randon Leigh is bracing to defend his title at the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race on Sunday (July 27). Leigh won last year’s race in both the super-modified class and overall with a time of 1:30:42 and it wasn’t an easy ride. “Basically, it’s an endurance race, it’s trying to keep the tub up, out of the water and that’s all it was the whole way, was pin the throttle and try and not get sucked under,” Leigh said. Fatigue is a factor and Leigh said amongst sore body parts sustained during the race were his back, hip

and knees. “It’s a huge mental race. You get an hour and 45 minutes in, you’re kind of, ‘Why am I out here?’ and you have to remind yourself, because it’s fun,” said Leigh. “It’s a fun race and there are times when you feel a little lonely out there, you’re in a [2.7-metre] boat in the middle of the strait.” The annual Bathtub race is part of Nanaimo Marine Festival, which runs today through Sunday (July 24-27) and features entertainment and activities in addition to the Great Race. Bill McGuire, Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society commodore, said the organization is hoping for 35-40 tubs. Registration occurs between Thursday and Saturday, with a man-

datory safety meeting for tubbers and escort boat drivers at the Coast Bastion Hotel Sunday at 8:30 a.m. McGuire said the race starts at 11 a.m. at Nanaimo’s harbour and will follow a route around Entrance Island (off Gabriola Island) and north and around the Winchelsea Islands. Participants then head back toward Nanaimo, coming into Departure Bay Beach. The tubber must come ashore, run up to the finish line at Kin Park and ring a bell. “Every so often, this happens to be one of those years, the tide is way out, so all of a sudden, if there are two tubs close together, it becomes not only a tub race but also a foot race,” McGuire said.

Nanaimo is looking for more opportunities to get in on sport tourism action. Tourism Nanaimo has taken over sport tourism from the City of Nanaimo, with the goal to present a new policy for event hosting, develop a steering group and plan for the sector. The idea is for the organization to boost major tournaments hosted in the Harbour City, as well as the economic benefits and destination awareness that go with it, according to Lesley Anderson, Tourism Nanaimo’s executive director of destination management. Sport tourism has become a multi-billion dollar industry in Canada and one of the fastestgrowing segments in the tourism industry, according to the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance. Statistics from 2010 show domestic sport tourism spending alone reached $2.6 billion, up 16 per cent from 2008. Nanaimo is no stranger to the sector’s spinoffs, generating approximately $10 million in economic benefits from sporting events between 2009 and 2012, according to the city, which tracks tournaments and festivals that receive sport tourism grants. Last year, 17 events generated $2.3 million and last week, the city hosted the B.C. Games, estimated to have led to $2.6 million in economic benefits. “It’s a very large sector of the tourism economy and it’s been growing quite significantly,” Anderson said, adding communities are also recognizing the sector as a way to attract potential future tourists. Dave Witty, spokesman for the waterfront committee, said it’s important short-term actions don’t compromise the promise of the area. He considers the move to allow the committee to continue assisting and providing advice to council as a key step moving forward. The group had created a long-range vision for the water’s edge. “What it says is the city is interested in ensuring there’s continuity,” he said of the decision. “It’s good to have another set of eyes ... that provide perspective for the whole site as well.” The City of Nanaimo bought the property spanning the Wellcox yard to the border of Snuneymuxw First Nation land

The South Downtown Waterfront Committee will continue keep an eye on progress at the industrial waterfront, as the city takes its first steps toward revitalization. Nanaimo city council agreed Monday to keep the South Downtown Waterfront Committee on as an advisory body while it prepares its 10.8-hectare share of industrial waterfront for redevelopment. The city plans to spend upwards of $400,000 this year to do an environmental site analysis and demolish an old pallet yard, which sits on one of the few parcels of land

