Crews battle fire outside Harrison Jessica Peters Black Press Fire crews were called in Thursday put out a small fire that popped up overnight near the small village of Harrison Hot Springs. The fire was reported to be about 2.5 hectares in size, at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning, and helicopters were sent into the river valley to extinguish the flames. The fire is on Agassiz Mountain, to the west of Harrison Hot Springs. Heavy smoke is coming into the southern Harrison Lake area from the river valley. There have been 160 lightning strikes over the last few days in the Fraser Valley, causing at least 16 fires. However, fire information officer Mike McCalley said that this fire is being considered human caused and is under investigation. The fire is also what is known as an interface fire, which means it is endangering infrastructure. In this case, the infrastructure being threatened are BC Hydro wires. The fires is located four kilometres from the Village of Harrison, on the south side of the river. McCalley noted that there will be limited access to the river, for public safety. The BC Wildlife Management Branch has sent in six helicopters, an air tanker, and 28 firefighters to deal with the flames, which are occurring on “fairly steep terrain.” Residents and visitors to the area will be noticing a lot of smoke as they work to contain the fire, which McCalley said is about three hectares. “Fire crews are working really hard to (keep the fire away from the wires),” he said. “It’s very early on in this fire.” The fire has now been listed as a “fire of note” on their website, at www. bcwildfire.ca. Nick Hurley promotes safe longboarding to kids through workshops. The city has devised a new strategy to balance the needs of longboarders and the community. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS FILE

New longboarding strategy seeks compromise Jennifer Feinberg The Progress When longboarders coast down a steep and curvy road in Chilliwack, things can get a little tricky. If they stick to the bike lane or side of the road, it’s usually ok. When they commandeer the entire width of the road, with riders two and three abreast, complaints start coming into city hall from angry citizens. A new strategy seeks to strike a balance between the needs of recreational longboarders, and those of the rest of the community. Coun. Chuck Stam, also TAC chair, said in coming up with the new approach, they tried to stay “sensitive” to the needs of local youth and the longboard-

ing community. So while they still want to encourage healthy, active lifestyles, it has to be balanced with respect for all road users. Arterial and collector roads, which are the most heavily used and where traffic cannot be impeded, will see recreational longboarding prohibited in Chilliwack. That means they won’t be able to weave down roads like: Elk View Road, Teskey Way, Promontory, and Weeden Drive. In each hillside neighbourhood in Chilliwack, the plan is to allow at least one residential road where longboarders will be allowed to do their thing. They’ll use criteria like grade, visibility, and width, when determining on which streets they should permit the practice.

Chartwell Drive is one example where they’ve decided to allow longboarding based on the criteria. “Council would be remiss if we did not say that we have a concern about safety,” said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. “Kids often feel invincible — but they’re not.” The new longboarding strategy will help keep everyone safer, she said. Coun. Jason Lum agreed the approach taken by Chilliwack on this was a balanced one. “I’m glad to see we’re not taking a heavy-handed approach,” he said, referring to the total ban being considered by Coquitlam. Recreational longboarding is characterized by a type of downhill boarding with multiple trips, and multiple riders, as

well as high rates of speed. It’s contrasted with a type of solo longboarding used more for direct transportation and commuting. Longboards are wider and longer than skateboards, with larger wheels. It’s a complaint-driven process, and no changes were made to any bylaws. If a resident makes a complaint, city staff will evaluate the road, using the new criteria, and determine if it’s permitted or prohibited. Snappy new signage will go up to clearly show where longboarding is allowed, as well as where it is not. Unlike in West Vancouver and North Vancouver, where crashes and accidents are often in the news, the sport has not posed significant problems in Continued: LONGBOARD/ p4

Metro ends air quality advisory for Lower Mainland FVRD reiterates concern over garbage incinerator plan Jeff Nagel Black Press Metro Vancouver has dropped its air quality advisory issued Sunday for the eastern portions of the region and the Fraser Valley. The caution against outdoor exertion, especially for those with respiratory problems, was in response to high readings of ground-level ozone that have since moderated. The advisor y was ended Tuesday evening. Metro officials said slightly cooler temperatures have helped

improve air quality. That trend is expected to continue – Environment Canada has forecast cooler temperatures turning to rain by Friday. Haze still hung over much of the region as of Wednesday morning. Despite the end of the advisory, the B.C. Air Quality Health Index still predicted a moderate health risk level of 4.0 (on a scale of 1-10) today in northeastern Metro and the eastern Fraser Valley, declining to a lower risk level of 3 tomorrow. The air quality health index readings peaked at 5.1 in the east-

ern Fraser Valley on Monday, 5.0 in the central Fraser Valley, 4.9 in northeastern Metro and 4.2 in southeastern Metro. High air quality index readings of around 7.0 are occurring in Williams Lake, Quesnel and Prince George, where residents are being affected by Interior forest fires. For detailed air quality readings, forecasts and graphs of recent readings, see bcairquality.ca. Ground-level ozone, or smog, forms when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react in sunlight. The Fraser Valley Regional

District issued a news release predicting Metro’s plans to build a new garbage incinerator will further increase air pollution levels in the years ahead. FVRD board chair Sharon Gaetz said the regional district is very concerned pollution from a new incinerator will further affect elderly and vulnerable Valley residents who often can’t go outside due to poor air quality. “We hope that Metro Vancouver will finally acknowledge the pressure they will be putting on all British Columbians if they build another incinerator,” Gaetz said. “It would be ludicrous to consider building more facili-

ties that will further harm our communities.” Metro has argued the wasteto-energy project would have no significant net effect on air quality, because the energy generated can offset the burning of other fuels, as well as advanced emission scrubbing technology. One of the proponents, a Delta cement plant, wants to burn the processed garbage as fuel and thereby reduce its current use of coal. The project is not certain to be built in Metro either – a final site could be on Vancouver Island or near Squamish instead.

