NEWS BRIEFS Fort St. James sailing club floating low numbers Rebecca Watson Caledonia Courier

The number of members in the Fort St. James sailing club are lower than usual but sailor spirits remain high. Paul Inden, chair of the sailing club and zone forester with the Natural Resources district of Fort St. James, says anyone is always welcome to join in on the sailing fun at his home on Stuart Lake. “We have the boats for families who don’t and the older members are always willing to take people out,” said Mr. Inden. The BC Sailing camp has also noticed a decrease in the participants this year with only eight kids in attendance. It was however the first time there’s been volunteers that have taken the class before. “Hopefully they can pass it on,” said Chris Carberry, BC Sailing Association instructor. Morgon Bennison,15, is a member of the Fort St. James sailing club and volunteered with the camp last week. “I love the fact you don’t have to pay for gas. Sailing is great, but not that many people do it anymore. Theres only 3 kids left in the club so hopefully the camp gets more people involved,” said Morgon.

Summer time brings Ms. Gauthier a fulltime ranching job tending to over 15 acres of land and 250 animals, but somehow she has still found time this year for various art projects around town. As the volunteer artist in residence for the National Historic Site in Fort St. James, she provided complimentary painting demonstrations at the site’s aboriginal days event and will be doing demonstrations at the sites Caledonia Days event July 19 to 20. “I would eventually like to see the site develop a program where every year they have a new artist of residence come and inspire the community,” said Ms. Gauthier. Mature student inspires better life REBECCA WATSON Caledonia Courier

Knowing what course to take in college can be a tough decision, especially when it’s been 20 years since high school. Successfully proving it can be done, Fort St. James resident Jeremiah Free, 39, is now on his way to becoming a certified mechanic after taking the 28-week Access to Trades program at the College of New Caledonia’s Fort St. James campus. “He is a dedicated and motivated student who has seized the opportunity for upgrading. As a role model for the school he has not only met requirements, but is exceeding them,” said Anne McCormick, the director of the Fort St. James campus for the College of New Caledonia. Professors and colleagues alike have recognized his commitment, and so has Indspire, a large supporter of indigenous education in Canada, who recently awarded him a special grant for all his hard work. However it wasn’t too long ago Mr. Free didn’t even know where to start. “I hadn’t even been on a

computer since high school,” said Mr. Free. That’s when he heard about the Access to Trades program, which consists of in-class learning in reading, writing and math, as well as hands-on learning for various trades. Course participants are also granted numerous certificates throughout the duration of the program including, first aid, power saw and H2S safety training. “I would recommend the course to anybody who hasn’t been in school for a while because it points you in the right direction so you can figure out which road you should take,” said Mr. Free. Within the same week of completing the course, Mr. Free jumped right into a heavy-duty mechanics program also offered at the College of New Caledonia. “I actually kind of fell into it. Most of us weren’t sure what we wanted to get into. [Heavy duty mechanics] is a hard course but I wanted to see if I could do it,” said Mr. Free. Mr. Free is now on track to graduating next month and will then have two post-secondary courses under his belt.

Whats It’s Like: To go sailing on a 15 foot sailboat Rebecca Watson Caledonia Courier

Whoosh. A big gust of wind lends strength to the sail and away we go. Speeding through the water it’s been ten seconds since we left shore and already I am completely soaked. The boat crashes through each wave, water spraying everywhere. I can feel the rush of raw energy all around me. The wind is around 20 knots, what have I gotten myself into? I am restless and on all fours awaiting instruction. Paul Inden is the captain of this voyage, seasoned sailor and zone forester with the Natural Resources district of Fort St. James. He’s steering and seated calmly near the back of the boat. As we continue to pick up speed I am told to sit down. I find myself wildly searching for somewhere to hold onto as I bounce up and down because of the waves. I finally centre myself on the front corner of the boat with my legs hanging over the edge. I take a deep breath and laugh, the water spray

“What It’s Like : a series of community involvement lived through first-hand experience.” tickling my feet. I look up and now is the first time since we pushed off I’ve had a chance to notice the scenery. Wow… what a beautiful view it is, to be surrounded by open water and mountains in the distance. In that moment all the crashing, water spraying, and bouncing of the waves become blurred and I just feel free. Like a fish in the ocean. Like Rose at the front of the Titanic. How invigorating to feel nothing but the wind. Maybe this is how Pocahontas felt. “Ok were going to turn now,” said Mr. Inden. “Get ready to switch sides. Now.... GO!”

I scramble to the other side making sure my head stays under the height of the sail. I find the same symmetrical space to hold onto as the boat slowly turns. The sail is flapping in the wind and suddenly tightens up. “Let the sail go. Pull that rope and let the sail go,” said Mr. Inden. I do what he says and whoosh, the sail opens and away we go. We’re now speeding through the water in the opposite direction. What an intense feeling. Knowing you are in control but it is the wind that powers you. We whipped back and forth in the water a few more times before heading towards the shore. My heart still racing and my body full of adrenaline. I’ll admit, I was scared at first, but I would go sailing again any time. Thanks to Paul Inden for taking me out on his sailboat and to Stuart Lake for offering up some fun waves.

