Let your hair down and wig out Greater Trail cancer society houses real-hair wigs to help West Kootenay cancer patients Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser
With a few quick snips from Stacy Gach’s scissors, Joel McNinch’s curly long locks were a look of the past. The Fruitvale youth was left with a stylish and cool summer ‘do courtesy of the Cedar Avenue Salon hairdresser Tuesday (July 8) afternoon. Within the hour, the eight-plus inch brunette tresses, bound into ponytails, were donated to the local cancer society. McNinch grew his hair for a number of years “just because” he said, but decided this summer was his time to give back to the community by donating the natural (not coloured) unprocessed hair to the Greater Trail branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. “People with cancer sometimes feel undignified,” he said. “And I can help give a little of their dignity
back.” The Greater Trail chapter may not be the recipient of the actual wig that will be crafted from McNinch’s hair, however through years of generous donation from the community, the Rossland Avenue site has a room full of stylish real-hair wigs, head scarves and hats that any patient in the West Kootenay may access. “We send the hair donation to ‘Pantene’ who creates the wigs and ships them to us at no cost,” said Stacey Cassidy, Greater Trail’s community giving coordinator. “We don’t necessarily receive wigs back to our office made from the hair we donate... however we know that each hair donation will be coming back to the Canadian Cancer Society to benefit someone on their cancer journey.” Historically, a patient experiencing hair loss from cancer treatment in Trail and the surrounding
area, didn’t have a well stocked local resource to access if he or she chose to cover their head. Now, dozens of wigs in all styles and colours are stored in a well lit boutique at the Trail branch and available to help anyone going through cancer treatment in the region. “We are pleased that so many people from all over the West Kootenay and the Boundary come and use our wig room,” said Cassidy. “A person can come to our office to try on the wigs,” she explained. “Our office volunteers and staff are here to help and provide feedback when choosing a wig if desired,” Cassidy added. “Often people trying on wigs will bring along a friend or family member to help as well.” Hair loss can be one of the most difficult side effects of cancer treatments for both women and men to deal with
and in many cases hairless is inevitable because the cancer treatment affects both cancer cells and normal cells, including cells that make hair grow. Losing hair during cancer treatment is the impetus behind Beautiful Lengths, a partnership between Procter & Gamble Canada (manufacturer of Pantene) and the Canadian Cancer Society. Since 2007, Beautiful Lengths has received over 40,000 ponytails for realhair wigs that the Society has distributed to cancer patients across the country. “At our Trail office we welcome anyone on a cancer journey to try our many different styles and colours of wigs,” said Cassidy, adding “wigs are also available at our Kelowna and Vancouver locations should someone be traveling there.” Wigs are one of several programs and services that the

Without hesitation, Fruitvale’s Joel McNinch (seated) had his long curly locks divided into ponytails then cut off, but not just for a cooler summer style. Johnsons Landing survivor recounts destruction

WILL JOHNSON West Kootenay Advertiser
Two years ago, Mandy Bath clambered on to shore near her rustic Kootenay cabin in Johnsons Landing at approximately 11 a.m. She had returned to the site of a devastating landslide the day before in hopes of rescuing her cat Ozzie. Tentatively making her way across the beach, she had only been on the ground for a matter of seconds when she heard a cacophonous rumble approaching from the other side of the trees. “My dear friend had helped me get a boat. The timing was such that we had only five, maybe 10 seconds on shore before we heard the second landslide,” she said. “It all came down in massive waves of mud. I heard snapping noises. I thought it was a thunder storm or something. Then the guy in the boat said `run run run run run’. I got back just in time and waves of mud chased us out.” Skeptical? There’s video evidence of this epic spectacle, because also in attendance for the second slide was a Global TV crew floating in the water nearby. They captured Bath’s panicked retreat, the splintering crash of trees being flattened and finally the brown surge of detritus into Kootenay Lake. The Youtube video, which has already received over two

