The image of Schürrle weeping into the arms of Yorke was one of the memorable moments of the post-game celebration in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All the wives and girlfriends of the players came on to the pitch to celebrate with their men. “This is the best moment of my life. I had to cry because I was so overcome. I couldn’t stop it,” Schürrle said in a TV interview.

Montana’s parents Stephen and Susan Yorke still live in Maple Ridge, and were at Vancouver’s Alpen Club for the World Cup final – and all the games. Watching their daughter and Schürrle in those emotional moments after the golden goal, on the sporting world’s biggest stage, was “pretty powerful stuff,” said Stephen. The British tabloid press follows the wives and girlfriends of “footballers,” dubbing them “WAGs”. There are stories, videos and pictures of the young lovebirds

Stephen said his daughter was briefly a hostess at the local Earls, but has never been a waitress or model. Ridge councillor floats amalgamation with Pitt Meadows Merger could bring down costs, says departing Ashlie by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents may have to consider merging if they want to control escalating infrastructure costs and property taxes. “It can’t be about driving up the taxes. It has to be about bringing down the costs,” said Maple Ridge Coun. Cheryl Ashlie. If people want to keep bringing costs down, a more systematic approach to running both municipalities allowing economies of scale is needed. “I’ve always been in favour of being together as one. It wouldn’t bother me in the least.” Ashlie said she’d welcome the dis-
cussion of amalgamation. “We have a joint hospital. We have joint police. We have joint parks and leisure.” What’s lacking however is an inclination from the public. Ashlie is retiring from politics in November and says she never raised it while on council because there’s no support for it. “I just know there’s no appetite from the citizens. The people have to drive that type of change because it’s so personal.” People regularly use services in either community but when it comes to identifying where they’re from they support their municipalities. However, when it comes to controlling costs, it’s worth discussing merging the municipalities. Ashlie though didn’t have a particular name in mind, although Ridge Meadows is the most common term, one that’s already used
by the Ridge Meadows RCMP. “That conversation is so far down the path, it wouldn’t be fair to entertain that.” The City of Pitt Meadows recently Ashlie celebrated its 100th anniversary while the District of Maple Ridge marks its 140th anniversary in September. It’s also expected to gain city status at that time. “I personally would not shy from the conversation but I’m not hearing the public driving it.” She said when she was chair of the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board she tried to share staff with the Mission school board but the idea was rejected.
Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters says she never hears people in Pitt Meadows raise the topic, although she occasionally hears it in Maple Ridge. “I have no Walters desire to amalgamate with Maple Ridge. It’s not that I have anything against Maple Ridge, it’s just that we’re unique.” All of the cities in Metro Vancouver could be amalgamated into one city, she added. “I don’t know that you’d save any money in the end. “I think we in Pitt Meadows do a great job delivering services for the least cost possible.” Amalgamated or not, municipal services still would require the same number
of employees to deliver them. The only savings would be at the administrative level. The source of the discussion bothers the mayor a bit, however. “It’s very concerning to me when someone who works for the MLA’s office is saying that,” Walters said. “I’m concerned where that’s coming from.” In addition to be an outgoing councillor for Maple Ridge, Ashlie is part-time constituency assistant for Liberal Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing. Ashlie said Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are already ahead of most communities with the amount of services they share. The next discussions would be sharing government and infrastructure projects. “I’m leaving politics so it won’t be me.” If amalgamation happened 20 years from now, Ashlie said she’d be OK with that as well
Katzie band closes Wharf Street Former landfill site plagued by illegal dumping by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
The Katzie First Nation has sealed off an unpaved road between Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to prevent people from dumping garbage and speeding through the reserve. Concrete blocks were put up at the end of Wharf Street in Hammond two weeks ago, blocking access into the reserve. There have been parties, speeding vehicles and fires on the property, said band member Coleen Pierre. “It’s uncontrollable and out of our hands.” Someone dumped a large pile of garbage near the wall soon after it went up. “There continue to be major issues with people using our reserve as a dumping ground and this can no longer be tolerated,” said Katzie First Nation chief Susan Miller. “We did go through the garbage and found bills and mail addressed to Maple Ridge residents.” People are also using the secluded site near the Golden Ears Bridge to burn toxic material. Last summer, a man sparked brush fire while trying to siphon gas from a car. Previously used as a landfill, the property is a popular dumping ground for everything from stolen vehicles to furniture and building material. The dirt road is also used as a short

Pitt Meadows fire chief Don Jolley said the closure will not affect emergency response to the Katzie First Nation as the fire department uses main roads to access the reserve. The District of Maple Ridge was not told about the closure but intends to install a sign to warn motorists before they drive into a concrete wall.

