Smoke choked the air, and some of the residents in 100 Mile House this week, with folks suffering sore throats and coughs on July 15. Ministry of Environment air quality meteorologists suspect much of the smoke is coming from a 2,200-hectare fire burning west of Quesnel.
People in 100 Mile House began experiencing a haze of thick smoke on July 15, and it is causing some sore throats, coughs, headaches – and concerns. Ralph Adams, B.C. Ministry of Environment’s air quality meteorologist for the Thompson and Cariboo regions, says it is getting more difficult to judge where the smoke is coming from. “The current situation is that Prince George has very, very high levels of smoke, Quesnel has high levels, while levels in Williams Lake are rising rapidly and levels in Kamloops and Okanagan are not rising. “We are under a generally southern flow; it’s coming up from the south-western deserts of the United States.” While the information he saw on July 14
indicated the heavy haze was coming from the fires in eastern Washington State, he notes this should show increases in Kamloops that simply aren’t happening any more. “It is rather odd that we they are somehow missing Kamloops, so I think ... what we are seeing is a combination of events.” However, Adams adds the large flow is generally stemming from the south to the southwest through the Southern Interior, but as you move north, it tends to move in a curve toward a westerly flow. The Euchiniko Lakes wildfire located approximately 120 kilometres west of Quesnel was estimated at 2,200 hectares in size, as of July 15. This is probably fuelling some of the smoke in 100 Mile House, he notes. “At this point, we don’t really know, but in all likelihood it’s the same smoke that’s affecting Williams Lake. I think what’s hap-

pening is some of the smoke from that fire in Quesnel is drifting and Soda Creek is coming downwards and clipping 100 Mile.” At any given time, there is always the possibility of another fire that they don’t yet know about, as it takes at least 12 hours for the BC Forest Service websites to post new fires of note, he adds. “We have large fires burning in Washington ... we saw it come over Kamloops, but it didn’t come down to ground level. We have a very large fire burning west of Quesnel, we have the Soda Creek fire that’s still burning – so in general, we are surrounded by fires. “Whichever direction the flow is, we are getting smoke from one of them, and depending how close you are to it, you will get different [air quality] values.” While only larger centres typically rate an air quality monitoring station and since folks Continued on 8

100 Mile House RCMP patrolling South Cariboo lakes
Ken Alexander Free Press
The 100 Mile House RCMP Detachment members are doing boat patrols in the South Cariboo over the course of the summer. Local RCMP Staff/ Sgt. Blake Ward says the onus will be on vessel operators and owners to ensure that they comply with the regulations and have safe vessels. “With my marine background, I will be making sure the members are fully informed about their enforcement authorities and prepared to address any issues on the water.” The focus will begin with education, he adds. “We will be trying to spread the word to all boaters about their need to make sure their vessels have all of their necessary safety equipment, that they have their Pleasure Craft Operators Proficiency cards and that their vessels are properly licensed.” In terms of enforcement, Ward says the RCMP has a variety of options depending on the circumstances. “We can start with verbal or written warnings and increase up to tickets, directing the vessel to return to shore, and court appearances.’ When it comes to alcohol and vessel operation, he explains it is no different than driving a motor vehicle. They just don’t mix, he adds. A vessel operator who has consumed alcohol or drugs may be charged under the Criminal Code if his or her ability to operate a motor vessel is impaired
by alcohol or drugs, Ward notes. “Other Criminal Code offences we may encounter could be dangerous operation of a vessel, failure to keep watch on person towed, towing a person after dark and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.” He notes other marine offences that may be enforced relate to the operation of the vessel and the interaction with other vessels, lights, etc. Boat checks 100 Mile House RCMP members were out on the water last week. Patrols were made on Sheridan and Horse lakes and several vessels were checked. However, the majority of vessels checked did not have their vessel licence documents on
board with them. All pleasure craft with a motor greater than 10 hp (7.5 kw) are required to be either be licensed or registered in Canada and have the vessel licence clearly marked on both sides of the vessel. The operator must carry the licence or registration papers on board the vessel as proof of ownership. If found operating a vessel that is not licenced in Canada, operating a vessel not marked as prescribed, or failure to provide forthwith the vessel documents, all of these offences carry fines of $250 plus a victim surcharge. Anyone wishing to licence their vessel can do so through Shared Services Canada. If a vessel has been purchased in the United States, prior to applying
for a Canadian vessel licence, the owner must have properly cleared Canada Customs and paid the applicable duty and taxes. Anyone looking for
more information on vessel licencing can check out the Transport Canada marine website or call the Boating Safety Hotline at 1-800267-6687.

