HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

The Trail Times has made it through the preliminaries and, just like Nancy Greene at the 1968 Olympics in France, it wants a gold-medal finish. But it will need help from readers. The Trail Times submitted the front page of the Feb 15, 1968 edition chronicling Greene’s goldmedal victory in Grenoble into a nation-wide contest for the best front page stories and made it to the top eight in the sports category. “The History of Canada in the Nation’s Front Pages” contest by Newspapers Canada in collaboration with PEI 2014, asked newspapers across the country to submit its best front pages from the past 150 years. The contest coincides with the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which played a huge role in shaping the country. Eight categories were open for submis-

sion: Canadian Politics; Canadian Sports; Canadian Heroes; Canadian Arts/Culture/Entertainment; Canadian Science & Technology; Canada at War / Canadian Armed Forces; Canadian Communities; and Canada on the International Stage. “With the Trail Times’ 119-year history I knew we would have some worthy submissions,” said Trail Times editor Guy Bertrand. “And sports was an obvious choice for a category “With the help of the Trail Historical Society, which maintains a lot of our back issues, I came up with a couple of entries in the sports category on the Smokies 1961 world championship and Nancy Greene’s iconic victory at the Olympics in 1968.” Frontpages.ca chose the February 1968 front page, and all other finalists, based on its newsworthiness, depth and detail, and quality of writing, totalling up to a score out of 100. The judges were on the lookout for the front page story’s sig-

nificance to the community, local impact, scope and excellence of content. “The front page with Nancy Greene’s win was great on so many levels,” said Bertrand. “Her victory propelled her into worldwide stardom and she would be named Canada’s female athlete of the 20th Century. “That edition was also a great example of the Times’ staff getting to Rossland and getting reaction from the Greene family and taking photos in the family home. Capturing that moment has become a piece of history in the Home of Champions.” Submissions came in from across the country and judges narrowed the list down to eight in each category. Now it’s up to the voters to decide the best front pages over the last 150 years. The Trail Times is up against national newspapers and major dailies in the Canadian Sports category. The Calgary Herald has two covers en-

tered in the Canadian Sports category. One front page showing off the 1988 Calgary Olympics, and another celebrating Canada’s gold-medal win in the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. The Globe and Mail’s entry commemorates the Canadian victory over the Soviet team in 1972’s Summit Series. The now defunct Sunday Star, formerly based in Toronto, entered a front page with a congratulatory photo of the Toronto Blue Jays winning the World Series in 1992. To vote for the 1968 front page of the Times, visit frontpages.ca, click ‘vote now’ and pick the Canadian Sports category. Two categories are added every two weeks but voting in all categories ends on Aug. 22. Winners will be announced in early September and will be posted on the FrontPages.ca website. Organizers are exploring opportunities to display the winning submissions in P.E.I. during the celebration.

Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference. Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8. My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. Car smashes are the leading cause of accidental death among children in British Columbia. According to government statistics, every year more than 1,300 children under nine are injured or killed. Putting that in scary perspective, that’s the equivalent of around five elementary schools. It’s estimated that the proper use of child car safety seats reduce the risk of injury by a massive 85

ticularly attuned after the recent birth of my first grandson. I found myself grappling with a rear facing car seat – as legally required! After a few bruised knuckles and bruised head from bashing it on the door frame, Francis was installed safely as was his seat. For years, the BC Automobile Association Child Passenger Safety Program has provided solid information, resources and training to make ensure parents do install these lifesavers correctly (http://www.bcaa.com/roadsafety/child-passenger-safety/ overview). Now Volvo has produced a fabulous safety manual called Children & Cars, which is available free of charge at any Volvo dealership. Thoughtful and fascinating text imaginatively illustrated throughout with photos of child crash test dummies dressed in trendy attire. It was penned for Sweden but the text in the Canadian version has been adapted to reflect our laws. While it is required here that children under 12 months must be placed in a rear-facing seat, it’s acceptable for children aged one to transfer to a forward facing seat. The Swedes take issue with that and say it’s better they stay in a rear facing seat as long as possible, often beyond three years. The booklet explains that a baby’s head is large and heavy

in relation to the rest of its body but its neck is just not strong enough to deal with the forces that would rock it in a frontal collision. And a detailed diagram of how neck vertebrae develops sure bolsters that assertion. In fact, the author argues we probably all should travel backwards for safety’s sake! St. John’s, Newfoundland: Atop Signal Hill is an arrow that points westward. It reads “Vancouver, 5,031 km/3,126 mi.” I’m a long way from home. But as I look over the rock wall of the historical landmark in St. John’s, Newfoundland, I don’t feel so far away. An iceberg presents itself in the distance as the warm, morning sun lights up the Atlantic Ocean. The faint hum of a vessel’s engine drones away in the background.

To think, on December 12, 1901, the first transatlantic wireless signal was received by Guglielmo Marconi at that spot is a fascinating piece of history. Interestingly, my phone whistles telling me I’ve received a message. As I walk towards the all-new 2015 Subaru Outback, I realize that this vehicle is also making its own little history. Touted as the world’s first sport utility wagon, it’s now 20 years old and better than ever. There’s an all-new exterior look, the interior is much more refined, there’s a vibrant gauge

cluster, a new audio system, and around back, there’s a total of 1005L of cargo capacity (that’s up 33L from the 2014 model.) There’s also a choice of two engines, a humble 2.5L, 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, or a more potent 3.6L, 6-cylinder with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The latter of the two engines is what powered me around “The Rock” – not to be confused with Dwayne Johnson, the actor and former WWE star – but Newfoundland. With only a couple of days to

figure out some adventures, time would be tight, but I’d enjoy each minute of it. Complete with a high-torque Lineartronic CVT, I had the option to up and downshift through the Outback’s simulated gears, in case I needed to pass cars en route to my various adventures. First: sea kayaking in Cape Broyle. Though the drive from downtown St. John’s is only about 66 kilometres, I’ve learned that giving yourself a little extra time when going anywhere is a good idea.

