Dam remediation moves forward I By TamaRa CuNNINGham THe NewS bULLeTiN
The City of Nanaimo has no reason not to look at an alternative solution for the Colliery dams or give people more time to digest the options, according to the spokesman for the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society. In a narrow 4-3 vote Monday, Nanaimo city council decided to move ahead with two options proposed by the Colliery dams technical committee, despite calls from the society to look into an alternative they claim is cheaper and less intrusive. Councillors asked staff to prepare a report outlining next steps and funding options, as well as schedule a public hearing and release the minutes of the technical committee. According to Coun. Diane Brennan, the measures are a reasonable response to work the technical committee has done over the last eight months. She saw no reason to delay or spend additional money researching another option. “We’ve had two engineering firms at least who specialize in dams review these dams and come up with proposals,” she said. “It’s time
#
that we made some sort of steps towards making a decision.” Last week, the City of Nanaimo released options and cost estimates for the Colliery dams. According to the report, two measures are recommended by an engineer to address flood risk at the lower dam, including increasing the size of the spillway for $8.1 million or overtopping for $7.2 million. The society says it has come up with a cheaper, less intrusive solution for the dams at less than $3 million. City staff members say the option would require additional evaluation at a cost of another $200,000. Coun. Jim Kipp said he recognized the society wanted consideration of other options and made a motion to put the Colliery dam process on hold until September, when the technical committee could meet again to discuss concerns and consensus. The bid was supported by Coun. Fred Pattje and Bill McKay. Kipp’s motion failed 4-3, although a public hearing proposed for this month has been delayed. Jeff Solomon, society spokesman, called council’s decision unfortunate and said there was no reason not to consider the alternative, which is “absolutely legitimate.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

Construction continues despite teachers’ strike By KaRl yu THe NewS bULLeTiN
Striking teachers will not block seismic upgrade work currently taking place at Wellington Secondary School. Donna Reimer, Nanaimo school district spokeswoman, said an agreement is in place with the Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association and construction company Unitech Construction Management. Despite assurances that the union wouldn’t picket, Unitech has also obtained an order from the Labour Relations Board restricting picketing at the school. “We have worked with the contractor and the union to ensure there would be a construction gate open that won’t be picketed
to allow the construction to proceed,” Reimer said. Work has been taking place over the past year and last week Unitech brought in a 500-ton crane to begin roof removal work. “The crane’s about $1,000 an hour, so I guess spending $300,000 or $400,000 on this job was somewhat worrying for them, that we might picket it but there never was any intent,” said Mike Ball, Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association president. According to the school district, the crane, which takes about three days to assemble and will be onsite for approximately five weeks, will be used to remove a concrete roof and columns from the school’s central core. The structure will then see construction of a new interior and roof.

The school district is projecting the seismic upgrade will be complete by January 2016. The total cost of the Wellington project is $23 million and is paid for by the B.C. Ministry of Education, according to Reimer. Ball said that Nanaimo teachers won’t be picketing on the Wellington site and will only picket at select schools, including Dover Bay and Nanaimo District Secondary, Ecole Quarterway Elementary and Rock City Elementary. The union has also pledged not to disrupt events that occur on school sites at the upcoming B.C. Summer Games, which take place between Thursday and Sunday (July 17-20). B.C. teachers have been on a full-scale strike since June 17.

Art designed to draw visitors downtown

STorEfroNTS uSED to create displays. By Karl yu
The News BulleTiN
The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association and Nanaimo Design Nerds are hoping art can draw prospective business owners into empty retail spaces downtown. The two organizations launched the Storefronts Project, which saw the association contract
the Design Nerds to approach artists in the community to create art installations that now grace a number of vacant downtown businesses. The art is not only intended to attract potential owners, but also to add appeal to streets. Corr y Hostetter, executive director of the business association, said input from various people was used during the creation process. “We went to the leasing agents and the property owners and asked, ‘What’s

