City bucks fire ban It’s not quite that dry here, says Fire Chief Ian Baikie Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Paul Rudan/The MiRRoR

Provincial government and BC Hydro bigwigs were in Campbell River Friday morning to officially begin construction on the $1 billion project to rebuild the John Hart Generating Station with a 2.1 kilometre tunnel and an underground power plant. Pictured here (from) left are Comox Valley MLA Don McRae, Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett and the brand new president and CEO of BC Hydro Jessica McDonald. Read the full story in Friday’s Mirror.

Campbell River is allowing campfires within the city limits despite a fire ban imposed by the province last week. The Coastal Fire Centre banned all campfires and open burning on Crown lands and at provincial campsites and parks as of last Thursday. But Fire Chief Ian Baikie said last weekend’s rainfall, cooling temperatures, and rainy weather forecast make a fire ban in Campbell River unnecessary. “The provincial ban just didn’t follow the science. We just didn’t have the dryness that usually accompanies a campfire ban,” Baikie said Continued on Page 2

Monday. “Our experience is we don’t have any problems in our community with fires starting or growing right now.” There have been a few minor bark mulch fires, but those have been quickly put out before they’ve been able to spread. Baikie said the humidity at the airport was 72 per cent on Monday and humidity levels don’t typically become dangerous until they hit around 30 per cent. With three millimetres of rain between last Friday and Saturday, the region’s fire rating has also decreased from high to

moderate. Baikie said, in speaking with the province, it was apparent that the province’s fire ban had more to do with conditions in other areas of B.C. than on Vancouver Island. He was told that fire officials are so busy battling fires in the Interior that it’s left little resources on the Island. The city, on the other hand, has its own municipal firefighters available should a fire break out. Baikie can’t recall the last time the city has allowed campfires during a provincial ban, but this year is an anomaly. “We really hesitate to be dif-

ferent from the province, but in this case it’s the right thing to do,” Baikie said. “I know people here enjoy their beach fires so I hesitate to impose a fire ban unless absolutely necessary.” Baikie will be monitoring the weather day-by-day and things could change if there is a dry spell of five or more consecutive days. In the meantime, fires are allowed within the city limits as long as they are no more than 24 inches round (60 centimetre) and built away from combustibles and within an outdoor fireplace, barbecue, fire pit, fully enclosed burner or similar device.

www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

The Coastal Fire Centre’s fire ban, however, is still in effect outside the city limits and is expected to remain in place until Oct. 15, or until a decision is made otherwise. The ban prohibits campfires and open burning of any size, as well as the use of fireworks, burning barrels, tiki torches and sky lanterns. The prohibition does not apply to CSA-rated or ULCrated cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to a portable campfire apparatus that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, as long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

Changes to waste disposal fees and charges are now in effect in Campbell River and the Comox Valley. The minimum charge has gone from $4 for loads less than 60 kilograms to $6 for loads not exceeding 100kg. Soil and turf charges went from $5 to $15/ tonne for loads greater than 100kg. Loads less than 100kg are charged the minimum load fee. Drywall is an exception. Tipping fees dropped from $200 to $110/tonne (the construction and demolition debris rate) as of Feb. 14. Increased landfill diversion — largely in construction and soil-related waste — means revenue collected through tipping fees has decreased. To address declining tonnage and higher service costs, the regional district has reduced overall program costs, and focused expenses on core operational needs and environmental protection. To meet financial requirements for the next five critical years, increased tipping fees and diversion program changes have been necessary.

Cougar warnings posted near Sportsplex

Warning signs are up along the trail behind the Sportsplex after a teenager was chased by a cougar. Last Thursday afternoon, a teenage boy was skateboarding down the bike path between South Alder Street and Rockland Road when he encountered the cat. As the teen approached the foot bridge near the trail’s Rockland entrance, he spotted the cougar and that’s when the cougar decided to follow. “He was chased and he ran out or skateboarded out to Rockland Road,” said Gord Gudbranson, North Island conservation officer. “He waved down a passing motorist

who gave the boy a ride back to the Sportsplex.” The incident was reported to Sportsplex staff who called conservation officers at approximately 3:15 p.m. Gudbranson said RCMP and natural resource officers cordoned off both sides of the bike path as well as trails behind Springbok Road and off South Dogwood Street. Cougar hounds and conservation officers searched the wooded area between Rockland and Dogwood as well as the trails between South Alder and Candy Lane but the cougar was nowhere to be found. A warning sign that a cougar was spotted in the area is posted at the foot bridge on the bike trail

