Strong Lady rips apart a ‘trashy novel’ with her bare hands at the Victoria International Buskers Festival on Tuesday.
Victoria busker festival heads into final weekend Kevin Laird News staff
The fourth annual Victoria International Buskers Festival comes to a glittering end Sunday (July 27). Over the last 10 days, Victorians have been treated to world-class street entertainment. With seven stages set around the downtown core, the festival offers non-stop action and entertainment for the whole family. This year performers include award-winning Victor Rubilar, Guinness World Record juggler from Sweden; Flame Oz, fire artists from Australia; Quatuor Stomp, four circus performers who bring
a wide variety of entertainment to the stage; Street Circus, featuring high-flying acrobats, juggling and contortion; Reuben Dot Dot Dot, who presents physical stunts; Strong Lady, an Australian who travels the world performing strong feats; The Checker Board Guy, who walks a fine line between alternative theatre and sickly sweet Disney material; plus many other acts. The family event is free to attend through Sunday along the Inner Harbour walkway. Buskers pass around the hat at the end of their performances, scheduled every hour on the hour. editor@vicnews.com

B.C. Hydro and FortisBC are expanding their low-income energy conservation programs to reduce the impact of rising electricity costs. One program offers free energy saving kits, including compact fluorescent light bulbs, weatherstripping, thermometers to optimize operation of the fridge and freezer and a high-efficiency shower head. The other offers free home energy evaluations to see if they home qualifies for an energy-efficient refrigerator or extra insulation. Energy Minister Bill Bennett
said the government changed regulations to increase the lowincome cutoff to qualify for the programs. A family of four earning up to $57,200 can now qualify, up from $44,000, a change which will almost double the number of households who are eligible. The threshold for a two-person household is $47,100. Customers of the two utilities have to apply and provide proof of income to take advantage of the programs. B.C. Hydro has other energysaving incentives that are not income-tested, including a
rebate program for installation of insulation, draftproofing, heat pumps and water heaters. Those require homeowners to pay for assessment to see if they qualify for rebates. B.C. Hydro spends $160 million a year on its whole range of energy efficiency programs, including those for commercial and industrial customers. The utility has set an “aggressive” goal to meet 78 per cent of its demand growth through energy conservation, reducing the need to build new generating capacity. editor@vicnews.com

Cyclists raise $50,000 for Hospice care Cyclists from throughout Greater Victoria are expected to raise more than $50,000 for local Hospice care this weekend. The cyclists set out on a two-day trip through Greater Victoria and Salt Spring Island on Saturday (July 26) to raise awareness and funds. This year’s route is approximately 200 kilometers and will take cyclists along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, through West Saanich, along the Cowichan Valley’s rural coastline, over the scenic country roads of Salt Spring Island and back along the Saanich Peninsula.
To participate, each cyclist has committed to raise a minimum of $500 in pledges. Most have significantly exceeded this goal, with some riders achieving more than $3,000 in pledges. The Cycle of Life Tour 2014 organizers estimate $50,000 will be made to hospice care at the conclusion of this year’s event. The tour supports Victoria Hospice, Salt Spring Island Hospice, Cowichan Valley Hospice, Sooke Hospice and Nanaimo Hospice. Riders begin and their journey from Dockside Green, 391 Tyee Rd., in Victoria. editor@vicnews.com

More than 1,500 images catalogued at Esquimalt Archives are about to get a new life on the Internet with the township’s Capturing our History digitization project. The goal of the project, which is partially funded by a $9,000 grant from the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of B.C., is to digitize and make available historical images of Esquimalt covering the past 150 years. “This project represents a significant contribution to the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre’s goal of making the province’s history freely accessible
online,” said Simon Neame, director of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. The historical images will be scanned and posted to the web, providing wider public access to the story of Esquimalt, its history and its people. “We will exponentially increase online access to our historical images while also preserving them digitally,” said Greg Evans, municipal archivist. Patrick Craib, a museum and archives consultant, has been contracted to provide project digitization and database expertise. Images – many of them in a fragile state – are carefully