Nanaimo RCMP are warning the public about a cheque-cashing scam that has claimed three victims so far. The incidents happened in late June and early July when three teenage boys, ages 14-16, lost $100 each after two men asked if they would cash cheques. “These criminals approach kids and say they just got out of jail and don’t have a bank account,” said Const. Gar y O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. The con artists gave each boy a sealed envelope, which they said contained a cheque for $240. If the boys agreed to cash them, they promised to give each of them $40. Thinking it was easy money with no risk, the boys went to their banks and depos-

last year for $3.4 million with the aim to create a transit hub. The waterfront committee also envisions an extended waterfront walkway, public spaces and housing. Coun. Fred Pattje, who worked with the committee, said it’s important to have a committee to keep an eye on what happens on the site and said if the city doesn’t do things now, it would impede potentially greater possibilities later on. Short-term work budgeted by the city includes $800,000 for the removal of structures. The lease with the pallet company will expire at the end of September. There is also $115,000 set aside for an environmental investigation, which will be done by Tetra Tech EBA; a $67,000 master plan and $125,000 to service the new ferry terminal site.

ited the cheques. “The kids, fortunately, were only able to take out about $100 because they’re kids and banks often put a hold on funds,” O’Brien said. The suspects told them they could keep the balance and they will be happy with just the $100. The boys discovered they’d been scammed when their banks called several days later and told them the envelopes were empty. Both suspects were in their 20s, one First Nations, the other Caucasian. University president’s compensation negotiated prior to cap Vancouver Island University said it did not circumvent provincial compensation caps set for university officials. According to a release provided Monday by the B.C. NDP, the Island university, along with Capilano University and University of the Fraser Valley, overpaid presidents and executives to the tune of $1.1 million between 2012-14. “Of 18 executives reported

by the universities in the time period examined, 14 were identified as receiving payments in excess of the provided caps,” the release read. The cap for presidents is set at $225,000, according to the NDP, and in 2014, Ralph Nilson, VIU president, will see a total salary of about $245,000. He made approximately $239,000 and $242,000 in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

However, in a release, the university said the NDP report is inaccurate and misleading. While Nilson’s total salary exceeded the compensation cap, it was negotiated in 2006 and the compensation cap was announced in 2007. “The president’s base salary has not increased since the date of his hire,” the university said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Woman takes down burglary suspect

Account Manager & Mutual Fund Sales Representative

Jamie Fawcett wasn’t about to let a man who tried to break into her home off easy. The 5-foot-2, 31 year old, who lives on the 900 block of Townsite Road, woke up to the sound of breaking glass at 2:15 a.m. Sunday. Fawcett yelled at the suspect, about 10 inches taller, he fled and the chase was on. “Well I got a look at him and I figured I could probably take him and he wasn’t that hard to take down,” Fawcett said. She said she was motivated by her anger at the attempt to break into her home. The suspect, 22, was arrested and released on a promise to appear in provincial court Oct. 14 to face one count of break and enter. “We never ask or promote home owners to go hands-on, but what she did, given the size difference, was simply amazing,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

Nanaimo Airport will upgrade its firefighting capabilities and make a clean sweep of its runways thanks to a cash injection from Transport Canada’s Capital Assistance Program. Inbrief Native plants rescued city scene

Defibrillator donated to city An automated external defibrillator will now be at Beban Park’s Gyro Youth sports Fields. The heart and stroke Foundation donated a defibrillator to Nanaimo as part of its B.C. Public Access to Defibrillation Program, a partnership with the Ministry of health that will see 750 defibrillators installed in public venues across the province. “we’re placing AeDs where there is the greatest chance they’ll save a life,”said shelley Parker, the foundation’s B.C. and Yukon resuscitation program manager. “Beban Park four fields was selected ... because it is a place where large numbers of people gather on a regular basis and where the chances of someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest could be elevated.”

