No decision over camping at CDCC
BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff A discussion about whether RV camping should be allowed at Creston and District Community Complex came to no resolution at the July 8 meeting of the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s Creston Valley services committee. The issue arose from concerns expressed recently at the Creston town council level, with Coun. Gerry Schmalz arguing that the practice takes away business from local campground operators. A report by the community complex’s recreation supervisor, Neil Ostafichuk, described the practice of families camping while a summer swim meet takes place as having “at least” a 25-year history. When the outdoor pool was the venue, he said, on-site camping was traditionally allowed because of “concerns with security of the timers and other meet equipment in and around the pool.”

With a studio crammed with musical instruments and recording equipment only steps from his house on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road, Gary Deatherage doesn’t have much of a commute to get to work. Not “work” in the usual definition, of course. But the retired psychologist composes and records music and stories with the same discipline he learned in the United States army, post-secondary studies, university instructor and a private psychology practice. “I’m usually out here by 6:30 a.m. and I work on various projects for a couple of hours before I go back to the house,” he said, as he pulled up recordings on a MacBook to illustrate the backlog of songs that need more attention. Fort Cosmic Studios is a father-son project, the dream of Deatherage and his son, Jason, an accomplished music producer and drummer. Designed to provide excellent acoustic quality, the studio has been the setting for countless recording sessions by performers who seek out Jason’s production abilities. See STUDIO, page 3

RDCK directors made 0.8 per cent more in 2013 than in 2012 BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star Regional District of Central Kootenay directors and their alternates paid themselves about 0.8 per cent more in 2013 than 2012, financial documents released last month show. Total remuneration, including stipends and expenses, for the 20-member board was $810,067 last year compared to $803,817 the year before. The 11 rural directors each earned a base allowance of $32,220 while the nine municipal directors each received $12,492 in addition to the salary they earn from sitting on
their respective councils. Rates are adjusted annually based on the consumer price index, which increased 0.9 per cent between 2012 and 2013. Directors receive additional pay for attending board meetings and chairing committees and are reimbursed for expenses while travelling on regional district business, including accommodation, mileage at 57 cents per kilometre and up to $75 per day for meals, although they don’t always claim the full amounts. The top earner last year was rural Creston’s John Kettle, who, on top of his director ’s salary, made an

Among other directors, rural Creston’s Larry Binks had the highest expenses at $15,326 and an overall total of $52,753. Not including alternate directors, rural Castlegar’s Gord Zaitsoff had the lowest expense total at $1,544. Among municipal directors, the highest expenses of $10,581 were incurred by Slocan’s Hillary Elliott who was vicechair last year. On the opposite end, Silverton’s Leah Main claimed $3,776.

Studio
From page 1 For Deatherage, Fort Cosmos gives him a quiet and comfortable place to pick away at one of his guitars, looking for a riff or the makings of a tune that eventually merges with lyrics. Over time, the songs might become part of the repertoire of the Howling Wannabes (a band that includes Gary and Jason, David Lyons, Alan Kimmel and others) or II Cosmic (with Gary, Jason and “whoever else we want to involve at the time”). Some of Deatherage’s studio time these days is to move songs he recorded on cassette tapes into a digital format. “I have about 300 songs that haven’t been used that I recorded in the late 1980s and 1990s,” he said. “I am transferring them into the computer but that recording is done in real time, so it gives me a chance to listen as I’m doing it.” Once they are loaded into the computer, he can edit as he wants before turning the songs over to Jason, who adds drums and produces a more finished product. Other musicians can be recruited to add to the sound as needed. “I like to work with others, where the music becomes