million views, shows the boat escaping the path of the mudslide as giant branches and logs bubble up to the surface, spearing the air within arm’s reach of their engine. “That properly buried the house,” said Bath, who ultimately gave up hope of finding her feline companion or ever returning home. Bath immediately began writing after the disaster, which claimed four lives, to try to make sense of her emotions and what she’d been through. “I was reliving how close I came to dying twice within 24 hours,” she said. “Trauma like that unexpected shock to the system is a terrible thing.” Now, on the second anniversary of the disaster, she has a completed creative non-fiction manu-
script currently titled Tough Days in Paradise. “It begins as memoir, but then it opens into the stories of everyone else. It’s a nonfiction account, trying to be as truthful and accurate as possible, about how people respond to natural disasters,” she said. Bath interviewed victims and first responders alike, and expressed her gratitude to people such as RCMP officer Chris Backus and Nelson Star reporter Megan Cole, who were on the ground during the first days after her home was destroyed. She said the Red Cross were instrumental and the provincial government provided support as well. She’s also been drawn into some ongoing controversies surrounding those who have lost their

homes. “There were people in Johnsons Landing who were never really compensated and are in limbo now because the government refused to buy back the land. But it’s unusable. Property owners can never rebuild because it’s too hazardous. It’s preposterous,” she said. Bath has written human rights reports for Amnesty International and published a PhD thesis years ago, but she considers this her “first book”. She said she hopes those that read it will come to a new understanding of our relationship to natural disasters in the twenty-first century. “They need to

know that this massive natural disaster was the first of its kind in the area but I don’t think it will be the last,” she said. “It was a result of extreme weather. There will be more events like this, and the government needs to be prepared.” She said she’s grateful for the assistance she received, but doesn’t think the current system for aiding disaster victims is adequate. “I don’t think the provincial system of disaster financial assistance is designed for rural property owners,” she said. Bath has secured a literary agent and is now looking for a publisher.

Station wagons are officially and endangered species in North America. Richard Nixon was president when the last really cool one was built in America. A quick look at the cars on this list might make you re-think any preconceived notions that wagons were all “Mom Mobiles” for the pre-minivan generation.

1955-57 Chevrolet Nomad — The iconic Tri-Five Chevy, built from 19551957, was likely the postwar high-water mark for Chevrolet. It came in myriad body styles and was available with the first version of Chevrolet’s legendary smallblock V-8. The two-door Nomad wagon gives even the convertible a serious run for its money in the cool department.
B I GG O 1959 Pontiac Safari — The 1950s were littered with cool station wagons with over-the-top styling. Our vote goes for the ’59 Pontiac Safari. That was the model year in which tail fins reached their absurd apex. The ’59 Safari actually had two sets of fins on the top and the bottom of the rear fenders, making it look like a Redstone ballistic missile – which was probably not an accident. 1964-65 Chevrolet Chevelle — Two-door wagons are very impractical to the point of defeating the purpose of having a wagon in the first place, but they look cool. We love the first-generation Chevelle two-door wagon for its handy size, great looks and the fact that all of the performance parts from the two-door SS coupe will fit on the wagon, making it a great sleeper muscle car. 1968-72 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser — The Vista Cruiser and the Ford Country Squire are the cars that immediately come to mind when referring to the “back backseat,” and it was probably in one of these wagons where the classic slow-burn phrase “Don’t make me come back there” was first uttered by an agitated father. The Olds gets the nod in terms of cool, simply because we love the glass roof and GM’s spot-on styling work. 1971-73 Volvo 1800ES — Volvo of the 1960s and ‘70s

Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway By Keith Morgan
Even if you squint while looking at the Hybrid gaselectric car on your driveway, you likely have a hard time imagining it is anything like an F1 racecar. However, the new advanced hybrid technology at play in this 2014 season means that Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway. The car power units are 1600cc turbocharged V6 engines with direct fuel injection. They have to complete each race with 35 percent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. That would mean your favourite driver would bow out half way through without further engineering help. In addition, the power units have two electric motors, one linked directly to the turbocharger, the other working in the same way that the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) used to do. The result is a
combined maximum power output of around 760bhp, which is similar to the output of the V8 cars of last year. It is a certainty that the rapid-fire experimentation that is going on in F1 will result in improvements to our everyday cars. That’s the beauty of this highly competitive sport that is so geared to winning. Changes come faster because there’s no chance to undertake testing that takes an age under normal testing. Last year, when I visited the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do things so much more quickly than we can do under normal development processes because they have to. And the changes they make are so thoroughly tested on the track. It points two ways: sometimes what they do shows us the way to go but also the way not to go!” Hong Kong-based Infiniti
has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-on-thewheel approach to his role. Last year, I drove with Vettel on the Paul Ricard circuit in the south of France. He talked enthusiastically about how he hoped to influence future Infiniti design and performance. At trackside, Infiniti personnel were impressed with his ability to tell them what changes they needed to make to its set up after only a couple of laps of the track. He has played a significant role in the development of the compact Q30, which should surface later next year. He has already left his mark on the all-new Infiniti Q50 sport sedan and sports car enthusiasts pray a highpowered ‘Eau Rouge’ version of the car will hit the production line.