Policy calls for criminal record checks for trustees By Karl yu
The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo school district board is seeking public input on a draft policy for trustee criminal record checks. The policy calls for trustees to submit a complete criminal record check to the school district secretary-treasurer following the municipal election. If a trustee is found to have a mark on their record, the secretary-treasurer would decide whether the incident puts children’s safety at risk.
Whether the incident involved a child and sexual activity, acts of violence or dishonesty, treatment was received after the incident, likelihood of repeat offences, or drugs or alcohol were involved, would be amongst the criteria taken into consideration. The secretary-treasurer would make a judgement and provide it to the board chairperson for review. The chairperson would then decide on what should take place – supervised access to school facil-
ities or limited to no access at all. Failure to submit a record check would result in the trustee being denied access to schools until a check is submitted. Trustee Donna Allen proposed the record check motion in May, citing everyone that works with children must undergo a record check and trustees shouldn’t be different. School district staff subsequently developed the policy, which was presented at the June board meeting. Allen and fellow
trustees Kim Howland, Dot Neary, Bill Robinson and Sharon Welch voted for the motion, while Jamie Brennan, Nancy Curley, TerryLynn Saunders and Bill Bard voted against. The draft is now out for public feedback until Sept. 12. People who want to comment can contact school district executive assistant Cathy Kelt at ckelt@ sd68.bc.ca or at 250741-5238. The aim is to have the policy in place in time for municipal elections in November. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
did,” said Hostetter. Yv o n n e Va n d e r Kooi, who created installations at spaces on Wharf and Bastion streets, said the art adds an esthetic appeal. “It’s the first time we’ve done it in this town,” she said. “It’s done in lots of big cities and I think it’s a really interesting and innovative way to animate space downtown and make it interesting and involve the local art community ... it makes our downtown more interesting for sure.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

port authority tasked with getting rid of abandoned rigs. By CHris BusH The News BulleTiN
When four men tied up and abandoned the Kaymac, an old fishing boat, at the Silva Bay Marina on Gabriola Island in June, there was little the marina’s owners could do about removing the craft without assuming liability. Police and the Canadian Coast Guard tried unsuccessfully to track down the Kaymac’s owner, but weeks later a man claimed the boat. “A guy took the Kaymac about a week ago,” said Neil Culbart, wharfinger. “He just went on board and said he wanted it. We said, ‘You got it,’ I mean, what do we do? We don’t own it.” The Kaymac is now anchored in Pilot Bay on the north side of Gabriola Island, Culbart said. Edward Dahlgren, Nanaimo Port Authority harbour master and director of operations, said he’s glad the Kaymac is out of his jurisdiction. He deals with about 12 derelicts in Nanaimo Harbour annually, plus logs, dinghies, floats and other items. “It’s become a huge problem, particularly on the West Coast because there are more pleasure vessels registered in Vancouver than there are in the rest of Canada combined,” Dahlgren said. “When you have that number of vessels you have people whose economic circumstances change and the boat becomes a liability, so I

have several in my harbour at this present time.” Port authorities work with the Receiver of Wrecks, a Transport Canada officer who acts as custodian of abandoned vessels. When costs to keep a vessel afloat exceed its value and the owner fails to pay the bill the craft is hauled ashore for disposal. “It’s private property,” Dahlgren said. “You can’t just arbitrarily take somebody’s property. You have to exhaust every opportunity for them to recover it. Unfortunately the longer the process takes the more the vessel deteriorates.” The Receiver of Wrecks office pays a small fee to offset recovery costs, but once the port authority takes a boat it’s stuck with the disposal bill. Modern boats are built of
fibreglass and plastics with expensive environmental disposal standards. Dahlgren is currently getting disposal quotes for the Valkyrian II, a large ferroconcrete hull sailboat that sank near Protection Island in October. He also has four smaller derelicts to get rid of. After cutting out fuel tanks and salvaging any precious metals to offset some costs, they will be broken up, binned and trucked to a landfill. “Your standard 20-foot boat’s going to cost you around $6,000 to process,” Dahlgren said. “You do 10 of those a year and that’s a big chunk of money that should be going to build more walkways or things that the port does and that comes off the top,” Dahlgren said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

