on experience before they’ve started the practicum phase of their course. I would be interested in working with the college to see if these students could receive credit towards their course or recognition of an internship/work experience program—I wonder if more community members would be interested in working with these students if this option was available to them? Depending on others for help with your daily living needs can be hard and even stressful but good communication and patience can go a long way. Try not to micromanage; stressing over little details or rushing will only add pressure and can lead to easily avoidable mistakes. Sincerely, Raux

Whitecaps raising profile of pro soccer TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

With Western Canada as their backyard, the Vancouver Whitecaps have focused on expanding their presence in British Columbia and is actively running academies across the province. While the club has had a presence in the West Kootenay with a prospect centre in Nelson, the time has come to have a permanent presence in the East Kootenay. Brett Adams, the regional coach who is based out of Nelson and runs one such academy, has been working in the East Kootenay, assessing the viability of setting up a year-round prospects centre in Cranbrook. It’s moved from a vision to reality, with tryouts beginning next fall. “We’ve sustained a very good program through the fall, winter and spring phases, we always have good numbers,” said Adams. “On the back of that, we gave KEYSA some technical direction, which assistant coach Sam Heap took on, and that was very successful. We got great feedback from the KEYSA board. “So much so, that we’ve identified that there needs to be a prospects group within this area.” While it will be based on tryouts, Adams says the exclusivity of the program will only help the players who make the cut. “We want to give some of these kids more opportunity to go to Vancouver, go to a [MLS] game, to go and be trained by some of the more elite staff,” Adams said. That became all the more tangible this past week when some Whitecaps celebrities came to Cranbrook to take part in a skills camp, as current Whitecaps forward Omar Salgado and Whitecaps executive Sam Lenarduzzi were on hand for a Q&A and autograph session on Wednesday. Lenarduzzi, a former professional soccer

Local kids got to hang out with a couple soccer celebrities on Wednesday to wrap up a skills camp at Moir Park. Omar Salgado (centre) is a professional soccer player for the Vancouver Whitecaps, while Sam Lenarduzzi, (right) is a member of the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame who manages regional development for the club. Brett Adams (left) is the regional coach for the same organization and is based out of Nelson. player with the Whitecaps and a member of the national team, has moved into an executive role with the club where he oversees regional development programs across the province. “I think when you put on camps like this, you’re always looking to find that diamond in the rough, and you have to go everywhere to find it,” Lenarduzzi said. “Just because this is out-oftown, doesn’t mean that there not here. “In areas even outside of Vancouver such as Squamish or even up in Williams Lake, some of our national team players have come from those areas, so I think it’s valuable for us to do it. “…The big thing we’re trying to do is create a pathway for those kids out there that really want to be at this level.” World Cup fever It’s safe to say Lenarduzzi knows his stuff. Born in Italy, his family moved to Canada when he was very young, and settled in Vancouver. He didn’t start playing soccer until he was 12 years old, but

that didn’t hold him back from embarking on a professional career, mainly with the Whitecaps. He also played on the national team, and watched his brother, Bob, compete in Canda’s only appearance in the World Cup in 1986 in Mexico. Lenarduzzi had retired a year before, but attended the tournament as a colour broadcaster. Though he was on the sidelines, it was still the event of a lifetime, he said. “It shows you, when you go to a tournament like that, the passion in this world about soccer,” Lenarduzzi continued. “When you go a World Cup, it’s an experience, and everybody should go to one, just to understand how big of a game it is.” Unfortunately, the Canadians were held off of the scoresheet in all three games, which ended in losses. However, it gave Lenarduzzi a close up view of how Canada played against some of the best players in the world. “For the players who

were there, and for me, it just goes to show what things we need to do, to get to the level you’re playing against, because there’s a lot of work there,” Lenarduzzi said. Qualifying for the World Cup is a gruelling process with over 30 national teams vying for four spots in the CONCACAF governing body, which encompasses North and Central America and the Caribbean. “When the groups are put together, the Mexicos and the USA’s are pretty well in our group, so you’ve got some pretty established countries,” said Lenarduzzi. “Mexico, other than a little bit of a bad patch they went through, have always been the dominate one, even though now, if you look at the United States, they beat them on a regular basis. “The United States can show you what you can do if you decide to put resources and effort behind things and I think on the Canadian side, that’s where we need to restructure a bit and do it that way.”

