Hot weather sets temperature records By TamaRa Cunningham ThE NEwS BULLETiN

Slather on that sunscreen Nanaimo – sweltering temperatures are expected to stick around this week. E n v i ro n m e n t C a n a d a reports the heat wave will continue this week, with temperatures reaching a high of 32 C today. By the weekend, the mercury will cool to 25 C, but the dry weather remains a concern for the B.C. Coastal Fire Centre which is urging people to take precautions to prevent forest fires and report any sightings of smoke. Nanaimo has seen less rain and higher tempera-

tures since the beginning of May and is expected to see above-normal temperatures into September, according to David Phillips, Environment Canada’s senior climatologist. Between May 1 and July 6, there were 60 millimetres of precipitation compared to 132 mm over the same time last year. There were also 23 days of rain compared to the normal 30. “You have to be pinching yourself. This is almost Shangri-La. Its quite spectacular,” Phillips said, adding it would be hard not to give the summer a ‘perfect 10’ rating thanks to the balance of heat and rain and lack of

severe weather. “There’s not the violent and life-threatening weather you are seeing in other parts of the country with lightning strikes and with hail and with tornadoes and hurricanes ... this is about as good as you get.” Nanaimo’s streak of hot weather has boosted the fire rating to high for the region. The B.C. Coastal Fire Centre has not issued campfire restrictions but is asking people to be careful with any forest activities, such as avoiding use of all terrain vehicles on grass. To report forest fires, please call 1-800663-5555. news@nanaimobulletin.com

City staff members are recommending an $8.1-million fix for the Colliery dams, despite concerns the measure is too intrusive. Last week, the City of Nanaimo released options and cost estimates for the Colliery dams, as well as information on the decision-making process and next steps. The information comes after an eight-month and estimated $1.35-million process by the city’s technical committee to find solutions for the century-old dams and days after the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society announced its withdrawal from the group over disagreements on mitigation options. According to the report, two measures are recommended by an engineer to address flood risk at the lower dam: ‘overtopping’ for $7.2 million or increasing the size of the spillway for $8.1 million. Engineers advise that doing nothing to the structures isn’t an option and a third solution – an alternative overtopping proposed by the preservation society’s own engineer – has not been considered because it lacks designs and costs, according to Toby Seward, the city’s director of social and protective services. While the preservation society isn’t keen on the cost of the city’s

overtopping solution, it also says it’s the most suitable for the park. It would involve cutting out several meters of soil on the embankment of the lower dam and mixing it with concrete to create a surface that would prevent erosion should water flow over the top. Deepening and widening the spillway is a “monstrous intrusion” and destructive, says society spokesman Jeff Solomon, who explains it would reduce water levels to “two small little puddles,” hurt living organisms and see the temporary closure of the park. However, the city’s recent report shows an executive committee of Snuneymuxw and senior city staff – a step above the technical committee in the decision-making chain – plans to recommend Nanaimo move ahead with spillway work. Seward said the option is straight-forward and provides a long-term, relatively maintenancefree solution whereas overtopping involves uncertainties around soil conditions and process. “Yes, there will be disruption and the lower lake will be drawn down by approximately three meters, but it will in no means be a puddle,” he said, adding both options would be intrusive and involve temporary park closures. “In both cases the hope is, or the plan is, to keep the middle dam and the reservoir there in use during this period.” Work and research to address the Colliery dams has been ongoing since 2012 and has cost taxpayers an estimated $2.35 million. Nanaimo couple killed in gravel-truck crash on Alberta highway A crash between a gravel truck and car in Wetaskiwin, Alta, has claimed the lives of a Nanaimo couple. The collision happened shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Highway 13 and 47th Street in north Wetaskiwin.

Cpl. Kevin Krebs of the Wetaskiwin RCMP said investigators believe the westbound gravel truck and trailer rig turned left in front of the couple’s eastbound Chrysler Intrepid and that the driver of the car tried, but was unable, to avoid the crash.

