Rimbey teen selected as new rodeo queen By Treena Mielke

Queen: Martina Holtkamp waves to the crowd at the Rimbey Rodeo after being crowned Miss Rimbey Rodeo 2014. The runner-up in the competition is Witaney Block. Danielle Rowley Photo

Martina Holtkamp, the only Rimbey contestant among the four girls vying for the title, is this year’s Rimbey rodeo queen. The amiable 16-year-old, who is going into Grade 12 at Rimbey Senior/Junior High School is thrilled with the win. “I have always looked up the queen and it is an honour to represent my own community as the 2014 rodeo queen and promote rodeo in Rimbey as well as other communities.” The competition for rodeo queen involved public speaking and horsemanship as well as helping out at various events related to the rodeo. The contestants were also part of the grand march at the rodeo and the rodeo parade. The competition did present a few challenges, but for Holtkamp the most challenging part came minutes before the announcement was made. “I was so nervous,” she said. “I think that was the hardest part.” The newly crowned queen gives credit to her horse Silver, whom she borrowed from her neighbour Travis Jordan for her success with the horsemanship pattern competition. “That horse was a super star,” she said. The competition for rodeo queen

was a positive, interesting experience, she said. “I think it teaches you to be more friendly and outgoing and it also gives you a chance to get to know the other girls. And it increases your confidence.” The teen, who is the oldest daughter of Joe and Linda Holtkamp, thanks her family, friends and community including sponsor Holly’s Greenhouse, Diane Weening, Lyn Johnson and The Jordan family for their support. “I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said. Holtkamp belongs to the Kansas Ridge Riders Gymkhana Group and enjoys barrel racing and pole riding. When she is not participating with her horse she enjoys snowboarding, rugby and simply being outdoors. And she loves riding. “My four little sisters and I all ride together,” she said. “We have a long line of rodeo queens coming up,” she added with a laugh. Witaney Block, a 16-year-old Grade 10 student from Edson was runner-up. Block was selected as last year’s Alberta High School Rodeo Queen. Also competing for Miss Rimbey Rodeo was Kaitlin Malterer from Ponoka and KC Goller from Leduc.

Keep wild rose on license plates The wild rose continues to flourish abundantly in our roadside ditches and spill out unexpectantly in cracks and crannies everywhere. It is a beautiful much loved flower. The amazing thing Treena Mielke about the wild rose is On The Other Side that it appears so fragile and delicate, but it isn’t. In fact, it flourishes in this province, and doesn’t need to be cajoled or coaxed or coddled into blooming. It just does! Fittingly the wild rose is our provincial flower. Sadly, the symbol of the wild rose and the slogan ‘wild rose country’ is to be deleted from our license plates. Why? That’s just crazy. Take away our wild rose! That’s wrong, just wrong! The debate over the new proposed license plates is ongoing and so it should be. Albertans, less than impressed with the government’s decision to delete the wild rose symbol from our license plates, are up in arms. Albertans have every right to be annoyed. The move, by the provincial government, is ridiculous. We are a province where the wild rose flourishes and the fact that we will no longer be able to boast about that delightful fact on our license plates seems ludicrous. Deleting the wild rose symbol because of a seeming conflict with our Wild Rose Party seems petty and small. The Wild Rose Party, itself, was clever in com-

ing up with a name befitting the province in which it lives, as was The Alberta Party. However, it seems Alberta.ca will be allowed. But, political leanings aside, Wild Rose Country as a slogan certainly wins over the slogan Alberta.ca. Wild Rose Country conjures up images of a warm and welcoming province, a little wild and untamed perhaps, but ripe with potential and growth and prosperity. Alberta.ca is simply blah! To add insult to injury, Albertans are going to have to fork over five bucks just to get these new plates that they didn’t want in the first place. In the big scheme of things, license plates and their logos should probably not be given a huge priority when it comes to things to complain about. It is true that education and health care are constant bones of contention, and rightly so, but, it seems, as is the case with most things, always

there are those who are worse off. And even though we live through what seems like endless winters, suffer through drought or high water levels, depending on the whims of mother nature, overall, things are good. But, still there are some things that simply shouldn’t be messed with. Things like the wild rose on our license plates. It needs to stay there. Taking it away is like removing the Flames from Calgary or the Oilers from Edmonton. Albertans need to feel proud that they live in wild rose country. They need to remember that in spite of governments that change with the wind, making promises too easily broken, no apparent ceiling on the price of food and gas and an economy that fluctuates without warning, some things remain constant and good. Like flowers. Like the wild rose!