The province’s new recycling program will be amongst the topics discussed at the Zero Waste International Alliance Conference and Dialogue taking place in Nanaimo in October. In its ninth year, the conference will take place in Canada for the first time. Nanaimo was selected because of the proposed incinerator project – alternatives to incinerators and landfills is the focus – but organizers said extended producer responsibility programs (EPR) like Multi-Material B.C. will also garner discussion. “We are not against EPR programs but we do not feel that they’re fulfilling what they were meant to do,” said Barb Hetheringon, co-founder of Zero Waste Canada.
“Many of the programs have little re-use, there’s no repair, there’s no re-design of products to make them more environmentally safe. So we want to bring the conversation back to EPR and how it can be improved,” she said. Businesses that have good zerowaste programs will be showcased at the conference. The keynote speaker will be Paul Connett, professor emeritus in environmental chemistry at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY and author of The Zero Waste Solution: Untrashing the Planet One Community at a Time, which deals with zero-waste initiatives across the globe. The conference runs from Oct. 2-4 at the Coast Bastion Hotel and Christ Community Church. An early-bird rate of $75 per day is available until Aug. 31. Please go to www.zerowastecanada.ca/zwia14. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
Leadercast cancellation costs city $20,000 Nanaimo city council’s decision to cancel a Leadercast simulcast has cost taxpayers more than $20,000, according to Mayor John Ruttan. During an open council meeting Monday, the mayor reported the city reached a $14,000 settlement with Nanaimo Daily News for costs associated with the cancellation of the event, which the newspaper
sponsored. In addition, the city’s legal fees have totaled $6,135, so far, Ruttan said. On May 5, council opted to restrict events from the Vancouver Island Conference Centre associated with divisiveness, homophobia and expressions of hate, which led to the cancellation of Leadercast. The motion has since been reversed.

Councillor renews call for referendum Residents should vote on the water-sharing agreement between Lantzville and Nanaimo, according to a district councillor renewing the call for a referendum. District of Lantzville Coun. Denise Haime plans to make another attempt to put a water supply deal on the ballot this election, despite seeing the motion shut down four months ago. The original motion was seconded by no one when it was made last
March. Haime, who provided notice of motion Monday, said the signing of an agreement can’t be undone by a new council and will affect residents “significantly” both financially and in terms of development. She wants electors to decide whether they approve of the final deal. The district formally received the supply agreement from the City of Nanaimo almost four months ago, which would see city
water pumped to 225 homes in upper Lantzville for a $1.3 million connection cost. According to Mayor Jack de Jong, negotiations between the municipalities are back in camera. Lantzville is looking for minor modifications based on legal advice. He isn’t sure the motion for a referendum can be made a second time, but said the district will always get input from its citizens. The motion, if permitted, is expected July 28.
Beban pool closed for upgrades Nanaimo’s Beban Park pool will close for the rest of the summer as the city dives into a $500,000 revamp. The City of Nanaimo plans to shut down the Beban Park pool and weight room for more than a month starting July 27, as it starts upgrades and maintenance. The pool project follows on the heels of a major $1.9-million renovation project at the recreational facility’s Cliff McNabb Arena and will include retrofits of the pool, sauna and steam room for $223,000, as well as a $100,000 switch from chlorine gas to chlo-
rine pucks. A city press release says the pool’s pirate ship will also be removed because it is outdated and has rusted and deteriorating footings. A replacement improvement plan will look at new spray features. “The work being done at Beban Park pool and weight room is going to give them a fresh, clean look,” said Damon Johnston, the city’s assistant manager of aquatics. The pool will shut down during the B.C. Summer Games July 17-20 and again for the renovations, on July 27 to Sept. 2.

Window dressing just temporary It wasn’t too long ago that vacant storefronts were a regular sight in downtown Nanaimo. A conference centre, renovations to Port Place shopping centre and new condo complexes are helping to fill some of those vacant storefronts and remake Nanaimo into the vibrant downtown core that so many long-time residents remember. There’s still work to be done. In the meantime, however, the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association and the Nanaimo Design Nerds have come up with a project to make some of those empty spots more dynamic – they have artists creating window displays in vacant storefronts. The artists create displays in conjunction with the building owner, with signs indicating that the building is available for rent or lease. You can’t throw a rock in the mid-Island without hitting an artist, so a project that showcases the talent here while beautifying a sore spot in downtown revitalization makes complete sense. It also gives people who are committed to supporting the city’s downtown an added incentive to stroll the streets while looking for new shops. The future is bright for Nanaimo’s downtown. The long-awaited conference centre hotel is set to bring thousands of tourists annually. Other potential projects, like a Hilton-brand hotel on Front Street and the Vancouver-to-Nanaimo foot ferry, are looked upon to bring even more visitors – and potential investors – to the Harbour City. With so many projects touted by city leaders and economic development, these storefronts should be snapped up soon with businesses ready to cater to potential hotel guests, foot ferry traffic and cruise ship passengers. The window displays may be lovely but we hope they truly are just temporary window dressing.