The man, 65, and woman, 63, were trapped inside their heavily damaged car. Wetaskiwin Fire Services used the Jaws of Life to extricate the victims who did not survive the injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the gravel truck was uninjured, but was

extremely distraught and was treated at the scene by paramedics. Alcohol, speed and weather have been ruled out as factors leading up to the crash. “As far as I know, no charges have been laid on the driver of the semi,” said Sgt. Guy Per-

reault of the Wetaskiwin RCMP. “I’m not even sure if any are contemplated due to the circumstances.” The RCMP are waiting for permission from the family before releasing the names of the victims. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo Mounties are asking the public to help them track down two suspects who assaulted and robbed someone Sunday. The incident happened just after midnight in the pedestrian tunnel that crosses the Island Highway near the Morden Road intersection in South Wellington. The victim, 34, told police he was walking through the tunnel when two men approached him and asked him for a smoke. When he declined he was punched repeatedly until he fell to the ground where he was kneed several times. The victim fought back and managed to stop the attack, but the suspects were still able to make off with all the money in his wallet. The victim suffered two black eyes, swollen nose and a concussion. One suspect is described as aboriginal, 35-40 years old, balding and weighed about 270 pounds. He wore a Fubu hoodie and white shorts. The second suspect is also described as aboriginal and 35-40, but with a thin build and long hair. He wore a black shirt and black pants and might have been carrying bear spray. “Investigators believe the males responsible for this brutal assault most likely reside in the area,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. Anyone with info is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 or visit www.nanaimocrime stoppers.com.

Car share program expanding

A new development and transportation master plan could fuel growth of Nanaimo CarShare, according to a member of the cooperative. Nanaimo’s car sharing not-for -profit has new deals in the works to expand its presence, from roaming agreements to the addition of vehicles to its fleet. It’s also been included as part of the new Transportation Master Plan, which calls for the city to continue to support car share programs as a transportation option for residents. The latest developments have Ian Gartshore, a member of the cooperative’s board of directors, believing it’s only a matter of time before more people use the service and the organization takes off. “Really it’s in its infancy,” Gartshore said of the car share. “When it takes off like [car-share in] Victoria and ... like Vancouver have taken off you will see lots of cars everywhere.” The Nanaimo CarShare started in 2010, with 10 members sharing one vehicle. Four years later it has two cars, an estimated 40 users and plans for expansion. The organization allows members to self-book vehicles in the Harbour City. New roaming agreements could put them behind the wheel of vehicles in Victoria and the Sunshine Coast. A hospital-area developer also plans to purchase two new cars for the fleet. Currently shared cars are only available in the downtown core. “It’s been slow and now suddenly yes, we were actually mentioned in the official city transportation plan and we have been working very hard with all kinds of shareholders, of interested parties to see how we can all save money and become more sustainable in the city,” Gartshore said. Dogs better left at home on hot days

The recent heat wave has led to an increase in calls from the public who see animals, usually dogs, left unattended in parked vehicles. Before calling the police or animal control, police suggest the following checklist to determine the animal is safe or at risk. Is the car parked in the sun or shade? Are the windows down and does the animal have air flow? How long have you observed the animal? Does it have any water? Have you gone into nearby stores and tried to locate the owner or driver? What is the dog doing? Is panting, laying down, barking? If an animal is panting, shaking uncontrollably, lethargic or appears to be unco-

NEighBouRhooD WoRRiED over seeing prostitution, needles. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

The City of Nanaimo is recommending environmental design to combat drug and sex trade problems in a Nob Hill-area neighbourhood. Concerned residents near Nicol Street, who have complained about drug use, needles, and prostitutes and clients frequenting their alley, held a walkthrough with city staff Saturday. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design was discussed as a potential solution, something suggested in a 2005 city-commissioned report and used in city parks and building design. Fences, such as chain link, and trimmed grass and foliage are encouraged, as they open sight lines and provide less cover for drug abusers to hide and discard paraphernalia and for prostitutes and customers to do business. John Horn, City of Nanaimo social planner, was on-hand and said neighbourhoods that work together are strong and are able to deter and diminish the illegal occurrences. “If you walk down the alley and you believe everyone in the alley has a lot of capability and they’re acting in a guardian capacity, then that sends the signal that this is not the place to conduct illicit activity ... that’s the signal

that has to be sent and that’s what changes things,” Horn said. Resident Sara Barton is already utilizing environmental design elements and said the lane – now nicknamed Wisteria Lane after plants in her yard – used to be scary. While there are still some issues, she said residents are working together to take it back. “Myself personally, I’ve extended my fence in the backyard, shut it down,” Barton said. “I used to have a lot of walkthrough traffic going to 7-Eleven and such through my yard. I planted bushes in the front. It just pretties it up and steers people away in a nice, peaceful way.” There are less people hanging out in her back alley, she said adding, it is a good neighbourhood with a lot of good people. Tanya Hiltz, another concerned resident and one of those spearheading the action, echoed Barton’s sentiments. “We’re going for lines, so right now you turn around and look down the laneway and you can see where the blind spots are,” Hiltz said. “We’ll work with [Horn] and clean them up. [We’ll put] peepholes, if we can, in the fences, continuously cutting the grass, planting some wisteria ... just bring the lane back because it’s been let go too long.”