more like a collective. It brings in other brains and other spirits,” he said. “But Jason always comes first. He likes to add lush guitar sounds and as a producer he can add those sounds better than anyone.” Oddly, though, performing live isn’t his preference, at least from a quality perspective. “When you get five or six people on stage playing rock music they all kind of go crazy and play too loud,” he said. “And I’m as guilty as anyone else! The music itself is much better when it comes out of the studio.” With the songs from a couple of decades ago, Gary estimates there are sufficient tracks to make about five more II Cosmic albums. “I’m going to finish four or five in the next six to eight months — if I can,” he laughed. “I’m not the youngest guy on the block!” Deatherage’s love of music goes back to his childhood. “When I was a kid I moved all over the place, and three or four places had bands. I always played clarinet. I didn’t keep up with it, but playing clarinet taught me to read music and appreciate it.” It doesn’t take much prodding to turn his attention to a project of epic proportions, one that has been years in the making. Sun Pipes for the Dreamers tells the story of Ramone, a motorcycle accident victim who is completely paralyzed and living in a New Mexico medical facility. Bedridden and living mostly in his own mind, Ramone learns to put himself into his dreams and, eventually, to influence what happens in them. The narrative allows Deatherage to explore subjects with a depth that most media don’t allow. Each chapter of the story, which Deatherage narrates, finishes with one of his songs.
The first “book” of what he originally foresaw as a trilogy, was about 12 hours long. He has now added a prequel to that book, and recorded the second, which is even longer. Work is underway on Book 3, and he now finds himself in a quandary. “It seems that the story is forcing me into a Book 4 situation,” he said. Gary admits that it is difficult to conceive of a broad audience for Sun Pipes. Those who have listened to Book 1 have been positive about it, but finding a way to get it into other hands is a challenge. “I haven’t really figured out how to get it out there,” he admitted. “Maybe it will end up on our website.” It seems appropriate that local painter Alison Masters has been his volunteer editor for Sun Pipes. Turnabout is fair play. When Gary saw her series of paintings, made from sketches on a month-long hike on Spain’s Camino de Santiago, projected onto a large outdoor wall he went back to the studio and started writing short pieces to pair with the pictures. The results were made into a half-hour presentation by video and film artist Richard Reeves called Travel Posters @ The Night Gallery. “I’ve got to be crazy to work as long as I have on Sun Pipes, but it’s a story that I really want to tell, and this format seems to work.” Writing, singing and recording his music is really the point for Deatherage, though — the processes fuel his need to be creative. He has a special gift with music and words, and considers himself lucky to be in a position to have them produced professionally in Fort Cosmos Studios. “The studio has everything I need,” he said. “All I have to do is bring in the inspiration.”
OSPREY MEDICAL CLINIC Former patients of Osprey Medical Clinic can get a copy of their medical records at a flat fee of $50.00. We require payment prior to forwarding your records to you. We will discount your fee to $40.00 if you mail your request with a cheque in the amount of $40.00 to: Osprey Medical Clinic 12-1000 NW Blvd, Creston, BC, V0B 1G7 Former patients requiring their medical records be transferred to another medical office must complete a transfer form and mail it to the above office. Patients requesting their file transfer acknowledge there is fee for this transfer in the amount of $50.00. The above fees are based on the Doctors of BC revised fees for uninsured services effective April 1, 2014, which suggests a basic fee of $33.20 plus direct costs such as courier services and photocopying. The fee suggested for photocopying is $1.55 per page for the first 10 pages and $0.30 per page thereafter. Of the over two hundred files requested and delivered to date, the average file size is well over 20 pages with many files over 100 pages. Although physicians can only ask for a fee once the transfer has been made, the direct costs are less when the patient voluntarily pays in advance on the same basis as patients wanting a copy of their records themselves. Please note that as of June 24, 2014 at 10:30 am all requests for files that Osprey Medical Clinic has received by patients for themselves or to be transferred to another medical physician or clinic have been prepared and delivered. Once a written request has been received by our office we are required to deliver the records within a reasonable period of time, which is generally considered to be 30 working days from the date of the request.

Mayor’s letter supports society without council approval BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
In a rare exhibit of public acrimony, Creston Mayor Ron Toyota was taken to task at the July 8 committee of the whole meeting for acting without consulting town council. Toyota wrote a letter of support for a funding application by the Friends of the Ingham Arts and Culture Centre Society under the federal New Horizons for Seniors program. Discussion about the request drew mixed responses from councillors, with Coun. Gerry Schmalz expressing concern that the organization had not provided information requested at previous meetings. Schmalz said that making improvements to the building with public funds could be a waste if the society is unable to raise sufficient money to enter into a purchase agreement with the Ingham family. At a previous council meeting, the society’s request for a permissive tax exemption was not approved, but council asked for documents showing what the cur-
rent agreement between the society and the property owners is. Toyota said it was his understanding that further documentation had been provided to the town’s finance director, who was on vacation. “It would be embarrassing if council doesn’t approve the letter of support, but that is your choice,” Toyota said. “It could be withdrawn.” “Has this letter already been sent?” asked Coun. Wesley Graham. After more discussion it came out that the letter had indeed been sent to enable the society to meet the funding application deadline, which was prior to a committee or council meeting. “Then I wonder just what our purpose as councillors is, if we are not being kept in the loop,” Graham said. “In previous circumstances like this we have been able to make decisions by email, but we didn’t know anything about this.” Toyota admitted to council that it was a mistake that no effort had been made to poll councillors before writing the letter of support. “Time was short and we were just trying to support the work of a local group,” he said.
Council Briefs •Support was recommended to extend Centennial Park’s closing time from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 15 to accommodate a Teen Action Committee event. •A grant of $500 was recommended to support the Footlighters Theatre Society in its participation in Theatre BC’s Mainstage provincial festival in Kamloops. •In response to a letter of complaint about parking congestion on Elm Street between 18th and 20th Avenue South, staff will monitor the situation in the coming months. The problem might be mitigated by the removal of a house adjacent to New Life Church, Ross Beddoes, director of municipal services, reported. With the house gone, additional parking will be created. If street parking congestion continues, he said, property owners in the area will be polled to see if they favour parking restrictions.

