Creative voting options floated for fall election Andrea Peacock News staff

Barry Denluck examines a tray of honeybees at the University of Victoria campus community garden in Gordon Head. Denluck installed the bee colonies earlier this month after two years of negotiations with community garden members and the university.

The not-so-secret life of bees

Beekeeping is on the rise in Saanich, and thanks to the latest apiaries at a Gordon Head community garden, more residents will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with the vital insects. Inside, discover beekeeper Barry Denluck’s infectious

passion for the honey-producers, why bee stings aren’t as common as some fear and why more people are recognizing the importance of beekeeping in nurturing plant reproduction across urban ecosystems.

The District of Saanich will be rolling out more options to increase voter turnout in November’s municipal election. Council voted this week to reinstate mobile voting stations, which had been replaced by mail-in ballots in 2011. Both options will now be available in the fall, said Mayor Frank Leonard. “[Staff] found that we had good results with the mail-in ballot, but where there had been better turnout with the mobile poll, it wasn’t there with the mailin ballot,” Leonard said. “That’s why they’re going to do both.” University of Victoria students and staff will also be able to vote on campus, thanks to a new advanced polling station. “The campus draws students from all over the region, which makes municipal voting a bit complicated,” said Coun. Dean Murdock. “Victoria and Oak Bay are also going to have voting opportunities

at UVic, so between the three municipalities, we will be able to help people find their home for voting.” Students will need to identify themselves along with their address in order to vote, Murdock said. “But unlike provincial or federal, you’re not restricted to a particular voting location.” Murdock said Saanich wants to make voting as accessible as possible to its residents. “If we can encourage people to get engaged and interested, and make it easy for them to cast a ballot, I think it’s important to do that,” he said. Along those lines, Murdock said council also asked staff to look into putting voting stations at popular public places such as shopping centres and recreation centres. “If it’s something Saanich can do to make [voting] more convenient, that’s always something we want to see go forward,” he said. The municipal election takes place Nov. 15. andrea.anthony@vicnews.com

COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF

Unlocked car break-ins irk police

Saanich police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables within view of potential thieves after eight vehicle break-ins occurred overnight. Homeowners in the 100-block of Carolwood Dr., the 1000-block of Quailwood Pl. and the 4400-block of Emily Carr Dr. were impacted by the break-ins, said Saanich PD Sgt. Steve Eassie. “In all but one of the thefts, the vehicles had been left unlocked,” Eassie said. Eassie urged vehicle owners to lock their cars, regardless of whether or not they feel the car is in a safe location. Anyone who may have witnessed the crimes is asked to call Saanich PD at 250-475-4321 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.

House fire in Cordova Bay

Families were roused a little earlier than normal Monday in Saanich’s Cordova Bay neighbourhood thanks to a deck fire. Around 6:30 a.m., 18 Saanich Fire Department firefighters headed to the 5300-block of Sayward Hills Cres. for a structure fire. Crews found the fire confined to the rear deck of the single family home and quickly extinguished it. The cause is under investigation, but damage is estimated at $15,000.

Chamber offers election training

Anyone can run in a municipal election campaign, but winning a seat requires planning, tact and seamless organization. To help potential candidates meet that challenge, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce is hosting a two-day seminar, Campaigning on a Shoestring, at the Sandman Victoria Hotel, 2852 Douglas St. this weekend. The event includes sessions with members of the Manning School of Practical Politics and training with Nation Builder, a digital community organizing software program. The Saturday-Sunday event costs $99. See victoriachamber.ca for info. editor@saanichnews.com

Prior to that, the club used the courts at Lambrick Park. In April 1990, the Saanich Tennis Club reached an agreement with the municipality of Saanich and BC Hydro to acquire the courts on Viewmont Avenue, the current location of the club, Huff said. The club would like to add a third court where a parking lot currently is, but Huff said it is quite difficult. “That’s a big job to take on to see if we can negotiate with Saanich to turn it into a court, and then the cost,” said Huff. “Maybe for the 60th [anniversary] we’ll have three courts.” Any current or former members wanting to come to the event are asked to RSVP. For more information about the event, call Judy Huff at 250-6584438.