City’S pilot project modelled on saanich program. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN

A new initiative will help residents save Nanaimo’s native ecosystem and add to their own gardens. The city’s parks, recreation and environment department is looking into a native plant salvage program, which would see volunteers trained to rescue plants from areas slated for development. The initiative has already rolled out in other communities in Washington State and B.C., including the District of Saanich where participants in the volunteer program have grown from 27 to about 500 since 2001. According to Rob Lawrance, the City of Nanaimo’s environmental planner, the program is a way to educate people about the natural ecosystem and why it’s important, as well as work with land owners to save native plants before development occurs. The idea would be to uproot plants, like trees and rose bushes, in

certain areas and encourage residents to replant them as part of landscaping and restoration projects. “There’s a lot of pressure from a number of invasives that’s removing that variety and genetic diversity we have in our parks,” Lawrance said. “So this is just one piece of probably a bigger plan to try to maintain that diversity of natural vegetation.” Gail Adrienne, executive director of the Nanaimo Area Land Trust, believes people are becoming more conscious about the value of gardening with native plants, which don’t require water or pesticides. A new salvage program is “wonderful,” she said, adding plants will be used in other ways than just being bulldozed and the program would heighten awareness of landscaping with native plants. The prospective program stems from Nanaimo’s Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability and is the brainchild of member Ted Perry, who believes the program could prove as popular as the initiative in Saanich. A pilot is expected to run this year and if successful, could be incorporated into the city’s Volunteer in Parks Program. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Sports tourism worth cheering

The B.C. Summer Games can’t be measured by a medal count. The Games were made up, too, of sportsmanship, teamwork, friendships, great plays, record times, personal bests, celebrations, cheers and most of all, moments. Maybe we can measure the Games in dollars and cents. The B.C. Games Society estimates an economic impact of $2.6 million to summer host cities. The City of Nanaimo is aware of what sport tourism brings to town. After tracking statistics for five years, the municipality shuffled its sport tourism strategy, handing over the file to Tourism Nanaimo. The arms-length body will now be entrusted with apportioning sport tourism funding, and will look at ways to get tournament-goers to make return trips to the Harbour City. Some say we don’t have the fields, arenas and stadiums to go for gold when it comes to sports tourism. It’s true that certain tournaments are beyond our capacity. But we can – and do – put on countless small-scale tourneys that keep people coming back to Nanaimo every year, and it all adds up. We proved this past week that we can reach higher sometimes – we put on a wonderful B.C. Summer Games. Every event was well-attended. Travel-weary parents might give certain tournaments a pass, but they simply don’t miss the B.C. Games. While they were in our city they witnessed special moments on the field of play, and consciously or unconsciously, athletes and their families will relate Nanaimo with those experiences. Those moments are hard to quantify, but they matter. We already knew Nanaimo is the place to be, but thousands of beaming visitors reminded us of that this past week. Next month we’ll get some actual dollar estimates of the Games impacts, and we expect to be talking big bucks. There’s no question we earned it, as thousands of hardworking volunteers can attest. But we did it, and we’d do it again, and we should already be looking for the next sport tourism opportunity. We’re game. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith, V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

ating side, while the province continues to pile up debt to pay for the Port Mann mega-project, hospitals, schools and other big infrastructure. Finance Minister Mike de Jong emphasized the difference between capital and operating expenditures. “We’re borrowing to build as opposed to paying for the groceries,” he said. “Debt free B.C.” was not an outright misrepresentation, merely one of the most farfetched promises ever delivered in the history of B.C. politics. The legislature is to convene in October so the B.C. Liberals can pass a taxation framework for the nascent liquefied natural gas industry, which the government hopes will generate the revenues to ultimately pay off the debt. Along with the public accounts, the finance ministry released a list of surplus land sales. The sale of 50-odd properties, some of them closed schools, netted the provincial treasury about $310 million. Was this “selling off the family silverware to try and balance the books,” as NDP leader John Horgan termed it? It’s certainly not a revenue source to be matched next year. u Tom Fletcher is a columnist and legislative reporter for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Re: Nanaimo puts on golden Games, July 22. This past weekend in Nanaimo was nothing short of remarkable. Look at what over 3,400 volunteers did over the past 18 months to showcase your city to the province. The Nanaimo 2014 Summer Games are now over and the 3,181 participants are back at home showing off their medals, boasting about personal bests, and savouring the fond memories created by the volunteers. With the leadership pair of Jeff Lott and Bruce Hunter steering a remarkable board of directors and staff, the Nanaimo Games highlighted how the greater community can benefit from the selflessness of hundreds of volunteers. Nanaimo has showed yet again that it is a community with great pride and confidence, as this version of the B.C. Games built on past Games hosting experiences as well as your ongoing community events like the bathtub weekend, dragon boat festival and the Maple Sugar Festival.