Hammond residents would like the closure addressed by the district which is currently working on an area plan to guide development in the historic neighbourhood. On the Facebook group Hammond Neighbours, residents wondered how they would leave the area if a train was stuck on the tracks. “The garbage dumping on the Katzie land has been atrocious to say the least, and I don’t blame them for blocking it off,” wrote Charlotte Mitchell.
“Nevertheless, there is no other egress in the event of a train disaster or stall along Lorne and Ditton … maybe this needs to be addressed within the area plan.” Maple Ridge director of engineering operations Russ Carmichael said a typical large single location cleanup costs between $300 to $500 when a back hoe and truck are required. The costs include picking up garbage, hauling and tipping fees. A small cleanup that fits in a pickup truck costs around $100.

Council keeps nominators at 2 Maple Ridge council considered raising the bar to run for council -- but has decided to keep things they way are. A majority on council last week supported Coun. Cheryl Ashlie’s amendment to the election bylaw – keeping the number of signatures required on a candidate’s nomination form to two. The bylaw, reflecting changes in provincial law, had suggested that be increased to 10, in an attempt to whittle down the number of candidates on the municipal ballot. In the 2011 election, 28 people ran for council. But Ashlie said requiring 10 people to sign a nomination form, reveals who those 10 people support. “By having it as a rule, I think it flies in the face of our structure of democracy where everybody has the right to have their vote secret.” Instead, it’s up to the public to determine whether a candidate should sit on council. Ashlie’s motion received the support of council, although Couns. Corisa Bell and Bob Masse opposed the bylaw. They had also earlier proposed adding referendum questions to the ballot as a means of stimulating voter interest but a majority of council opposed that. In the 2011 election, 25 per cent voted, down from 29 per cent in 2008 and 31 per cent in 2005.

On June 5, 2014 residents of the Hammond neighbourhood came out in force for an Open House that unveiled the photos from the Hammond Community Character Photo project and the Hammond History videos. This was also a chance for community members to meet District staff from the Planning, Engineering, Parks and Communications teams and ask questions and provide their thoughts and visions for the Hammond Area Plan that is currently under development. One of the results of that meeting was to establish the boundaries that will be used for the Area Plan. The next phase of the planning process is an online consultation that will allow area residents to answer questions that have emerged as a result of the first meeting. The questions will be posted online, every few weeks, with summary information on the feedback added every week or so. These questionnaires will continue into October. In addition, we are also asking members of the community to share photos as part of the #MyHammond Summer Fun photo project. The photos will be collected in an online gallery on the District website at mapleridge.ca and placed on the District’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ yourmapleridge. The gallery will be called “#MyHammond Summer Fun” and area residents are asked to submit photos of summer activities, gardens in bloom, or local wildlife for this gallery directly to the special project email at myhammond@mapleridge.ca. Once again, we will use your photos as a backdrop at the next Open House. Our thanks to all of the area residents who have taken the time to provide their comments. Please help us spread the word so that everyone in the neighbourhood has a strong voice in this process.