Now if I were a betting man I would say confirmation of production might be soon. Yours truly, will join the team again next month at the Belgian Grand Prix, at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps . . . . location of the famous ‘Eau Rouge’ corner. We will drive Q50s from the south of England, through the Euro Tunnel and on to Spa. Immediately prior to the race weekend, yours truly will join international journalists in a behind-the-
Infiniti-Red bull f1 drivway
scenes visit to the team’s UK base in Milton Keynes. There we will learn something about the fast track
work they carry out on the F1 cars. I suspect we will get a peek in what is in store for that car on your
driveway and you will read about it here. keith.morgan@driveway. bc.ca

Pick of the Week:
Drives-U-Crazy Drives-U-Crazy . . . Stop signs mean stop now, not eventually.
What do you get when you combine the world’s best-selling zero emission vehicle with innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt? Answer: a Nissan LEAF electric vehicle that might just be the “world’s cleanest car.” Created to demonstrate its potential use in future production vehicles, this LEAF’s exterior was treated with a specially engineered paint that is designed to repel water and oils. The “self-cleaning” paint, called UltraEver Dry, creates a protective layer of air between the paint and environment, effectively stopping standing water and road spray from creating dirty marks on the LEAF’s surface. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
There’s little that’s more scary when you are moving briskly along a major city arterial route than to be confronted suddenly by a car rolling at a clip over a stop line from a side road on the right. The driver knows whether the car is going to stop before entering the highway. I don’t because I’m not a mind reader. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Surviving a backwoods breakdown By Ian Harwood
Your off road fun can be seriously soured by a backwoods breakdown. Before you head out, give some serious thought about what you would do if a major breakdown occurred. Ask yourself if you could deal with it on a little used trail with no one else around. Firstly, you should never go it alone on a remote, seldom used trail. This is a good rea-
son why 4X4 clubs are popular. (www.bc4x4.com) Even if you do not join a club, trail ride events are scheduled most times of the year and everywhere in the province. There is security here, with all kinds of help if you have any problems. It is also the best way to gain off highway experience. If you choose to go off alone, give yourself an out, do not go further than you can walk out and find help or shelter

before dark. Carry food and water enough in case you have to spend the night with a broken down vehicle. Be prepared for an accident with first aid supplies and training on how to deal with injuries. Always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. There are lots of things that can cause mechanical failures off-road. If you drive your vehicle regularly these things should show up when
and where it is easier to deal with them than in the bush. Every situation is different so it would be impossible to list every possible cause and repair procedure for a breakdown. Here are two of the most common types, starting with tires. Getting a flat tire is by far the most common type of breakdown. Always carry a good full sized spare tire. You might want to pack a plug kit, but most of the
tire problems I have seen are either not repairable. An essential item is an air compressor. Airing down to gain better traction is only outweighed by the increased ride quality. This will increase the odds of a lost tire bead however. Make sure your jack is in good working order. If you carry a High Lift Jack on the outside of your vehicle, check and oil it often. Another handy item for tire
work is a nylon winch hold down strap. These can be put around the centre of the tread and tightened to reseat the bead. The second is breakage due to over-working your vehicle. The weakest link in the drive train seems to be the U-joints. If you break a U-joint there is a good probability that you will damage the yoke as well. continued on page A10