Chilliwack’s most popular trail ready to get reinforced Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Heads up, if you like to walk or run along the Vedder Rotary trail. A temporary ‘alternate’ trail is going in soon as a detour around a section of the Vedder River Rotary Trail that is about to undergo some reinforcement. Rip rap in the form of large boulders, along with new stone stairways going down to the river, will be built this summer along a 600-metre section of the most widely used trail in Chilliwack. The bank protection project is connected with the new River’s Edge planned neighbourhood being developed by Canada Lands off Peach Road. Without reinforcement, the trail could vulnerable to damage from future floods, say officials, noting

that in 1990, the popular trail was washed away. “When the work is complete, this section of both the Rotary Trail and the riverbank will meet the highest engineering standard on the river,” said Ken Dueck, CLC’s director of real estate development. The work comes as extensive site preparation and servicing continues on the River’s Edge prop-

community to the north. The work is part of the development agreement with the proponent and City of Chilliwack. The Vedder trail attracts 180,000 users a year. Some unstable poplars will be removed to prevent injury to pedestrians or damage to the riverbank. An area not too far from the trail will become a park and include native plants like spruce, fir and wild flowers. When the work is finished, CLC will replant the alternate trail. There will also be trail access via ‘green streets’ and public linear parks running through River’s Edge. At the other end, the greenways will link to a wood lot park. Follow trail updates at www. erty. When complete, the development will contain up to 350 housing units of various kinds. The alternate trail through the forest will bypass the Rotary Trail while work gets underway during the fisheries work window between now and September 15. Construction on the new trail has already begun. It will run between the Vedder River to the south and the CLC’s River’s Edge

Chilliwack RCMP were busy for four hours Tuesday, defusing a tense situation in the 46000 block of Portage Avenue. Police were called at 10:35 a.m., and responded to reports of an assault and a man uttering threats. They found the suspect holed up in a house, refusing to come out. Because the threats the man allegedly made were very serious, the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team (ERT), Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS) and several general duty officers all converged on the scene. While an RCMP negotiator tried to make contact with the suspect, several nearby residences were evacuated. “Our first priority in a situation like this is, of course, the safety of the public,” said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. “This was a very intense and dynamic situation for all of our officers involved. In the end, after several hours of negotiating, two males exited the residence and were peacefully taken into police custody.” One of the men, 38-yearold Kimber Allan Derksen of Chilliwack, remains in custody. He has been charged with assault and uttering threats.

“I think we would entertain a proposal in future from the recreational longboarders if they wanted to close off a road for a sanctioned event,” Stam said at the meeting. “I think we would be open to hearing that.” A report for information was received at the Tuesday council meeting by Rod Sanderson, manager of Transportation and Drainage, and council also approved the recommendations from the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) which detailed the new strategy.

injuries from which he recovered. But there has never been a longboarding fatality in the community, to the knowledge of ICBC safety coordinator Mike Weightman. City officials developed an earlier position a couple of years ago not to outright prohibit the practice of downhill longboarding in Chilliwack. But when months of education efforts failed to stop the complaints coming in, they had to try something new. In response, the longboarding strategy was created with a mechanism to evaluate where to allow or prohibit this type of boarding.

The Progress The hot summer months are now well underway. People are taking weeks of vacation, families and friends are visiting from out of town, and beach goers want to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. Because many Canadians have busy, vacation-filled summers, some things get pushed off to the side — like donating blood. For Canadian Blood Services (CBS), the months of July and August are the hardest spots to fill with blood donation appointments, yet the need for blood is still there. In fact, the need for blood is often greater in the summer as there is an increase in traumas with crowded highways and water-

ways, putting an added strain on blood supplies. Chilliwack residents can help relieve some of that pressure and save lives by making an appointment to donate blood during one of the five summer clinics: July 21, Aug. 4, 8, 18, and Sept. 1. Two of the five clinic dates are especially hard to fill as they fall on statutory holidays. Currently, there are 52 blood donation appointments that need to be filled for the Monday, Aug. 4 clinic (B.C. Day), and 79 spots for the Monday, Sept. 1 clinic (Labour Day). Additionally, the Friday, Aug. 8 clinic has 57 spots open, and the Monday, Aug. 18 clinic has 30 spots open. To help boost blood donations, two groups have been formed in Chilliwack as part of

CBS’s Partners For Life (PFL) program. The program is a way for people to work together as a team and pledge to donate a certain number of units of blood each year. The In Memor y of Penny Lett Blood Drive was formed last year in honour of the late Chilliwack Progress reporter who donated 125 times. This year’s pledge is 500 units of blood. The province-wide Sirens For Life Blood Drive, where CBS partners with emergency personnel, now has a local connection. Chilliwack RCMP has pledged to donate 50 units of blood this year and is challenging local firefighters and emergency medical services to do the same. Both blood drives will be taking place simulta-

neously during the summer clinics at Broadway Church (46611 Maple Ave.). Those wishing to be part of the Penny Lett PFL team and help them reach their 500-unit goal can sign up online at blood.ca/partnersforlife (use ID number INME013882) or at one of the clinics. Anyone wishing to support the RCMP with their blood donations can sign up online or at one of the clinics using the ID number ROYA439272. They are still looking for a leader for the fire department and an EMS leader to join the RCMP’s challenge. Those interested can contact Nancy Bryan, CBS Fraser Valley territory manager, at 778-228-9352 or nancy. bryan@blood.ca. Chilliwack blood clinics take place every second Monday, and every eighth Friday. People must be 17 years of age or older to donate and weigh a minimum of 110 lbs. For more info, and to book a blood donor appointment, download the free ‘GiveBlood’ app on the App Store, visit blood.ca, or call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888236-6283). photo@theprogress.com twitter.com/PhotoJennalism

Globetrotters make Chilliwack stop after Peter and Shahla left and then my finances too started to wane and so it was time for me to come back to Canada for a season of treeplanting in British Columbia’s northern forests to pay for my future travel plans and university in the fall. We remained in touch here and there, and I would catch snippets from their newsletters or cruise through their website (culturequest.ca) to find out what country they were in and what music they were recording and what peoples they were experiencing along the road. It had been six years since those easy days on the beach in Egypt, when an email popped into my inbox about a month ago saying that their journey had continued and they were now nearing their home of Edmonton and passing through British Columbia. Over the past six years they had migrated their way east across the world. From Pakistan their bikes had carried them through Central Asia, down into Southeast Asia, over into Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and through the South Pacific islands. A flight took them over to South America to Argentina and thus began the tree-year trip north cycling through the Americans. They mostly avoided the PanAmerican highway and opted instead for the dirt and gravel roads that connected the small communities. Last week this

