The dream of a young Cranbrook woman who passed away in 2012 is coming to fruition. Jacey Uphill of Cranbrook conceived of a foundation that could raise awareness of childhood cancers and help provide support for those families who are fighting those battles.
Today, more than a year later, the non-profit organization that Jacey founded, Believe in the Gold — from her personal mantra “believe” — is up and running. The 19-year-old from Cranbrook became an activist for childhood cancer over her two and a half year battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, when she found there was not one program in Canada dedicated to
dealing with childhood cancers and helping the families of those with childhood cancers. Even while undergoing treatment, she remained active in the Cranbrook and Kimberley communities, raising awareness and support. And in the past year and a half, Jacey’s family have carried on her legacy. Believe In The Gold is now a fully func-
tioning non-profit, 100 per cent volunteer run. Part of the proceeds Believe in The Gold raises go to the Helping Families Handle Cancer Foundation, an organization that provides financial assistance to families struggling with the costs that come with a cancer diagnosis.

Smoke from wildfires in the Okanagan and in Alberta are bringing a haze of smoke to the East Kootenay. Jordan Turner, fire information officer for the Southeast Fire Centre, said the smoke that is making its way to Cranbrook is being seen across the fire centre’s jurisdiction. “There’s a lot of smoke coming from a
wildfire on the border of Banff National Park in Alberta,” Turner said. “We’re also seeing it come in from a fire on Apex Mountain in the Okanagan. So with the weather system, we’re kind of getting it from both directions.” He said they are expecting a temperature inversion to move the smoke out of the valleys soon.

GENEVA — Texas blues legend Johnny Winter, who performed in Cranbrook in October 2011, has died. Known for his lightning-fast blues guitar riffs, his striking long white hair and his collaborations with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and childhood hero Muddy Waters, Winter was 70. Winter was a leading light among the white blues guitar players, including Eric Clapton and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, who followed in the footsteps of the earlier Chicago blues masters. Winter idolized Waters — and got a chance to produce some of the blues legend’s more popular albums. Rolling Stone magazine named Winter one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. His representative, Carla Parisi, confirmed Thursday that Winter died in a hotel room in Zurich a day earlier. The statement said his wife, family and bandmates were all saddened by the loss of one of the world’s finest guitarists. There was no immediate word on the cause of death. Winter had been on an extensive tour this year that recently
brought him to Europe. His last performance came Saturday at the Lovely Days Festival in Wiesen, Austria. The tour, a documentary that premiered at the SXSW Festival exploring his music, youth and substance abuse battles, and a newly released four-CD set of recordings were all part of Winter’s celebration of turning 70 this year. John Dawson Winter III was born on Feb. 23, 1944, in Mississippi, but was raised in Beaumont, Texas. He was the older brother of Edgar Winter, also an albino, who rose to musical fame with the Edgar Winter Group. Winter was one of the most popular live acts of the early 1970s, when his signature fast blues guitar solos attracted a wide following. But his addiction problems with heroin during that decade and later battles with alcohol and prescription medication, including methadone, also drew attention. His career received a big boost early on when Rolling Stone singled him out as one of the best blues guitarists on the Texas scene. This helped secure a substantial recording contract from Columbia Records in 1969 that led to an appearance at the
Woodstock Festival and gave him a wide following among college students and young blues fans. Crowds were dazzled by the speed — and volume — of his guitar playing, which had its roots in urban blues but incorporated elements of rock ‘in roll. Winters paid homage to Waters on “Tribute to Muddy,’’ a song from his 1969 release “The Progressive Blues Experiment.’’ He continued to pick up accolades, producing three Grammy Award-winning albums for Waters and recording with John Lee Hooker, which helped revive their careers. Winter performed often with blues and rock singer Janis Joplin and the two became close during the 1960s. Among the blues classics that Winter played during that era were “Rollin’ and Tumblin’,’’ ‘’Bad Luck and Trouble” and “Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl.” He also teamed up with his brother Edgar for their 1976 live album “Together.” He was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1988. Marijuana production facilities not eligible for farm tax rates Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff
The province is excluding federally-licensed medical marijuana production from the list of agricultural uses that qualify for farm classification for assessment and property tax purposes. The B.C. Government addressed concerns from municipalities across B.C. regarding the facilities and the potential loss of property tax revenues from the Health Canada licensed fa-
cilities. At the July 14 meeting, Mayor Wayne Stetski said he was happy to see the province took the concerns of municipalities seriously and “plugged that loophole.” “This is good news,” Stetski said. The farm class would offer low land values, reduced tax rates, PST exemption and exemptions on farm buildings up to 87.5 per cent of value. The province noted that licensed facilities can be lo-
cated on both provincial Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) land and non-ALR lands, subject to government zoning and other regulations. While medical marijuana production is consistent with the province’s definition of a farm use under the Agricultural Land Commission Act, the drug is classified as a federally-regulated narcotic, so properties won’t be eligible for farm-classification for property tax purposes. The ALR already in-
cludes approved activities that are not eligible for the farm classification. Some of those include farm or ranch tourism operations, sand and gravel extraction operations, and winery and cider facilities. The province also noted that municipalities, such as Pitt Meadows, looking to enact bylaws prohibiting medical marijuana production “may wish to seek legal counsel as enacting such a bylaw may give rise to a constitutional challenge as
frustrating a lawful initiative of the federal government.” Coun. Bob Whetham said the taxation issue was positive, but the reference to the ALR was a “red herring”. “The requirements for one of those industrial buildings, if I remember correctly, is you have to have power, water and so on,” Whetham said. “If you look on agricultural lands, most of them are not located around places where those services are available.”
He said he welcomed the news, but found it strange that they brought the ALR into it. There have been five licenses issued by the federal government in Central Saanich, Maple Ridge, Whistler, Nanaimo and Spallumcheen. Coun. Gerry Warner asked if the city had received any applications for a local production facility, but CAO Wayne Staudt said it is confidential until a license is issued.

A 27-year-old Cranbrook woman has been charged with attempted murder over an incident on July 3. Kellie Lynn Stetski appeared via video in Cranbrook Provincial Court on Monday, July 14, charged with one count of attempted murder. She is being kept in custody in Alouette Correctional Centre for
Women. Duty counsel Rick Strahl asked Judge Grant Sheard to put the case over to August 11 to fix a date for a bail hearing. RCMP were unable to release much information about the lead-up to Stetski’s arrest. Cst. Katie Forgeron said Cranbrook RCMP began investigation of an alleged assault on July 3. “Our findings were discussed with Crown and that resulted in
Crown laying a charge,” said Cst. Forgeron. “This was an isolated crime and the accused and victim did not know each other.” RCMP continue to work with Crown to investigate the incident. “We really can’t get into much more details at this time as it is before the courts and we don’t want to impact on the proceedings,” said Cst. Forgeron.

Wildfire branch fighting small fires around region Continued from page 1 “But with the many wildfires we have happening now in eastern Washington and north of Prince George we’re expecting smoke on and off for the foreseeable future throughout the entire region,” Turner said. Donna Haga, air quality meteorologist with the B.C. Ministry of Environment, said the Kootenays are sitting below the air quality objective levels right now, but they are close to the levels. “I would say people should use common sense — if it looks smoky outside it probably is. If folks are experiencing health effects from this then they should certainly take precautions.” There is an advisory
for Golden right now. She noted that none of the fires currently in the Kootenays are what the Wildfire Management Branch would call “of note” which means they would significantly impact visibility or people’s health. “You turn on the news and hear there are fires all around the province, and that smoke can travel large distances,” she said. “I think the temperatures are supposed to cool off a little going into the weekend, but it’s still going to be quite warm.” Haga said it’s difficult to predict how the air quality will fluctuate, especially with wildfires, but there are some tools that allow the public to look at the forecast.
The Wildfire Management Branch has an interactive map that shows where fires are currently burning on www.bcwildfire.com. There is also www. bcairquality.ca which includes an hour-byhour forecast of smoke from wildfires in western Canada. Turner said there are a few small wildfires burning in the East Kootenay, which initial attack crews are working on. There are four initial attack targets near Elkford all under one hectare in size. He said those are all deemed to be lightning caused. There is also an initial attack fire that is 5.5 hectares in size just west of Canal Flats. He said that one was industry caused and is under investigation.