Tourism Nanaimo, which was given sport tourism responsibilities during a city shuffle last year, will team up with the municipality on a revitalized sport tourism plan, which will look at ways to attract and keep events. It’s created a new policy that outlines roles for the two organizations. Bruce Hunter, athletic director at Vancouver Island University and vice-president of the Nanaimo Games, believes great opportunities exist when it comes to sport tourism but what’s missing is the facility and spectator seating to host major events like national championships. “Merle Logan, for example,

has good fields but there’s nowhere to sit if there was going to be a national soccer championship,” he said. “Certainly if a community wants to host those events then [it] has to invest in the infrastructure.” Liz Williams, the city’s manager of recreation services, said she believes it’s worthwhile to look at gaps sport-bysport to see if there are easy and inexpensive fixes. “I think we could find some that we could enhance quite easily, [like] our outdoor venues,” she said. “Could we build some better seating at some of our venues or enhance the Rotary Bowl? There could be options there.” news@nanaimobulletin.com

anitoba Hal was at a friend’s place when an incredible thing happened. “I was sitting in a friend’s house and I didn’t even play a musical instrument and he was jamming on a guitar and I just knew right then that I was going to be a musician and that was what I was going to do for the rest of my life,” Hal told the News Bulletin. “I didn’t even play a note. Seriously it was just that kind of a weird realization.” At the time, Hal was 18 years old, but in that moment he knew that he would never be satisfied with a regular day job. “There are many jobs that people do and some people

are quite happy to do a job their whole life for the paycheque, but I am not one of them. I find that I get bored and depressed.” Following his musical revelation, Hal has gone on to become a respected blues musician, having performed around the world with his ukulele. This weekend, Hal will be showcasing his talents in the Harbour City as he performs at the Nanaimo Aloha Ukulele Festival. “I have travelled all over the world doing these kinds of festivals and there are very few pure ukelele festivals in Canada,” Hal said about the festival. “So it is really nice to find one and have one on Vancouver Island.” Prior to his weekend performances in Nanaimo, Hal will be

playing his music on board a Via Rail train. “To get to Nanaimo I am performing on Via Rail as part

of their Artists on Board program,” Hal said. “I am crossing the country by train and performing in the lounge cars to

get to the festival.” Unlike the majority of blues musicians, Hal performs with a ukulele. Hal, who was born in Winnipeg, originally started out playing the guitar but switched to the ukulele after his grandfather gave him one as a gift. “He gave me a nice 1955 Martin, with the condition that I learn to play it,” Hal said. “I loved my grandfather and I still do, but he’s passed on and I think of him everyday. I had to learn a bunch of songs that he knew. This was my idea. I would learn music that he knew instead of just playing what I did.” In order to play the ukelele, Hal began learning how to read sheet music. He also had to learn and understand musical theory on a deeper level. “It was a fantastic thing and

it opened a lot of doors for me,” Hal said about the learning process. “When I started playing the ukelele what I discovered was that the ukelele moves above my voice. So, I have the music sitting above the sonic range of my voice and my voice below and it created a really nice unexpected balance.” Throughout his career, Hal has released a number of albums, including Flirting with Mermaids, Devil on the Wall and Down in the Kitchen, which was released this past May. Manitoba Hal performs at the Nanaimo Aloha Ukulele Festival at Millstone Winery, 2300 East Wellington Rd. For more information, please visit www.prshopper.com/alohafest.htm. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Drowsy play will make for lively show