journey ended with them in Chilliwack at the front doorstep of Mt. Waddington’s Outdoors. We spent four lovely days together, reconnecting and hearing stories from their past 10 years on the road. Many friends came over for the evenings and we would do dinner and hear tails from these people who truly are seasoned by the many flavours of the globe and reflect this experience in the way that they speak in the way that they contemplate. They have an unparalleled ability to be absorbed with you in a moment, when you feel as though the conversation at hand is the only thing on their mind and that the present moment is the most important thing. What do you show people who have been around the world? What could possibly compare to the landscapes that they have seen on the edges of the map? I chose to show them this town that I love. The rivers that act as arteries to the life of the backcountry of the upper Fraser Valley. I took them to my favorite waterfalls and swimming holes, to beautiful forests and alpine vistas. We walked through the farmland and enjoyed the summer feel of the downtown core. They loved this place and when they expressed their joy that this is in the country that they call home and such a spectacular place could perhaps even tempt them to

mostly south of the Sahara Dessert. They arrived in Egypt, where the food and water are clean and the going is easy and they seemed to simply flop onto the beach. Dahab would act as a resting place for them on their journey, something of a refuge in their Sam travels WADDINGTON and a refueling station before their voyage was to continue. Over the next three months we got to know each other while we had evenings together cooking food over small propane fireplaces on mud brick floors, beers on the patio overlooking the water, and snorkeling for endless hours on the beautiful coral reefs. The common experience with Peter, Shahla, myself as well as many other travellers from around the world formed a community of sorts. As the months went on Peter and Shahla began to run out of money, and they knew it was time to get back on the road, this time abandoning bicycles, and instead taking to public transit, buses, and trains to make their way through the Middle East to Pakistan. Shahla has family there and so they were hoping to find work for a while to replenish their rapidly depleting bank account. I remained in Egypt for perhaps a month

The human experience is an interesting and difficult one and it’s not easy easily summarized. Two good friends of mine showed up on my doorstep the other day after much time on the road traveling. I found it amazing that their travels across the globe landed them with an extended stop in Chilliwack. These folks have chosen a very interesting life path, filled with all kinds of experiences that are not what we would call normative here in Canada, and yet somehow their lives are beautiful in their transience and simplicity. The clothes that they wear and the bikes they ride reflect the path that they been on for some time now. They are a culmination of experiences from around the globe, of cultures from across each continent. They have masks strapped to handlebars and wood carved things lashed onto panniers made from their old backpacks from a decade or more ago. These people have travelled the world, seen 77 countries and spoke the local languages. They are Globetrotters. My experiences with Peter and Shahla began in 2009 in a little town in Egypt called Dahab. This sandbox place is a refuge for travellers on their way through the Middle East, something of an oasis of a community and a beautiful mix between Egyptian culture and Western comforts. Cute little hostels dot the long white sand beaches along the Red Sea, accessing some of the best scuba diving in the world. We met there on easy terms, as the Bohemian vibe of the place had managed to encapsulate both them and me in a similar headspace and our friendship instantly sparked. They had just made their way up from Africa, travelling for the last four years, through Western and Eastern Europe by foot and bicycle, and then down into Morocco where they connected with a travelling circus. Here they built homemade recline tricycles and travelled all throughout West and Central Africa, staying

R AESIDE

The rain expected this weekend should come as welcome relief after so many consecutive days of hot, dry weather. But the showers shouldn’t fool anyone into thinking the forest fire risk is any less serious. This week the Coastal Fire Centre ordered a ban on open burning (including campfires) throughout a region that includes Chilliwack and its surrounding parks and forests. The aim is to prevent human-caused fires from diverting resources from other parts of the province where they are desperately needed. Currently there are more than a dozen significant fires burning in the province, and more than 1,000 people forced from their homes. The most volatile is the Mount McAllister fire, where the blaze is so intense fire crews have had to back away from it. Closer to home, a small fire broke out Wednesday near Harrison Hot Springs. Roughly three hectares had burned by Thursday morning, as helicopters and air tankers fought to contain it. The campfire and open burning ban hopes to stem any accidental fires as people continue to enjoy the outdoors. It also bans fireworks, burn barrels and even “tiki torches.” But it can only go so far. It doesn’t stop the idiots who think a tossed cigarette will automatically extinguish itself once it leaves the car window. Or the ones who think butting out in a patio flower box, filled with bone-dry material, is a safe option. British Columbia has all too many examples of fires started through such carelessness. In 2003 the small town of Barriere was destroyed by fire, started by a tossed cigarette butt. Here in Chilliwack, firefighters are routinely called out to douse bark mulch and grass fires that not only tap resources, but could pose an even greater threat if they get out of control. There are enough naturally occurring fires every year in B.C. We don’t need to add to that number through negligence and thoughtlessness. ~ Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress

More hot, dry weather to come, climatologist says We may see some relief from the heat this coming weekend but according to Environment Canada and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), temperatures will remain above normal for the next month and probably into the fall. And, according to NOAA, we could be getting less rain than normal. So far, July has continued the trend of record-breaking heat waves. “On July 13, a maximum record of 34.5 degrees Celsius occurred,” said Roger Pannett, volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada. “The average for the day is 24.2 degrees Celsius. The previous record for that day was 33.9 degrees Celsius in 1961. After exceeding the record 34.3 degrees Celsius on July 1, July 13 was the hottest day in Chilliwack since the record-

breaking 36.0 degrees Celsius on August 14, 2010. The all-time Chilliwack maximum record of 38.2 degrees Celsius occurred on July 29, 2009, the second day of a three-day heat wave that year.” Pannett said that to date, this month’s temperatures have been two to seven Margaret degrees Celsius EVANS above normal. As for precipitation, as at July 16 we’ve only had 2.4 mm rain, on track to possibly match last year’s July precipitation at 5.0 mm. “The average July rainfall is 46 mm on six days,” said Pannett, adding that Chilliwack weather records were started in 1881. Over half of the province has

been under the hot spell due partly to really hot air being pumped from the southwestern United States under a strong high ridge. All this heat and dryness spurred an air quality advisory for the Fraser Valley due to high concentrations of ground-level ozone that have persisted for several days. Then of course, there are wildfires and from April 1 to July 16 there have been 564. The 10-year average taken from 2003 to 2012 is 1,908 fires, 38.6 per cent caused by people and 61.4 per cent caused by lightning with 2009 having the most number of wild fires at 3,064. Smoke from wildfires blazing in NWT and northern Alberta is already clouding the skies in northeastern U.S.A. This weekend though might bring some relief with a bit of