Richard Nixon’s summer from hell It was 40 summers ago that Nixon’s world finally crashed

TORONTO, ON - It was 40 summers ago that Richard Nixon’s world finally crashed. On July 24, 1974, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that he must hand over 64 subpoenaed tapes to the Watergate special prosecutor. On August 9, he became the only president to resign from office. In between, the House Judiciary Committee voted three articles of impeachment, the details of the “smoking gun” tape became public, and senators from his own Republican party told him that he’d lose an impeachment trial. So, with his credibility shattered and his political base shredded, Nixon accepted the inevitable. But how did such an astute politician get into this jam? Even today, Watergate provokes a kind of bewilderment. First off, why did it happen at all? By the time the ill-fated burglary took place in June 1972, it was clear that Nixon’s Democratic re-election opponent would be George McGovern. And it was also obvious that, barring the dramatically unforeseen, Nixon would win handily. So why run any gratuitous risks? While there were several contributory factors, the most important came down to Nixon’s own personality. Along with his undisputed smarts, there was a large helping of insecurity and resentment, even paranoia. Never averse to the rough side of politics - and believing that John F. Kennedy had (literally) stolen the 1960 election from him - he wasn’t going to be caught flatfooted again. He’d play just as dirty as he expected his opponents to. In fact, as a veteran poker player, he’d see them and raise them. Still, for a ruthlessly unscrupulous operator, Nixon was surprisingly inept as the crisis unfolded. Why, for instance, did he allow Archibald Cox to be

appointed special prosecutor? Cox, after all, Pat Murphy was a partisan Kennedy Guest Columnist Democrat who promptTroy Media ly staffed his operation with similarly inclined lawyers. To put it mildly, their investigation wasn’t going to cut Nixon any slack or show any deference to assertions of presidential prerogative. Granted, Cox was the personal choice of Nixon’s attorney general designate, Elliot Richardson, and can be considered the price paid for Richardson’s confirmation by the Democrat-controlled Senate. But that merely begs the question of why Nixon picked Richardson as attorney general in the first place. Whatever his talents, Richardson was a moderateto-liberal New Englander with impeccable establishment connections. As such, he was hardly “a safe pair of hands” for a guilty president who was widely disliked, even loathed, by that same establishment. Then there’s the tapes. When their existence was first revealed in July 1973, why didn’t Nixon immediately destroy them on the grounds of protecting executive privilege? Presumably, he knew what story they’d tell. Yes, such an action would’ve generated an uproar, leading to calls for resignation or impeachment. But that’s what happened anyway. And at least Nixon would’ve been spared the corrosive drip drop of the following 12 months, not to mention the fact that there’d be no corroborating evidence of his attempt to obstruct justice. At minimum, his chances of beating impeachment would have been substantially

better than they were a year later. Perhaps he didn’t believe he’d ever be forced to surrender the tapes. And, incredible as it sounds, it’s even been suggested that he thought they’d be in some way exculpatory. There is, however, another way of looking at it. With respect to both his political environment and who he was, Nixon was trapped. For one thing, he always faced opposition majorities in both the House and the Senate. And with 1970s television news coming from just three networks, all of whom took their headline cues from the liberal New York Times, what we’d now call the “national conversation” wasn’t favourably disposed towards him. Thin ice was never more than a major misstep away. Further compounding this situational weakness, Nixon craved acceptance from his “betters.” He was the resentfully aspirational outsider who desperately wanted to be a member of the club. So appointing someone like Richardson was an attempt at ingratiation. And the level of defiance that would have been required for destroying the tapes was simply beyond him. Nixon was guilty of attempting to subvert the law in order to conceal a petty political crime. But the zeal with which he was pursued was driven by more than an abstract search for justice. When there’s blood in the water, it’s never a pretty sight. Troy Media columnist Pat Murphy worked in the Canadian financial services industry for over 30 years. Originally from Ireland, he has a degree in history and economics.