I

DROWSY CHAPERONE opens this Friday (July 25) at Bailey studio. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN

A show within a show. That’s the basis for Nanaimo Arts Alive’s latest production, The Drowsy Chaperone. Directed by Alex Goldman and Mel Barta, The Drowsy Chaperone runs from Friday (July 25) to Sunday at the Bailey Studio. Executive assistant Michael Wright said the musical is different from others, “It’s a very unusual musical, Wright said. “What actually happens is the star is an older guy who talks to the audience about his love of musical theatre and then starts to demonstrate it by playing a recording of a musical from the 1920s. What follows next is a magical re-enactment of the stereotypical 1920s American musical comedy. The Drowsy Chaperone was originally created by Bob Martin and Don McKeller. The production first ran in 1998 at the Rivoli

in Toronto and would eventually make its Broadway debut in 2006. “It started out as a workshop production in Toronto in the mid ’90s and eventually made it to Broadway and won a Tony Award,â€? Wright said. “It’s a Canadian musical, which there aren’t many of those about.â€? The Nanaimo Arts Alive production will feature a number of young actors. “The show within the show is totally casted with the talented young people we have here in the city in musical theatre,â€? Wright said. He hopes that people walk away from the Arts Alive production with an appreciation for the amount of young talent in Nanimo. “I think they will first take away, what incredibly talented youngsters we’ve got in Nanaimo. It always amazes me ‌ what incredible talent there is each year,â€? Wright said. The Drowsy Chaperone at the Bailey at 2373 Rosstown Rd. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children, seniors and students. For more info, please call Michael Wright at 250-713-9708. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

NaNaimo Yacht club VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Nanaimo Yacht Club Junior Member Dinghy Racing Team Sweep the podium at 2014 BC Summer Games

Gold medalists: Ben Daniels/Heath Dean, Silver Medalists: Jonathon Kelly/Maxime Therrien, Bronze Medalists: Chris Vassallo/Tiernan Kingzett are looking quite pleased and should be. Jill Christie, far left, the Nanaimo Yacht Club’s Sailing Program Coordinator, and Neil Hawkes, far right, the racing teams head instructor as well as all NYC members couldn’t be more proud of this team’s accomplishments. The Nanaimo Yacht Club still has some openings in our Sailing School programs for ages 5 – adult. Interested in keelboat racing? Our keelboat racing is open and encouraged to all members of the community. We have divisions for all levels of sailors, and offer educational seminars to accelerate the learning curve. If you are interested in crewing on a race boat, please check out our website for more information. Skippers are always looking for crew. If you are interested in joining an active community minded, local boating club, we have membership openings for adult and junior members. Not all Junior Members are interested in racing. Seamanship, personal growth and fitness are all part of the program as well. Hosting the sailing venue for the 2014 BC Summer Games was serious business, but our yacht club members also found time to get silly as well. Our entry into the Sillyboat Regatta not only won our heat, but also won the trophy for most funds raised by a community team. This is the second year in a row that the Notty Yachty Comedy team has won this category for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. We may have been silly, but our efforts are serious!

Welcome to the driver’s seat

“What many people might not realize is the basis of the Durango was developed by Mercedes-Benz for its GL-Class vehicle and Dodge in turn took that same platform and made it into the Durango.”

