Stargazing support tops expectations Hundreds of visitors suggest Dominion Astrophysical Observatory viable: supporters Travis Paterson News staff
Ball drop Sky diver Peter Vos turns sideways as he carries the game ball, in a bag strapped to his torso, down to the centre of the field to start the friendly match between the Victoria Highlanders and Glasgow Rangers at Centennial Stadium. Rangers FC won the match 2-1, while Highlanders FC showed skill to keep close with a worthy opponent. See the game wrap-up on Page A17.

Saturday night stargazing at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory has taken off with a total of more than 500 people showing up at the last two events. Nearly 350 visited the Centre of the Universe for a tour of the Plaskett Telescope on July 12, with another 200 braving the windy conditions on July 19 for a super moon viewing. “Unfortunately the wind kept us from opening the dominion roof, but those who stuck it out and stayed late finally got to peek through the telescope a little before 11 p.m.,” said Lauri Roche, a volunteer with the Victoria Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society.

“Other than being blown off the hill by winds it was another great night,” Roche said. With wind up to 50 km/h, the Plaskett’s fragile lenses couldn’t be exposed, Roche said. “It’s safe to say the free admission is drawing big numbers, but as long as we’re around the 200 to 300 mark, we’re okay,” she said. “Anything over 300 and it does start to get a little crowded with lineups.” Saanich South MLA Lana Popham – who launched a petition to save the facility’s outreach programs after the federal government announced it was pulling funding last year – said the early turnout has been encouraging. HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. A pair of Saanich triathletes are in action as the 2014 Commonwealth Games kicks off in Glasgow, Scotland this weekend. Broadmead-based Kirsten Sweetland and fellow Saanichites Matt Sharpe and Ellen Pennock competed in the men’s and women’s triathlon final. (Visit saanichnews. com for updated results.) Saanich has a strong representation at the Games led by returning gold medalist Ryan Cochrane. The lanky swimmer is hunting another podium after winning gold in the 400- and 1,500-metre freestyle at the Delhi Common-

long time Gordon Head cyclist Nic Hamilton suffered a concussion during a wipeout. Hamilton races for professional road cycling team Jelly Belly Sport Beans out of California and recently
moved into track cycling as part of his Olympic campaign. The 27-year-old moved to Gordon Head as an 18-year-old and took up cycling when he arrived. reporter@saanichnews.com

forward. Talk to your banker, accountant, financial planner or a trusted friend or family member who has a good understanding of financial matters. If you own a home, you will likely be surprised to find that you can afford a retirement community as they vary in monthly rental fees, some starting under $2000/month.. The more you understand your needs and priorities, the easier it will be to narrow down your ideal community whether private or funded. • So, make a priority list of your Wants, absolute Needs and Desires (take into account location, meals, emergency response, amenities, social opportunities, transportation, etc.). • Call your local retirement residences and make a list of the price ranges and what’s included. Ask about any ‘extras’ like telephone, internet, etc. If they are above your budget ask them who they would recommend, as they often know what the different communities charge. • Plan to tour at least 3 or 4 residences over a couple months so you can take your time and be as objective as possible. • If you rent and have determined that private communities are not within your budget, currently there are some government funded Assisted Living Models in BC. Some residences are subsidized based on income. • Two programs that are available to seniors requiring assistance in BC. The first is through the Department of Veteran’s affairs, where Veterans receive financial support from the Government of Canada. More information can be found at www.veterans.gc.ca. • The second program is called SAFER - Shelter for Elderly Renters, through BC Housing, where some seniors may qualify for a subsidy to help with monthly rent. OUR VIEW
Scottish theme highlights Saanich summer sport The 2014 Commonwealth Games kicked off in Glasgow, Scotland this week, representing the latest tartan tinge running through Saanich sport this summer. The gripping and brilliantly well-attended Rangers FC vs. Highlanders FC match at Centennial Stadium on Monday was another welcome Scottish connection, while the Victoria Highland Games and Celtic Festival served as the perfect introduction to our summer of Scots last May. It’s amazing to see Broadmead-based Kirsten Sweetland and fellow Saanichites Matt Sharpe and Ellen Pennock fighting for medals in the men’s and women’s triathlon final. And Saanich’s returning gold medalist, swimmer Ryan Cochrane, is hunting another podium after winning gold in the 400- and 1,500-metre freestyle at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. His teammates in the pool include Saanich Commonwealth Place regulars Hilary Caldwell, Alec Page and Will Brothers. It’s heartbreaking in equal turn to hear Gordon Head cyclist Nic Hamilton suffered a concussion during a devastating wipeout on the track during a training run earlier this week. But there is some hope as Hamilton could compete in the road events later in the Games. In the end, the legacy of Saanich’s 1994 Commonwealth Games is sure to shine through in Glasgow next week as the results roll in. Yet whatever the outcome, it’s time to raise a dram of whiskey and say cheers to the Scots for a great summer of sport.
The legacy of the ’94 Games is sure to shine in Glasgow.