Olympic View hole-in-one paying off for many A hole-in-one scored at Olympic View Golf Club during the recent Base Commander’s Tournament managed to create a three-way benefit. Jim Utterson nailed the ace with an eightiron on the 157-yard 11th hole, setting in motion a chain of events that define community support. Through an insurance policy typically
taken out for such promotions, Utterson won $10,000 for his perfect shot. His drive sailed high and dove straight into the cup without first bouncing on the green. “I’ve hit the stick (in the air) many a time, but never had that happen,” said the Victoria Shipyards worker, for whom the ace was his third ever. “The spotter got up and didn’t say
a word. When she realized what happened she threw her hands in the air.” Last week in the golf course lounge, Utterson received his cheque. The View Royal resident promptly turned over a $1,000 personal cheque to Gaynor Jackson of the CFB Esquimalt’s charity of choice, the Military Family Resource Centre. And as part of the
insurance policy, a $2,000 donation was passed along to Mary Lynn McKenna, executive director of Utterson’s charity of choice, the Esquimalt Neighbourhood House. McKenna said the

If you own a home, you will likely be surprised to find that you can afford a retirement community as they vary in monthly rental fees, some starting under $2000/month.. The more you understand your needs and priorities, the easier it will be to narrow down your ideal community whether private or funded. • So, make a priority list of your Wants, absolute Needs and Desires (take into account location, meals, emergency response, amenities, social opportunities, transportation, etc.). • Call your local retirement residences and make a list of the price ranges and what’s included. OUR VIEW
Drunk driving laws fall short At least one person has not been deterred by B.C.’s tougher impaired driving laws. Victoria resident Suzanne Elizabeth Gurnell was charged earlier this month with four offences, including dangerous and impaired driving, all stemming from an incident with Victoria Police Department in April. Of course, new tougher laws were unlikely to deter Gurnell. After all, the old ones didn’t. Gurnell collects impaired driving prohibitions at the same rate that a philatelist collects stamps. She has 19 such offences in the past six years, including three drunk driving convictions. How she is still driving is beyond all reasonable argument. She is obviously not doing so legally, as this latest round of charges included driving with a suspended license. The fact that she still has a license to suspend speaks volumes for B.C.’s – and moreover, Canada’s – impaired driving laws. Impaired driving remains the leading cause of criminal death in Canada, according to Statistics Canada’s 2011 report (the most recent one available on the topic). The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse claims 8,431 people died on Canadian roads in crashes involving a drinking driver in the first decade of this century. Clearly, the message is not getting across. Perhaps people would think harder about getting behind the wheel after a night of boozing if Canada were to incorporate corporal punishment, like some Middle Eastern countries. An impaired charge in the Emirates can net you 80 lashes. In Taiwan, it’s more harsh. A blood-alcohol reading of 0.05 per cent can result in a two-year jail term for a motorist. Three cans of beer will set most people over the top. Other countries have sentenced people to death for the crime. What will it take for the likes of Gurnell, and other prolific drunk drivers, to change their ways? No Canadian law will ever make a difference.

In remembrance The memorial book to fallen soldiers sits open to the page honouring Victoria’s Lt. Andrew Richard Nuttal who died in Afghanistan in 2009. The book is part of a travelling national memorial commemorating Canada’s mission in Afghanistan on display at the B.C. legislature building until 5 p.m. today.

Political gain and a smoke Capital Regional District’s political desire to look good to the non-smoking public is the updating of the Clean Air Bylaw. It’s another stupid bylaw on the books for political gain. I look around to see where most of the air pollutants are coming from and it is not cigarettes. It is from automobiles, trucks, cruise ships and freighters floating by in the Juan de Fuca Strait – not from more than 12 per cent who have the right to smoke. As smokers we have already agreed to the following: ■ Smoke three metres or more away from public doorways and open windows and air intakes; ■ Not smoke indoors in public areas; ■ Not smoke in cars where children under 16 are present; ■ Agree to contracts with private and public landlords not to smoke in our suites; ■ We agreed to pay a substantial tax on each pack of cigarettes or 50 cents a cigarette to pay for our future health issues. As a non-combustion vehicle owner it is clear I need to buy an automobile so I can smoke in my car (like so many people already do) and pollute the air for all residents with my tailpipe