and conservation officers are asking anyone who sees a cougar in the area to report it. Gudbranson is also asking people to be vigilant in the Petersen and ERT area after a 14-yearold boy was stalked by a cougar on a trail between the ERT Road and Hopkin Road the evening

of July 9. That incident has not been linked to last Thursday’s cougar encounter. Gudbranson said anyone who goes walking, running, or cycling in a greenbelt – or in an area where there are deer – should be aware that cougars could be in the area.

He said that just prior to the incident along the bike path, a couple of deer had been seen near the trail. “People should always be diligent when walking in green spaces,” Gudbranson said. “Cougars are very curious and they follow people more than we know – they’re very quiet. If people do see a cougar, they should maintain eye contact, never turn away from the cougar and run, and make yourself as big as possible. Seniors’ centre merry-go-round continues Overboard as city considers two locations for lease ferry rescue Kristen Douglas

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Campbell River seniors could end up back at the indoor mall. The city is looking into leasing opportunities for a new seniors’ centre and among the options is the Campbell River Commons. “Three of the options that will be brought forward to council as lease options include two potential locations at the Campbell River Com-

mons Shopping Mall, at 1400 Ironwood Street,” said Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manager of parks and recreation. The third option is to lease office space in the existing Seymour Pacific building which is expected to be vacated by the end of the month when Seymour Pacific moves into its new headquarters next door. Milnthorp said the city is in discussions with the respective owners to determine costs and

logistics. “Staff are currently reviewing lease terms and rates along with the required improvements and costs associated with these options,” Milnthorp said. The seniors previously leased space at the Campbell River Commons free of charge until that agreement came to an end in 2013. Since then the seniors have been bounced around from venue to venue and are currently

splitting time between the Sportsplex and the Community Centre. The seniors society has asked city council several times for help in securing its own building. The city is in the midst of looking at possible options for purchasing a building for the seniors as well as leasing options. Milnthorp said the city is “in the process of obtaining additional information on properties for a more in-depth report to council at the

committee of the whole meeting on August 26.” The city is also considering building a seniors centre as either an addition to the Community Centre or adjacent to the building. If the city does go that route, it’s expected to cost between $3.5 million and $5.7 million. A 15,000 square foot addition, which has been requested by the seniors, would be in the range of $5.25 million to $5.7 million.

Two BC Ferries workers rescued a woman who jumped off the Cortes Island ferry Tuesday morning. According to BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall, two passengers witnessed the female passenger jump off the Tachek around 8:25 a.m. The boat was en route to Quadra Island. They immediately alerted ferry staff who stopped the vessel and dispatched a two-person crew in the emergency response boat. “They got her out in about 10 minutes – she was conscious and responsive,” said Marshall, who credited the crew and the emergency training they receive. “They did a fabulous job.” The woman was taken directly to Heriot Bay on Quadra where an ambulance crew awaited. The Powell River Queen was also delayed for the ambulance which took the woman to Campbell River hospital. Her condition is unknown.

River Spirit and BraveHearts dragon boat teams are grateful to all our sponsors and volunteers who helped to make Race the River 2014 another huge success. Workers check out the new suspension bridge over Menzies Creek on the popular Ripple Rock Trail which re-opened last month.

Re-crossing the Menzies The Ripple Rock Trail, with about 6,500 users per year, has a new bridge and new trail surface. The work was completed and the trail reopened last month. The section of the trail crossing Menzies Creek, a suspension bridge, had been wearing and was under fatigue. In early 2014, a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations review of the bridge showed safety and structural deficiencies. Patch work was done for the interim until the decision was made to replace the suspension bridge with a more solid structure. Tender processes were initiated for the bridge and its installation. Heavy Metal Marine Ltd, based out of Victoria, was awarded the contract to make the 53-foot aluminum pedestrian bridge McGrath Contracting Ltd, from Campbell River, was awarded the work for site access improvements and to install the bridge on concrete abutments. Given

the bridge crossing is about 850 metres into the trail, logistics were needed to safely get to it. BC Hydro has a power line right of way and with private lands in the area the trail was unable to be re-located. The trail also had some issues with culverts not functioning properly and causing trail erosion. Using a helicopter to sling the bridge was considered but it had safety concerns and in the end was not practical due to the presence of the hydro lines and tall trees. It was deemed best to use the existing trail. As part of the project, the contractor was to re-ditch, install new culverts and cap the road with gravel crush, and BC Hydro donated $7,000 for the gravel.