Dog saved from scorching SUV Employee unlocks door through open window by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
A rottweiler locked in Humvee parked in the blazing sun was rescued Thursday by a group of bystanders in Maple Ridge. The dog was barking and panting inside the black four-wheel drive vehicle, parked at Save-On-Foods on a day when temperatures soared to 32 C As a window of the Humvee was partially open, Liam Healy, who works at Save-OnFoods, reached in, unlocked the door and freed the dog. Healy filmed the rescue and posted a clip to YouTube and Facebook. The group of rescuers led the dog to shade and gave him water until the owner arrived. Witnesses said the owner was irate, snatched the dog and drove off in the Humvee, which has Alberta licence plates. Despite on-going warnings and public service announcements about the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars, B.C. SPCA constables are being inundated with calls this summer to rescue pets left in parked vehicles. Last month alone, the B.C. SPCA responded
to 228 calls to rescue dogs in distress who had been left in hot cars by their guardians. “The media is wonderful about helping us get the message out that it can be fatal to leave your pet in a hot car, even for 10 minutes, but still we receive hundreds of calls about animals in distress,” said Lorie Chortyk, with the BC SPCA. “We can’t stress strongly enough how dangerous this is for your pet.” With temperatures soaring this week, the SPCA is urging people to leave their pets at home. “The temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill a pet,” says Chortyk. In just minutes, the temperature in a parked car can climb to above 38 C. Dogs have no sweat glands, so they can only cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws. Dogs can withstand high temperatures for only a short time – in some cases just minutes – before suffering irreparable brain damage or death. Pet owners should be alert to heatstroke symptoms, which include: exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting),
Man breaks leg after diving off cliff in Golden Ears Was jumping into tributary of Gold Creek A man seriously injured his leg Sunday after diving off a cliff in Golden Ears Provincial Park. Ridge Meadows RCMP said an air ambulance had to be called to transport the man to hospital because of the severity of the injury. The man was diving off rocks into a tributary of Gold Creek that flows into Alouette Lake, a popular swimming spot in the summer months located in east Maple Ridge. Assistant fire chief Timo Juurakko said friends of the man floated him to shore where he was helped by an off-duty paramedic until emergency personnel arrived. An ambulance transported the man from the lake’s North Beach to an area near the entrance of the park where the air ambulance had landed. At the end of June, a 22-year-old woman from Surrey drowned in the fast-moving creek after slipping off rocks near the Upper Falls. Her body has not yet surfaced. RCMP said water in the creek is still too high but their helicopter Air One is conducting an aerial search of the creek on a regular basis.
rapid or erratic pulse, salivation, anxious or staring expression, weakness and muscle tremors, lack of coordination, convulsions or vomiting, and collapse. “If you’re used to letting your dog accompany you on errands, you might feel guilty leaving him behind on hot summer days. But your dog will be much happier – and safer – at home, with shade and plenty of fresh cool water,” Chortyk adds.
If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke: • Move the animal to a cool, shady place; • Wet the dog with cool water; • Fan vigorously to promote evaporation. This will cool the blood, which reduces the animal’s core temperature. • Do not apply ice. This constricts blood flow, inhibiting cooling. • Allow the dog to drink some cool water (or to lick ice cream if no water is available).
People unlocked an SUV Thursday to get a dog out of hot vehicle.