Camping
From page 1 The practice continues despite the security concerns disappearing with the construction of an indoor aquatic facility. No other groups continue to request permission to camp during an event. Ostafichuk said that the Good Sam Club and square dance conventions camped out in the past, but not for the last 10 years. A survey of other facilities in the region showed mixed policies. Nelson and Trail do not allow on-site camping, while Castlegar, Kimberley, Grand Forks and Colville, Wash., do, with varying restrictions. Out of safety and security considerations, facility manager Randy Fediuk said, RV camping for the event could be moved to the rear of the community complex. Area A director Garry Jackman recommended that staff poll local campground operators to determine whether they typically have sufficient room to accommodate the number of campers that have been staying at the community complex in recent years. No recommendation was made about whether the practice should be allowed to continue. Committee Briefs •Fediuk reported that discussions are underway with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats about who will get the revenue if advertising wraps are installed on the newly acquired Zamboni. Under the existing agreement, all advertising in the arena area benefits the Junior B hockey team. •RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan presented his annual policing report (found in the July 10 Advance). •Fediuk reported on the status of an electronic media sign being considered for installation at a property on Canyon Street at 19th Avenue. •Alanna Garrett, emergency co-ordinator for the area, updated the committee on recent activities, which included a mountain rescue. Potential flood risk is being monitored, she said, as is the growing forest fire hazard with the sudden increase in temperatures.
Golden Life residents express feelings with Happy video
BY BARRY COULTER Cranbrook Daily Townsman
Hundreds of seniors in southern B.C. and Alberta have given the world a definition of happiness, thanks to a globally popular song and a video that was launched July 11. Golden Life, a seniors’ housing, care and service provider in the region — which runs Creston’s Crest View Village — released a video showing residents and staff expressing their inner happiness to the accompaniment of Happy, a hugely successful song by American singer Pharrell Williams. The idea for the video came from Landon Elliott, a marketing director with Golden Life, after he noted that the song had been licensed by the United Nations for the International Day of Happiness, so that different versions could be created in different nations and cultures, expressing the happiness and joy that the song represents. “I thought it would be really interesting to see how our residents and staff expressed happiness,” Elliott said. Golden Life set about securing the licensing rights

for its own video, which would involve hundreds of seniors and staff dancing along and acting out joyously for the cameras while the song played. Golden Life operates 12 seniors housing sites across southern B.C. and Alberta, with about 1,300 residents in total, and Elliott and the video crew visited them all — including the newly opened site in Calgary. “A lot of driving,” he said. The whole process of making the film took a month. Jason Beauchene, of Cranbrook’s Audiotomic Video Production, did the videography and editing. “We went to all the sites — two a week,” Elliott said. “I brought a boom box, gathered residents and staff together, and asked, what’s it like to be happy at [whichever site the crew was at].” Elliott said he led the way by dancing along behind the camera, but the subjects in front of the camera set to with gusto. “We gave the option for every senior to participate — not everybody did,” he said. But hundreds of seniors did participate. “We came away with between 600 and 800 clips,”