Realtors have duty to their client Re: Many benefits to using a realtor (HomeFinder, July 18) I would always recommend a realtor to sell or buy a home because, yes, a good real estate agent is trained, experienced, has access to information and, particularly, to the agents of the Multiple Listing Service – selling homes is a numbers game. However, that being said, five years ago, as a realtor’s dream (a purchaser without a home to sell) we bought a two bedroom plus den condo. It was a hot market at the time. We liked the condo so we offered list price. During the time we bought and moved in, there was, unluckily, a dramatic drop in home prices, outside the control of the real estate agent and for which no responsibility is attributed. What is attributed is that buyers do not necessarily notice the things they should, the small things, perhaps being overwhelmed by the wider picture, in terms of location, room layout,

as overriding positives to buying. It is the realtor’s job to provide comparative sale prices at the time of the offer and this was not done. It is the realtor’s job, if the prospective purchaser has not seen the smaller stuff, to point out things such as the age of appliances, faucets, counter tops, toilets, baths carpets were original. We understand the principle “buyer beware” and we ought to have been more careful. However, with the realtor’s eye, we would have offered at least $20,000 less. I would not use that real estate agent again. The realtor’s interest was in the best commission and not in the best interest of the client Sure, buyer beware is the rule, but the realtor, as an expert has a responsibility of duty to the client. Shelbourne St.
Osteoporosis is a bone disease where parts of the bone become weak and prone to fracture. There are two main types of osteoporosis; primary and secondary. Primary osteoporosis occurs most commonly in women after menopause. Osteoporosis affects twice as many females over the age of 70 as males in the same age group. Secondary osteoporosis can affect young and middle-aged people as well. It may be caused by medications or chronic illnesses.

Welcome to the driver’s seat
“What many people might not realize is the basis of the Durango was developed by Mercedes-Benz for its GL-Class vehicle and Dodge in turn took that same platform and made it into the Durango.”

Trucking in style through the big wide open There’s nothing like a the big doors and the easy-to-access back seat, summer road trip in British and were surprised at Columbia, where we are how huge the cargo area spoiled with some of the is when the third row of most scenic beauty the seats is folded flat. My world has to offer. youngest Charlie helped My last adventure was me load and unload from Vancouver to Kelowna to visit some friends City fuel economy and he noticed the low power lift gate switch and hang by the lake, get that shorter people can a bit of tubing time behind can be frightening our gracious host’s boat but I was surprised at access easily. and take full advantage of how good this truck Inside some B.C. wine. time you get four is, even when taking Any The wonderful thing people in a car for over about my job is that I get advantage of the new four hours the high and to hand pick the vehicle 120 km/h speed limit low points of the interior for heading out on the design bubble to the on the Coquihalla highway, and I always surface. My wife instantlike something roomy and highway. ly loved the two-tone powerful with cars – with Zack Spencer black and beige leather German often on the seats that are heated top of my list. Instead of and, more importantly, an Audi A7 diesel, this time around I cooled for hot summer days. She also selected the full-size, truck-based Duappreciated the big 8.4-inch uConnect rango SUV from Dodge and surprisingly screen that is only offered on this top it does have some German roots. Citadel trim; the lower trimmed cars get a 5-inch unit. The boys in the back Looks noticed that the seats recline for more My family and I are no strangers to the comfort and legroom is massive. On the latest Durango; we had the very same way out of Vancouver, Charlie instantly grey Citadel version over the Christmas fell asleep and didn’t wake up until break last year. Same thing, I wanted Chilliwack for a Tim Horton’s break, so something big to move people around the seats must be comfy. Jack on the over the holidays. That stretch was other hand spent the better part of mostly city driving – this time it was the trip playing on his iPhone but the wide-open road. What many people Citadel is equipped with flip-up screens might not realize is the basis of the for gaming consoles and DVD movies. Durango was developed by Mercedes-Benz for its GL-Class vehicle and Drive Dodge in turn took that same platform My seat was a good spot to take stock and made it into the Durango. My two of a few things, primarily fuel economy. boys, Jack,12, and Charlie, nine, love This is a big rig and was equipped with
‘‘