Developing homegrown talent If Canadian players are going to become elite soccer players, they have to play in top-tier leagues. Enter the MLS. That’s where the value of the regional programs come in, where the Whitecaps can identify kids who have talent and the drive and aspire to play at a higher level. “We, as a club, if we can get more homegrown players, it’s good for us, it’s good for the national team, so I think it’s good for a lot of things,” said Lenarduzzi. “We here in Vancouver are probably the leaders in it. A lot of the other ones look towards us as a model as the way it works. “But Montreal has gotten good at it, they’ve got a few homegrown players in their group and so does Toronto, so I think they’re following it and throughout the league, it’s popping up all over the place.” The MLS is also becoming a destination for some quality players, as English star Thierry

Henry is playing for the New York Red Bulls, while Brazilian Kaka has signed on to play for the MLS expansion club Orlando City FC. The Whitecaps also have some elite talent of their own, luring Pedro Morales from a European league and also nabbing Nigel Reo-Coker from England. “The way the league is set up right now, I think it’s here for the long term. We’re starting to attract some good players,” said Lenarduzzi. “Mr. Morales, I’m sure, could’ve found many teams in the league other than ours and made a lot of money, but he chose to come here and [Nigel] ReoCoker is another example. “I think we’ve got some good players here, we have to develop our own, but at the same token, I think it [professional soccer] has grown.” Living the dream The Whitecaps added more international flavour to their roster with the addition of Omar

Salgado in 2011, selecting him first overall from the MLS SuperDraft. Salgado, a forward with the club, joined Lenarduzzi at Moir Park as an example of a current professional MLS player for the skills camp. Suffering through a slog of injuries over the last two years with his foot, Salgado is finally healthy and playing matches with the team this season. “It’s a dream come true. It’s a blessing and a curse—a little bit of both,” said Salgado, on being the first overall selection four years ago. “With that, comes a lot of pressure and expectation that you have to live up to and something I’m still trying to live up to right now.” Born in El Paso, Texas, Salgado grew up playing soccer, guided by his father. “He loved the sport, he was always pushed me to do what I could in the sport,” Salgado said. “He wanted me to be a professional soccer player and I pursued that dream as well. “He’s always been inspiring to me.” He knew that becoming a professional soccer player was a tangible goal after getting called up to the U17 U.S. national team as a 15-yearold. “I got called up into the U17 national team, to live in Florida for a couple months and from there on, I knew maybe this is possible,” Salgado said. “After that, I kept pursuing—left for Mexico for two years and then got drafted here. “It all happened really fast.” Though the two years of injures have been an inconvenience—he broke his foot twice—he is now back on the pitch helping the Whitecaps climb the MLS rankings. “The team is doing well,” Salgado said. “We’re in fifth place right now, but with two games in hand, so we can do something big this year. I think that we have the team to do it. The players that we have right now can win the MLS Cup if we get the opportunity.”