rain. “The situation now is the high ridge in western Canada and it’s not going to go away,” said David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada. “There will be some precipitation this weekend but not much. This is the dry season. Our models show that what you see is what you are going to get. Early spring we predicted it would be a warmer than normal summer. There has also been so little precipitation. What we are showing is that, after a little change this weekend, later next week and into August it’s going to be dryer and warmer. It’s as though you are not getting enough weather. You should be getting precipitation but it’s down and continues to stay down. What are different are the warmer temperatures.” Phillips said that they are fairly

sure an El Nino event will materialize 60 per cent in August and 80 to 90 per cent in late fall and early winter. According to NOAA, during June this year above-average sea surface temperatures were prominent in the eastern equatorial Pacific although there has been some weakening since. It is the warm sea surface temperatures that influence the El Nino current bringing worldwide weather changes. Phillips warned that a hot dry summer this year followed by an El Nino event in the winter could threaten water supply issues in coming years. “A year from now if El Nino materializes you could be into a bit of a water shortage,” said Phillips. “The atmosphere will suck up any moisture which could interfere with water supply and power production.”

Enjoy the Vedder River safely This letter is written in reply to the article “Young mom grateful after being plucked from river” (Chilliwack Progress, July 16). For the last 10 years, I have been swimming in, around, and have even swam across the Vedder River several times, and as someone who has plucked people from that river before, I still have no clue why people have no respect for the dangers that river has. However, as someone who loves that river and wants more people to enjoy it safely, here are some things to know before you go swimming or tubing in it. Rule 1 - If you’re going tubing, wear a life jacket. This can mean the difference between someone pulling you alive from a logjam

with a few cuts, or an RCMP dive team pulling you out of a logjam, and not being able to save you from drowning because you’ve been under that jam for an hour. Remember the young lady (who was a friend of mine in middle school) from 2008 who drowned in the Vedder River this way. Rule 2 - If you get caught in the rapids, whether it be from falling in or failing to cross the river, don’t panic. Rule 3 - If you don’t intend on wearing a life jacket (and even if you do) and you fall into the water, get on your back, and spread your arms and legs. You will float, and you’ll be able to steer, as well as use your feet to push stray logs and rocks away from you, therefore making your

chances that much better. Rule 4 - Don’t try to get out of the water near the dike’s big rocks or logjams. That is just asking to either break your leg or get caught up in one. Rule 5 - When you get out of the water, make sure you let anyone who saw you floating in it know you’re OK, because the last thing you want them to do is call emergency services when you don’t need it. I really hope everyone who goes to the Vedder River, whether it be for tubing, swimming, sunbathing, or anything else, that they do it safely and have a safe summer. Phil Mante

Watch for deer on Ryder Lake roads Ryder Lake residents are being warned about the presence of bears in their neighbourhood and to take necessary steps to prevent them from getting too close for comfort. In the same vein, I would also like to caution drivers on Mountain Park Drive

from an influx of deer that are settling down quite nicely in neighbourhood yards and gardens. The problem is that at the top of the Drive in the curve, there is a cluster of hidden driveways that give the deer easy access to the front and back of properties,

as well as for them to cross over from one side of the road to the other. So, please all users of Mountain Park Drive, beware at this time you may suddenly encounter a deer or two coming out onto the road, especially early morning and evening. A col-

lision with such a creature would be devastating for both parties. While many people locate to Chilliwack to enjoy the luxury of living in and with nature, we must also show respect for the beautiful wildlife that goes along with that privilege. Ann Muehlebach, Chilliwack

‘Creationism’ should get equal time in school Why is Creationism not equally taught as the Theory of Evolution? When I look at our country’s Christian heritage I find it quite disturbing how most people have accepted the fact that creationism is hardly (if at all) taught at our public schools. Is Darwinian evolution perhaps no longer just a theory? Growing up in a non-religious, science believing family, I was faced with questions about evolution and the Big Bang when studying microbiology and biochemistry. What came first, the egg or the chicken? How did the info encoded in DNA get into the genome? It takes a flagellum to make a flagellum. Which probability is greater: for 20 essential amino acids to, first of all, form

from nothing, and then line up perfectly, needing the perfect, stable environment to do so in order to form just a simple protein, or: for a pizza to evolve from all the ingredients scattered in a large room? Let’s say we give these processes a few million years. Shouldn’t the pizza win, as we already used the predetermined ingredients, whereby giving the pizza a huge head-start? And what is the probability for a bird to evolve from a crocodile? Is it just a matter of time? According to Darwin’s “Origin of Species”, there should be partially-evolved humans somewhere. In my opinion, it clearly takes more faith to believe in unproven, scientific theories than to believe in a creator as all of our

daily experiences teach us that things do not just exist in and of themselves. Someone came up with an idea, created a blue-print and then made that thing, whatever it may be. According to the Bible, God is not interested in religion, instead He is all about a personal relationship with us. What I find most compelling about our Creator is that He will actually reveal Himself to us if we really care to seek Him. Just because man-made religion has, and still is, accounting for many atrocities in the world, not to offer our children a true choice between the two main ideas of our very existence is indeed depriving them of the freedom of choice. relocate here after their trip is concluded in two months time, I must confess the pride for Chilliwack that flashed through me. You might ask how they made their money and how they afforded this extravagant trip when most people can only dream of one or two week long vacations. Extended durations of travel are unique amongst the norm of life here in Canada. Peter and Shahla don’t do normal. That is not what they strive for,

and in fact they sometimes actively strive against it if only to prove that it is possible; if only to show people that another way is available and that a life of richness, fulfillment and of journey and adventure is there for the taking. Their current bicycles show the wear of 30,000 km of globe-trotting and their panniers are far from waterproof and are strapped onto their bikes with ratchet straps and bungee cords and whatever else they could find on their road of life as they have been carried across the faces of