So we had to edit it down to about 130 clips.” Those 130 clips were edited into a brisk four-minute video — a portrait of Golden Life residents, staff and happiness. Since most of the clips are group shots, the video involves hundreds and seniors and Golden Life staff, dancing and emoting to this catchiest, happiest of songs. All aspects of life at Golden Life are captured, from the kitchens at Joseph Creek Village in Cranbrook to the senior prom at Castlewood Village in Castlegar.
“We’ve given people a chance to get up on stage, show off and show people what happiness is,” Elliott said. While the published version of the video is only four minutes long, an extended version was created, so that every person who participated in the video could have some screen time. The extended version was made available to each of Golden Life’s facilities, and will be shown on the facilities’ big screen theatres. To view the video, visit www. goldenlife.ca. The daily buzz
If there is a modern-day canary in the coal mine it is most surely the honeybee. Long ago, canaries were carried into underground mines to monitor the quality of the air while workers went about their businesses of breaking coal from seams. If a canary fell from its perch it was an indication that poisonous gases were gathering and humans had better clear out if they didn’t want also to end their lives toes-up deep below the ground’s surface. Unlike canaries, though, honeybees play an integral role in the day-to-day lives of humans. They pollinate many of the plants and trees we rely on for as much as a third of our food. So when colonies die off in unprecedented numbers, we had best pay attention. By we, of course, I mean the people who actually make laws. With mounting scientific evidence that pesticides containing neonicotinoids are a contributing factor in killing honeybees, some countries have moved quickly to put a moratorium, or an outright ban, on their use. Not so in Canada, where our government does not take kindly to science. I fell in love with honeybees a couple of years ago when I suited up to do a story on honey production. Local farmer and beekeeper Joel Comer gave me an up-close look at the inner workings of hives and it is an experience I will never forget. Last weekend, I spent some time in the gardens at Summerhill Pyramid Winery, which I visit regularly to do research for a book I am writing. My guide in the gardens was Gabe Cipes, who is one of three brothers who work at the winery that their father founded nearly 30 years ago. Summerhill adopted organic growing practices not long after the vineyards were established and, with
Gabe’s help, has in recent years gone even further, embracing permaculture and biodynamic practices. Gardens at Summerhill produce a large amount of the produce used in the winery’s
This is the Life
Lorne Eckersley Sunset Organic Bistro, but they have a much deeper importance. Along with the forests and marshes left in their natural state on the property, they contribute to a more diverse ecosystem than can be found in typical, manicured vineyards. The gardens aren’t what I have come to expect, having spent many happy summers in the long, straight rows of vegetables and flowers planted in Fernie by my English grandfather. Weeds were considered an enemy and hoed or pulled as fast as they could emerge between the planted rows. At first glance, the gardens at Summerhill might not even be recognized as such. Wild, or indigenous, grasses and other plants grow among the dozens of plantings of vegetables, fruit bushes, herbs and trees. Much of what Gabe and his team have planted is set on berms, small rises with old logs buried beneath (to create a favourable environment that holds water and provides a home for desirable insects and fungi). As we wander along, Gabe points out companion plantings, where a couple different herbs surround a tree, chosen for its ability to add nitrogen into the soil. A trench system, along with the berms themselves, helps col-
lect and direct rainwater that runs downward through the vineyards on the sloped property. Every few steps, Gabe stoops to pick a leaf or flower, handing it to me to sample while describing its food or medicinal properties. We come upon some brilliant red poppies in which honeybees from Gabe’s nearby hives are teeming, clearly excited by what they are finding in the large flowers. Between some rows of grapevines, Gabe points out low-growing herbs, some now in full bloom. They are planted to survive the trips a tractor will make to manage the vines throughout the growing season. More diversity, more value added to the land. More flowers for bees and an attractant for insects that consume the leaf borers, which can devastate grape leaves. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is far from being one of the province’s largest wine producers, but it is by no standard small, either. Gabe, and his father, brothers and many employees, are acutely aware that if they can demonstrate that organic, permaculture and biodynamic practices can add to the financial bottom line, others will follow suit, adding to the long-term viability of the land in one of the most geographically diverse growing areas in the world. While we walk, Gabe speaks only with optimism that we are learning how to be more responsible in the way we treat our land, air and water, that we are finally coming to understand the need to treat those resources with the respect they are due. The honeybees, if we could understand their form of communication, would no doubt express their gratitude. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.
Library meets info demands
Just in case or just in time? Back in the 1970s, Toyota Motor Corporation, under the direction of Taiichi Ohno, adopted a just in time (JIT) approach to manufacturing as a means of meeting constantly shifting consumer demands with minimum delays. JIT involved streamlining production processes in order to eliminate waste while ensuring continuous improvement and quick response to changing market demands. What does this have to do with public libraries? In the past, libraries tried to stock information on just about every subject imaginable — just in case someone should wander in needing it. We can probably all envision dusty library shelves stacked floor to ceiling with almanacs and encyclopedias, rows on rows of archaic tomes, awaiting that one seeker of knowledge who will discover in their pages a spark of knowledge or wisdom, or maybe just a few necessary facts, to lead them forward in their quest. While libraries still stock a wide range of reading materials to suit all ages and backgrounds, the focus today is on using people and systems to facilitate the flow of information. An example of this is Kootenay Connect — the system that allows you to place holds on items throughout the Kootenays directly through our library catalogue. Since imple-
menting this system in February, we have filled over 1,500 requests for items through Kootenay Connect, and the number is growing monthly.
The Book
Drop
Aaron Francis Ebooks are another good example of JIT philosophy in action. By working collaboratively with libraries across the province, we can provide access to tens of thousands of books at a fraction of the cost of purchasing and housing physical copies within the library. All we need to provide are a knowledgeable, trained staff and the technological systems required to facilitate access. Beginning in September, Creston Valley Public Library will participate in a pilot project with eight other libraries in British Columbia to test “shelf-ready” services. This means that we will receive, directly from distributors, books that are already fully processed and catalogued, saving us time and money and getting new books out to you faster than ever. In short, by focusing on systems and people (both staff and consumers), and acting as facilitators rather
than proprietors of information, we can provide access to a vast range of knowledge while adapting to new market demands faster than ever. Our facilities also reflect this change in philosophy. Reducing our physical collection size provides greater opportunity to show off what we have with eyecatching displays and special collections. We can provide cleaner and more comfortable seating areas to relax in and enjoy all that we have to offer. We can better meet the needs of younger generations who rely on computers and other information technologies to access information. And we can make it easier for you to find what you are looking for without wading through stacks of dusty books that haven’t been touched in years. Now on a completely different note, Creston Valley Public Library is proud to offer two mouth-watering blends of teas specifically designed to enhance your reading pleasure: Just One More Chapter, a calming chamomile tisane with a hint of crisp apple that will gently transport you from that last chapter into restful slumber, and Sense and Sensibili-Tea, a robust gothic black tea that will keep your corset strings tight and your mental processes tingling. Available at the library for a limited time only! Aaron Francis is the chief librarian at the Creston Valley Public Library.

