Nixon ready to work hard for Wildrose party after winning nomination race By Treena Mielke Jason Nixon, the recent winner in a nomination race for Wildrose, won’t be taking any holidays this summer, although two of his brothers are tying the knot and he plans to be present at both weddings. Nixon, the former Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre constituency president defeated MLA Joe Anglin in a nomination race 242 to 122. With the nomination win behind him as of July 5, Nixon has no plans to sit on his laurels and already is immersing himself in issues throughout the riding. “My number one job is focusing on the members in the entire riding,” he said. He plans to be in Rimbey today (Tuesday) at Whitgan Creations and Gifts from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and looks forward to meeting with constituents during that time. The issues in the large riding differ and he plans to do what he can to help each municipality achieve their goals. A new hospital in Rocky Mountain House, flood mitigation in Sundre and aging infrastructure in Rimbey are all issues that deserve individual attention, he said. The 34-year-old father of three who lives west of Sundre in the Bearberry area with his wife and children said he decided to run because he wanted to give the members in the constituency the op-
portunity to make a choice. The Wildrose Party has been most supportive of his nomination, he said. “All my fellow party members have been so supportive and the volunteers who helped me were great. I could not have done it without them.” MLA Joe Anglin’s has not returned an email from the Review regarding the nomination race, but Nixon said he called him personally to offer his congratulations. “He called me within minutes of the results coming out and he was really graceful. I wish him the best of luck, as well, in the future,” he said. During the campaign Anglin tried unsuccessfully to have Nixon barred from the race, and alleged he broke party rules by announcing his decision to run in the campaign before he stepped down as president of the constituency. Rimoka chairman Paul McLauchlin remained non-committal about the nomination results. “Joe is still our MLA and we will continue to work with him until an election is called. Potentially, we would look forward to working with Jason, as well,” he said. Ted Bach is the new interim president of the constituency. A new executive for the constituency will be elected at the annual general meeting slated to be held in Rimbey in mid October. A provincial election may not be called until 2016.

A day in summer It was a blue and green day in summer and the heat shimmered on cement so hot you could fry an egg on it. There were six of us crowding onto two beach towels we had laid possessively on Treena Mielke our own little square On The Other Side of sand, glaring daggers at trespassers who dared to put so much as a sandy toe on the sacred material. Four of the six beach goers were under seven-years-of age so crowding wasn’t difficult, nor did it last too long, as the lure of the lake proved too strong. Whew! It was hot. I had skipped out of work early because as everyone knows, even a bad day at the beach is better than a good day stuck inside four walls trying and failing miserably at being productive. It was a made to order go to the beach day. The child sitting beside me on the way to our destination had obviously borrowed some blue from the summer sky above for her eyes as the color matched perfectly. “You can have ice cream when we get there,” I told her as we began our journey. “I don’t want an ice cream cone,” grandma, she said rather primly. I smiled and said nothing, not bothering to explain to her that ice cream kind of goes with summer like ketchup goes with hot dogs and marshmallows with campfires. We drove along the highway and I sang to her because that’s what I do when I’m in a car and it’s moving. She looked at me like I was weird. I smile again. I am weird, but in a good way, I tell her.
The highway was a dark ribbon winding its way through yellow fields to places where people sat on beach towels and ate ice cream and wiggled their toes in the hot sand and had all the time in the world to laugh and build sand castles and dream. I was dressed inappropriately for the beach, of course, having come directly from the office, but I did not care. Once I had splashed a couple of my grandchildren, acting totally inappropriately for a grandma like I usually do, and they had splashed me back, my skirt would become bedraggled anyway, sort of like a wet dishrag. I knew this, but still I did not care. Summer! It is such a delicious season, full of so many good things, not the least of which is the unexpected sight of fireflies lighting up dark ditches, or a random cascade of wild roses, breathing a fragrance like no other into the life of summer. Summer, of course, is not like a magic wand waved by some fairly godmother that makes adult stuff go away. There is, and will always and forever be bills
to pay, lawns to mow with cranky lawnmowers, laundry to finish, meals to cook, and work, endless and relentless, stretching on to forever. And there will be not enough time in the day to get it all done, nights where much needed sleep won’t come and alarms that jolt the most peaceful dreamers back to reality. But, for all of us, summer is kind of like an unwrapped gift holding moments gone in a flash but remembered for a lifetime. My daughter and I and our parcel of kids troop into the ice cream store. And the child who has somehow captured the blue of the summer sky for her eyes looked at me earnestly and said “strawberry, grandma, I want a strawberry ice cream cone.” I smile. Without knowing it, she did it. She gave me a memory. I put the memory away, but no doubt, I will bring it out in winter, when summer, once again, seems only a fantasy, far away and illusive. “I think I’ll have strawberry, too,” I say. And it is good!