This usually is not a trail side repair. Just remember that you are driving a four-wheel drive vehicle and you can most often get home with the front or rear drive disconnected. You will need to remove the drive shaft with the broken U-joint so that further damage is not done, then drive out in two-wheel drive. If this is a front axle steering knuckle U-joint, the half shaft will need to be
removed and a rag stuffed into the end of the open axle housing. Print the following comprehensive list and post it on the fridge door! Breakdown Essentials 1. Tool kit 2. Show some respect for this fleet car favourite By Bob McHugh
The much-maligned fleet car Chevrolet Impala is the “I don’t get no respect!” sedan of the auto world, if I may quote the late Rodney Dangerfield. The Impala I rented in Hawaii early this year was confirmation of the beating, while on the job, that a car like this has to endure. Yet, you have to respect the sturdiness and competence that a car like this must possess. Body scars left by a mul-
titude of indifferent drivers were visible evidence of the abuse. Although basic on the inside, the Impala turned out to be surprisingly comfortable and the biggest surprise of all was its performance. Impala offers good power, a quiet passenger cabin and a comfortable ride, which helped make the overall driving experience a pleasant one. Chevrolet first introduced an Impala way back in 1958 and at one time, it was the best-
selling car in America. The last time I had driven an Impala was in 2009. Chevrolet had given it a new flex-fuel E85 engine upgrade, so that it can accept up to 85 per cent ethanol content in its fuel. While an Impala is unlikely to be on your “dream drive” list, if you’re simply looking for an inexpensive, reliable and roomy, near-new sedan, then add it to your used car drive list. In 2010, even the base LS trim came with air condition-
ing, power mirrors, walnut burl (imitation) interior accent trim, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, power windows and power locks with keyless entry and automatic headlamps. Our Hawaii rental was an LT trim which added 16inch alloy wheels, a leatherwrapped wheel with audio controls, CD/MP3 stereo and a remote starter. The topline LTZ adds 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, heated mirrors, deck lid spoiler,
auto-dimming rearview mirror, eight-way power driver’s seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, sport suspension, electronic stability control, and a theft deterrent system. The 3.5-litre V6 (standard on LS and LT) engine can generate 214 horsepower. Its companion four-speed automatic is smooth, competent and reliable, yet it lags behind five and six-speed units offered by competitors. Fuel
consumption is still decent at 11.3/7.0 L/100 km (city/ highway). The 3.9-litre (LTZ) engine can generate 240 horsepower. This generation Impala may be the last sedan to offer six-passenger seating. A drawback to having a bench style front seat is that it only provides a centre occupant a lap seatbelt. When not in use, however, the centre seatback can flip down and act as a wide central armrest with a built-in storage compartment.

Although it is classified as a mid-size sedan, an Impala actually offers close to fullsize room inside. The trunk is huge (527-litres/18.6 cu ft) and the rear seats flip-down to expand cargo space for long items. More than enough for our pack lunch and some beach gear. Chevrolet added standard body-colour side mouldings to the 2011 model year Impala, and the OnStar system got a new Turn-by-Turn voice navigation feature.
Major powertrain upgrades followed in 2012, with a new 3.6-litre V6 replaced both the 3.5-litre and 3.9-litre engines in all trim levels. A six-speed automatic transmission also replaced the previous four-speed automatic. No changes were made in 2013, which was the last year of this generation Impala. Price Check: 2010 - 2013 Chevrolet Impala (July 2014) Year Edition Expect to Pay Today
2010 LT $10,000 to $14,000 2011 LT $12,000 to $16,000 2012 LT $14,000 to $18,000 2013 LT $16,000 to $20,000 Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase. Safety Recalls: 2010 to 2013 Chevrolet Impala: 2006 to 2013: An ignition
switch defect could allow it to slip out of the “run” position while the vehicle moving, if the key ring is carrying added weight or the vehicle goes off-road or is subjected to some other jarring event. If this were to occur, engine power, power steering and power braking would be affected. In addition, the airbags may not deploy in a subsequent collision. Dealers will replace the ignition switch. Until the correction is performed, all items should be removed from the key ring.
2008 to 2012: The front suspension control arms may fracture on some Chevrolet Impala police vehicles and negatively change vehicle handling. Dealers will replace both control arms. 2009/2010: The front seatbelt webbing may not have been properly secured to the lap belt anchor pretensioner. Dealers will inspect both front seatbelts for proper installation of anchors to pretensioners and, if necessary, reinstall the anchors. 2012: The high-pressure (upper) power steering hose
Chevrolet Impala
may have been misrouted and could contact the catalytic converter, on vehicles equipped with the 3.6L engine. Heat from the catalytic converter may melt the power steering hose, which
could result in a fire. Dealers will inspect, reroute and/or replace the power steering hose and install a protective sleeve to prevent abrasion. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc. ca