They stopped in Norway for an extended period of time and worked in Pakistan for six months, in Australia for six months, in New Zealand for nine months, which will fund them until they arrive “home in Edmonton in September. and bracelets and beautiful art crafts and selling them at market squares. Peter is a talented musician and busks on the street with this homemade instrument that he calls the Mosquito, fashioned from ABS pipe it has strings and is played with a violin bow. The music he creates is beautiful and yet somewhat mystic, as it seems to be a fusion of vibes from around the world. During their stay Peter played for me his favourite song that is perhaps best described as an Indian Sitar fused with West Coast Canadian First Nations vocals. His music, like him, is unique and incredible. The path from Chilliwack will now carry them through Southwest British Columbia on some of the old Kettle Valley Railway line in attempts to ride through on the southern fringes of our province into the Kooteneys, through

in to the Rockies, into Alberta and up the Icefield Parkway back out into Edmonton. I am glad that they stopped in to Chilliwack and that I had the chance to show them our beautiful piece of the world. Their trip inspires me, it is proof that something of this kind can be, and is being done and that life can be so rich! I wonder now how they will craft a life in this country again? How will they adjust to not being in a new place every few days? However I know that whatever life throws at them they will create a grand adventure out of it. Progress Katie

Bartel 604.702.5575 • kbartel@theprogress.com

Life’s a playground for Joe Krajnyak Katie Bartel The Progress “Joe’s retiring? What?” Tell anyone in the Promontory community that beloved school principal Joe Krajnyak is retiring and they’ll likely screw their face up in wonderment. But he’s not old enough to retire, they’ll say. The fresh-faced, speed-walking, speed-talking principal of Promontory elementary assures us he is, in fact, of retirement age. While he won’t share his age – that’s locked in a vault, he says – he recites a line he’s been using for years. “I’m young enough to act like a kid, old enough to know when not too, and spirited enough not to care.” And it’s that joie de vivre that has made every school Krajnyak’s headed a fun and energetic place to be. His career has essentially been a playground. “I’m lucky because I’ve never gone to work,” he says. “Every morning, I go to school. “I’ve always been the biggest Grade 6 kid.” Krajnyak started his career up north as a Grade 7 teacher at a small school in Stewart, B.C.. He had 17 students that first year. It was a class he was warned was difficult, and had gone through teachers like McDonald’s goes through ketchup. It was a challenge Krajnyak took on willingly. His first day, he jumped on the desks during a mapping lesson and started drawing on a large piece of paper. When the paper ran out, he drew on the walls. The students mouths were agape. “I had a great time with them because I went in as a big kid,” he says. Krajnyak came to Chilliwack in 1981; his first gig was at Central Elementary. Over the last 33 years, he’s also worked at Watson, Yarrow, Vedder, Little Mountain, Cultus Lake, East Chilliwack, Robertson, and Promontory. He became a principal in 1987. “Elementary school is my place,” he says. “The kids are so

full of energy. We come here to play. We’re dealing with five-yearolds and what do five-year-olds do? They play. What do 11-year-olds do? They play. “Yes, we have to infuse learning in there, but it’s elementary school, it should be fun.” Krajnyak points to his black T-shirt that reads ‘I’m never growing up’. “That’s who I am,” he says. “I’m a little crazy at times. I’m unconventional. I have me-diagnosed ADHD. “And it was good news for me that people thought that was okay.” Krajnyak can’t remember the exact year he ditched the professional suit and tie look, but recalls the exact moment. It was when he was teaching

at Robertson elementary, one of Chilliwack’s inner-city schools. Rather than sit behind his desk during recess and lunch, he was almost always out on the fields, often playing soccer or football with the kids. One day Krajnyak slid through the mud. “There was a collective gasp,” he recalls. “I had mud up and down, all over my suit.” And he couldn’t call home for a change of clothes; he’d long lectured his students that these were muddy sports, if they fall, they don’t call home. And so, he marched into his class and announced: “I got muddy. I’m not calling home. That’s how it’s got to be.” From that day, he’s worn T-shirts.

But not just any T-shirts, fun T-shirts. Shirts with playful sayings and familiar cartoon characters, shirts that got kids giggling, that got them thinking. At his retirement last month, 50 were hung for all to see. “I’ve probably got another 25 at home,” he laughs. Krajnyak has been at Promontory for the last seven years. The children who started kindergarten his first year graduated out this year. With an average of 560 students each year, it was the largest school he’d ever worked at for the longest period of time. “It matched my personality or my personality matched it,” he says. “It’s a big school, it’s busy, there’s lots of things going on. was always running around.” Just the way he liked it. Krajnyak has loved his career from the first moment he walked through that classroom door in Stewart. He still loves it. Why exit now? “That’s the point,” he says, “I still love what I’m doing. “The last thing I wanted people to say was that he should have gone three years ago. I didn’t want to be pushed onto the iceberg, I wanted to be stepping onto it.” And just like a kid, Krajnyak plans to walk into the retirement sunset with no plans whatsoever. “Kids don’t make plans,” he smirks. “They just let things happen.”

The engine is its strongpoint but it’s not just a one-trick pony. I like the interior a lot. The steering wheel is soft to the touch and I like that you can control various functions like the audio, Bluetooth, or cruise control from it. The centre stack has charm, too. Atop sits a colour display, followed by Ford’s infotainment system, followed by the climate controls. It’s hard to get lost in its setup, and the buttons are clearly marked with large writing. However, it’s available on both the sedan and hatchback models. Overall, the Ford Fiesta 1.0L has its benefits. A snappy engine, a great look and a comfortable ride quality. Good looking, high performer tops the price list too When the Porsche Cayenne was introduced, I questioned why the iconic sports car maker would build a grocerygetting SUV. Boy was I ever wrong. Porsche was not only successful intro-

duced the Cayenne, it went into become its best-selling vehicle and – wait for it – I even bought one! So, with the latest introduction of a smaller SUV called Macan, there is less fanfare around

the fact that it actually exists and more excitement about how it performs. The bigger question is with so many small luxury SUVs entering the market, is the Macan worth the $54,300 to

get a base model or $82,200 for the turbo? Looks: The Macan uses same platform as the Audi Q5, a Volkswagen Group sibling, but features an entirely different body shell and engine op-

tions. The most striking design element is the wide hood that folds over the side of the front fenders, making a seamless, wide stance that is impressive. The hood actually has cutouts for the headlamps and weighs

only 17kg. “Side Blades” decorate the lower body of the Macan and can be ordered in black, a matching body colour or carbon fibre. The back end of the Macan is particularly sleek and tidy, the

I love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses.