Society wants time to weigh options

all. The preservation society spokesman also believes the option to expand the spillway is extremely excessive and inappropriate. “It’s incredible that they would even consider doing this at this stage,” Solomon said. “Literally for most of the year we have a couple of inches of water in the spillway. That’s it. They want to make it 10 or 11 feet deeper than it is now and much, much wider.” Solomon wants to see accurate information given to the public and politicians and see the public given time to weigh options. “There is no urgency, nothing should happen right now,” he said. Nanaimo city council received a report recommending they ask staff to release minutes from the technical committee, schedule a public information session and report on next steps and options for funding at a future meeting. A decision was made after press time Monday.

Last year Nanaimo city council struck a technical committee as part of a two-year mitigation process to look at remediation of the middle and lower Colliery dams and re-examine the structures’ hazard rating. The committee has commissioned work that’s led the B.C. Dam Safety Branch to scale back its hazard ratings for the dams and has reduced remediation estimates from original costs of $17 million and $30.7 million. However, the committee has acknowledged it has not been able to reach consensus on what options to pursue on the dams and parties don’t agree on how soon they need to fix the dams. While S e w a rd b e l i e v e s there is a need to take action as soon as possible over heavy rainfall concerns, Solomon says there’s no urgency at

Riders test endurance limits

I

By Chris Bush The News bulleTiN

A strong cyclist can ride 100 kilometres in about four hours. More than 50 riders from across Canada, the U.S. and as far away as Japan will ride 1,200 km across Vancouver Island in fewer than 90 hours in the VanIsle 1200, a cycling marathon being hosted by the B.C. Randonneurs Cycling Club July 14-17 that starts in Victoria, follows a course to Gold River, then up to Port Hardy and back down the Island. A randonnee or brevet is similar to a car rally, but on bicycles. Riders must cover given sections of a long-distance course within a specified time limit. Riders must hit check points within time limits. “Generally speaking there are no designated sleep stops and I know

there are a couple of guys in Victoria who are trying to go straight through,” said Mike Croy, event organizers. “One guy [Craig Lylack of Sooke] in particular is shooting for under 50 hours. Knowing him and how he’s done all the rides leading up to it is potentially quite possible. Ken Bonner [of Victoria] – he actually invented this ride eight years ago – he’s 72 and he’s probably going to go straight through.” Bonner, nicknamed Iron Butt, has ridden more than 300,000 event kilometres in his lifetime, Croy said. The Van Isle 1200 course with its altitude changes – riders will climb more than 10,000 metres – will challenge even the toughest most seasoned riders. “Some of the hills to Gold River make the Malahat look pretty small,” said Graham Fishlock, of Ladysmith. Since June 2012 Nanaimo Mounties have handed out more than 3,000 tickets to youth, caught red-handed doing something positive in their community. The RCMP and the city have partnered up to give free access to pools, rinks and recreation centres to youth who have been ticketed by police for good deeds. “This is exactly where we want our youth to be, engaging in fun physical activities with other like-minded youth,” said Const. Mat Watkin of the Nanaimo RCMP Bike Patrol Unit, who spearheaded the program. Getting caught picking up a piece of garbage, holding a door for an elderly person or driving with care and attention, are just some of the ways young can get ticketed.

B.C. SUMMER GAMES will bring thousands of travellers through city.

With B.C. Summer Games’ participants set to descend on Nanaimo this week, B.C. Ferries is advising Harbour City customers to expect heavy traffic at the Games’ conclusion. The Games run from Thursday (July 17) until Sunday and the 4:40, 5:20 and 7:30 p.m. sailings from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay on Sunday and the 5:45 p.m. Sunday sailing from Duke Point to Tsawwassen will see larger-than-usual traffic, according to a B.C. Ferries release. B.C. Ferries also advises that people planning to depart Sunday take advantage of its res-

The whole world has come down with soccer fever, and some of that enthusiasm filled Nanaimo sports fields last week. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC visited for the annual Hope and Health event in the city, with motivational talks on Tuesday night at the Port Theatre followed by soccer skills clinics Wednesday at Merle Logan Field. Many high-profile ’Caps were in town, including coach Carl Robinson and players Darren Mattocks, Kekuta Manneh, Gershon Koffie, Steven Beitashour and others. “Being a professional athlete, it’s what gives us enjoyment – the fans, the kids, so it’s always great to give back,” Beitashour said. The defender has an especially inspiring story now, as he just returned from the World Cup in Brazil where he was a member of the Iranian national team. “The World Cup, that’s as big as it gets and I always dreamed about that and for it to come true, it was unbelievable,” he