say the least. ICBC’s latest rate increase was attributed mostly to cost pressure from higher injury payouts, and it will be tracking the sections of higher speed limit to see if the number of severe accidents goes up. Speed wasn’t singled out when interim ICBC boss Mark Blucher made the case for an increase of nearly five per cent on basic insurance last fall. One reason why claims for bodily injury, pain and suffering, future care and loss of earnings are going up is that more people are hiring lawyers. Another reason is distraction, not just from mobile devices but also more pedestrians and cyclists in urban areas. Are drivers getting worse? A recent report out of Saskatchewan suggests they are. In 2013, only 48 per cent of new drivers in Saskatchewan passed their road test. The test hasn’t changed much in the past decade, and there are more immigrants who aren’t accustomed to highway driving, North America style. If raising speed limits is a mistake, accident statistics will soon tell the tale. My expectation is that on rural highways, speed limits are just catching up to the traffic. u Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Municipality should be trying to help SPCA To the Editor,
Re: Let SPCA build its own shelter, Editorial, June 26. I’m sure there are a lot of like-minded people who know nothing about the good things done by the SPCA. It spends considerable finances to charge and prosecute the worst offenders of cruelty, something governments should be doing. Unfortunately it is left to animal lovers
and responsible citizens to provide funds. No one has to donate, but to go so far as to criticize the SPCA and suggest they use “cute little puppy dogs making puppy dog eyes” to manipulate people into donating is insulting. I hope the city can help in some way to assist this charity to get into its new facility.

The travel expenses of all councillors should be publicized, not just the expenses of the biggest spenders, says letter writer.
Re: McKay tops list of city spenders, June 26. While I rarely agree with what city council, collectively or individually, says, your recent reporting of only some spending habits hardly seems fair. Coun. Bill McKay may have spent more but he claims to have gone to more meetings. Would it not have been proper to list all the councillors’ expenses

Classic movie inspired career TJ Dawe discovered his true calling while on Vancouver Island BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN
G
oing to the movies can be a routine affair, but for TJ Dawe it was a life altering experience. “I was taken to see Star Wars at the age of four in the theatres and my life has never been the same,” Dawe told the News Bulletin. Since that moment Dawe dreamed of becoming a movie star and experience the adventures that he saw on the big screen. “I wanted to be part of that world,” Dawe said. “I wanted to have adventures like that.” Fast forward a few decades and the Vancouverite finds himself creating his own adventures in the world of theatre. “It’s me on stage telling a story,” he said. “It’s about as simple as theatre can get.” On Saturday (July 9), Dawe will be performing his newest show, Medicine, at the Harbour City Theatre (formerly the Nanaimo Centre Stage). The performance is part of a fundraiser for the Nanaimo Fringe Festival. “One thing of the things that is that I try and capture the way I speak naturally, which is actually really hard,” Dawe explained about this performance style. “I mean
a person might speak for an hour in a conversation, but to put that in a bottle and do it on stage reliably time after time is actually really tricky.” Medicine touches on the subject of the enneagram and its nine basic personality types.
original theatre work. “Once I discovered that you can create your own thing I realized that I do like telling stories and I like telling them in my own way and that’s what I have been doing ever since,” Dawe said. Since graduating in 1997, Dawe has gone on to have a successful career as a playwright and director. He has written and performed number of monologues including, Toothpaste and Cigars, which was turned into the 2013 film, The F Word, starring Daniel Radcliffe. Dawe has become known for randomly jumping from subject to subject during his performances and then tying everything together in the end. “All the stuff about the enneagram is interspersed with stuff about being a really bad long distance runner in high school track and field and the relevance of that to the enneagram only becomes clear that the very very end and that’s my trademark,” Dawe said. TJ Dawe performs at the Harbour City Theatre at 8p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door. Advanced tickets can be purchased for $12 at Fascinating Rhythm.