Saanich tennis club celebrates 40 years

The Saanich Tennis Club is celebrating 40 years of tennis on Saturday, July 26. The event will involve an exhibition match, draws, raffles, games and a BBQ lunch. There will also be a bench dedication for an honorary member of the club who died last year, Sylvia Fong. “We’re trying to get as many of the past executive members to come out,” said Judy Huff, membership coordinator at the club. “It’s basically to honour all of the past executives [who] built up the club.” The club also put together binders of old photographs, newsletters and membership lists for members to look at. “It’ll be nice to reminisce,” said Huff. The event takes place from 12 p.m.

Father-daughter duo head to B.C. Games Nanaimo event brings together province’s best athletes including dozens of players from across Greater Victoria Daniel Palmer News staff

When Darren Reisig wakes up in Nanaimo for the B.C. Summer Games this morning, he’ll have a lot of commitments to meet. First he’ll be an official helper to his daughter, Sierra, and her U14 basketball team, who are already Vancouver Island-Central Coast champions. The tight-knit girls first face Cariboo - North East and Fraser Vally B before aiming for the provincial championship game on Sunday. “With Sierra and the girls, we’ve got height, we’ve got ball handling and most importantly, we’ve got girls who are willing to work hard,” Reisig says. “My daughter gets treated the same as any other player, but I’m fortunate where she’s a hard worker.” In between basketball games, Reisig will pop over to cheer on many of his Claremont

secondary lacrosse students who have benefitted from Reisig’s steady hand as athletic director at the school.

Reisig isn’t able to sign up in more than one role at the B.C. Games, which must have been a difficult decision for a coach involved in soccer, basketball, lacrosse and even golf on occasion. But the minor role means he can sit back a little and enjoy being a supporter, while University of Victoria Vikes head coach Craig Beaucamp and wife Tara take the helm

with Sierra and the girls. “It’s amazing having Craig Beaucamp as a coach. Sierra’s really enjoyed it,” Reisig says. The girls were tempted to split up earlier this year when Basketball B.C.’s development camp recruiters came knocking for the provincial team. But in the end, they chose to head to the B.C. Summer Games united. “We knew some of us would probably make the provincial team, but we’re glad we stuck together,” says Sierra, a Gordon Head middle school grad. “We’re going to work hard and hopefully make the finals on Sunday.” Middle school players from Gordon Head, Lansdowne, Pacific Christian Academy, Central, Dunsmuir, Glanford, Bayside and Monterey join Sierra on the court to represent Vancouver Island-Central Coast throughout the weekend in Nanaimo. OUR VIEW

Compelling case for bees The demise of honeybees across North America and Europe has been the focus of many biologists for the past two years in particular, as researchers further connect the industrious insects to plant health and reproduction. News reporter Andrea Peacock spent an afternoon at the district’s newest bee colony, or apiary – installed at the community garden near the University of Victoria on McKenzie Avenue – where she discovered beekeepers frequently battle public stigma around the likelihood of beestings. Bee allergies are rightfully a primary concern when considering the location of a new colony, but the insects are much more content to go about their business than sting passersby. It’s encouraging to see the likes of Barry Denluck, who provides relocation services to beehives at no cost to flustered homeowners with his relative immunity to stings. Other organizations with expert knowledge in beekeeping include the Capital Region Beekeepers Association, LifeCycles Project Society and the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre. If their staff can’t provide the answers you need, they’re certainly willing to reach out to people who can on your behalf. Introducing kids to beekeeping at an early age can also help diffuse the fear around bee behaviour. So next time you notice a buzzing insect near your patio furniture, take a moment to identify it. If it’s a honeybee, bumblebee or other noncarnivorous creature, let it be.