Sunday travellers without reservation are asked to consider taking ferries before 3 p.m. or after 7:30 p.m. and an extra ferry will depart from Departure Bay at 9:05 p.m. Sunday, affording another sailing option. Foot passengers are recommended to consider another sailing, as the aforementioned are expected to reach capacity. Approximately 2,000 of the Games’ 3,200 participants are expected to travel by ferry. For information on ferry schedules, please go to www.bcferries. com. Motorists are being advised that there will of traffic restrictions along Third Street during the opening ceremonies Thursday evening and the closing ceremonies Sunday afternoon.

said. “I’ll remember every little detail about it. The whole experience, mostly the fans.” Beitashour didn’t see game action, so he’ll remain motivated. “You don’t want to just settle. The World Cup’s a great achievement to be part of, but my goal is to go play…,” he said. “I’ll always increase the

level of the goal and if I ever achieve it, I’ll make a new one.” It’s the sort of message that is central to Hope and Health. The Whitecaps want to inspire youths, if not to make it to the World Cup, then just to play. “I think every kid should start off playing soccer…” Beitashour said. “[It’s] great for teamwork,

you have camaraderie with the other kids and it’s just a fun, fun game to play.” The event was presented by Kw’umut Lelum child and family services and Smun’eem aboriginal child and family service agency. This was the third annual Hope and Health event in Nanaimo. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Lantzville taps into community investment fund New provincial funding will provide relief for Lantzville taxpayers. The B.C. government recently announced the District of Lantzville will get close to $290,000 from the province’s Strategic Community Investment Fund. Parksville and Qualicum will also see funding, including small community grants and

traffic fine sharing revenue totaling more than $599,000. The dollars are part of almost $74 million distributed to B.C. communities as an additional revenue source, and helps cover costs of policing to new equipment, infrastructure and increased community safety initiatives. In Lantzville, the community investment funds are “used

to keep tax rate increases to a minimum. We intend to do the same for 2014,” wrote Twyla Graff, the district’s chief administrative officer in an e-mail. The district received a small community grant under the investment fund, which is available to municipalities with populations of up to 19,000 residents.

We can share medal moments The Games are good to go. A lot of hard work and planning has been done for the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo and there is still more to do, but many of us can simply sit back now and watch. We hope that people do just that – get out and fill the stands this week (July 17-20) and cheer on the youths as they go for gold. With 19 different sports at 27 different venues, there are bound to be events that interest us. One of the characteristics of the B.C. Games is the variety and scope. This event isn’t just a soccer tournament, it’s not just a track meet, it’s both those things, and much more, too. The Games present a totally different kind of fan experience. There will be sports this week that we don’t often see contested in Nanaimo – competitive beach volleyball, river kayaking, inline hockey, triathlon and wrestling, to name a few. Or for those who might prefer spectacle to sport, there will be opening and closing ceremonies with more of an arts-and-entertainment focus. The youths will notice and appreciate the claps and cheers and the hooting and hollering. Part of the appeal of qualifying for the B.C. Summer Games is the chance to try to achieve on a grand stage. It’s a big deal for them to make it this far and it will be a big deal for them to medal, and if we, the fans, treat it as such, then this week will be even more special for these kids. These athletes are good at what they do. They win a lot of games and titles and collect a lot of ribbons, medals and trophies. We want the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo to be more than just another tournament. We want these youths to have an awesome experience and make memories at these Games in our city. Hundreds of medals will be handed out and there will be hundreds of opportunities to see great games, unexpected outcomes, fierce competition, victory, defeat, sportsmanship, gold-medal moments. And we can share in it, just by being there. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

I was too young to remember Fleury’s glory days with the Flames, but I was old enough to watch his fall from grace in the public spotlight. I remember thinking ‘This guy doesn’t care about the game. He’s just another spoiled NHLer who makes millions of dollars and has lost touch with his roots.’ Some will argue that athletes deserve the treatment when they’re making the millions of dollars they make. As a sports fan I am all for heckling poor play. To me, that is part of the game. However, to criticize an athlete for being an alcoholic or having a drug addiction without understanding their story is wrong. When I look back at Fleury’s fall from grace, I realize that this was a man who was able to play hockey at an extremely high level for years, while enduring a personal nightmare every single night. Based on Fleury’s experiences, I can’t say I wouldn’t have gone the same route as him. How am I to say I wouldn’t have done the things he did? Fleury’s speaking engagement in Nanaimo came on my 25th birthday. After the event was finished I ran into Fleury outside of the theatre, where he was standing with no one around him. I went up and thanked him, not just for sharing his story, but also for inspiring me. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Council made bad situation even worse To the Editor,