“The idea behind the enneagram isn’t that your personality is who you are. It’s a protective strategy developed early in life to get your needs met,” Dawe said. While Dawe, who attended attended Saint Patrick Regional Secondary School in Vancouver, had always dreamed of becoming a movie star it wasn’t until he studied theatre at the University of Victoria that he discovered the art of creating

LOCAL ART on display all summer long.
By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
Nanaimo’s Harbourfront Library is full of books, movies, computers and now local artwork. A series of handmade fabric pieces
are currently being featured at the front entrance. The two-dimensional artwork was created by Nanaimo artist Mariam Dov. “The theme is the power of the flower, which is a theme of expansion and contraction,” Dov said about her display. The nine pieces that are on display were made from recycled
fabric and took hours to to create. “It is a labour of love,” Dov said. “It is meant to inspire people and to raise the vibration ... and I wanted the public to see it and see how much detail is involved.” Dov’s fabric artwork will be on display at the library until September. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Jazz professor returns to the classroom
I
GREG BUSH back at VIU this fall.
After months away from the classroom, musician and professor Greg Bush will be returning to Vancouver Island University in September. The Jazz Studies professor took a
supported leave from the university in order to focus on his own compositions. “I’ve really enjoyed getting up every morning, writing music and playing my trumpet,” Bush said in a press release. Prior to his leave, Bush had been a professor at the university for
seven years. Before returning to the classroom, Bush will work on completing two suites of music, The Vancouver Island Suite and Portrait of Five Jazz Masters, which are written for jazz orchestra. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

faltering. Matched with its electric power-assisted steering, you have a good amount of steering feel whether driving at high or low speeds. The engine is its strongpoint but it’s not just a one-trick pony. I like the interior a lot. The steering wheel is soft to the touch and I like that you can control various functions like the audio, Bluetooth, or cruise control from it. The centre stack has charm, too. Atop sits a colour display, followed by Ford’s infotainment system, followed by the climate controls. It’s hard to get lost in its setup, and the buttons are clearly marked with large writing. Equipping the Fiesta with the 1.0L en-
gine has a $1,295 premium. What that gives you is the extra bit of power and the fuel economy savings. This engine can only be outfitted on the SE trim, which has a starting MSRP of $14,866. However, it’s available on both the sedan and hatchback models. Overall, the Ford Fiesta 1.0L has its benefits. A snappy engine, a great look and a comfortable ride quality. Whether you just drive it around the city or beyond, the Fiesta one-litre is a sturdy road companion with impressive fuel economy. Visit www.ford.ca for more information. Even if you squint while looking at the Hybrid gas-electric car on your driveway, you likely have a hard time imagining it is anything like an F1 racecar. However, the new advanced hybrid technology at play in this 2014 season means that Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway. The car power units are 1600cc turbocharged V6 engines with direct fuel injection. They have to complete each race with 35 percent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. In addition, the power units have two electric motors, one linked directly to the turbocharger, the other working in the same way that the Kinetic Energy

It is a certainty that the rapid-fire experimentation that is going on in F1 will result in improvements to our everyday cars. That’s the beauty of this highly competitive sport that is so geared to winning. Changes come faster because there’s no chance to undertake testing that takes an age under normal testing. Last year, when I visited the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do things so much more quickly than we can do under normal development processes because they have to. And the changes they make are so thoroughly tested on the track. It points two ways: sometimes what they do shows us the way to go but also the way not to go!” Hong Kong-based Infiniti has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-on-thewheel approach to his role. Last year, I drove with Vettel on the Paul Ricard circuit
team’s UK base in Milton Keynes. There we will learn something about the fast track work they carry out on the F1 cars. I suspect we will get a peek in what is in store for that car on your driveway and you will read about it here.