Protect vehicles in hot conditions

Dramatic fluctuations in temperature can wreak havoc on automobiles. While cars and trucks are designed to be reliable under various conditions, sometimes the weather can get the best of even the most reliable vehicle. Extreme heat adds to an already high temperature under the hood, requiring ventilation and cooling systems to work that much harder. Batteries, alternators, starters, fan motors, and cooling systems are particularly vulnerable to high heat. It’s easy for a car to overheat and breakdown. Proper maintenance and some hot weather guidelines can keep drivers safe and on the road when temperatures soar, whether drivers are going on a quick

ride or an extended road trip. Be sure the radiator is working properly and is filled with fluid at all times. This helps prevent overheating, which can strand a vehicle on the side of the road.Hot temperatures cause items to expand, such as the air molecules inside of the tires. Make sure the tires are properly inflated so blowouts do not occur. Keep upto-date with oil changes and other routine maintenance. Vehicles that are well maintained are less likely to be susceptible to heat strain. Proper air flow is essential to cool an engine and keep a vehicle air conditioning system operating efficiently. If the cooling system has not recently been serviced, have it done before

the hot weather arrives. Clean the vehicle so that it will better reflect the sun’s rays, cutting down on radiant heat. When the vehicle is parked, use a car cover or a reflective shade in the windshield to protect the interior from sun damage and excessive heat. Passengers should all wear appropriate clothing and apply sunscreen. Car windows do not block UV light, and passengers may be susceptible to sunburn even when they’re in the car. Park in the shade whenever possible. Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for short moments. Keep plenty of water on hand in the event of a breakdown to prevent dehydration until help arrives.

Top down driving in sunny California By Bob McHugh

Los Angeles, Ca. – The Nissan 370Z (Zee or Zed) oozes youthful energy with its edgy design and wholehearted per-

formance. Add warm California air to enhance the open sports car driving experience and roll back a few years, at least temporarily. My two days in Los Ange-

les were spent mainly in and around Pasadena, a short freeway drive (16 km.) northeast of the downtown core. There are no beaches, no piers, no theme parks, no giant roller coasters

The Z’s one-touch, auto-latching convertible top can open or close in about 20 seconds and comes with a glass rear window and an integrated electric rear window defroster. Wandering on less travelled roads towards the towering San Gabriel Mountains, which create a picturesque backdrop to Pasadena, was an opportunity to play with the Z’s delightful rev-matching 7-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission can also be fitted (via a sport package) and it comes with a downshift rev-matching feature, a “world first” for Nissan engineering. It’s a snug driver cockpit that offers limited storage (although there is some extra space behind the seats), a single cup-holder centre console and a pull-up style park brake. I used all the rear travel provided on the driver’s seat and had the seat cushion set to its lowest position – a 6ft- plus tall driver is likely to have space issues.

Getting in or out of the lowslung Z wasn’t as painful an exercise as I feared it might be, but if you suffer from back or joint ailments a taller vehicle would definitely be a better choice. The hip point for the driver’s seat is very low and you sit with legs extended forward, viewing the road ahead over what suddenly seems like a much longer hood. Its short windshield and surrounding glass give Z a chopped racy appearance and the moulded design of the tonneau cover enhances its classic “double cockpit” roadster styling. Vertical door handles have become a signature feature of modern Z cars. Auxiliary turn signal lights, on the front fenders, also hail from older generations of Z. An exceptionally good powerto-weight ratio allows an

under-six second 0 to 100 km/ hour acceleration time and puts this Z into elite sports car territory. Yet, when you consider its comparatively good fuel economy numbers and sane pricing, it’s still one of the smarter “expensive plaything” purchases. In Canada, the Roadster is offered in a Touring trim with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic transmissions. Touring automatic comes with both Sport and Navigation packages in Canada, but these packages are optional in the US. There’s also a basic (non-Touring) edition of the 370Z Roadster that sells for $41,470, south of the border. Not too long ago, high-performance cars guzzled fuel, belched smog and were a workout to drive. Job Description: Mechanical Inspector needed to perform inspections specifically related to the assembly of two 500MW Turbine/Generator Units at the Mica Generating Station. The candidate must â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure adherence to contract specifications â&#x20AC;˘ Monitor and record progression of work â&#x20AC;˘ Ensure quality work practice and quality product Preferred Experience: â&#x20AC;˘ Familiarity with hydro-electric power generation equipment installation â&#x20AC;˘ or maintenance â&#x20AC;˘ Experience working in large mechanical equipment maintenance, â&#x20AC;˘ assembly or construction â&#x20AC;˘ Experience with the levelling, alignment and installation of machinery â&#x20AC;˘ Knowledge of various welding applications and methods Skills/Abilities: â&#x20AC;˘ Ability to read, review and mark-up drawings. â&#x20AC;˘ Competent in performing steel, cable and piping quantity calculations â&#x20AC;˘ Strong computer skills â&#x20AC;˘ Excellent verbal and written communication skills The successful applicant will be required to work under a collective union agreement and required to live in a camp located at Mica Creek BC, 140 kilometres north of Revelstoke.