Re: Council rescinds motion to ban event, July 8. In case you thought it couldn’t get any worse than eight out of nine council members being totally ignorant of the fundamental principles of the Canadian constitution, you were wrong. In an inept effort to reverse their attack on free speech by arbitrarily banning a conference, no doubt using their apparent ESP powers to invoke pre-emptive censorship, council made an awful situation even worse. After repealing the ill-conceived motion, instead of agreeing to the proposed independent investigation, council refused to disclose how much all this mess has cost the innocent taxpayers. The mayor stated, “Council could not release the information due to a non-disclosure agreement.” Absolute poppycock. The taxpayers are stuck with paying for all this and are entitled to know the full extent of their financial bailout. Gary Korpan Nanaimo

Re: Parking plan targets downtown parkades, July 3. It is an acknowledged fact that governments of all level generate no money, but collect from those who do generate money. The city is suddenly slavering over the possibility of taxing another $875,000 a year from taxpayers by amending the downtown parking system. Nanaimo may not have the best system, but with some adjustments it is a working system, and does not require a $875,000 overhaul. Envision a shopper coming downtown, paying $875,000 to park, then finding no money to shop. Is not money better in the tills of the merchants than in city coffers?

Re: Meter parking makes cents, Editorial, July 8. In this nickel-anddiming city, I get a kick out of you people who keep telling me I won’t miss 50 cents here, a dollar there. Re: Council rescinds motion to ban event, July 8. How is it possible that our tax money can be paid out, in this latest case, to an organization, and we are not allowed to know how much the amount is? It seems that more and more, Nanaimo and its councillors feel that our cash is theirs alone, and that they can do whatever they like with it. I have started to imagine city employees and councillors dancing around a cauldron full of taxpayers’ cash, asking, “where can we toss this money to, so that a few people will love us?” Never mind the rest of us suckers.

Animal abusers should be taxed Re: Let SPCA build its own shelter, Editorial, June 26. I have to assume you want to start a letter writing campaign as a result of such a misinformed, sarcastic and condescending editorial. The SPCA cannot keep up with the number of abused and abandoned animals coming into care on a daily basis. Without the support of vets, technicians, foster homes, volunteer help at shelters, donations of toys, blankets and last but by no means least money, there is no way the SPCA could function. We’re not going to get donations from the perpetrators of these horrendous crimes against animals, so let’s get to them through their tax dollar.

the case. I am proud to belong to the United Church, which in 1988 decided that a person’s sexual orientation was not a relevant issue in deciding their suitability for ministry or membership in the United Church. This was not an easy decision and was only arrived at after much study, debate and prayer; a number of people left the United Church because of that decision and not all United Church members support it today. It is based on our belief in justice rather than a legalistic interpretation of scripture. I grew up in and around Nanaimo in the ’40s and so was thoroughly indoctrinated in the crude homophobia of the day. We all need to outgrow racism, sexism and homophobia and it took me some time to grow out of this. Today, of course, that kind of discrimination has a nice religious veneer and LGBT people can be targeted under the name of religious freedom. But let’s not confuse it with Christianity.

Poets descend on Nanaimo More than 20 poets showcase their work at the Globe Hotel as part of a poetry book launch

Renowned poet and author Patrick Lane is one of more than 20 poets who will take over the Globe Hotel tomorrow night.

ine words will be spoken tomorrow night when dozens of poets convene at a local venue. On July 16 (Wednesday) more than 20 poets including Governor General Awardwinner Patrick Lane will be sharing their work at the Globe Hotel as part of a poetry chapbook launch party. The free event, which will last for two hours, features 22 poets inculding Mary Nelson, Heidi Garnett, Chelsea Comeau, Ann Graham Walker, Liz McNally, Pat Smekal, Tina Biello and David Fraser.