High performer tops price list By Zack Spencer
When the Porsche Cayenne was introduced, I questioned why the iconic sports car maker would build a grocery-getting SUV. Boy was I ever wrong. Porsche was not only successful introduced the Cayenne, it went into become its best-selling vehicle and – wait for it – I even bought one! So, with the latest introduction of a smaller SUV called Macan, there is less fanfare around the fact that it actually exists and more excitement about how it performs. The bigger question is with so many small luxury SUVs entering the market, is the Macan worth the $54,300 to get a base model or $82,200 for the turbo?
‘‘
I love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses. Zack Spencer
’’
Looks The Macan uses same platform as the Audi Q5, a Volkswagen Group sibling, but features an entirely different body shell and engine options. The most striking design element is the wide hood that folds over the side of the front fenders, making a seamless, wide stance that is impressive. The hood actually has cutouts for the headlamps and weighs only 17kg. The back end of the Macan is particularly sleek and tidy, the taillights wrap around from the side and into the tailgate with precession. It’s the lack of a trunk release that makes the design so pleasing. Instead, a small button on the base of the
windshield wiper electronically releases the power tailgate. Below the tailgate four exhaust tips tell passersby that this is a powerful machine. Inside What the Macan has over the Q5 is a level of interior refinement that is almost unmatched in the car business. It’s finished with fine leather and a simple design that makes interacting with his SUV a joy. There are several drawbacks though. The cargo area is long but the rake of the rear window limits taking larger objects inside the car. The back seat I find too small for a family of four people. Legroom is obviously tighter, headroom is just okay, it is the lack of space side-to-side that I find limiting. . Drive The launch of the Macan in California provided a route that carved through the mountains outside of Los Angeles on the way to Willow Springs racetrack. Porsche always holds its events at a racecourse, proof that they believe they have something in this new SUV. There might be some confusion surrounding the naming of this car. Both the Macan S and Macan Turbo both come fitted with a V6 turbo. The base model is a 3.0L V6 with 340hp. The “Turbo” gets a larger 3.6L V6 with a higher output turbocharger and is rated at 400hp. The base model would be my choice. Driving in back country roads the power was fantastic and the additional money could be spent upgrading the suspension from the base steel springs to steel with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) that allows the driver to set the firmness of the ride.. Verdict I love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses. Here is the issue: the Macan can get very expensive in a hurry. All of