Saving money on sewage a dream It costs the Greater Victoria Water District $40 million to treat our drinking water. We are very fortunate to have access to the world’s cleanest water. Just turn on the tap and it flows out of sight and down to the sea. Our hands are sanitized, teeth whitened and we may have popped a few pharmaceuticals to correct a dysfunction. It’s all good. I have heard that in B.C. there are some water bottling companies that use municipal water, bottle it and sell it. Has the Capital Regional District ever considered doing this? Imagine a natural, local renewable resource that might actually help reduce taxes. To take this idea even further, I watch as several local schools have their field sprinkler systems turn on automatically as most Victorians are still sleeping. Thousands of gallons of treated water irrigates the school fields. It is an added expense to the School Districts’ budgets using treated water and the taxpayers pay for it.
Does a decision like the federal government’s approval of the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project spur you into action? Answer online at www.vicnews.com
Yet, we are warned by expensive CRD media ads “to conserve water or a CRD bylaw officer will be at your door.” If the municipalities were to agree on building greenhousestyle tertiary plants within their municipalities, the potable water could be used for disbursement to school playgrounds and nearby boulevards. It might reduce the need for some pipeline retrofits and replacement. The greenhouse facilities could potentially attract eco-tourists, dignitaries and even a few impoverished local taxpayers. Has this idea been considered as
a cost-benefit by Seaterra? Imagine the Seaterra program actually trying to save money. (I must sweep these ludicrous imaginings from my brain.) It’s been said, “If you can dream it, you can make it happen.” I dream of the day when the water, schools and CRD member municipalities might implement a plan that would combine and reduce taxpayer expenses. Could the CRD actually try to save money, or is the CRD only in the business of spending money? Am I only dreaming? Art Bickerton Saanich

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder W. Gifford-Jones, MD
W
hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack. Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack. Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.
I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent. But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies. The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day. This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors. As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.
I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications.

The third-place Victoria Mariners and sixthplace Victoria Eagles will face each other in a bestof-three series this weekend beginning Saturday in the first round of the B.C. Premier Baseball League playoffs. Games 1 and 2 go at noon and 2:30 p.m. at Henderson Park tomorrow. Game 3, if necessary, is noon on Sunday. The Mariners set a new franchise record with 34 regular season wins as they wrapped up the season with a doubleheader sweep of the White Rock Tritons on Sunday, 7-1 and 5-4. The defending league champion Eagles came a win shy of tying their previous win record (27) and instead ended the season tied with the same record as the fifth-place Vancouver Cannons 26-22. The Eagles split a pair of games with the North Shore Twins on Tuesday, winning 3-2 and losing 12-0. It’s been an emotional season as Mariners player Zack Downey succumbed to non-Hodgkins lymphoma in June at just 18 years of age. That same week pitchers Erik Skuja of the Eagles and Chris Fougner of the Mariners threw no-hitters, Skuja against the Langley Blaze and Fougner against the Parksville Royals. reporter@vicnews.com
Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries. Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.
Bantam AAA Victoria Eagles player Liam Kruse pitches during the first inning of a semifinal game against Vancouver-Squamish on July 19 at the B.C. Summer Games in Nanaimo. The Island zone won bronze.

Welcome to the driver’s seat
“What many people might not realize is the basis of the Durango was developed by Mercedes-Benz for its GL-Class vehicle and Dodge in turn took that same platform and made it into the Durango.”