“You’re going to listen to Patrick’s words and what he writes about,” Fraser said about the event. “You’ll listen to his work, which is always thrilling to listen to. Then Liz (McNally) will be hosting it and she will be calling up poets one at a time to perform their work.” Poets will be reading some of their work from new chapbooks, which were created during two poetry retreats to Honeymoon Bay in Cowichan Valley. “Basically it’s reading of poems from two chapbooks that are published by Leaf Press,” Fraser explained. “The poems come out of two

■ Hypnotherapist

People often assume that self-esteem and self- TRACY L. THOMPSON confidence are one and the same things. But a person might be confident in their abilities and talents but yet still have low self-esteem; the two concepts are related but yet different. For example, people suffering from a lack of self-esteem will usually find it difficult to answer ‘yes’ to questions such as, ‘do I like myself’ or ‘do I deserve to be happy’? Because of this negative belief it prevents them from achieving the best in their life. The funny thing is though, when you change this belief into loving yourself, your self-esteem improves, which then of course makes you more confident. And then when you are more confident in different areas of your life, you begin to increase your overall sense of self-esteem. So ultimately, you can work on improving both issues at the same time. By using hypnotherapy we help by using positive imagery and have the person focus mainly on those things that he or she is most confident in and then change any negative self-talk into positive thoughts and images thus improving both self-esteem and confidence in all areas of life such as relationships, career, socially, and state of mind.

How can I stop a wage garnishment?

Aside from settling with the creditor or paying off the debt, there are two GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP methods under the Bankruptcy & Insolvency Act to have a wage garnishee lifted. One is to file for bankruptcy and the other is to file a proposal to creditors. The proposal option is usually preferable if you have the ability to continue to make some reasonable payment to creditors. Once a proposal or bankruptcy is commenced all wage garnishees and wage assignments cease, even garnishees from Revenue Canada. The only type of garnishee which continues is a garnishee for maintenance or support under the Family Maintenance Enforcement Program. Since this type of debt survives a bankruptcy, the garnishee is not released in respect of post bankruptcy earnings.

Most headaches are cervicogenic, which means they are caused by improper joint DR. KAREN MATTERN and muscle movement in the neck, and the majority of headaches can be reduced in frequency or eliminated altogether with chiropractic treatment. Even migraines, which can have a variety of causes, can become less intense and less frequent with chiropractic treatment because lack of proper movement of the joints in the neck is often the factor that puts the body over the threshold for a migraine attack. If you suffer from headaches, consider looking into chiropractic treatment for long-term relief without the need for medication. Your family chiropractor can determine if there is a mechanical basis for your headaches and the best course of treatment for them.

Why do green smoothies rule? Green smoothies pack a supercharged one-two punch, boosting brain power and detoxing your body at the same time. They’re an excellent source of probiotics, omegas, fibre, protein and vitamins. TONI JEFFRIES This Power House Detox Smoothie is great for the whole family, sweet enough for kids’ palates. Drink it for breakfast when your body absorbs the most nutrients. The spinach is high in calcium to strengthen bones. (For greens with the greatest health benefits, hit your local market.) Recent studies note Hemp seeds or hemp oil are rich in Omega-3, 6 and 9, fueling your brain, reducing inflammation and the risk for chronic disease. The latest research suggests ginger and cilantro aid in digestion and are both chelation agents, removing heavy metal toxins from your body that can cause neurologic disorders like Alzheimer’s, M.S. and Parkinson’s. Supercharge this smoothie with superfoods, spirulina and wheatgrass. How can I make sure advertising will work for my company? Message: The essential first step in advertising is to figure out what message to send to your customers. Advertising is simply a way to send a message based on your marketing plan and sound business strategy. Repetition: An advertising campaign is a planned appeal to the client’s potential customers, using the power of repetition. The power of repetition reinforces the advertisers message. Consistency equates with familiarity, familiarity equates with confidence and confidence equates with sales.

notary It has always been my understanding that any assets I hold jointly with my husband would go to him when I die. A TIAH M. WORKMAN few months ago, you printed a column that said if there was a plane crash and no way of determining who died last “each member of a couple who die together will be presumed to survive the other so both Wills would be followed”. What happens to joint assets in that scenario?

Under the Wills, Estates and Succession Act, the joint ownership is severed and your estates would each own 50% of each previously held joint asset outright.

naturopathic My 2 year old son has a dairy allergy. How can he get the calcium he needs without consuming dairy products?

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of calcium for ages 1-3 is 700 mg. It’s really not that difficult to get the required calcium from food alone, without taking supplements. Calcium rich food sources include canned salmon and sardines (with bones), tofu and green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, kale, bok choy, cabbage, mustard and turnip greens. Many processed food manufacturers add calcium to packaged foods including non-dairy milks, fruit juices, grain-based cereals, and other products. However, you are better off getting your calcium from natural, whole food sources because they provide the nutrients that enhance your body’s ability to utilize calcium, such as Vitamin D. Keep in mind that even foods not super high in calcium such as grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and vegetables will still contribute to the overall intake. Try introducing some of these calcium rich foods to your child in a green smoothie containing different combinations of greens, non-dairy milk, silken tofu, fruit and 1 tbsp of a nut or seed butter. Naturopathic consults are covered by most extended health care plans.