Smaller cars used to be basic, boring and unbearable. The 2014 Kia Rio has changed all that. It works for running errands and summer road trips. This is no ugly econo-box. The Rio’s look is dramatic and modern. And importantly, the Rio is stingy on fuel and is now available for the stingiest of prices -- with $2,500 off select models until July 31.

A good place to be hangin’ out with the family.
Kimberley is home to friendly, down-to-earth folks who appreciate the good things in life. A perfect place to get in touch with what’s important: the simple things. More and more people are making the smart decision to live here. Kimberley grew by 8.4% from 2006 to 2011 – more than anywhere else in our region. Families are coming to put down roots – the town’s youngest demographic, adventurers aged 0 to 4 years, grew an amazing 54% in that same period. Kimberley offers small-town charm, while affording big city amenities just down the road. The community is safe, with places to play, room to roam and surroundings just waiting to be explored. The City of Kimberley is inviting offers to purchase four lots in the popular Chapman Camp neighbourhood. It is an easy stroll to the downtown and Blarchmont commercial areas, a quick skip to Kimberley Independent School and McKim Middle School and a short bike ride to Selkirk High School. The Northstar RailTrail, Aquatic Centre, Civic Centre, Rotary Park and the Bob McWhinnie Skate Park are just around the corner. At 854m2 (9,192sq.ft.) or 1,180m2 (12,701sq.ft.), the lots are suitable for a wide range of building and landscape designs and serviced with municipal water and sewer connections. Natural gas, electrical and communication connections can be extended from adjacent facilities. Permissible housing types include a single family dwelling, two family (duplex) dwelling, or a single family dwelling with accessory (secondary) dwelling unit (attached, detached or carriage-house unit). Interested purchasers must submit their offer in a sealed envelope no later than 4:30 pm Mountain Daylight Time on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Minimum purchase price and other terms and conditions apply. Contact Planning@kimberley.ca or 250.427.5311 for a lot and bid information package. Visit Kimberley.ca and InvestKimberley.com to find out more about a good place to be.

Robson entertainer Dawn Graham has several occasions this summer in which to demonstrate the sizable talent she’s worked many years to develop. She served up a loving and credible tribute to the one and only Barbra Streisand this past Wednesday night at Kinnaird Park, part of the summer Concerts in the Park series. Dawn knows how to deliver a vocal, in any number of genres, and the story of how she got here is a compelling one. “We always had music playing and although I sang constantly around the house with a hairbrush, I never took it seriously,” says the Lower Mainland native of her early days. “I was a dancer. Ballet was my life. I would go to places like San Francisco or Parksville to attend dance programs and master classes.” Dawn was actually accepted into the Royal Winnipeg Ballet program but in the end, her knees weren’t up to the workload and she had to quit ballet. Dawn would eventually move to the Kootenays with her husband with designs on starting a family. Since 2003 she’s primarily been a stay-at-home mom. She dabbled with instrumental music as a youngster, putting a fair bit of effort into the violin and sax, but it was a number of popular singers that really captured her interest. “I was addicted to Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter, Carole King, Neil Diamond,” she recalls. “I would stage little concerts in my backyard with my best friend. Dawn did her first solo, singing Pie Jesu by Andrew Lloyd Webber. “I had seen Phantom of the Opera in Vancouver and it fueled a desire to learn to sing like that. Steady recorded practice and self-critiques paid off for Graham who fully believes confidence is 90 per cent of the battle. “I’m not nervous when I sing,” she says. “It’s just something I do. But then, I’m an extrovert with years of public speaking and stage experience. Dawn can and does break into song at any given moment when she’s at home, but she is never informal enough to slough through something. She craves control. “It wasn’t until I started taking lessons from Laura Landsberg (at Selkirk College) that I learned
Dawn Graham during a recent performance at Rossland’s Joe Hill Coffeehouse. Jim Sinclair photo
how to breathe properly and use my diaphragm while singing,” she explains, “so I can trust my voice more now. Always keen on self improvement, Dawn (who now teaches singing, as well) has made the commitment to add keyboards to her arsenal. A particular episode stands out for Dawn in terms of realizing the stage was where she felt she truly belongs. “My first role with the Rossland Light Opera Players…I played the Mother Abbess in the Sound of Music and it was then that I first began to consider the idea that I might be proficient enough to do more with my voice. I got my first standing ovation as a singer. It was pretty powerful.” Graham is now making a serious foray into songwriting as well, as she plans for the future. “I want to continue to teach voice privately and I would love to continue to teach musical theatre and dance at Turning Pointe in Castlegar. Thanks to my teachers at Selkirk, I’m exploring jazz and the blues. They’re confident that these genres will teach me to let go more. So far, it’s working!” The hardworking artist may be seen and heard in Rossland on the 17th and at the Kootenay Festival on July 26. Things are going well for the singer, who concludes, “I’m pretty confident that my voice will last a lot longer than my knees did!”