Lots of action for crowd at the 2014 Rimbey rodeo

Rodeo action: Thomas Thompson was one of the mutton bustin’ competitors at the three-day Rimbey Rodeo. The young cowboys had a great time hanging on as best they could, while an appreciative audience cheered them on. Danielle Rowley Photo

By Treena Mielke The Rimbey rodeo held July 11, 12 and 13 was full of all the excitement, thrills and spills of a good old-fashioned hometown rodeo. The sun smiled benevolently on Rimbey for all three days of rodeo action, and both participants and the crowd filling the bleachers did not have their spirits or their clothes dampened by unexpected showers. April Mclean, a member of the rodeo committee, said there was a good mix of entrants this year. “We had lots of rough stock riders this year so that was good,” she said. “And the weather was great.” In the local rodeo held July 11, Jacy Howlete was first and Brittany Albers placed second. Tanner Lawton and Myron Vick won the wild cow milking and Joe Holtkamp and Stan Goetz took second. The relay race was won by Brittany Domasch and Lacey Sheridan and Martina Holtkamp and Joe Holtkamp took second. Courtney Holtkamp and Jada Holtcamp won the 11 to 15 barrels. The 10 and under barrels was won by Mattison

Youngsters excited over unexpected reply By Treena Mielke Two little boys were super excited a few weeks ago when they went to the Rimbey post office and discovered that Canadian astronaut, Commander Chris Hadfield had sent them personalized, autographed photos. Earlier the children, four-year-old Daniel Moran and his two-year-old brother Noah had written a letter, with the help of their mom, Carina to Commander Hadfield. The reply was an unexpected and delightful surprise. “My boys could not contain their excitement and opened the package at the post office,” said Carina Moran. “They have followed his journey (both

He has become an unexpected, yet significant role model in their lives.” Moran, who also is mom to an infant son, said she is thrilled as well that Hadfield took the time to send the pictures to her boys. “It is our own feel good story and we would love for everyone to know what an outstanding individual Chris Hadfield is, and the positive impact he has on little minds.” The Moran family live near Meridian Beach by Gull Lake. The boys have their pictures framed and in their rooms. Four-year-old Daniel has decided he wants to be an astronaut firefighter when he grows up.

Realistic exotic animals inhabit Echo Valley Ranch By Treena Mielke The exotic animals on Adolf and Lillian Adam’s Echo Valley Ranch might not be real, but for an unsuspecting visitor, they are real enough. In fact, the farm itself, is like an animal wax museum, with full sized figures of zebras, giraffes, elephants, dinosaurs, buffaloes, polar bears, penguins and a variety of winged creatures as well as almost every other animal one can imagine. The Fiberglass animals line the driveway of Echo Valley Ranch and seem to meander about throughout the farm site, popping up unexpectantly everywhere and anywhere. Adolf Adam, his 11-year-old grandson Colton in tow, gave the Review a guided tour of the place recently, starting off with a statue of a grandpa dressed in overalls with with a cigar clamped firmly in his mouth. Adam jokingly said it was a statue he created of himself taking a break from all his creative endeavors.

Adam’s unusual collection of animals, both exotic and domestic began several years ago. The only difference is at the beginning they were not all made out of stucco wire and fiberglass and copied from a picture. They were all real. It seems Adam’s love of the unusual was born in him. He recalled his first pet as being a chipmunk that he carried in his pocket to church. The practice continued until well meaning adults put a stop to it. In later years, he enjoyed spending time with Al Oeming at his game farm near Edmonton. The whole family became acquainted with the Walt Disney filming crew, as well. Adam was a dairy farmer for 30 years, but the passion for creatures of the wild never left him, and when he and his wife Lillian and their three sons Lorne, Shane and Allan moved to the Rimbey area in 1979, he gave that passion full rein. Story and pics continue on pages 11, 12 and 18.