Community kitchen cooking By Treena Mielke Cooking is about to take on a new dimension in Rimbey thanks to the revitalization of the Community Kitchen. The Community Kitchen, a program which runs under the umbrella of FCSS, will begin this month. Co-ordinator Vroni Lenherr has some great ideas for making the project exciting, fun and economical. A community kitchen consists of
a small group of people pooling their knowledge, skills, energy and money together to make nutritious meals for their families. Cooking happens in a supportive, fun atmosphere where participants learn to cook nutritious meals for their families. Once they have completed their cooking assignments, they take the prepared food home to share with their families. Continued on page 6

Community kitchen to begin later this month Continued from page 5 Lenherr is anxious to find out what the needs are in the community regarding the community kitchen. She is willing to work with groups who have special needs, groups who simply wish to create nutritious meals for their families and groups who are interested in cooking for special occassions or trying their hand at speciality items. She is also willing to work with seniors who need a little encouragement to get motivated to cook for themselves. The plan for the afternoon of July 25 which is when the first community kitchen
is scheduled to be held is to learn and create marinates and also learn more about barbecuing. The community kitchen will be held in the kitchen located in the Provincial Building. Interested participants may register by calling FCSS at 403-8432030. Food safety and hygene and buying economical and nutritious items will be discussed as part of the community kitchen agenda. “I want to co-ordinate it (the kitchen) for every need there is,” said Lenherr. Peggy Makofka, executive director
for FCSS in Rimbey said the community kitchen will partner with the Farmer’s Market and food items donated from vendors will be used to make pickles or jams, depending on what foods are donated. Donations of pickling jars with lids would be appreciated as well as canners and aprons. There is no charge to participate in the community kitchen. The cost of the ingredients will be divided among the participants. Makofka noted the $250 donated by Victim Services to the community kitchen project was very much appreciated.

After a year and a half of fundraising, 18 members of the 65 Ponoka Squadron of Royal Canadian Air Cadets traveled to Juno Beach last month to celebrate the 70th anniversary of D-day. For Grace Durand, chairman of the parent’s committee for the Ponoka squadron the trip was a wonderful experience. “The kids will remember it for years,” she said. “It was cool to watch the kids talking to the veterans. I would certainly recommend it for any youngster.” Durand, whose grandfather served in World War 11, said she found the experience to be educational and enjoyable. drugs were seized. Police arrested a 30-year-old man, a resident of Bentley, after they seized over 1 pound of marihuana bud, methamphetamine and ecstasy from the residence. The accused has been charged with multiple counts, including drug possession as well as weapon offences. Police will continue to pursue those involved in the illegal drug trade and will utilize all available resources to do so in an effort to make our communities safer. Thief with a conscience Police are investigating a matter that would make any person say, “whhaaaat?” A man in a local gas station left his wallet on the counter while he was making a purchase. Another man in line reached over and picked up his wallet while the store clerk watched in disbelief. The thief then handed the wallet to his buddy in line and they left the store. After the two bandits left the store, the clerk then told the victim that

the two men just left with his wallet. Unbelievably, the thief then must have felt bad and turned in the now empty wallet at a hotel in Red Deer explaining to the clerk that he had just found it in the elevator. What the thief didn’t realize is that he is on video surveillance in both places which has been turned over to police. Officers have identified the thief with a conscience and charges are pending as police track him down this week. Sexual assault Mounties charged a local 25-year-old man with two counts of sexual assault following an ongoing investigation. The accused appeared in court on Friday and has been released on bail pending his future court date in August. Fine for no insurance Several folks have found out the hard way that it is far cheaper in the long run to have proper insurance on their motor vehicles rather then risk being nabbed on the road without it. A local man was convicted by the Judge on Friday for a ticket he received for having no insurance on his pick-up truck. He was handed an $8,000 fine. That makes most insurance quotes seem pretty reasonable. Remember to always have your valid “pink slip” with you at all times in case an officer requests to see it. If you have any information regarding these or any other crimes, please call the local Rimbey RCMP Detachment at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers: PHONE: 1-800-222-8477 #8477 on Telus Mobility *8477 on Rogers AT&T Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work! Miss Teenage Central Alberta to compete in the national pageant By Treena Mielke Miss Teenage Central Alberta is vying for the title of Miss Teenage Canada and will travel to Toronto to compete in the pageant later this month. Anna Buchanan, 17, from Lacombe is gearing up for the challenge. “I am beyond excited to be heading to Toronto as an ambassador for Alberta to compete for the title of Miss Teenage Canada,” she said. The young contestant is a firm believer in the importance of finding one’s inside beauty and being the best one can be from the inside out. “I want to continue to promote my platform by helping others to realize that there isn’t just one definition of beauty. I believe that living a balanced lifestyle allows individuals to aspire for Miss Teenage Central Alberta, Anna Buchan- greatness and achieve their dreams and goals. an to compete for Miss Teenage Canada. Councillor Einar Olsen steps down Continued from page 1 The announcement of funding for the seniors’ lodge, the paving of Main Street and plans for the skateboard park to be built were highlights for Olsen. Mayor Rick Pankiw said Olsen’s resignation was effective as of July 9. He said he would have to talk the matter over carefully with his wife, if he should decide to enter the political scene again. He said he has enjoyed working with Olsen on council and Einar Olsen found him to be a team player who took his role seriously. He is hopeful more young candidates will come forward to run. “I found Einar to be well prepared and knowledgeable. I wish him and his wife and daughter well.” Pankiw said he is expecting a byelection to be held the first week of October.