the cars I drove in California were over $100,000 with features like PASM, additional air suspension and sport-chrono settings for the 7-speed dual clutch automatic. Having recently driven the
spectacular Audi SQ5, from which this car is based, that 354hp rocket is a bargain at $60,000, almost fully equipped. I like the Macan, but I think the pricing structure is a bit over the top. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the staff at Nanaimo Harbourfront library, paramedics, and the staff at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital emergency department for all your help when I passed out at the library.
BOUQUET To the wonderful person who turned in my debit card to the BMO at Terminal Park after I had carelessly forgotten it in the ATM. I’m truly grateful for your honesty.
BEEF To the patrons at the movie theatre who use the handicapped bathrooms on the first floor. Those of us who need them, have two toilets to use. I’m betting there are lots of stalls in the public bathrooms on the second floor. I don’t know because I can’t go up the stairs due to my disability.
BEEF To government-funded dental clinics. Although such clinics are needed, many taxpayers who have far less income than dentists are paying for such clinics instead of dentists doing the pro bono they should.
BOUQUET To the people responsible for the sign cautioning drivers of does and fawns on Hammond Bay Road and to the drivers who are considerate enough to slow down. BEEF To the people who trespass onto private property to leave their garbage in the bins of apartments and condos. Our condo board then has to hire someone to take your large items to the dump, or pay for extra pickups by our private contractor. My condo fees go up because you are too lazy or cheap to do the honorable thing and deal with your own waste. BOUQUET To Bart at Panago for his contributions for our fundraisers. Thanks to your help, we will get to maximize the company’s contributions. Greatly appreciated and the pizzas are fabulous. BEEF Very shameful that a security company does not give an annual raise to all guards and shows favoritism to some when it stated no vacation time until November. BOUQUET To Nanaimo Toyota’s, service advisor Tyler Kyle. He is to be commended for his professional, prompt and efficient service. He very kindly remedied an engine light problem for me. BEEF To the persons calling saying they are from Microsoft to tell you that there is something wrong with your computer. Computer companies never call you. These people are out to scam you.
BOUQUET To the person who purchased my bread for me at Cobs Bread. I had my money out to pay and the clerk said it was taken care of. Random acts of kindness go a long way. BEEF To B.C. Hydro for leaving trees in a horrible state after clearing lines on Uplands Drive. BOUQUET To Broco Glass for going above and beyond to provide me wonderful customer service. For a little job that I was willing to pay for, you waved your cost and told me to “have a happy summer!” We need more great customer service like this in Nanaimo. BEEF To the person who decided one cannot wear their loved ones’ medals. My two young brothers in bomber command lost their lives three weeks after each other 70 years ago. BOUQUET To Elaine and her team at Island Overhead Door for their courtesy and a job well done. After many visits over a five-year span, the company continued to provide excellent service and look after us with regards to our garage door.
School parents who made the prom night spectacular. They went above and beyond to make the kids’ night so incredible.
BEEF To the beefer concerned about children on the picket line. Your children are more than welcome to come and support. And a bigger bouquet to all the thumbs up, horn honks and treats that help us get through this difficult time. BOUQUET To James and the crew at Cedar Tireland. I really appreciated the kind and courteous service. It really is “worth the drive.” BOUQUET To Dr. Cameron for taking such good care of my mom over the years. Her two knee replacements have given her an amazing quality of life to add to her infectious attitude toward life.
concert. The pipe organ repair fund is much enhanced.
BOUQUET To the two policemen who at 2 a.m. were keeping our neighborhood safe from car break-ins. It’s great to know that while many of us are asleep, we are being protected. BOUQUET To Altrusa. Five gorgeous gardens, gardeners, sponsors and purchasers of tickets to attend an incredible garden tour in June. It was a beautiful event to enjoy and the money raised will help women, children and literacy in Nanaimo. BOUQUET To City of Nanaimo recreation coordinator Megan Lum and the leaders of Camp Firefly – Brittany, Sean, Pauline, Chelsea, Cody, Lauren and Ian – who did such a great job organizing fun days and weeks for our children who were off school due to the teachers’ strike. BOUQUET To Tim at Kendor Nurseries for giving me another Japanese red maple that had died over the winter. I had lost my receipt but you honoured my purchase. I will be back again to your business. BOUQUET To the Nanaimo Minor Lacrosse board members for their tremendous dedication to the kids and the sport of lacrosse. From evaluations, opening day ceremonies, booking games to organizing the referees, the bantam tournament and giving up your family time. BOUQUET To the staff at The Grand Hotel. Once again your excelled in food, service and friendliness. That’s a memorial and a wedding both fantastic.
BOUQUET From St. Andrew’s United Church for the wonderful coverage of the Gary Feligaard and Valdy Concert. Special thank you to all those who supported this
BOUQUET To Pryde Vista Golf Course for the passes for prizes for our annual family golf tournament. They were greatly appreciated by everyone receiving them. Also to Kelsey for cooking a ham and the roast beef.

Island Storm girls win title
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
Hundreds of medals are getting awarded, which means there will be a lot of chances to cheer this week. The B.C. Summer Games begin today (July 17) in Nanaimo with opening ceremonies at Rotary Bowl stadium. After the spectacle comes the sport. Nineteen different sports will be contested in 27 different venues this week, so there will be lots to watch. Some of the sports are ones that aren’t played every day in Nanaimo, or at least not for high stakes. The sand volleyball courts at Bowen Park, for example, are always busy on hot days but Games athletes will be diving for the ball with a little extra oomph this week. “It’s a really fun sport to watch because it’s a quick pace but it’s also kind of mellow, too,” said Mariah St. Pierre, part of the Island zone team. “And you’re out in the sun, so you get a nice day out of it, too, at the beach.” It’s common enough to see rugby going on up at May Richards Bennett Pioneer Park in the north end, but the B.C. Games will feature rugby sevens, a variation that should prove fanfriendly. “Sevens is an extremely fast and exciting game. I find it really quite fun and exciting to watch,” said David Wicks, the only Nanaimo player on the zone team. A lot of sports fans haven’t seen a live wrestling competition, so they might have a chance to see something a little different this week at North