taillights wrap around from the side and into the tailgate with precession. It’s the lack of a trunk release that makes the design so pleasing. Instead, a small button on the base of the windshield wiper that electronically releases the power tailgate. Below the tailgate four exhaust tips tell passersby that this is a powerful machine. Inside: What the Macan has over the Q5 is a level of interior refinement that is almost unmatched in the car business. It’s finished with continued on page 25

At trackside, Infiniti personnel were impressed with his ability to tell them what changes they needed to make to its set up after only a couple of laps of the track. He has played a significant role in the development of the compact Q30, which should surface later next year. He has already left his mark on the all-new Infiniti Q50 sport sedan and sports car enthusiasts pray a high-powered ‘Eau Rouge’ version of the car will hit the production line. Now if I were a betting man I would say confirmation of production might be soon. Yours truly, will join the team again next month at the Belgian Grand Prix, at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps . . . . location of the famous ‘Eau Rouge’ corner. We will drive Q50s from the south of England, through the Euro Tunnel and on to Spa. Immediately prior to the race weekend, yours truly will join international journalists in a behind-the-scenes visit to the team’s UK base in Milton Keynes. There we will learn something about the fast track work they carry out on the F1 cars. I suspect we will get a peek in what is in store for that car on your driveway and you will read about it here. keith.morgan@driveway.bc.ca

QUALITY DOESN’T

Nice, but pricey ride continued from page 24

fine leather and a simple design that makes interacting with his SUV a joy. There are several drawbacks though. The cargo area is long but the rake of the rear window limits taking larger objects inside the car. The back seat I find too small for a family of four people. Since I own a Cayenne, I have a great perspective on the amount of room this Macan offers. Legroom is obviously tighter, headroom is just okay, it is the lack of space side-to-side that I find limiting. The Cayenne is a perfect family choice, the Macan I believe is suited for a single person or active professional couple. Not to say it couldn’t be use for family duty, it just wouldn’t be my choice. Drive: The launch of the Macan in California provided a route that carved through the mountains outside of Los Angeles on the way to Willow Springs racetrack. Porsche always holds its events at a racecourse, proof that they believe they have something in this new SUV. There might be some confusion surrounding the naming of this car. Both the Macan S and Macan Turbo both come fitted with a V6 turbo. The base model is a 3.0L V6 with 340hp. The

The bigger question is the Macan worth the $54,300 to get a base model or $82,200 for the turbo? “Turbo” gets a larger 3.6L V6 with a higher output turbocharger and is rated at 400hp. The base model would be my choice. Driving in back country roads the power was fantastic and the additional money could be spent upgrading the suspension from the base steel springs to steel with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) that allows the driver to set the firmness of the ride. This upgrade was noticeable on the track. The turbo comes standard with this setup but the added power and expense was only really noticeable when the Macan was pushed very hard around the racetrack. For regular commuting the S is just fine. Verdict: I love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses. Here is the issue; the

Macan can get very expensive in a hurry. All of the cars I drove in California were over $100,000 with features like PASM, additional air suspension and sport-chrono settings for the 7-speed duel clutch automatic. When I configure a base S with the features I would want like navigation, PASM, front and rear parking sensors, bigger wheels, Bose stereo and a few other odds and ends, comes to almost $75,000, never mind the $82,200 starting price of the turbo. Having recently driven the spectacular Audi SQ5, from which this car is based, that 354hp rocket is a bargain at $60,000, almost fully equipped. I like the Macan, and they will sell every one to people who want to have the latest, but I think the pricing structure is a bit over the top. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Chilliwack was one of the real estate hotspots in June, says the British Columbia Real Estate Association. According to the BCREA, residential sales recorded by the Multiple Listing Service rose 33 per cent in Chilliwack compared to the same month last year. Overall in B.C., a total of 8,989 residential sales were recorded by the service in June, up 24.9 per cent from June 2013. Total sales dollar volume was $5 billion, an increase of 30.5 per cent compared to a year ago. The average MLS residential price in the province rose to $556,977,

up 4.5 per cent from the same month last year. “Home sales finished the second quarter on an upward trend,” said Cameron Muir, BCREA chief economist. “The increase in provincial housing demand was broad-based, with the largest year-over-year increases occurring in the Okanagan, the Kootenays and Chilliwack.” Home sales climbed 46 per cent in the South Okanagan and nearly 30 per cent in the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board area. In addition, home sales rose 36 per cent in the

Kootenays and 33 per cent in Chilliwack. “Market conditions also continued to improve, with the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland even flirting with sellers’ market conditions,” added Muir. During the half of the year, B.C.’s residential sales dollar volume was up nearly 26.8 per cent to $23.8 billion, compared to the same period last year. Residential unit sales were up 18.5 per cent to 41,883 units, while the average MLS residential price was up seven per cent at $568,499.

Test of trust at BC Summer Games Eric J. Welsh, The Progress They’ll never get the limelight they truly deserve. They’ll toil in obscurity, loved, respected and recognized only by those who are closest to them. When the medals are handed out, they’ll be somewhere else, perhaps munching on hay. They are the horses, and they don’t particularly care for glory. All they care about is whether they get their food, exercise and a little care and attention. But when two Chilliwack girls enter the arena for the BC Winter Games vaulting competition this weekend in Nanaimo, the horses will play an essential role. “When the horse is moving in a canter, he’s moving like this,” said Deseray Smith, moving her hand in a rhythmic up-and-down fashion. “You have to be like that too, be connected with the horse. Be one with the horse. You get the wind in your hair and you feel free.” Vaulting is a sport in which athletes perform gymnastics/acrobatics on horseback. As the horse moves around the arena, Smith and Hannah Campbell will whirl and twirl, flinging their legs and arms this way and that. All the while, they’ll be trusting their horse to not turn suddenly, rear back or do anything else unexpected. Smith is lucky to be riding Cetoma. Though she now trains in Aldergrove, the Mt. Slesse middle school student used to train at Chilliwack’s Bit

Crazy Boarding Stable, and knows this horse well. “He’s my buddy, the first horse I ever vaulted on,” she said. “I learned all my new moves with him. He can be a bit of a goof sometimes.” Every horse has its personality quirks, just like a human. Cetoma is friendly, patient and calm, which is great for vaulting. “He’s got these big, big lips and whenever you feed him a treat he sucks your whole hand in there,” Deseray laughed. “Whenever you tickle his lips he smiles. It’s so funny. Hilarious.” Before a competition, they’ll share some relaxing time doing light practice drills. When it’s game time she’ll watch as his ears perk up as he gets serious. “He knows when it’s time,” Smith said. “He knows, ‘OK. I’ve really got to smarten up and be really good for this.’ When he gets into the arena and sees all the people, he becomes a lot smoother than he usually is.” After a competition, Smith will spend a few more quiet moments with him. “I’ll tell him he’s a good boy and scratch behind his ears, because horses can’t reach their ears,” she said. “I’ll rub his chest because he can’t reach that either, and he’ll stretch his neck up really tall and do that lip thing.” Smith goes to Nanaimo as a wildcard entry. She narrowly missed qualifying as one of the top two in her zone, and was supremely disappointed when she thought she’d missed out.