Colton Adams, 11, stands with a life size figure created by his grandfather, Adolf Adams. Treena Mielke Photo

Once again the Bentley & District Ag Society fair Horticulture Convener Dorothy Sherwood is accepting nominations for Best Dressed Town Yards in Bentley. There are three categories - Best Front Yard, Best Back Yard, and Best Whole Yard. Entries are judged based on the general arrangement and cleanliness and overall aesthetic appeal, flowers, vegetable gardens, trees/shrubbery and lawns as well as any special features in the yard. Judging the yards is Martha Krause from Bluffton who is a registered, qualified judge. Last year not as much interest was shown. “Hopefully with the advertising, I have put up posters around town, and it is on the Internet, people will get interested again and enter,” Sherwood says. Originally the cut off date for entering Best Yards was July 31 but that has been extended to August 3. There are cash prizes for Best Yards donated by T&S Lilies and by Greg & Sandy Beavis. This year a photographer will take pictures while the judging is being done on the morning of August 6 so photos can be posted along with the horticulture displays in the Bentley curling rink for the general public to see during August 7 and 8. Spectators’ admission is always free. Continued on Page 17

Anticipation: Ardenn Green, 5, from Sylvan Lake, Coral Tuck, 4, from Innisfail and Sylvia Green, 2, from Sylvan Lake wait with anticipation for the parade as it makes it’s way down Main Street. The streets were lined with people who enjoyed watching the parade on the bright, sunny morning of July 12. Also pictured is Meagan Wolfe wearing a cowboy hat and another unidentified youngster.

Best dressed yards Continued from Page 10 Nominees will be contacted for permission ahead of time before any yards are entered. Give Dorothy a call at 403-748-4122 to enter your own yard or to nominate someone else’s. There are four entries so far Sherwood says, but more are desirable. This year, fourth year show convener Dorothy Sherwood, is also hoping to see an increase in overall entries in the Horticulture Bench Exhibits displays. There were lots of reasons for numbers being down by as much as two-thirds last year including poor weather, the late growing season, too much rain, hail storms, and just general apathy she feels. “Last year was a bad year (for numbers of entries),” she says. “I think because of the hail in Bentley and the bad weather (just before the fair).” There are categories for vegetables, flowers, fruits, table centerpieces, and floral and basket arrangements. Not all spe-

cial prizes could be awarded last year as there were not enough qualifying entries. Entries for horticulture bench exhibits are accepted at the Bentley curling rink on the morning of August 6 from 9:30 to 11:30. Exhibitors are asked to bring their entries with entry tags filled out and to ensure that their entries exactly conform to the category being entered. The theme for the fair this year is Salute to the Bentley & District Fire Department. Winners of all ‘Special Prizes’ will be formally announced and prizes presented on Friday, August 8 at the curling rink at 12:30 p.m. For more horticulture show information call Dorothy at 403-748-4122, check the Bentley Ag Society website, posters, or the fair booklets left around town. Other bench exhibit categories on display for the fair include baking, crafts, art, photography, sewing, and school exhibits. Each has its own convener.

Echo Valley Continued from Page 9 His farm, the Echo Valley Ranch, overlooking the Blindman River Valley, was once filled with exotic animals including pygmy and angora goats, four horned sheep, donkeys, buffalo and several varieties chickens. Those were the good years, he said. He and his wife recall many happy memories of those days, as their family grew, and they all enjoyed spending time with the animals. They recalled how their sons would tie a donkey to a cart and go for fun and exciting rides. However, exotic animals are expensive to feed and house and at the end of the day, reality dictated replacing the real animals with Fibreglass figures which would be cheaper in the long run, and, in their own way, just as entertaining. “They don’t need no fences or cages,” said Adam with a smile. “The exotic animals took a lot of looking after.” And so began a new journey of creating his own animals. “All he needs is a picture out of a book,” said Lillian, adding he uses fiberglass and stucco wire to complete his creations. During the last decade, Allan has created wonderful life size animals including his own version of Jurassic park. The creation helped earn Adolf and Lillian an award for the Best Country Garden by the Agricultural Services Board, County of Ponoka in 1996. As well as the weird and wonderful assortment of animals Allan has created using little more than imagination and Fiberglass, he has built a miniature town including replicas of a school, church, elevator and barn and much more of days gone by. Much of Adam’s display lights up at night, making it even more spectacular. Seeing is believing and the Adams encourages visitors to come out and see for themselves the wild and unusual world that one man’s creativity has brought to life. “We don’t mind visitors. They are more than welcome,” said Adams. “We want people to stop in.” Echo Valley Ranch is located 1.8 kilometers west of Hwy. 20 on the Medicine Lake Road. It is the second farm to the south.