“BC Hydro has provided support in the past for the Ripple Rock trail system, it made sense to do so again given the proximity to our power line that goes to Quadra Island,” says BC Hydro spokesperson, Stephen Watson. “We provided funds towards the gravel work, and we moved the power pole guy wires to allow for access and for the improvements to take place.” Watson says worker safety is extremely important when working around power lines, particularly with heavy equipment, and it was well considered for this project. “My goal since arriving here five years ago was to upgrade this trail to make it a real showcase for the community,” says

District Recreation Officer Duncan Mactavish. “One in which residents can take visitors to a very historic site and see views that are pretty special. “Ever yt hing came together for this upgrade work and I am proud of what we’ve been able to achieve. It looks fantastic and I encourage people to come check it out.” The total project work budget was $60,000. In 2010, through the Job Opportunities Program and with funding from Island Coastal Economic Trust, over $120,000 was put into the trail by constructing boardwalks, bridges, picnic tables, and the installation of stairs at the end of the trail to get visitors up the rock cliff just before the end of the trail.

First Nations and Coast Forest Products have an new understanding which could lead to more logging and forestry opportunities for both.

Forestry agreement signed

The Nanwakolas Council and the Coast Forest Products Association have signed a landmark memorandum of understanding (MOU) today in a move that will further strengthen their longstanding collaborative partnership. Aimed to increase Nanwakolas Council’s participation in coastal forestry and strengthen security of tenure and fibre supply for the industry, the MOU is a significant milestone in further defining the partnership over the next three years “We are pleased to be signing this agreement with Coast Forest and its member companies. Our Nations have been working collaboratively with the forest industry at both strategic and political levels for some time now, not only to build much needed certainty on the land base, but also to help ensure that our

communities are able to share in the benefits and opportunities that the industry brings,” says Dallas Smith, president of Nanwakolas Council. “This relationship has evolved from adversarial to one of respect and that shares mutual priorities – we have captured this in the MOU. We will continue to work together to help advise the Province on the development of sustainable but economically viable forest policy that will continue to see this resource help create jobs and contribute to the economy for generations to come.” The MOU outlines several key deliverables that both the Council and Coast Forest will address in the coming months. This includes working with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation to secure

additional forest tenure and increase revenue sharing agreements so that Nanwakolas Council member Nations receive increased forest revenue, jobs and direct participation in forest planning and operations. “Coast Forest and its member companies rely on security of tenure and fibre supply in order to operate and provide livelihoods to more than 38,000 people throughout the province,” says Rick Jeffery, President and CEO of Coast Forest Products Association. “The signing the MOU today is significant. Not only will it align the interests of Nanwakolas and Coast Forest members to deliver the benefits of developing a sustainable, renewable forest resource but it is symbolic of the years that industry and First Nations have worked together and of the future we are now forg-

ing together.” The Nanwakolas and Coast Forest intend to present the province with options that will provide more jobs, revenue, capacity building, shared decision-making, and improved resource management. Following this, a final, definitive agreement will be made with the intent that all aspects of the agreement will be implemented within one to two years. Our View

Local athletes enjoyed good Games Months of planning and organizing came down to four days of passion and enthusiasm for thousands of athletes, coaches and volunteers at the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo this past weekend. By all accounts, it was a successful, well-organized Games of which Nanaimo’s organizing committee should be proud. The accommodations team found space for nearly 4,000 athletes and coaches to sleep in dozens of empty schools, while the transportation committee organized the province’s largest temporary fleet of buses to transport the teens and coaches to their events across the city.