the 5.7L Hemi V8 with 360hp, moving all that power to four wheels through an 8-speed automatic. City fuel economy can be frightening but I was surprised at how good this truck is, even when taking advantage of the new 120 km/h speed limit on the Coquihalla highway. The Durango put in a solid 11.8 L/100km, with more than 900 km driven. Keep in mind I didn’t soft foot my way to or from Kelowna. I did notice that the fuel economy improved vastly the closer I stayed to 100 km/h. The handling is a bit top-heavy in the corners, especially at higher speeds, but after some initial body roll, the Durango is very stable. One notable feature is the automatic fantastic adaptive cruise control, making the ride very enjoyable. Verdict If you drive in the city, the base 3.6L V6 engine might be a better choice based on fuel consumption but, if you drive a lot on the highway or tow a boat (3,265 kg towing capacity), the
Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference. Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8. My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. I can’t wait to see how that new truck compares. The Lowdown Power: 3.6L V6 with 290hp or 5.7L V8 with 360hp Fill-up: 15.6L/9.1L/100km (city/highway V8) Sticker price: $39,995-$52,495

ROYAL OAK 801 Royal Oak Drive 250.727.6561 has incredible off-road capabilities, in case I needed to get to some hard to reach spots. With a ground clearance of 220mm – like the Forester and XV Crosstrek – it can tackle the trails without even breaking a sweat. Thanks to the X-Mode feature, it allows for even more traction in high-slip environments. This all-wheel drive vehicle is just as happy being on the road as it is playing in the puddles, mud or climbing rocks. Another adventure that wasn’t as physically demanding took me to Ferryland, south of St. John’s.
After parking, it’s about a one-kilometre walk until you reach a lighthouse. Not just any lighthouse, but one that serves picnic lunches. A trip to Newfoundland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Cape Spear; Canada’s easternmost point. Looking out into the Atlantic, another iceberg lazily floats by as the humpback whales are out and breathing. A cool ocean breeze blows the salty air around. I could get used to this, along with the companionship of the 2015 Subaru Outback.

Complete with a hightorque Lineartronic CVT, I had the option to up and downshift through the Outback’s simulated gears, in case I needed to pass cars en route to my various adventures. First: sea kayaking in Cape Broyle. Though the drive from downtown St. John’s is only about 66 km, I’ve learned that giving yourself a little extra time when going anywhere is a good idea. It’s amazing how serene the cabin remains even at highway speeds, with the wind blowing furiously. Furthermore, the Outback

St. John’s, Newfoundland: Atop Signal Hill is an arrow that points westward. It reads “Vancouver, 5,031 km/3,126 mi.” I’m a long way from home. But as I look over the rock wall of the historical landmark in St. John’s, , I don’t feel so far away. As I walk towards the allnew 2015 Subaru Outback, I realize that this vehicle is also making its own little history. Touted as the world’s first sport utility wagon, it’s now 20 years old and better than ever. There’s an all-new exterior look, the interior is much more refined, there’s a vibrant gauge cluster, a new audio system, and around back, there’s a total of 1,005L of cargo capacity (that’s up 33L from the 2014 model.) There’s also a choice of two engines, a humble 2.5L, 4-cylinder with 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, or a more potent 3.6L, 6-cylinder with 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. The latter of the two engines is what powered me around The Rock.