My wife instantlike something roomy and highway. ly loved the two-tone powerful with cars – with Zack Spencer black and beige leather German often on the seats that are heated top of my list. My two of a few things, primarily fuel economy. boys, Jack,12, and Charlie, nine, love This is a big rig and was equipped with
‘‘

the 5.7L Hemi V8 with 360hp, moving all that power to four wheels through an 8-speed automatic. City fuel economy can be frightening but I was surprised at how good this truck is, even when taking advantage of the new 120 km/h speed limit on the Coquihalla highway. The Durango put in a solid 11.8 L/100km, with more than 900 km driven. Keep in mind I didn’t soft foot my way to or from Kelowna. I did notice that the fuel economy improved vastly the closer I stayed to 100 km/h. The handling is a bit top-heavy in the corners, especially at higher speeds, but after some initial body roll, the Durango is very stable. One notable feature is the automatic fantastic adaptive cruise control, making the ride very enjoyable. Verdict If you drive in the city, the base 3.6L V6 engine might be a better choice based on fuel consumption but, if you drive a lot on the highway or tow a boat (3,265 kg towing capacity), the
Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference. Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8. My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. I can’t wait to see how that new truck compares. The Lowdown Power: 3.6L V6 with 290hp or 5.7L V8 with 360hp Fill-up: 15.6L/9.1L/100km (city/highway V8) Sticker price: $39,995-$52,495

ROYAL OAK 801 Royal Oak Drive 250.727.6561 has incredible off-road capabilities, in case I needed to get to some hard to reach spots. With a ground clearance of 220mm – like the Forester and XV Crosstrek – it can tackle the trails without even breaking a sweat. Thanks to the X-Mode feature, it allows for even more traction in high-slip environments. This all-wheel drive vehicle is just as happy being on the road as it is playing in the puddles, mud or climbing rocks. Another adventure that wasn’t as physically demanding took me to Ferryland, south of St. John’s.
After parking, it’s about a one-kilometre walk until you reach a lighthouse. Not just any lighthouse, but one that serves picnic lunches. A trip to Newfoundland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Cape Spear; Canada’s easternmost point. Looking out into the Atlantic, another iceberg lazily floats by as the humpback whales are out and breathing. A cool ocean breeze blows the salty air around. I could get used to this, along with the companionship of the 2015 Subaru Outback.

Complete with a hightorque Lineartronic CVT, I had the option to up and downshift through the Outback’s simulated gears, in case I needed to pass cars en route to my various adventures. First: sea kayaking in Cape Broyle. Though the drive from downtown St. John’s is only about 66 km, I’ve learned that giving yourself a little extra time when going anywhere is a good idea. It’s amazing how serene the cabin remains even at highway speeds, with the wind blowing furiously. Furthermore, the Outback

St. John’s, Newfoundland: Atop Signal Hill is an arrow that points westward. It reads “Vancouver, 5,031 km/3,126 mi.” I’m a long way from home. But as I look over the rock wall of the historical landmark in St. John’s, , I don’t feel so far away. As I walk towards the allnew 2015 Subaru Outback, I realize that this vehicle is also making its own little history. Touted as the world’s first sport utility wagon, it’s now 20 years old and better than ever. There’s an all-new exterior look, the interior is much more refined, there’s a vibrant gauge cluster, a new audio system, and around back, there’s a total of 1,005L of cargo capacity (that’s up 33L from the 2014 model.) There’s also a choice of two engines, a humble 2.5L, 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, or a more potent 3.6L, 6-cylinder with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The latter of the two engines is what powered me around The Rock.

Table tennis tedium Six-year-old Vivian Le, a student at Lochside Elementary, waits patiently for her grandparents as they pose with other members of the Victoria Chinese Silver Threads Table Tennis Club for a group photo after their annual Friendship Table Tennis Games with the Monterey Table Tennis Club in Oak Bay. About 100 players came out for the July 17 event. The players’ ages span decades and even generations, ranging from 50 to 85, but they come together for camaraderie each summer during the competitive tournament. Don Denton/News staff