Security detail kept athletes, coaches and spectators safe, while parking attendants kept lanes clear for emergency personnel. Nearly 39,000 meals were prepared to feed hungry athletes to ensure they were well-nourished for competition in track and field, baseball, lacrosse, water sports and more – all overseen by another army of volunteers. Nanaimo stepped up to the plate in a big way this weekend – even those who just watched from the sidelines should be proud of the effort put in by their friends and neighbours. Any of those volunteers will probably tell you, that

despite the heat on Friday and Saturday, the long nights of preparation and execution, and the stress of putting on a province-wide event, it was all worth it. It was worth it to see the happiness on the athletes faces – many from Campbell River – as they raced for the finish line or sunk that last basket before the buzzer. Those volunteers provided a lifelong experience for the young athletes – one that Olympic great Simon Whitfield can attest will continue in their memories and possibly drive them to further greatness in the world of sport and beyond. – Nanaimo News-Bulletin

More Duffys and Wallins

I recently read about the salaries being paid out to our regional district representatives. I can now see why they want to increase their mandate to four years instead of three. Salaries of $30,000 to $67,000 a year for a part-time job make me wonder what their hourly wage must be? I personally believe these three people should be totally embarrassed. Knowing how greedy some people can be, I know I am being naive. After paying over $900 as an old age pensioner on my house taxes I am irked to say the least to see it going to line my area directors’ pockets. Many people in our area work 40 hours per week at hard and tedious jobs, and do not make that sum of money. If our area reps had any sense of community pride they would vote to have their wages cut to come in line with the hours they work. What is enough? Once the snout hits the public trough it seems there is no end to the greed. I am not going to comment on municipal salaries as I am in Area C, but the above criticism goes out to all of them. There is obviously no shame when it comes to a free for all at the tax payers expense. I guess there are more Mike Duffys and Pamela Wallins around than I thought. Province is back in black, but still deep in debt

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

When the audited public accounts confirmed a $353 million surplus for the last fiscal year, B.C. Liberal political staff were quick to remind reporters of the NDP’s main theme from last year’s election campaign. Pages of election quotes from almost every NDP MLA were waiting to be distributed. It was a “bogus budget,” one of the more polite tags applied to the government’s pre-election fiscal plan. “It underestimates the costs in a whole bunch of ministries and we’re going to have to review that because all of the decisions that we propose in our platform will have to be implemented,” said then-leader Adrian Dix, describing the NDP’s plans to tax and spend more. Skeena MLA Robin Austin targeted

health care in the budget debate: “Bearing in mind that our population is actually increasing, bearing in mind that our population is aging, I think it’s very unrealistic to think we can actually limit health care expenditures to 2.7 per cent.” As it turned out, health care spending grew by just over two per cent. It still went up by $360 million from the previous year, but after annual increases of six or seven per cent had become the norm, this is quite an achievement. New agreements remain to be negotiated with doctors and nurses, so we’re unlikely to see the same cost control results for the current year. Ottawa’s health care transfer payment formula has changed, and increases are to be capped at three per cent a year

by 2016, so this is the kind of spending restraint all provinces are expected to produce. Education was the only other ministry to receive significant extra funding last year, up $299 million despite continuing enrolment decline. Like health, the education budget goes up every year, and these increases, along with strong student performance results, expose the rhetoric of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation about a cash-starved system for what it is. But the biggest fabrication of last year’s election was the “debt free B.C.” slogan emblazoned on the side of Premier Christy Clark’s campaign bus. The public accounts confirm that the province’s total debt rose to just over $60

billion, the latest of a series of increases since 2008. The much-touted balanced budget is on the operating side, while the province continues to pile up debt to pay for the Port Mann mega-project, hospitals, schools and other big infrastructure. Finance Minister Mike de Jong emphasized the difference between capital and operating expenditures. “We’re borrowing to build as opposed to paying for the groceries,” he said. “Debt free B.C.” was not an outright misrepresentation, merely one of the most far-fetched promises ever delivered in the history of B.C. politics. The legislature is to convene in October so the B.C. Liberals can pass a taxation frame