Drives-UCrazy ... Left turns If an advance left turn arrow changes to solid green, it’s okay to pull out into the intersection and wait for a clearing to go. So many people treat these intersections as though the green is a red for left turners! What drives-u-crazy?
The Kia GT4 Stinger concept has received a prestigious design award from the Industrial Designers Society of America. The car, first introduced at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is an authentic rear-drive 2+2 sports car. Beneath the hood resides a tuned version of Kia’s race-proven 2.0-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injected (T-GDI) four-cylinder engine, which puts out an impressive 315 horsepower. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Homeless need help to stay cool, says advocate As the temperature continues to rise, Victoria’s homeless population needs help to cool down. A lack of access to air conditioning, clean water, or even good shade means the homeless are especially vulnerable to heat stroke and severe
heat,” said Al Tysick, head of the Dandelion Society, a grassroots street ministry. “As it gets hotter, you see the danger that extreme sun can have on people. Sunburns, heatstroke and dehydration are all serious concerns for the homeless popula-
dehydration, both of which can be fatal if untreated. Prolonged sun exposure also increases the likelihood of developing serious sunburns and even skin cancer in the long term. “This week, I’ve seen many people illequipped to fight the
tion as they have no where to go while the temperatures go up.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder W. Gifford-Jones, MD
W
hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack. Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack. Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.
I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent. But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies. The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day. This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors. As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.
Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries. Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal. I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications.

Rangers edge Highlanders in ‘friendly’ Travis Paterson News staff
The Glasgow Rangers drew 5,735 fans to UVic’s Centennial Stadium on Monday evening as the storied Scottish club narrowly defeated the Victoria Highlanders 2-1. Prior to the start of the match four skydivers landed at centre field with one delivering the game ball. It added theatrics as the parachuters were forced to avoid grumpy ospreys, concerned for the young in their nests, high up in the stadium lights. Bagpipes then greeted the fans and players before the historic friendly kicked off. The game featured all the scoring in the first half. Cam Hundal, who scored the game-winnning goal in the 2011 CIS National Championship for the UVic Vikes at Centennial Stadium, was big again, and scored the Highlanders only goal on his home turf against the Rangers. Hundal, a left-side attacker, received a simple pass and shrugged off a challenge from Ranger Darren McGregor before tucking the ball inside the near post. Calum Gallagher and Nicky Clark scored for the visiting Rangers. The Rangers website reported 10 changes in the starting roster from the team’s friendly in Sacramento last week. The Rangers played in Ottawa on Wednesday. The Highlanders season comes to and end, having been ousted by the Vancouver Whitecaps U23 side, 7-2 in the July 16 playoff match at Royal Athletic Park. The women’s Co-op Highlanders secured the Pacific Coast Soccer League regular season trophy, and an undefeated 10-0 record, with an 8-0 victory over the Mid Isle Highlanders on July 20 at Hampton Park. Liz Hansen led with a hat trick of goals. Olivia Swinton, Emily Stenerson, and Mia Gunter each scored their first goals of the season and Kristen Livingstone also scored. Mid Isle was tabbed with an own goal. The women move on to the PCSL Challenge Cup Tournament this weekend in Penticton. Extra timE … The 2011 CIS National Championship final at Centennial Stadium drew just 3,023 fans, just over half of Monday’s attendance. editor@vicnews.com

Review critical of project leadership Continued from Page A1
The review was also critical of the lack of leadership in the project. The role of project director, who would have authority to manage the project and report to council via the city manager, was left empty. “During the review process I couldn’t find anybody to take ownership,” Huggett said. “I would ask ‘who’s in charge, who’s responsible for making that

decision?’ and they would just look at each other. Nobody was owning up.” To correct this problem, Huggett has since been appointed as interim project director until this September, while a suitable permanent candidate is found. The city also fired senior project manager Ken Jarvela last week, who Isitt said was unable to impose much-needed “managerial discipline.” “(Council’s) expectation going
into the project was good project management,” Fortin said. “Issues have been brought to us, so we’ve changed the leadership and we’ll continue implementing (Huggett’s) recommendations.” reporter@vicnews.com