New First Nations approach needed Re: A brief history of treaty talks (B.C. Views, July 4) Tom Fletcher states “no society has made significant social and environmental progress without individual property rights. See the woeful state of most of Canada’s communally owned aboriginal reserves, where individually owned property isn’t permitted.” I would like to point out that around the time Columbus brought “civilization” to North America, Europe was just warming up to nearly 300 years of torturing and killing an estimated 40,000 to 100,000 women and men on fearmongered charges of witchcraft. I’m no scholar, but from what I’ve read, it was common in healthy, pre-contact aboriginal communities to share food and possessions with the whole community. Aboriginal communities also originated the concept of restorative justice, which permitted a way for perpetrators to be forgiven and reintegrate into society, as well as allow the victim to have a role in deciding appropriate consequences for the perpetrator. Homosexuality was accepted. Most aboriginals saw the Divine as one with all of nature, so all of nature was treated with respect. How could we make more environmental progress than to

live in sustainable harmony with nature, as aboriginals did? I’m sure aboriginal communities had their share of problems, but on the whole it sounds like they lived closer to Jesus’ teachings of loving one another, behaving charitably towards others, and not amassing wealth while others starve, etc., than we have been able to in our modern “civilized” societies. If “most of Canada’s communally owned aboriginal reserves” are indeed in a woeful state, I would see that more as evidence that it doesn’t work to take away a community’s children, subject them to physical and sexual abuse and neglect, teach them an old white man in the sky knows their every thought and will punish them, and then put them on a reserve and expect them to function optimally. Imagine the widespread hopelessness and despair that would result in our own communities, if all of our schoolaged children were taken away? Imagine the children returning to our devastated community years later, having been thoroughly taught that they’re secondclass at best. How healthy could our community then become, without serious help and healing? I note that though John Locke

was a great advocate of money and private property, he also believed government needed to play a role in distributing wealth more evenly. He neglected to say how that should be done. I would have thought that anyone who followed the libertarian-inspired role in de-regulating Wall Street, with touching faith in the integrity and self-regulation of those who put private profit above all else, and saw the resulting catastrophe, would at least have some second thoughts about where our driving economic forces are taking us. Surely it’s now apparent that a greed-based system works for only a tiny percentage of the population. Maybe it’s time to design a better system, one that places more value and respect on nature and fellow humans and animals. A system perhaps more inspired by simpler societies that achieved a level of social and environmental success than we can only dream of. Grace Wyatt Victoria The News welcomes opinions and comments. Affordable housing projects get go-ahead from District

Two new affordable housing projects are coming to Saanich after council gave them unanimous approval this week. The first is a 45-unit complex for seniors who are currently homeless or living in substandard conditions. The four-storey complex will be located at Quadra Street and Tolmie Avenue and run by the Victoria Cool Aid Society. “It’s desperately needed housing for [Cool Aid’s] clients, moving them from homelessness or couch surfing situations, so this gives a transition for them,” said Mayor Frank Leonard. “We’ve always been anxious to take advantage of an opportunity to reduce the homeless situation in the region.” This will be Cool Aid’s second building in Saanich. The first is Olympic Vista, a 36-unit building on Carey Road. “There are many seniors [who] are living in extremely substandard housing,” said John Crean, manager of housing for the Victoria Cool Aid Society. “Our priority right now is to get as many seniors out of shelters and out of substandard liv-

ing situations as we possibly can.” Cool Aid is currently waiting for the go-ahead from BC Housing before construction can begin. “This [project] has been years in the making, and here we are almost at the finish line, so we’re quite pleased,” Crean said. Residents for the complex will be chosen by a committee that uses a rating system to find the neediest seniors in the community, he said.

Habitat For Humanity complex approved The second affordable housing project is a four-unit townhouse by Habitat for Humanity Victoria. The homes will be built at 4000 Cedar Hill Cross Rd., where an old farmhouse is currently sitting. Habitat for Humanity Victoria currently has nine units in Saanich. With this new addition, there will be 13. “I literally say my door’s open for [Habitat for Humanity] to come in with proposals because we feel so strongly about them,” Leonard said. “They do such a good job.”

Habitat for Humanity hopes to get the building permit in the next four to six weeks, said Yolanda Meijer, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Victoria. She added they hope to have the families move in by June 2015. The homes are built half by volunteers and half with paid labour, along with half of the funds being donated by people in the community, Meijer said. “It simply wouldn’t happen without that community involvement,” she added. Before the families can move in, each are required to perform 500 hours of “sweat equity,” in which they participate in the building of their new home. The homes are sold to families making between $34,000 and $59,000 a year, who pay no more than 30 per cent of their gross income towards their mortgage and other home expenses. Three of the four families for the new Habitat for Humanity units have been chosen already, but applications are still being accepted for the fourth family. Anyone looking for more information about habitat for Humanity Victoria can go to habitatvictoria.com or call 250-386-7867.

