Gull Lake Golf Course Pro Am gives back to young golfers By Treena Mielke
Eamon McCann from Gull Lake Golf Course proudly holds a sign noting that $50,000 has been raised for junior golfers at the golf course through the Junior Golfer Endowment Foundation. This year, approximately $8,000 was brought in through the live and silent auctions at the pro am tournament held July 18 and 19, bringing dollars raised to nearly $60,000. Treena Mielke Photo

The atmosphere for the ninth annual pro am golf tourney at the Gull Lake Golf Course was one of excitement and anticipation. Youngsters, hungry to improve their skills, and thrilled to be up close and personal with the pros of the game, enjoyed the opportunity to mix and mingle with some of the big names in golf as they joined them on the links. The pros chatted and joked with each other, enjoying the time to hang out together in a relaxed setting and, in the process, help some youngsters learn a little more about the game. The adult/child nine hole scramble was held Fri., July 18 at the golf course and on Sat., July 19, a nine-hole Texas scramble followed by nine holes of individual play was held. As in the past, this year’s pro am raised cash for junior golfers through the Junior Golfer Endowment Foundation to go towards their post-secondary education. This year, around $8,000 was raised through the live and silent auctions, boosting the amount of dollars raised in nine years to nearly sixty thousand. Eamon McCann, who owns Gull Lake Golf Course with his wife Carla, has worked tirelessly behind the scenes for years to bring the tourney to fruition. This year was no different. The night of the adult/child nine hole scramble McCann was bubbling with excitement, as he oversaw the activity, managing somehow to be here, there and everywhere, and always, most importantly, ending up where he was needed most. “As owner of the Gull Lake Golf Course, I am very proud of how this foundation has given back to our junior golfers and helped with their secondary education,” he said. “It is wonderful.” Continued on page 6

New RCMP officer comes on board at Rimbey detachment By Treena Mielke Const. Carman Dutz, recently transferred to Rimbey from Nunavut is happy to be back in central Alberta.
Originally from Red Deer, Dutz said he is pleased to be back in the area with his wife, Twyla and their 14-year-old daughter, Taliya. “What I like about Rimbey is the variety of police work. I love being involved in the schools and
the team here is really good. I prefer smaller detachments and Rimbey is great. I’m looking forward to making new friends and creating new experiences.” Although Dutz is pleased to be back in central Alberta and close to his family, he said the four years he spent in Nunavut was a great experience and one that he very much enjoyed. Always up for a challenge, he said neither he nor his family knew what to expect when they accepted the post, but they decided to face the unknown with a positive attitude and make the best of their new situation. During his four years in Nunavut he worked at the communities of Taloyoak and Kugaaruk. The post at
Taloyoak was especially busy, and Dutz was called out often and without much of a break. “It seemed I would just put my head down on the pillow and I would be called out again,” he recalled with a wry smile. While the experience was challenging, he looks at the time in the far north as a learning curve and an opportunity to gain first hand training in police matters which would be dealt with at another level in less isolated posts. Const. Dutz and his family are living at Wilsons Beach at Gull Lake and he is happy with both their dream house they found and the location. “I prefer rural areas and open spaces.”
Const. Carman Dutz is the newest member of the Rimbey RCMP detachment. Cst. Dutz joined this detachment June 23, transferring from Nunavut. Treena Mielke Photo
A Big Thank You! to Mark Koenig
My husband and I, live right next door to the Agrim Rodeo Grounds and our property line is right on the empty lot next to the Co-op Home Centre. We were watching the helpers getting the grounds ready for the Rodeo, everything was getting spruced up. A young man by the name of Mark Koenig did an EXCEPTIONAL job on that empty lot! Everyday he was picking up rocks, branches, debris, weed-wacking and cutting the huge lawn as it had never been done. He was very considerate on the weed-wacking near the fence, so as not to harm any of my flower plants. Mark takes a lot of pride in whatever he does, we think, as we don’t know him personally, because that empty lot looks wonderful! Thank you Mark. Bill & Ann Griffin