Wanted man nabbed here BELOW THE BELT
Alaska resident Jeremy Dillon Estes, 31, who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for immigration offences, was spotted by 100 Mile House RCMP near the entrance to Centennial Park around 7:20 p.m. on July 15. When members attempted to arrest the him, he fled on foot toward the downtown area and then to the 100 Mile House Airport.
Estes managed to jump a number of fences and evade immediate arrest; however, several bystanders assisted police in locating his last point of travel. He attempted to run into a wooded area near First Street, but was arrested by police. He was taken into custody without further incident. Estes entered Canada illegally in May 2014.
Occupants escape with minor injuries Around 3:22 p.m. on July 14, members of the Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services and the 100 Mile House RCMP were dispatched to attend a single-vehicle collision on CanimHendrix Lake Road near the intersection of Roseneau Road. Upon arrival, officers located a blue, 2003 Pontiac Montana Van in the trees approximately 100 metres off of Canim-Hendrix Lake Road. The vehicle was significantly damaged. Investigation revealed the vehicle had been travelling north bound at a high rate of speed when it lost control on a corner, traversing off of the road. The vehicle skipped through a clearing and smashed into a tree approximately 100 metres from where it had left the roadway. Upon colliding with the tree, the vehicle spun 360 degrees coming to rest on a guy wire adjacent to a hydro pole. The male driver, a 26-year-old Canim Lake resident, was located a short distance from the vehicle straddling a tree. Scene evidence suggested the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the rear window of the van. The 30-year-old female passenger, also from Canim Lake, was wearing her seatbelt and the airbag deployed. Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department and 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue personnel provided initial
emergency response, bringing the male out from the collision site to the roadway where BC Ambulance paramedics treated him. The man was air lifted to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. Subsequent to the crash, the female was able to walk from the scene onto CanimHendrix Lake Road. She was transported to 100 Mile District General Hospital by B.C. Ambulance where she received treatment. Both individuals obtained non-life threatening injuries. Investigation into the matter continues and charges are expected. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
In June, Hope RCMP attempted to arrest him, but he successfully evaded arrest after contact was made. On July 12, Estes fled from a routine roadside vehicle check near Green Lake around 8:30 p.m., said Sgt. Darrell Robinson of the Clinton RCMP. A passenger in the vehicle with Estes was questioned and released without charges. Robinson said Estes, who had been camping in the area, is very dangerous. Smoke from large forest fires were hampering search efforts from the air, he explained a few hours before the
take-down in 100 Mile House on July 15. Based on this recent contact with Clinton RCMP, it was believed Estes could possibly be in the 100 Mile House area, so local RCMP members were watching for him. He is also wanted in the United States for violating terms of his probation. Estes will be held in 100 Mile House until he is turned over to Canadian Border Services Agency. 100 Mile House RCMP would like to thank the local citizens who assisted in directing the members to Estes after he fled.

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case - they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.
Tammy (McCarthy) is having a bad day. She’s totaled her clunker car, gotten fired from her thankless job at a greasy burger joint, and instead of finding comfort at home, finds her husband getting comfortable with the neighbour in her own
house. It’s time to take her boom box and book it. The bad news is she’s broke and without wheels. The worse news is her grandma, Pearl (Sarandon), is her only option -- with a car, cash, and an itch to see Niagara Falls. Not exactly the escape Tammy had in mind. But on the road, with grandma riding shot gun, it may be just what Tammy needs.

Fire prohibitions underway At noon on July 16, campfires became prohibited throughout the entire Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC). The prohibitions will remain in place until Sept. 30, 2014, or until the public is informed otherwise. This step is being taken to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. The fire danger rating is currently “high” throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre, with some areas rated “extreme.” With the current trend of warm and dry weather, wildfires in the CFC may display aggressive behaviour and require additional fire suppression resources. Human-caused wildfires divert critical resources and fire crews from responding to natural wildfires. No open burning Open burning is also prohibited throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre. This prohibition applies to open fires of any size, fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches, chimineas and burning barrels. This prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, as long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres. The open burning prohibition cover all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has
forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department. Check with local authorities for any other restrictions before lighting a fire.
Penalty warning Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345, or if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

Big engine, big prize goes to Quesnel resident

Chevy 350 crate engine went to lucky Hot July Nights entrant Quesnel resident Dave Erickson won the grand prize draw for a Chevy 350 crate engine at the Hot July Nights Car & Bike Show in 100 Mile House on July 11-13. Stephen Almond, one of the event’s organizers, met Erickson
at Central GM where Erickson picked up his prize on July 15. Central GM is one of the event’s major sponsors and is where the engine was purchased. The engine retails at about $3,300, runs at about 300 horse power and “has chrome every-
thing,” explains Peter Tonkin, another member of the Hot July Nights organizing committee. “It’s probably the best motor to put in a small hot rod.” Erickson won the draw prize available to about 200 entrants.
“Thanks to all our sponsors,” adds Tonkin.
“Without them we don’t have a show.”
here are complaining of sore throats, coughs and headaches, this should be considered as a health warning, Adams explains. “The rule of thumb is if you have heavy haze and you can smell smoke, you are probably in values where an advisory would be issued if they could monitor it. There is not a monitor in 100 Mile House.” He notes the Air Quality Health Index values depend on particulate matter
(PM2.5), ozone and nitrogen dioxide. “What is moving around rapidly now is the PM2.5, so usually in these conditions the PM2.5 and air quality index can get out of sync because one [rating measurement] is three hours and one is 24 hours.” Recommendations on how to protect your health in times of heavy smoke is online at www. interiorhealth.ca/YourEnvironment/ Emergenc yPreparedness/Pages/ Forest-Fires.aspx.