Ace, Saanich Police Department’s happygo-lucky police dog, mascot, needs some willing volunteers to help him attend more community events. Working in teams of two, volunteers choose to either don Ace’s outfit or walk alongside him as his handler, said Ian Gibbs, Saanich PD volunteers co-ordinator. “The most we ever have is 22 people,” he said. “We send out lists to all our volunteers for the events where Ace has been booked, and you can either pick one of those events or opt out.” Gibbs said those who volunteer as Ian Gibbs. Ace run the gamut from first-year students to retired couples. In his three years with the force, Ace has become a mainstay of many Saanich community events including Strawberry Festival, Gorge on Art and the Canada Day parade. “Our criteria is the event has to be open to the public and over 50 people, otherwise we’d have Ace showing up at every kid’s birthday party,” he said. The demand for Ace has increased this year, and Gibbs said a steady list of volunteers would help immensely. “The difference Ace makes is huge and the police feel really strongly because he’s promoting something positive,” Gibbs said. “Sometimes parents walk by and say, ‘Oh watch out, the police will get you.’ And you’ve got a four year old who’s now afraid of the police. But Ace helps us relate to kids on their level.” To book Ace the Mascot or request a volunteer application, email ace@saanichpolice. com or call Gibbs at 250-475-4321. editor@saanichnews.com

The engine is its strongpoint but it’s not just a one-trick pony. I like the interior a lot. The steering wheel is soft to the touch and I like that you can control various functions like the audio, Bluetooth, or cruise control from it. The centre stack has charm, too. high-powered ‘Eau Rouge’ version of the car will hit the production line. Yours truly, will join the team next month at the Belgian Grand Prix, at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, location of the famous ‘Eau Rouge’ corner. We will drive Q50s from the south of England, through the Euro Tunnel and on to Spa. Immediately prior to the race weekend, yours truly will join international journalists in a behind-the-scenes visit to the team’s UK base in Milton Keynes. There we will learn something about the fast track work they carry out on the F1 cars. I suspect we will get a peek at what is in store for that car on your driveway and you will read about it here. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

201 3

Even if you squint while looking at the Hybrid gas-electric car on your driveway, you likely have a hard time imagining it is anything like an F1 racecar. However, the new advanced hybrid technology at play in this 2014 season means that Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway. The car power units are 1600cc turbocharged V6 engines with direct fuel injection. They have to complete each race with 35 per cent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. That would mean your favourite driver would bow out half way through without further engineering help. In addition, the power units have two electric motors, one linked directly to the turbocharger, the other working in the same way that the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) used to do. The result is a combined maximum power output of around 760bhp, which is similar to the output of the V8 cars of last year. It is a certainty that the rapid-fire experimentation that is going on in F1 will result in improvements to our everyday cars. That’s the beauty of this highly competitive sport that is so geared to winning. Changes come faster because there’s no chance to undertake testing that takes ages

under normal testing. Last year, when I visited the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do things so much more quickly than we can do under normal development processes because they have to. And the changes they make are so thoroughly tested on the track. It points two ways: sometimes what they do shows us the way to go but also the way not to go!” Hong Kong-based Infiniti has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-on-the-wheel approach to his role. He has played a significant role in the development of the compact Q30, which should surface later next year. He has already left his mark on the all-new Infiniti Q50 sport sedan and sports car enthusiasts pray a

What do you get when you combine the world’s best-selling zero emission vehicle with innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt? Answer: a Nissan LEAF electric vehicle that might just be “the world’s cleanest car.” Created to demonstrate its potential use in future production vehicles, this LEAF’s exterior was treated with a specially engineered paint that is designed to repel water and oils. The “self-cleaning” paint, called Ultra-Ever Dry, creates a protective layer of air between the paint and environment, effectively stopping standing water and road spray from creating dirty marks on the LEAF’s surface. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Drives-U-Crazy ... Stop signs

Stop signs mean stop now, not eventually. There’s little that’s more scary when you are moving briskly along a major city arterial route than to be confronted suddenly by a car rolling at a clip over a stop line from a side road on the right. The driver knows whether the car is going to stop before entering the highway. I don’t because I’m not a mind reader. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

there is less fanfare around the fact that it actually exists and more excitement about how it performs. The bigger question is with so many small luxury SUVs entering the market, is the Macan worth the $54,300 to get a base model or $82,200 for the turbo?