No chance for Putin to rebuild USSR To the Editor: Peter Bulkowski’s letter (“Putin wants to rebuild U.S.S.R.” May 29) is a bit comical, because President Vladimir Putin has as much chance of rebuilding the Soviet Union as I have in becoming the emperor of Ethiopia. It is not going to happen, and I am sure he knows it. As far as the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances is concerned, we don’t need it. Just one glance at the world and we see who is the biggest violator of all sorts of agreements. Is it possible to ignore the decades of American predatory wars and regime changes all over the world? Country after country has been bombed into the Stone Age, the ground poisoned forever and with millions of innocent victims. Think of Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and others, and now Ukraine. Mr. Bulkowski writes, “For all its faults … America is a far better ally and a far better model than Mr. Putin.” I find this declaration very, very strange.
opiNioN LiNe
Mr. Bulkowski’s idea that Ukraine will be much better off through integration with Europe is just a dream. If he followed the membership requirements he knows it is not possible. Let me explain. In Dnevnik, a leading daily I read fairly regularly, a recent reader wrote, “In the former state [socialist] my share of state debt was around 1800 DM (Deutschemarks); today in ‘democracy’ my share is around 30,000.00 euros. Slovenia was prior to ‘democracy’ industrially relatively well developed, we had no unemployment, we had a modern health care system, available to all free of charge and without waiting lineups, we had a good educational system free of charge to all and the culture was blooming. There were no hungry people; today there are around 30 per cent of citizens hungry. Children are hungry. Who benefitted from ‘democracy’? About five percent of population.” This is approximately what Ukraine can expect from EU. “The signing of a trade and political partnership [on June 27] between Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova and the European Union,” www.wsws.org reports, “marks a new stage in the plan to economically and militarily encircle Russia. … The cost extracted from Ukraine for membership is vast. It threatens $500 billion in lost trade with Russia and possible bans on Ukrainian imports.” You will note that former president Yanukovych
was deposed by the EU and U.S. for refusing to sign this partnership. However, Mr. Bulkowski appears to think Ukraine can afford to discard Russia and replace it with European and American markets. But he forgets that the EU and U.S. are in Ukraine for their own advantages, and have no concerns about the needs of average Ukrainian. Meantime, the new Kiev government is being pushed by the U.S. to pursue the war against eastern Ukraine, and they are unashamedly destroying the social infrastructure. They have smashed Europe’s finest airport. They are destroying hospitals, kindergartens, schools, homes and all kinds of other civilian installations. The Ukrainian website www.aif.ua reports, says www.wsws.org, “residential gas utilities have increased by 56 per cent since May 1 this year, while electric power prices have risen since June 1 by 10 to 40 per cent in various parts of the country. … Heating prices are to rise by an average of 40 per cent throughout the country.” So the living standards are going down and not up as Mr. Bulkowski prognosticated. The only hope is that by next election, the working class Ukrainian will see through this predatory enterprise and vote for his own advantage, and not for the interests of foreign and domestic billionaires. Program helps seniors at home
Seniors have an important part to play in our communities by sharing their knowledge and experience. However, to ensure that these seniors continue to be active in their daily lives, they often need support to remain independent and safe in their own homes. The B.C. government is funding this new program and the United Way of the Lower Mainland is managing the Better at Home program operation in up to 68 communities throughout the province. The Creston Better at Home program aids seniors to age with dignity by providing help with day-today tasks so they can maintain independence and remain connected with their communities. The program is tailormade for each community. Service needs are identified by public consultation with community experts and seniors themselves. The Creston Better at Home program will initially cover people living in Wynndel, West Creston, Canyon, Lister, Lakeview-Arrow Creek, Erickson and Creston. Expansion of the program further afield will be dependent upon need. The program currently operates on a first-come, first-served basis. A sliding scale is used to determine fees for the Better at Home services depending on income level. There are four levels of subsidy: 30, 50, 70 and 100 per cent. For example, if someone is over 55, living on their own and has an annual income of below $15,600, services will be 100 per cent subsidized. The program does allow some leeway in certain situations of financial hardship. Myrna Johnson, community developer in Creston, established the priority needs according to a survey of 1,300 surveys that were handed out in
the Creston area in the fall of 2013. An amazing 1,198 surveys were returned. The seniors’ responses to the survey established their own top priorities. These were transportation to appoint-

The Better at Home program has actually been going for two years in some communities under the management of the United Way. Each community had to prove the need, keep it sustainable and non-profit, so all the money paid for service goes back into the program to help those with less income. Home repair jobs will be limited to two hours per visit and will include such items as hand rails, tap repairs, eavestrough cleaning or other vital needs. It is important that program participants will each have a consistent housekeeping person for two hours every other week. If a program participant is paying for the services, an invoice will be sent to them on a monthly basis so they will not need to worry about paying the contractor directly each time. The grocery program will involve regular volunteers and participants will go by bus to Overwaitea Foods and meet their volunteer help. Overwaitea is setting aside two days per week to accommodate the senior
participants. The aim is to be able to go to both grocery stores over time, depending on volunteers and transportation available. Erickson farm offers food for more than just one family
A
little bit of everything is grown at Cookville Community Farm — fruit, vegetables, berries — and while the owners’ five children no longer live at home, an empty nest hasn’t led to empty gardens. “They keep getting bigger instead of smaller,” laughed Kim Cook, who runs the Erickson farm with Story and her husband, Tim, and four of their children. photo by The family is happy Brian Lawrence to offer that abundance of fresh food at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market — which is the way it should be. “I think society is too individualistic and that it’s of benefit to share a lot of things, food being one of them,” said Cook. But they also take it a step farther, with one regular customer working at the farm in exchange for produce. “We really like the idea of community,” she said. “We’re open to letting that grow. It’s not just about food and money but relationships with people. … Our family is kind of the core, but we’d like it to reach beyond that, like spokes in a wheel.” To that end, Geoff Hanes, a son-inlaw’s friend and classmate — “We’re kind of the nature geeks in the class,” he said — delivers produce each week to the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market, where customers are excited to see fresh produce earlier than anything grown around Cranbrook.
Kim Cook (left) and her daughter, Megan, in a Cookville Community Farm vegetable patch.
“It’s definitely fun selling in the market,” said Hanes. Cook’s children began selling saskatoons at the Creston farmers’ market four years ago, and she added more produce a year later. She also offers baking, including bread, muffins and cookies made with local wheat. They’re up at 4:30 a.m. to get ready for the market each Saturday, but happy to be there — Tim and a son even take their guitars and play at their booth. Gardening and farming are nothing new to the Cooks. Her family had a cow, pigs and chickens, and when they married, having met in high school, they started gardening to feed their eventual five kids, and later bought the house
where Tim grew up. “We bought it with the hope of doing more with the land,” said Cook, who was born in England, moved to Canada as toddler and came to the Creston Valley in Grade 4. As gardeners, they are mainly selftaught and constantly trying new things — Cook has started a small hügelkultur patch, a raised bed with a rotting log inside to send nutrients straight into the plants. Through their experimentation — which includes an old swimming pool that has been turned into a greenhouse — the Cooks are usually eating fresh produce in February or March. They start seeds in August so that plants grow to a
decent size before going dormant in the cold weather. “Sometimes, they look like they’re frozen and dead, but they’re not,” she said. The winter crop is smaller, of course, but over the course of the summer, Cookville Community Farm turns out squash, corn, kale, cucumber, kohlrabi, popcorn, beans, dill, zucchini, tomatoes, eggplant, beets, strawberries, blueberries — and that’s just a fraction of the list. And even though it keeps the family busy, the hard work is all worth it. “We’re quite concerned about our food and the way food is going,” Cook said. “I’m interested in knowing what I’m eating and what my kids are eating.”