Time to face issue of mental illness
Published and printed by Black Press at 22328 – 119th Avenue, Maple Ridge, B.C., V2X 2Z3
Ingrid Rice
F
ew can argue that mental illness touches everyone. There are, of course, those with the diagnosis. Then there are their children, siblings, parents, friends and co-workers. Even complete strangers are often hit with the ripples, as society is forced to bear the burden of missed work days, medical visits, inadequate treatment options, etc. It doesn’t matter that research has led to many strategies and treatments that can help sufferers live productive, even normal, lives. Perhaps if it was easier to talk openly about mental illness, things would be different. For those directly affected, it can feel simpler to ignore the reality – to keep the door closed and the windows shuttered, so to speak. Not the healthiest approach, really, but common nonetheless. And while time has led to strides in the realm of mental illness, it has done less for society’s acceptance of it as a disease. Many worthwhile stories do not get told in these pages because of the stigma attached to mental illness; the fear people have of being branded by going public with their struggle. Mental illness are still two words that, despite so-called progress, few afflicted with the likes of depression or schizophrenia or paranoia dare to mutter outside – sometimes even inside – their immediate family. Many of these individuals are parents, siblings, friends or colleagues of those living with a mental illness. A few are those individuals themselves, who have taken that brave step into the spotlight. No one should feel the need to hide something they cannot control. The reality is, many of us share the blame for the fact so many people do. - Black Press Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Letting drivers set the speed limits VICTORIA – “Fast is the new slow,” declared one Toronto newspaper’s front page when the B.C. government announced it is increasing speed limits around the province. The headline picked up on Transportation Minister Todd Stone’s justification for B.C. Views Tom Fletcher raising limits on 35 stretches of rural B.C. highway. Stone referred to traffic studies that show portions of the highway system where the vast majority of drivers already travel at the new speeds. Stone emphasized that accident risk is not so much a function of speed, but of differences in speed between vehicles. That’s why the signs going up this summer will include a new warning for left lane hogs: “Keep Right – Let Others Pass.” For the first time, there is a 120 km/h limit on three segments of rural divided highway, parts of the Coquihalla, the Okanagan Connector and a stretch between Parksville and Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Having regularly driven up and down the B.C. Interior highway system for the past 30 years, I can confirm that particularly once you get “beyond Hope,” drivers do set the speed limit. In good conditions, it’s generally about 10 km over the posted maximum, particularly in the long spaces between communities where resources to do regular speed enforcement simply don’t exist.
Improvements in the road system, and the modern vehicles that drive it, have been enormous. My last trip was in June, up the Fraser Canyon and on through the Cariboo to Prince George. The canyon offers some of the harshest road-building conditions in Canada, but even portions of that cliff-hanging, rockand-tunnel road are getting increases from 90 to 100 km/h. There are two common assumptions about this move. One is that increasing the speed limit means people will automatically drive faster. The other is that higher speeds mean more accidents, or at least more severe accidents. The government downplayed opposition to this change, which Stone signalled last fall when he launched the public consultation. Police agencies don’t like it. ICBC officials are skeptical to say the least. ICBC’s latest rate increase was attributed mostly to cost pressure from higher injury payouts, and it will be tracking the sections of higher speed limit to see if the number of severe accidents goes up. Speed wasn’t singled out when interim ICBC boss Mark Blucher made the case for an increase of nearly five per cent on basic insurance last fall. One reason why claims for bodily injury, pain and suffering, future care and loss of earnings are going up is that more people are hiring lawyers. Another reason is distraction, not just from mobile devices but also more pedestrians and cyclists in urban areas. Are drivers getting worse? A recent report out of Saskatchewan suggests they are.
In 2013, only 48 per cent of new drivers in Saskatchewan passed their road test. The test hasn’t changed much in the past decade, and there are more immigrants who aren’t accustomed to highway driving, North America style. But a veteran driving instructor calls today’s new drivers “the weakest generation I’ve ever taught,” after they spent their formative passenger years watching TV or playing with game machines and other screens while on the road.
“Today’s drivers, ‘the weakest generation I’ve ever taught. … they’re so connected to e-devices they don’t look out of car windows.” Margot Podiluk, driving instructor
“The awareness level isn’t where it was when I started 15 years ago,” Margot Podiluk told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. “Today’s generation, they’re so connected to electronic devices they don’t look out of car windows.” If raising speed limits is a mistake, accident statistics will soon tell the tale. My expectation is that on rural highways, speed limits are just catching up to the traffic. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. Editor, The News Despite advertisements to the contrary, the B.C. government continues to pay nothing for class size and class composition. The Learning Improvement Fund is a government program earmarked to deal with class size and composition issues created by the illegal contract stripping in 2002 [BC Supreme Court (Griffin) 2011 and 2014]. The Learning Improvement Fund, $60 million paid to school boards in 2013-14, was to be used to hire specialist teachers, support staff, and special education assistants in order to decrease class sizes and improve class composition. In the same school year, the Clark government inexplicably downloaded costs previously covered by Victoria, resulting in massive school board deficits of $60 M provincewide. These deficits resulted in cuts to specialist teachers, support staff, and special education assistants, increasing class size, and negatively affecting students with special needs. Similar cost downloads in 2012-13 resulted in similar school board deficits in that school year. This net-zero shell game has to stop, Premier Clark. Provide the funding … our kids are too important! necessarily net a better election environment. On election turn-out in general, municipal staff who are legislatively assigned through a bylaw to the task of organizing the local election have committed to a strong public awareness campaign and more opportunities for voting leading up to the actual Nov. 15 date. Council is expected to stay out of this, as it could provide an environment of potential conflict or manipulation. In closing, I have never understood why we have to convince people to vote, as I know we all know our country’s history and the sacrifices that were made to protect democracy. Having been an elected official and experienced the breadth of decisions that have to be made and how they affect the community, no one has to convince me to vote. On Nov. 15, my name will not be on the ballot, but I have complete respect for those who will be on it and I have even more respect for the people who take the time to vote. Maple Ridge among lowest for fees
GRAND OPENING
Survey looked at levies charged to developers by S teph Trou ghton Contributor
In a 2013 industrial development cost survey of 18 municipalities conducted by the National Association of Properties the District of Maple Ridge ranked second lowest for total amount of development fees collected last year. Mayor Ernie Daykin says the result was not surprising given that the district has always
FREE EYE TESTING NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED
been diligent about regularly reviewing and quantifying its fees. That shows Maple Ridge is “a welcoming community for new business. “Our charges have to be reflective of the cost of doing business and they are,” Daykin said. The City of Pitt Meadows ranked 10th lowest, an improvement from the 2011 survey where the ranking was reported to be 12th. Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters says her council was pleased and also not surprised with the results. “It’s about where we
thought it would be,” she says. Developer feedback Pitt Meadows council has heard over the years has usually been positive, Walters adds. Daykin “We hear that quite often – we’re easy to do business with.” The City of Burnaby had the lowest ranking in the survey with a total fee collection of $184,209, and the City of Richmond was the highest with a total fee collection of $1,030,418.
Maple Ridge collected $239,679 and Pitt Meadows collected $418,051. Fees accounted for in the survey include subdivision, building and development permits, development cost charges, sewer and water connections and rezoning fees. The association conducts an annual survey, alternating between an office or industrial scenario to determine municipal costs and development approval timelines.