The 1,100-member community of Hudson’s Hope and 200 BC Hydro staff at the two Peace River dams have been ordered evacuated as a nearby wildfire has grown to 20,000 hectares. The Mount McAllister fire is too volatile for firefighters to take on at this time. The fire is also threatening the Dokie Ridge wind farm to the east of the fire, which is burning 56 km west of Chetwynd in northeastern B.C. BC Hydro reported Wednesday afternoon that its staff at the
W.A.C. Bennett and Peace Canyon dams have been evacuated but they continue to operate. Transmission lines are not threatened. “These evacuations will not impact our ability to provide power to the province, as the units at both generating stations can be operated remotely,” said BC Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer. “Also, we can shift more of our load to our generating stations on the Columbia River, including Mica and Revelstoke, if required.” The Bennett dam alone is responsible for 30% of BC Hydro’s electricity output.

A bug’s life
How the city prepares a banquet for bugs In Part One of a three-part series on how microorganisms turn Cranbrook’s sewage into water, we learn what the city does to make what leaves your home appetizing for the bugs that eat it Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
Bugs. They are the City of Cranbrook’s smallest and lowest paid employees. But without them, Cranbrook would have a big, stinking, steaming mess on its hands. You see, teeny tiny bugs, each one smaller than you could see with the naked eye, take on a job for us that no other living being in their right mind would do: they eat our poop. Last month, City of Cranbrook Director of Public Works Joe McGowan took this reporter on a tour of Cranbrook’s wastewater lagoons and spray irrigation fields, to follow the life of a bug as it busily takes care of the nasties in our sewage and leaves little but water behind. Let’s dive in, shall we? (Sorry, that was a poor choice of phrase.) Everything that goes down a drain in your home – be it from the sink, the shower, the toilet or the washing machine – is sent into pipes that carry it via gravity to Cranbrook’s wastewater lagoons. Located just past the interchange at the northeastern edge of
town, the lagoons sit at the lowest point in the city. “We use the geography of this area to drain the sewage from wherever it originates to this point,” explains McGowan. When the waste arrives – it’s called “influent” at this point – it consists of 99 per cent water, and 1 per cent lumpies. “Water comes into your house clean, picks up its cargo and transports that cargo to this site,” explains McGowan. “Our job is to remove the cargo from the water so that the water can return to the environment ready for its next use.” The task of removing that cargo is both simple and complex, and bugs – or microorganisms – do most of the heavy lifting. “We hire microorganisms. When you flush the toilet, the microorganisms in (the lagoons) thank you. What to you is waste, to them is dinner,” said McGowan. But first, the wastewater has to be made appetizing to the bugs – they’re all about the poop and only want or-
ganic materials. “We remove the stuff that microorganisms need not concern themselves with and provide them with a banquet.” Before it goes into the lagoons, the wastewater flows into an underground chamber. Here any floatables in the water – grease, fat, oil, anything that is less dense than water – rises to the top and every three months or so, the city brings in a suction truck to slurp off the top and take it to the landfill. From that chamber, the wastewater goes through a screening machine. On a vertical conveyer belt, a row of tiny teeth less than an inch apart pick up anything solid in the water. This is the part where I wanted to close my eyes. As well as giving me serious concerns about the digestive health of some Cranbrookians, the screener showed me a few hard truths. Number one: flushable wipes are not biodegradable. Similarly, number two: garborators are just transferring the mess to someone else who has to clean it up. And number three:
$10,000 worth of drugs seized Continued from page 1 “Subsequent to the arrest, police were able to obtain a search warrant for his residence on 2nd Street North,” Newel said. “Once inside police located more crack cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine. “Seized were approximately 80 grams of crack cocaine, over 22 grams of meth, 53 points of heroin and over two grams of cocaine. Cocaine is typically sold in one half to one gram quantities; heroin is sold by the point with one point usually being a hit or dose. The combined street value of the drugs is over $10,000.” In court, the subject was released with conditions including $10,000 bail, not to be
within 50 km of Cranbrook, a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and not to possess a cell phone. He has not yet posted bail.