SUMMER DOG SAFETY Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: • On a 25.5 ℃ day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 37.7 ℃ to 48.8 ℃ in just minutes. • On a 32.2℃ day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 71℃ in less than 10 minutes.
Be a responsible pet owner. Don’t leave your best friend in the heat!
• Animals can suffer brain damage or death from heatstroke in just 15 minutes.

KOOTENAY LAKE ART CONNECTION The Kootenay Lake Art Connection runs through Sept. 2, with 28 venues and over 60 artists involved this year. Some are not members but are in galleries of members, and some are in clubs, like the Riondel Art Club, which has over 35 member artists and artisans. The tour brochure is available at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and every member’s venue and gallery. Two $200 gift vouchers will be drawn for, and visitors must obtain the initials of 12 venues or galleries to be eligible for the draw. The $200 may be used toward any art or artisan work by a member of the Kootenay Lake Art Connection. This year’s venues are: 1. Wynndel Foods Ltd., which has provided groceries and fishing supplies for many a camper, tourist and community member, and is showing Harry Miller’s rustic wood carvings, as well as Geri Gomola’s raku fish sculptures. 2. Mellowood Studio and Art Gallery, where Val van der Poel will be showing her superb watercolors, as well as other mixed mediums. 3. Stone Cold Ice Cream, with your choice of 30 flavors of ice cream, picnic benches and Dan Komar’s masterful stone carvings is a stop worth making. 4. Wynnwood Cellars Estate Winery, overlooking Kootenay Lake. The June 26 juried paintings will be exhibited in the tasting room in July and August. 5. Destiny Bay Store, which has a small restaurant with homemade cabbage rolls and lasagna. William Zyha, a retired cabinetmaker of 44 years, has some of his turned bowls and utensils on-site. 6. Arrowsmith Gallery, where you can peruse the delightful watercolour art of Karen Arrowsmith and 12 other artists. 7. Geri Gomola’s Emerald Eastcliff Art Gallery, where original artworks include paintings, sculptures and jewelry. There are a number of new creations this year. 8. Sacred Journey, with the inspiring artwork of Zora Dorval and Danielle Tonossi. Khyati Holman has her own designs and imports from exotic lands. 9. The Lakeview Store, where Melody Arnold is exhibiting some of her lovely smaller pieces. Outdoors, south of the store, a Crawford Bay student mural is painted by 15-year-old Julia Middlebrooke. 10. The historic Gray Creek Store has Val van der Poel’s smaller watercolours by the coffee bar. Enjoy a latte and peruse her artistic creations. 11. Wedgwood Manor bed and breakfast, where visitors can experience walking into the past with all the antiques and ambiance. Sharon de Witt is showing her love of nature in acrylic and Laura Leeder is showing her love of florals in watercolour. 12. Flickering Goddess and A’freaking Beads. This kid-friendly establishment is a perfect stop with Lorrie Rhead’s soaps and candles, and Laura Kernohan’s bountiful beads. Stop and create a bracelet.

The Creston Wave Swim Club at the June 21 and 22 Creston meet.
CRESTON WAVE SWIM CLUB
The Creston Wave Swim Club was very busy in the spring. Every weekend for the month of June, swimmers have been competing at swim meets throughout the Kootenays. Starting at the Nelson swim meet, all the swimmers swam exciting races with huge best times coming from Kylee Pemberton, Katelyn and Jake Wiens, Madi, Nikki and Delaney Mackinlay, Chloe Luke, Carter Pelly, Jeffery Roelofse, Sierra Simpson,
Callum Ziefflie, and Ashley and Alex Mottl. At the Grand Forks swim meet, Creston swimmers Kate and Quinn Page, Levi Huber, Sierra Simpson and Kylee Pemberton received best times in all their races. Pemberton placed third in her 100-metre backstroke and 50-metre freestyle, and Sierra and Quinn both won the silver medal for their divisions. In Trail, once again, the hard work in practice paid off with more impressive results in the pool by Carter, Chloe, Katelyn and Jake, Sierra and Kieran