Four weddings in summer cause for lots of celebrating My husband and I have attended four weddings this summer, a clear indication that the institution of marriage is alive and well, despite dire predictions that may lead one to believe otherwise. The weddings were as varied and interesting as the brides and grooms themselves. The first wedding took place at this huge campground, which conveniently included a hall where a few chairs had been placed in rows of anticipation. The chairs were soon filled with family and friends, us among them. There was lots of Treena Mielke hugging and kissing On The Other Side and raising of wine glasses and people being all happy like they are at weddings. The bride wore three quarter length white pants and a pretty white top, but the most amazing and notable thing about her attire was her happiness. It surrounded her like a really cool halo! The second wedding we attended was in Leoville, Saskatchewan; population; 300 or so. Leoville’s claim to fame is it actually has two First Streets, and our friend’s mom lives at the end of the other one. “Come to mom’s house,” our friend texted us when we arrived. “Where does mom live?” I texted back. “At the end of First Street,” the text said. Weeks later we are still chuckling over her directions and how we became the first people in the entire world to be lost in Leoville. The wedding in Leoville was also filled with family and friends and the star of the evening was the bride’s mom, a beautiful eighty something lady, who managed to be light on
her feet, gracious and a beautiful dancer all at once. The bride herself was lovely in a simple short black and white dress, and once again, her most outstanding adornment was her happiness which she wore cloaked in a veil of tears and laughter. Our third wedding took place near Cochrane, but not as near to Cochrane as we thought. Consequently, we were late, creeping shamefacedly into a back pew just as they were signing the register. “We almost missed the wedding,” I told my daughter later. “Really,” she said, feigning surprise. This wedding, or at least what we saw of it, took place in a very old, historical church, somehow very fitting for such a ceremony. The bride wore blue which matched her eyes and the skies and her smile was as sunny as the day itself. A good omen, no doubt. We arrived at the last wedding an hour early, surprising everyone, mostly ourselves. It was an outdoor wedding. For what seemed like forever, we sat all alone in these chairs in the bride’s parents’ yard feeling kind
of weird and out of place and decidedly early. It was really hot, stuck out there in the middle of the yard, seated in two folding chairs, looking all conspicuous, like maybe we were wedding crashers, or something undesirable like that. It was at this time we came to the unspoken agreement being early was almost as bad as being late, but in a weird, uncomfortable sort of way. But, eventually, other guests arrived and the green grass was dotted with ladies in pretty dresses, fluttering about like birds of summer, and men, handsome and somewhat uncomfortable in their dress up clothes, hovering near by. It turned out to be a wonderful summer wedding, filled with family, friends and love. The bride and groom looked like they could have come down off the top of a wedding cake; so young, so perfect and so in love were they. It was good. Four weddings in a summer! Something to be grateful for, for sure!

Wildrose launches licence plate design competition for Alberta artists
Production: Red Deer, Alberta Published every Tuesday by PNG Prairie Newspaper Group in community with: Publisher: Fred Gorman
EDMONTON, AB: The Wildrose Official Opposition is asking Alberta graphic artists and designers to submit their designs for Alberta’s new licence plate and will host an online voting competition to determine the top design. The Wildrose Caucus Foundation will make a $2,500 donation to the winning designer’s charity of choice. The winning designer will also receive a $500 cash prize, courtesy Wildrose MLAs. Submissions will be collected until noon on Aug.3, after which time finalists will be chosen and posted for Albertans to vote on. Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said the competition is intended to showcase the im-
mense talent in Alberta’s graphic design community and give Albertans a greater say in what will be become an important symbol of Alberta’s identity. The PCs chose Minnesota-based 3M to provide design options for Alberta’s new plates. “The PC government missed a golden opportunity to engage with Albertans and give them a direct say in choosing how to express our collective identity,” Smith said. “We are inviting Alberta’s art and design community to give us their creative best on what they think the plates should look like. I have no doubt the submissions we receive will be top notch and will hopefully force the government to change
its approach.” The Wildrose Caucus Foundation was formed in March of 2013 after PC MLAs approved an 8% increase in MLA pay, despite objections from Wildrose MLAs. In response, Wildrose MLAs unanimously agreed to set up a charitable fund to donate their increase in pay. Since its formation, the Wildrose Caucus Foundation has made several contributions to Alberta charities and causes including the Be Brave Ranch, Camp fYrefly and the Red Cross relief efforts following the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines.