in McGowan’s words, “Nobody digests corn. It’s a proven fact.” The screener picks up all these lovely solid items, an auger squeezes out the water, and a conveyer belt dumps what’s left into an industrial waste bin. Once a week, that bin is trucked out to the landfill in all its stinking glory. Senior utility operator Jason Perrault explains why there are strips of black fabric hanging over the waste bin. Birds love the wastewater lagoons, he says – ducks, geese... and ravens. The ravens took a fancy to the waste bin and developed the habit of flying in and flinging out whatever interested them. (Maybe bugs aren’t the only living beings that want to eat our poop.) The black fabric is a highly scientific method of keeping the birds away – and so far it’s working. The last transformation was driven not by technological change but by the rise of what Kelly calls “segmental societies” – ones where nuclear families became associated in larger clans that extended down the generations. This allowed them to mobilise large numbers of warriors for purposeful raiding. Now killing could happen not at the border but in dawn attacks on the places where the neighbouring group sleeps. Massacre can be the result – and so can a permanent expansion of the territory controlled by your own group. Jebel Sahaba, says Kelly, is the first archeological evidence we have of when this last transformation occurred. War becomes institutionalised in human societies, and grows as they do. Welcome to the present, you might say. We all still keep armies, and they are constantly preparing for wars that may no longer even involve land. But have you noticed that no great power has fought any other for the past 69 years? That is quite new in our history. The second transformation, the one that led to about 400,000 years of relative peace, occurred because attacking your neighbours had become too dangerous: the weapons had got too lethal. It is possible that we are in the midst of a comparable transformation now, although it must be admitted that there is still rather a lot of the old behaviour around. Items compiled from the archived newspapers held at the Cranbrook Museum and Archives. 1899 Cranbrook’s First Wedding … Cranbrook’s first wedding occurred at 8 o’clock Wednesday morning, July 12, Miss Eliza J. Evans, of Revelstoke and Mr. Charles Reid, a brother of Mr. W. T. Reid, of this city, being the contracting parties. The day was ideal Kootenay weather, and the wedding party was quite large. The building was beautifully decorated, and as the bride and groom walked up the centre aisle of the church Mrs. W. T. Reid played a wedding march on the organ. Afterward a picture was taken of the wedding party, and then the members repaired to the home of Mr. W. T. Reid, where they partook of a bountiful wedding breakfast. Mr. Reid left on the 9:30 train for Brandon, Man., where he has some urgent business in connection with the purchase of a stock of goods, but will return here in a few days. New Sign … The Cranbrook Hotel is having a sign painted that can be read clear to Kimberley. 1900 Room For A Promoter … The Herald feels that there is need for a matrimonial bureau in Cranbrook. A man or woman who is an artist in promoting ventures of that kind will find in Cranbrook a first-class field for the exercise of their exceptional abilities in an unusual and useful occupation. There are a large number of marriageable young men who will compare favourably in all respects with the young men of any land. There are also a number of marriageable young ladies in Cranbrook, who must be proof against Cupid’s
darts. As an inducement to a first class promoter of matrimonial ventures to establish an office here The Herald will give an idea of the material here to work on: No. 1—Frank Rankin: Frank is of Swede extraction, but not possessed of the musical dialect; for 28 years a good-looker, good dresser, and high-stepper; light moustache, weighs about 175 pounds; is doing a good business in the clothing trade; would make a devoted, loving husband, and is of such a good disposition that when the time comes, if necessary he will willingly walk the floor nights with the baby. No. 2—Alex McDermot: This is a young Irishman, about 40 years old (in experience); an expert keeper of books and of any other old thing worth keeping; a perfect Apollo in form with warm-coloured hair; wears old gold shoes with tooth-pick toes; of a religious turn of mind, abstemious in his habits (some of them); he swears only by Joe Marlin. No. 3—Ernie Small: A tall, slender young Welshman, fair hair and blue eyes; inclined to the Apollinarius in form; a good dresser and of a disposition of the conjugular vein; keeps a first-class hotel, and the girl that catches him will have plenty to eat and nothing else to do but look on the bright side of life and feel happy; he is fond of children and would make a devoted husband. No. 4—Fred Pieper: Here is a cracker-jack. The young lady who gets him will have a soft snap; fair, blue eyes, and thin light hair; is a direct descendant of the Pied Piper of Hamlin, from whence his name is derived; always wears a smile, the top side of which is fenced in with a light, but strong moustache: is a decorator with a handsome income, real estate and mines; is jolly and enjoys a good joke, except when it is on him, and then he enjoys it more; the girl that gets him will have a