Trucking in style through the big wide open There’s nothing like a the big doors and the easy-to-access back seat, summer road trip in British and were surprised at Columbia, where we are how huge the cargo area spoiled with some of the is when the third row of most scenic beauty the seats is folded flat. My wife instantlike something roomy and highway. ly loved the two-tone powerful with cars – with Zack Spencer black and beige leather German often on the seats that are heated top of my list. Instead of and, more importantly, an Audi A7 diesel, this time around I cooled for hot summer days. She also selected the full-size, truck-based Duappreciated the big 8.4-inch uConnect rango SUV from Dodge and surprisingly screen that is only offered on this top it does have some German roots. Citadel trim; the lower trimmed cars get a 5-inch unit. The boys in the back Looks noticed that the seats recline for more My family and I are no strangers to the comfort and legroom is massive. On the latest Durango; we had the very same way out of Vancouver, Charlie instantly grey Citadel version over the Christmas fell asleep and didn’t wake up until break last year. My two of a few things, primarily fuel economy. boys, Jack,12, and Charlie, nine, love This is a big rig and was equipped with

‘‘

the 5.7L Hemi V8 with 360hp, moving all that power to four wheels through an 8-speed automatic. City fuel economy can be frightening but I was surprised at how good this truck is, even when taking advantage of the new 120 km/h speed limit on the Coquihalla highway. The Durango put in a solid 11.8 L/100km, with more than 900 km driven. Keep in mind I didn’t soft foot my way to or from Kelowna. I did notice that the fuel economy improved vastly the closer I stayed to 100 km/h. The handling is a bit top-heavy in the corners, especially at higher speeds, but after some initial body roll, the Durango is very stable. One notable feature is the automatic fantastic adaptive cruise control, making the ride very enjoyable. Verdict If you drive in the city, the base 3.6L V6 engine might be a better choice based on fuel consumption but, if you drive a lot on the highway or tow a boat (3,265 kg towing capacity), the

Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference. Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8. My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. I can’t wait to see how that new truck compares. The Lowdown Power: 3.6L V6 with 290hp or 5.7L V8 with 360hp Fill-up: 15.6L/9.1L/100km (city/highway V8) Sticker price: $39,995-$52,495

The Regional District of Nanaimo will help build the first leg of a city-wide rail trail. Regional district officials have agreed to contribute $300,000 toward an E&N pathway that will stretch from Nanaimo’s downtown to Seventh Street. The trail section is considered the first step in an effort to build a cross-city connector. The Nanaimo Regional Rail Trail Partnership, a charity made up of local government and organizations like Tourism Nanaimo, has been fundraising to unite sections of the E&N trail since last February. Earlier this year the City of Nanaimo opted to match up to $100,000 from its trails capital budgets to dollars raised by the partnership and to spend $50,000 on preliminary designs for a path from downtown, south to Seventh Street. The RDN has announced it will partner on the trail section with $150,000 allocated to the design work this year and another $150,000 toward construction in 2015. Andre Sullivan, chairman of the rail trail partnership, said the funding shows the RDN recognizes the E&N Trail as regionally significant, with the potential to link communities together. “From our own perspective it makes our fundraising efforts easier because it shows a true commitment from now only the City of Nanaimo but the region,” he said. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To all the volunteers who help with the community lunch at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Without you, this wouldn’t happen. BEEF To those who chose to attend the tournament instead of my father’s funeral. He gave you years of pleasure playing golf with him and you chose not to say goodbye. There is always another tournament but only one chance to say farewell to a friend. BOUQUET To my husband, Greg, who has been giving blood since 2008, when I unexpectedly needed a transfusion. Also, to all who do. It only takes a couple of hours, a few times a year, to save lives. BEEF To all the dog owners walking their dogs on hot sidewalks. Why don’t you try walking barefoot with them and find out how much they enjoy walking on hot sidewalks? BOUQUET To Harvey and the team at Beban Park Golf Course for their tremendous support of the Nanaimo Special Olympics golf program. BEEF On the corner of Comox Road and Terminal Avenue, why is there not a U.S. flag? Most tourists do not know the origin of these flags – all they see is a bunch of flags from different countries but not an American flag. BOUQUET To the wonderful person who turned in my wedding rings when I left them in a bathroom at Horseshoe Bay, and also to the staff of B.C. Ferries who took care of them and made sure they were safely on the next boat to me. BEEF To people in left-turn lanes who will not go into the intersection on a green light. They wait for yellow, then go. That way, only one car can get through. At least this is Nanaimo and I’m not in a hurry. BOUQUET To the young man with dark hair and glasses who helped my mom get a

new iPhone at Bell in Country Club Centre. You were fantastic at your job – kind, helpful, great customer service. You had patience and took your time to explain everything to us.