Horoscope
for the
Week July 11, 2014
Tip of the Week: On July 16th Jupiter entered the ‘sign’ of Leo (Tropical Zodiac). It will remain there until mid-August 2015, so just shy of 13 months. Jupiter is well placed, happy, playful passionate and prosperous in Leo. Yet, it could also prove to inflate an overall sense of drama in the world. Either way we can expect a very exciting cycle.
Michael O’Connor
On July 22 the Sun enters the sign of Leo for its annual one month cycle and will also form an exact conjunction with Jupiter. This happens once every year but only once in the same sign every 11 or 12 years! In other words, the last time the Sun and Jupiter were conjunct in Leo it was late August 2003. That was the year when the U.S. went to war with Iraq and the world shuddered under the reality of Desert Storm. This provides a good example of the large scale drama that can synchronize when the fire planet of Jupiter is in the fire sign of Leo. Since this is a Universal 7 Year, which implies initiation and ‘feeling the fear but doing it anyway’, we can expect examples of these sorts of themes. The radical uprising in Iraq is one example of the negative possibilities of this transit. Coupled with the major Cardinal Grand Square that peaked in mid-April and was then reactivated in late June, this violent uprising could well prove to be one of the ‘initiations’ suggested. That it at least indirectly challenges the rise of equality between the sexes suggests that it will fail, but not perhaps before causing a good deal more damage. The Ingress chart for Jupiter, cast for the moment it entered Leo indicates themes of healing the balance of power. Revolution and drama is also implied. Part of the battle will be ideological and fought on the airwaves as public opinion floods the social media networks especially. Fasten your seatbelts; we are in for a wild and at times turbulent ride.
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

You are in a crafty mood. Your focus is aimed at home and family and you want to create something new. The change you seek in the home environment, atmosphere and attitude includes more fun. This shift could at first produce more drama as you challenge the status quo. But if you take a playful approach to coax others to entertain your ideas you just might succeed. Sometimes we have to pass through a series of gates and hoops to achieve our goals. Some of them may even be outright initiations. Either way, the first of these have begun. Now you find yourself challenged to persevere. There is no turning back. So show your resolve, draw more deeply on your talents and resources follow through. Deepening your overall sense of security continues. This is leading you to pay closer attention to the details. Expect the pace to accelerate. New rounds of negotiation are featured. Diplomatic dialogue and debate will ensue. A distinct turn in what you deem valuable and important is implied. Get ready to cover a lot of ground. You are in the mood to try something new. Clearing the way and making space at home may be required to accommodate your plans. Due to a cycle of rapidly changing moods, you may also want to think twice and cut once. Your imagination will be soaring though so you could really strike gold, figuratively and literally. The pace will quicken noticeably this week. In fact it could prove to be a very expansive, uplifting and opportune time. Better yet, it will be the launch of a cycle that will last about a year. The main caution is that this expansion is not of your waistline or ego. Positively, this is a go ahead time when you could win big. Some cycles are more abundant than others, like this one. It is not necessarily monetary wealth, though it could be, but abundance can be measured in many ways. Still, you have to be in-tune and cooperate with the process. This begins with gratitude. Beyond that, joyfully and confidently increasing your network and exposure is a golden key.