Cedar Intermediate School. Faye Tuck, a former B.C. Games gold medallist who is trying to repeat, acknowledged that some people can find the sport confusing. “But if you know a little bit about wrestling, a lot of people get really into it, and it’s really neat to see something that you’re not used to,” she said. Whether they understand the rules, fans will see the physicality. “Wrestling is just a whole other level,” Tuck said. “By the end of a six-minute match I feel like I’ve run for a couple hours.” Even the more traditional spectator sports will have a

different atmosphere during the Games. The Island baseball team, considered a medal contender, is hoping home field is an advantage. “I think it will be a good confidence booster for us, having our home fans here,” said Jayden Marsh, a player from Nanaimo. Other sports at the B.C. Games include basketball, three-onthree basketball, canoeing, kayaking, equestrian, field lacrosse, golf, roller hockey, lacrosse, rowing, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming, synchronized swimming, track and field, towed water sports, triathlon and volleyball.

A Nanaimo-based rep girls’ soccer team took provincials by Storm. The Upper Island Storm U18 girls’ side won the B.C. Soccer A Cup championship earlier this month in Burnaby. The gold-medal match was worthy of a provincial final, as it came down to penalty kicks before the Island girls edged the Delta Coastal Selects. The match was 0-0 after full time. Emily Shires scored for the Storm in extra time, but Delta equalized just in time to force a shootout. Shires, Aiyanna Grubac, Megan Dial, Sydney Goodwin and then Rachael Baird, with the winner, scored for the Storm and Bronwyn Kirk, a defender filling in as keeper, earned the win including a crucial save in the shootout.

Pair of Nanaimo teams celebrate soccer success Every four years, sports fans in North America are given a little reminder. A reminder that, while it may take a back seat in our sports culture, soccer (football if you prefer) is by far the most popular sport in the world. So fans of the beautiful game could
revel during the past month as World Cup matches from Brazil grabbed the headlines. And they could celebrate a fitting culmination to the tournament on Sunday as Germany edged Argentina 1-0 in the championship final. It was an entertaining end to the tournament, capped
by Mario Götze’s superb goal in extra time that provided the Germans with a well-deserved fourth World Cup title. Locally, congratulations are also due to a pair of Nanaimobased soccer teams that have recently achieved success. Earlier this month the Upper Island

son Leigh, Megan Dial, Darby Cronan, Madeline Dawson, and Francesca Maestrello. Coaches for the squad were Iain Baird and Geoff Whiting, with Louise Kirk the team manager. Belated congratulations are also due the Nanaimo District Secondary School AA senior girls’ soccer team. Earlier this spring the NDSS squad placed third at the Island tournament, then went on to an impressive fourth-place finish at the provincial championships in Penticton. In the bronze medal game, the local girls fought hard to a 2-2 overtime draw against St. Thomas More, only to lose out on penalty kicks. Mikaela Hardy was coach for the team, which consisted of players Kassidy Gosling, Rachael Baird, Bella Dominelli, Alana Squire, Maireid Reid, Casey Anderson, Maddy Dawson, Sydney Wilson, Amelia Kazanowski, Megan Doumont, Grace Gates, Cheyenne Miller, Erica Vanderhorst, Elyse Brown, Victoria Pallard, Annica Crosby, Amara Sparks and
Tkia King. In other news relating to local youth soccer, Harbour City Football Club recently held its annual general meeting. Elected as new president of the club was B.J. Taylor, along with Tony Zuccaro as vice-president. Jason Coates was chosen as treasurer, and Gunnar Myhrer as club secretary. Others on the board of directors are Tony Ciammaichella in charge of health and safety, Mike Wasserman as equipment coordinator, and Jessica Kirby as volunteer coordinator. Youth soccer signup is open for the upcoming fall season. After Sunday’s (July 20) deadline, a late fee of $25 will be charged. For more information on Harbour City Football Club or registration details, please call 250-7299400. Whatever your sport, a reminder in closing to play your hardest, play fair, and show good sportsmanship. u Ian Thorpe writes about sports on Thursdays.