New buildings offer fresh start Newly constructed homes offer advantages Drew McLachlan News staff
After 34 years in Whitehorse, Yukon, Eamonn Campbell decided it was time for a change. Campbell and his wife Karol bought an apartment in the Promontory building on Saghalie Road in Vic West, which opened on June 25. At first, they weren’t sure how they would handle the transition from their Yukon acreage to an apartment in the city, but after spending a week and a half in their new home, Campbell was convinced they had made the right choice. “The move-in process so far has been fantastic,” says Campbell. “There’s an excitement in the air with everybody now moving in. Everybody’s been really friendly – I haven’t walked into an elevator yet without getting into a conversation.” Like many buyers, Campbell specifically wanted to move into a new building,

in older homes. “A lot of people just like the thought that nobody’s owned it before, that they’re the first ones to really live in that

space,” says Promontory sales manager Kelley Olinger. Olinger says that another attraction for many buyers are the modern design
aspects, built around the necessities of living in the 21st century. This includes infrastructure like more advanced soundproofing, “smart wiring” (allowing for a single panel to control internet modems and sound systems), underground parking and amenities within the building. Aesthetically, newer buildings often use space more functionally – hallways and corridors are done away with in favour of a more open design. Campbell made special mention of the high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, which help to light up his new apartment. “The location’s been key as well, with all of the amenities close by,” he says. “I wanted to be able to walk to the pub, walk to hockey games – moving here from Whitehorse, I didn’t want to be stuck in the bush again.” While older homes can carry a quaint charm, Campbell says that the Promontory is not without its own, as living in such close proximity to neighbours has created a unique community aspect, one which he is eager to become more involved in when he moves to Victoria full-time next year. reporter@vicnews.com

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.
“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

the 5.7L Hemi V8 with 360hp, moving all that power to four wheels through an 8-speed automatic.
The Lowdown Power: 3.6L V6 with 290hp or 5.7L V8 with 360hp Fill-up: 15.6L/9.1L/100km (city/highway V8) Sticker price: $39,995-$52,495

good time. If it’s your first time out pick a spot that’s not too far, maybe about an hour away. Check the internet for the best locations and book your spot to avoid disappointment when you get there. Most sites have attractive locations such as a lake, ocean, or a river close by that you can plan hikes together. This will provide family activities for the day. A good tent will make the trip that more enjoyable. If you don’t own one then here a few things to know about them, A-frame tents are usually smaller and can sleep two or three. They have a screened door and a small-screened window to keep mosquitos out. Remember to close the door after entering or exiting or you will be sleeping with them. Most A-framed tents come with a fly, which is waterproof material to cover the outside of the tent. If you’re camping on the coast bring a heavy duty tarp to help with the site and you will be ok. rain. you set up your stove in a level area to avoid any mishaps. If it’s your first time then bring foods that are simple to prepare. A typical propane stove has two burners and a propane tank attached to the side. These are easy to clean and just as easy to pack away. Remember to bring lots of garbage bags so you can either take it home with you or use proper facilities at your campsite. Be sure to put your food away in your car preferably so as not to attract unwanted animals. Clean the area before you go to give the next person the same experience you enjoyed on your camping adventure. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

high-slip environments. This all-wheel drive vehicle is just as happy being on the road as it is playing in the puddles, mud or climbing rocks. Another adventure that wasn’t as physically demanding took me to Ferryland. Established in 1621, this community south of St. John’s rests quaintly on the coast. While many clusters of homes do too, this one is particularly magical. After parking, it’s about a one-kilometre walk until you reach a lighthouse. Not just any lighthouse, but one that serves picnic lunches so you and your loved ones can enjoy a meal while sitting on blankets, partaking of a sandwich prepared on freshly-baked bread, sipping homemade lemonade and breathing in the natural beauty of the open ocean. Onto a higher paced adventure - sort of - was a stop in Brigus. One particular bridge was on my mind. The one that competitors in the Targa Newfoundland race fly over. The sign says 10 km/h. That’s not the case when drivers are blasting through the tiny waterfront community. But I wanted to be a part of the fun, even if I was at a complete standstill on the crossing. A trip to Newfoundland wouldn’t be complete without at trip to Cape Spear; Canada’s easternmost point. Looking out into the Atlantic, another iceberg lazily floats by as the humpback whales are out and breathing. A cool ocean breeze blows the salty air around. I could get used to this, along with the companionship of the 2015 Subaru Outback. The 2015 Subaru Outback has a starting MSRP of $27,995.