Highlanders perform well, thousands greet Rangers Highlanders women head to PCSL Cup after topping their league Travis Paterson News staff
The Glasgow Rangers drew 5,735 fans to UVic’s Centennial Stadium on Monday evening as the storied Scottish club narrowly defeated the Victoria Highlanders 2-1. Prior to the start of the match four skydivers landed at centre field with one delivering the game ball. It added theatrics as the parachuters were forced to avoid grumpy ospreys, concerned for the young in their nests, high up in the stadium lights. Bagpipes then greeted the fans and players before the historic friendly kicked off. The game featured all the scoring in the first half. Cam Hundal, who scored the gamewinnning goal in the 2011 CIS National Championship for the UVic Vikes at Centennial Stadium, came up big again, and scored the Highlanders’ only goal on his home turf against the Rangers. Hundal, a left-side attacker, received a simple pass and shrugged off a challenge from Ranger Darren McGregor before tucking the ball inside the near post. Calum Gallagher and Nicky Clark scored for
the visiting Rangers. The Rangers website reported 10 changes in the starting roster from the team’s friendly in Sacramento last week. It will now travel to Ottawa for Wednesday, the Rangers final North American tour match against Ottawa Fury, also of the PDL. The Highlanders season comes to an end, having been ousted by the Vancouver Whitecaps U23 side, 7-2 in the
goals of the season and Kristen Livingstone also scored. Mid Isle was tabbed with an own goal. The women move on to the PCSL Challenge Cup Tournament the weekend of July 26-27 in Penticton. Extra time: The 2011 CIS National Championship final at Centennial Stadium drew just 3,023 fans, just over half of Monday’s attendance.
July 16 playoff match at Royal Athletic Park. The women’s Coop Highlanders secured the Pacific Coast Soccer League regular season trophy, and an undefeated 10-0 record, with an 8-0 victory over the Mid Isle Highlanders on July 20 at Hampton Park. Liz Hansen led with a hat trick of goals. Olivia Swinton, Emily Stenerson, and Mia Gunter each scored their first

Q: DO WATERFRONT HOMES NEED MORE PROTECTION FROM THE WEATHER? Waterfront homes receive more abuse from the elements than the average home, so extra measures should be taken to protect them. For instance, invest in stainlesssteel locks to avoid salt air corrosion. What are my responsibilities as a waterfront homeowner? If you’re part of a homeowners association, find out what kind of upkeep and maintenance of the property will be required from you by reviewing the conditions, covenants and restrictions. BUYING TIP | Consider the waterfront property and its amenities more than the structure
Waterfront home market varies Ocean homes take a slight dip in marketplace Travis Paterson News staff
While it it’s rare to find an affordable waterfront home listed for sale in Saanich, they do show up and they don’t last long. A recent update from the Victoria Real Estate Board pointed to a drop in the average cost of Greater Victoria waterfront homes from $1.22 million to $1.11 million, a nine per cent drop in 2014. Of course those numbers are easily skewed - a single luxury home, such as the priciest Saanich waterfront currently listed for $7.9 million in Cordova Bay, has a major impact on the sales of sub-million dollar homes. “Affordable is a relative term as there is going to be a premium to be near the water, whether it’s the view or beach access, but there are places available for under a million,” said real estate agent Michael McMullen of Re/Max Camosun, who specializes in Saanich homes. “Of the 3,274 single family residences listed in Greater
Travis Paterson/News staff
Waterfront homes overlooking Arbutus Cove in Saanich are expensive, but a very safe investment according to local experts. Victoria for 2014, only 338 have been waterfront. Of the 1,658 houses sold in this year, 99 were waterfront, which is an 18-per cent jump from 84 last year,” he said. Four waterfront homes in Saanich have sold since January, the lowest at $756,000, at 5091 Cordova Bay Rd., and the highest at $1,628,000 on Vantreight Drive in
Gordon Head. “It might be misleading as $750,000 is often the price of the property, so that Cordova Bay Road house likely needed some work. That’s often the price of a tear down for waterfront.” In January, a waterfront townhouse in Arbutus Cove lasted just 16 days and sold for $740,000.

The main attraction of waterfront properties, aside from a beautiful view, is the waterfront lifestyle that comes along with it – boating, kayaking, canoeing, and other outdoor elements. Due to the recreation factor, private docks are a common point on buyers’ wish lists. With exposed cliffside property along Cordova Bay
and Arbutus Cove, the majority of Saanich waterfront is not accessible for larger boat docking, though there are a few Saanich homes with docks available along the Gorge Waterway. Head to realtor.ca to check out the latest waterfront homes available in Saanich. reporter@saanichnews.com