of not paying severance to people who quit. Finance Minister Mike de Jong announced Thursday that BCLC and all public sector organizations will have the same rules as the senior public service, including a oneyear ban on taking a job with organizations that have done business with the government entity. The internal audit reviewed Graydon’s appointment calendar and email records for the period when he was discussing his new role with Paragon. It did not find any disclosure of confidential BCLC information or decisions benefiting Paragon made during that time. The audit also found that Graydon was allowed to keep BCLC-issued mobile devices, and that his access to the BCLC computer system remained in place for 10 days after he left.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am having a hard time forgetting my boyfriend’s past. Before we met, he subscribed to girlie magazines, went to strip clubs, bought lap dances, etc. I have always felt those things are degrading and disrespectful to women. He also has said he fantasizes about other women. Whenever I see him staring at a hot girl, it makes me think of his past. I do believe he loves me, but I can’t help it. This is causing problems in our relationship. How do I get beyond this? -- Hard Time Forgiving Dear Hard Time: A lot of men subscribe to girlie magazines and have visited strip clubs. As long as he has stopped doing these things, we wouldn’t worry about that part of his past. Fantasizing is common (women do it, too) and is not a concern unless he acts on it, although he would be wise to stop discussing his fantasies, since you become so upset. You and your boyfriend could look into couples counseling to see whether that can help you work through this. But if you cannot let go of his past, we hope you will let go of him. You both deserve a relationship where you feel secure and not judged. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Frustrated Employee” and can empathize. It seems no one ever gets punished, fired or held accountable for not doing their jobs. I, too, am frustrated with the entitled attitude of many co-workers. It’s downright theft when they habitually pad timecards, use sick leave for a personal day, show up late, take long lunch hours, leave early, etc. And if you are brave enough to complain to management, you are told that this matter will be taken under advisement (and never is), or you are accused of not being a “team player” and blamed for your negative attitude toward your co-workers. You try to just do your job, but it is difficult when you share responsibilities on a project, and the other person doesn’t carry their weight. Why should I suffer ulcers, sleepless nights, short lunches at my desk and long days in order to support someone else’s lack of work ethic? You suggested that “Frustrated Employee” put out an updated resume, but it’s possible this person has benefits that cannot be replaced, isn’t able to relocate for another position or is close to retirement. Why do the rules only apply to the few? From experience, I know that some things will never change. But why are we condoning the actions of those who are not productive and condemning those who are? -- Another Frustrated Employee Writing on His Own Time Dear Another: The reason for your ulcers and frustration is that you think there is some way to transform the useless co-workers or hold management accountable. But there isn’t. If management chooses to ignore incompetent employees, the business suffers, but your choice is simply to stay or go. If you choose to stay, for whatever reason, it helps to tune out what you cannot fix. Do your job, document your efforts, put a smile on your face and ignore the rest. Conscientious, capable employees like you feel responsible for the success of the company and want their efforts appreciated. But if the company doesn’t care, please let yourself off the hook. Dear Annie: This is in regard to “Proud Mom,” who didn’t like it when people attempted to touch her baby. There are quite a few places where she can find signs that attach to car seats and strollers saying, “Please Don’t Touch the Baby.” I found plenty offered online, and she could even make her own. Of course, it won’t stop everyone, but it might help a little. -- Completely Understand Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. and love him a lot? Having Fun and Feeling Giddy

Dear Having Fun and Feeling Giddy: Now girls, do you think if I could predict the lottery I would be sitting here and emailing you right now? Not a chance; I would be sitting under a bongo tree on some exotic island and drinking mint cold ice tea and eating chocolates. You silly girls! Your dad is going to be fine after he gets his operation. We see his energy level is very low at this time and in or around November his health will start to improve and his energy level will be a lot better. Your grandpa does come and visit you and your mom quite often and he is pointing to a dog that he is holding telling me that he has the dog. I don’t know if this makes any sense to you or not. Email me back and let me know. You both have a wonderful relationship and all the lottery money in the world will not buy the kind of relationship you two have worked on to have. Good for you and God Bless you both. Wendy

Hi Wendy: My mom and I read your column all the time and we have decided to email you and ask you a few questions. First of all, the silly question of can you predict lottery winnings and if you do can you tell us if we will win any money this year? What we want to know and are kind of afraid to ask you is about my dad. He has to go for another operation this year and we were wondering if he will be okay and if his health will improve after he has the operation? We would also like to know if my grandpa comes to visit my mom and me? We miss him

relax and travel a bit they told me. They want to spend some time travelling and seeing their friends and relatives this year. Do you see them travelling much this year? I would also like to know if you see me getting a promotion in my job this year? My husband and I have decided not to have any children and we want to travel the world together. Do you

Hello Wendy: Thank you for the emails telling me what information you needed to help me with my questions. I was wondering if you could tell me how my mom and dad are doing physically and mentally right now. They just sold their house and moved into a condo and I know the change for them was hard. They are getting older now and want to

Media reports say five wolves walked around without disturbing two female polar bears that were asleep at the time. The tunnel forced the zoo to remove the wolves and the two bears and close part of the new Journey to Churchill exhibit until repairs could be made. The critters are now back in their respective enclosures and the exhibit has reopened. A zoo spokesman says such adjustments are absolutely normal with the opening of any new exhibit.