AS SEEN ON ARKETPLA CE C’S M Thanks Bruce I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optometrist. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Montana met Schürrle, who plays forward for London’s Chelsea, over the holiday season, and they began dating in January. “He’s a real down-toearth, good guy,” said Stephen. “That’s my impression.” The Maple Ridge couple never paid much attention to soccer, called football outside North America, in the past, but they do now. “Now we’re huge soccer fans,” laughed Susan. “I never realized how exciting it is.” Both of Susan’s par-
ents are German, so cheering for Schürrle and his national team was an easy fit. As long as Canada continues not to qualify for the World Cup, Stephen is not conflicted in his allegiance to his family’s adopted national team either, he said. Reached on Tuesday, Montana didn’t want to add any comments. Montana’s brother Dalton, a defenceman who plays in the Western Hockey League with the Kelowna Rockets, was fortunate enough to be invited to fly to Europe on Monday, to join his sister and her friends in their celebrations.
Germany won first World Cup as united country Sunday with the help of André Schürrle. Montana Yorke got to hoist the trophy after win in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Fraser River risks threaten economy: report Business groups back urgent action on flood works by Jef f Nage l Black Press
A new report underscores the Fraser River’s importance to the Lower Mainland economy. It calls for an urgent program of dredging and other flood prevention measures, as well as upgrades to critical infrastructure. Ordered by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with other chambers, the study warns the region narrowly escaped a major flood in 2007. “The river came perilously close to overtopping the dikes in the Fraser Valley during the spring freshet,” says the report, released today. It cites estimates that another flood rivaling the record flood of 1894 would cause billions of dollars in damage and catastrophic losses for the 300,000 residents of the floodplain, as well as business and industry. Unlike the sparsely populated farmland of 120 years ago, there is now $50-billion worth of development on the Fraser’s floodplain. “Failure to deal expeditiously with this problem will leave a large part of the Lower Mainland at risk of enormous damage.” The study comes a few days after new provin-
cial government studies projected major floods will be more frequent and severe as a result of climate change, and warned most dikes in the Fraser Valley are not high enough. The new research on the influence of climate change and the severe flooding in Calgary and Toronto last year “highlighted the need to act urgently to enhance flood protection along the Lower Fraser,” according to the report released by the business groups. It notes $9.5 billion is needed in Metro Vancouver to adapt to an expected rise in sea level. “With rising sea levels, there is a growing threat of winter storm surges that already could overtop the very extensive diking system along the tidal part of the river and adjacent coastal reaches.” The challenges posed by the river are made more difficult by the fragmented governance of the region, the report said, noting there are 15 municipal governments, 29 first nations and more than 20 provincial or federal ministries involved. “It is very important that a renewed, collaborative, multi-level government effort be undertaken to renew protection from floods.” The report echoes concerns raised by Port Metro Vancouver over the loss of industrial land along the river to residential redevelop-

It also calls for ongoing dredging of the lower river channels to New Westminster for shipping. It also says the replacement of the Massey Tunnel with a bridge as “an urgent priority” in light of its vulnerability to an earthquake and the potential for larger or more heavily laden ships to sail upriver once it’s removed. It also urges replacement of the aging New Westminster rail bridge, which causes significant delays for freight trains and is vulnerable to be being knocked out.