“puddin’ ”; he’ll see that she don’t have to do a thing — not even talk. No. 5—Tommy Rookes’ son Paul: rather youthful, maybe, to wed, but if she had plenty of capital Paul certainly could take care of a wife right now; is about 18, a good-looker, good dresser, bike racer, ball player, telephone line architect and many other accomplishments; of medium size, with a future luring him on in life. No. 6—Sam Morrow: Tall, not too slender, and attached to the mercantile business; strangers sometimes mistake Sam for a minister of the gospel — but he ain’t; quiet, but does a whole lot of thinking, especially when in the presence of ladies; is of a poetical or artistic temperament, and enjoys the scenery at Moyie Lake very much. No: 7—Jimmie Patterson: “Pat,” everybody calls him; cashier in a big bank; under 25, rather short and stout and always wears a smile of the extension table order — can be lengthened to suit the demands of the occasion; his native language is patios, but he also speaks English fluently “as she is spoke” in Cranbrook. Curfew … While there can be no curfew law in Cranbrook, something ought to be done by parents to keep their little ones at home after dark. As late as 11 o’clock p.m. the Herald is informed, small children are roaming the streets of Cranbrook. All children, and in fact adults whose legitimate business does not keep them out of bed, should be at home and asleep at that hour. Breakaway … Last Tuesday morning a halter with a horse at one end and a piece of 2x4 about four feet long at the other end, came tearing down Armstrong Avenue. Every jump the poor animal made, the stick pounded him somewhere until he must have thought the devil or “Baldy” was after him. He was later reported being found on the prairie all right beyond a few bruises.
Breaking barriers: home is where the heart is My name is Raux, and I have a disability. This is the sixth in a weekly series about living with a disability in a community like Cranbrook. Your home is your sanctuary, where you can leave the rest of the world on the welcome mat; it can be difficult to nest and truly make a home yours in a rental. My own goals include building a home that is suited to my needs and design aesthetic. In the meantime, I am working hard to save up and plan for the day I will reach this dream. Renting: In Cranbrook there are only a few places that offer wheelchair accessible suites – Abbott Gardens, Sonja’s Gardens and Baker Gardens. You can apply for these through the Canadian Mental Health Association. If you are lucky, you may find houses or apartments that will work as is or require minor adjustments. Landlords can be very understanding and accommodating if you don’t require major renovation. Buying: Accessible homes needing no adjustments are few and far between in our small community, especially as one person’s needs may not be the same as the next person. If you find one, consider carefully the costs to renovate other homes before passing it up. Barrier-free, wheelchair accessible, elevator and walkout are key words that can make a home stand out from other listings and let you know that there is an accessible entry. From there you can determine if the layout offers enough space for your furniture and
equipment; the bathroom may be the deciding factor, as changes could be minor or major. Social housing: Creating a community of people that have the need for support, understanding and accessibility. We all worry about things in our lives: things we have to do, things we plan to do, things we cannot control. One thing we shouldn’t have to worry about is the care of our loved ones who have special needs. We carry this worry our whole lives, their whole lives, and we may have to trust that strangers will care as much for them when we can no longer manage on our own. It is not only my dream to build my own home but I would also like to build a home for my community that includes private accessible suites with shared common areas on the main floor and private suites upstairs for live-in care aids. I want this to be a home, not a facility. I’d like to take away the burden of worry by creating an environment to grow old in your home— this model can also work for hospice care and/or accessible travel accommodations. Independence is important for everyone and sometimes we only have it for a short time. This idea of social housing would allow people who want the privacy of their own space with the security and flexibility of having help when you need it, not scheduled weeks in advance when you assume you’ll need it. Creating a community of others that would benefit from this system allows them to combine and share