“I was really disappointed, but then my uncles and aunts came over for a family dinner,” Smith said. “And my mom was keeping it a surprise that I’d been picked in a draw to go as a wildcard entry. I texted all my friends right after saying, ‘I made it! I made it!’” Campbell, the second local at the Games, had a similar reaction when she got the good news. In an odd twist, she’s competing for the Thompson-Okanagan zone, listed as a Merritt native because her dad lives there. But she trains at Crazy Bit. Campbell has a trickier task than Smith. Both will ride in the level-D canter division, but Campbell will compete on at least one semiunfamiliar horse. Cetoma and Tristan are the familiar ones — Campbell describes Tristan as stubborn, and a bit rude. “He used to be the boss of all the horses, but now Promise is,” she laughed. Promise is another Crazy Bit regular, but Campbell’s only been on that horse a couple times. Like Cetoma, Promise has a rep for being calm and cooperative. “I’ve heard we’ll have a pretty good warmup, and I think it’ll be fine,” Campbell said. Like Smith, Campbell was super excited when she found she’d made the BC Summer Games. “I jumped around a lot,” she smiled. So much so that her mom worried she might injure herself. “It’s a really big achievement,” Campbell said. “And it took a lot of practices

and competitions to get it.” Both girls are looking forward to the pomp and pageantry of the Games, which include more than 2,500 athletes ages 11-18, competing in 19 different sports. But it’s a double-

edged sword. Maintaining proper focus with all the hoopla that surrounds them will be difficult. “Before I compete I close my eyes and think about what I have to do,” Campbell said. “I’ll really, really have to concentrate because

there’s going to be a lot going on.” Each girl has different expectations heading into the Games. Smith carries a bit of a chip on her shoulder, wanting to prove that she’s more than a wildcard. Campbell is happy to

intention to change, but not right away. They might have mixed feeling about exercise, and low confidence that change is possible. If you are in the contemplation stage, now is the time to do a ‘pros and cons’ list. In one column, write down all the reasons why you want to get into better shape. It might be to feel amazing in a bikini on your Mexican vacation, to reduce your blood pressure, or to set a good example for your children. Writing your reasons is a great exercise to do, whether you’re thinking about exercising, or have already started. I regularly use this exercise with my clients to ensure their continued motivation and success. In another column, write down all the reasons why you should not start exercising and eating better. For example, a few reasons might be that you will need to pack your exercise gear to work, you’ll be home a half hour later at the end of the day or have to shop for produce more often. Compare both columns and decide whether the pros outweigh the cons. Consider both numbers of pros and cons and the importance of your reasons. If your pros outweigh your cons, congratulate yourself. You have progressed to the next stage of change! The third stage of change is ‘Preparation.’ P r e p a r a t i o n describes one who may have tried to change in the past year, may already be making small changes, or intends to change in the next few weeks. If you are in the preparation stage, focus on

the reasons why you want to change, and set a goal. For tips on how to set goals, go to ascendfitnesscoaching.com/ goals. Once you know where you want to be, it’s important to create a plan to achieve your goals. Make sure your plan is manageable. You can always increase your activity level or further change your eating habits down the road. An example of a plan may be to walk for 20 minutes on your lunch break each day, and to replace your processed

snack foods with fruit and vegetables. A qualified fitness professional can help create a plan that works for you. No matter which stage of change you are in, follow the action steps to progress to the next stage. In my next article, I will discuss the final two stages of change, and offer ways to stay motivated once you have started your exercise program. Motivation comes from the root word motive, or ‘something that causes a person to act in a certain way or do a certain thing’. When it comes to health and fitness, motivation is what gets you started on a fitness program and healthy eating plan. It’s what moves someo n e from a sedentary lifestyle to an active Tanja lifestyle, SHAW f r o m a diet of processed, foods to whole, energizing foods. Motivation to exercise stems from a desire to change: either to move toward something positive (e.g. being healthy and fit), or to move away from something negative (e.g. avoiding disease, or weight gain). Psychologists describe the desire to change with ‘The Stages of Change’ model. There are five stages of change. Today, I will tackle the first three. The first stage of change is ‘Precontemplation’. In this stage, the subject does not act or think about change. One may be unaware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, be satisfied with current state of health, or may simply not care to change. Chances are, if you are willfully reading this article, you are at least thinking about fitness, and are not in this stage of change. I rarely get the opportunity to meet people in the pre-contemplation stage, since the act of calling me or searching for fitness opportunities implies a contemplation of change. If you are in the pre-contemplation stage (perhaps someone is forcing you to read this), or if you know someone who should start exercising, but has no intention to start, a good beginning is to increase awareness of the importance of healthy habits. It is not realistic to try and move a pre-contemplator to action with advice. The idea is to be a listening ear and be there to help the person when they do decide to take action. The next stage of change is ‘Contemplation’. In this stage one has

Chilliwack’s U-14 Her-Ricanes fastpitch team won gold at last weekend’s provincial tournament in Port Alberni. Led by speedsters Hunter Rodger and Jorja Goss, and defensive stalwarts Journey Benson, Katey Elliott and Ryleigh Martin, the Her-Ricanes advanced through the roundrobin in good shape, moving into the playoff round as the third seed. Sophie Di Marco led her team into a game against Ridge Meadows. With Hannah

Lamotte, Keanna Gaines, Kaiya Elliott, Nevada Depner, Tatjana Raphael and Shelby Owens swinging hot bats, the locals erased a 10 run deficit and won 13-12. The Her-Ricanes were crushed 11-1 in their next game by the top-seeded team from Cranbrook. But they still had a chance at gold as they took on the Fleetwood Bandits. Chilliwack beat the Bandits by seven runs, setting up a championship game rematch with Cranbrook. The Her-Ricanes jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, only to see their opponents claw back. In dramatic fashion, the Her-Ricanes plated the winning run in the 10th inning then silenced the Cranbrook bats for the win.