The first summer heat wave of 2014 is in its last sweltering day. The Lower Mainland’s medical health officers, the Fraser Health Authority and Coastal Health issued warnings to the public. There was also an air quality warning, as high concentrations of ground-level ozone are expected to persist for several days. The readings spiked in Maple Ridge, Agassiz and Hope. Thirst, dizziness, confusion and even fainting are all symptoms of heat exhaustion. or Emerald Pig Theatrical Society Maple Ridge husband and wife acting team James Rowley and Leanne Koehn, theatre is truly a family affair. Last year marked the debut of their sixyear-old son Felix Rowley and seven-yearold daughter Zoe Koehn who appeared on stage in Macbeth with their parents for the first time. Although attentive to their needs, both mom and dad swear they were not nervous about their children’s first show. “They can’t do anything wrong. Everybody knows they’re kids. They don’t have to be perfect,” says dad. In fact, adds Rowley, children tend to steal the show – and even more so when they are dressed as animals. “What’s the expression? Never work with animals or children.” Having been bitten by the proverbial theatre bug, the two child stars had no trouble returning to the stage for a production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and now the society’s production of the Shakespearean comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Felix and Zoe get the opportunity to portray animal-like characters again cast as Ewoks in this summer’s ninth Bard on the

Leanne Koehn plays Beatrice and her husband James Rowley plays Benedick in Emerald Pig’s production of Much Ado About Nothing, which opens July 17. Bandstand performance. Set in a Star Warslike cantina, the whole production is done in deep space to keep it “fresh and interesting” but also because the play itself references space, explains Koehn. Koehn is playing the lead role in this summer’s performance – the love interest of
Benedick who just happens to be her husband in this case. The two stars met at the University of British Columbia when studying theatre in 1996. Although they fell in love not long after meeting, Rowley admits he initially had an aversion to marriage.
“I didn’t want to get married but I did want to marry Leanne,” he says. He draws a parallel to the performance he is currently in, explaining Benedick has a similar thought process about his love interest. “[Our relationship] was very Benedick and Beatrice from the very beginning,” says Rowley. Pitt Meadows’ opening night also marks the couple’s 16th wedding anniversary, a coincidence they describe as the perfect scenario “where you get to fall in love all over again,” says Koehn. The society recommends theatre spectators bring a picnic lunch or dinner for the play’s preshow entertainment which begins one hour before each performance. Besides craft making for children, preshow entertainment includes live music that even carries into the show itself. On stage with the Shakespearean cast will be a local eight-member band Tiger Mountain Peasants who Koehn and Rowley enthusiastically add are a “fantastic addition” to the show.
Showtime Much Ado About Nothing plays at Spirit Square in Pitt Meadows from Thursday, July 17 to Saturday, July 19 at 8 p.m. It moves to Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge July 24 to July 26 at 8 p.m. There are matinee shows on July 19 and July 26 at 2 p.m. The shows are free but bring non-perishable donations for the food bank. Fibre artist weaves way into Osprey Village Rebecca Fisher picked for artist residency in Pitt Meadows Osprey Village has its first artist-in-residence. A graduate of the Textile Arts Program at Capilano University, Rebecca Fisher has exhibited her work at galleries and shows across the Lower Mainland and the USA and has taught many workshops in textile arts. Since 2008, Fisher has been an entrepreneur creating unique textile designs under the label of Diva’s Niche. Her current work explores natural dyes and natural imagery, while creating accessories, garments and textiles for the home. The Osprey storefront residency offers Fisher an opportunity to reach the next step in her artistic practice and have
a physical storefront to display her work. She will occasionally display the work of other artists and is excited to have the opportunity of connecting with the community through her art. Fisher feels that art is all around us. The natural world offers unlimited opportunities for creative inspiration and it only takes a short walk for her to connect with Fisher her muse. Fisher said generally in her personal works, intent is not planned in advance but is revealed in the process of the making. For her proposed reading yurt project, she would like to think that her intent is connectivity. “Connecting multi-generational groups and exposing them to traditional tech-
niques and natural dyes, forges a greater connectivity with each other and the planet and brings into play a sense of community that is being lost in our fastpaced consumerist world,” says Fisher. It is Fisher’s hope that by sharing the skills, the community will continue to thrive and others will enjoy the meditative time spent in the creative process. Fisher’s residency officially began in July and end in Febru-
ary 2016. • Join Rebecca Fisher at the official opening of her studio on Tuesday, July 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The studio is located at Unit 102, 10973 Barnston View Road. Follow her progress on Facebook at Osprey Village Artist In Residence - Rebecca Fisher.