Looks The Macan uses same platform as the Audi Q5, a Volkswagen Group sibling, but features an entirely different body shell and engine options. The most striking design element is the wide hood that folds over the side of the front fenders, making a seamless, wide stance that is impressive. The hood actually has cutouts for the headlamps and weighs only 17kg. “Side Blades” decorate the lower body of the Macan and can be ordered in black, a matching body colour or carbon fibre. The back end of the Macan is particularly sleek and tidy, the taillights wrap around from the side and into the tailgate with precession. It’s the lack of a trunk release that makes the design so pleasing. Instead, a small button on the base of the windshield wiper that electronically releases the power tailgate. Below the tailgate four exhaust tips tell passersby that this is a powerful machine. Inside What the Macan has over the Q5 is a level of interior refinement that is almost unmatched in the car business. It’s finished with fine leather

and a simple design that makes interacting with this SUV a joy. There are several drawbacks though. The cargo area is long but the rake of the rear window limits taking larger objects inside the car. The back seat I find too small for a family of four people. Since I own a Cayenne, I have a great perspective on the amount of room this Macan offers. Legroom is obviously tighter, headroom is just okay, it is the lack of space side-to-side that I find limiting. The Cayenne is a perfect family choice, the Macan I believe is suited for a single person or active professional couple. Not to say it couldn’t be use for family duty, it just wouldn’t be my choice.

Drive

The launch of the Macan in California provided a route that carved through the mountains outside of Los Angeles on the way to Willow Springs racetrack. Porsche always holds its events at a racecourse, proof that they believe they have something in this new SUV. There might be some confusion surrounding the naming of this car. Both the Macan S and Macan Turbo come fitted with a V6 turbo. The base model is a 3.0L V6 with 340hp. The “Turbo” gets a larger 3.6L V6 with a higher output turbocharger and is rated at 400hp. The base model would be my choice. Driving in back country roads the power was fantastic and the additional money could be spent upgrad-

ing the suspension from the base steel springs to steel with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) that allows the driver to set the firmness of the ride. This upgrade was noticeable on the track. The Turbo comes standard with this setup but the added power and expense was only really noticeable when the Macan was pushed very hard around the racetrack. For regular commuting the S is just fine.

Verdict I love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses. Here is the issue: the Macan can get very expensive in a hurry. All of the cars I drove in California were over $100,000 with features like PASM, additional air suspension and sport-chrono settings for the 7-speed duel clutch automatic. When I configure a base S with the features I would want like navigation, PASM, front and rear parking sensors, bigger wheels, Bose stereo and a few other odds and ends, comes to almost $75,000, never mind the $82,200 starting price of the Turbo. Having recently driven the spectacular Audi SQ5, from which this car is based, that 354hp rocket is a bargain at $60,000, almost fully equipped. I like the Macan, and they will sell every one to people who want to have the latest, but I think the pricing structure is a bit over the top. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Teens make going green look easy Reynolds students win United Way Green Youth award Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