Coach Kieran Simpson won gold for Div. 7 boys, and coach Hilary Legault won gold for the Div. 7 girls. June 21 and 22 was the Creston Wave home meet. All the swimmers competed in six swimming events involving backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly, as well as relays. Creston Wave members won quite a few medals, including bronze for Quinn in Div. 1 boys, silver for Sierra and gold
In Loving Memory of Our Maria If Tears Could Build A Stairway If tears could build a stairway, And memories a lane I would walk right up to heaven And bring you back again. No farewell words were spoken, No time to say “goodbye”. You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. My heart still aches with sadness, And secret tears still flow. What it meant to love you No one can ever know. Since you’ll never be forgotten, I pledge to you today A hollowed place within my heart Is where you’ll always stay. Author: Unknown

COMMUNITY OF CRESTON ARTS COUNCIL
Creston is going to be bursting with art this summer! What a treat for residents and visitors! The Art in the Library and the Art in the Chamber displays are a part of this explosion of colour and energy. The Art in Library exhibit is called “Cloth, Paper, Water — 3 Friends, 3 Mediums”. Featuring Win Dinn, Eileen Gidman and Laura Leeder, this display will fill the library with variety, texture and color. It is always exciting to see what new techniques these well-known local artists are sharing: Gelli plate backgrounds, stitching, stamping and sponging, or adding pen to delicate watercolour. The Art in the Library show runs through Aug. 30 so everyone will have lots of time to check it out. The Art in the Chamber display features the Artistic Visions summer art market. The variety of art from 15 local artists is sure to offer something for every person that enters the Visitor Centre. They will find exquisite still lifes and landscapes in oil, cunning metal sculptures, delicate watercolors and bold acrylics, mixed media and glass jewelry, fun

painted fabric and fabulous photographs. The regular Artistic Visions group is joined by three guest artists this year: Guy Hobbs with his wonderful wildlife art, Linda Bullock and her sumptuous silk scarves, and some members of the Valley Mudders with their lovely pottery. From Monday-Saturday, one of the artists will be on-site to talk to visitors about the art and to help with purchases. This year, during the Columbia Basin Culture tour on Aug. 9 and 10, Artistic Visions members will be demonstrating some of their
techniques, and we hope that lots of area residents will come to see what we are doing. The Art in the Chamber exhibit runs July 1-Sept. 4. These community art displays are sponsored by the Community of Creston Arts Council, the Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre to enable artists from Yahk to Riondel to share their art with the community. The displays are a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors to see the wonderful art and talent of local artists.

WildSafeBC has a new face in the Creston Valley. Trish Drinkle has joined the WildSafeBC program as the local community co-ordinator. Following a week-long training session in Kamloops, Drinkle is now about to launch a season of door-to-door campaigning, school programs, public displays and generally working with the public to help “keep wildlife wild and our communities safe.” WildSafeBC has found that if wildlife is kept from becoming food-conditioned or habituated to the presence of humans, then it retains its natural wariness of humans and the potential for conflict can be greatly reduced. WildSafeBC provides conflict reduction advice for all types of wildlife — everything including bears, coyotes, cougars, deer, raccoons and even rattlesnakes for those communities that have them. Drinkle encourages residents to go WildSafeBC’s interactive mapping program at at www. wildsafebc.com to see where, when and why wildlife has been seen in their neighbourhood.

Five of the coolest station wagons ever By Rob Sass Station wagons are officially and endangered species in North America. Richard Nixon was president when the last really cool one was built in America. A quick look at the cars on this list might make you rethink any preconceived notions that wagons were all “Mom Mobiles” for the pre-minivan generation. 1955-57 Chevrolet Nomad — The iconic Tri-Five Chevy, built from 1955-1957, was likely the post-war high-water mark for Chevrolet. It came in myriad body styles and was available with the first version of Chevrolet’s legendary small-block V-8. The two-door Nomad wagon gives even the convertible a serious run for its money in the cool department. 1959 Pontiac Safari — The 1950s were littered with cool station wagons with over-the-top styling. Our vote goes for the ’59 Pontiac Safari. That was the model year in which tail fins reached their absurd apex. The ’59 Safari actually had two sets of fins on the top and the bottom of the rear fenders, making it look like a Redstone ballistic missile – which was probably not an accident.

1964-65 Chevrolet Chevelle — Two-door wagons are very impractical to the point of defeating the purpose of having a wagon in the first place, but they look cool. We love the first-generation Chevelle two-door wagon for its handy size, great looks and the fact that all of the performance parts from the two-door SS coupe will fit on the wagon, making it a great sleeper muscle car. 1968-72 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser — The Vista Cruiser and the Ford Country Squire are the cars that immediately come to mind when referring to the “back backseat,” and it was probably in one of these wagons where the classic slow-burn phrase “Don’t make me come back there” was first uttered by an agitated father. The Olds gets the nod in terms of cool, simply because we love the glass roof and GM’s spot-on styling work. 1971-73 Volvo 1800ES — Volvo of the 1960s and ‘70s wasn’t exactly a company synonymous with high style. Frumpy but practical 544s, Amazons and brick-like 240s were the stereotypical Volvos of the day. But the P1800 coupe was gorgeous, and for a few brief model years it was available as a very pretty two-door sports wagon. Nicknamed “Cinderella’s Coffin” by some for their long, flat roof lines and gen-

Take our million teardrops, Wrap them up in love, Then ask the wind to carry them, To you in heaven above. Love and miss you always, Barbara, Ron, Kristy, Colin, Michelle, Deborah and Sophia.