When choosing an electrician the BEN MAZZEI first thing to consider is whether they are licensed. You can confirm this by contacting the BC Safety Authority. A license guarantees that the company had taken the necessary courses and have the practical experience to complete the job. You should also request an up to date WCB clearance letter and confirm they carry all the necessary insurances. It is always a good idea to request references and confirm they have experience in the field of work you require.

Experts’ Advice If it’s done correctly, a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) or The Free Home Evaluation TIM WAIT can be the next best thing to an appraisal in approximating the value of a property. The purpose of the CMA is to analyze data from properties similar to the subject property that has sold recently in order to project the realistic price at which the subject property would sell. I’m not an appraiser, but what I’ve always done is make upward and downward adjustments to the projected value of the subject property based on features and characteristics of the comparables I use. Some are based on “gut” feelings while other adjustments come about through rules of thumb I have developed from experience. Putting a value on real estate is an inexact science at best, and this methodology has worked pretty well for me over the years. I use a completely different method for projecting the value of land and property with residential development potential. How can you tell if the CMA you’ve been given is worth more than the piece of paper it’s written on? Call me at 713-1223 or email tim@timwait.com and I will let you know.

This is a great question! Not all latex is created equal. The biggest problem is that some retailers will say “this contains 100% natural latex”. A better statement would have been “40% of this mattress is 100% natural latex”. Synthetic latex (a blend of latex and Polyol) is a very large percentage of the industry. And remember if you can’t flip it you wasted your money. 1707 Bowen Rd., Nanaimo

The flexible partial is a removable partial that many people find very comfortable. TED CARSON These lightweight partials are practically invisible and completely eliminate the need for metal clasps and a metal framework. They are strong and very thin and are made to snap securely and comfortably into place. Many factors help the denturist to determine the type and style of partial best suited to each individual. There are many various designs. A partial denture provides support to help keep your natural teeth in position and prevent them from shifting. With a partial denture filling in the gaps of the missing teeth, you are sure to look good, speak better and eat well. For many people with missing natural teeth, it takes 17 muscles and a well-fitting partial to smile again. For further information contact Carson Denture Clinic for a free consultation.

granite When having granite countertops installed, does it really matter where the seams are located? Seams are inevitable in most cases, and where they are located is very important. They should be placed in a location that reduces their visibility, where there is enough cabinet support, and never in a sink cut out. While this is a popular location with most granite companies (as it reduces the amount of material used), Infinite Granite does not place a seam there because of the minimal cabinet support, as well as being a “high traffic area.” Instead, we add support to this area by embedding steel into the underside of the granite in these narrow spans.

Thomas Colvin 1908 - 1986

Lovingly remembered by his wife Mary & his daughters Josie & Susan and their families.

Roderick James Dyck February 13, 1955 – June 28, 2014

Rod was born in Quesnel, BC on Feb 13th 1955, to Walter and Val Dyck. Rod was blessed with a sister, Janet. From a very early age and throughout his life Rod loved and excelled at sports, including hockey, baseball, golf and curling. He felt at home in the outdoors which led to much time spent camping, fishing, snowmobiling with family and friends. As a young man Rod left Quesnel to play junior hockey with the Vancouver Villas. His junior career continued with the Kamloops Chiefs, Penticton Broncos, Vernon Vikings, and the Medicine Hat Tigers. He then played for the Quesnel Kangaroos until leaving for South Africa in the summer of 1976 to play hockey there. While in South Africa, Rod was recruited to Morges, Switzerland, where he played for two seasons from 1976 -1978. It was in Switzerland that Rod met Patricia who shared his life for the next few years and remained his life-long friend. Rod returned to Europe in 1979 to play with EV Ravensburg Germany, performing as a player/coach in the latter years, until he returned to Canada for good in 1984. In 1990 Rod moved to Vancouver Island where he eventually called his beloved Bamfield home. Here he started a construction company and a building supply store. Rod was a skilled and talented carpenter, often generously sharing his wealth of knowledge. One does not have to look very far in Bamfield to see Rod’s hand. Here Rod met his partner, Kelley Bartlett and in 1996 they welcomed their daughter Erin into their lives’. The last 20 years of Rod’s life revolved around life with Kelley and Erin in Bamfield. Here he found purpose and joy in raising his daughter, and peace and tranquility in the beauty of the ocean and the rainforest. In later years he also found serenity on the golf course. Rod lived his life with humour, honesty and integrity. He was a practical, insightful man who was quietly effective in so many ways. He was strong and courageous, almost seeming invincible at times – a role model to all who knew him well. Rod was predeceased by his parents Walter and Valerie Dyck and is survived by his partner Kelley, daughter Erin, sister Janet (Jules), nephews Waylon (Brooke) and Kayle as well as great nieces Jersey and Presley. A celebration of life will be held for Rod at his residence in Coombs on July 20, 2014, at 1:30pm. Please see Rod Dyck’s Memorial facebook page for a map to the location or call (250) 937-1550 or (250) 586-4541 for directions. A bursary has been set up in Rod’s name to go towards underprivileged youth to play hockey. Donations can be sent to Rod Dyck Memorial Hockey Bursary, 480 Pachena Rd, Bamfield,BC V0R 1B0 “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