BEEF In the old basic can of spaghetti, why did they make the noodles fatter in size? Young people will never know what a real can of spaghetti tastes like. BOUQUET To the pastors and members of Jubilee Christian Centre for helping my family move. BEEF To restaurants that put so much ice in their soft drinks that you can’t tell if it is cola or root beer. BOUQUET To Dr. Rumble who took care of a medical issue I had at the NRGH emergency department. His bedside manner was second to none and he was able to diagnose the problem immediately. To Talia and Patsy in admitting, who were equally warm and receptive when I arrived.

BOUQUET To all of those who contributed to the Park Avenue Elementary School Grade 7 grad: Salvation Army for use of the hall for the banquet and dance, Panago Pizza, Turley’s Florist, Growers Direct, Country Grocer, Shoppers Drug Mart and countless parents who purchased supplies and brought food for the potluck. BEEF To Anakin Skywalker. Why did he have to change his name to Darth Vader when he turned to the dark side? Wouldn’t Darth Skywalker have still been a pretty good name? BOUQUET To Iris at Harbour Air for helping a senior on a busy day. BEEF To those who place signs promoting a garage sale, then leave the signs to weather and fade, becoming neighborhood litter, rather than remove the now useless mess. Littering is a fineable offence. BOUQUET To Mike in the circulation department. Great job!

BEEF A restaurant chain’s real signature hamburger was toasted and did not have lettuce and tomatoes. Young people do not know what a real burger from that restaurant tastes like. BOUQUET To all the people who beef about horse poop, barbecue smoke and jobless people. They make me proud to live in a such a beautiful city if that’s all they can complain about.

BOUQUET To all of our wonderful hiking friends for ‘benching’ us in Morrell Sanctuary. Hikers are special people. BOUQUET To the organizers and volunteers of the Ride Don’t Hide event who donated their time and the sponsors who supported this meaningful family bicycle ride. BOUQUET To the Canadian Tire staff on the return of a vacuum cleaner, which a senior purchased and was unable to set up. The staff at the store were gracious and understanding. BOUQUET To the Columbia Bakery for treating everyone at Maffeo Sutton Park to a beautiful Happy Birthday Canada cake and colourful and delicious cupcakes. BOUQUET To the City of Nanaimo for clearing the sidewalks on Uplands Drive of the overgrown fir trees masquerading as shrubs. BOUQUET To Ken and Lori Bennett of Woodgrove Estates for the fundraiser barbecue for Loaves and Fishes food bank. BOUQUET To Tracey Barnes, an amazing and talented hair stylist at High Caliber Hair Studio. Thank you for the great service every time and all the awesome cuts, colouring and styling. BOUQUET To the honest and kind individual who returned my iPhone to guest services at Woodgrove Centre in July. My seven-yearold learned an invaluable lesson that day, too, on honesty and that when you pay it forward that same gift will be returned to you. BOUQUET To the nice lady who offered me her spare bus ticket when I had forgotten my bus pass at home. Your help was much appreciated.