Some promising seeds of growth have been planted in your public and/or professional life. By now these should at least be producing noticeable sprouts. Acquiring new knowledge, skills and tools is probable. This is also an assertive time and involves pioneering initiatives. These should bring measurable returns and a stimulated social life over the coming months. A lingering philosophical mood has inspired you to see a bigger picture. At best you feel a deepened sense of unity with others. This may be specifically true with your most significant other. This trend will continue, especially in the form of creative thoughts, ideas, visions and plans. Tune into this opportune cycle over the coming weeks. Tapping into your unlimited supply continues. This can include prosperity, confidence, inspiration, love and more. Yet, you must do your part to make room for it. This includes clearing the clutter. It may be clearing stuff from your living space, but it could include your habits, lifestyle and limiting thoughts, attitudes and self-concepts. Some promising activations in your relationship life have begun. This likely includes family connections. Yet it will be up to you to take the lead to see these developments through. Key communications and clear intentions are implied. Make plans, set dates and establish correspondence. You will be glad you took the initiative. Your world is beginning to open-up, wide. This should already be evident and be especially so over the coming few weeks. In the short-term, focus to ‘fertilize’ the ground of your aspirations. As well, be willing to plough through opposition such as apathy, selfdoubt, limiting attitudes and perspectives and any negativity coming from others. In short, go for it! The next phase of a creative cycle is getting underway. Yet, it is also when you will have to get more seriously to work. The next twelve months or so could prove very productive and even find you advancing to the next level, or two or three. Yet you must put any doubt, fear, procrastination and lack of discipline aside. Begin it now.

Places Fraser’s Landing was once Kootenay Lake ferry terminal Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Sixty-fourth in an semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Fraser’s Landing and the Fraser Narrows on Kootenay Lake were both named after Sydney Smyth Fraser (1867-1947) who bought 400 acres and settled there in 1906. Fraser’s Landing was so called by May 1909, as evidenced by a caption in a photo album that belonged to Sydney’s brother, although its first newspaper mention wasn’t until the Nelson Daily News of April 15, 1913. It was on the CPR timetable by May 1914. Fraser’s Landing was notable as the western terminal of
the Kootenay Lake ferry from 1931-47. The name fell into disuse after the terminal moved slightly east to Balfour, and today most people would consider Fraser’s Landing to be part of Balfour. The actual landing is at the end of Heuston Road, which somehow failed to be named Fraser Road. S.S. Fraser’s grandnephew Alistair Fraser has a blog entry devoted to Fraser’s Landing on his website at blog.kootenay-lake. ca/?p=3004. FRANKLIN This mining camp about 70 km north of Grand Forks was first mentioned in the Cascade Record of September 16, 1899: “J.P. Grabner returned last Sunday from a trip to the new and promising Franklin camp …”
The earliest claims, the Banner and McKinley, were apparently staked in the summer of 1896 by Frank McFarlane (1865-1935), after whom the camp was named, but the 1901 BC Minister of Mines report noted “This camp has been little known heretofore, owing to its inaccessible situation …” The Grand Forks Gazette of April 29, 1905 pinpointed its confusing location: “Franklin Camp … is situated on the west bank of the east fork of the north fork of the Kettle River, and is divided into two sections by Franklin Creek.” Almost exactly a year later, the Nelson Daily News noted a townsite was being surveyed at Franklin. A post office opened there in December

The postmaster and Franklin Townsite Co. president was Bernard Lequime, who registered Kelowna’s townsite plan in 1892 and heavily promoted that community, where Bernard Avenue is named after him. According to Jim and Alice Glanville in Grand Forks: Where the Kettle River Flows, “With the Kettle Valley Railway expected to be built to Franklin, Bernard Lequime … planned a large hotel for that area, and in June 1906 liquor license applications were granted for hotels
at Franklin …” Franklin never really was much of a community, but remained an active mining centre while the Hecla Mining Co. and its lessees worked the Union, Maple Leaf, and Homestake properties from 1927 onward. (Mining companies continue to poke at them from time to time.) Another nearby townsite, called Upper Franklin, or Gloster City, will be dealt with later in this series. Frank McFarlane died in Edgewood and is buried there. Mount Franklin is also named after him.