Raiders reunite for main camp

Timbermen try to stay in WLA race

I

FOOTBALL TEAM going to Alberni.

BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

The V.I. Raiders will pack up their football gear, go to main camp and try to return as a team. Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League club takes its next step toward its 10th-anniversary season this week as it strikes main camp at Port Alberni on Thursday (July 17), It will be the first Raiders main camp run by new head coach Brian Ridgeway, and he’s looking forward to it after spending the off-season general managing and handling all the off-field duties that fall on a junior football coach. “Actually getting to practise is going to be awesome because we’ll be getting into the stuff I know really well,” he said. Players have been anticipating camp for awhile now. Guys have been trickling into town lately and the throw-arounds have become more productive. “They’ve asked us to come and coach and do a little more and get a little more intensity to it, so that’s fine with us,” Ridgeway said. “But it’s still their time. We want to make sure that they have a good culture together.”

V.I. Raiders receiver Dustin Rodriguez makes a one-handed catch during a drill last Wednesday night at Merle Logan Field.

Guys haven’t gotten their playbooks yet, but coaches have been able to pass along some of their philosophies. “We’ve got a good pace going now at practice,” said Marshall Cook, Raiders receiver. “Everything feels good and it’s exciting to get into camp now and finally get pads on again and get going.” Main camp is physically challenging, but Ridgeway doesn’t want it to be overly punishing. “There’s two philosophies – you either go in hitting

and grind them down and that’s how you build them up. I don’t really agree with that,” he said. “We can still work all our stuff without turning everybody into hamburger.” Camp is five days long and three of those days will include two-a-day practices totalling four hours, plus four and a half hours of meetings. “So it’s an all-day thing and even if you’re not beating on them, it’s physically exhausting and mentally exhausting,” Ridgeway said.

Cook said the important thing is to keep the right frame of mind at main camp. “You get tired, and the big thing is staying mentally fresh and keeping your mind right and being able to hold through in that fifth day of practice when you’re body’s wearing down a little bit,” he said. Players will all have something to prove at camp. Whatever they’ve done for the Raiders in the past, they now have new coaches to impress. As the Raiders rejig,

Ridgeway said he’ll go with 18-year-olds over 22-year-olds if it’s a close call. “It shouldn’t be close,” he said. “Your veterans

should be that much better.” One more factor at main camp is the time crunch. The football season is coming sooner than later, with the Raiders opening up the B.C. Football Conference schedule on the road at Langley on July 26. “It’s not like we have three preseason games to get ready,” Ridgeway said. “So we have to be smart about how we work on that training camp weekend with regards to being fresh on [July 26] to play.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The Nanaimo Timbermen will continue to try to fight till the end this season. The city’s senior A Western Lacrosse Association team played two road games the past few days against the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Thursday and against the Coquitlam Adanacs on Saturday. On Thursday, the T-men fell 12-9 at Queen’s Park Arena. A slow start saw Nanaimo fall behind 4-0 in the first 10 minutes, and although they got three of those back before the period was out, New West scored five straight. Paul Brebber scored a hat trick and added two assists for Nanaimo and M a c g re g o r J o h n ston had a goal and three helpers. Myles Dennett, Hugh Weir, B ro d y E a s t w o o d , Mark Debrone and Cayle Ratcliff also tallied and Zak Boychuk tended goal. The Nanaimo team bounced back for Saturday’s match, downing the Coquitlam Adanacs 11-9. The T-men were down by a goal after the first period, but rallied with five goals in the second and four in the third to pull off the win. Cayle Ratcliff had four goals and five assists. GAME ON … The Timbermen host the Salmonbellies on Saturday (July 19) at 6:45 p.m. at the Island Savings Centre in Duncan.