VIU hopes scorer will be a star I JUSTIN KING joins b-ball Mariners for 2014-15 PacWest season BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The VIU Mariners needed some star power, and were able to add it. Justin King, the new swingman for Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team, arrived in town this month as the squad looks toward the 2014-15 season. Big things are expected from the newcomer from Las Vegas after he was recruited by VIU coach Matt Kuzminski this past winter. “He was looking to get another star player to come in and start scoring,” said King. The M’s knew they needed change with all-star guard Brandon Jones moving on. “We [had] a huge scoring void with Brandon gone, that was 20 points a game,” Kuzminski said. “King will be a different player, but I think he’ll be able to step in and really give teams a tough time.” Two seasons ago, King, playing at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, led the CIS Canada West in scoring with 23.1 points per game and was third in rebounding with 10.1 per game. “My journey was to go pro, but some things didn’t work out for me,” he said. So King found himself sidelined. He continued to work out and shoot hoops, but without a direction. “It was really tough,” he said. “There was a point in time when I couldn’t even watch the game on TV, I was missing the game so much.” So Kuzminski’s interest was reciprocated right away. “He sent me a picture of the ring that they won a couple of years ago. Man, I was pumped,” said King. “It looks like a good opportunity for me to finish school, possibly get a championship, some more accolades.” King can score a lot of different ways. He likes the mid-range jump-

V.I. Raiders kick off against tough Rams BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The V.I. Raiders are about to find out if they’re ready for some football. Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League team begins the 2014 regular season this Saturday (July 26) with a road game against the Langley Rams. It’s been an abbreviated pre-season, as the Raiders only just wrapped main camp at Port Alberni on Monday. It was a productive few days, said coach Brian Ridgeway. “The boys came ready to work and they were focused all the way through and it was great to see,” he said. “[We] found out about our personnel and where we’re going to get the most talent on the field at once.” Ridgeway said it will be a young Raiders team that steps onto the field to start the B.C. Football Conference campaign. “We do have some veterans and they’re quite outstanding, but our young talent looks real good,” the coach said. “They’re going to be able to compete right off the bat.” The offence will be led by new quarterback Liam O’Brien of Parksville, who has earned the starter’s job. “[He’s] a big, strong quarterback, fairly decent mobility and a good arm,” said Ridgeway.

Execution will be important on offence, said the coach, since it will be a new quarterback and new offensive line trying to jell with veteran running backs and receivers. The Rams go into the season as favourites, but at this time of year, the Raiders can’t overly concern themselves with the competition. “Really, we just focus on ourselves, make sure we’re running our plays exactly how we want them, defence is executing properly, and there’ll be game-day adjustments,” Ridgeway said. In a short junior football season, every game is important. The Raiders want to get better and better and peak at playoff time, but at the same time they have to ensure they qualify. “Winning opening day does a lot to get you into playoffs,” Ridgeway said. “It’s only one game, but it’s an important moment. It starts you off on the right foot.” It will be his first game as head coach and he’s excited to how his group will play. “It’ll be interesting to see on game day who can bring the contact,” Ridgeway said. GAME ON … Saturday’s kickoff is at 4 p.m. at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

SNORING?

SLEEP APNEA?

As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D. Helps to reduce the time it takes to fall a sleep. In most cases also stops snoring and gasping for air (sleep apnea) first night. Stops torturing your partner all night. Good sleep prevents being tired next day. Tired people work only at half capacity. What people truly experience: < I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH < Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS < For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a #23 NPN 80045172 substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS <It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

Allergies

By Dr. Chakib Hammoud, M.H.,PhD. What people experience: <I tried numerous other remedies all my life that were not effective. Since I discovered Bell Allergy Relief. I do not have a stuffy nose and itchy eyes when pollen season comes around. I don’t have to walk around like a doped zombie anymore. Leonard Waldner, 44, Delia, AB < For 20 years my life was miserable with sneezing, watery eyes and sinus pressure year-round on most days. I was amazed. On 3rd day all allergies were gone. It was like magic. Becky Gerber, 25, Dover, OH <Golfing without allergy attacks I tried all the medications and none worked. After taking 1 capsule in the morning I’m completely free of all symptoms. Richard Gamez, 74, San Antonio, TX morning. Therese Noto, 58, New York, NY.