Study shows obesity comes Energy sector part from lack of exercise of economic growth
Well we appear to have hit summer head-on — talk about nice weather for all kinds of outdoor or indoor activities, depending on your tolerance

Just ask any of us that had to sit through a hockey arena grad ceremony in 30 degrees or so, feeling the life ebb from our bodies. From the “Why don’t my pants fit anymore?” file: I just saw Neil Ostafichuk an article that looked at a for sweat. time physical activity and increases in BMI and waist circumference. In 1994, only 19.1 per cent of women admitted to not having any physical activity in their lifestyle but by 2010, 51.7 per cent admitted the same. On the male side, it was 11.4 per cent that didn’t work out in ’94, but that rose to 43.5 per cent in 2010. The BMI has increased 0.37 per cent per year for women and 0.27 per cent for men. So, you say, another study to add to the pile of studies previously done — true, but rather than get mired down in statistics and percentages, you easily can examine your own routines over the past 20 years and see if this might be pertinent in your current lifestyle. I’m not sure you want biscuits and gravy everyday with your bacon and eggs, but if you do, make sure you offset it with the appropriate amount of physical activity to keep your body humming along like the well-oiled (not greased) machine it is. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Program provides simple pleasures
S. is a regular at lunchtime at the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS). In his 90s, he is still driving, but he finds it taxing to get around on
his own, find parking, get in and out of the car and deciding places to go. He told me he eats a good breakfast and supper, but comes to TAPS because “the days are so long”, he likes to have a good meal that he hasn’t had to prepare and mostly for the company. You can usually find him at the “men’s” table, but not always as he is not reluctant to sit amongst the ladies, and has a lifetime of stories to tell. I asked Nellie, one of the staff, what she thought I should tell you about. Her thoughtful look told me she was considering all the possible answers, from conversations to activities to stories she’d heard. In the end, she laughed and said, “Well, you could say that anywhere you’ve been in town recently, you might have seen the TAPS bus. You’d have to be quick though, because we’ve been here, there and everywhere. With weekly and sometimes daily excursions around the valley, you might have trouble finding us at the centre.” Burns Park is where I joined them for a picnic one day, the shade under the trees making it pleasant on another hot day and the accessibility for those with mobility issues an important feature.

With some more able and others with walkers and canes, helping hands got everyone settled on the grassy area and picnic tables. Coolers unloaded from the bus by volunteers and staff soon revealed a picnic feast and joking, teasing and camaraderie ensued. Soon a group of children joined us with their caregivers and I learned it was Grizzly Bear Out of School Care, this being one of a series of “dates” over the summer between the two groups. Deftly managed by the staff and volunteers, the seniors and youth were paired up to play bocce in one group and beanbag toss in the other. The mix of personalities, whether they were shy or not, and the willingness to participate soon created a mixed crowd. Bystanders gathered on one hand and the players, of all ages, quiet at first then breaking into enthusiastic whoops, groans and laughter, gave advice and cheered each other on. The barriers, if there were any, dissolved in the obvious pleasure by the seniors and youth in participating together. A small thing, really, in a little park in our small town with so much else going on, but who knows what such things mean in each person’s experience. The simplicity of playing games together is something we can easily forget to include in our lives. Hans is asking for help at the center to find someone who could donate a dehu-

Instead of helping their students pack up desks and lockers, tidying up classrooms and enjoying last day of school celebrations on June 26, our teachers were on the picket lines. With some summer strawberries in hand, I stopped by a few of the lines in our region Michelle Mungall on June 26 to see how our teachers were doing. Not surprisingly, they were feeling down. They would be grateful well into their adultwould rather be in the classrooms than on hoods. the lines. Along with missing their students, Each teacher told me that they missed they were feeling sad for education. For having this last day to see their students 12 years, they have been doing the best off to the next stage of their lives. At one they could with limited resources. Liberals when Christy Clark was education minister, teachers have not been able to teach to the best of their abilities and our kids have paid the price. I can only imagine what it is like for our teachers to know they are overstretched, to know more could be done for a student in need, but not have the time and resources to do it. They know our community’s children and see everyday how we could be better meeting their needs. They know that they negotiated for those needed classroom resources more than 12 years ago and the reason we don’t have them now is because the Liberal government illegally and unconstitutionally took them away. It is enraging and clearly shows that Premier Clark’s slogans like “families first” are empty at best. And last month, the government was playing games at the bargaining table when it came to class size and composition. Like you, I can empathize with our teachers. We value education and we value educators, so why doesn’t our
government? With all its focus on resource development, it is as though the Liberal premier, ministers and backbenchers forgot that children remain the most important investment. They can bend over backwards with tax breaks for multinational corporations but can’t negotiate a fair deal with teachers? That’s not right. Someone has to stand up for education. Someone is standing up for education. Each teacher on the line is standing up for education. They are educators; they know the system day in and day out, and they know improvements are overdue. But it isn’t easy to take those stands. If you believe that our children should have the best education, keep supporting our teachers. The future of our province deserves no less. Michelle Mungall is the member of the legislative assembly for the Nelson-Creston provincial riding, and is the Opposition critic for social development.