Tragic stories have been flooding the news, but buried beneath it all was a small glimmer of hope. The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, made an announcement that has positive repercussions for thousands of people, both in Canada and overseas. He made a call for Canadian international volunteer co-operation

organizations to submit proposals to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development for funding. It might seem mundane, but it was a huge sigh of relief for volunteers like me, for the 10 Canadian organizations that depend on this funding for their work, and for their colleagues overseas. This particular funding runs on a five-year cycle, and when no call was made in 2013 as

expected, international volunteer co-operation was facing an uncertain future. At times the value of international volunteering is called into question because the impact isn’t clear in terms of percentages and decimal points, but as a former Crossroads International volunteer in Swaziland, I know that measuring impact is not always as simple as collating numbers. I embarked on a sixmonth volunteer man-

date in 2011 and I’ve been consistently amazed with the chain reaction it has had on my life. I volunteered as a Communications and Marketing Advisor with the Family Life Association of Swaziland, a Crossroads partner that is a key provider of rights-based youth-focused sexual and reproductive health in Swaziland. They ensure youth participate in the outcome of their own health through family planning, birth

control, and sexually transmitted infection prevention and treatment. In a country like Swaziland, which has the highest rate of HIV infection in the world, this task is huge. The workload was incredible and the demands were high, so it didn’t take long for me to feel the first impact of the experience. Working here was no cake walk. Swaziland is not an easy country to live in. But you get

From page 8

mortgage. Meanwhile there is more capital debt ahead. The cabinet is expected to green-light the Site C dam on the Peace River this fall, a decade-long project estimated to cost $8 billion.

Along with the public accounts, the finance ministry released a list of surplus land sales. The sale of 50-odd properties, some of them closed schools, netted the provincial treasury about $310 million, which

accounts for most of the surplus. Was this “selling off the family silverware to try and balance the books,” as now-NDP leader John Horgan termed it before the election? It’s certainly not a reve-

nue source to be matched next year.

Fletcher: ‘Selling off the family silverware’ work for the nascent liquefied natural gas industry, which the government hopes will generate the revenues to ultimately pay off the province’s $60-billion

homes over the same number of years that you have owned your vacation property and applied the PRE on those city homes, you will not be able to shelter the entire gain on your cottage.

and life insurance is not an option for paying this tax.

4x10 • Preserving Investors Group Your cottage, or any other the adjusted cost Financial Consultant

vacation property for that matter, can be an important part of your family life – and you might want to leave it to your family. But unless you’re passing assets to your spouse, when you die, you’re deemed to have disposed of all your capital assets at fair market value. If your cottage has appreciated in value, there could be a significant capital gains liability that could force your heirs to sell the cottage. These are some of the options you should consider to reduce the tax bite to your estate and your heirs: • Principal residence exemption (PRE) You are able to make a principal residence exemption claim on either your city home or your vacation property as long as you meet the requirements. If your vacation home increases in value more than your city home on a per year basis, the exemption might be better applied to that property. However, if you have bought and sold several city

base Another option for minimizing the taxable capital gains is to ensure that all additions to the adjusted cost base (ACB) of the property are fully accounted for. The ACB is not increased by sweat equity, only out-ofpocket expenditures – so keep your receipts.

• Gifting during your lifetime Instead of leaving property to your children through your will, you can choose to transfer some or all of it to them during your lifetime – through the outright gift of the property or by making one or more of your children joint owners (with or without you as a joint owner). This option does have a downside because it may trigger an immediate capital gain

• Equalize your estate with insurance One good way to cover capital gains and other estate debts – or to provide an equitable amount of money to your other children should you decide to leave your vacation home to just one child – is with permanent life insurance. The death benefit is usually taxfree and can provide a ready source of cash that could prevent the forced sale of assets – including your cottage – to pay taxes.

It’s a good idea to discuss your cottage tax issues with your legal and financial professional advisors to ensure they co-ordinate with all the other aspects of your financial and estate plan. Artsy kids will have some fun at camp

Kids who love to create can immerse themselves in art at a five-day Art Extravaganza camp at the Campbell River Art Gallery Aug. 11-15. The focus at the camp, for ages 7-12, will be on fun with instructor Laurie Taylor helping students discover and express their individuality while learning new

techniques. The group will work with a wide variety of supplies, including paper, paint, markers and collage, with an emphasis on found and recycled materials. This week of creativity will also include daily outside activities, a field trip, local artistic inspiration and much more.

The cost for gallery members is $175 or $185 for non-members and all supplies are included. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Monday to Friday. FMI, drop by the gallery, call 250-287-2261 or visit www.crartgallery.ca. All Children’s Summer Art Programs are sponsored by Grieg Seafood.