resources that they would otherwise have to manage on their own and their care aids would have to supplement their income with other clients if one person alone cannot guarantee full-time hours. Having neighbours who understand each other’s challenges creates a built-in support system as well, should they choose to participate. Pets: The value of a companion is priceless, particularly for people that are shutin. I understand why landlords often refuse pets; however, exceptions should be made in some cases. I have no problem paying a deposit or signing an agreement to cover any damage caused by my pet while I’m living in their rental unit. I honestly believe any and every responsible pet owner would agree with me on this. If they, like me, feel their pet is the exception and has never/will never cause damage to the property then why not put your money where your mouth is and agree to take full responsibility? Would a prescription recommending this is in the patient’s best interest make this more acceptable? Home is where the heart is. We may struggle at times to find our place in society and having your own little corner of the world to recharge is a necessity. Independence is something we often take for granted; from when we learned to tie our shoelaces to getting your first apartment, nothing is more exhilarating than doing something on your own because you can. World Cup highlights global passion for soccer H
ard to believe it’s all over. After nearly a month of being glued to my laptop, the World Cup has ended with Germany’s fourth title in a 1-0 win over Argentina. After humiliating the Brazilians 7-1 and dumping Portugal 4-0 earlier in the tournament, I was hoping for a championship match filled with goals. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The final pitted the best team in the world against the best player in the world, and, in what shouldn’t be a surprise, the better squad won. Germany had a more balanced attack up front, while Argentina’s game plan seemed to consist of getting the ball to Lionel Messi to see what he could generate. After 113 minutes, Mario Gotze’s volley into the net with seven minutes left in extra time broke the scoreless deadlock and turned him into an instant legend in Deutschland. It wasn’t quite as dramatic as Andres Iniesta’s goal at 116 minute mark in South Africa four years ago that gave Spain the World Cup championship, but it’s close. As always, the World Cup is a great opportunity to see the football (soccer) stars of the world, and this was no exception. I truly enjoyed watching the play of Brazilian star Neymar. At only 22 years old, he’s got a bright future ahead of him. He’s also a member of FC Barcelona, surrounded by other footballing greats like Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi. In four (and a half) matches, he scored four goals and was
one of the more dynamic players on the pitch for Brazil. Every time he touched the ball it seemed as if something magical could happen. However, he broke a vertebrae in a questionable tackle by a Colombian player that ended his tournament. His loss, coupled with the absence of captain Thiago Silva, was a huge blow for the Brazilians when they faced the German squad that crushed them in the semifinal. While Brazil is known as a hotbed of football talent, it was a Colombian who stood out and claimed one of the tournament’s prestigious awards. James Rodriguez claimed the Golden Boot award for the most goals, scoring in every single match for five goals in six games. At only 23, he’ll be a large part of the Colombian’s national program moving forward to Russia in 2018. Of his goals, a volley off his chest from 20 yards out against Uruguay was sublime and Trevor while his run into the penalty area with a chip Crawley past the Japanese goaltender in another match was equally as impressive. After reaching the final in 2010, the Oranje Crush couldn’t make it past Argentina in the semifinal. However, the Dutch did have an impressive tournament and generated a lot of buzz for all the right and wrong reasons. Robin Van Persie scored one of the goals of the tournament early on with a flying header that beat Spain’s goalkeeper in the group stage matches. The tandem of Van Persie and Arjen Robben terrorized opponents all throughout the World Cup, especially in part to the theatrics of the latter.
The Dutch advanced in the knockout stage with a quarterfinal 2-1 win over Mexico, a victory that was sealed with a late-game penalty goal by Robben, after which he admitted to diving. I watched him more closely after that, wondering every time he went down if it was a legitimate foul or not. On the topic of unsportsmanlike play, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez also wrote himself into World Cup lore for unfortunate reasons after biting an Italian opponent—an act that got him a four-month ban from FIFA play. While Canada didn’t qualify for the World Cup (again), our American cousins did, and their performance at the tournament exceeded expectations. Not only did they survive the round robin, but they made it into the knockout stage, defeating Ghana with one of the fastest goals in tournament history 30 seconds into the match. They came within a few minutes of upsetting Portugal and held the powerhouse Germans to only a single goal in a 1-0 loss. In the Round of 16, the Belgians needed extra time against the Americans to advance. The success of the U.S. has helped raise the profile of soccer in a North American sports market that seems to focus on the Big Four—the NHL, NFL, MLB and NBA. The MLS is starting to attract some star players from international leagues and has helped develop homegrown talent for national soccer programs. Everybody likes a winner and with the Americans showing that they can compete at the highest level, hopefully it will be felt across the border as well.