I love you Mom How Can I Say Good-bye June 25, 1935 - July 18, 2004 Mom it’s been 10 years since God and His Angels called you away. Oh how the Angels rejoiced as you walked through those Pearly Gates that day! Mom when they said that you had died I refused to believe it could be true.. How could I allow myself to even Imagine saying good-bye to you. Mom you were an Angel here on earth I learned so very much from you You were so gentle and so kind Your smile would always see me through. You taught me how to love unconditionally And how to be my very best in all I do. You gave your all to God and your family Never once stopping to think about you. You were more than a Mother, You were my best friend and a great listener too. Oh how I miss our special talks, and all the fun things we used to do. Mom I can never say good-bye to you Because I could never bear the pain. Instead I say I love you Mom Until we meet again. A tribute to my Mom, Jessie Schumaker Love from your Daughter, Brenda Cipperley.
To Mom Schumaker If Heaven wasn’t so far away I’d come up to mention, I’m your favorite son-in-law still today. Love Virgil Cipperley
To Grandma Schumaker If Heaven wasn’t so far away I’d bring my daughter Rylan up to play. Love from your Grandson Corey Cipperley and family
To Grandma Schumaker If Heaven wasn’t so far away I’d take Grandma with me to haul a load of hay. Love from your Grandson Steven Cipperley

POTRATZ Waldemar (Wally) It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Waldemar Potratz of Rimbey, Alberta, formerly of Edmonton, Alberta, after a lengthy illness at the Rimbey Hospital on July 9, 2014. He would have turned 84 on October 20th. Waldemar will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his beloved wife of 65 years Eleonore Potratz, his daughter Gabriela (Ken) Petersen, and much loved grandchildren, Amy Petersen and Kim (Lyle) Beierbach and their children - cherished great grandchildren - Keelie and Kessler Beierbach, all of Rimbey, Alberta, as well as family in Germany. Waldemar was predeceased by two daughters Angelika Potratz and Jane Fancey. Waldemar and Eleonore immigrated to Canada in September 1954 speaking very little English. They first resided in Leduc before moving to Edmonton. Wally had a number of jobs before he became employed with STELCO where he was a crane operator until his retirement. Wally had a love for woodworking and cement work and gardening. He was never happier than when he could be doing something with his family, who were always first with him, and in his later years loved watching his great grandchildren play hockey, it was one of his most treasured times. With respect for Wally’s wishes no formal funeral service will be held. His ashes will be intered with his daughters’ ashes at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Edmonton, Alberta. A very special thank you to all the staff at Rimbey Hospital, who not only looked after Wally but always had such kind words for the family when we visited, you are all truly amazing. Thank you also to Rimbey FCSS who made this last while easier to cope. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Wally’s name may be made directly to the Rimbey Hospital or to Rimbey FCSS. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.wilsonsfuneralchapel.ca WILSON’S FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM serving Central Alberta with locations in Rimbey and Lacombe in charge of the arrangements. TORKELSON September 4, 1958 ~ July 8, 2014
Robin “Torky” G. Torkelson of Winfield, Alberta passed away peacefully, following a brief, but courageous battle with cancer, at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at the age of 55 years. He was a fighter and fought until the end. Robin was born in Bengough, Saskatchewan on September 4, 1958. He was a kind and generous person, and didn’t want to hurt anyone with the battle he was fighting, often saying “everything will be ok.” Robin has left many broken hearts, but also many happy memories ... and the memories are what he would want everyone to cherish. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him. Robin leaves to mourn his passing, his loving partner, Sandy Walker; his five children: Myla (Darren), Jesse (Tiffany), Cody (Melissa), Kyle, and Colt; four stepchildren: Jennifer (Alton), Chrissy (Bill), Patrick (Kelsey), and Morgan (Marie); as well as sixteen grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Mavis; one sister, Bunny (Rod); his mother-in-law, Dorothy (Les); and his brotherin-law, Brent (Tracy); in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many treasured friends. Robin was predeceased by his father, Glen Torkelson. A Public Graveside Service in Honour of Robin’s Life was held at the Mount Clare Cemetery, Winfield on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Gooderham officiating. A time of fellowship and luncheon refreshments followed in the Winfield Community Centre, Winfield. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Robin’s Memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. Condolences to the Family may also be expressed by email to: special_reflections@telusplanet.net Burial Arrangements for the Late Robin “Torky” G.