Swan song by definition is a person’s farewell performance or final statement, composition or painting. An ne You ng and Antics Theatre will be producing a Theatrical Reading of “Driving Miss Daisy” by Alfred Uhry at the Maritime Heritage Centre, Aug. 1-2. This theatrical reading marks the occasion of Lorna Pennock’s swan song. Pennock made her stage debut 25 years ago in a play produced by Rivercity Players called

“Circus in the Wind” which Anne Young had the pleasure of directing and it was performed at the Tidemark Theatre. Pennock has never looked back. Her list of plays she performed in are numerous. Over the last 12 years with Antics Theatre, she has performed in a number of plays, but the last few years, because of mobility issues, she has been entertaining audiences with her varied readings at the dinner theatre shows. The audience will tell

you she has impeccable comic timing. Pennock never did a reading at our last show “Opening Night” as her stamina was down. She thought maybe her next performance could be her swan song. Driving Miss Daisy was a play Pennock and Young had discussed, but it never was performed. So it was decided that Driving Miss Daisy would be a perfect piece to do as a reading. Tickets are $20 available at the Flower Shop In Willow Point.

Kathleen W. Cropper It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kathleen W. Cropper on July 14, 2014. Mom was born in Lake Isle, Alberta on September 30, 1922. Kathleen and her family lived in Alberta until the 1940s and then moved as a family to Vancouver, BC. There she met and married the love of her life, Robert Cropper. Dad was employed by MacMillan Bloedel as a Forestry Engineer so their lives took them to remote logging camps up and down the BC Coast; including Menzies Bay and Juskatla in the Islands formerly known as the Queen Charlottes. Mom and Dad retired to the Comox Valley in the early 1970s. Mom had a life-long love of horses and had other hobbies including painting, gardening and rock wall building. She was always adding one more rock to the wall fronting her home. It still stands and will remind us of her every time we pass by it. Upon retirement, my parents started farming; raising cattle, growing strawberries and finally planting an apple orchard and nursery with family friend Pieter Buisman’s help. They grafted and planted more than 3,000 trees and harvested up to 60,000 pounds of apples a year. Following Dad’s passing in 1997, Mom continued to garden and paint and watch her three grand-daughters grow up on her beloved farm, which she didn’t leave until her 89th year. Mom passed peacefully at Golden Grove Care Facility in Willow Point, Campbell River. We cannot be more grateful to the owners and caregivers at Golden Grove for the wonderful care they provided for Kathleen during the year and a half she resided with them. You are at peace, mom, and reunited with your special man, Robert. We will always love you. A Celebration of Life for Kathleen will be held on Saturday, July 26th at 2:30 PM at Kathleen’s farm, Robin Ridge Farm, at 3473 Dove Creek Road, Courtenay.

DEATHS

WINCH, Richard “Bruce It is with great sorrow that we share that Richard “Bruce Winch passed away at his home on July 14, 2014 with his wife Traci Dee at his side. Bruce was self-described as “perfect accompanied with a playful glint in his eye. He had an awesome sense of humour and was incredibly giving and caring with his friends. He would often drop whatever he was doing at home (much to Traci Dee’s consternation) and immediately go assist anyone who needed a hand. He was simply, an amazing man and he will be deeply missed. He leaves his wife Traci Dee, whom he married on the 29th of June, to carry on his memory. Bruce loved to fish and other than Traci Dee; his greatest love was playing pool. He was a regular fixture at the Eagles and it only seems fitting to celebrate his life at the place where he was a regular fixture. FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS

DEATHS

DEATHS

McCONOCHIE, AGNES (NAN) MEEK (nee Hannah) October 26, 1924 - July 15, 2014

Nan passed away on Tuesday, July 15th with her family by her side. She is survived by her daughter Sharon Hastings (John) of Courtenay and her sons John McCabe (Karen) and Kevin McCabe of Courtenay, her step-children, Barbara Arseneau of Nanaimo, Betty Armour (Dave) of Courtenay and Lynda O’Connell (Mike) of Idaho, USA. She is also survived by her brothers Andrew Hannah (Joan), Robert Hannah (Loie) of Maple Ridge and George Hannah of Prince George, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Zaharia (John) of Maple Ridge. Nan will be fondly remembered by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Campbell River Family Services Society has a vacancy for an Accountant. This is a regular, half-time (17.5 hours per week) position. The Accountant oversees the accounting function of the organization, ensuring accurate recording and reporting of financial information and produces financial statements, analyzes financial information and provides advice on financial matters. A professional accounting designation such as CGA or CMA, as well as three (3) years related experience (preferably with a knowledge of non-profit community based programs) are required for this position. This position requires union membership. Wage per current collective agreement. This position is open to male and female applicants. Submit resumes by July 28, 2014 to: C.R. Family Services Society 487-10th Avenue, Campbell River, BC, V9W4E4 Attn: Camille Lagueux, Executive Director Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. No phone calls please.