Two Reynolds secondary students are being recognized for their efforts in leading a green push at their school and in their community. Fiona Gregg, a lead hand at Reynolds’ Red Wiggler Ranch, and Anna Stark, a cohort among the school’s eco-action leaders both shared United Way’s Green Youth award at the organization’s 16th annual Youth Now event in May. “I just try to make the world we live in a better place,” Gregg said. “You start in school and branch

out into the community.” Reynolds’ eco-action leaders helped spearhead a chicken coop in the school’s courtyard. Stark, now in Grade 11, was handed the chicken task three years ago. “It’s a program where we raise chickens for the community, to get real food back into the community,” Stark said. “It’s really cool, now I have chickens at home too.” More recent endeavours include the Reynolds Red Wiggler Ranch, a project started in March where the students grow red wiggler worms for composting. “We thought we could sell them and raise money for

other Reynolds initiatives,” Gregg said. The teens have been engaged in environmental community service for the past three years in an effort reduce their carbon footprint and encourage sustainable living. United Way CEO Patricia Jelinski said the pair highlight outstanding endeavours in today’s youth. “It is amazing to meet outstanding youth like Anna and Fiona that are leaving such a positive mark on our community as volunteers, role models and upcoming leaders,” Jelinski said. CRD wants smoking input The Capital Regional District’s proposal to expand the controversial Clean Air Bylaw is one step away from becoming law. Director voted 12-6 last Wednesday to ban smoking in parks, playgrounds, public squares, bus stops and within seven metres from doorways and air intakes, up from the current three metres. Now the region is seeking more public comment on the bylaw with a public infor-

mation session with CRD and Island Health staff July 23 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the CRD board office, 625 Fisgard St. To speak at the meeting, please register in advance via email at: cleanair@crd.bc.ca. WHAT ARE THE RULES AROUND OIL TANKS IN SAANICH? The BC Fire Code requires the removal of buried tanks which are of no further use, or have not been used for two years. Once a tank is removed, the surrounding soil must be assessed for contamination. Any contamination must be cleaned up by a contractor To install, relocate, abandon or remove a tank in Saanich, you need a permit from the Fire Department. For more information call the Fire Prevention Office at 250-475-5500. Hiring a professional oil tank company for removals and clean-ups is strongly recommended. Do you have a house-hunting story you’d like to share with us? Email: editor@ saanichnews.com To advertise in HomeFinder, contact Oliver Sommer at Email: osommer@ blackpress.ca

BUYING TIP | The Saanich Fire Department keeps detailed records on buried oil tanks

Be on the lookout for buried hazard

Buyers and sellers should be aware of oil Laura Lavin News staff

An important question to ask when you’re purchasing property in Oak Bay is not, ‘is there a buried oil tank?’ rather, it’s ‘where is the oil tank buried?’ Underground oil storage tanks are common in Saanich, as natural gas wasn’t brought to the area until the early ‘90s and oil heat was common. If you’re selling your home, you’ll want to know if there’s a tank buried on your property and if there is: “Get rid of it,” says real estate agent Cassie Kangas. “There is a culture of fear around them,” she says. The fear is due to the cost a leaking tank can cause the owner – upwards of $50,000, if the spill has spread. When selling, Kangas says start with a realtor who knows the area. “They can pull the records at the ... fire department – homeowners can do that themselves, but that’s why you have

Crews dig up oilcontaminated soil in the 2800-block of Adelaide Ave. in Saanich after an estimated 300 litres of home heating oil spilled on the site in 2012. Kyle Slavin/ News staff

a realtor, they can do those things for you. They understand what the records mean and can sit you down and tell you what you need to do,” she says. There are a variety of steps a homeowner can take to prepare their property for sale. If an oil tank that has not been rendered inert is on the property, a scan can be done to find it and Kangas says, if the seller is in a

financial position to remove it, that’s the best option. It’s better to find the tank and deal with it prior to putting your home on the market because a buried oil tank can be a deal breaker when it comes to making a sale. “We’ve seen some fairly scary situations where people have done work with no permit,” Kangas says. Oil tanks can be found

buried under driveways and patios and even under extensions made to the home. “Just because you don’t know it’s there doesn’t absolve you (financially, if there’s a leak),” she says. Those looking to buy in the area should be just as diligent about buried oil tanks. “Again, use a realtor who knows the area. … If a seller hasn’t disclosed that

there’s a tank, or doesn’t know, get (your realtor) to go to the Oak Bay Fire Department and pull the records.” Then, she says, you can negotiate with the seller to have the tank removed. “The seller really needs to deal with it prior to selling,” says Kangas. “A buried oil tank is no big deal, but if it’s leaking, suddenly it’s a big deal.” editor@saanichnews.com