The tournament’s featured group, including James Lepp (Abbotsford) Luke Bogdan (Abbotsford) Bryn Parry (North Vancouver) and local favorite Jared Rempel, tees off Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m..

“It’s always exciting to come back as the defending champion in any tournament,” said Parr y, who won last year’s event in thrilling fashion over Abbotsford’s Aaron Hadwin. “The Chilliwack Men’s Open always has a great field, and I’m looking forward to playing with these guys again. The fans are always amazing here too.” There are 50 groups in all, with Chilliwackians peppering the field.

Bannerman switches from Vikes to the Valley

A local basketball star will be staying close to home after all. GW Graham senior girls standout Jenika Bannerman commit-

ted to the University of Victoria Vikes late last season, but has now switched gears. On Thursday morning, the University of the Fraser Valley announced her as one of three new recruits. “She had a number of options coming out of GW Graham, and we are thrilled to have her join the Cascades,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer, “She is a fantastic athlete who played several sports at a high level right up

until her senior year. We feel that she has just begun to realize her potential as a basketball player and the sky is the limit for her when you combine that with the work ethic she has shown since joining our program. She is already an elite defender and has a potent inside/outside offensive game.” Bannerman played in the Junior Cascades program, and was in constant contact with former GWG teammate Kaitlyn McDonald.

McDonald just finished her rookie year at UFV. “One thing about the UFV women’s basketball team is that they are very family orientated, and the coaches show true support and confidence in me, as if I were one of their own,” Bannerman said. “Which I am now! I know I have made the right decision and I can’t wait to get started.” See ufvcascades.ca for more info.

Tosin Julia

OBITUARIES

Dr. John Wilford passed away after a short illness on July 5th, 2014 in Chilliwack at the age of 92. Dad was born November 7, 1921 and raised in Chengtu, China as a missionary kid along with his two sisters. Their parents were Edward Corry and Florence Claudia Mae (Gaviller) Wilford. Dad and Mum (Agatha) met in medical school at University of Toronto, and married December 22, 1945. Following graduation they settled in Chilliwack in 1946. Dad was a loving and generous husband and father, good friend to many, and a respected doctor retiring at the age of 80 following Mum’s stroke.

Julia Tosin passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, July 15 in Chilliwack, BC. She is survived by her loving husband Leontije, her only son George, daughter-in-law Julie and grandchildren Ginae and Jacob. She will be loved and missed by all her family and friends forever. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 19 at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home. Online condolences may be offered at www.woodlawn-mtcheam.ca. Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home 45865 Hocking Avenue Chilliwack BC V2P 1B5 604-793-4555

He committed much time to his community most notably through Rotary which he joined in 1950 serving twice as president, Sixth Chilliwack Cub and Scout Group committee as chair for many years, and long-time United Church choir member and barber shopper. Never resisting a chance to be with family and friends, Dad was loved by many. He had a positive outlook, always a humorous quip, and seemed able to talk with anyone about anything. For the past twelve years until she passed away

January 18 of this year, Dad was by our Mum’s side as she coped with a debilitating stroke. He is a role model for us all. With great love he is survived by his daughter, Susan (Gerry) Morrison of Kelowna, his sons, David (Kathy) of Smithers, Ted (Ann Campbell) of Nanaimo, and Rob of Vernon; grandchildren, Tim Morrison, Chris (Rachel) Morrison, Michael Wilford, Jordan Wilford, Jessica (Brody Guy) Wilford, James (Ayami) Campbell, Nikki Wilford and Max Wilford as well as his great grandsons Kieran Morrison and Carwyn Guy. John is also survived by his niece Diana (Bill), his nephew Art (Dena), his cousin Edwin (Darlene) and their families. Besides Agatha, his wife of 68 years, he is also predeceased by his grandson, Johnny Wilford and his two sisters, Muriel and Patsy. A huge thank you to the staff at 4South at Chilliwack General Hospital. The celebration of Dad’s life will be held Friday, August 22nd at 2:30 pm at Chilliwack United Church, 45835 Spadina Avenue, Chilliwack. Flowers gratefully declined. Random acts of kindness in Dad’s name would be appreciated.

Hugo Waldemar Reimer passed away July 14, 2014. Hugo is survived by his wife Connie of 34 years, daughter Rinette and Andrew Badker, son Jesse and Jen Reimer, grandchildren Hannah, Keenan, Natalie Reimer, parents Waldemar and Irene Reimer, brother Gerhard and Christina Reimer. Hugo loved God and joyfully served as pastor for 31 years. Most recently at Sardis Community Church in Chilliwack, before that at Nechako Community Church in Vanderhoof, Clovis College Community in California and in Leaf Rapids Manitoba. Hugo had a love for life and an even greater love for people. He saw the best in everyone he met, wanting to encourage each and instill in them the knowledge that they are deeply valued and worthy of being loved. He was kind and thoughtful always wanting to do more, give more, help more, no task too minimal, no person unworthy. He was very athletic - loved downhill skiing, soccer, hockey, hiking and running. He also enjoyed exploring a tropical location each winter with his wife to snorkel and read. Hugo’s model for life is taken from “A Man from Le Mancha” quote “I see life not as it is but as it ought to be.” A celebration of life service will be held at Sardis Community Church on Tuesday, July 22 at 2:00 in the afternoon and will be live streamed at Nechako Community Church in Vanderhoof.

Trivia Talk A Giant Step for Democracy

The campaign of 1878 was in many ways the first modern political campaign in Canada. Almost all the candidates belonged to either the Liberal or Conservative parties. The secret ballot was used for the first time and the voting all took place on one day.

Then the Women Voted

Women were first given the right to vote in 1917 to those in the armed forces or those who had relatives in the forces. All women over 21 could vote starting in 1919.

KIWANIS: Sardis and Chilliwack

Kiwanis clubs, serving the children of the world, one child and one community at a time. Sardis meets Tuesday morning 7am at The Royal Hotel, and Chilliwack meets at noon Thursday at The Rendezvous. Everyone is welcome.