Nan was a life member of the Royal Purple and held various chairs in the organization. She was always willing to lend a hand and volunteer her time and energy in her community where needed. After retiring Nan and Bill travelled to various countries. They also enjoyed cruising, boating, RVing and curling. One of her greatest thrills was attending the Scot Tournament of Hearts in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1981 to be a cheerleader for her daughter Sharon. Another unforgettable experience was meeting Queen Elizabeth, when she visited Comox. Nan will be remembered for her joy of life and infectious laughter. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nan has requested that there be no service but a private family get together will be held at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined, Nan and the family would appreciate donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Eagle View for their loving kindness and care over Nan’s last year of life. We would also like to thank Casa Loma and Comox Valley Seniors Village for their friendship and care, when she made her home with them. A special thank-you to Doctors Gornall and Ingrey for their compassionate care. No Sad Tears For Me I hope by now that some of the initial pain of my departure has begun to wear away…and that the kind carpet of pleasant memories has started to unroll. I only ask one thing: No sad tears for me, please. Every wonderful, delightful thrill, experience and emotion life has to offer has been mine. So no sad tears for me, please. Rather, recall me with a fond smile as the wife, daughter and friend who shared your laughter, tears and dreams through the years. No sad tears for me, please. I lived a goodly span of years and enjoyed them all. I’ve laughed a lot, cried a little…I’ve seen many sunsets and a few fresh dawns, walked in the April rain and watched the wheat fields roll. I loved a man and was loved in return and walked with the hands of young people in my own. No sad tears for me, please. Think of the happy times; The Christmas mornings, the nieces, nephews, graduations, the Thanksgiving dinners and most of all, remember the thousand of times we were all together as family and friends. On Christmas Eve if there is a small star in the sky, look at it with love and let it come into your heart…and remember me. No sad tears for me, please. A woman never really dies while there are those on Earth who loved her. A woman is never gone as long as there are those who remember her with fondness…and as long as her memory evokes a wistful smile. All who have loved, and who have been loved, have earned a piece of immortality… No sad tears for me, please Author Unknown

have signed a Partnership Agreement for the trails in the Snowden Demonstration Forest. This means that the RCCC will provide trail maintenance services and ensure the trails are safe to ride and MoTCA will ensure that the RCCC is included in any recreation decisions that may affect the Snowden Forest. Snowden is also the home of The Campbell River 50 km Trail Challenge. This annual event features some of the best trails we have to offer and is a test of any rider’s stamina, both physical and mental. Comprised of two loops, the actual loop length is 27km for a total of 54km.

Pump House The Pump House Trail was the first true mountain biker’s area in Campbell River, built by riders for riders. Suitable for the beginner with a little experience, yet with some challenging sections for the more seasoned rider.

turing both road cycling and mountain biking. The purpose of the club is to promote bicycling as well as encourage and facilitate touring, races, bicycle outings, and all forms of recreational bicycling activities. The club hosts group rides, trail days, organized rides to other communities, and good times for all. The River City Cycling Club has a unique working relationship with BC Parks land managers and works directly with them for mutual stewardship and maintenance goals of the existing trails that exist in the parks area.

Riding on the Wet Coast If you have to ride during periods of sustained precipitation, choose trails that are rocky and well drained. The Pumphouse trails are well suited to wet conditions and are underrated for their fun factor. Check them out if you haven’t been in there in a while. Enjoy the

Riding Areas

Snowden Demonstration Forest

In Campbell River we have three main riding areas, Snowden, Pump House and The Beaver Lodge, and a couple of lesser used areas, Menzies Mt., McIvor Lake and Woods Creek. There are numerous other areas of trails, however most are not bike friendly, either because of terrain or use restrictions. We are fortunate that our trails remain snow free most years except for a couple of weeks mid-winter. In the summer there can be a shortage of water for our four legged riding partners. It is not uncommon to see deer, elk, bear and occasionally a cougar in any of our riding areas. Please be respectful of the inhabitants and carry out any litter. Also be aware that in most of the Snowden and on Menzies Mountain, help is many hours away in the event of serious injury. In the event of an unrepairable mechanical, the walk out can take