Germany leapfrogs Spain, climbs on top of FIFA world rankings ASSOCIATED PRESS
ZURICH, Switzerland - Germany climbed to the top of the FIFA rankings on Thursday after winning the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, while several European rivals paid the price for their dismal performances in Brazil. Germany, which beat Argentina 1-0 on Sunday to win a fourth World Cup, replaced deposed champion Spain in first place. Argentina jumped three places into second
in the rankings, while the Netherlands soared 12 spots into third after beating host Brazil to clinch third place. Reaching the quarter-finals took Colombia to fourth and Belgium to fifth in FIFA’s monthly rankings, which take into account all 64 World Cup matches. Spain’s title defence surprisingly ended in the group stage, and the team has dropped to eighth place. First-round exits also led to Portugal
going down seven places to 11th, Italy dropping five to 14th and England plummeting 10 spots to 20th. Canada fell eight spots to No. 118, one spot below the Central African Republic and just above Lebanon. The United States fell two places to 15th despite reaching the round of 16 where they lost to Belgium. The Americans were overtaken by the Dutch, Chile and France.

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Giants have hired Troy Ward as their new head coach. Ward takes over the WHL team after three seasons as coach of the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat, the Calgary Flames’ top minor-league affiliate. “It’s an honour,” Ward said in a statement. “You talk about the WHL and the history of the league and everything that goes with it and the exposure, and obviously Vancouver is right there at the top.” Ward takes over for
longtime head coach Don Hay, who left for the Kamloops Blazers. In addition to Vancouver, the Moose Jaw Warriors also announced they hired Tim Hunter as their new head coach. Hunter spent 14 years as an NHL assistant, most recently with the Washington Capitals in 2013. Before that he was an assistant under Ron Wilson with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2008 to 2011. The 53-year-old Calgary native played 815 NHL games with the
Flames, Quebec Nordiques, Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks. He won the Stanley Cup as co-captain of the Flames in 1989. This is the first head coaching job of Hunter’s career. The Portland Winterhawks recently filled their coach vacancy with Jamie Kompon, who replaced Mike Johnston, who left to head up the Pittsburgh Penguins. That leaves the Regina Pats as the only WHL club searching for a bench boss this offseason.

Renney faces new challenges as Hockey Canada CEO Stephen Whyno Canadian Press
Tom Renney joked that on his first day as Hockey Canada president and CEO, his first challenge was finding his new office. Renney, hired earlier this week to lead Hockey Canada, is working out of the same office as his predecessor, Bob Nicholson, but he’ll be tasked with doing a much different job. “When Bob Nicholson took over (in 1998), Hockey Canada needed Bob to turn it into a business, and he did, and he made it a great business,” Mike Babcock said. “So now the grassroots program can be more of a focus because Bob looked after the business. They’ve got to maintain the business, they’ve got to grow grassroots.” Renney’s on-the-job challenges include trying to make hockey more affordable for children to begin playing and for adults to continue. He’ll also be counted on to handle the 2018 Winter Olympics, which may or may not include NHL players. The 59-year-old, who spent the bulk of his professional career as an NHL coach, considers it his “mandate” not to just oversee gold medals but to make hockey enjoyable and protect it as other sports are fighting for athletes’ time and in-
terest. He called that “point one” of his regime and specifically emphasized wanting to introduce hockey to Canadian immigrants. “We have to make the rink a destination,” Renney said. “We want to make sure that leadership in every community across the country is sound and value-driven to make sure that the experience is something that will last a lifetime so that we continue to grow the game.” Babcock had Renney on his coaching staff with the Detroit Red Wings the past two seasons and considers him the right man to lead that charge. “The Canadian game for me is a huge deal,” Babcock said in a phone interview. “The more I’ve been involved the more Canadian you feel and the more you want the game to be Canadian, and in order to do that the grassroots hockey has to be a huge priority. ... Tom can’t get enough. In the summer, I go to the lake, I go water-skiing, I go hunting, I do things. I’m sure Tom’s working on drills this morning. That’s just Tom, he loves it.” In order to get the position, Hockey Canada board of directors chairman Jim Hornell said Renney had to make presentations as part of the interview process. There’s no agreement yet about whether
the NHL will send its players to Pyeongchang, South Korea, and because of that uncertainty Renney - who coached the 1994 Olympic team without pros - said he’d be prepared for either possibility. “I’ve had some experience with that at the very least and I feel comfortable with it,” he told reporters this week. “I would feel more comfortable if we were to continue to play beston-best.” After general manager Steve Yzerman said he

Babcock pointed out that, on the heels of the World Cup and its immense popularity, it’s much easier for kids to put on a pair of spikes and play soccer than it is for his or her family to pay for hockey equipment. That’s a challenge Renney is partially responsible for tackling, even as he believes Hockey Canada is doing a pretty good job with programs benefiting the underprivileged.