The outreach services behind St. Patricks church is hoping to reach independent status and soon become the Stuart Lake Outreach Program. Right now the funds for the food bank flow through the church but, by becoming a registered charity, the funds would become separate, said Rev. Gwen Andrews, who along with her husband Rev. Roy Andrews have been the Anglican ministers at St. Patricks since 2007 and began the lunch program and food bank in 2010. “When we came to Fort St. James we saw a need and began investigating ways to offer these services.” said Rev. Gwen. Since September of last year the food bank services has become well established and has run on a regular schedule. Every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. participants are welcomed to a free lunch and the food bank is open on the middle Wednesday of each month from 10:00 a.m to noon. A Thurs-

Anyone with things to donate can bring them by St. Patricks church any Tuesday morning between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Since the program is continually expanding, anyone interested in volunteering can contact Gwen Andrews at 250-570-9225.

NEWS Metis artisian shows history through beadwork

Lisa Shepherd, Metis artist REBECCA WATSON Caledonia Courier

Beadwork has always been a part of aboriginal heritage and some of the finest examples are coming to Fort St. James. As a nationally sought

after Metis artist, Lisa Shepherd’s one-of-a-kind artwork includes custom made moccasins, garments and jewellery, and will be showcased at the National Historic Sites Caledonia Days event July 19 to 20. For her,

beading is a way of giving people back a piece of their own history. “Metis, Inuit and first nations all have one thing in common. A bit of our history has been lost so I work to preserve it,” said Ms. Shepherd. Meeting people on her travels that don’t know much about their Metis background is a big reason Ms. Shepherd feels the need to share her art. “Some people with a small percentage may feel it’s not worth it but its actually a huge part of them. For the people that don’t know a lot about their background, that first piece of beadwork is the first time they are holding their own history,” said Ms. Shepherd. On a mission to spread knowledge with art, Ms. Shepherd does on-on-one mentoring classes as well as presentations at schools about her experiences being a Metis artist. She even

teaches a jigging workshop which will be demonstrated at the Caledonia Days event. “Even if your not aboriginal don’t be afraid to come try it out and ask questions. I would love to have a conversation and hopefuly you can learn about the culture.

loved making clothing. eventually she found the big-city fashion life was gearing her away from what was important to her. So she quit and started working for herself. “I still design, but now

“[Beading] is a part of our past and our history but it’s important it’s being brought into today. It’s teaching people who we are today,” said Ms. Shepherd. As a member of the aboriginal community, Ms. Shepherd has a passion for Metis fashion. She attended Fraser Valley University for clothing design and worked in the fashion industry for a few years. Although she

it’s on my own terms,” said Ms. Shepherd. Working for herself has proven to be a cleaver move. Her Metis art has become recognized across Canada, and is known for its heirloom-quality. A few of her

hand-crafted garments were used for the opening of the 2010 olympics and are currently being showcased in the Gabriel Dumont virtual museum of Metis history in Saskatchewan. Ms. Shepherd’s art is not only known for historical authenticity but originality. One piece she made consisted of a black-and-white photo transferred onto cookum (grandmother) print, a floral prairie-dress style print. She worked beads from the Jasper trading post around the outside and it is currently being displayed at the Jasper Yellowhead Museum. She has since done baby-cloth bags and even a mans smoking hat with beadwork and a hand-tied tassel. “It’s a part of our past and our history but it’s important it’s being brought into today. It’s teaching people who we are today,” said Ms. Shepherd. To find out more about Lisa Shepherd’s Metis art visit her website at www. lisashepherd.ca.

"The photo above is of Ida Swift, daughter of Mrs. Suzette Swift and is currently being showcased in the Jasper Yellowhead Museum. The head of the baby doll she carries on her back is also in the museum now. It had been in a cabinet at the Pallisades Education Centre and when I saw it there I recognized it from this photo. I let the Parks Canada staff that was working at the Centre know and I was pleased to see during my last trip to Jasper that the doll's head is now in the museum. I feel that I've helped piece together a bit of a historical puzzle and have reunited two artifacts that should be together." -- Lisa Shepherd

A fire ban is now in effect for the Prince George Fire Centre as of Friday, July 11. The Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resource has put a restriction on all open fires. Areas included in the ban are, but not limited to, Fort St. James, Vanderhoof,

danger rating being as high as it is, the ban will probably continue for a while," said Navi Saini, a fire information officer with the wildfire management branch. The ban will remain in effect until September 30, or until the public is otherwise notified. The Ministry has also restricted activities such as burning waste, grass fires or the use of fireworks and sky lanterns. There are six fire centres across the prov-

ince. Inside the Prince George fire Centre alone there has been 146 fires and two fires of note (fires that are more complex and harder to put out). Since 2004, the provincial average is 637 to date. So far this year the province has seen over 450 fires. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire call 1-800-663-5555. For updates on current wildfire activity visit www. bcwildfire.ca.