This is our largest area with over 100 kms of trails. This is a cross country and all-mountain area, well suited to 5” travel bikes. Although Snowden Forest trail difficulties range from Green Circle to Black Diamond, these trails are not well suited to the absolute beginner rider, as most of the trails are challenging with technical features. The trails traverse a variety of terrain, from dense forest to open rock bluff with incredible views. Unique to this area is the almost total absence of roads. Most of the trails are signed and marked for the preferred direction of travel, although most can be ridden in the reverse direction by a strong climber. The trails of the Snowden Forest are designated for non-motorized use, so leave the quads at home.

Trails are in forest and on open rock bluff, the entire area is within Elk Falls Provincial Park and the trails are recognized by Parks for bike use. A competent rider with a knowledge of these trails could cover them all in a couple hours easily.

The Beaver Lodge Quite flat and with many of the “trails” built on very old rail grades, this is the area most suitable for the family or complete beginner. A strong rider with area knowledge can ride everything “the Beav” has to offer in a little over an hour. There are a few hidden gems in the “Beav” with technical features that will challenge most riders.

Other Areas McIvor Lake/Skidmarks. This area comprises mostly intermediate trails. Woods Creek has a small network of fairly easy trails with little elevation gain. Woodsman’s Wilderness Trails on Menzies Mountain are Campbell River’s newest and most remote riding area that contrasts the mountain’s rugged “working forest” character with its pristine subalpine meadows, mountain views and exhilarating descents on the way down. If you are pedaling up, expect a long, steep and rough access road climb of an hour and half to the start of the trail. The descent is a long XC and technical DH trail from the end of the road access back to the starting point, with some optional but highly recommended trails in the lower elevations, such as Fauxhawk. The trails vary in difficulty throughout the descent, but riders should be very comfortable with technically difficult DH trails before attempting to ride this remote area. Many riders take over five hours to complete the round trip, however a seasoned rider can complete a loop in half that time. Woodsman Wilderness Trails are not maintained by the River City Cycle Club. Trail conditions (including snowpack) and hazards will vary with the season. Ride within your limits and at your own risk! (Note: Mohawk will NOT appeal to any but the most skilled and risk tolerant riders.)

River City elite rule javelin Two golds and one bronze at both the Provincial Championships and the BC Summer Games were brought back to Campbell River by three River City elite athletes. Hayley Hunter won her fourth consecutive provincial title in Kamloops last week with a winning throw of 35.77 metres. Hunter continued her gold medal performance at this past weekend’s BC Summer Games with a winning distance of 38.46 m. Nairee Paulus, who participated in her first provincial championships, finished third with a throw of 29.37 m. At the Summer Games, Paulus brought home a bronze medal with a throw of 33.93 m. Paulus is a 14 year old competing in the Midget Division (14-15 year olds), so this result is a great accomplishment. Not to be outdone, Greg Hay won his third consecutive provincial crown with a throw of 44.92 m. Hay saved his best throw for his last attempt at the Summer Games. With the crowd behind him, he hoisted his personal best throw of 50.07 m. The trio will be continuing their training to get ready for the Legion National Youth Track Championships in Langley next month.

Ukrainian pulls out bag of tricks Have you ever seen a crazy Ukrainian guy purposely flip over a car? Well fans at Saratoga Speedway on Saturday were treated to this as Alex Benyuk flipped over his old Hornet car twice. It was Benyuk’s second stunt of the year as he drove his black F150 through two motor homes two weeks ago. Ten beautiful Big Rigs were also on display on Saturday. The Hornet cars, Roadrunners, Crash to Pass cars and the Figure 8’s were also on the racing card on Saturday night. Next weekend marks the second appearance of the Wilroc Sprint cars at

Saratoga. These cars are fastest cars you will watch on Vancouver Island, averaging 13-15 seconds a lap. Accompanying

the Sprint cars will be the Island Mini Stocks, which is their first appearance of the year, Dwarf cars, Bomber cars and the Motorcycles.