HOYLAKE, England - On a day when Tiger Woods made an impressive return to the majors, Rory McIlroy got off to another blistering start at the British Open. Now, can McIlroy keep it going? The two-time major champion took advantage of prime scoring conditions to shoot a 6-under 66 on Thursday, putting him in what has become a familiar position: the first-round lead. McIlroy has played the opening round in a cumulative 55-under par this year, including three 63s and a course-record 64 at last week’s Scottish Open. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a nonsmoker who has asthma and early heart disease. When I am at family events and outdoor concerts or entering stores and public places, I often find myself exposed to secondhand smoke from cigarettes and cigars. Even though I make every attempt to avoid this smoke, it is sometimes impossible. This results in my having burning eyes, difficulty breathing, a wet cough, etc. At times, I’ve needed oral and inhaled steroids because the inflammation was so severe. I am not particularly welcome in some circles because my attempts to avoid the smoke are seen as “grandstanding” or being a ridiculous jerk. My only other option is to stay home and miss out on time with family and the concerts, festivals and other outdoor activities I enjoy. Smokers clearly know the dangers of what they are putting in their lungs, and I respect their right to do so. Why is there no consideration or respect for those of us who cannot tolerate the effects of tobacco smoke? When did we become the bad guys who just need to suck it up (literally) or stay home? I’m not trying to start a war between smokers and nonsmokers here. I am simply looking for intelligent, viable solutions to a common problem. -- Gasping for Breath Dear Gasping: We know how difficult this must be for you. Nonetheless, smoking is still permitted at most outdoor venues, in which case, there is little you can do other than avoid them or wear a surgical mask to act as a filter. At family functions, you can suggest that the smokers be assigned a specific area so they can puff in peace and the rest of you can breathe more easily. Your family and close friends should be told about your medical difficulties and even given information so they understand you have a serious problem that should not be taken lightly. (Information is available through the American Lung Association at lung.org.) Dear Annie: I’d like to express my sincerest thanks to you for your column. There are times when a person my age (85) becomes a little depressed and is in need of a bit of comic relief. Reading the letters that you receive from some of your readers renders a whole new meaning to the word “dysfunctional.” If I were on the Nobel Prize nominating committee, I would certainly vote for you in the category of “Patience and Compassion.” It’s sometimes difficult for me to understand how some of these people can actually manage in this world. Keep up the good work. -- M. in Montreal Dear M.: Your lighthearted letter brightened our day, although we will say that one reason we write this column is to help those who want an unbiased opinion about situations they cannot wrap their heads around. We know that it often takes an objective viewpoint to see the forest for the trees, because when you are in the middle of a crisis -- unhappy, confused and hurt -- it helps to have someone in your corner to steer you in a more focused direction. We hope we can provide that for our readers. And if it holds your interest at the same time, even better. Thanks for writing. Dear Annie: After reading the responses to “Bob in North Carolina,” I agree that some women who present the news wear sexy clothes. I also believe that many of them debase themselves because they need the job. It’s a shame women can’t be appreciated for their professional talents alone. But, that said, what’s good for the gander is good for the goose. So let’s get rid of those wrinkly, white-haired tie-and-suit men and spice up the news with younger guys showing off their arm muscles and chest hair. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products,” “Where I prefer to receive information about companies,” and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise.” At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message.