Join Robyn Picard for a drop-in lesson and dance session at the ACT next week. On Friday, July 25, Picard will teach beginner’s cha-cha, followed by an “all-styles” dance night. Picard, as well as her older siblings, were born into and raised by a dancing family. She started taking jazz, tap, acrobatics, ballet and modern stage at the age of four and went on to learn the various styles of partner dancing that would groom her to follow in her family’s footsteps. Over the past 18 years, she has taught dance around the Lower Mainland. Her goal is to continue to facilitate the growing interest in partner dancing for young and old alike, and to introduce dance into more and more peoples lives as a great form of fitness and fun. • Dances lessons run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays and the practice dance ends at 10 p.m. Tickets are $13 for a lesson and the dance or $10 for the dance only. The next session on Aug. 8 will focus on cross-step waltz. On Aug. 22, Picard will teach the tango.

nce every few years Katie’s Place welcomes a feline that changes us all, an odd feline, different from the rest, who just does not fit in. This trend started with our first feline Katie (our namesake). Katie was grumpy, independent, didn’t have a loving bone in her body, and yet we all wanted to be friends with her. Even when a local news crew came out to do a story on Katie’s Place they insisted they wanted a shot with Katie. We warned them. They didn’t listen. They left with a few deep scratches and wounded egos. There have been others throughout the years and Moira is the most recent. Moira had been declawed before she came to us, so we knew there could be a problem. Most declawed cats end up lashing out and biting because their only means of defence has been taken away from them. Declawing is a horrible, painful surgery and many cats just aren’t themselves after. When Moira first arrived we set her up in our main pen, closest to the entrance, hoping she would get as much exposure as possible. From day one, Moira perched herself on the top of a cabinet and would swat anyone who walked by. She may have been declawed, but she put enough muscle into her swats to really make them hurt. But Moira was miserable in the main pen, made all the cats in there miserable, and the volunteers were afraid of her aerial attacks. We moved Moira into the hallway. Fewer cats to pick on, more territory to dominate, and the volunteers a chance to avoid running into her. Then Moira got smart and would hide in one of the hallway perches, and if you were unlucky enough to enter “her” space you would get a quick whack on the head. Sometimes it was even hard to see where the attack came from because she retreated so quickly. We moved the perches away from the doors leading into the pens in order to avoid the Moira blitzkrieg. One day, Moira decided she liked to drink her water straight out of the tap. So she would sit at the edge of the sink with a look that said, “if you wish to live another day you better turn that tap on pronto”. In no time at all, she had us all trained … It was simple really. Do as she says or suffer the consequences. The funny thing is that despite her crabby attitude, everyone loved Moira. We talked about her, joked about her, would threaten each

other with her. It was all in fun because Moira had somehow gotten a hold of all the hearts that tended to her. Moira on the other hand did a little “iny, mini miney moe” and her little toe settled on a

long-term volunteer named Evelyn. While the rest of us still circled Moira as much as possible, Moira would cuddle with Evelyn. Give her kisses and stare adoringly into her eyes. We are sure that at first, even Evelyn was a bit taken aback by the black and white girl we lovingly nicknamed “Viper.” But it soon became obvious that Moira would never lift a paw to Evelyn. The look in Moira’s eyes when she saw Evelyn was of pure, unconditional love … We knew Moira would never find a home so Evelyn took her home because you can’t deny true love. Unfortunately, poor Moira, who finally found herself exactly where she belonged, got sick and died within a few weeks. It was a sad day for all, especially Evelyn. There had to be a purpose for why Moira came to us, a reason why we were given the chance to know her. I think for each one of us the reason will be different. But I think we can all agree that Katie’s Place will never be the same without that silly little girl.

Three gold and one silver result at provincial boxla championships by Nei l Corbe tt Staff Reporter