The department has purchased five high-intensity safety scene lighting for its newly acquired multipurpose response vehicle. Fire Chief, John Weisgerber said the lights are a definite bonus. “When you improve scene lighting, you improve scene safety,” he said, noting that whether it be day or night, visibility is often compromised by smoke. “The new state-of-the art lighting equipment will improve firefighting safety and effectiveness when it’s needed most.” Bill Stephens, president, ATCO gas said the company is pleased to help out the fire department. “This new lighting equipment is one way we can help Rimbey first responders protect their own lives as well as the lives and property of those they serve.” ATCO Gas delivers natural gas distribution service to more than one million customers in nearly 300 Alberta communities and is part of the ATCO Group of Companies. ATCO Group has more than 9,800 employees.

Rainey returns to Rimbey as minister of Nazarene Church By Treena Mielke When Grant Rainey was a youngster in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s in Rimbey his father, Percy Rainey was the minister at the Nazarene Church. Now, Rainey has gone full circle and is back in the community pasturing at the same church where his father preached so many years ago. For Rainey, who worked in human resources at Briercrest College and Seminary, a Christian college in Caronport, Sask. for many years and also within his own company in Kelowna, B.C. it is like coming home. “I have been all over Canada and this (Rimbey) felt like roots.” Rainey said being a pastor was his original calling and although he
did not plan to become a full-time minister when he retired, the change of plans has worked out well. “I feel very comfortable,” he said. He and his wife Marietta, who have a blended family of six grown children, recently moved to Rimbey from Didsbury. “I was driving up from Didsbury three days a week and it is wonderful to be here and a relief not to be doing all that commuting.” Rainey is looking forward to meeting the people of Rimbey and becoming more involved in the community. He enjoys collector car restoration and has almost completed the restoration on his 1966 Chrysler.

Cindy Bowie took over as director of community services July 14, replacing Peter Stenstrom, who has moved to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia as director of the bible camp in that community. Bowie, who lives southeast of Camrose on a family farm is settling into her new position and looking forward to meeting everyone in the community. A graduate of the University of Alberta where she studied recreation administration, Bowie
worked as director of community services for the towns of Ponoka and Barrhead previously. “I always heard good things about Rimbey and the facilities here,” she said. She said she is pleased to see the pool is functioning well this year and the splash park is operational. Bowie, who has been commuting is looking forward to moving to
Rimbey soon and bringing her faithful companion, Akida, a Japanese Bear Dog with her. “He is always with me,’ she said. “He goes where I go even though he is beginning to lose his hair and his good looks. The amiable new director said she plans to spend most weekends in the summer helping her brother with their family farm.

Sylvan Lake, AB Jordan Sinclair understood us and our needs. I find buying a vehicle an overwhelming task. Jordan heard what our family was looking for and when a vehicle came in that he felt would suit our needs, he contacted us. We came down and checked the vehicle out and it was exactly what we were looking for. He was quick, courteous and very professional. I recommend Jordan as a salesperson as he really has the client in mind.

By Treena Mielke The only change happening at the Canalta Hotel in Rimbey, (the former Super 8) is the sign. General manager Konnie Meissner said the hotel is owned and operated by the same people. “Everything is exactly the same,” she said. Meissner said the hotel has always been a Canalta Hotel, but operated as a Super 8. Recently Canalta has begun using its own brand. “Ponoka and Rocky were changed just before this one,” she said. Canalta Hotels has 38 hotels across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The family owned business began with just one hotel in 1976.
Rimbey skateboarders will have to wait until next spring to enjoy the sport, but they can look forward to skating in a state-of-the art park. Kinsmen project chairman Allen Adam said the park is to be built on the south side of the Lions Park. He said about 100 people showed up at a workshop held June 30 to talk about a new park. “We will be ready to dig as of May 1 of next year,” he added. “It is to be a permanent structure; all cement.” The Kinsmen Club has utilized the services of New Line Skateparks Inc. to build the new park. The town will supply the land, but the Kinsmen will secure funding for the project through a grant. New Line Skateparks Inc. is a full service design and construction firm specializing in the development of integrated concrete skateparks and other progressive skateable environments. The company is comprised of landscape architects, engineering experts, planning specialists and construction professionals who are passionate active skateboarders. New Line Skateparks are now in the process of designing preliminary drawings. Another meeting will be held once the process is complete so company representatives can garner public input as

Speed: The new 1/8 mile track at Central Alberta Race track attracted a good crowd at the Drag Shoot Out held July 12 and 13. There was lots of speed and rubber burning at the track during the event. One driver was taken to hospital by emergency crews with undetermined injuries to his hand after his car hit the water filled barricades and then rolled. APN Photo