ll four local teams got the opportunity to play for a gold medal, as Ridge Meadows Lacrosse hosted the 2014 Minor Box Lacrosse Female Provincial Championships from July 9-13. Three of the teams – junior, midget and bantam – won gold, and the pee wees took silver. “It was quite a weekend,” said Wes Eaton, who heads the Burrards girls program. He said getting all four local teams into gold medal games was an unexpected and amazing accomplishment. “This year was an exceptional year for us. It was great for us to host it, and be in all the finals.” He noted the five-day tournament was the longest ever, made necessary by the roundrobin format. There were six teams in each of the four divisions. They played each other once, for five round-robin games. Then, the top two teams played for gold, and the third and fourth teams played for bronze. There was no room for a semi-final upset. “Everybody liked the format, because whoever was the best team could go for gold,” said Eaton. He also coaches the junior Burrards, who were underdogs heading into the tournament, in that they hadn’t managed to beat Coquitlam. In round-robin play, they changed that with a 2-1 win. They also beat Port Coquitlam 5-4, Burnaby 5-4, and Nanaimo 6-0, and tied New Westminster 2-2. In the final, they faced Coquitlam again, winning 5-3. Eaton said the Burrards solved Coquitlam by focusing on shutting down three girls who did almost all their scoring. “We had a better balanced team – every line can score,” he said. For Eaton, in seven seasons this was his fifth coaching at the provincials. He had two silver finishes to his credit. “Gold is a way better feeling,” he said. Ashley Heisler was chosen to the junior allstar team, and Leah Burnett won the fair play award. Jason McDole coached the midgets to a thrilling 6-3 win over New West in the final. In round-robin play they beat Nanaimo 7-0, Coquitlam 5-1, Port Coquitlam 6-2 and New West Two 4-2. They tied New West One 4-4. It was his fifth provincial championship. The team he coaches is a powerhouse that has won three previous B.C. tournaments. However, this was their first year at the midget level. They were expected to be favourites to win it all again next year. They’re ahead of schedule. “For us to win it this year was a big surprise,” said McDole, noting of his 19 girls, only six are second-year players. “They’re just a really good core group of kids. They listen, and they work their butts off.” They all play hard for each other. Committed defence, strong goaltending and a smart passing game set the midgets apart. McDole noted there are a couple of girls who are only in their second year of lacrosse, “but they’re doing something on the floor to help the team win.” “Five teams could have won the tournament, and four of them were strong,” said McDole. “We feel fortunate and happy that we were in it to the end.”
Jayde Meredith, left, of the Burrards during a championship bantam game against New Westminster 2 at Planet Ice on Sunday. Megan Kinna was chosen to the all-star team, and Mikayla Quinn won the midget fair play award. Coach Chris Gill, the former star player who is best known as the coach of the Maple Ridge Burrards, also coaches both the pee wee and bantam girls teams. The bantams humbled New Westminster 9-0 to win gold. In round-robin play they had some big wins: 18-0 over Nanaimo, 7-0 against Port Coquitlam, 7-5 over Langley, 4-3 against New West Two, and 7-5 over New West One. Paige Bell was chosen to the bantam all-star team, and Jayde Meredith won the fair play award. The pee wees became the first team this year to best a previously undefeated powerhouse team from Semiahmoo. Then, the Semi girls came gunning for revenge in the final, and took the game 10-0. The Ridge pee wees started the tournament on Wednesday night with a 9-7 won over Nanaimo, then beat New West 5-4, upset Semiahmoo 6-5, and doubled both Coquitlam and Burnaby by 6-3 scores. The pee wee all star was Jade Lenton, and Alexa Ford won the fair play award. Lenton, Bell and Kinna were selected as tournament most valuable players in their divisions. Bronze medal game scores were: Pee Wee: New West over PoCo 5-2; Bantam: New West#1 3-2 over Langley; Midget: New West#2 over Port Co 5-1; Junior: New West#1 over Burnaby 6-3. Eaton was given the volunteer award.

Runner to compete at Hershey’s meet Maple Ridge middle distance runner Nicholas ‘Nico’ Aron will compete at a continental track and field championship meet this summer. The Hershey’s Track and Field Games North American Final, which has been hosted by the chocolate giant for 37 years, will be held on Aug. 2 in Hershey, Penn. The event emphasizes fun and accommodates average athletes, not all track stars, but Aron should be among the elite. He has been training with Canadian Olympic gold medal sprinter Robert “Blast Off ” Esmie at South Fraser Track Club in Surrey. So far, he has had a successful track season,
with 27 races won to date and athletics standard times met for both the 800 meter and 1200 m events. The 12-year-old attended Yennadon elementary in Maple Ridge, where he is an outstanding student and received the Math Award this year. The event is billed as the largest program of its kind in North America, and provides athletes aged nine to 14 an opportunity to participate in basic track and field events. The meet includes visits to the Hershey’s Chocolate World attraction and the Hershey chocolate factory.
